Review Pie In The Sky - Olinda

Pamela Alex
Pre covid I often came here with my family and enjoyed the pies but disappointed to say they are not what they used to be. We ordered 3 pies : cheese, chicken & mushroom, cheese bacon onion. They were pretty bland in flavour only the chicken pie you could really taste all ingredients inside. They came out of the pie-Warmer and we’re just ridiculously too hot on the hands and mouth. We Waited 5 minutes and they were still extremely hot inside. Unfortunately do not think I would return again. Also it was only open for take away and toilets not open to customers

We were so hungry, we didn’t take any photos of the pies. But hey, they were deliciousooo. The place is cute. The bathroom was very clean and had cute notes on the wall.

Great selection of pies and pasties, have hot food ie chips ,onion rings ,coffee tea hot chocolate etc.Dine inside or out ,no table service ,just order and it's brought out to you.

Whilst I understand everyone is struggling from staff shortages, the change to takeaway only is very disappointing. Gone is the pie floater and it now feels like a pit-stop. Everything in paper and overcooked pie. I’ve been bringing friends and family visiting from overseas for years. Such a disappointment.

Amazing the pies. There are so many different varieties. My favourite is the rendang chicken. It's full of flavour and delicious. I always need to have one there (outside) and an extra one for takeaway! Great service too. Looking forward to when they open again for dine in.

Oh a very sad day indeed. We have lots of wonderful fond times of Pie in the sky but sadly not today. We visited today at lunchtime. Firstly no table service. They now call your name out and if you're lucky they plonk it down on the table. No plates... hot chips were in a take away box, coffees and milkshakes in takeaway cups, scones were in a take away box. Disposable cutlery. I had to cut open our scones on a napkin to spread jam and cream on them. What on earth has happened to this place??? It used to be such a beautiful little place with plates and silver cutlery provided. We walked away very disappointed and probably won't go back.

Really friendly staff that were easy to chat to. We were near closing so nothing available from the coffee machine and a few of us had to wait for some pies to be reheated but well worth the wait. I really enjoyed my vegetable pastie, it was quite filling and really hits the spot after you finish a trail nearby. The dessert was quite sweet so happy I went with apple crumble instead of the purportedly much sweeter cheesecake. PLUS free tomato sauce packets! Amazing! There is seating outside if you are unable to dine in and ample paid parking at the back ($2/hour, from memory).

No doubt pies are great and have really good taste but staff is unbelievably slow and lack the number on a busy day. To get two pies you need to wait at least an hour on a weekend lunch time. Coffee staff was chit chatting for 20 mins and didn't bother to prepare my coffee. Not impressed.

We have been coming here for years and years. While the pies, chips and gravy are really nice, it has gone from a homey, old style service, crackling fire kind of place to a chaotic tourist bus stop feel where people grab your chair to sit with companions. Table service is a thing of the past. Just queue up and wait for the food like a cheap cafe. It's such a shame! Pie took 24 minutes to arrive, coffee took 16 minutes and there was nothing to drink by the time the food came. The floor had food on it. Regrettably, I think that's it for us.
Kimberley Hanson
The pies were delicious, especially the pastry. We also enjoyed the chips and milkshake. Very impressed with the staff. It is incredibly busy but they manage to keep things moving and accommodate people without making you feel rushed. However we had to wait over 30 minutes (literally as I was able to time it) for our food. As stated above we got pies with a shared bowl of chips. This should not be hard to prepare. When it is so busy that you have a line out the door you think food would be ready faster than 30 minutes. But I will give kudos to the staff again because the hostess noticed and checked in with us. As soon as she went to enquire our food was brought out to us. I would go back but possibly stick with takeaway pies and/or be prepared for the crowds and wait.

Pastry under done in my Cornish pastie. Was almost raw in some places. Pie was ok. Wouldn't call it award winning though. Friendly staff.
Wawan Saputra
overhyped. tried the gold medal pie and it failed to impress - makes one wonder if it’s the standard has dropped or the winnig criteria is so low. on the +ve side, the baked potato tastes much better than the pie, with generous dollop of sour cream and tasty coleslaw.
Dodi Lawson
Quick service even though the line was out the door. Very yummy scones. Only small downside was the bowl of chips were a bit small.
Edgar Yung
Cost cutting. customers need to order at counter. No waiter or waitress comes to order at table. A bit disappointed.
Kaye Maree
While the pie itself was ok enough, the PRICE!!??? Wow! How does a pie and a coke cost $13!!?? Nothing about any of it warranted that kind of price

My wife and I used to enjoy this place, the pies were great and my favorite was always Tandoori chicken floater. Sadly this is no longer true. We visited for the first time in over a year this weekend. My tandoori chicken pie was dry and the chicken stringy, the pea & ham soup used to be thick and tasty, now not so, not as thick and the addition of frozen baby peas did not help. It would seem that the massive increase in Chinese tourism to Olinda may be helping its economy but its standards are slipping dramatically. Pie in the Sky seems to be going the same way as The Cuckoo restaurant which has also slipped greatly in quality. I won’t be visiting either in the foreseeable future.
Rod Freame
The pies were delicious but we won't be eating in again the wait time was long and the price was steep. Cheaper and quicker to take away and enjoy the views of the region from a park.

It's a must to go each time I visit Melbourne either with my family or my partner! No matter how packed our schedules are, we will not fail to head over for some pies! Awesome! 🖒🖒🖒🖒!

Had the Devonshire tea. The Earl Grey was very nice but the scones needed more butter in the recipe. They were too much like bread. The wait staff were excellent
Jason Spiteri
Prices are over the top service is average sitting down in here waiting for a dessert I ordered mud cake and 2 scoops of ice cream cost me $14 fuck me 1time visiting and last time for sure

I was most upset that they didn't have croquettes as that was the main reason I went there. If you can't get the croquettes then please take them off the menu and you won't have disappointed customers. Also what happened to the so called gourmet salad? The salad was out of a packet with a few cubes of beetroot and 1 very thinly piece of sliced cucumber. As for the dressing what dressing? Mine had no dressing on it. Used to love coming to Pie in the Sky, but if someone asked me what I thought I would give them a big fat don't go there!!!!

The floater and tandoori chicken pie was delicious. Topped it off with the orange almond cake. Cozy ambience and friendly staff. It was a Lovely experience!

Delicious pies quite close to Grandma's. Amist the beautiful surroundings of Olinda. Good thick and creamy milkshakes. Hard to find another establishment quite similar to this. Pray that they keep up the standards.

It an amazing restaurant and food served are delicious and fresh!! I will surely come back for more!

A famous pie shop in the Dandenong’s which has won multiple awards 🥇 Would always drop by this place when I take a trip to the Dandenong’s 🌳 <br/><br/>Personally only a certain handful of pies are good, while the rest are rather mediocre. Probably their award winning pies are worth the try as I recalled trying a couple of non-award winning ones as well & clearly it did not impress me 🥧 <br/><br/>🗓 Visited in December 2017 & January 2019
Gee
Apparently this bakery has won awards. It was really hectic and busy with tourists when we went. Ended up with takeaway and had a plain pie, bacon and onion pie, and a pecan tart. The plain pie was good but not ideal for eating in a paper bag a la takeaway. They don’t charge for sauce which is how it should be. The bacon and onion pie was nice too, although I couldn’t taste any bacon. And finally the pecan tart was good but a bit messy!

I went here as I heard this place apparently had great pies. Indeed, their pies are prominently advertised as ‘award winning’. Unfortunately, they’re nothing to rave about. They’re not even that good. This place is a tourist trap.<br/><br/>We ordered a beef and mushroom pie, and the ‘gourmet’ beef burgundy pie, with mashed potatoes, gravy and peas. The pies were average - not bad, per se, but not good. I felt they were a step above ‘four n’ twenty’ pies, frankly. Certainly not worth the expensive prices.<br/><br/>Despite this, we thought we’d try dessert, as they sounded delectable and we were told they were freshly baked. We ordered the blueberry and almond pie. Unfortunately, this was another significant disappointment. It was barely a pie! It was more like a blueberry and almond muffin in the shape of a pie. It was very doughy and made with heaps of almond meal. If you’re expecting something like a cherry pie, but made with blueberries, you’ll be way off the mark.<br/><br/>We left feeling slightly ripped off, given the prices and the quality.<br/><br/>Be prepared to wait in line for a long time too - the first time, to even get a table, the second time to place an order. Nothing here is worth the wait or the money.
Bleeckersny
The beef curry pie was absolutely delicious - was also served with a generous serve of chips. We then shared a beautiful rhubarb pie for dessert which was served with cream. It was warm and just heavenly!<br/>Service was good; the only let down was the long line for a table!
JOELLE
Paid a visit during a trip to dandenong. The place was quite spacious with amazing pie smells.<br/><br/>Tried the tandoori pie and it was pretty good, the pie itself was flaky and warm and not too oily while the chicken was quite flavourful.<br/><br/>The cauliflower pie was pretty good, but probably lacking flavour as it was quite bland.<br/><br/>The price was pretty good too.<br/><br/>Overall a good eating option when in the area<br/><br/>( follow for more! 💓)<br/><br/>xx,joelle.

Ordered Beef Burgundy and Korma pie, both delicious but left us feeling peckish. They should be a bit bigger especially for the price. Yummy salad on the side and great coffee!
Brett Armistead
Burgundy pie and curry pie were delicious but a little dry. The pastry was buttery soft and flaky, not crusty like four n twenties. Curry was sufficiently spicy.

I’m sure if the local stray cats would love this place, however I’m not one to eat cat food. Probably the worst experience at a pie bakery ever. Not just the horrible food but also the staff are like zombies with zero personality. Someone should let them know that a smile is free. Overall Rating: 1
Tantalizeme
Possibly the best crispy and flaky pie crust I’ve ever had plus without the greasy after taste! It’s my first visit and ordered the tandoori chicken one flavour is good, could be creamier but the chicken pieces are super tender like they were cooked in sous vide!
Deflykira
Really love their chicken tandoori meat pie! I tried their devonshire tea but the scones tasted odd. Baked potato tasted okay. Price is within reasonable range.
Zhen
Ordered a mushroom and kidney $6 for takeaway during the public holiday and it was some hearty pies. Favourite part were the buttery crispy crusts.
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: great pies! <br/><br/>🍩Lizzie enjoyed: they have many flavours and they’re all very delicious - can’t go wrong with the shepherds pie. <br/><br/>🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: very far away but worth the trip!<br/><br/>🥇Lizzie rates overall: great place for pies and a bite if you’re close to dandenong ranges!
Chubbylover86
Can’t fault the pies they are delicious and crispy. We always get the jam with fresh scones which never disappoint. Great place to visit whenever in the area.

Located in a quite village of Olinda. Not only the staff are friendly and accommodating but the pies are to die for.<br/>They serve pretty much every kind of pie meat with vegetarian options.
Phlebebe
I can here with a friend visiting from Japan. He was really keen on having a good pie and he said it was fantastic. <br/>I’m not a pie eater, so I ordered the Calamari Salad. It was a bit small for $17, considering I had one a week ago which was 1.5 x bigger. <br/>The calamari is not fresh, but I didn’t expect it to be. If you come here, have a pie - they’re the award winners.
Nay Nay
Some damn good pie's here. There are heaps of unique pir flavours with a lot of award winning pies. The pastry is nice and flaky which makes the pie
Lemon
Take away a few pies. The service wasn’t nice and the pies were not nice too. I was told that here is the famous place in this area but after I tried their pie, not sure why it’s so famous. Not too bad.. but just ordinary pie.
Jingwen Hu
Wonderful atmosphere! I love this retro style even their service is not very kind haha. Honestly speaking, do not order the coffee. Pie is good I love its crisp crust(even not everyone like it). But pie floater is....not good, and meaningless potato, hate it sooooo much. Salad is good but veg pie is too dry, I love meat pie is great!
Yz
The service was superb and quick. We ordered two pies, a burgundy beef pie and a tandoori chicken pie. Both of it was good but I think the multiple gold medal on the tandoori chicken over hyped my expectations. Certainly have a stop by and try it for yourself!<br/>

I’ve visited Pie in the Sky about 3 times in the past 3 years (the most recent time being early this year) and it basically has been the same experience for all three times. I mean - it's made me sign up to Zomato just to give it a review - that probably says a lot. Albeit a belated review haha.Pie in the Sky is an excellent example of poor expectation management. The proclamations of the pies being multi-award winning may bring in many customers, but the food and service here transforms them and pumps out dissatisfied customers. Given most customers are tourists, the lack of repeat customers doesn’t hurt them financially as much as you would expect, but for Melbourne city type locals like me, this place is an “avoid” zone if one can help it. The sad thing is there’s not many other options in this area. These elements probably explain its longevity given the other points I have made.<br/><br/>The Pies themselves are extremely bland and lack flavour. Many of the “award winning” pies are beef mince pies lacking any flavour, and with meat ground so finely you might as well be eating a textured gravy. In contrast the pies at Pie Face seem to be restaurant quality compared to the Pie in the Sky. Pie Face pies have a lot of flavour and, whilst small, are jammed with big, hearty chunks of quality meat. The sides that come with the Pies are largely the same mediocre, bland quality. That being said, the pies that are "chunky meat" have good quality beef in them. Well done for that at least.<br/><br/>The issues go beyond this. The service is average to poor. It’s not that the waiters and waitresses don’t try, but they all appear to be teenagers who are ill equipped at knowing how to prioritise, manage expectations, communicate effectively, maintain a smile under pressure and not run around like either headless chickens or look totally indifferent to customers waiting ages for food. I’m not saying they are bad people – but being a waiter/waitress includes a practiced art of seeming to care. The staff don’t have this. It feels like you’re being served by the owner’s kids or something because they’ve been forced to by mum and dad. And that’s the other big issue with this place – the wait. Be prepared to wait, and wait, and wait. Waiting for a table, waiting to order, waiting to be served, waiting to get anything. A lot of wait - only for mediocre slop to come out. It doesn’t help keep your anger checked when the waiters/waitresses don’t look like they really care that you're waiting. It’s not really their fault though – but the fault of management and a lack of supervision. <br/><br/>What this place is, is effectively like a food truck at a sporting event or concert. You know the food is going to be rubbish. You know you will overpay for it. But the problem is there’s hardly anything else in the area so you have no choice but to pay up, eat your slop, leave feeling a bit ripped off – and come back again next time you’re in the area. What leaves the sour taste in the mouth though is all the proclamations of being award winning. Nobody really complains about the food at the footy being poor quality and a rip off – because that’s what is expected. Here, it isn’t – and that’s what makes this place a disappointment.<br/><br/>Someone, somewhere is really taking the mickey with this place. <br/>3 stars from an objective perspective. 1 star from an emotional perspective. Would I go back? Yes - due to lack of choice.
Eating Away Melbourne
Always come here for a take away pie when going to the dandenong ranges. The only complain is when you go in the arvo there aren't that many choices left if you want the cooked hot pie.. Had the chicken mushroom one and it was so yummy! The tandoori chicken one wasn't that impressed..
Isabelle-
I’ve been to this place a few times now and the Beef Burgundy pie never fails me! No wonder it’s a gold medal winner. <br/>The chips came out bland with no salt added at all, but they do provide a salt shaker on the table. <br/>Be sure to expect long lines, for both takeaway and dine in on the weekend, so make sure you get there before or after the lunch rush.
Sesame Eats
The pies here were pretty decent. There’s a good selection of gourmet pies to choose from and it’s hard to go wrong with any of them. The let down here were the sides. The chips were very bland and the mash potatoes were dry and flavourless; there’s no option for gravy either which would’ve helped with the blandness of the mash. <br/><br/>Apart from the food, the service was decent and the atmosphere was quite rustic. I would only recommend this place for the pies as a small lunch.
Good Eats
This is where pies go to die. I'm pretty sure they just print their own awards because this place is trash. There is an open sewage vent that runs next to the drive way and right next to the out door seating and it stunk. The tables were all dirty and the chips that come with the pies are bland and cold. It's expensive and really really bad.

Ambience : 2/5. Overcrowded. Busy and chaotic. <br/>Food : 2/5. Meat was dry and tough. Pastry was dense and not warm enough. Overall the pie was bland. <br/>Service : 1/5. Terrible. Took servers ages to take our orders. They are not very attentive to diners’ need. <br/>It was not a pleasant experience. This place was overrated to my liking. Once is enough. Don’t think I’ll be back anytime soon.

Very popular bakeries due to the award of the best advertising now. Melbourne and Zomato gourmet fun, please check the award when they got. It was history 2008 not now but they advertised like they've just got.<br/><br/>5 🌟 for wonderful exaggerated advertisement<br/>0🌟 for car parking fee (I parked elsewhere), tasteless cold meat pies and too much fennel seeds taste of vegetables pies, staff cold attitude outside counter and burnt espresso.<br/><br/>I would rather drive miles away to Mansfield or elsewhere. Great to find cute stationary & toy shops near by this place.

Friday 10th August 2018 at 3pm. <br/>Not won over here. The pies were dry and the potatoes appeared as if sitting around all day. Disappointed after all the listed awards.

We attended today with friends who have just moved into the area and it was closed at 9:45 am on Sunday when it should have been open at 9:30am. <br/>Doors locked, ‘sorry we are closed’ sign on the door and staff in the kitchen. We went over the road to Dudley’s and had one of the best and cheapest eating experience ever. I highly recommend you give Dudley’s a go first. <br/>
Jean
Nice pies with a lot of genuine chunky meat bits inside and lovely pastry. I don't recommend eating in though as prices are a lot higher.  To eat in a gourmet pie with peas and mash cost $17.50.  A takeaway hot gourmet pie costs only $5.50.  Coffee tastes burnt too.<br/> <br/><br/>What agreed council.  The car park behind Pie in the Sky was always free.  Now it cost $2 per hour. I will not be returning to Olinda again.
Nakul Gandotra
Best tandoori chicken pie I have ever eaten. They have really nice collection of gourmet pies and a very nice atmosphere to enjoy it in. Will visit again to try the rest of award winning pies.

Been here a few times while on a day trip to Mt Dandenong, both to eat in and to take away. Prefer to take away for a quick bite on the go. We especially enjoyed the beef rendang flavour and still think about it every now and then. Worth checking out when you’re in the area
Dario Casale
The famous pie in the sky lived up to the hype! Beautiful traditional and gourmet pies set with a fantastic ambience! Definitely try it out if you’re in Olinda!
Blueberrypie
Delicious hearty pies in a warm environment filled with lots of wooden furniture. we had the meat and cheese pie; beef burgendy; beef Guinness; and tandori. All were creamy and hot and loved the short pastry. A lot of places use flaky pastry these days but i love these old school pies with a modern twist (e.g. the tandori flavoured pie). It's a long wait time now that everyone knows about it but you'll be greeted by friendly staff. Prices a bit steep in my opinion but worth it. Will have to try desserts next time.
Egg Is Okay
I like how before you write your review you’re reminded to be ‘polite and friendly’. Maybe that should be told to the staff at Pie in the sky. They don’t seem to understand what customer service is.<br/><br/>Sure the pie was good. Not the best I’ve had. But I would not step foot in this place again due to the rude staff. Like others have said before me, the two lines were confusing. No one was there managing the people coming in. I was accused of pushing in the line when I asked for a table. Even the customers behind me said I was in front of them. I even asked the staff member if I should go back to the end of the line even though I knew I didn’t push in. Then I was asked where I wanted to be seated. Inside or outside. I just said wherever is available because I don’t want to have to wait any longer. And the answer I got back was ‘that’s not what I asked’. Wow I really didn’t know what to say. I felt like walking out straight away. <br/><br/>Prices were high as well. One pie, a pie float and a dessert was close to $40. No drinks. They didn’t even bring us table water. The food was hard to swallow after being treated so horribly. <br/>
John Hong
Worst customer service I have experienced at any establishment. Would not recommend anyone from visiting this place. The girl serving us was so rude and condescending.
Vivian
The pies here use to be amazing!  I came back recently and it has gone down in quality, not only were they dry and over priced, the wait time to get one is extremely long. Not worth it
One Piece Left
On one sunny afternoon we decided to make the trip to the Dandenong Ranges to check out Pie in the Sky. We’ve known about this place for a while and know that it’s been featured on TV shows as a spot to visit, famous for their hand-made pies made daily. Upon arrival and entering we could see that it was an obvious tourist drop in place as there were plenty of tourists there either eating in or buying a pie for takeaway. The eatery itself was quite spacious with plenty of wooden tables and chairs.

Takeaway: pies & cakes for 4 people under $40. Extra cost to eat in, + mixed service reviews, so took lunch down the road to Grants Picnic Ground. Pie pastry was really good & flaky. Beef rendang had nice spice hit, really big chunks of beef, maybe flavoor would penetrate more if smaller. Guinness pie & meat n cheese also enjoyed. Good quality, will be back. Sweets were just ok. Lemon tart was not sour, had big bits of zest, but shortcrust was nice. Apple & rhubarb crumble had gorgeous crumble but very little rhubarb. Maybe we got an odd piece, as the ones on display had more.
Pia Van Koeverden
Pies were ok but nothing to write home about.  The low score is for terrible service.  Takeaway service was incredibly slow (around 45 minute wait for two pies) and the front of the restaurant was totally chaotic, the staff there really didn't seem to have any idea what was going on (when we ordered, we were told a roughly 10 minute wait.  If your staff would have been honest about the 45 minute wait we would have chosen to go elsewhere).  Two separate lines to pay for take away vs. dine in but not really clear and a lot of customers seemed to be confused about where to line up.  No where really convenient to wait for take away orders, just had to stand around in the queuing area for 30 mins with people constantly asking if we were in line to order.  The people who ordered take away orders just before us were offered a free dessert/cake as compensation for having to wait so long, but we waited even longer than them and were offered nothing.<br/><br/>Seems like the only "Pie in the sky" was our hopes of having a takeaway lunch in less than 45 minutes.  Definitely not worth the wait, nor the price for a fairly standard pie which would compare to any other bakery.

I’ve heard about this place for years but have never tried it until recently due to how far it is from where I live. My partner and I decided to make the almost 100km journey to try their pies out and oh how we were disappointed!!!!! I ordered the Beef Burgundy pie and it was the driest pie I’d ever tasted. My partner’s beef & Guinness pie was better but still not worth the price nor the drive there. The most disappointing of all was the terrible service we got; the servers didn’t know the menu, nor did they care enough to find out. Our waitress was rude and had a foul attitude showing she couldn’t care less about customer experience. We were served sides we didn’t want, and when asked if they came with the pie or if we were charged extra for them the waitress basically said she didn’t know and walked off. I was planning on trying their Apple pie, but after the crappy service we couldn’t stand to stay any longer. Will not be back.

This place has a range of pies to choose from; quite hard to pick as there were a few that looked tasty but have decided to go with the ‘tandoori chicken and spinach’ which was from their gourmet pie section of the menu. The pie was served on a plate and was garnished with a few strands of carrot and micro herbs which I thought was unnecessary and unappealing. However what’s important is the pie itself.<br/><br/>The top pastry of the pie was flaky and crisp and the remaining pastry was firm with a thin crusty layer but was not dry and hard; indicating that it was not over baked. Also the bottom of the pie was not soggy. The filling had several decently sized chicken breast pieces completely marinated with their tandoori sauce and bits and pieces of baby spinach. The chicken was tender and paired well with the creamy tandoori sauce which has a nice savoury spice to it; no heat though which was expected. Finally the flavour of the baby spinach was overpowered by the tandoori sauce but otherwise it was good to have some healthy greens in the pie.<br/><br/>Overall the pie was tasty; flavour and quality wise it was satisfactory and there is a great selection of pies to choose from but the price is on the higher end.

Never a good business practice or strategy to charge a customer extra money to dine inside your establishment. You are charging a customer to sit in your restaurant? It’s not customer centric and it while the pies were average, the experience left a bad taste in our mouths. I ordered a $5.50 pie to go while my friend paid $7.90 for hers just to sit. I got mine immediately, while she waited 20 min for hers. Huh? Also, the restaurant was empty, which surely doesn’t make it appealing to the passerbyer. So silly, the owner clearly doesn’t have a degree in business or marketing.
Kasandra Marie Caldwell
Simple, yet tasty. I had the beef and mushroom pie. It was perfect. The restaurant was a cabin vibe, which is perfect for the location. Will defiantly be back when I'm back in Olinda.
Hangry
Not great, didnt have any hot pies ready for take away then forgot about my order. Had the steak and mushroom pie, looked like canned mushrooms. I wouldve prefered a stale 7 day old Servo pie.
Whenfoodiesmeet
What's better than have a pie at the National Rhododendron Gardens of Dandenong? Having 2 pies 😀😀 Here we have the award winning beef burgundy and korma chicken pies with lovely flakey golden pastry and flavour packed meaty fillings! Definitely recommend a visit to the famous @pieintheskyolinda to get your hands on these beauties this Australian summer!
Joenne Chau
When a restaurant claims they have the best pies and has awards for it you’d expect it to be pretty damn good, we waited 30mins for three pies (korma chicken ($7.95) , beef rendang ($7.95) and a meat pie with cheese w/ peas mash and gravy) ($16.90) no apology was given for the delay of food when customers after us had been given their meals and once the food arrived we received pies that were most certainly not the ‘best’ and pies not your money’s worth accompanied with watery bland potato mash and gravy that tastes like it made from powder packets. Highly disappointed and I would recommend a 7/11 meat pie than this restaurant with the “best pies”.

With a beautiful elevated cottage style building conveniently located on the main street of Olinda. Good car parking out back (that does fill up on the weekends) you are well set up well for a good quality lunch & an experience in the Dandenong Ranges.<br/><br/>Pie in the Sky is an experience not to be rushed. Yes, the service is slow at times. Yes, they could be more organised but to be honest, what is the rush. Just relax, slow down just a little & you’ll get the best out of the Ranges.<br/><br/>Beef Burgundy great. Beef Guinness is the stand out for me. Chunky slow cooked meat in a thick Guinness gravy pie – perfect. Though my wife would certainly argue that the Creamy Chicken & Mushroom pie should be the header or this review. But this is not her review – Beef Guinness & Chips. Forget the salad ….& start with a coffee because Pie in the Sky is indeed a popular spot here & certainly worth the visit ;)

Went here on a day trip to the National Rhododendron Gardens. Such a beautiful location up in the hills and looks like a super nice cafe with several mini floors. The decor was really cute and looks like a really fancy bakery. Pies were fantastic with me getting the chicken korma and my girlfriend getting the beef guinness pie. We both had mash and peas with it. The pies were delicious and definitely among the best pies I have had. The were reasonably priced with the meal and it was very filling. The mash potato was very creamy and lived up to the high standards of the pie. Would highly recommend for anybody around Olinda for the day.

Pie in the Sky is literally the only reason why I reach the top of Thousand Steps. Have been here a few times & have actually contemplated just skipping the workout to grab a pie 🙈 I loveee the pies & the mash but the fact that we have to buy gravy seperately isnt very fun ☹️ My favourite is the beef & cheese and loved the spicy tandoori chicken pie was super good too but waaaay too spicy for me - but if you can handle the spice, go for it!

Been here for few times, this is one of my favorite place when i visit dandenong range area. Good location with bus stop nearby.<br/>I always tried their gourmet pies, beef rendang is my top choice. But be careful cos its really spicy.

Average pies. We took one beef burgundy and guinness gourmet pies and couldn't feel difference! Nice interior, friendly stuff, but pies are not the best at all! Will not come back

Pies are tasty, my parents love coming here after 1000 steps. I recommend sticking to the ones that are award winning. The creative ones don't tend to be as tasty as their classics.

We wound up here after walking out of another restaurant. We had to wait a bit, but the waitress assured us it would not be too long as the lunch hour rush was over. She was true to her word. The pies were delicious, as was the salad and the pea and ham soup. The chocolate mud cake we took away was beautifully rich and moist. The food came promptly and it cost half what we would have spent in the previous restaurant. Admittedly staff could have been friendlier, but they'd been rushed off their feet by the Fathers' Day hordes. I've been here 4 times before and I'll be coming back for more.

I give out a rating of 4.0 specifically for the beef & kidney (lamb's kidney). The pie tastes so good. It was so flavorful and quite new to me having kidney in the pie. <br/>The only thing is that it is way too expensive. A single pie costs $7 sth. <br/><br/>I also tasted other flavor (steak & mushroom, steak and curry.). Steak and mushroom Tastes pretty ordinary like other pie from else where. Nth really special and way too expensive for the price. <br/>Steak & curry is also a bit more special. It tastes way better & quite flavorful. <br/><br/>I would recommend you to order a flavor pie when you come here rather than a plain one as it tastes pretty ordinary (not worth the price)

Pies are rather average. The 3 gold medal award winning aussie pie lacked flavor, the pastry however was the redeeming point. The service overall lacked organisation, coffees arrived long after food had been finish. Verdict : hype is overated.

Having lived in the region for a few years now, I thought it was finally time to visit Pie in the sky. Having always seen huge crowds and long lines, i was keen to try the pies. <br/><br/>My fiance ordered a sausage roll and I ordered a beef and burgundy pie. I was a little disappointed to see a very soft, limp crust. At least the crust had a nice rich flavour but the filling was very bland as if very little seasoning went in to it. <br/><br/>I honestly expected a bit more given the popularity of this spot, plenty of bakeries in the hills area with better pies at a cheaper price. Maybe I just came here on a bad day. <br/><br/>Will pop in a again when I am in Olinda next, hopefully with better results.

The place is not as busy as it is warned by most reviews being the weather is cold and wet today, we are a group of seven people, we politely ask to put a chair at the end of a six people table, the waitress is very authoritative to say 'no', when we ask why it cannot, she say it is not convenient for her to walk pass, what an answer!! Her attitude is soooo unhelpful and arrogant that surprise our guests from Canada.....<br/>The pie is nice, but it does not justify to have an unfriendly service.... certainly it is a pity!!! I won't recommend to anyone👎👎👎👎👎
Tamara
Very busy place especially weekend when there's a lot of tourists and school holiday season. <br/>Cosy and delicious pie. Service could be slow sometimes. I've been here couple times on weekend and also weekday. <br/>Coffee was ok if you order long black.
AAA
Had a beef burgundy which only had one piece of chunky beef and it was a dry piece. Would say even Pie face pies are better. The curry beef pie was a tad tastier but lacked enough filling

Located in prime spot of Olinda, with a beautiful elevated cottage style building. Parking could be a bit of a hassle on a busy day and takes a bit of effort to find a spot, along with patience to dig onto your palette of pie. <br/>If you are a Pie Lover, then this is the place for you. They have heaps of various pies, but I felt the 'Mushroom & Cheese Pie' the best. I didn't like the 'Pie with mashed peas soup', it was too bland to my liking. <br/>

This place was packed! Went there for their scones and it was weird.. in terms of the texture, it was more like crumbly sponge cake rather than scones, their pea and ham soup was... OMG, yuck!! What is exactly that flavour?? Its just wrong, the herb was so overpowering and they didnt mixed it thoroughly, it was so thick and it felt like i was eating porridge rather than soup. Their pies in the other hand were awesome! Now i understand why they are so famous for it. <br/>Chicken and mushroom was okay but the beef burgundy was to die for, the meat was plenty, i can taste the red wine on the sauce and it was thick and juicy, and the pie skin was crusty and flakey, just YUM!

was on a day trip with a friend at mount dandenong and we decided to try out this place since he's been here before and recommended the pies here are pretty good. the place was pretty crowded when we arrived but we managed to get a spot after waiting for about 10 minutes.<br/><br/>we had the gourmet pies, i had the creamy chicken and mushroom pie with chips and salad as sides while my friend had the tandoori chicken and spinach pie with chips and salad for sides as well. the chicken and mushroom pie had generous amounts of chicken and mushrooms in it in a creamy sauce and it flavours delivered really well. the portion of the chips and salad was pretty big and i felt pretty full when i was done with the meal. my friend enjoyed his tandoori chicken and spinach pie as well, and it had a touch of spice in it due to the tandoori. <br/><br/>overall, had a pretty good experience dining here. service was good and the ambiance was really cozy. would come here again someday!

Nice Korma chicken pie and Tandoori chicken pie for the adults! Kid's meal with Chicken Strips and chips are good too! Overall nice place except a bit crowded during lunch time

The service was slow and inefficient when it is getting busy. You have no idea where to queue when you want to order, have a take away food or wait to be seated.<br/>We ordered Aussie meat bacon and onion, Pie beef burgundy. The pie was nice but it s pricey!

From the outset, I have reviewed this place 3 out of 5 not because of its quality of food, but because of its quality of service and mayhem.<br/><br/>I have been to this establishment many times over the years and the pies have always been very good in quality and taste. My most recent visit (Easter Monday) had me try their award-winning spicy vindaloo pie. I was not disappointed, nor were the people with whom I was dining.<br/><br/>The downside of many of my visits is the absolute mayhem that is very much a part of the experience. <br/><br/>The mayhem stems from the fact that there are in fact three queues: one for dining-in patrons who are waiting for a table, a second line for dining-in patrons who wish to order and pay for food, and a third line for take-away orders.<br/><br/>The confusion is paramount, and the ambience was distressing to me.<br/><br/>I will of course continue to visit this establishment because I do like the quality of their produce, but waiting 30 minutes for a table, or trying to figure out which queue to be lined up in, is not my idea of an enjoyable experience.<br/><br/>It is a real shame as the mayhem within the store is at odds with the general tranquillity of the region.<br/><br/>My recommendation is to visit this eatery during less busy periods (I.e. weekdays), and avoid public holidays.<br/><br/><br/>
Shannon Lyrics
I have been a casual client of Pie in the Sky, Olinda for more than 10 years. Despite the higher prices, I liked old fashion service and the pies I ordered. I took family and friends there occasionally. But last year, they replaced the restaurant style table ordering with counter ordering. I told a waitress that I felt as if I was served in Macdonalds, she smiled:"I understand what you mean." The prices keeps high after the money saving strategy.<br/><br/>The recent visits found that they employed many new people, the old fashioned service is no longer there. The experience is like a mixed bags. When I left my cotton shopping bag under the table and went toilet just ~2 min, a short waiter who has braids on his bald head "assumed" the bag owner has left and grabbed the bag and chasing "me" outside the cafe. Eventually, I have the bag back. On my way home, I found my uk-engineered RHA earphones are missing. It's a large soft bag and it's almost impossible for small items falling out. The short waiter may know where it is.<br/><br/>I emailed them twice and called them once, it's nearly a week and no one contacted me yet. I am over 50 and been very careful with my belongings, this is the first time losing property in a restaurant in my life. The main reason is they employed wrong people at multiple levels. At least, the manager needs to contact me at an earliest time after I called the second day. Beware of the waiter! This is the best advice I can give to help other consumers. Thank you.
Have Hunger, Will Travel
Would love to be able to critique the pies, but alas, I didn't make it that far. The place was totally disorganised. Arrived at 2:45pm to a still packed shop. Two lines, one for take-away and another for dine-in. No one there to greet the dine-in customers and the three staff huddled around the tills were slow and didn't seem to know what was going on. Very disappointing experience. I left glad that I hadn't made the journey to Olinda just for this place. If you're looking for a great pie, I highly recommend heading north to Gaffney's Pies in Heathcote, you can pick yourself up a nice red while you're there.

I love a good meat pie. Few things excite me more than a delicious country, home made meat pie when I'm out and about. The pie here was rubbish.<br/>Had an aussie pie which lacked any flavour whatsoever and the sausage roll which had zero salt or pepper. Milkshake was sub par also.<br/>I will say that the girls who served us were nice. <br/>Meh.
FoodSnob101
The so-called "Gold Medal winner" pies (from an unspecified competition in 2003 -- yup, that's almost 15 years ago) are average at best, and served with instant mashed potatoes and frozen peas -- for the premium prices they charge, this is entirely unacceptable!  <br/><br/>In addition, I experienced terrible, rude service from disinterested staff and poor cleanliness of premises (dirty tables, dirty cutlery).   The final straw was after pointing out my dissatisfaction, being told by a staff member who said to me "well, in OUR country, people appreciate good old fashioned service like we offer every day!" (a bluntly racist reference to my Asian background, implying that I was too 'unsophisticated' to appreciate their so-called 'service').<br/><br/>If you want better pies than those that are served here, try your local service station or 7-Eleven.  Avoid at all costs!

I hate to say it, but beware this over-priced tourist trap. We had 3 "cornish" pasties, 2 were burnt on the bottom & had to be sent back. Pretty bland to boot. Disappointing.
FoodLover.CW
Great pies, vanilla slice and apple & rhubarb crumble but is disappointment with the sausage roll - too salty and the meat is a bit mushy. Service were good.
Doug Linder
Less than mediocre. Drove 45 mins against my better judgement after reading all the negative reviews but recommended by a mate who's officially on my shit list now...<br/><br/>+Service was prompt and food came out within 5 mins. <br/><br/>-food,price<br/><br/>Sausage roll $7.45 : could have got a better one from Coles. Did not even finish it. <br/><br/>Beef burgundy Pie special $18~ : fake potato mash tasted like dough and ironically best of the dish. Pie average at best. Did not finish. <br/><br/>Earl grey tea: had a soapy flavour. Definitely was not swearing and sure nan wasn't around ... The waitress handled it appropriately ...offering another cup or not us not paying for it she apologised.<br/><br/>So all in all service was really good. Staff were pleasant. But food not worth the visit. <br/>Would not recommend or revisit anytime sooner or later. <br/>

Completing the 1000 steps, with already painful calves from versing my friend in a calf challenge, was totally made worth it with lunch at Pie in the Sky. This multi-award winning restaurant is rated on of, if not the, best pie shop in Victoria and it definitely did not disappoint. With such a large variety of sweet and savoury pies, there is sure to be one to satisfy everyone's taste buds.
Penguineats
Given the location, it is no surprise that these pies are targeted towards tourists rather than foodies in search of traditional and delicious Australian pies.<br/><br/>While nothing was THAT bad per se, the pies sold here were both unspectacular at best.

I am afraid I found this place to be little more than a glorified bakery cafe. The dining space is cramped and I felt hemmed in. And the while the vegetarian pasty I had was quite good, there was no effort in presentation, just plonked on a plate, no garnish, no side salad. I wouldn't have been surprised if  it had come in a paper bag with one of those pre-packaged tomato sauces. The service was adequate but unenthusiastic.
Anthony Tedesco
What a loverly location, let down by over priced and soggy food!<br/><br/>$5.55 for a side of soggy cold chips is far more than a rip off it's a travesty! Not to mention the pie that seemed to be reheated in a microwave..

Thanks to one of my friends who knew this place that we chanced upon this outlet. They couldn't seat us but the takeaway pies were outstanding and tasty and exactly what we needed in the 5 degree temperature. Loved the experience
Gem3121_99
I had some pretty high expectations for this place, as it's so heavily advertised with the local accommodation brochures and I admit I was disappointed. We were seated with no menus or instructions on how to order and whilst the staff were working hard, they seemed to be lacking direction by a floor manager. The staff were apologetic and when we did find out how to order, we waited over 30 minutes for a pie, pastie and a side of chips. <br/>The pastie was huge and well received, but I've had better cheese and beef pies at my local bakery.<br/><br/>I noticed that the place was packed with tourists and has so much potential. Hopefully they find a way to take advantage of that.

I've been doing hikes and walks in the area every weekend for the past 5 years and every time here it's just ridiculous how busy it is / which might be part of the appeal but today we came in and saw a huge line for inside so we sat outside instead. <br/><br/>We had a beef burgundy, beef Guinness, beef and mushroom and all pies were a bit average to be honest. My beef in the burgundy had multiple burned bits from the slow cooker or pot burning at the bottom. <br/><br/>Potato side with the pie was deb potato which I haven't had since my teenage years. Gravy was nice and peas cooked well. <br/><br/>For $70 with some ginger beer it was an expensive lunch for the quality but it was still tasty - we also had a sausage roll which was very tasty and we all agreed it was better than the pie!

I have to say this really is the best pie in Melbourne, enjoyed every bite. the mash potato and the pea are the best match for their pie. not to mention the super large size hot chocolate, it s soo much larger than i expected
Cookielessvee
Been to this place a few times. Recommend going before closing time as some popular pies are sold out. Cottage style interior, decent service but food tastes a while to come out. Crispy bowl of chips. Pie is crispy with flavoursome filling. Love the mashed potato, compact and fluffy

After a long day of trekking and seeing Yarra valley, Olinda pie in the sky cafe was a great end. The award winning meat pie was great ,the pastry was flaky and had the right crispiness. Very well done. Would stop through again when i in the area. Staff were friendly
Byron's Vanilla Slice Blog
A hearty and traditional slice in a beautiful spot. This slice was big and extremely filling. It rivals the Grants of Sherbrooke vanilla slice in terms of size and difficulty to finish. The twin layer filling is a nice touch and not one that I have regularly come across when out on the road. The airy pastry made the slice very easy to cut up and slowly chomp through, but I think with so much cream on offer a hint of strawberry jam would have given the whole thing a little more sweetness. A darker baked pastry would have also offset the intense creaminess of the mammoth slice. Nevertheless, a worthy inclusion into the Snot Blog.

Ive only had take away here. Pies are the best. I would rate it the highest for best pies but every time ive been here ive had to wait so long just to be served. Today none of the waitresses bothered to come to the take away counter until one there was a line of diners waiting in the diners queue. I was there first but got served last. Also ive driven past on weekends and the line is out the door so i suggest if you want to try their pies, cone on a week day.

They have very simple food choices and a lot of their "gourmet" pies have curry in them, so you need to be into curry.  <br/><br/>I asked for a fried egg on my salad and they said, " we don't have eggs and we don't have frying pans."   Seriously???  Lol.  Oh well.  Our waiter was very polite and sweet about everything.<br/><br/>The coffee was very average.  (The only good soy to use for any coffee is Bonsoy).<br/>The salads are great and from what my taste buds can understand, they use a really good quality olive oil with their dressings.  Very nice indeed.   Service depends on who's serving you.  I have been there before in the past and liked their old menu more.  <br/><br/>The other dishes on the menu, that aren't pie related are good and well priced.  <br/><br/>They are often very busy, with a lot of tourists.  <br/><br/>Toilets: They have gender neutral toilets, which is fantastic.<br/><br/>Wheelchair Access: It's a bit tricky, but there is space, so if you have the confidence, you could get them to open the double doors and have a lower floor table.  Although you would have to get in early, as they are often very busy.  Maybe make a booking first, if you have special needs.  Toilets are upstairs, so that could be difficult, unless you are able to get there with another walking aid, besides a chair.<br/><br/>I would go back again, but with low expectations and only if I want to have something super simple.

We saw this place on our way to the gardens and after a long walk in the chilly weather we wanted to sample the very famous pies they were keenly advertising. We didn't have to wait for a table but the wait staff were on the slower side. Unfortunately these were one of the worst pies we have ever had. We tried the beef burgundy and the aussie meat pie which were multiple award winners according to this establishment. The pastry was stiff and too thick for the amount of filling. The filling was acceptable in flavour but was way too dry. Barely any gravy in there. We opted for the classic chips and salad on the side as the pea and ham soup and mash looked rather unappetising. Our hot drinks arrived after we finished our meals which was disappointing. The vibe is very warm and has an rustic feel so it's nice for a hot drink and maybe the sweet pies. We haven't tried them but they seemed better. You can have better meat pie at a food court so don't bother.

Worth a visit. Great pies at great prices. The staff were the friendliest in the street. Beef and mushroom flavour were the best! Parking available out the back.

Had a great lunch here today. Good service and outstanding pie 👍<br/>Turned up a bit late and missed the lunchtime rush. Parking right out back.

Not a pie fan at all but persuaded by friends to come here and try. It was rainy day but still lots of visitors here. Waitress is nice and we got a table shortly. Tried beef and chicken pie which are nice and they came with salad and chips, all are in nice size

Pretty average for pies and dining in is so much more pricey than a takeaway. Its an once off visit for most unless you favour tandoori or korma pies - its not bad
Mrs Lavender
Seriously one of the best pie place in Mel with no doubt. Every time we come here was crowded, hardly can get a seat , but take away pie is still yum 。love it . A must visit place up the mountain.

Visited this iconic food landmark in Olinda this afternoon. It is unfortunate that people were unduly disappointed because of too high expectations of eating award winning pies. I have eaten here many times and each visit I enjoyed a great Aussie pie & Devonshire tea that always left me satisfied. The place was comfortably full today and staff were attentive and hospitable. A wonderful place for lunch whilst in the Dandenongs.
The Pierced Palate
If you want mouldy & 3 day old pies, you will love this place. And just like the design & architecture this place has that's set back to the olden days, you will get the same service by staff, at least by one of them in particular, telling you to sit at the bottom of the staircase & the tables aren't for us if you are having take away pies, because we aren't full paying customers.<br/><br/>Their pies were average, nothing to go 'Wooo I want more!!'<br/><br/>Their Guinness, mushroom, burgundy & plain pies all tasted almost similar and their rendang did not taste like rendang at all, tasted more like under cooked overpowering chili pies. 'Gold Medal Status' from the 90's maybe, but not anymore.<br/><br/>Coming back to the mould, we found mould spots, those stringy type moulds, on one of our pies. So a friend went in to talk to someone, to which a guy came out saying he was the manager, chef & owner. Good gesture of him by giving us their mud cake cupcakes but you cant fool 2 chefs who's been in the industry for over 15 years by saying its residue from trays & go on to say your pies are ONLY 3 days old & they shouldn't be mouldy. We could have gone without the 3 day information, let alone the mould.<br/><br/>As for the service one of their staff gave us, only after about 20 minutes of sitting at the table we were at, she came out & said 'You guys cant sit here, I have people who are waiting to dine in & you guys are having take away's' - pointed to the area that was at the end of the staircase beside us & told us to move there & said that the tables we were sitting at weren't for take away customers as we aren't full paying customers & that there are signs on the tables saying so, to which we all cleared the table to find, but we found no signs, she just walked off.<br/><br/>We know you are set in the country side but basic hospitality mannerism/professionalism or just basic common sense - you do not tell customers an area/tables are only reserved for dine in customers because take away customers aren't full paying customers. Even if they aren't full paying customers, to which is your cafe/bakery's choice of doing so, a simple 'Sorry the tables are only available for dine in customers, there is a seating space below if you don't mind shifting to, as I have a few people waiting on tables to dine in?' Would have been much more polite & hospitable.<br/><br/>From one group of hospo staff to another, every single customer, regardless full paying or not, is your bread & butter.

Wait for my take away pie for more than half an hour! Still waiting for it when I am typing this. They just forget I ordered something. Can't believe it.

Good atmosphere, average food... the location was nice for us during a trip to Dandenongs, especially as a respite from the rain and it had a lovely view over the ferns and trees and mountains :) However the food was just OK... I had a pea and ham soup which lacked flavour, and the pies were too much pastry and too buttery that the pastry sort of split. Again, the filling lacked in flavour. The staff were very friendly however it is very loud inside with many families and loud children which is not really my favourite thing to have a meal....
Julycheee
Hm, actually we found our pies very average. In fact they were under baked and the pastry was chewy and not very flaky. The filling was nice but not that outstanding from other pies I've had. The mashed potatoes were so bland, dry and had a strange taste I've never had from potatoes - my partner thought they tasted more like packet potato. Pretty disappointed with our food. I'm very glad we came in the late morning when the restaurant was mostly empty and didn't actually queue for food!

We are a local couple and have been visiting this place for years seamlessly. <br/><br/>Pies are definitely incredible. Love the chunky beef. There are vegetarian pies and they are nice, too.<br/><br/>Seating serve stop like 30 mins before business close time but you can still take away.
Clare S
Tried all the vegetarian pies... the Spinach and Feta Pie, the Pumpkin Pie, and the Veggie Pasty. Underwhelmed by all of them. Too much pastry, fillings mushy and no bite to them. We were also given a Cornish Pasty (meat) instead of the veggie which to their credit they replaced swiftly. Wouldn't recommend the pies here to veggies (can't talk for meat eaters). Actual place is cosy inside and a nice place to hide out of the rain. Staff are friendly ☺
