Review Tea Garden - Oakleigh

B
Sadly, inedible. Just had the fried egg noodles with chicken. It looked pretty good when it arrived, but tastes horrible - the chicken and vegetables were swimming in this claggy thick syrup-like goo that had absolutely no taste whatsoever. It it what I imagine cornflour and water would taste like - not the marinade/sauce you want. Went straight in the bin - $22.50 I'll never get back :(

Our ultimate go-to yum cha place, after trying out a number of well known yum cha places. Tea Garden is more like a boutique restaurant with nice and bright setting. Being a Cantonese, it’s fair to say that foods at Tea Garden are consistently great (not like other yum cha places whose foods are oily and heavy). Two of my young kids enjoy the foods too. Highly recommended!

Since the lobster was really cheap compared with few years back during the Christmas 2020, had one and I was amazed. Ordered lobster at other restaurants later on but never tasted so good compared with here. I’ve been here many times and this place always fascinates me.

Dinner tonight after a really tough day at Tea Garden in Hughsdale/Oakleigh under the Punt Hill Apartments. Absolutely beautiful, the food is 5 star and so are the staff. Decided following every hospital hell we will stay here and eat there every night.

This little gem tucked away in a corner of a major intersection in Chadstone/Oakleigh is worth a visit. If you want to snag a parking space, then maybe come for an early dinner. The food is really good, but parking can be a problem. I've been several times over the years here, and the food is always consistently good and satisfying. The service is sometimes a little slow and not always do the meals come out at the same time. There has been a time or two in the past when one person at the table was forced to eat ahead of the others because their meals weren't out, and it kind of defeats the purpose of going to eat out together, but of late, it has vastly improved. Perhaps they've changed hands, but either way, it's definitely better than years ago (so give it another try if that put you off coming here). I usually order the Battered Chicken in Mandarin Sauce (pictured here but without capsicum, which is why it looks bare), or the Chicken Fried Rice. Also pictured here is the Deep Fried Ice Cream which I love. Not the best I've ever had, but quite good for sure. I think the pricing of the food is good, the polite - if not spotty - service is good (overall), and it's not one of those restaurants where you're rushed out of the door. If you're looking for homey/comforting Chinese food, then this is the place to come!

Exceptional value and quick service! The staff were always by your side without being pestering. Will be dining here again for sure! But will remember to make a reservation as it was very popular!

Was here for Sunday yum Cha... hmmmmm after sitting around 1hr waiting for food decided to leave hungry. Food is very slow to come out and lacks variety. Nice restaurant good service. “But no food one”. Highlight would have to be the liu sha bao (流沙包)... molten salted egg custard. but be prepared to wait at least 15min after ordering. Everything you order requires min 15min. I can’t remember the last time I was here ... it’s probably better that way...

Food absolutely amazing. Best customer service from Ling. She helped us pick out some delicious meals, recommended amazing dishes for future and politely convinced us to try the banana fritter dessert. Wow. Super impressed. Will definitely be back soon!

decided to try a local Chinese place for some good ole Peking duck pancakes. So my partner and I decided to get some takeaway. By reading most of the reviews, our doubts of this place were high. Unfortunately, we we’re given unappetising pieces of duck that were soggy and overly huge with duck fat. Usually you serve your Peking duck in moderately thin pieces of duck with crispy skin on right? Please see photo of an example of the pre-rolled pieces come out as. Was not appealing at all as we are Asians who know what proper Peking duck is served and tasted. If you are looking for some proper Peking duck; try somewhere else that will not pre-roll them. Thanks for your time and the service though, Tea Garden.

If you’re looking for great Chinese in Oakleigh then this is the place to go too. At Tea Garden you can dine in or there are take away options. I always love getting Special Fried Rice and Singapore Noodles 😁

I decided to try this place again after 3 years and.....pathetic is the word. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Unbelievably slow service, with waiters trying to fill one's glass with water AFTER HAVING BEEN TOLD SEVERAL TIMES THAT WE DO NOT WANT WATER AT ALL. It looks as they do not understand English. The food is so slow to arrive (in a not even half full dining room) that one goes to sleep in between courses and the quality of food is REALLY BELOW MEDIOCRE, with prices that are horribly high for what one gets. A few years ago this establishment used to be a restaurant, while today is a loss of time and money. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Came across this yum cha for my auntie’s birthday. The service is incredibly slow and they give you water glass by glass rather than a jug (a bit annoying and inconvenient). The food is very mediocre, some of the filling in the dumplings is nice but some pieces were really rubbery.
The salt and pepper octopus was very nice though. Probably the best dish. Everything else feels like kind of artificial and lacks the potential to taste really great.

We just walked in with the chance for yum cha. We were lucky today thankfully no issues. I have always driven past this place hoping to pop in and today was the day. Yum Cha was ok. Not many varieties salt & pepper octopus was a standout. The rest was so so. Expensive also for what you get. Just buy up big at your Asian grocer and yum cha at home.

Been here many times, but today will be our last visit. From the time we stepped into the restaurant we felt unwanted. Where all other tables were given towels to clean their hands, we were just given the menu and a pen. We had most of our food come out at a reasonable time, but asking for water was an imposition, to the point we were just waved off and ignored. We must have asked 6 times. Possibly under staffed, but that is no way to treat your customers.
Pina Rizos
Have been coming here for years but today the service is not to standard at all. We asked 6 times and waited 30 mins to be served water and at one stage, the waiter waved me off! Don’t know if they have changed hands recently but this is service was below standard even for the basics. Being ignored while other tables were treated with a 5 star service really shows who they care about the most. It got to the point that the table next to us had been waiting over 45 minutes for the soup when other tables had been served a full course. Even if it was all because it was understaffed, a smile could’ve gone a long way.

Ordered take away and it was terrrrrrrrrrrible. Had the ginger spring onion prawns that frankly as a non Asian I could have cooked it better. The prawns were overcooked and the ginger was raw. The fried rice was acceptable as was the black bean beef. The chicken with vegetables and cashews was blunt and no real taste or flavour. Huge disappointment especially after a $75 price tag for take away. Not again thank you
Willtravelforfood17
Yum cha here is always inconsistent. Sometimes the dumplings don’t taste fresh but sometimes they are good. There also isn’t much variety. Service is OK. Good thing about this place is you can walk in without a reservation.

My 4.5 stars out of 5 is based on this restaurant at its best. It is so hit and miss, one night you might get a hit and boy when u do is it amazing, chicken is actual chicken like most of their other meats. Tasty and fresh ingredients, crispy and light batter. So thats on the hit nights, the miss nights are still better than most other local asian places but there food for some reason just doesnt seem as fresh and the dishes take so long to come out! but i do recommend and i do enjoy eating here!!

Went here for Yum Cha recently and it was quite busy. It's a rather small place with a lot of tables so there isn't a lot of space for the usual Yum Cha trolleys. Instead, waiters come around with food on little trays - only problem is that by the time they reach you, the food you want is gone, taken by the tables before you. In the end, you take what you can get and left wanting. Service is friendly and accommodating enough. Food although on the pricier side, is pretty decent. Plump delicious dumplings, lots of fried options, only just ok chicken feet - not enough variety as usual standard dishes weren't on offer.

I have to say my favourite thing I ordered here is the hot and spicy soup! Prices are slightly higher than the average chinese place but I guess you're paying for slightly better ambience and service
Lucy Tu
The food is pricy considering is just average, the waiters and waitresses are very lovely people, however, the current boss is rude (sorry, had to say it). Would not go again
Emily
A friend put me onto this place. It was definitely okay Chinese, I wouldn't rave about it, but I also wouldn't rant about it. It was nice, good, standard Chinese food. A bit expensive all things considered but one of the better places in the area.

This place is hit and miss. Some nights its absolutely amazing the food tastes so fresh there dishes have great cuts of meat its one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in its good night's. But then it has its bad nights where you feel sick after there food, there service is poor your main meal comes 5 min before your rice. But I do love this place the food quality is there signature.
Mrs Lavender
A bit pricy in comparison with other tea house , but food was good . The location was good too . It is bright inside the restaurant and wasn't that noisy compare to other tea house .

I have given this a half vote as seen.
Half for the food and a half for the interior.
The chairs and tables were neat, waiters/waitresses were focused and enjoyed their job. Everything worked out smoothly, quick and the food came around in time. However! Now it's the foods turn!
DA DA DAAAAAA!
The food was steamed dumplings and all then suddenly we got to a chinese sausage (pork) it was a no or on your plate. Me and my relatives were getting a bit excited at the time so we just went with a yes! We ended up with one bite in the finale of it all, sadly. All the other food was average, reasonable, but average. At the end when we got to the bills guess what was most expensive?

THE CHINESE SAUSAGE!!!!!!! :) :) :)
So from now on that place is known as the chinese sausage garden! :P

ROCKS!!!
A colleague bit into a dumpling and broke a tooth. They found a piece of road base rock in it, a piece around 1cm! How the hell does a piece of rock this large get into a dumpling. WILL NEVER BE BACK, although my colleague will, with a bill from his dentist!

A favourite for family dinners, Tea Garden offers exquisite Cantonese fare within a smart suburban setting.

The staff are friendly, professional, and efficient.
Catherine CY Tan
Quite a small place and so there aren't the typical 'trolleys'. I like some of the dishes, others are pretty mediocre. One interesting to point out is that their 'cheong fun' is pan fried with xo sauce instead of the usual steamed with char Siew or prawn inside. I quite like it! Quite an ok place for yumcha! Not my favourite in Melbourne but definitely not the worst!
Marc_luc
Great meals with great service. If you like to go more than once to a restaurant then this is one of those places. Food is presented very well and timed well to Good range of beverages/wines. Peking Duck is the best. Try and ask for the crepes dessert ... its worth the wait as its not always available. Its a compact restaurant size but not too noisy. Always honours promotions and discounts. Well worth it for lunch and dinner.

Never again. We had a group booking for 7pm and the way we were served was terrible. All smoke and mirrors. They claim to have specials and didnt charge the lower price, one of the table asked for chinese tea and they brought out for all 7 of us. Thinking this is complimentary we had to pay $17.50 for chinese tea. WTF!!! If we had known, we wouldnt have ordered it. That being said she assumed we all wanted it.
The waitress was abrupt, we asked for more hoisin sauce, she goes, its there. pointing to the half gone small dish. Hand towels were left on the table through out the night instead of being collected. We also was given the bill without even asking for it. Which shows they wanted us to leave.
Stay away, it claims to be cheap and good - but it isnt.

The food is ok, but you can do a lot better. The location is crap and clearing a wolf in sheeps clothing. What a gib!

Hidden Gem in front of our faces!. We called ahead and made a booking for 1pm Yum Cha on Sunday and when we arrived were glad we did, very busy for a relatively small place but we were greeted straight away and taken to our table. Shortly after the Yum Cha offerings started to flow via waiters & trays rather than the usual trolleys. We loved the food including Wasabi Prawns, various dumplings and my favourite of steamed pork buns. Staff were friendly, efficient and professional, we took our time eating and didn’t feel rushed even though the restaurant was busy. Hidden gem right in front of our faces – we will be back!

Tea Garden is a sophisticated Chinese restaurant where outstanding service and care is taken to ensure your dining experience is a celebration of quality food and wine

Fantastic food, staff and atmosphere. Had the Peking duck banquet and Chinese pancakes. Yummy! Highly recommended.

Nice food and good service on a reasonably quiet wed night. Dumplings for entree were very good. Salt n pepper calamari was very tender, however, menu description of sliced pork with garlic and shallots was actually diced pork with onions. Still nice but expectations not met.

Oh What a Night! Great Place to Take Friends Too!. The occasion was a birthday celebration....Mine.
I booked a table for 6 at 7:30 pm on Friday 9th Jan. 2015.

We ordered three entrees for 6, each have the same items. eg San Choi Bau, Prawn Cutlets and a Satay Skewer.
They were each served on individual plates and proved to be very enjoyable.

Constantly excellent. The food, service and ambience are the best one can expect. The yum cha is delicious, tasty but not heavy or oily. I am just surprise, as a long time customer, that its Urbanspoon rating is so low (67%???). I would definitely put the Tea Garden in the 95% plus range and warmly recommend it. The price is reasonable as well.
Conzoumis
One who has tried most chinese restaurants in melbourne. The food is very good quality. one should try their wasabi prawns which are my favourite and for the quality the price is modest compared with other up market Chinese restaurants. if you think Chinese food is about yum cha you are mistaken. Go there for the menu and not yum cha you wont be disappointed!!
Mtk55
Very very nice!. I am Japanese and I really like a good yum cha. This restaurant is excellent in both food and service. I was really impressed. I find the Urbanspoon rating strange. Is it a mistake? It should be in the 90% range!
Sigrana
Excellent food and reasonably priced!. I do not understand why some reviewers find this place overpriced: It is MUCH, MUCH BETTER than most of the "so called" best yum cha restaurants in Melbourne and much cheaper. The service is proper and the waiters / waitresses are very attentive and kind. Both my wife and I fully enjoyed the food and service. 67%? I THINK URBANSPOON HAS MADE A MISTAKE!!! TRY 95%!
Alimaude
What I ate was good but it is severely over priced!
Edward
Food and service was OK. Variety for Yum Cha was limited. What was available was good. Restaurant attempts to be up market. Overall a pricey place for Yum Cha
Chris
Staff friendly but unprofessional. Food not very good especially the BBQ pork which was dry as a bone. Very expensive for not very good Chinese food.
Xiaolang
Rude and slow customer service. The food was alright at this place but the customer service was terrible. Also, I wouldn't recommend the custard buns at this restaurant. One of the waiters was rude and in a rush to get away from us. We asked for chili sauce to have with our dumplings but even that took ages. At the end of the day, they even forgot one of our orders and charged us for an extra set of dumplings that we hadn't ordered. Great. Will not be returning to this place.

Best Asian food in oakleigh by a mile. Very good quality
Louise Longano Sollecito
What an amazing place to eat. The home made dim sims and calamari were just delicious and the beef with plumb sauce was tender and so tasty.
The serving sizes were plentiful
The staff were friendly and helpful. In fact Jimmy (the owner) served us himself. I cannot believe this restaurant could possibly receive a negative review.
We cannot wait to go back
Tom
It did the trick. With a sister in law from New Zealand wanting to try Yum Cha, we thought we'd give the many times passed Tea Garden a go. And we were quite happy we did. The food was quite nice, although heavy with the pork and prawn items and the service was pleasantly helpful. Where the Tea Garden fell short is something I've noticed from several other Yum Cha's. It's almost like they have a timer or a dish limit on you, and when you reach a limit or time food service to your table simply stops. Perhaps there's an unwritten Yum Cha law I'm not aware of, however any restaurant that I leave still hungry from always feels like a little bit a let down.

In any case I enjoyed the food and would recommend the Tea Garden. Just eat breakfast beforehand.

How is this place only 63%?!. I came here with my partner and baby on Friday night and I honestly can't believe how this restaurant only has 63% likes.

We were greeted by very efficient staff and ordered our drinks which were sent out faster than we could choose dinner options.

As entrees we had the duck spring rolls and BBQ chicken fillet which were absolutely delicious. The spring rolls were fresh and hot and worth the $6. The BBQ chicken fillet was a large breast, battered with a BBQ sauce on top and was also simply delicious.

We went for the salt, pepper and chilli calamari which my partner had and it was a huge plate of calamari with a crispy coating and lots of flavours on the plate. He loved it.

I had the Mandarin chicken and it was again an enormous plate of chicken breast with a delicious mandarin sauce and some crispy vegetables. It was up there with one of the best chicken dishes I have had out at Chinese.

We also ordered the special friend rice which was full of BBQ pork pieces and was piping hot - we probably could have done without this as we had so much leftover, the servings were huge, I had at least 30 pieces of fresh hot chicken on my plate.

Overall it was a terrific dining experience with great staff and lots of parking on site as well at Punt Hill. I would recommend this place to anyone and it is a bit expensive, yet you are getting quality food, usually my chicken dishes anywhere else are all fatty bits of thigh in thick batter yet this was all breast and simply gorgeous!
Kayleigh
A little on the expensive side but always go here for a nice treat. The best Chinese I have ever had. The food is Devine and service is impeccable. Great place.

Tasty dim sum!. Have been there few times! Enjoy myself so much each time. The dim sum like BBQ pork bun are nice and tasty! The lemon chicken fillet is well cooked! I had deep fried ice cream and sweet soup as my desserts. They are so tasty! Love the food in Tea Garden!
Ashleyc
Yummy Chinese Cruisine. I had a delighting lunch in Tea Garden! The environment and service were excellent. It serves with authentic Chinese cruisine and I like the Peking duck most. The skin is crispy and it is freshly baked! I will definitely go again next time!

A Place For Deluxe Chinese Cuisine and Dim Sum!!!!!!. Tea Garden is a must-go restaurant for deluxe Chinese cuisine and dim sum!

The special lunch offer is great with various combination. Dim sum and dessert are in great quality and freshly-made! The price is inexpensive with decent service provided.

Tea Garden is definitely one of my favorite restaurants! Will definitely dine in again!

I had a lovely experience a few nights ago. Food and service was great. Left bursting at the seams. Will be going back soon.

Yummy-cha. I love coming here for Yumcha!
A downfall to this place might be that they are not a typical yumcha where they push around carts and you can point at what you want.
On weekdays they give you a list of yumcha items which you tick off and they cook then serve you (which could also be seen as an upside as the food is fresh).
On weekends, they bring out yumcha dishes on trays at a slow pace.

I actually enjoy visiting this restaurant on weekdays as I already know what my favourite yumcha dishes are which makes it easy to order. The dumplings taste really good and the service is decent.
Nat Bik
Went there for yum cha & it was amazing. Great food, great service! You got to tick what you wanted & they brought it out rather then getting served via a trolley. Squid, xiao long bao excellent. Highly recommend.
Sarah
YUM!! Great Chinese food!. I was a little wary of this restaurant after reading some reviews and only a small percentage liking it, however after trying it on the weekend I was so impressed and I cannot wait to go back!
It genuinely is one of the better Chinese meals I have had in a long time.
We ordered take away and the first thing I noticed upon arriving home was that the plastic containers with the calamari and chicken in them, both crumbed dishes, had a corner of the lid cut off so that the contents did not go too soggy with the steam and heat from the food. Something that I have never experienced with any other Chinese take away. So the chicken and the calamari were both still crisp and crunchy. The calamari had just the right amount of kick to it, and was incredibly tasty. The quality of the beef was fantastic, and the sauce was delicious. The chicken was of highest quality also, and cooked to perfection. With a side of Chinese sausage and some spring rolls which were also extremely yummy and flavoursome, my husband and my parents and I were all left with full and satisfied bellies.
FeeBee
It's on the pricey side, but a blast from the past with their lovely menu options. Loved the honey prawns, & fried ice cream.

Expensive :(
Maria
Can't understand the poor reviews. I come here frequently and always find the food and service very good. It's a bit expensive for what you get but otherwise I find them to be consistently good.
SteveD
Disappointing. I remember when this place first opened, the word was to expect 'Tea House on Burke' standard. In the early days, it was pretty good.

Our visit last weekend was pretty disappointing - food was average and service was poor.
Dianewic
TOO RUDE. My family patronised Tea Garden several times, although waiters and hostess made us feel a bit uncomfortable appearing to be brusque. I recommended the place to our friends and we had a big gathering for a party there. We thought we had found our favourite Chinese place in our vicinity, until one day the hostess was downright rude to us implying we were not ordering enough. We have not gone there since, having mentioned to the her on our departure that we did not appreciate her rudeness.
The owners of this place should read reviews, and give the waiters and hostesses a lesson in hospitality if they are to keep their customers happy.
Christine Diansuri
The food was below average. Not recommended, AVOID!
Kirsty
Don't agree with negative reviews. Have been coming once a month for last 3 years with multiple allergy child and never had a bad experience. Always excellent service, relaxed atmosphere and the Peking duck is to die for. Highly recommended and given the number of other guests always present we are not the only ones

Yum Cha is the way to go here!. Tea Garden is a new local favorite of ours for Yum Cha... I thought I'd write a quick review since I noticed there are a few poor ones and that definitely hasn't been my experience here. That said, I've only ever been for Yum Cha, but have always had a good experience.

Sunday is a trolley, and all other days you order off a dim sum menu. Appears to be the same menu, possibly a couple of additions with the trolley (and with 20+ or so options on the yum cha menu, there's more than enough to choose from).

Very pleasant decor; easy parking; tucked under Punt Hill Apartments, it's an unlikely location for a good restaurant.

Agree with one of the other reviews that the desserts list could grow in size a little bit here ;)

Very Disappointing - Avoid!. Our party went there for my birthday - and what a disappointment. Upon our arrival, our BYO wine was unceremoniously whisked away from the table, seemingly never to be seen again - it took forever for the staff to retrieve it and reluctantly top up our glasses throughout the long, long evening. It was not an overly busy night, but I had to walk over to the counter to arrange for menus, and again to be served, after having signalled in vain from our table that we were ready to order. The waiter who finally showed up was a sullen, unfriendly chap, who turned out to be the "manager". Steadfastly resisting our pleas for help on recommending dishes, he made the ordering a chore. As a result, the food, when it finally started to arrive, was not what we expected, and was presented in an unappetising way - the bland tastes were no surpise. It was about 90 minutes after ordering that the mains started to appear, but three of our party had to wait 20 minutes longer for their dish, so the rest of us had to decide to start, or to let our meals go cold. We kept wondering how we had insulted the owner's family, as we thought that could have been the only reason we received such appalling service. Then we noticed that other diners appeared equally unimpressed by the alternating absent and rude service. I am surprised by other comments that the prices are reasonable; there is far better value, quality and service just down the road in Springvale, Carnegie or Burwood.

7/10. Had the 'executive lunch special' $20, 3 courses with aglass of wine. in this day and age, they should have substitutions for alcohol, some of us are stuck on our p plates.. they refused to give us soft drinks in place. also had to ask for water. enjoyed our meals though. staff are rude. wont be back
Lauren
Was good and a different yum cha experience. We maybe could have had more frequent dishes coming out. There was a lot of fried food on offer at one stage when all we want was dumplings. Overall we left satisfied
Foodologist
Whether it's a dine in or takeaway dinner experience, Tea Garden never disappoints. Excellent service, very friendly, and they also cater exceptionally well for those with food allergies. The dishes are delicious especially the sezchuan eye fillet and Kung po chicken. Will continue to dine in and take away and such a bonus if I don't wanto venture out to it's relative tea houses in Camberwell and Chinatown

Really good noodles. Pros: noodles and fried rice were really yum. good service
Cons: dumplings were watery, a little over prices
Ronny
Tasty Yum Cha. Had yum cha with my family on a weekday lunch. The service was good. Was seated quickly and accommodated a pram easily. Lunch was ordered using a fairly small menu or yum cha items. I would have like to see more choice on the menu. What we had (mostly dumplings) was good but nothing special. Price was fairly standard for yum cha.
Brettieh
Fantasmic. I have had takeaway and dine in here and the food is always great. I dont want to discount other peoples opinions but there must be something wrong with the other posters here.
I agree that it is not cheap, but the food is great and service is also commenable. I will be back for sure!

Absolutely DO NOT RECOMMEND. I made a takeaway order and my experience with this restaurant was absolutely TERRIBLE. In SHORT....I was made to argue with a woman at the register for ONE HOUR, because as i arrived home with my order, I had realized that one of the dishes was wrong. I explained what the problem was with the dish (i am not a rude person, i explained it calmly and fairly), and i was accused countless times of having ordered the wrong item from the menu...after i had explained many a time that she had put through the order knowing that i was unsure about it, and that she was not being clear enough. After one hour...(and due to the fact that they were closing) after being laughed at (literally) and told that she could not do anything for me...an that i should just go.,.i was asked if i was going to leave when they closed up the shop...and she finally offered to replace the dish i had recieved with the one i wante originally. In saying this, i had not only been asking for a $20 dish to be replaced for 1 HOUR..but in the end i was given the SAME meat from the first dish...except it was CUT INTO PIECES....which is NOT what i asked for...it was disgusting. Horrible service..any other place would have graciously replaced the order. But not tea garden. terrible terrible terrible!

Good Yum Cha option. .
Pro's:
- Good balance of deep fried versus steam Yum Cha choices
- Nice decor, small intimate room, linen tableclothes
- A good find in an unlikely place

Con's:
- Needs more variety on the dessert cart

Fail!. We left hungry. Poor service, completely inadequate amount of food, and total failure to notice this by the large number of staff circling the tables! Lack of variety in the offering, and a staple dish such as cheong fun (rice rolls) was not available upon request. It's a shame - because they could have made a lot more money from us. Kitchen needs to turn things out a lot quicker, staff need to be more attentive, and the manager needs to step up!
M
Don't waste your time. Not wanting to use large mounts of words to say basically very disappointing. The service was terribly slow and unfriendly, the food was disappointing, the entrees were OK but a bit watery (hot too). The meals were very average fare, if yours was actually cooked and served! The Tea Garden reminded me of 1980's country Victoria Chinese resteraunt. the only difference was the missing numbers for items on the menu. IN short don't waste your time or money here, there are plenty of others to chose from.

I'm glad it was good. Few things are better in life IMO than a relaxing Yum Cha lunch was downed with several thimble-sized cups of Jasmine tea. It was with that thought in mind that four of us entered the Tea Garden Chinese Restaurant looking forward to a good old nosh up.

The restaurant is quite small and cramped and the Yum Cha is carried out by hand. Still, the atmosphere is quite good. In contrast to most Yum Cha restaurants I have been to, the decor was crisp, white and clean with little background noise.

I usually don't bother checking the price of the dishes when taking the kids out for Yum Cha - especially when I leave the Yum Cha epicure at home. It generally works out to be about $20 per person ($40 for the epicure). However, this time it proved to be a mistake.

A wasn't too displeased, however, because the food was really quite good. A traditionalist wouldn't be happy - there were no chicken's feet or hundred-year-old eggs to be found anywhere, however they did try to push the Jellyfish a couple of times. The wasabi prawns were magnificent and I went back for seconds with the BBQ Pork Dumplings. The crispy duck just melted in my mouth.

The the bill came - $137.50! I was expecting $80 - $90. It was easy to work out why - they charged for what is usually complimentary (or at least embarrassingly cheap): $12 for steamed rice (4x3), $12 for Jasmine Tea (4x3). The drinks were by the glass (I usually by a jug of soft drink) which raised the price - and that delicious small plate of duck was $12 as well.

I would have been quite annoyed if the food hadn't been great. I don't mind pay a premium for good food - and this was really good. In fact, probably the best Yum Cha ever. However, I won't be taking the epicure to this particular haunt.

Average food, poor service. I went to the tea garden for yum cha and while the food was acceptable, the range was very limited. many of the yum cha staples were not available, but my main objection to this restaurant was the service.

half-way through our meal we were told by a very rude manager that we were due to leave in 5 minutes so that they could begin their second round of yum cha service (a fact that we had not been alerted to before hand despite the early booking AND booking confirmations that we had made)

no apologies were made, and in fact, we were made to feel as if we were the ones at fault.

i do NOT recommend this restaurant.
