If you’re looking for great Chinese in Oakleigh then this is the place to go too. At Tea Garden you can dine in or there are take away options. I always love getting Special Fried Rice and Singapore Noodles 😁
This little gem tucked away in a corner of a major intersection in Chadstone/Oakleigh is worth a visit. If you want to snag a parking space, then maybe come for an early dinner. The food is really good, but parking can be a problem.
I've been several times over the years here, and the food is always consistently good and satisfying. The service is sometimes a little slow and not always do the meals come out at the same time. There has been a time or two in the past when one person at the table was forced to eat ahead of the others because their meals weren't out, and it kind of defeats the purpose of going to eat out together, but of late, it has vastly improved. Perhaps they've changed hands, but either way, it's definitely better than years ago (so give it another try if that put you off coming here).
I usually order the Battered Chicken in Mandarin Sauce (pictured here but without capsicum, which is why it looks bare), or the Chicken Fried Rice. Also pictured here is the Deep Fried Ice Cream which I love. Not the best I've ever had, but quite good for sure.
I think the pricing of the food is good, the polite - if not spotty - service is good (overall), and it's not one of those restaurants where you're rushed out of the door. If you're looking for homey/comforting Chinese food, then this is the place to come!
My 4.5 stars out of 5 is based on this restaurant at its best. It is so hit and miss, one night you might get a hit and boy when u do is it amazing, chicken is actual chicken like most of their other meats. Tasty and fresh ingredients, crispy and light batter. So thats on the hit nights, the miss nights are still better than most other local asian places but there food for some reason just doesnt seem as fresh and the dishes take so long to come out! but i do recommend and i do enjoy eating here!!
Went here for Yum Cha recently and it was quite busy. It's a rather small place with a lot of tables so there isn't a lot of space for the usual Yum Cha trolleys. Instead, waiters come around with food on little trays - only problem is that by the time they reach you, the food you want is gone, taken by the tables before you. In the end, you take what you can get and left wanting. Service is friendly and accommodating enough. Food although on the pricier side, is pretty decent. Plump delicious dumplings, lots of fried options, only just ok chicken feet - not enough variety as usual standard dishes weren't on offer.
A friend put me onto this place. It was definitely okay Chinese, I wouldn't rave about it, but I also wouldn't rant about it. It was nice, good, standard Chinese food. A bit expensive all things considered but one of the better places in the area.
This place is hit and miss. Some nights its absolutely amazing the food tastes so fresh there dishes have great cuts of meat its one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in its good night's. But then it has its bad nights where you feel sick after there food, there service is poor your main meal comes 5 min before your rice. But I do love this place the food quality is there signature.
A favourite for family dinners, Tea Garden offers exquisite Cantonese fare within a smart suburban setting.
The staff are friendly, professional, and efficient.
Quite a small place and so there aren't the typical 'trolleys'. I like some of the dishes, others are pretty mediocre. One interesting to point out is that their 'cheong fun' is pan fried with xo sauce instead of the usual steamed with char Siew or prawn inside. I quite like it! Quite an ok place for yumcha! Not my favourite in Melbourne but definitely not the worst!
Great meals with great service. If you like to go more than once to a restaurant then this is one of those places. Food is presented very well and timed well to Good range of beverages/wines. Peking Duck is the best. Try and ask for the crepes dessert ... its worth the wait as its not always available. Its a compact restaurant size but not too noisy. Always honours promotions and discounts. Well worth it for lunch and dinner.
Hidden Gem in front of our faces!. We called ahead and made a booking for 1pm Yum Cha on Sunday and when we arrived were glad we did, very busy for a relatively small place but we were greeted straight away and taken to our table. Shortly after the Yum Cha offerings started to flow via waiters & trays rather than the usual trolleys. We loved the food including Wasabi Prawns, various dumplings and my favourite of steamed pork buns. Staff were friendly, efficient and professional, we took our time eating and didn’t feel rushed even though the restaurant was busy. Hidden gem right in front of our faces – we will be back!
Tea Garden is a sophisticated Chinese restaurant where outstanding service and care is taken to ensure your dining experience is a celebration of quality food and wine
Fantastic food, staff and atmosphere. Had the Peking duck banquet and Chinese pancakes. Yummy! Highly recommended.
Nice food and good service on a reasonably quiet wed night. Dumplings for entree were very good. Salt n pepper calamari was very tender, however, menu description of sliced pork with garlic and shallots was actually diced pork with onions. Still nice but expectations not met.
Oh What a Night! Great Place to Take Friends Too!. The occasion was a birthday celebration....Mine.
I booked a table for 6 at 7:30 pm on Friday 9th Jan. 2015.
We ordered three entrees for 6, each have the same items. eg San Choi Bau, Prawn Cutlets and a Satay Skewer.
They were each served on individual plates and proved to be very enjoyable.
Constantly excellent. The food, service and ambience are the best one can expect. The yum cha is delicious, tasty but not heavy or oily. I am just surprise, as a long time customer, that its Urbanspoon rating is so low (67%???). I would definitely put the Tea Garden in the 95% plus range and warmly recommend it. The price is reasonable as well.
One who has tried most chinese restaurants in melbourne. The food is very good quality. one should try their wasabi prawns which are my favourite and for the quality the price is modest compared with other up market Chinese restaurants. if you think Chinese food is about yum cha you are mistaken. Go there for the menu and not yum cha you wont be disappointed!!
Very very nice!. I am Japanese and I really like a good yum cha. This restaurant is excellent in both food and service. I was really impressed. I find the Urbanspoon rating strange. Is it a mistake? It should be in the 90% range!
What I ate was good but it is severely over priced!
Best Asian food in oakleigh by a mile. Very good quality
It did the trick. With a sister in law from New Zealand wanting to try Yum Cha, we thought we'd give the many times passed Tea Garden a go. And we were quite happy we did. The food was quite nice, although heavy with the pork and prawn items and the service was pleasantly helpful. Where the Tea Garden fell short is something I've noticed from several other Yum Cha's. It's almost like they have a timer or a dish limit on you, and when you reach a limit or time food service to your table simply stops. Perhaps there's an unwritten Yum Cha law I'm not aware of, however any restaurant that I leave still hungry from always feels like a little bit a let down.
In any case I enjoyed the food and would recommend the Tea Garden. Just eat breakfast beforehand.
How is this place only 63%?!. I came here with my partner and baby on Friday night and I honestly can't believe how this restaurant only has 63% likes.
We were greeted by very efficient staff and ordered our drinks which were sent out faster than we could choose dinner options.
As entrees we had the duck spring rolls and BBQ chicken fillet which were absolutely delicious. The spring rolls were fresh and hot and worth the $6. The BBQ chicken fillet was a large breast, battered with a BBQ sauce on top and was also simply delicious.
We went for the salt, pepper and chilli calamari which my partner had and it was a huge plate of calamari with a crispy coating and lots of flavours on the plate. He loved it.
I had the Mandarin chicken and it was again an enormous plate of chicken breast with a delicious mandarin sauce and some crispy vegetables. It was up there with one of the best chicken dishes I have had out at Chinese.
We also ordered the special friend rice which was full of BBQ pork pieces and was piping hot - we probably could have done without this as we had so much leftover, the servings were huge, I had at least 30 pieces of fresh hot chicken on my plate.
Overall it was a terrific dining experience with great staff and lots of parking on site as well at Punt Hill. I would recommend this place to anyone and it is a bit expensive, yet you are getting quality food, usually my chicken dishes anywhere else are all fatty bits of thigh in thick batter yet this was all breast and simply gorgeous!
A little on the expensive side but always go here for a nice treat. The best Chinese I have ever had. The food is Devine and service is impeccable. Great place.
Tasty dim sum!. Have been there few times! Enjoy myself so much each time. The dim sum like BBQ pork bun are nice and tasty! The lemon chicken fillet is well cooked! I had deep fried ice cream and sweet soup as my desserts. They are so tasty! Love the food in Tea Garden!
Yummy Chinese Cruisine. I had a delighting lunch in Tea Garden! The environment and service were excellent. It serves with authentic Chinese cruisine and I like the Peking duck most. The skin is crispy and it is freshly baked! I will definitely go again next time!
I had a lovely experience a few nights ago. Food and service was great. Left bursting at the seams. Will be going back soon.
Yummy-cha. I love coming here for Yumcha!
A downfall to this place might be that they are not a typical yumcha where they push around carts and you can point at what you want.
On weekdays they give you a list of yumcha items which you tick off and they cook then serve you (which could also be seen as an upside as the food is fresh).
On weekends, they bring out yumcha dishes on trays at a slow pace.
I actually enjoy visiting this restaurant on weekdays as I already know what my favourite yumcha dishes are which makes it easy to order. The dumplings taste really good and the service is decent.
Went there for yum cha & it was amazing. Great food, great service! You got to tick what you wanted & they brought it out rather then getting served via a trolley. Squid, xiao long bao excellent. Highly recommend.
YUM!! Great Chinese food!. I was a little wary of this restaurant after reading some reviews and only a small percentage liking it, however after trying it on the weekend I was so impressed and I cannot wait to go back!
It genuinely is one of the better Chinese meals I have had in a long time.
We ordered take away and the first thing I noticed upon arriving home was that the plastic containers with the calamari and chicken in them, both crumbed dishes, had a corner of the lid cut off so that the contents did not go too soggy with the steam and heat from the food. Something that I have never experienced with any other Chinese take away. So the chicken and the calamari were both still crisp and crunchy. The calamari had just the right amount of kick to it, and was incredibly tasty. The quality of the beef was fantastic, and the sauce was delicious. The chicken was of highest quality also, and cooked to perfection. With a side of Chinese sausage and some spring rolls which were also extremely yummy and flavoursome, my husband and my parents and I were all left with full and satisfied bellies.
It's on the pricey side, but a blast from the past with their lovely menu options. Loved the honey prawns, & fried ice cream.
Can't understand the poor reviews. I come here frequently and always find the food and service very good. It's a bit expensive for what you get but otherwise I find them to be consistently good.
Don't agree with negative reviews. Have been coming once a month for last 3 years with multiple allergy child and never had a bad experience. Always excellent service, relaxed atmosphere and the Peking duck is to die for. Highly recommended and given the number of other guests always present we are not the only ones
Yum Cha is the way to go here!. Tea Garden is a new local favorite of ours for Yum Cha... I thought I'd write a quick review since I noticed there are a few poor ones and that definitely hasn't been my experience here. That said, I've only ever been for Yum Cha, but have always had a good experience.
Sunday is a trolley, and all other days you order off a dim sum menu. Appears to be the same menu, possibly a couple of additions with the trolley (and with 20+ or so options on the yum cha menu, there's more than enough to choose from).
Very pleasant decor; easy parking; tucked under Punt Hill Apartments, it's an unlikely location for a good restaurant.
Agree with one of the other reviews that the desserts list could grow in size a little bit here ;)
Was good and a different yum cha experience. We maybe could have had more frequent dishes coming out. There was a lot of fried food on offer at one stage when all we want was dumplings. Overall we left satisfied
Whether it's a dine in or takeaway dinner experience, Tea Garden never disappoints. Excellent service, very friendly, and they also cater exceptionally well for those with food allergies. The dishes are delicious especially the sezchuan eye fillet and Kung po chicken. Will continue to dine in and take away and such a bonus if I don't wanto venture out to it's relative tea houses in Camberwell and Chinatown
Really good noodles. Pros: noodles and fried rice were really yum. good service
Cons: dumplings were watery, a little over prices
Tasty Yum Cha. Had yum cha with my family on a weekday lunch. The service was good. Was seated quickly and accommodated a pram easily. Lunch was ordered using a fairly small menu or yum cha items. I would have like to see more choice on the menu. What we had (mostly dumplings) was good but nothing special. Price was fairly standard for yum cha.
Fantasmic. I have had takeaway and dine in here and the food is always great. I dont want to discount other peoples opinions but there must be something wrong with the other posters here.
I agree that it is not cheap, but the food is great and service is also commenable. I will be back for sure!
Good Yum Cha option. .
Pro's:
- Good balance of deep fried versus steam Yum Cha choices
- Nice decor, small intimate room, linen tableclothes
- A good find in an unlikely place
Con's:
- Needs more variety on the dessert cart
I'm glad it was good. Few things are better in life IMO than a relaxing Yum Cha lunch was downed with several thimble-sized cups of Jasmine tea. It was with that thought in mind that four of us entered the Tea Garden Chinese Restaurant looking forward to a good old nosh up.
The restaurant is quite small and cramped and the Yum Cha is carried out by hand. Still, the atmosphere is quite good. In contrast to most Yum Cha restaurants I have been to, the decor was crisp, white and clean with little background noise.
I usually don't bother checking the price of the dishes when taking the kids out for Yum Cha - especially when I leave the Yum Cha epicure at home. It generally works out to be about $20 per person ($40 for the epicure). However, this time it proved to be a mistake.
A wasn't too displeased, however, because the food was really quite good. A traditionalist wouldn't be happy - there were no chicken's feet or hundred-year-old eggs to be found anywhere, however they did try to push the Jellyfish a couple of times. The wasabi prawns were magnificent and I went back for seconds with the BBQ Pork Dumplings. The crispy duck just melted in my mouth.
The the bill came - $137.50! I was expecting $80 - $90. It was easy to work out why - they charged for what is usually complimentary (or at least embarrassingly cheap): $12 for steamed rice (4x3), $12 for Jasmine Tea (4x3). The drinks were by the glass (I usually by a jug of soft drink) which raised the price - and that delicious small plate of duck was $12 as well.
I would have been quite annoyed if the food hadn't been great. I don't mind pay a premium for good food - and this was really good. In fact, probably the best Yum Cha ever. However, I won't be taking the epicure to this particular haunt.
Our ultimate go-to yum cha place, after trying out a number of well known yum cha places. Tea Garden is more like a boutique restaurant with nice and bright setting. Being a Cantonese, it’s fair to say that foods at Tea Garden are consistently great (not like other yum cha places whose foods are oily and heavy). Two of my young kids enjoy the foods too. Highly recommended!
Since the lobster was really cheap compared with few years back during the Christmas 2020, had one and I was amazed. Ordered lobster at other restaurants later on but never tasted so good compared with here. I’ve been here many times and this place always fascinates me.
Dinner tonight after a really tough day at Tea Garden in Hughsdale/Oakleigh under the Punt Hill Apartments. Absolutely beautiful, the food is 5 star and so are the staff. Decided following every hospital hell we will stay here and eat there every night.
This little gem tucked away in a corner of a major intersection in Chadstone/Oakleigh is worth a visit. If you want to snag a parking space, then maybe come for an early dinner. The food is really good, but parking can be a problem.

Exceptional value and quick service! The staff were always by your side without being pestering. Will be dining here again for sure! But will remember to make a reservation as it was very popular!
Food absolutely amazing. Best customer service from Ling. She helped us pick out some delicious meals, recommended amazing dishes for future and politely convinced us to try the banana fritter dessert. Wow. Super impressed. Will definitely be back soon!
