These guys are great for dine-in but they also let us bring our own containers for takeaway bc we really want to cut single use plastic out of our lives. I also like the 2 wine sizes by the glass and how aware they are about allergens and ingredients.
Lovely food and good service. The atmosphere and wine list are a huge improvement on the other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. A great place to sit and enjoy.
Really yummy Vietnamese food! Had the prawn and pork rice paper roll for entree, and the lemongrass beef with Chinese broccoli and rice for main. All was delicious, but the lemongrass beef was the stand out for me.
Keep coming back here because of the delicious food and great service!
Standout Vietnamese food and good value. The salt and pepper squid and Banh Xeo pancake were excellent!
We ordered takeaway and we like the food very much. We ordered the combination pho, combination crispy noodles and the chicken skewers. The food is fresh, not greasy nor overly salted. It tastes like the chef really cares about the food they put out. So glad to have found a good Vietnamese restaurant in our neighbourhood. Will definitely order from here again. Keep up the good work.
A lovely spot on High Street for Vietnamese. Modern set-up compared to the other Vietnamese restaurants in Northcote. Food on offer is pretty standard but selective, bun bo is not bad. The durian gelato was the highlight.
What a gem find this place was.... very clean pleasant decor. Excellent, friendly fast service but BEST of all, the food was fresh, flavourism, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious not to mention very reasonably priced.... only downside car park is a nightmare but obviously no reflection or fault of restaurant owners!! I'll be back soon to indulge in another Vietnamese meal treat at my new found favorite destination!
Excellent service and very delicious food!! The casual dining experience with high quality meals. We ordered the barramundi with soy and ginger which was cooked fresh and was delicious as well as the chicken slaw salad. Will be back for sure.
My Vietnamese wife and I have been here twice now and each time have been blown away by the amazing food. The ingredients are fresh and the flavours are well balanced and authentic. Having a meal here is just as good as having a homecooked meal prepared by my inlaws or wife's relatives. We will definitely be coming back.
I have been to many vietnamese restaurants around Melbourne and especially in Northcote, but Ginger & Chives definitely stands out. I liked the funky interior decor, friendly staff, efficient service, and spotless clean cutlery. Most of all, I found the ingredients they used to be very fresh and the dishes had a home cooked feel. I was also provided with a variety of vietnamese condiments which I loved. Highly recommended.
Came in for dinner with mum last night. Suffice to say we were blown away. Amazing attentive service, slick trendy fit-out and most importantly, delicious, authentic food. Not your typical High St affair by any means, Ginger and Chives offers a wide range of fresh, unique, specialist dishes from various regions of Vietnam (certain dishes that I'd personally never seen outside the country before). I was especially surprised to see mum, usually a very harsh critic of Vietnamese food (being a brilliant Vietnamese cook herself), loving the entire experience. We tried (and recommend) the Banh Khot (savoury pancakes served with a plethora of fresh veggies), Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup) - a very hearty and complex broth, Bo La Lot (beef skewers wrapped in betel leaf), Mi Xao Don (crispy seafood noodles), and even Durian Gelato! (not overpowering by any means).
If you're after genuinely authentic Vietnamese food, looking to try something new and delicious, in a relaxed unpretentious environment, then Ginger and Chives is the place for you. After 15+ years of living in Northcote, we have a new champion of Vietnamese cuisine!
Best Vietnamese in northcote and surrounds by a long shot! High quality and fresh food - prices are great. Not to mention the staff is so nice. Highly highly recommend!
Just Another Melbournian
+4
Cute, clean and modern Vietnamese restaurant on High Street. Wanted to try this place as I noticed they had ‘Bánh Khot’ (mini prawn pancakes) on their menu...this dish is usually hard to find in most of your standard Vietnamese restaurants. The Bánh Khot was pretty much what I was there for and it was lovely. The accompanying salad/herbs served with it were what I was expecting and spot on. The dishes seemed well priced and service was friendly and polite. Would go back with friends for a casual dinner and to try the other items on the menu!
Wish we had tried this place earlier. Best Vietnamese in high street. Some of the dishes tasted just like they do in Vietnam!
Service was a little slow at times but overall very good!
Omigod, ive lived in Northcote for about 4 yrs now tried all the places and none have had what I remember growing up in Sydney as a half caste eating mums french/Viet food, the serious fatty pork with eggs? Water spinach in garlic not prawn sauce yuck, that's what I've been searching for all these years, I'm stoked. If only you would do the tendon, brisket, tripe and beef ball pho I reckon I'd open an account for dinner everyday, oh and maybe the pig trotters lol A+ real Viet food!
Really easy, reasonably priced, good service, suits all demographics, food is staple delightful Vietnamese favorites , have returned and will again
I've been meaning to post for ages! We've done the large group table, table for two and I've gone solo in all cases had a great time and loved the food. Warning: don't order one serve of quail at a table with 10 people unless you want to see your friends fighting like seagulls. Banh Khot are divine and not available often enough in Melbourne outside Victoria Street. The Barramundi was bone-sucking good and if you enjoy an alcoholic beverage with your meal, you'll be well looked after.
Great place, fantastic staff and yummy food! Reasonable pricing and generous servings. Enjoyed my boyfriends birthday here, the staff were lovely and made our night even more special by surprising the birthday boy with deep fried ice cream accompanied by candles and a round of ‘happy birthday’. Will definitely be back.
So delicious!!!! I had the stew which was incredible and all the servings were extremely generous so expect to bring home leftovers! Just as good as restaurants like chin chin etc.
3rd generation 'Vic St' restaurateurs astutely blended with 21st Century front of house smarts. Lucky locals. The Pho, the Bun with Sugarcane Prawn, any dish really, is fresh and fantastic delivered with a refreshingly friendly and professional approach. It's hot!! The DIY Cuon is a great sharing platter for hot days. Love it.
Salt and pepper eggplant!! What more could you want in your life, it is my favourite dish ever. Do yourself a favour and order main size. Thank me later.
These guys always go out of their way to make the dining experience a+! Delicious food, great setting and friendly staff. Could not recommend ginger and chives enough.
Just love this joint... my relatively-new favorite Northcote Vietnamese with a home-style twist. The menu is a contrast to the usual extensive Viet offerings. Love the Banh Khot (mini savory pancakes). Wok Fried Salt & Pepper Squid is supreme, but my fave is the Kho To caramelised pork belly with eggs; the broth is other-worldly. David and his sis provide super service in a relaxed and spacious atmosphere. Fully licensed, unlike most Viets, but prices reasonable.
I tried this place for the first time on a lazy Saturday afternoon and it’s definitely going to be my new favourite Vietnamese place in Northcote.
Environment/atmosphere
The restaurant looks very nice inside, it’s exposed brick and dark floor boards give it a very cosy feel, it’s well lit and has lots of natural light coming into it during the day and I like how the tables in it are more spaced out to give people the feeling of more room, unlike most Vietnamese places which can usually be very tightly packed.
Food
I had the Banh Hoi Chao Tom and my partner had the Mi Wonton, I had never tried this type of meal before even at other Vietnamese places and it was very nice with plenty of salad leaves. My partners wonton soup was yummy also and it was soo good I actually ended up finishing his meal because he couldn’t eat it all.
Service
The service was lovely, I can tell they are really trying to create a good business, our waiter even asked me if I knew how to eat my meal when it arrived and offered to give me some tips as it can be a bit confusing if your not used to the Vietnamese eating culture. I will definitely go back and try something else next time.
Loved everything about this restaurant all the way down to the staff. Such a generous menu that really delivered with flavour and was both visually and tastefully appealing
Vietnamese done without the horrible fluro lights and toilet rolls for napkins. Sure you pay a little more but it's worth it. I had the rice paper rolls - the prawn ones are better than the duck. I followed it up with pork belly. Pretty tasty although not a revelation in flavours. I was going to try some dessert but was full in the end and that's with sharing! Decor is nice although the tables are pretty much cookie cutter standard and laid out accordingly. I recommend that management put a blind on the back window as the views are not worthy. I also hope they get rid of the plastic straws. All in all recommended and the service was very pleasant.
Looking for something for a LIGHT, HEALTHY, CHEAP weeknight dinner? This is your place. AMAZING food !!! The salt and pepper calamari is to die for, a MUST! There’s also the egg plant version for the vegos. Highly recommend this place, the DIY Cuon comes with so much herbs and a fantastic Nuoc Cham. The ambience is casual and clean, not the typical Vietnamese restaurant but with authentic food.
Dined in at this new restaurant on High St on Friday evening.
The decor is fairly modern and has a slightly hip vibe about it.
The service was friendly and the food quite tasty. This restaurant is fully licensed and there is no byo so a bit different to the other Vietnamese restaurants in the area from that perspective.
So fresh and delicious! This place is on another level, home-cooked classics, not too pricey and impeccable service! 5 stars 10/10 Definitely my new regular👌🏻
Food was great and very authentic! DIY Cuon couldn’t be faulted. It was a great tasting plate if you want to try a little bit of everything. Also had the best Bun Bo Hue I’ve had in a while.
I've been here twice and brought the family the second time. Place is clean and modern, staff are super friendly and the food is great. Mum rates the nuoc cham (which she says is the true test of how good a Vietnamese place is) and I love that they have a wide range of dishes that you don't see in a typical Vietnamese restaurant. Will be back again soon!
Been back twice in the space of a few weeks, it's just THAT good!
The menu is a fresh take on authentic Vietnamese dishes - just as good as my mums!
Service is absolutely top notch!
Great service and great range of dishes. We had the bo kho and banh xeo and was pretty satisfied with what we got . The bo kho was slightly on the sweet side but was still pretty good. Am definitely looking forward to going back to try the other meals .
We were trying to decide between this new Vietnamese restaurant and the pho place across the road. Now I love the pho place across the road, but my gosh I’ll never look for Vietnamese anywhere else!
Ginger and chives are fantastic! All ingredients are cooked in house, and they have the most magnificent special home made sauce to go with your dish. Highly recommend dinning here! The staff are friendly, the price is cheap and the overall experience was great!
Will definitely be back! 😁
Food, service and location? Tick, tick, and tick. This restaurant is a newbie in the hood, but they're already throwing serious foodie punches. Try the beef fillet with rice 👌 Already planning a return visit...
Came here on Wednesday night for the first time after seeing this cool, funky, small restaurant whilst going on my morning walk. The first impression was wow what a clean, fresh, cool place.
Their menu was not over the top it was simple but yet enough to make it interesting. We ordered few starters with the salt and pepper eggplant truly amazing. We enjoyed it so much that one of us ordered it again as a main and I must say we were impressed at the quantity the main gave us.... Both guys there were lovely especially Mickey who took the time to have a bit of a chat and a laugh and he also convinced us to try a different red wine [ didn't need too much convincing ] lol !!!!! the place was quite busy for a weeknight... Food was fresh, tasty, and good servings. We all enjoyed our meal and would definitely recommend this new vietnamese restaurant with a modern twist.. Thanks, Mickey will be back soon
connie and friends
My friend and I had lunch at Ginger & Chives today and we both really enjoyed it. The waiter was lovely and the food was delicious. I especially loved the Banh Cuon! The wine list is also pretty good which is always a plus in my books ;) I'll definitely be back.
Not your typical Vietnamese restaurant!! Modern with a menu serving your traditional and speciality dishes (And they have tap beer!).
This is the second time I’ve dined at GNC, food and level of service I could not fault. I’d like to call out to the young gentleman who was very attentive and friendly with our children. You made us feel very welcomed and comfortable dining with kids :)
We ordered dishes to share:
Banh Khot(yummmm), Wok Fried Salt & Pepper squid (ridiculously good), Canh Chua (my daughter loved the sweet & sour fish soup 😍) Ca Hap Gung (steamed barramundi was so fresh #delicious), Bo Luc Lac (so tender and juicy) & Rau Muong (not pictured, was too busy eating I forgot to take a pic). If you eat Durian, you must try the Durian Gelato 🍨 ... (I felt like I was cheating on my bf)🤤
Thank you for bringing great food to High st, we’ll be back to try the rest of the menu!
Enjoyed a tasty and authentic meal here last night. Friendly and attentive service with some standout dishes. We really enjoyed the skewer platter that was brimming with fresh, fragrant herbs and home made dipping sauces to complement a variety of skewers. The salt and pepper dishes are a highlight here. Perfect balance of seasoning with the lightest coating of flour then deep fried a lovely golden colour and topped off with chilli and shallots. The tentacles, eggplant and pork ribs were all delicious. The beef salad was light, fresh and a nice palate cleanser to end the meal. For those seeking comfort food, the chicken pho is a huge bowl of steaming goodness in a rich, well seasoned broth accompanied by home made pickle, chilli and bean shoots. Unfortunately we didn’t have room for dessert on this visit but the durian gelato would be a nice way to end the meal. Come hungry and you will not be disappointed. Looking forward to a return visit.
This restaurant serves beautiful Vietnamese food with many interesting twists. The prawn pancakes and the beef skewers were delicious. Very passionate restaurant team too! We had a great night here and will be definitely revisiting.
Have been twice now and this place rocks. Great authentic Vietnamese with some great dishes that are hard to find in Melbourne, plus all the usuals. The Banh Khot, Bun Bo Hue, Com Tam & Banh Xeo are my favourites. Run by brothers and sister combo who's parents and grandparents have long been established in the Vietnamese restaurant business' in Richmond. Is our new local in Northcote!
Great food and relaxing atmosphere. Would recommend the salt and pepper squid tentacles and the duck rice paper rolls. Very fresh and tasty. Will be back, very happy with our lunch and service.
Amazing authentic Vietnamese food. Loved every bit of it! There were dishes that are not commonly found in Vietnamese restaurants in Melbourne and usually in Vietnam or a Vietnamese family home. Will definitely be back!
It's always a good change to have new decor viet restaurant without the need to stretch the budget. Ingredients are fresh and the food is not oily. You could tell the food is made with minimum msg when you're not rushing to drink a whole jug of water.
Must try:
Salt and Pepper eggplant or squid. They were a treat. Could be their signature dish.
Rare beef salad. Salad was fresh and the fish sauce dressing complimented the dish really well. The prawn crackers is provided with the salad which is the only way to really enjoy the dish.
Here's a tip, save your complimentary prawn crackers and order the salad. You won't be dissapointed.
i'll be coming back for some more squid, beef salad, saigon beer and will try other dishes on the menu.
I barely write reviews but this calls for a review.
This new kid on the block blew me away. Rarely find good asian fusion amd service in the northside. So its a definite hit list!!
We shall be back!!!
Delicious Vietnamese food. As a notoriously picky eater I was able to find food on the menu I would eat. Food was delicious. Venue looks great. Plant wall is a really nice touch. Great staff. Will definitely be back!
Only a few years ago I don't think there were any Vietnamese restaurants in Northcote, and now we're spoiled for choice. This place is a bit more modern and fancier than the others, which is a good idea I'd say (better than just replicating what we already have).
The food was really well presented and cooked, and was delicious. The service was really friendly, and they've very happy to chat and answer any questions you have about dishes you're not familiar with. Recommended!
Just happened to stumble across this new restaurant on High Street. It has open for less than a week and is being run by a Vietnamese family who has been in the restaurant business since the 90s. They definitely know what they are doing.
My friend and I ordered the Banh Khot, Wok fried salt and pepper squid, Hu Tieu Mi (dry) and the Bo Kho.
Coming from a Vietnamese background, I found all of the dishes to be authentic and very similar to the way my parents and grandparents would cook it.
Value: 5/5
Service: 4/5
Food: 5/5
Speed: 4/5
Would definitely recommend this restaurant to my family and friends. Good work guys!
Vietnamese food is exceptional, price is affordable. Enjoyed their vietnamese coffee and desserts! Love how the guy serves and tells my kid how she should have her Mi Ga Don menu its an egg noodle accompanied with crispy chicken. The place is neat and tidy! Pineapple banana fritter with ice cream so delectable!
Exceptional service, incredibly fresh food, diverse and affordable menu.
I Would highly recommend Ginger & Chives for any occasion.
Top notch food and service, staff are so friendly and accomodating! Came in for Mothers’ Day lunch and received complimentary drink and side. Meat was all so tender and flavourful, veggies super fresh. You can absolutely tell that everything is made fresh in-house. Will come again and explore more of the delicious menu.
Really pleasantly surprised at the flavours! Got the bo khor and banh xeo. Tender and plentiful chunks of stewed beef. Reminded me of Derrick's mum's stew.
Banh xeo - done just right, plenty of filing with pork and prawns, plenty of salad on an the side to wrap it all in. Crispy batter where it matters.
Prices are very reasonable, especially for the area.
Will be taking my parents here.
Delish food, great vibes, awesome staff up for a chat. Can’t recommend more 🙌
I have been to many vietnamese restaurants around Melbourne and especially in Northcote, but Ginger & Chives definitely stands out. I liked the funky interior decor, friendly staff, efficient service, and spotless clean cutlery. Most of all, I found the ingredients they used to be very fresh and the dishes had a home cooked feel. I was also provided with a variety of vietnamese condiments which I loved. Highly recommended.
Brilliant authentic Vietnamese restaurant. The food was delicious and the restaurant itself is has a much better vibe than the other Viet restaurant in the area.
Highly recommended to try their killer Bo Kho and Bun Bo Hue.
My new favourite spot on high street!!!
Couldn’t have been more impressed with the food and service I received last night at Ginger and chives. Wow!
Hands down the best up scale Vietnamese I have ever had! We pretty much got all the to share plates. Favourites would be quail, wontons, Hanoi rice paper rolls.
So yum!
Also the were a little understaffed probably due to covid but the waiter did an amazing job to make sure everyone felt well serviced. And did it all with a smile :) Couldn’t sing his praises high enough!
I went out for drinks and told everyone I saw how good it was
