Review Soban - Oakleigh

Christina Li
Nice service that does vegetarian food (kimchi and everything doesn't have anchovy). Serving size is a bit small for the price, although it is a good size if you don't have a big stomach.

Hadn't been here in a while. Seems to have changed management since last time I visited, but the bibimbap was still great.

Food was good (but not the best!) and prices were reasonable. You can park near the train station or oakleigh central if you can't find a parking lot along the road side.

Literally one of my favourite authentic Korean restaurants to go to, its beautifully hidden in the Oakleigh district amongst all the Greek food. The food is amazing, and staff are lovely. Definitely recommend checking the place out. The place is abit old and more for a causal setting but overall definitely a delight! 🙊
Lina
Great local Korean restaurant!! Highly recommend.

Great food. Very quick. We ordered the bento box and it was very tasty.

Visited a few times this trip to Melbourne. Very good food, the best ingredients. Had the best TakDooriTang I have ever had - and I live in Korea so this is no mean feat. Unobtrusive service. Not expensive. BYO OK.

Modest place still open for takeaway during lockdown II. Tasty options across a variety of Korean specialties. Hopefully we can visit soon rather than eating out of plastic containers brought home.

ordered their spicy rice cakes via uber eats and added cheese to it too! the sauce was very different to what i am used to, it was much sweeter and not that spicy at all. it came with super thicc ricecakes, sweet potato noodles and lots of fishcakes. so sad that an egg isn’t included though!
Muzz Sander
A little disappointed to order the spicy pork bibimbob to only find 2 x teaspoon portions of spicy pork underneath the fried egg and way too much rice on the bottom... really poor value considering the price...

Such yummy food, love the side dishes they bring out and also hot miso soup yummm. Price are reasonable though you will be satisfied when leaving

Honestly my favourite Korean restaurant in Melbourne. Nice and cosy, super friendly staffs, and delicious Korean traditional foods, you’ll love it if you love Korean food. I will definitely visit again to try out more foods there. Highly recommend!
Spinning Round Horse Kick
Super love the pork bone potato soup in this restaurant!!! I could can here all the way from Mordialloc to Oakleigh only for the soup! They also provide free soup for you, really sweet services.

Soban has been my go to korean restaurant in oakleigh for two years and still going.
I always order the beef bibibamp and the beef bulgolgi.
Everything is affordable that does not break your bank and the meat is so delicious.
The beef is nicely marinated, it gives it so much flavour and it is succulent.
My bibibamp is usually my lunch meal, it keeps me very full, the fried egg, beef and rice are a great combination together.

Ordered takeaway from an English speaking Korean. The food was ready to pick up in 10mins like he said but that where the positives end. Ordered Bean Seafood Tofu Stew and Bibimbob (rice w Spicy pork fried egg and salad). The stew came with some well cooked purple rice, Kim Chi and 1 serve of yummy chilli sauce. The stew contained only one small over cooked whole prawn in shell, 2 tiny pipis and a few squares if tofu for $17. The other dish had 2 teaspoons of pork. Wont be returning.

Happy to have found a new favourite Korean restaurant. We ordered a soft tofu stew (requested for less seafood) and vegetable japchae, both of which were delicious.

The soup stew arrived with a generous portion of tofu, accompanied with very nicely cooked (purple/grain) rice. We've always had white rice at other Korean restaurants so this unexpected serve was thoroughly welcomed and enjoyed. For sides, I've tried better sides elsewhere but this wasn't a deal breaker.

The japchae was GOOD. Not too oily; the perfect combination of noodles and a variety of vegetables.

Overall, I appreciated how the food (at least what we ordered) was less salty compared to other Korean dine-ins I've tried in Melbourne and would definitely return and try other dishes.

Also, good to know that they accept cards although on amounts above $35, but even better—we spotted ATMs just meters away.

- C.

Taste like mom makes;
Although no pictures but must try jjim dak & gang dwen jang ssam bap! Bests :) Pork cutlet and soups, side dishes are nice too.

We've order the lunch menu which is super over priced compare to the portion. Will never go again for the second time.

It is super disappointing and I think it's one of the most disappointing Korean meal for me in Melbourne.

The staff has told me they have changed the management team from April 2017. OMG, their dishes taste like SHIT! I've been to most of the Korean restaurants in Melbourne. I can promise you this is the worst I've ever tried! Their soup has no flavor and their side dish taste horrible! Will never return! Oh, they are cash only! Should have reported to the ATO.

Soban is an authentic Korean restaurant located next to the oakleigh station. The restaurant is small but the service is outstanding. The waitress spoke good English and was able to modify my dishes to meet my diet requirement. The side dishes were tasty and came in generous amount. The spicy tofu stew was very flavourful and worth for a try if you like spicy soup. This place only takes cash.

Went for lunch with my husband today, overall experience was quite good. The lady was nice and considerate, even asked my husband if he needs knife and fork, not much Korean restaurant asked for that before. Pork Kimchi pancake was a highlight and we think it's the best we ever have. I ordered seafood tofu stew, it was alright but little bit too spicy for me. The side dishes are quite unique and tasted very fresh and yummy. Will come back again!
Rachael
Lunch bimbimbob special for 11 dollars. Decent size with a kimchi side dish (not a fan of the kimchi, it tasted odd to me). Definitely pedestrian quality, although the staff seemed very sweet and fast on service. Seated straight away.

We went there on valentine night, Average food but really nice service. The place is quite small and dark atmosphere. Overall, we had a nice experience there

Soban is definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. Standard portions at standard prices for delicious flavours that are above standard. Staff are efficient and friendly. Think it might be time for another visit soon.

A friend and I came for a late lunch last week - food was delivered quickly and tasted good - nothing extraordinary but very homely. Decent quantity for a decent sized meal, but there are plenty of other options around so won't be returning too quickly.

Ten of us just had dinner at Soban and none of us had been here before. What a gem, great Korean food cooked by a beautiful lady who clearly puts all her passion and Korean tradition in her dishes. We met her and you can see her passion and pleasure in our delight over the dishes we had. Her husband and daughter served with a great smile and we're a pleasure to speak to.
Back to the food, a place I would recommend with traditional Korean delights. Absolutely fantastic food, we all loved it. Highly recommended.
My wife and I will definitely be back.

I really like this great little lunch spot. excellent food, 30 sec walk north from oakleigh station. I like the seafood soup with soft tofu. I have been on a number of occasions and tried a variety of dishes and all are excellent. They only accept cash, no cards.

Had dinner here last night with the missus and it was delicious. It tasted like home cooked Korean food at mum's house, and the owners are so nice and make the place feel very homely. The seafood pancake was delicious and very crispy on the outside and soft and chewey on the inside. We over ordered a bit with the galbi jjim and kimchi jjim but I'm glad we had both because they were all so delicious. I'm glad I live nearby so I can go there whenever I feel like home cooked style Korean food.

Owner of this resturant has been changed recently. I tried kimchi fried rice and my wife tried.l bibimbab after the change and she wasnt happy with new taste. But my fried rice was good.

I've been going to Soban for a couple of years and it's a great place to pick up some kimbap. Not many Korean restaurants serve it and I was delighted when I saw it on the menu. Come for the kimbap only in my opinion.

It is now with new management . Went for opening trial. Every single bite tasted like what my mom used to cook everyday .
They are not trying to change its originality of Korean but taking it back to old fashioned. Real home food. Thanks for trying not to show off.

Me and my partner were so hungry and thought of trying some new cafe in our area. They have mentioned that they close at 9:30 p.m and we reached there around 8:45p.m. The lady working there was so rude and impolite. When we entered there, the lady was like we are closed and you can't come in.!!! Man, it was just 8:45 and the way you talk, seriously I am not coming back and will not recommend anyone to go there. Shittest place and shittest customer service. At the end, we went back to our favourite korean cafe Hankki in Carnegie.
The food here is very tasty and the prices are really reasonable. The menu is good and vegetarian friendly. Not many tables available, so booking is advisable. It is cash only too. I can recommend it here.

Really great place. Prices are very reasonable, service is very friendly and the food is perfect. Certainly one of the best Korean restaurants in Melbourne.

Annabelle Woo
one of the best, affordable Korean. lady that served us was so friendly and the food was delicious without having to wait for ages. highly recommend

Lunch time. Can't hide the fact they are one of the beat Koreans you can find in South East suburbs. Melbourne is so blessed to have Soban. A little pricey on the side, but it is definitely worth the cost. My favorite is the beef ribs on soup (Galbi something...). Just the korean beef ribs stirfry a little tough to chew but flavorsome wise is very delicious! Needed 2 bowls of rice to get satisfied!

Nice small Korean restaurant! I always go back, mostly for lunch! Overall, the food is really good! Large portions of food in a really good price!
JW
Nice and tasty Korean lunch box that I've come back for a couple of times now.

Have tried the beef and spicy pork bulgolgi and both were great with your standard kim chi, marinated tofu, miso soup, and salad sides... Plus some gyoza. Nice. And at a lunch special price of $10.50 you can't go wrong with that.

Will return.

Great fresh Korean food. Always so tasty and made to order. It nice for the variety in Oakleigh. Their lunch specials are well priced! Give korean a go!

Sometimes I resist the temptation to eat out, but more often than not, laziness trumps any sort of self-discipline. Last Friday night's eating adventure involved an impromptu visit to Soban, Oakleigh along with hubby and my parents. None of us had ever been before, and I thought it seemed like a great time to try someplace new. We decided to get four main dishes to share, and the first one was good old samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup). It was the perfect, hearty indulgence on that rainy night. The broth was rich and nutritious and there was plenty of soft meat to go around.

Yummy. BEST FOOD EVER!!!!!! coming back here asap.

When it says modern, take this seriously as the food has some western twists like capsicum and cauliflower in some of their dishes. Was enjoyable though, but not amazing.
Elaine Kam
One of the cheapest Korean places around Melbourne I've seen so far! Friendly and swift service and food comes out in a good timely manner on a Friday evening. Ordered the sizzling pork bulgogi and it came with 4 sides and rice. Portions were surprisingly good for the price. Delicious! Will definitely go again.

TASTY!. Very fresh ingredients and very tasty food. BBQ chili prawn is heaven! The prices are very reasonable and the portions are big. The service is not great, but not worse than what you would expect from cheap Asian eateries.
Derikandjess
Great & easy. Great little restaurant. Always feel satisfied. Good flavours and at a reasonable price.

Great food great price, hard to find cheap korean food in this area, $13 for bulgogi beef with side dish, rice, and soup. Taste good and quick, might be a bit slow at dinner but its truly hard to find such a good place. Have been here frequently, definitely worth it.
Briedy
Yummy and Quick. Love this place for a quick after work dinner. Often meet my husband when he gets off the train for a quick, tasty, healthy dinner. Always good, always filling. The Bibimbap Hotpot is my fave!
Omocha
Usually like their food but have been shortchanged on quantities multiple times when I've ordered to take away. They have on one occasion when a friend made a similar complaint, admitted they gave her a smaller quantity because she was female and she "wouldn't eat that much". So then maybe you should charge her differently then since you seem it appropriate to base quantity on gender!
Daffy
Good food. Go there often for their Kimchi soup. Very tasty and full of flavor. The spring rolls are surprisingly good. Nice and cozy environment.

Our favorite. Great food, the kids love it too, the favourite is teriyaki chicken and I love the bento boxes and lots of other good korean stuff.
8ites Our Bites On Food
The first main ordered was the Pork (^) Bulgogi ($13.00) sizzling BBQ pork marinated in spicy sauce and vegetables. This dish was served with steamed rice, 4 side dishes and soup. The side dishes were Kimchi, bean shoots, fish slices and brocolli.
