Review Lambs Restaurant - Northcote

Great souvalaki full of flavour and quality meat. Love the pita bread and the lemon juice squeezed over it before it's wrapped.

We didn't even know that this place was nearby until the amazing smell of the lamb hit our nose. We got so excited and googled where it was. As soon as we walked in I kinda felt like I wasn't even welcomed. No greetings at all, I couldn't even compliment the amazing smell. We asked if we could sit outside and when our wraps were ready the old man started hitting the window to call us back in which was a bit agressive imo. The lamb was cut in big chunks which had big fat pieces in the wrap and it kinda ruined the taste which made me feel like I was eating fat wrap. Also it was over cooked which made the meat dry. I do appreciate these guys using lamb and not manufactured meat but It all comes to how you present your food. The bread wasn't even wrapped it was like taco and hard to eat. I couldn't enjoy my food. But maybe they were short staffed and I hope they will improve on these things.

Good for take out only, dine in experience has been the worst I’ve ever had, no customer service, orders hopelessly slow, not the old Lambs I used to know. So sad, so heartbreaking 💔 #bringbackoldlambs

Best Greek food in Northcote. Don’t waste your time with others down the road. Quality souvlaki and very tasty. Also good portions. Other places cheap out on the meat. These guys don’t. Dine in or take away, it’s both awesome. Service is great by all and special mention to Klalib who has been working there for years is also a top guy who always provides awesome service.

Not the same ... taste is okay, just overcooked and dry. Can't be using #Masterfoods sauces ... OMG

I love this place, best original SOUVLAKI in town and also the most flavorsome chips you will ever eat , they also sell retsina in a small bottle, or a thirst clenching VB, enjoy a relaxed dine in experience. Yia sou. They have dropped the ball a bit with my last 2 visits so have to downgrade them to a 4.

LOVE the mixed Traditional Souvlaki ( Lamb & Chicken) . taste really yum and juicy w the sauces 😚

Went in to order a lamb souvlaki. The lady next to me asked for no tzatziki, and had returned her souvlaki. The staff member used tongs from the raw lettuce to pick through the ladies souvlaki to check if she was telling the truth. Wouldn’t expect that before the pandemic and definitely wouldn’t expect it during. After ordering I had asked if there was a possibility of oregano and feta on the chips, as this is sometimes available at other Greek shops. “No, just chips”. Ok no problem. I was happy to pay whatever for that. I asked if that would be around 10min, and received a response “I don’t know 5-10min?” Anyway, received the lamb souvlaki and chips, the taste was bland and had very little flavour. Seems the staff have a ‘can’t be bothered’ attitude and it comes through with the food. Won’t be returning.

Very bas customer service , we went in as the rules of 4 person in the restaurant but the guy working there at this time was very rude to say (people don't listen ) I would recommend to train the stuff for a good customer service

Very tasty late night souvlaki. Sometimes have stuffed pepper and sausages too.
The place itself is incredibly outdated and hasn’t had a lick of paint since it opened, chalkboard menu, artificial grapes decor etc. but the actual souvlaki is delicious. Dolmades out of a can, great pickled octopus
EDITED DUE TO MANAGEMENT REPLY. Went and checked out the new layout. Much better. Still poorly lit but has a much better vibe. Better looking menu. Received my souvlaki in record time and was delicious. 3 to a 4 :)

Yes/no? Yes

If you are here for a late night kebab feed, this place is good.
Lambs looks like a very rushed, old kebab place but the kebabs itself are delicious. The meat was tender and the chips are crispy.
Fast service for takeaway. Ordered a mixed gyros and some chips. The chicken was tasty, lamb was ok, a bit fatty but it was rendered and had a good charcoal flavour. Chips were doused in chicken salt and disappeared quickly.

Best souva I’ve had for a while. Lamb is cooked on charcoal and tastes great. Tarama is fantastic. Other dips are really good too. Very affordable prices and the staff are friendly too. Definitely going back. My new favourite souvlaki place.

First was a but tasked aback by the cold, unwelcoming staff... only you be surprised by the fact that they don't take card. Had to get cash out and was ignored for several minutes when attempting to pay. Was hoping the whole experience would be redeemed by some good food. Not at all. Chewy, fatty lamb and barely any sauce on the souvlaki.

It'll be a moment of severe desperation before I walk through those doors again.
Carla
I love the lamb and the dolmades are great as well. The meat is just too good to pass up if you’re craving a kebab and the staff are quite friendly.

Complete waste of money. Not sure how this place is still even open ?

But wow. The food was terrible !!! Dry and tasteless. Me and my partner left starving. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

If your in the area and looking for a good souv or some Greek food head down to station st !!!

Great food, attentive service and very family friendly! Pricing reasonable and good value for money. Family owned business at its best. Great job guys! Will definitely be back 😉

Terrible service. Below average food. I asked for chicken and got pork (I cannot eat pork) the staff were really uninterested and seemed annoyed at my girlfriends dietrey needs. Would not return.

I was once served uncooked lamb in my souvlaki here. I suppose I should have realised sooner, when my charcoal fired pieces of lamb tasted most rubbery, and upon inspection, rather pink. Need I say any more?
Peter Evans
Nothing bad just run of the mill . This place has the same low grade pieces of lamb cooking over charcoal ( which is a plus ) smothered in salt. They use standard supermarket style bases with iceberg, tomato and onion and garlic sauce. Whilst it's a filler after a late night it's fairly average.
Wouldn't it be fabulous if someone actually put some effort into making really good soovas.
Caffiend
A kebab franchise found all over Melbourne for consistently juicy and tasty kebabs. The Northcote outlet has an awesome kitsch restaurant attached and was featured in the last season of Please Like Me (great show!).

Very decent souvlakis.

Food- 4.5
Coffee- n/a
Service - 4.5
Atmosphere- 3
Cost - $

Always a great go to for authentic souvlaki, large serving size and relatively quick service
I was the biggest fan of Lambs but the meat has gone down hill fast, the meat is more fat than lamb and the prices have only gone up.

I always found going there in the morning for lunch was the best bet, the rude worker hasn't started yet and you normally get a decent souva.. from late arvo they are mighty tight on topping and meat. Watch out for the younger bloke there, we call him crazy eyes and he always is whiny and rolling his eyes..

Saganaki was my number 1 item but they are a rip off these days and food quality has dropped..

Our first take at greek food here in Melbourne. Good Food and good prices. Couldn't fault it. The lamb cooked on charcoal is so nice. You can smell it from the street. Definitely going back.
Nick
I fell in love with these kebabs the first time round. Meat is cooked on a spit which was different and deffinetly tasty for me. 2nd and 3rd time back got worse and worse..everyone working there seems to be pissed off all the time...plenty more kebabs out there..wont be back

What's not to like? grilled meat, souvlaki, dips and marinated things. A pleasant very casual dining experience but I have to say one of the best chicken I have had in years.
Meat is tender and treated respectfully making for mouth watering enjoyment. Fresh warm bread with some dip is never to be dismissed as they are very enjoyable.
If you can't find anywhere to eat because you didn't make a booking or running late to see your band at the Northcote social club, then here is the place to come.
G Train
Nothing special, but that's not why you eat at Lambs. Above average food, meat is cooked on charcoal which makes it super tasty, but the service is average. Takeaway dips are awesome, much better than the packet stuff from the super market.

Souvlaki's are always consistent at Lambs. Go to place after the Northcote Social or the Peacock. Things usually move quick in here so you won't have to wait long after ordering and the price is pretty cheap for what you're getting.
Jamesdudehill
Best Souvlaki in Melbourne.. Haven't found a better souvlaki in Melbourne. 10/10 would eat again. Don't believe the haters.
FireupMills
I wish the taste matched the smell; rude service...fatty; just thrown together; i wouldnt go back
LK
Lambs is definitely a great place to go for a quality kebab, or some cheap and quick Greek food. I can highly recommend it as a place to take your carnivore man-friend for a feed! It probably won't blow your mind, and if you are looking for a special Greek meal out I would look no further than somewhere like Hellenic Republic rather than here... but for a cheap and easy feed... look no further than Lambs!
Durham.evans
Lambs....Bleurggggghh. The take away food is hastily prepared, slopped together and leaves a foul taste in your mouth.
Good for when you've stumbled out of the Northcote Social on a bender, but guaranteed you'll be buying mouth rinse the next day after this mouthful of offal.

!!!. Amazing! mouthwatering souvlaki, the best I've had (my dad agrees and he is hard to please). fast service and extremely reasonably priced!
An
This place used to be SO good. But now the quality of the meat has just gone down hill (and fast). The chips are still AMAZING. But a kebab full of pieces of fat, I’ll pass.

Warm food and atmosphere. I really enjoyed eating here the souvlaki was extremely tasty and I had a baklava it was sooo good! Will definitely eat there again!!! It makes you feel very full aswell which is what I loved.
Ryan
Eat here once a fortnight with friends, always get the mixed meat platter, salad, chips sausage etc... Never disappointed, meat is always tender and tasty.
SuperSilvy
Ordered a chicken souvlaki and it was full of chicken skin! Don't waste your time or money.

This is my guilty hangover pleasure. Please don't tell my friends I eat in at this place.

Still fatty after all those years. When I was relatively new to Australia in 2006, I got a lamb souva from the Lamb's on Chapel. I was aware of their reputation as one of Melbourne's old-line Greek sanger joints, and I wanted to see what Lamb's was all about. What I remembered most about that Lamb's was the gobbets of fat in the souvlaki. I've eaten lots of souvlakis, gyros (as they're called in America) and donairs (the Canadian word for that sanger.) NONE of them had as much inedible fat as Lamb's souvas did.

I found myself hungry and afoot in Northcote the other night and spotted this Lamb's. Against my head's better judgment, my stomach decided to give the biz another squizz. The grilling meat smelled so good! And it was still so fatty! Different location, seven years later after I ate my first Lamb's souva, yet I still spat out four chunks of gristle that I couldn't chew. And I have teeth like a Top End croc's. The most I had to spit in Canada was two, and souva spots in other English-speaking nations rarely gag me with me more than one. Lamb's recipe is rusted on, eh?

I still give this joint a thumb's-up, because the meat was tasty and there was plenty on my $11 souva. Nice char on some edges, decent oregano and garlic flavours throughout. I got off cheap, too, at $14.50 for the souva, a can of Coke and a baklava triangle. I think the counter bloke (who gave decent service, not as bad as other reviewers have whinged) forgot to charge me for something sugary. Sweeeeet.

Worst Customer Service DON'T BOTHER. Four of us went in last night for a souvlaki. We wanted to eat in but thouhght perhaps the restaurant was closed as it was EMPTY!

The younger guy out of the two was upset we sat at a table as he said it was reserved (there was NO ONE there).

We then decided perhaps we would take away. The guy was SOOOOO RUDE rolling his eyes around at us an really really really ANGRY! We got our food went home and ate. The souvlakis were ok but the overall experience was awful.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!
Jules333
This place used to be ok but bought a souvlaki yesterday and had to throw half of it away because the meat was so fatty. More fat than meat. I'll go across the road next time
Robbyz
Not bad. Meat wasn't grisly like other reviews, though I did buy my kebab at 11am for my hangover cure. It was good, but I have no craving to go back, like say Friends Kebabs.
Melbourne
Unrecommended!. Highly unrecommoned souvaliki, Terrible terrible customer service , poor food! fatty, oily, to salty, meet was burn, unable to chew felt like i had a piece of rock and more importantly hurt my stomach.

how can they get it so wrong.
Carl York
Substandard. Folks
I went to Lambs a few weeks ago and I have to admit that aside from the substandaard lamb souvlaki I received, the customer service from Peter, the owner, was utterly appauling. Not only did he get my order wrong 3 times and provide me with a sloppy souvlaki, but he was also drinking on the job and making unnaceptable comments to his staff. I will never go to Lambs again and would suggest people think twice about going there.
Thurnis
Got a souvlaki and chips last night. the chips were delicious. but the souvlaki was near impossible to eat. it was so sloppy. not only that but the meat was full of fat and gristle. the kebab shop down the road is 30 times better

Avoided this place in the 10 years I lived nearby, but was craving a felafel wrap and made the mistake of visiting. Hint: a wrap is supposed to go right round the filling, not be so stingily short that it falls apart once you tear back the paper. Tasted of stale lamb fat. Yuck.
LG
Sorry- terrible. In a city full of decent souvlaki, this is a real lowlight. Expensive and chewy unappealing lamb. At $10 a hit this should have been at the bare minimum adequate....
Mmm Whats For Dinner
Happy I ignored the negative comments. Food is great home style quality greek food at cheap prices. Been grabbing Souvlakia (not kebab - kebabs do not come from greece!!!) from there for a few years and they are always spot on!. Thought tonight we would sit in a give the Mousaka a crack (had a craving). It was actually really tasty and up there with my Yiayia's. We also had a horiatiki salad, some pita breads and little platter of lamb giros. The food was well seasoned as Greek food is. Couldn't really fault any of it. We nearly didn't sit in to try from the menu after reading some of the comments. Quite happy we chose to ignored them.

So salty.. Lamb's food is so salty that it gives me massive headaches. :(
Matt
3 words oily, fatty, uneatable stay away
Rothy
Give the gristle a mistle. English: give it a miss because thy gristly meat.
Peter
Value for money. I know where these guys buy their lamb from. I guarantee you they only use lamb, not mutton like most other kebab shops. The shop looks dated but the quality and price of food makes up for it. I'm a regular customer....
John Carver
A kebab from lambs is so tasty and messy. Maybe a bit like life. You have such a mix of love, desire, excitement and a tinge of guilt. Great spot.
J-Man
Gives greeks a bad name. Rotten place to eat. Rotten service, arrogant rude short tempered waiter who is over worked, the toilets have a shared wash room that is held together with corking cement, its disgusting. The Entree was fried cheese, took over 40 minutes, main was mixed kebab platter, arrived 20 mins after the entree. The meat was ordinary, like what you get when you stop at a roadside kebab shop. For a great name and location these guys running it are a complete joke and an absolute insult to Real Authentic Greek cuisine, piss poor effort and food... Oh and did I mention its cash only...
Ally Smith
Quite possibly the worst food in Northcote. The last kebab I got from this place was binned a couple of bites into it, it was all just gristle and oily grossness. The customer service is not only shoddy, but bordering on offensive.
Mandy
Terrible food no flavor!!! Rudest customer service in northcote!!!!! Never go here!! Do yourself the favor ......
Tiggy
Great food, staff could be nicer. I often go here to grab a kebab on my way home and to eat in with friends. not a fantastic atmosphere to eat in and the blank staff don't help much either, overall though, great kebab!
Barry
Everything a souvlaki should be, when you have a bunch of older Greek men working the grill, doing what their forefathers taught them, then you no it's going to be good
Xjuzjuzjuzx
Epitome of souvlaki. The Lambs brand certainly know how to make souvlaki. If i'm hankering for a souva and i'm in Northote, there's no exception other than Lambs
