As a Northcote local, love this place and we kept coming back consistently. The flake taste like real flake, potato cakes are fantastic, and batter not too oily. Minus one star because one time we received 4 dim sims instead of 4 potato cakes, had to go back and by the time they made us potato cakes the food has gone cold. On top of that, they took the dim sims away! So my advice is, always ask for the receipt so you can double check if they got your order right before they start making it. Apart from this isolated incident, glad we have a reliable fish and chips shop in the neighbourhood!

A humming little business on the day we arrived. Their biggest selling point for our Palace Movie group is that they do gluten free fish and chip options with a seperate oil vat for cooking the gluten free items. The chips are delicious with adequate salting. I couldn't tell the difference between the taste of gf chips vs the non-gf as there wasn't a beer batter coating so assume it's the oil vat segregation that makes the gf. The batter on the gf fish was a little less appealing than the normal batter but equally as tasty. We ate in the limited table space provided using plastic cutlery but clearly most were people were taking away. Handy for a quick bite to eat when rushing from work to get to a French film festival screening.
My partner and I had some fish and chips before seeing a movie down the street. A nice classic fish and chip store that serves your standard fish and chips.

I have been a weekly customer of Westgarth Fish and Chips for the last 3 months now. Coming from a big Italian of 7, pleasing all eaters is never an easy task. As a resident of Northcote I was traveling to Hunky Dory to purchase our weekly dinner as in the last 25 years of living here I had never found a better F&C shop in the area, searching from Preston to Clifton Hill to Collingwood even Carlton.
After driving past many times, I thought it was time to give this place a shot. Now 3 months on, I won't go anywhere else.
The chips have never once had a fault, always hot, golden, crunchy, full of potato and still crunchy the next day!
Their fish whether it's fried or grilled, is not only a great portion but consistently fresh and never soggy.
Hamburgers and Souvlaki's are great, moist, fresh ingredients and a huge size.

When I shop at nearby terra Madre and am wanting take away, I always come here and buy some chips. They are super crunchy without being soggy, the staff are friendly enough and although the prices are a bit more than standard I don't mind paying it as they are so delish I dig in before I actually get home! :) my coeliac friend loves that there is gluten free options too.

The grilled fish is delicious, with the perfect amount of breadcrumbs, and their chips are good too. Looking at some of the other reviews I find it hard to believe we're talking about the same place. I live round the corner and I've never had a bad meal there. The staff are friendly enough, and it's fish and chips not cordon bleu - dinner for two for less than 20 bucks
Maybe they have changed hands recently? Used to be less than average but now the food is considerably better. Fresh oil, fresh chips, fresh fish. Can't complain. Yum!
Quality fish and chips for all the family. The gluten free offering here is part of the attraction, it means that we can now have a family meal of fish and chips. Both the traditional and GF are good quality.
This is a good place. The fish and chips are traditional and tasty. I've always found the staff to be pleasant too.
Souvlaki. The souvlaki (chicken or lamb, or even both) is great value for money and tastes great!
Very good. Good chips, good fish, both grilled and fried. Calimari rings could be better. Good potato cakes. One of the only F&C stores in the area open late on a saturday night. 'Large' chips could be more generous. Yum! One of the best in the area.
