Review Uncle Albert's Cafe - Norwood

cherootie
Well made simple food that does not mask individual items with sauces. Really nice setting. Relaxed orderly processes by staff that give off a sense of being secure in their job. The owners are nice without being overly familiar. Mostly caters to a senior demographic but the outside area is arguably the nicest outdoor place within 100m to grab a bite, either side of the Parade. Mellow coffee, good soda drinks. Good fries. About $15 for a meal, $5 for coffee, a cold drink..I paid $30 for a good chicken burger, an organic sparkling juice, a large-ish coffee and fries. Parking is tight brunch & lunchtimes.

Fast efficient service, great tasting coffee, plenty of room for I door or outdoor dining. Lots to choose from on the menu and caters for all coffee types and milks.

I recommended Uncle Albert's for brunch with my friend. Our coffees were nice and the staff were lovely. She ordered some chocolate waffles, they were average, they came with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and strawberries. I ordered a smoked salmon stack. On the menu, it consisted of avocado, smoked salmon, eggs Benedict and a cheese spread on bread. When the meal arrived, I was served the ingredients on toast, that could pass for coles white bread. The avocado wasn't fresh, it tasted like store-bought avocado dip. The eggs Benedict was overcooked and therefore hard on the inside, it was pretty much a boiled egg. The smoked salmon was cheap in quality, the fish wasn't soft it was a little tough on the edges and didn't taste fresh. My meal definitely wasn't worth $20 and I could only stomach a third of it. I left highly disappointed as I had been to this brunch place before and their quality of food has significantly degraded.

Nice little cafe off Norwood parade in the mall leading to the shops. Quite a large and varied menu that includes an all day breakfast as well as a lunch menu. Cakes and wine also available. Prices seem reasonable and staff was friendly, service was prompt.

Excellent customer service, so accommodating. We all really enjoyed the tasty food đź‘Ś

I went here two weeks ago with my mum for a quick brunch, nice looking place tucked away. I ordered avocado salmon with poached eggs and before going to eat, I noticed the avocado didn’t look like fresh avocado and but store bought avocado you get in packets. Everything else on plate didn’t look up to par, although egg was cooked perfectly but salmon looked cheap make, the white bread felt stale. I asked what avocado was mixed with Because it tasted bitter. One of the waitresses, they went to ask kitchen and “we were told mixed with lemon and olive oil and that avocados weren’t in season. “ I was disappointed and sent back the meal. The girl who served us was very lovely about whole thing and I ended up having croissant which was very yummy. They threw in another free coffee and cup of tea which was nice of them but bit disappointing whole experience.

Got a bargain. Bacon and egg sandwich with large coffee $10. Best deal in Norwood.

Always a good bite for a cheap and cheerie brunch

Had the misfortune to order a breakfast at Uncle Albert's Cafe this morning.
Counter staff very friendly and I didn't have long to wait but .....
The rye toast was burnt with a smearing of what looked like margarine. three generous slices of bacon - two undercooked and one burnt. Scrambled eggs that tasted of wartime reconstituted egg powder; a slimy hash brown that tasted of oil and not potato. Lastly one very sad and lonely burnt half tomato. I ate three mouthfuls and gave the plate back in disgust. To be fair the young man behind the counter did apologise but the cook in the kitchen was quite combatative when I asked about the freshness of the oil. All in all a waste of $16.

Uncle Alberts has prime position in the heart of Norwood mall. The menu has a good selection of food to choose from at quite reasonable prices. Staff are nice and the food is pretty tasty even though it is quite simple. I prefer to sit outdoors and watch people going by and I tend to order an item off the menu. Milkshakes are great. A nice place for a quick bite to break up your shopping on the Parade.

Fresh and tasty every time, great portion sizes. Service with a smile, great ambience, value for money, great tasting coffee by cafe aurora (which is part of Vitoria coffee).... defiantly be back again!!!

Not quite sure what the awful reviews have been about. Guy at the counter was friendly and helpful. Coffee was excellent, food can out quickly (and it's lunchtime). My omelette was pretty good, if a little buttery and serving was generous. The atmosphere was nice under the trees, but there does need to be a bit of clean up outside with a little bird poo. Not bad at all.

Today we were traveling and pulled in to the Norwood shopping centre. The first eating place we found was Uncle Albert's, After looking at the menu, and what was available we decided on a sausage roll each as a quick snack. This was a mistake, because it was the worst sausage roll I have ever eaten. I cannot believe how any restaurant proprietor could serve this sort of junk. Needless to say I will never eat there again.

This is the worst cafe I have ever been to the food is terrible and was disgusting the tables were dirty and was unpleasant to eat her never coming her again or recommending rude staff as well sad
Master Diner
Not great. Filthy table upon arrival yesterday. Never cleaned at any point whilst we were there. A real feeling of lack of coordination from the FOH staff. Food was average. Not bad but certainly not memorable. Doubt I will return or recommend.

This was not a good experience. I did not like the look of the meals on other tables but as I had agreed to meet a friend there, I ordered juice and a 'home made' sausage roll from the cabinet - not usual food for me but I hoped it would be ok. It wasn't. It looked grey and had a huge seed of some sort in it - it really made me wonder what I was eating, so I decided not to risk it. The juice was average - can you make a mistake with juice? I sat in the outside area because it seemed stuffy inside. The table had not been wiped and the area seemed dirty in general.
Summary: Service okay. Food terrible. Ambiance none Didn't risk the coffee. Worth a try? Definitely not.

Lunch today for two. One order brought out was wrong and the other had a key ingredient missing. Not so hard when it is a glorified sandwich. First visit and will not be back. Inside there are too many tables too close together. More pleasant outside. Service was ok. Not sure how it survives with so much better competition close by.

Had lunch at Uncle Alberts yesterday, I ordered a all day breakfast bacon, hash brown, poached eggs, fried tomato and toast. The toast and bacon were ok the poached eggs were solid, the fried tomato was a shell of tomato, the hash brown was full of oil my black coffee was great it took around 25 minutes for the meal to arrive. My wife had falafal on toasted Turkish bread which wasn't toasted and she had integestion all afternoon.
Uncle Albert's was a great place to eat (3years since my last visit) I think the place is in needs a shake up.

Walked in and no one so much as looked at us. Steak sandwich was ok but nothing to write home about. Arancini balls were nice but salad looked and tasted old.
JG
Very average all round. Service was adequate but dirty dishes were left on table for a long period of time. Eggs were overcooked for eggs Benedict, very disappointing to have hard boiled eggs on top of one slice ham, on one slice of bread. Breakfast burger was ok but I would try elsewhere next time!
James Milosh
Very unimpressed. My order was wrong, and my girlfriends order (eggs Benedict) had a couple of gum leaves left in it. This implies that the spinach hadn't been washed. Staff were not apologetic. Got my money back and left. All in all a poor experience

Friendly service, good coffee, value for money, great location, varied menu, fantastic breakfasts.

I don't get it!!. Please explain to me how this place has an 84% positive review!!! extremely disappointed with everything besides the customer service. There are so many better options on the parade!

Popular but..... Uncle Albert is in a wonderful location - in an arcade where you can sit inside or outside with the traffic passing to the left and right. - and you can take your dog here. However when i had coffee and cake there last Friday I was disappointed. Service is good I must say. But the carrot cake was stale. that annoys me. It is not hard to check on the freshness of cakes. Cake slices are not cheap any more either. So this was disappointing.

Awful - avoid eating here!! Nachos was corn chips with pasta sauce, unmelted packet grated cheese, a teaspoon of avocado and ridiculous amount of sour cream!!! How can you mess up nachos? It's such a simply dish. Will never be returning.
Laura
Terrible excuse for nachos!. Sorry, Albert, but nachos aren't made from stale corn chips, rich pasta sauce and un-melted packet cheese. When I said "at least you can't go wrong with nachos" I never thought I could be so wrong. These were barely edible.

Fortunately, we also had a falafel wrap - unfortunately, the hummus was that special invisible hummus and the falafels we're made of flour. Not even chickpea flour.

Never again. I think the only reason this place ever has customers is because Norwood isn't exactly setting the standards for good food.

Consistently tasty fresh food. Breakfast is always great. Reasonably priced, service is ok. Some ice in the freshly squeezed juice would be my only suggestion..
Mrsashleap
Great convenient location, decent coffee and breakfast options, especially the poached pear French toast. Have also had wraps from here which were fresh and tasty. Recommended for a quick bite before or after shopping

VERY BAD SERVICE. Used to be a huge fan of this little cafe and often frequented it. I hadn't been in ages and upon returning to Adelaide I decided to take a trip back there. I was absolutely appalled at the service I received. I ordered light meal and a coffee. The coffee was cold and the food brought out was not as described on the menu. The assistant at the counter when ordering was rude and abrupt and wholly disinterested in customers. Took the waitresses over 30 minutes to clear finished plates from the table. A very big disappointment to say the least

Avoid them if you dont like to be cheat !!

Really lovely coffee but quite average food for lunch. The breakfast menu looked very yummy, so maybe the cafes charm/appeal is based on that, but definitely not a standout lunching venue.

Best Coffee in Adelaide !. Uncle Alberts coffee is always good, has been for years, & the baristas do a great job.
They use D'Angelo coffee beans which are consistently good.
The food is also always nice with regular changes to the menu and has a nice outdoor eating area in the Norwood Mall.

Consistently good over many years! Great coffee, food and service. Never disappoints, and excellent value.

Ate here last weekend for breakfast. had simple bacon and eggs dish, i enjoyed it. good portion size, good service.

Food 9/10 atmosphere 7/10 customer service 7/10 coffee 9/10

Food was delicious, recommend the french toast. Coffee was equally as amazing, perfect.
Sitting outdoors was good to be outside and see and hear other things around. The chairs and tables outside could be more visually appealing. Had to find menus when we got there, were not asked how our food was or if we wanted water or anything else.
When did go up to order the gentleman who served us was friendly and remember where we were sitting which was nice. Worth heading to uncle alberts for a coffee.
Julie
Good and consistant. Great food, good service and at a reasonable price, one of the delights of Norwood.

Hidden gem!. After years of walking past this overlooked café in the heart of norwood, I finally tried it out after realising that argo's was full, I'm glad I went here instead! I was expecting run of the mill coffee shop sandwiches, but Uncle Albert's had a great selection that left me wondering what to choose! In the end I went with the vegie burger, which was on a light bap roll and had a chickpea patty inside. It was bursting of flavour but wasn't too heavy like some burgers. I felt really satisfied with my choice. Next time I'll try the tandoori chicken wrap or the falafel wrap which my friends had. I had a bite of each and both were delicious. Staff were very friendly and prices were VERY reasonable - freshly made lunch for three for $30! I will definitely be returning, could not recommend it more.
Marcus
This is an amazing place for lunch or breakfast. We got a chicken burger, salmon salad and roast pumpkin and quinoa salad. All was amazing. Sitting outside is a touch noisy but not detrimental to the experience. The service is quick and the staff are very polite

Sensational coffee!! The staff were very helpful, fun and professional. The food was very good too. Would highly recommend and will be coming again.

A local gem. Who needs fancy schmancy when the prices are this good?
Urbanphile
Urbanphile. Let's face it there are plenty of cafes in Norwood. Alberts is simply the best all round - excellent service, good food and (so often lacking today) GREAT COFFEE. The pricing would seem to be locked in some kind of time warp - value for money in spades. Recommended.

Really Nice. The coffee is always excellent, Nice selection of cakes.
I really love having breakfast at this place!
Just a really nice place to relax and enjoy a coffee.

I must also agree with Harry. Living locally I often pop down to Uncle Alberts in the mornings on my walk and do enjoy a milkshake. My hat goes off to the dlightful staff who are always so friendly and the kitchen who prepare the most divine food at prices I haven't seen since the eighties. A Norwood icon, great food, the most generous portions at basic cost and above all the best service going around. You're on your own Heidi.

Sorry Heidi but I must blatantly disagree with your review!!!!!! As another 'regular milkshake consumer' I am a HUGE fan of the size offered by the 5 dollar shake at uncle alberts. I am racking my brain to think of another cafe bringing out a milkshake still in the more than ample sized tin from the milkshake maker itself. I'm unsure what you believe is a medium sized coffee perhaps you are from America with oversized smalls and mediums! Thumbs up from me for the uncle alberts shake!!!!
Heidi Rademacher
Milkshake Ripp-off. Being a regular consumer of milkshakes I know the typical size of a standard milkshake. Well the one I was served today was half the usual size and left me speechless!
It was no larger than a medium take-away coffee yet I was still charged $5:00......
I will never again go to this over-priced eatery.

Lovely lunctime fare. Great coffee and a regular clientele have kept this place ticking over for years. The food is always seasonal and tasty, and is the perfect lunch time stop if you are in Norwood and don't fancy a big pasta meal. Traditional favourites make this place popular with the whole family.

Now why is this cafe always busy? I am not sure, so I decided to go and find out. It is situated inside the Norwood mall, surrounded by shops, bakery, supermarkets, book shops. The outdoor seating was full, so that must be a good sign, with a few empty tables and seats inside, we decided to sit down.
On The Chopping Board
I have never heard of Uncle Albert's Cafe, so when I mentioned to someone at work that I would be going, I was surprised at the fact that they knew what I was talking about. Always on the hunt for a new brunch location I decided to give this a go. On a side note: If anyone else has any new brunch location recommendations, let me know - I am willing to try! Not knowing Norwood very well, I had some trouble trying to find this place as it is located at Norwood Mall in amongst other stores just off the main Parade strip.

The other two were more adventures and opted for the burgers. DC got a breakfast burger, which had your typical breakfast stuff (eggs, bacon, avocado) sandwiched in between a large burger bun. It was tasty and it might be the thing I’d order the next time I’m there again.

Door stop; 7.90 A simple bite of free range poached egg, smashed avocado on 8 seed bread at Uncle Albert’s in the Norwood Mall a few doors down from Nordburger , the door stop lacked some flavour so a bit of salt and pepper did the trick. Breakfast and lunch is served at Uncle Albert’s with with coffee supplied by local SA roaster Tony D’Angelo of D’Angelo Coffee . Uncle Alberts is at the centre of the Norwood Mall not far from the Gloria Jean's outlet. It has plenty of seating inside and outside. It does a good range of reasonably priced breakfasts and lunches. The walls are used for regular art exhibits ...
