Favourite brunch spot in the North. Super sweet setting with lovely staff and food and drinks to match. The baba ganoush breaky is to die for! Great menu with plenty of range! Vegan/ vege friendly
The turmeric latte is smooth and has a wake up gingerly peppery hit to it. The place has a great feel and I wish I was hungrier as the menu looks great. Lots of lovely veggie options
Food and coffee were pretty good - got the smashed avo on toast and my sister got the granola. Staff were very friendly but the service was fairly slow. Cool area out the back to relax in.
As a student living local I constantly return to this cafe
They deliver food that goes beyond standard cafe menu’s and at an amazing price
I have always had lovely customer service here
Thank you Kau and co team x
The baked eggs was super delicious and the backyard area has a great vibe with heaps of beautiful plants. Staff were also friendly, looking forward to going again
Friendly staff, great coffee, great music and incredible food. I love this place! Nice to see healthier options in a cafe setting and very interesting menu.
Stopped by to have a Latte with dad. Lovely staff, good chilled out space at the back, coffee was nice. Didn't try anything to eat but will be back next time. Thanks and all the best guys:)
I have been to Kau three times only, but each visit has never disappointed me. The staff is always smiley and accommodating, the coffee is good and the food is great. I will definitely keep going back.
A very cute cafe both at the front and in the rear garden area. Breezy with plenty of hipster wood and chunky beats. Staff are casual and relaxed which I like. Coffee is good but I prefer a stronger bean to what is served. I ordered that avocado on toast for $15. Had potential but for this sort of money it was way too small. Virtually entree sized. Way too much Tabasco made all the beautiful fresh (and subtle) components become drowned in heat. Serve the heat on the side please. For $15 it should have had two eggs or drop the price to $11-12. The garden is lovely out the back but someone spent nearly 10 minutes emptying their noisy trash. Not the owners fault but it certainly detracted from my zen :)
Didn't look like much from the outside but has potential ....
It's one of those layback setup Cafe, just a bench, a few things on it easy going girl Barista wearing a Coca Cola t-shirt, but I wan surprised with that they are offering.
Will check out their Menu further.
Good food, easy service, great coffee. Awesome hideaway garden out the back and the staff are always lovely. Love coming here on a lazy afternoon to read and sip my coffee in the quiet, or to catch up with a friend and let time drift away.
Always amazing food came in todAy and the kitchen was about to close and they were so generous to stay open for us I was really appreciative for that. Thankyou :)
Good cafe.... Went here for brekkie.
I got the BMT and it was okay, it wasn't a very generous serving and wasn't full after. The menu wasn't that much of a variety and is not a very suitable place for people that don't like eggs (like me) but would give it another shot for lunch maybe.
Favourite baked eggs!. Fantastic brunch spot. Coffee is spot on and the baked eggs are flavourful and very filling! The olive tapenade with the napoli baked eggs has just the right amount of saltiness - delicious!
Love picking up a coffee from here on my way to work - great start to the day
Nifty joint. In a cafe dense area Kau does stand out and for good reason. We sat outside in the sun on a hot Melbourne morning and were greeted by super friendly and hospitable staff. They offered us water which doesn't always happen. Small thing but a must do for all cafes I think. The coffee was perfect and the friendly vibe makes Kau a great spot to relax and enjoy a lazy weekend breaky.
Gem of Thornbury. Had heard about this place from some close friends who love it so thought we'd give it a go. Verdict- we'll be back for sure. Staff were friendly and relaxed, both meals and coffee were delish. My baked eggs were spot on. Great to see the majority of condiments are house made also. Looking forward to our next visit!
Love this place.. Hadn't been here for a while but returned this morning b/c was I was in the area. What a pleasant return! Coffee was spot on and baked eggs - which aren't done well at many places - were the BEST I'VE EVER HAD!
I think I'll have to schedule more work meetings in the area!
Yummy food and cute little courtyard. They're good at what they do but the menu is super limited and never changes. Have got a bit bored of this place of late, but overall a good place to try for breaky :)
Yum food. Kau has a lovely menu and great coffee. The food is seriously delish and so simple they prepare it all behind the counter, no need for a full kitchen! They have a pretty courtyard where you can soak up the sun over food, it's lovely. The only problem is the service is not Melbourne at all, it is more like service in some bogan town in country Victoria or Byron Bay. I know Melbourne cafes and restaurants are all about the food, not the service, and I am totally with them on that one, but there is seriously a line when it comes to Kau. I am appauled by customer service in bogan country towns and I seriously get flashbacks of it when I go to Kau. Being in hospitality is about being hospitable after all and it seems the owner has prehaps a background in food but not in the Melbourne hospitality industry.
Red lentil roti is amazing. Lots of veggie options.
Fantastic coffee and great breakfast. The staff were efficient and friendly- our coffees were brought straight away. Reasonable prices too.
What a great find! Was walking through Thornbury and this was the first place we stumbled across. Lovely little courtyard and.flexibility with the menu to cater for a non-animal diet. I had the field mushrooms with avocado instead of cheese which had a good portion of vegies. My friend had the BLT which she thought was fab too. Will certainly be back!
Love this place. Great coffee & nice cafe food. Friendly staff. Can't go wrong here...
Sold. I loved this place.
We had the fruit toast with ricotta and rhubarb (fab mix) - this was a few weeks ago and I am still thinking about how yummy this was. My roti with scrambled eggs and salmon was quite nice too.
Cute place, nice menu, delicious fruit toast and they were playing The Beatles. I am sold.
First time visit today and not disappointed. Good coffee, great food (avocado & feta on sourdough, baked eggs and breakfast pie) and a nice courtyard out the back. We'll definitely be back.
Tempting Rolls and Quirky Drinks. After going to this place twice id say the highlight here is the flavorsome range of rolls in addition to their array of organic drinks. They do an ok job of anything eggs based but to be honest there is a lot better in the area. The girls that work there are nice enough if you make an effort with them to be friendly(should be the other way around). They seemed a little over worked. The coffee is ok, i found mine to be a little burnt but i was liking the fact that it was a strong cup of coffee. The design of the place itself is nothing spectacular either.Despite their being nothing terribly wrong with Kau, with so much competition that deliver better food and coffee i would try elsewhere.

Consistently delicious. Been here multiple times and I am never disappointed. Just yum, Napoli baked eggs are always a winner!!! The entire menu is so yum working my way through it. Definitely one of my favourites!
Delightful. Yummy breakfast, nice staff.
BRILLIANT coffee, peaceful courtyard ambience, perfect suburban cafe, marred only by some bogan shouting from the Greek pub next door.
By far the best cafe on the whole of high st !
My second home. Ok, i dont know where to start, i am a massive fan and cant go elsewhere these days...every time i make a promise to myself to explore new horizons, i get disappointed.
The excitement of this menu. Best coffee. Always. Food - i think i will list the full menu if i don't hold back, where else can you get such amazing variety of creative tasty fresh food for this low price?? Whether you are a meat eater or veggie, they create dishes that make you feel they have been created for you!
Yummm, cant wait for the next morning feed.
Super tasty, nice outdoor area. Breaky favourite.
Kau great Kai. These ladies get the flavours right and the portions right and the coffee right! The service can be a bit hipster aloof, especially on weekends and out the back, but nothing to sweat about
Kau - Epic. Fantastic food, fantastic coffee/tea and just lovely and relaxed for a Sunday morning brunch.
Highly recommend it
Lovely. Very nice food, good service and lovely courtyard with shade. Superb coffee, cute potted cacti.
Wow, wow, wow!!! This place.... Wow, wow, wow!!!
This place is banging, amazing food, coffee was slightly to hot for black but excellent flavour. Tunes were cool and food was excellent!!! Will be back for sure!!!
I'm not sure that I experienced the same Kau that all the other reviews are written about. Service was fine, although nothing special. Food was okay, but nothing you couldn't do at home. Coffee and chai were mediocre. Okay, but I probably won't go out of my way to return.
Northern Food Review
+4.5
Quite good. I do like it. Though the wrong coffee order taken. But over all I did enjoy it.
Kau. Excellent coffee consistently. Food good and relatively cheap.
I love this place! The food is so tasty and fresh and not your run of the mill breakfast but something special. I love the baked eggs with zucchini and there is always something on the specials board to tempt me. AND Tea drinkers rejoice: you are really looked after here; if you ask for a strong pot then that's what you get
Kau is down home goodness. The simplicity of avacado and fetta on sourdough really hits the spot. The specials board brings new offerings each week - the fritters at the mo are great. A take-away Turkish triangle eases the morning traffic washed down with atomic coffee which will get you jumping in your boots. Definitely recommended.
Sat out the back under a big tree, had the mushroom and leek pie with goats cheese, was delish
Wow nice staff good coffee and great price! Will be back
Baked eggs are good, so is the coffee!
Super cafe. Love Kau: it is cute and small. The staff are super friendly and helpful. For lunch today I had a delicious tuna roll with a great chai. I can't wait to go there again.
I'd recommend the delicious home made hummus on sourdough toast with rocket, dukkah, olive oil and a wegde of lemon to squeeze over the top. I added some roasted cherry tomatoes which topped it off- YUM! To drink- a nice, strong Chai latte- love the 2 cup serving size and honey on the side! A very pleasant discovery in an up and coming Thornbury!
Great food, friendly staff and superb hot chocolate... A welcome addition to the neighborhood!
From the front it looks like a tiny little cafe but the big courtyard outside makes for a comfortable space. I really enjoyed my curried vegetable pie with potato and rosemary, and the salad was nicely dressed and uncomplicated. Lovely cafe!
A delightful surprise on my escape from home office today :)
Loved the fresh and open ambience. A very pleasant place to get some work done! Oh, and they let you use their power points!
Strong Soy Latte with two sugars impeccable!
The mushroom brekkie pie and the side chilli jam was a beautiful match! So flavorful and tasty!
And for a healthy closing, the Golden Smoothie with banana, tumeric, ginger, honey and coconuts flakes on top! <3 <3
Staff was stellar and I could tell that everything there was made with love and care... :D
Great coffee, chai tea. Limited menu though. Not many pastries/sweets left when we arrived. But thank God for them - one of the few cafes with good coffee still open at 5pm. Live music available at courtyard, supporting original music. Decent service.
Gorgeous little courtyard.
Stumbled on this little local cafe and have been back a few times now.
The coffee is mmmmm spot on, and the guys running this place make you feel totally at home.
Check out the cute courtyard as well.
Did I mention the coffee is Great!!!
A lovely lunch in the rear shaded garden area with friends. Could book and the service was friendly and food just right. They even had vegan fetta and gluten free bread. Highly recommended! A great discovery.
Five star service by Troy & five star coffee by Sharni! Attentive service & yummy food, the pulled beef roll & Japanese omelette are fantastic, so are the pies. We love the new menu & friendly atmosphere. Recommended!
Great coffee. Scrambled tofu was perfect served with kimchi and some flat bread. Great serving size. Friendly staff. Will definitely go there for breakfast again.
