Randomly stopped in here one night on the way home, it was one of those places... it was going to be horrendous or amazing food.... thankfully it was the latter!!
The place is horrible, really dated and scruffy, so if you’re after ambiance this is not the joint to go to, if however you want great service and awesome authentic dumplings- this is the go!
We ordered starters really- lots of them, neither of us are into main meals really but saw some coming out- portions were massive!
Overall it was great, just a bit of a dump, but hey if the food and service are good I can deal.
Will be back again for sure. 👍🏻

Absolutely love this place!! The new owner is really friendly and very accommodating. We came in with someone who is vegan and he made sure that the food was vegan friendly :) serving sizes are definitely enough to share a few dishes between a group.
Ordered take away tonight. First time in a while as I have struggled to find a decent Chinese restaurant in this area. Expectations were low. We ordered chicken and cashews, roast pork and vegetables, and beef and oyster sauce. I was impressed with the freshness of the ingredients. You could taste individual meat and veg within the dish and did not taste like it came out of a can (like others I have tasted in the surrounding suburbs)
I thought the flavors were a little mild for me though overall had a lovely meal.
'Gourmet No.1' is a local Chinese shop in Pakenham, we ordered the Family Pack which is $51.20 for bag of pawn crackers, 8 homemade dim sims or 8 homemade spring rolls, then 3 choices out of about 12 main dishes, along with a large special fried rice and 1.25litre bottle of drink. At first i thought $51.20 seemed expensive but when we opened the food containers the serving sizes were excellent. The meat to vegetable ratio was perfect, alot of meat which you usually dont get. We ordered the chicken and vege in curry sauce, sweet chilli chicken and beef and black bean and couldnt fault any of it. We really enjoyed it and it was well worth the $51.20!
Went to dinner with friends and family, and had a great night at John's restaurant. Food was excellent and the service was fantastic. John the NEW owner treated us like kings. Will definitely be going back.

Myself and my partner went to gourmet no 1 last week and The dumplings were amazing and awesome service !! After the new management the food is just delicious and very fresh! Would defiantly recommend!!! Also the manager John takes great pride within his business and made sure our food was as we liked it and if not was happy to change ! Love love it
We were really pleasantly surprised by our meal at Gourmet no. 1. Sadly, there aren't a lot of great places to eat on Pakenham's main street and we weren't expecting much from this place. However, as far as suburban Cantonese restaurants go this was one of the best we've been to. We wanted to reminisce of our youth eating Chinese so we got honey chicken and Sichuan beef. Both delicious. The honey chicken was really crispy and not too sweet. The Sichuan beef was tender and vegetables crispy with a nice sauce. We also got homemade dim sims which had a good delicate wrap on them. The decor is a little dated, however the food and the service makes up for this.
Best Chinese Pakenham. As far as Chinese food in Pakenham, this one is the best. We regularly go here on a Sunday night for dinner, quiet, quick, efficient and accommodating. Obviously lacks in environment in decor and atmosphere, but regardless of that, it is very nice.
