Review Mezedakia - Oakleigh

Judith Tratner
An hidden gem. Authentic Greek food at its best. One of those places you want to keep for yourself. Private . But on the other hand need to share the love. Mains changes with seasonality to use best local produce, some come directly from lovely owner Maria's garden. Come with some patient because all items are made fresh once you order. Amazing. Just amazing. We will be back.

This hidden little gem is tucked away upstairs from Portman street or you can access it through a car park off Chester St. When you open the door you will be surprised at the classy decor and the layout is open plan. We went here for a friends birthday and there was 9 of us in total. We sampled many items from the menu including calamari, greek salad, dips and bread, lamb, saganaki, meatballs, risoni and beef , cos salad, chicory salad, chicken and linguini , moussaka, baklava and galaktoboureko . All the dishes were delicious except the one unusual dish that was a little salty was the cos salad which was very surprising. The staff were very friendly, attentive and accommodating. At the end of our meal the chef and owner Maria came over to our table for a conversation with the table. This is great as it made the meal feel like we were at home with our mum. Very warm, caring and friendly She told us that her daughter had just had a baby. Our party had 2 pregnant ladies and our little man was with us , so she was able to easily relate. We will be recommending this to other friends

Best lamb I've had at a restaurant. Other meals don't match up to how amazing the Lamb is here.

first time dining there tonight. Excellent food & service. A hidden treasure for greek food & ambience.

This was not my first choice for a Greek restaurant this particular evening but I had left it late to make a booking and settled for Mezedakia. My wife and I took an overseas friend intending to impress him with the local Greek food but we had a very disappointing experience. We arrived on time but were taken to a messy table and had to wait for someone to clean it. The waitress told us she could not help us for maybe 15 minutes. We also had our bottle of wine rather roughly confiscated when we asked if it was BYO. However, the waitress did return more quickly than promised and was very helpful in guiding us through the menu. We shared a number of small plates including calamari, bread and dips and meat skewers. The food was average quality - nothing special. The dishes were delivered in a timely manner. One dish was overlooked but we did not push the issue as the evening was disappointing and we wanted to leave.

Fine, hearty Greek food. Full flavoured; menu actually quite straightforward - six main meals across a range of protein plus vegetarian, complemented by extensive entree/tapas selection.
Drinks menu including Greek wines & spirits. Confident attention to detail and service. Note that the menu may adjust to seasonal variations (no chicken with okra & tomato on my visit)
Recommended for an enjoyable night out

We've lived in Oakleigh for 10 years, and had never made it up the stairs to Mezedakia until last night. What have been doing? It was fantastic! The room is beautiful, and the food was just so good. We loved all of it- saganaki, fava dip, roast lamb- but the chicken with okra was seriously outstanding, and we agreed as a table that the baklava was the best any of us had EVER had, and that is truly saying something. We have already planned our return visit with three other sets of friends. If you want to do something wonderfully Greek, but different from the usual scene in Oakleigh, go to Mezedakia immediately.

Amazing food. Discovered by word of mouth, and its so hidden that I can't imagine finding it any other way. Have eaten here twice and was amazed by the flavours both times. Will definitely be back!

We used to really enjoy this place as there food and desserys were to die for. Sadly the last time we visited we were given a basket of goodness-knows-how-old bread, and filthy drinking glasses. My dd ordered a milkshake which had sour milk in and was undrinkable.... we made our disappointment know and have been a little nervous to try again.

Once again this restaurant delivered it's usually high standard. The food was excellent, the service impeccable and great atmosphere. My only complaint, if it can be called that, was there was too much food. 😋17 very happy customers. Thanks Maria and staff.

Our dinner experience last Saturday was a huge disappointment. The restaurant had staff issues but we weren't told or warned about his until we had to complain about the lack of service after we had been there at least 2 hours. We even had to ask for water 3 times and ended up just getting our own. Worse still was seeing other tables get fed & leave when they had arrived well after we did. We should have been told about the issues when we arrived and maybe guided to which menu items we could order, or given some nibbles to be going on with, or even an explanation! We eventually left the place hungry & too late to have dinner. It takes such a long time to get a large group of people together on a Saturday night which made this experience such a let down knowing it would be a while till we could get together again. The lack of communication and way we were ignored was very unprofessional
Wreckingball
Lousy service with the restaurant less than half full. Slow to take orders, slow to serve, mixed up orders. Meals when did arrive and my lamb roast was cold, over cooked and inedible.

Ryan Zischke
Meatballs were atrocious and came out cold. Dips were too garlicky. Calamari was flavourless with a rubbery texture. Way too overpriced. Will never return.
Hayley
A huge disappointment. Paid a fair bit of money for a terrible meal. Dips were garlicky. Meatballs cold and flavourless - they were mostly breadcrumbs. Calamari was poor quality. Would not go back.

Yum yum yum every time yum!! Quick delicious homemade food! We had christening there birthday and just dinners every time what ever we ordered came quick and fresh and delicious !!!

Delicious home style food and wonderful service. If I was lucky enough to have a Greek grandmother, this is what her meals would taste like. Loved it. We'll be back.

This hidden gem is unbelievable, have been there a few times now and the quality of food is sensational. Everything is fresh and homemade like mum's cooking. Can't get enough of the dips and the slow cooked lamb with potatoes. The service is great, if you're after homemade traditional foods this is the place !!

It is a Hidden Gem. I do not really like walking into a restaurant that I cannot see from the street, and with MEZEDAKIA, I have passed by it over the last 4 years without considering it. There is a sign at the front MEZEDAKIA which has a staircase going upstairs, looks dodgy! I was eventually invited by friends in April 2015 and went for dinner. I was kicking myself as to why i had NOT gone there before! The restaurant setting and ambiance was fantastic, the choice of food was amazing and EXCELLENT, the majority being TRADITIONAL Greek Dishes. A hidden gem! The chef is the owner and the selection of platters, cooked meals was unbelievable. We had a mixture of basically everything she had there and I can say that you would by crazy not to go there. I have recommended this restaurant to a number of friends and they all love it and I will be back and back again.

Great experience!. We did our homework before selecting this restaurant and were braced for what might have been a poor experience. To our delight this restaurant proved all the nay sayers wrong.
The staff were delightful and humorous, the food was absolutely delicious and the wait times were fine. We had a table of six, ate a set menu of Saganaki, baby gyros, out of this world mushrooms, Greek salad and a large sized main of our choice, which not many of us managed to finish.
The only bad thing I could say is that it was a bit noisy when it filled up, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be authentic Greek if it was quiet.
If you want great, 'feels like it's come out of Yia Yia's kitchen', Greek food I would definitely head to Mezedakia.
Elanaskliar
Great food, wonderful service!. I was there today for the first time. read the reviews only after i already booked, so was doubtful when coming, but i have to say that i have no idea what they're talking about! I had a birthday party for 12 adults and 2 toddlers, and we all had a LOVELY evening (18\10\14). the entrees came very quickly and were delicious (i particularly recommend the mushrooms). the service was very friendly and gave us great recommendations for what food to order (moosakah, fish, calamary, goat and beef - these dishes were a huge success in our table - we shared all the mains to get to taste a bit of all!). the mains came quite quickly as well, even though the restaurant was full. prices were reasonable, all the food was fresh and very tasty. would definitely recommend and will definitely come back!

Disappointing. A very disappointing evening. Firstly our cosy corner table was given away to another party who couldn't remember what name they had booked their own table under forcing us, a party of 6, to be squeezed onto a table of 4! Then the only vegetarian in our group sat watching the rest of us eat our banquet while his prawn entrée was forgotten even after numerous complaints...finally giving up. Thanks for the ouzo shots but can we suggest more staff and making more of an effort to keep customers happy - PS: No point saying we didn't charge you for the prawns when you didn't even serve them!
Eric.issko
Cannot serve prawns in over 3 hours. Went to Mezedakia with my partner and friends for my birthday dinner last night 23 August. My partner does not eat meat or chicken but does eat fish. Ordered prawns for entree. Now midday on 24 August and still waiting for them. They were hopeless with their service only providing water quickly otherwise it was a long wait for the food which overall was quite nice but the service was terrible they do not listen even after going up to the"kitchen" and the bar a few times to let them know they had not served an entree to my starving partner. No apologies not even some bread for the table even though the 5 off us ordered a banquet. And the place was not even full. The "kitchen" is so unorganised and they cannot cope as it is too small and not enough staff there. Very disappointing and free ouzo shots don't make up for not getting a meal. And they had the cheek to charge my partner for his main meal which also came very late. Not going back there again as there are many other better and good Greek restaurants choose from in Oakleigh.

Went on Saturday night with my family of 5 of which 2 are growing late teen boys. The food was very tasty and generous. The service by Ioanna and her team were wonderful. Time was spent explaining the dishes and the menu. Great atmosphere. Not too big where you get lost. We will definitely be coming back ...
Vicki
Not impressed!. Went to this restaurant after reading reviews and were extremely disappointed; service very slow, didn't get offered dessert or coffee; food is basic, main dishes looked as though the food was thrown on the plates and none of our main meals were served at the same time. Can't recommend this restaurant at all!

It was a wet and miserable Wednesday which disappeared entirely when we entered Mezedakia for lunch. We were the only customers but received the warmest welcome and hospitality. Beautiful tasty food cooked as we watched, no pretension, just great 'home cooked' dishes. Maria brought out additional complimentary small plates and shared her stories about home, ingredients, how to share the kitchen responsibilities. We will definitely return to taste more dishes.

Fresh simple food done well. We had a tasty dinner of Saganaki, Calamari, Tasty Meatballs and the Bread + Dips, brought out when ready with friendly service.

Tucked upstairs behind an unassuming door.. :)

AMAZING. Brilliant Greek food. Maria's warm and hospitable nature along with the rest of the family is a fantastic accompaniment to the Best Greek food I have had in 40 years. Big call but worth it indeed.
Vicki
Just like eating in my mums kitchen. It doesnt get more authentic than this guys. Fresh produce and home cooked food at its best. Its about time melbourne had authentic greek food. Thank you - will def be back :)

Hidden gem of oakleigh. Like led zeppelin said it's like a stair way to heaven! Authentic dishes. Tasty and a great variety! Felt likewe were eating in greece again. Highly recommend the prawn saganaki. Lovely service from staff! Friendly and warm.

Good time. Family reunion dinner held the other night. Found there style different than other Greek restaurants but the food was delicious the staff friendly and cheerful. The Rabbit stew was tender and tastty the grilled schnapper was well received as where the Lamb cutlers - no complaints here

Great Food!. Little place but great food. Service was generally good but it is a bit noisy. Worth a visit for some nice Greek tapas.
Brad Richardson
Awful. Poor on all levels. The faux marble effect painted on the stairs really said a lot about the 'authenticity' of this restaurant.

Starters - bread so hard, dry and thick cut that if thrown, would be considered a lethal weapon in a court of law. The cheese dip tasted freshly squeezed from those individual plastic tubes you place in school lunches.

Mains - meatballs similar to those from Coles meat section, sprinkled with some Masterfoods lamb spices and sat in diluted ketchup. The lamb souvlaki was so burnt that a normal restaurant's well done is their bleeding rare. Inedible.

If Jim's Greek Tavern's owners ever visited this place they wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry.

The Age, you should be ashamed for writing such a positive review in 2010 and repeating it a few weeks ago.
Paul Is Hungry
Not good. Look, they are nice people, but the night we went it was obvious from the start they were understaffed. We waited and waited and waited. We should have left, but that's when the bread and dips came out and we were starving. The only thing that was okay was the bread and dips, but why do you have to pay for them separately? Everything else was average at best. For those who don't believe me, all I can say is go there, but don't say I didn't warn you. We were given a discount card at the end of the night for our next meal there, but it will never be used. We were also overcharged, but honestly, we can't be bothered trying to get it back. All of this is a shame, because they are honest hard working people.
Irina
Thank you guys for a wonderful night.. My daughters and I last Friday went for dinner to Mezedakia restaurant. Unfortinately we don't have time to go out very often, so we wanted to go to a nice place, and have a good time. We chose Mezedakia. It's was our first visit to this place, and I can tell you that we definitely will be back.
All staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was amazing. The service was excellent.
Thank you to all staff for the wonderful night.
Helen
Hidden away and hard to find but nice tapas. A bit pricey and noisy as it was crowded but the service was quick and efficient.

After our last trip to Greece, we were missing the lovely freshly cooked Greek food et voila we found it at Mezedakia.. The dips, the zucchini balls, the salads & Uzo! Topped with excellent service. It brought back memories of Greece.

Yum yum. Some people shouldnt write reviews. like the one about waiting 3 hours. we ate there last night. the food was great and traditional. the only thing that could have been better was if there were more people in the restuatant to make a great atmousphere. we loved it though. will go back for sure.
Anastasia
Arrived at 7-30 pm food ordered. 3 hrs later still waiting. Food was uterly discusting. The sad part is we are greek . Will never ever go back.

Homely and authentic. The staff were very friendly and genuine. We were recommended some dishes which were wonderful. We ate saganaki, fried calamari, mushrooms, and zuchini balls. The saganaki and calamari were simple and good. The mushrooms were flavoursome and most enjoyable. The zuchini balls were incredible. Highly recommended.

Had a nice chat with the lady who owns the place and she spoke about how all the ingredients were imported from her own farm in Greece like olives, home made olive oil, oregano etc. She's been cooking for 35 years and it shows.

Great place, highly recommended.

Average Greek Food. The decor and ambiance of this restaurant are below standard considering the prices charged for small servings of fairly basic Greek food.
Beachie111
We walked out. Crazy busy night on the strip we booked a table 4 6 walked in with our wine not one other person in the place except for the staff arguing
was told we were not allowed to open our wine .....
and the way we were treated i got up and got our party of 6 to follow me out

so guys u let $250 walk out the door trying to lie about the laws of liquor...

we made the right decision

Love this place because the food is amazing. The roast lamb just crumbles, the calamari is tender, the greek salad is full of flavour and the dips are homely humble. My only concern is the serving sizes - you don't get very much but I guess it's quality not quantity and $5 for bread when you run out for dip is a bit steep. The team there are very welcoming and we will definitely be back.

Body and soul food. Palate snapping tapas (Saganaki and the mushrooms a must)Main courses numerous and mouth-watering. All presented in a home-style atmosphere. Service by Leah was both charming and engaging. Her description of food to come was accurate to the last flavoursome nuance. As for Maria, chef and owner, she has forgotten more about making you welcome than many restaurateurs will ever know. Hey do your taste buds a favour (or is it flavour). Norm
Burgers Of Melbourne
The worst Greek restaurant I have been to in oakleigh. Every course was dry and tasteless.

The waiter couldn't speak English and had no idea.

Quite expensive for terrible quality food.

Skip past this place when looking for Greek in the area!
Fiona Lazenby
Excellent food. 5 of us had dinner here tonight. We shared a variety of dishes all of which were excellent. There was an abundance of food. Excellent service and well priced menu. Small restaurant so bookings are a must. The only downside was each of the courses came out too close together.
Ian McDonald
Go Forth and Eat!. This is the most under-rated restaurant in the eastern suburbs. Excellent Greek cuisine and somewhat different to most. The staff are terrific and the owners look and act like they have just been dragged out of some cafe in Athens, so warm and friendly. Mum is a great cook as well. Sharing plates is the way to go here. Saturday nights can get a bit busy. You can park right behind the restaurant in the car park which is well hidden on the first floor.

Good food, nice place. Friendly waiters, good food, very reasonable prices. Had a table full of small plates and everything was delicious

This is the best Greek in Melbourne! Maria and the team deliver amazing food and friendly service. Slow cooked lamb with lemon potatoes are a must.
Serena
Worst service I have ever received at a restaurant! Our table of 4 was left waiting 30-40 minutes each time before another dish was sent out DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND DO NOT COME HERE!!!
Marissa Huszar
If you are looking for great authentic Greek food and fabulous service this is NOT the place for you!
Angela Lewis
Didn't like it. We went out for dinner for 2. They were not that busy but my dinner arrived juat after my husband had finished, i didnt even mind this but my dinner was cold. I sent it back and went home hungry. Won't be going back.
Julia
Such a disappointment. One of the worst Greek restaurants in Melbourne. The meat and potatos were boiled. The can's of coke were watered down! I highly do not recommend this place.
Jane Willis
Delicious. Great service, great vegetarian food. Enjoyed every morsel.

Delicious, amazing food - can't speak highly enough. We ordered set menu 2 plus saganaki... Our food came out quickly, the service was fantastic (the lady, i'm assuming the owner, even sat down with us and chatted whilst taking our order!)... Saganaki was to die for, fried mushrooms were the best i've ever tasted, capsicum and sausage was fantastic, hand made chips and lamb and chicken kebabs. Main of meatballs and rice. The most delicious, authentic Greek food i've had in Melbourne and couldn't recommend it more highly. The staff were fantastic, replenishing our water consistently and checking that we were happy with the meals and if we needed anything else. Highly recommend it to anyone!

APPALLING-RIP OFF. Dinner at Mezedakia, Oakleigh. Light and crisp whitebait AUD12, tender chicken and lamb souvlaki AUD16, prawns in saganaki, tomato and dill sauce AUD17, beef shin youvetsi AUD20, country style bread AUD5. The prawns were plump and fresh in a herby dill and tomato sauce studded with saganaki cheese. The kritharaki pasta were made extra silky with the rich gelatinous sauce of the beef shin. All very tasty, but we'd prefer less salt.

Very friendly staff and boss lady, and they have 2 or 3 baby chairs .
David Llewellyn
After the 30 minute drive from the city and the 30 minutes trying to find the front door the saganaki, fetta filled eggplant and greek god looking waiter made the journey through the car park and treasure hunt into the stairwell worth while. Stick to the tapas menu and a bottle of Pinot Noir (strangely under the white wine list) and you'll be back again.

Thank you Maria. Last night Maria opened her wonderful Restaurant to deliver fantastic food
to our group of eight DJ,s ladies. I can highly reccommend this place. Maria cooks the freshest food right on the spot......the Saganaki, Tender Calamari
beans, meatballs, will not disapoint, and there is so much more. Really great food.... and I love having the Retsina, having lived in Athens years ago its the best drink with Greek Food. I will be be back, and now have converted seven other returnees.
Thanks you Maria..........the Bakalava and short black just finished off a wonderful meal and an amazing night.

Some of the best Greek dishes in town!. I visited this lovely little restaurant with a friend for dinner and we left with full happy and satisfied bellies. The staff were so friendly and helpful, the service was super efficient and the food was fabulous and delicious. We shared the dips, saganaki, calamari and mushrooms and every single dish was cooked to perfection, tasty, satisfying and more-ish. We had an early dinner and by the time we had finished and were leaving the restaurant was filling up quickly so I suggest you book ahead when you can. I live out of town 2 hours away and cannot wait to visit Mezedakia again soon when I am visiting again, it will definitely be on the top of my agenda.

Celebrated our son's christening today and was over the moon about Mezedakia. Nothing was too difficult for Maria, Ioanna and staff. The food was amazing, service was fantastic and all our guests were left with full bellies, warm hearts and lots of smiles. A fantastic day! Ps. The mushrooms are a specialty for good reason!!

No BYO. This is a small unpretentious restaurant with good food to match. It would be much improved by allowing customers to BYO. The choice of wine is inadequate.

Booked for a family dinner in Fathers Day- lucky to get a spot! The occasion brought two families together for our engagement and the venue was perfect. Service excellent, staff patient and read our needs perfectly. Food was superb. Dips, breads, Lamb, moussaka all first rate along with the Greek beer (Mykos?). For locals and those outside the Oakleigh area/ this is a warm and tasty down-home dining experience. We'll be back.

Came in for a Father's day dinner and we couldn't have chosen a better place! The staff were friendly, attentive and treated us like family. When they forgot to bring out an entree, they gave us another entree, drinks and wouldn't let us leave without taking dessert with us, and didnt charge us for any of it! I've never had such a positive experience in a restaurant.

Traditional and delicious Greek food. Today I went to Mezedakia with a large group for lunch. We decided to order a number of items from the starters menu and two mains to share. As everything is made from scratch the meals come out slowly, which is perfect when you are eating a number of courses and need time to recover! The stand out dishes included, dolmades, saganaki and the grilled mushrooms (the flavour of these mushrooms was amazing!). Next time I could go without the calamari but otherwise everything was really good and we left after 3.5 hours feeling very full and satisfied. Don't forget to try the Greek beer!
Sophie K
I dined at Mezedakia last night, and i absolutely loved the food and the atmosphere, if you are after a greek traditional night with greek music and really great greek food, then this is the place to go...the service was great and the staff were friendly, and the greek traditional food was to die for, very authentic and delicious, i also enjoyed watching evryone having a good time and dancing to greek music.....my compiments go to Maria, who is the owner and a fantastic cook, thanks Mezedakia for a great night, i will definatley be coming back :)

Incredibly delicious rustic Greek food, warm and friendly staff, great service. Five star all around!

Wonderful home-made food!. Once you manage to find the place, the owner Maria will make you feel home and comfortable immediately. The grilled mushrooms topped with lemon juice was great! Husband really liked his roast goat. For me, a vegetarian, however, the main vegetable dish was a disappointment, but I guess Greek dishes are never known for their vegetable dishes except the Greek salad, right? Maria makes the best galaktoboureko, don't miss it!
Foodiefillie
My business partner and I took clients here for dinner recently and i can honetly say our experience was a positive one. For entree we had the calamari, prawn saganaki, whitebait, dips and the mushrooms (to die for!). We also shared mains but were abit concerned as there were some dietary requirements within the group. The owner/chef (i think her name is Maria?) came out and assured us everything was made fresh on the premises and kindly catered for our needs. We ended up having the home-cooke moussaka, the lamb (which she said was oven-baked), whole snapper (very fresh), the beef casserole with rice and the bean and vegetable stew (this was a vegetarian option). We had a good selection of inexpensive wines and the service was friendly and attentive. Family-orientated place and will be back again..was initially abit hard to find! Best direction is: level 1 on Portman st above the market. Great place within the Greek precinct. Well done

Like being in a Greek grandma's home. I ate here for the first time last night, and I was not disappointed. Along with three friends, we ate saganaki, eggplant, and stewed lima beans to start. The saganaki, which I am ordinarily not crazy about, was exceptional. It was golden and crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside. The eggplant tasted as eggplant should, and the lima beans cooked in tomato sauce were particularly good. I'd recommend them. We shared three mains from the Friday night menu: rabbit stew, meatballs with rice, and roast lamb. They were all very good, but the lamb in particular was wonderful. It was fork tender, and the potatoes that it came with were delicious, if a tiny bit salty. To finish, we shared homemade baklava and galactoboureko. Both were wonderful, and much better than the more-famous bakery/cafe just up the road.

The service was friendly. One of the waiters was not very fluent in English, but we managed anyway. I intend to come back.

If your after traditional Greek cooking then Mezedakia is the place. Maria owner and cook is lovely and happy to help with the menu she recommended the slow roasted goat with lemon potatoes it was delicious. A little hard to find but great to be away from the chaotic Eaton mall. Highly recommended we will go back!!!

Went for a birthday dinner tonight. Rude waiter, told we could not order the set menu. Got our entree before drinks!! Slow service. Told when the bill came that we could only pay by cash. Very, very disappointed. Won't go back or recommend to anyone.

Very very bad. I went today with my family I never seen something as bad as this the service was awful one guy only on floor on Sunday night cold as ice stupid as they come slow rude and more .. He left me with my kids nearly 25 min before we got menus .. Then 25 min later he did not take the order so we stood and left he was not even sorry . I guess he had 20 ppl there which is maybe too busy for him .when we told our experience to another Greece restaurant they were not chocked .. Don't waste ur time or money. The guy does not need it.... By the way I run a 300 seats restaurant andi never complain cause i understand but this guy was special i ve seen a lot of idiots in the trade never seen as bad

Warm, welcoming service & honest, authentic food. We ate a delicious Sunday lunch at Mezedakia today but we were very lucky. Before you go, ring up to check if Mezedakia are open for lunch as the genuinely lovely owner told us today that she's scaling back hours due to health. We were lucky that she had a big group coming in for a late lunch so she allowed us in. We shared a mixture of starters - yummy crusty bread, the best calamari we've ever had (**not** greasy and covered with thick icky breadcrumbs), sauted mushrooms and zucchini (served with a scrumptious garlic paste), lean and tasty meatballs in a basic tomato sauce and a prawn dish. Have to say the prawn dish didn't do much for either of us but in saying that, there's nothing wrong with it. All this washed down with a nice red, sounds of the greek language being spoken by the chef & his friends and we were pretty happy. Will definitely go back on a Thursday night for the slow cooked goat. Highly recommended for food cooked simply but with a whole lot of love. Divine.

Great food, friendly service. It was a little difficult to find (if on foot enter through door on Portman street, otherwise if driving you can drive into the parkade off Chester St and park right next to the restaurant's entrance)....
HOWEVER the atmosphere and food were wonderful! When we called to make a reservation we spoke to the loveliest Greek woman who was very accommodating and sweet. Upon arrival we were seated promptly at our reserved table and could see the cooking taking place in the kitchen from our table. The owner (woman we spoke to on phone) came and went through the menu with us, letting us know of any menu changes and what was very fresh.
We opted for one of the set menus for 2 - 1st came our choice of 2 dips, both of which were creamy and fresh, with fresh crispy bread. Next was the dolmades and a skillet of fried mushrooms - both were fresh and beautifully seasoned. Last up was the fantastic lamb served with juicy, melt in your mouth lemon potatoes. The lamb was amazing! It literally fell apart as you put your fork in it.
Highly recommend!

Nice Home Cooking. This place is a little hard to find as it provides two addresses for the same place as you are able to enter through the front and the rear. However when we called the restaurant, the lady was very helpful and even came down to assist in finding us :)
The service with in the restaurant was fantastic, they were very attentive and as someone new there provided us with information on what the foods were all about. The food came out reasonably quick, and was cooked fresh (as we could view the kitchen from out seats). If you're up for filling meals and taste home cooking... Highly recommended. If you're expecting presentation of the food... you'll forget about it once you've finished the meal :)

Best place for a long Sunday lunch. We enjoyed a really wonderful lunch at Mezedakia today. The owner gave us some wonderful menu recommendations, don't miss the mushrooms with oregano on the tapas menu! The pick of the mains were the roast lamb and lemon potatoes, and the beef braised in red wine. Desserts were also delicious, she put together a tasting plate of a few Greek treats for us. Nothing was too much trouble and she couldn't have been more accommodating of the 4 year old in our group, who was given things to colour with while we all enjoyed our lunch. Very hard to find, but worth the effort, we felt as though we were being personally taken care of by a lovely Greek nonna who couldn't do enough to please!

Extremely accommodating to allergy (gluten free) guests. Decent service. Food fantastic. Set menus are the pick every time. Good loud atmosphere.

When in Oakleigh... Beautiful flavours, warm & friendly staff.. Definitely the best Greek restaurant in the Oakleigh area. If you want yummy, authentic Greek flavours with a home cooked vibe about it, then Mezedakia is perfect. (Thanasis in Hughesdale is also a winner).
