Review Kung Fu Sushi - Ormond

Shir Adout
One of the best sushi I’ve tested in Mel! Love it!!
Mila Doza
The Tuna Tataki here is amazing. All very fresh very authentic. Owner is lovely. Would be great if they created a little more atmosphere to make it more of a date spot. Other than that, sooo good
Isabelle Kolek
the sushi and sashimi here is always so fresh, everything I’ve ever ordered is amazing. every time I walk in they are always so welcoming.
Dmitry Miller
Best sushi place in Ormond. Don't search for any other sushi place. Nice family business. Always taking sashimi as it's always fresh and delicious
Lisa Grey
Awful meal. I thought from reading the reviews we would expect meals that were of higher quality. I ordered a vego bento box with teriyaki veggies. Sounded delicious. It was literally a box of fried food with a tiny portion of tasteless old looking vegetables. The tofu was tasteless and the miso soup was even more tasteless. The veggie gyozos that I ordered separately were soggy and tasteless. One of the worst meals I’ve had and it was not a cheap meal.

Been a regular here since it opened near my school in 2016/17??? Very good sushi and the bald guy who runs the place is such a lovely man; is happy to make my order fresh for me every time and it is honestly 100x better than any store-bought sushi or the Kfc down the road.

Amazing sashimi - so fresh and delicious. Also quick and friendly service. Now one of our regular fave spots!

I ordered through Deliveroo -prawn nigiri & prawn fashion sandwich (I ate one of each before taking this photo) They gave me cute little avocado rolls as a bonus! And included all condiments 👌 Can’t wait to order again 😄
Alvin Lee
Ordered the chicken teriyaki Don. There was a lot of rice and ingredients. I liked that a lot of sauce was provided which prevented the dish to be too dry. However, I do feel like I’ve had better chicken teriyaki Don elsewhere. Pretty average
Charlotte Cooper
The sushi is surprisingly good but not much of a variety. Maybe I didn’t go in at the right time.<br/>Great customer service and you will enjoy a nice quality quick meal there.
Cate
Not rate this place at all, the customer service is pathetic, waited 20 minutes for the lady to take our table order. The guy making the sushi uses the same gloves, answered the phone with them, took them off and blew into them to re-use disposable ones - never going back 🤢. Better Japanese places in the area

The sushi has always been the best in the neighbourhood if not all of melbourne! The staff are all very friendly and the boss is an absolute legend! Always happy to cater for his customers needs. The salmon teriyaki bento box is a definite must try as the salmon is cooked perfectly, so delicious!

They have wonderful quality beef in teriyaki beef don which is awesome!! The price increased a little bit high but worth it!😋 I was there 8 pm still tables are occupied. It is a good place to relax after work. The boss is an interesting guy, friendly to everyone. I love there.

I’m not sure what’s happened to this place, however it definitely isn’t positive. In the last two months the prices have increased and the quality of the food has decreased. They now charge $24 for a beef teriyaki don when they charged $11 for the same dish only two months ago. I ordered the chicken yaki udon as per usual and I was disappointed. It was served on a flat plate which was strange and the only vegetable it contained was cauliflower, not to mention it was completely flavourless. On top of this all, the customer service is poor and the wait time for food was excessive. Sorry, I’ll be going down the road to Kinkaku from now on.
Carrie
Disappointing. I had the veggie udon soup and it was terribly flavourless (just tasted like water with basic vegetable and tofu!). The waitress was rude and didn’t even take our order - after about 15-20 mins of waiting for her to serve us, we ended up ordering at the counter instead.

Beautiful bento box! The salmon sashimi was wonderful. Takoyaki is just okay but I would love to come back here for a takeaway again. Thank you!

Great sushi!<br/>Haven’t tried the other items on the menu yet, but there is options for main dishes.<br/><br/>Sushi made to order or grab some in the window if you’re in a rush!<br/><br/>Brown sushi also available.<br/><br/>Best sushi in south east, guaranteed.

We have enjoyed the sushi from here since it opened about six years ago. Most weeks we have placed the same order over this time. My daughters have also selected Kungfu Sushi for their birthday dinners. <br/>Sadly it appears to have changed owners who are not particularly astute when it comes to business and pleasing customers. I’m not a high maintenance customer however, when something is added to your weekly order adding 25% to your bill, the onus should not be on the customer to cover costs. <br/>I’m so disappointed and won’t be returning given their very poor handling of THEIR mistake. Don’t worry, I make lots of mistakes and take ownership of them.

Great little sushi place. Always friendly, food comes out really quickly and all made fresh to order. The Okonomiyaki is amazing. Futomaki is always great as well and the teriyaki salmon is super fresh and tasty.
The Dear Luncher
"Everybody was Kung Fu fighting"<br/><br/>And this Salmon Maki made its way FRESH into The Dear Luncher's hands as fast as lightning. Finally some crispy chicken rolls with adequate moisture via mayo. So often at other establishments these are overly dry. The tuna and avocado - high grade. <br/><br/>This may just be The Dear Luncher's new favourite place for this type of cuisine on the go. <br/>
Burgers Of Melbourne
Had a few meals from Kung Fu. Had a few hot meals as well as sushi. I did find the hot, cooked meals quite good and flavoursome. The sushi has been a little hit and miss.
Munchie Master
Great food. I like to try out lots of Japanese restaurants and comparing them with eachother. Kung Fu Sushi is definitely one of my favorites. Couldn’t complain about anything on the menu yet. Not cheap but not extremely overpriced. Located right next to ormond station on the end corner of the shop strip.

Gotten takeaway sushi here plenty of times. Always tastes great & fresh. They're made nice and fat as well, so you're getting your money's worth, unlike sushi sushi which are like twiggy sticks in comparison.
Who Loves Good Food
We weren't sure about this place, with knowledge that its owners are Chinese, not Japanese. On 1st visit, the food was ok, not too bad. <br/>Takoyaki - evidently missing the bonito flakes which is so important, the balls itself were quite floury & bland<br/>Salmon maki - pieces were huge<br/>Unagi don - tasty <br/>Katsu don - chicken was a bit bland & lacked sauce<br/>Beef fried rice - bland, had to add chili sauce<br/>Surprisingly, many pop in to take-away sushi rolls.

The high rating kind of puzzles me. It was okay, but just okay. Personally, I don't care if a Japanese place is run by "authentic" Japanese or not, but a lot of reviews I've seen tend to focus on that. Chinese chef at this place, counter service was manned by a kinda sullen teenager. This is a tiny hole in the wall place, the fish was fresh but cutting could have used a bit more skilled- some of the fish parts were still stuck together. Value for money but I wouldn't make a trip out of the way to come here.

I've only ever dined in twice or thrice here. Presentation is basic as it usually is for this price range and the bento boxes I was served before looked to be over-big for the small amount of food they were carrying. However, their sushi is very fresh and in turn, tastes great. Favourites are the prawn and California sushi. Off their menu, their saki ebi maki is my go-to every time simply because the seafood is fresh. I'm not too much of a fan of their rice dishes as I find that the the pieces of meat are too small in proportion for the amount of rice that's on there. For the price, the vegetarian bento boxes had small servings and command very little with regards to taste as everything but the sushi pieces was fried.<br/><br/>Speed of service is fast as a lot of people do takeaway and our experience with the service has always been quick, helpful, and very friendly. They do pick ups as well and these are usually available in 15 minutes which is very convenient when we can't bother with cooking dinner.<br/><br/>This place is relatively clean when I do visit and you get all sorts of people as this is close to the train station. It's definitely one of the more convenient places to go for Japanese food in Ormond and would recommend to anyone who needs quick, tasty fare.

Came here during the week - didn't realise how busy it was! There was about 20 or so that came in for take away. <br/>We ate in and were satisfied, the food was good and the staff quite friendly. The menu was surprisingly full of options considering that it's a fairly small shop front.<br/>
Shimona
My 2nd takeaway experience. Staff were efficient and friendly service with a smile! Fresh sushi rolls and the una don I had was very tasty. I like that it came with extra veg.. Usually traditional unadon means just unagi on rice. But the addition of a small salad and some stir fried veg made me feel happy to have a balanced (healthier) meal!
Mr. Brunch
Great food and reasonably priced. Not too much more to say. Probably one of the best Japanese places around the area. I'm a local and I've tried a fair few Japanese places in the area, and this the best by far.
Brungiel
Kung Fu does great sushi. It is always fresh and they are willing and happy to make up brown rice/variations upon request. The service is always good.
The Food Traveller
We placed an order for chicken fried udon and beef sliced teriyaki don. The fried udon was really good but the beef don was way too sweet and the beef slices were not tender at all. Friendly hosts!
VoomD
Kung Fu Awesomeness! Oh so much more to offer than sushi....but the sushi is also good. If I'm after a quick lunch this is the place I go to when I'm in the area.

In the words of Immortan Joe: mediocre...<br/><br/>Me and my partner ordered at the front desk and sat outside to enjoy the nice weather. After 20 minutes of waiting we went up to the front desk to inquire about the state of our order. It had been sitting there for the last 5 minutes without the attendant letting us know it was ready, even though she could see us.<br/><br/>Got back home and because of the wait most things were soggy. The miso soup was sour and lacking in substance. Could have been out of a can. The teriyaki beef was okay for the price. My partner enjoyed the katsu and we both enjoyed the goyza and pancake.<br/><br/>Most likely will not be going back.
EatToLive
One of the best Japanese restaurants in Ormond in my opinion. Great variety of a la carte menu besides the sushi display. Friendly service always makes food taste better here and it's reasonably priced. If you live locally and crave for Japanese food, give Kung Fu Sushi a try. Recommended.

A REAL DISASTER! I have been in this restaurant before and it was ok, but last night the food was horrible. Unaghi defrosted on the spot and totally stale and tasting terrible,  flying fish stale caviar (instead of salmon roe) in very tought nori, crab (????) salad...yuk!!! The owner was obviously not there and the personnel was certainly not attending to the customers, but they were chatting and laughing between each other. When I arrived home I was sick and today I am still not better. NEVER AGAIN!!!

Handy place for a quick lunch but nothing to rave about really. Had the tempura . The batter was thick and not light like it should be but the fish and vegetables in the batter were fresh and tasty. The miso eggplant was good. The staff are pleasant and there is plenty of room to dine inside. So kind of halfway .. Not terrible but can't rave either.,

Sushis are not bad. Most of the time you can ask them to make fresh sushis for you. I have tried the chicken katsu don. Dont have that much flavour because too much soy sauce.
R
I'm not a great fan of sushi as many places can't get it right but I can eat sushi here<br/>The avo and fresh cucumber with mayo wrapped with rice in seaweed leaves yummy! No one does better sushi than these guys
Calvin1996
Disappointed by someone smoking in kitchen :(<br/><br/><br/>-----09 May, 2015-----<br/><br/>Great food - very fresh - lots if vegetarian choice
Crobins27121976
Chinese chef, no thanks. Chinese chef who smokes....no thanks
Julian
The ramen is not good at all. Maybe the other stuff is better. But the ramen is really bad. The broth tastes of the noodles, the noodles are overcooked and stuck together. Possibly the worst ramen I have had.
Leelee
This place is great. Always fresh food, service is lovely. I have been many times and am never disappointed!

Great sushi. Tried this out tonight with my partner and wasn't disappointed, the sushi & sashimi were prepared fresh while we waited, the quality of the tuna sashimi (our favourite) was OUTSTANDING, and the prices were more than reasonable. Got the Combo 1 sushi/sashimi platter and a serve of the Rainbow Maki for under $30 and was more than enough to feed two people. Will definitely go back.

Mr.Q. Freshest sushi in town, love it.
CR
Weekly Staple. Good sushi, with brown rice options made to order. This is my good to place when I'm not sure what I want for dinner.
Behind The Pass.
Just had a pork katsu curry don. It was horrible and tasteless. Bad service. Staff never askes if you want some water. Not authentic Japanese.

Fast, friendly and fresh sushi. This is standard Skippy sushi but it's done very well. Fresh ingredients, friendly service and quick to the table. <br/>Plenty of young families, students and locals came by for takeaway while I was there - a good sign.
Munchy
Pork hand rolls!!! I don't usually do fried in a hand roll, but they are awesome! <br/>Spicy salmon is also quite nice.

11/10. I love this place so much i travel from kew maybe once a fortnight to dine here, amazing food, service, and prices. not a big issue but if the outdoor area was able to fit more people in that would be amazing, apart from that, everything is great about this place. would and have recommended this place to everyone

Amazing food!. My fiancé and I are regular diners at Kung Fu Sushi. We drive from Mentone just to eat their amazing food. Their sushi is fresh and tasty and made right in front of you. We order brown rice sushi as we prefer it and it is the best sushi in Melbourne. The tofu, vegetable and udon noodle miso soup is beautiful as is the beef, silk noodles and rice with sukiyaki sauce (one of our favourites). We are slowly making our way through the menu and have loved everything so far. All of their sushi and sashimi is beautiful and served with plenty of pickled ginger (which we love and can never get enough of). Kung Fu Sushi never fail to provide fresh and extremely tasty food, along with great service and very reasonable prices. Definitely a place for a quick eat-in or take away meal. We love it!

Very good-quick local clean japanese food, we go quite a bit

Excellent fresh tasty food that is quite unique in taste and at a great price. Staff are very friendly. It's definitely one of my favourite places to eat.
Bella
Amazing hand rolls. I go here at least twice a week for the sushi. Most of the time it's made right in front of me, and I struggle to go elsewhere now. I'm pretty sure that all of the chicken is breast, and the teriyaki chicken hand rolls are to die for.

BEST SUSHI IN ALL OF MELBOURNE!. This must be my favorite place to eat in all of Melbourne! Literally the freshest sushi (hand rolls) I have ever had! Great customer service as well - they will make fresh hand rolls in front of you if you so request! Bento boxes are also to die for! Don't get me started on their teriyaki...yes, it's just that good! I visit this restaurant a few times a week. My partner and I will even travel from our bayside home on weekends for some lunch or dinner. Everybody I have recommended Kung Fu Sushi too is now addicted! Cannot get enough!
Team Oliver
We love the bento boxes, my favourite choice of takeaway! Mmmmmmm bento box!

Tasteless and Expensive Thi.... Tasteless and Expensive<br/>This is the first time I went to this restaurant and the first thing I saw was no one was inside. And I wasn't surprised. The sweet chilli chicken don was expensive and sour. And worst of all, there was only a few pieces of chicken and little rice. I will never come here again.

Wrong restaurant. One of the previous comments is for the wrong restaurant.

LOL@ AL. Kinkaku is actually a contender for the worst sushi place in melbourne, let alone in ormond. kinkaku are disguisting, tiny little sushi rolls with filthy seaweed and disgusting poorly constructed meat/seafood/vegetarian combinations, service is woeful. kung fu has already taken most of kinkakus customers, they will be gone by the end of the year. shocking service shocking venue, Kung FU a winner all round
Boss
Food is wonderful but the Service is atrocious. I have tried to forgive them but they consistently muck up my order and/or forget to include dishes.
Kage_7
My favorite sushi joint. California hand rolls and the fashion sandwiches are boss. Consistently good
Al
Im a sushi fanatic - this was the worst. I have been going to kinkaku (next to ormond kfc) for years, but it is shut between 3pm-530pm, so i went here. the tuna rolls were average at best, but the salmon roll was absolutely DISGUSTING and easily the worst sushi i have ever had. had a bite of each of the two salmon rolls to make sure it wasnt just one bad one, they were both awful. they had been left out for so long the seaweed was hard, the rice was hard, the avocado was going off and the salmon itself was tough, which salmon shouldnt be! ever!<br/><br/>all in all, waste of money. i STRONGLY recommend going to kinkaku, its literally 2 mins walk from this place, and they make the sushi once you order it, they dont make it in bulk and then just leave it sitting there, going off. i will never go here again, next time kinkaku is shut i will just make the drive to tokyo deli on glen huntly road. and extra 10 minute drive, but at least i can actually eat their sushi!

They will prepare with Brown rice. This is a great local and I love that they will prepare susi with brown rice for you. Great food and great place
MikeLitoris
Great Place. Kung Fu sushi constantly produces a high quality meal for an equally as high quality price, as an affordable, friendly, and tasty venue it is the perfect location to enjoy quality food for eat in and take away. it is no suprise that it is delicious as the owner comes originally from Elsternwicks Momoco, possibly the best melbourne location for crispy chicken and assorted "californian" sushi combinations and sushimi combinations.
Hospo Pro
Fantastic all round. Great price, fantasic quality food and nice service. Loved that they made me fresh salmon rolls after they had ran out for takeaway, will continue to visit.
Racy_jacy
They made sushi on the spot on request, just for take-away! And it was totally yum!

Incredibly Good. Kung Fu sushi is the gem that this dreary food area has needed!! Excellent food.. Fantastic prices and friendly helpful staff. I am slowly marking my way through the delicious menu and loving every moment!! Fresh sashimi and sushi made right in front of you, and generous serves. Will continue to go back time and time again!
Amanda
Fresh sashimi that rivals Nobu and Buddha Bar! Cannot wait to try more of the menu. Very friendly service & cheap. My new favourite local!
Pete
Got some take away with a friend and <br/>we thoroughly enjoyed it. <br/>Quality food, great portions at a very reasonable price.<br/>Can't fault it!<br/>This is definitely my new local Japanese.
Emma
Great Place!. Amazing sushi and great customer service! If you ask, they'll make incredibly delicious brown rice sushi too. I love this place.

Get Your Kicks. Kung Fu Sushi materialized just metres from Ormond train station around six weeks ago, and is slowly gaining a regular customer base. The gentleman founding the enterprise was previously behind the sushi counter at Elsternwick’s Momoco Sushi and has made a break to launch his own venture.<br/><br/>The menu at Kung Fu Sushi includes a diverse assortment of sushi, sashimi and maki rolls, the quality of which is very good given the reasonable pricing. There are small dishes such as gyoza, age dashi tofu and okonomiyaki, along with a selection of Donburi (rice based meals) and ramen/udon noodle dishes. <br/><br/>There’s also a choice of four different Bento Boxes, with three of the four options just $15, and a Bento that includes teriyaki salmon the most expensive at $18.<br/><br/>The dining space is big and bright and whilst the set up is fairly casual, they do provide table service and permit BYO. Whether you’re looking to eat in or merely grab some take away, Kung Fu Sushi is worth checking out.
