My wife really likes this Japanese place. We have been going here for nearly 5 years. Its a small family owned restaurant. It hasn't been updated in a long time. The family is nice and friendly. The food is fresh and tasty. For Entree's we had Takoyaki. Takoyaki is a wheat batter with octopus in it. Its sweet and kind of juicy We get this or Nasu Denggaku and that is deep fried eggplant with miso paste. Which we always enjoy. For our mains I had the beef-udon and its beef with udon noodles. Normally i get the Bento box which is really great but i thought i would try something different. It was alright. It was a big serving of soup and noodles. The noodles are always cooked perfectly, they never disintegrate and that's always a good thing. My wife had the Tempura- Udon, it is Noodle soup with vegetable tempura. She seemed to enjoy it a lot. We always like supporting the local small businesses. So we will always be back.
All the food tonight was fresh and delicious! Portion sizes good and pricing very reasonable. Worth the drive from Cheltenham, we will be back!
Stopped by here for some Friday lunch to go as I work nearby. Was surprised at first when we were told to wait 10-15 minutes but the sushi was actually being made from scratch, which I loved! It was lovely and fresh and really delicious. The portion size was great and such good value too. Would definitely recommend this place if passing by or looking for some sushi in Ormond!
A real hidden gem in the area, looks can be deceiving as the shop front and interior don't look very impressive but the quality of the sashimi is truly fantastic.
Ordered for takeaway and service was very slow but then we realised all the sushi and sashimi was being made fresh so it was worth the wait. The mixed pack was fantastic, particularly the California Roll and the salmon sashimi. My only criticism was that I with the fish had been colder as it was room-temperature when we ate it. But for $13, it's excellent value.
Overall would highly recommend, I'd like to come back and dine-in next time.
4.0 - Found this restaurant where is located nearby my place, I have made a takeaway orders which are Vegetable Tempura Udon, Chicken Udon and Agadeshi Tofu from Kinkaku for dinner in the cold weather. Fortunately, all food was good, just a little bit disappointed that the vegetables tempura udon does not have eggplant which is usually common to see that. Will come back to make other orders next time! 👍
Order whatever you want, it's all good! I'm a massive fan of the agedashi tofu, the okonomiyaki, the avocado hosomaki and the crab croquettes, for reasons I don't have the requisite culinary expertise to describe. The food is served quickly, is consistently beautiful and delicious, and is extremely affordable. The sushi is prepared in front of the entire restaurant at a small bench just behind the counter, and its all very theatrical for an otherwise very unassuming setting. Sandwiched between a nail salon and a milk bar in a small strip of shops just metres from the main Ormond business district, Kinkaku is a real "blink and you'll miss it" sort of place, which is very sad, because they do good business as is, and they'd be booming if they were a little better locatex.
My recommendation would be to go out of your way to visit Kinkaku if you're in or around the area and after good quality Japanese food.
Great gem of a restaurant that I wish I had known about sooner! Although small this place serves delicious, good quality food at a very cheap price. The sashimi was all very fresh and tasty. I think we got the larger size. Mixed Sashimi For mains, E gobbled up his Tonkatsu dish pretty quickly - it must have been really good! Had the vege bento box, which was large n contained some agedashi tofu and croquette cooked to perfection. Will def be back to sample more! Friendly service too

A really lovely, quiet, tasty, cheap Japanese joint. Great soups, pancakes and curries. Only qualm is they sometimes inconsistent with the number and types of vegetables served in their dishes, plus some of their dishes labelled as Vegeterian actually contain seafood.
Lovely cosy place, not a fancy pants restaurant but who needs that when the food is hearty and tastes great and at a good price. Will definitely be back soon for some more!
You can always tell when it's a real, made in-house gyoza versus the frozen type and Kinkaku provides the former. A very humble destination, nothing too flash. It is however, tidy, homely and efficient. A real family feel to it.
The pork gyoza were excellent, albeit a little charred. The chicken katsu curry don ($10 lunch special version) was huge for the price. The Dear Luncher smashed down these two for $16.50 in what can only be described as ridiculous value.
Examine the chicken in the curry, golden and crisp. Possibly the best chicken katsu curry don in the Sth East of Melbourne. The Dear Luncher has had a few of these over the years, you better believe it.
Kinkaku has been under The Dear Luncher's nose for a few years...and only in July 2018 has this one been ticked off. Outstanding.
Love the experience there. The manager and waitress are friendly and nice. Reasonable price. Bento Box is full-filled and rich-flavored. Udon soup with mixed tempura is the best.
Came here tonight for dinner with my family, and we ordered a few entrées: we had the California roll with beef and avocado and cucumber, vegetarian gyoza, miso soup. The handrolls were delicious, succulent and tender beef, the vegetarian gyoza was great - the pan-fried dumplings were cooked well and the filling wasn't overpowering. The miso soup was a small portion but very tasty.
For the main course, I had the Tori Don, which was chicken with teriyaki sauce, rice and salad. The dish was absolutely beautiful, the rice was a great accompaniment to the chicken. The salad was refreshing as well.
Overall, I really enjoyed the dishes day - and couldn't' believe the price, definitely value for money! Highly recommend.
Good quality food very reasonable prices. The teriyaki chicken skewers were in a lovely sticky sauce and perfectly cooked. We'll be back soon.

The tempura udon noodles and Katsu curry is the best! I've tried there udon elsewhere but the soup is just amazing. It's my go to hungover meal. Highly recommend this place!

Is a small restaurant run by the owner and helpers , the food well presented, and beautifully cooked, the flavours get your senses going , never a bad meal , always the same standard and the price is good
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. Service was friendly and fast and we asked for our meal to be spicy and they made it perfectly. The agedashi tofu was packed full of ginger and the sushi was fresh. Overall great place! Wish we had discovered it earlier!

Great little Japanese restaurant, located in Ormond. Reasonably priced but get in early as raw fish seems to sell out quickly. A few times I've been, there wasn't any salmon sashimi left at only 7:30pm. Other than that, fresh, authentic Japanese with friendly and polite wait staff!
My family and I live local, I recommended the beef teriyaki and fish teriyaki, sushi is spot on. My son loves the deep fried chicken,squid and dumplings . Even at times we have a little bit of a wait only being a small kitchen with few staff. The food is always delicious.
As for krissys review anywhere that you go the teriyaki chicken is always poor.
The best home-style Japanese food in Melbourne. Having tried dozens upon dozens of Japanese restaurants in both Australia and overseas (including Japan), the humble Kinkaku restaurants always comes out number one. The food is of good quality, not overseasoned, not oily, well-flavoured and good on the stomach. A good balance of protein and vegetables is a standout feature of their menu. To top it all off, they're damn cheap for what you get! Give them a shot.

First time here takeaway-VERY HAPPY!!-We tried the Katsu Curry Don and Teriyaki Chicken-both were really delicious. Loved the fact both dishes came with veggies as well, quality meat as well-delicious flavour all round! Friendly service, good prices- We will be back.

We Love It. We often drop in here for an evening meal. Not only is the food great, but it has a very friendly low key atmosphere. Great for a family with young children. And we think it is great value. The deluxe sushi and shashimi is great value and is very fresh. Way better value and quality than many other much more expensive japanese restaurants weve tried.
Vivian and the staff are always friendly and the service is very quick and the food is always good. As locals this has become our favorite eat out for a quick, tasty and well priced meal. We have introduced many friends as well who also love to join us at this family friendly restaurant. We love the wafu steak, age dashi tofu and kids love the tempura banana and icecream for desert. Due to my strong craving for Japanese food and laziness to drive too far from home, I decided to come here due to the 77% rating on urban spoon. First: despite the poor interior design of the restaurant, my first impression was that the waitress was very nice and attentive to us. The food was good, nothing spectacular or out of the ordinary but it was still nice and enjoyable. If you're looking for a cheap eat and in the area I would say the food here is good but nothing from my experience tonight will make me recommend this place to a friend or want to come back. Overall average to pleasant experience. Value for money though.
Not the greatest of dining out restaraunts but as a local Japanese take away this more than holds it's own. You'll find the usual array of Japanese favourites here including ramen soups and bento boxes, al done quite well. The only issue is one of value as kinkaku is basically a take away place at dine in prices. Definitely worth a try though.

One of the amazing Japanese restaurant. Owner is very humble and respectful, truely reflects the Japanese culture. They may not interact much but there food does the talking. Absolutely fresh, talk about the entrees or main, everything is delicious. Highly recommended.

We took the kids here for a delicious dinner. Ramen was outstanding. Bento Box was well presented and very tasty. So many wonderful gyoza, sushi and fried chicken dishes. Will definitely be making this a regular.
