Review Pak Hailam Kopitiam - Parramatta

I was ready to be really disappointed by this place, but I ended up being moderately satisfied with my meal. The floors and the table were sticky, the coke was flat and they were out of spring rolls. However, the seafood Tom Yum soup was delicious. It didn't have enough seafood in it; two prawns, five pipis and two pieces of squid, but the flavour of the broth was incredible. The chicken wings were good too. They were brilliantly moist and tender, but with a lovely crispy skin. The sauce (that came to the table in a plastic container - why?) was amazing- spicy, savoury and rich. I loved that sauce. The fresh juices were good too. Overall, the food was very tasty, but the restaurant seemed like everything had a thin film of grease over it. It was a bit gross.

Went here as my Dad wanted Malaysian. I picked this place as we wanted to try it. But after ordering all our dishes and barely waiting for the orders to come in. We were all pleasantly surprised. Yes the rice dishes were small. But we shared them. I loved the Tom Yum Fried Rice and children loved the Hainanese Chicken Rice and all its condiments. The chicken was so soft and tender. The beef rendang was moist and tender and so tasty. The Sambol prawns were expensive but so worth it. The belacan green beans were good without being deep fried and oily. The chicken satays were so good. The lined really small and burnt but they were done really good, so tasty with the satay peanut sauce. Everything tasted authentic, and light. We will be back. The restaurant was quite contemporary decorated, and I liked the lamps and open kitchen and bar.

Great Malaysian Cuisine! My friend bought a Groupon voucher for this place. Received more than enough food for 4 people, great value. Pretty authentic flavours. This restaurant is like other Malaysian restaurants, but with a much cheaper price tag. Definitely worth trying. Really friendly customer service as well.

Decent spot for lunch and had good lunch deal. Not the best Malaysian food I have had in Sydney but serves the purpose for Malaysian cuisine craving. Malaysian tea was great. Was kinda disappointed that they don't make roti canai for lunch.

Edit: Came back here again and it was pretty lousy. Chicken rice chicken portion was way too small and boney which was brittle and made it tedious to eat. They served me soy milk that was not the asian kind.. paid $3 for a cup. Disappointed -------------------------- Food was great! The chicken rice was tender and scrumptious. Roti cani was one of the best I have tasted in Sydney which came with 3 different sauces. And the wonton hor was a large serving and also tasted great. Every dish was not overly salted and oily unlike other Malaysian/Chinese restaurants.

Very nice ambience and food was tasty. Had the lunch special jumbo nasi lemak and $1 side of chicken bites. Soy bean grass jelly drink was a let down. I would return to try the other menu items.

Service was good and fast. Ordered Nasi Lemak but I think the rice need to be more "LEMAK". Overall very nice environment, cozy up market feel. Portion is small compared to a normal Malaysian restaurant but the atmosphere overall is much better.

Well, i paid this small place of Nasi Lamek Chicken for 13.90$, there is just a piece of chicken with small sode dishes.Over priced. I would pay 8$. The rotti was good though

Great value weekday lunch specials. One of the best nasi lemaks in Parramatta!

Situated a few steps from the picturesque Parramatta river!!!

Well most of the things were great and only 1 thing to improve.
What we loved: Food taste, reasonable price, service and location. Chicken curry, roti planta, nasi goreng and salt pepper squid were lovely.
Needs to improve: I didn’t like the ambience as it was quite dark inside.
Overall it was great and will visit again.

Been here several times for lunch. It is on the expansive side but includes a drink and entree as well. The nasi lemak is pretty authentic. I quite enjoy the Malaysian milk tea.

Great Malaysian dishes! They have all you can think of when you think of the Malaysian cuisine. We had the Nasi Goreng which was fine. Very tasty but nothing to scream about. The Nasi Lemak Fried Chicken though is another story! Literally cooked to perfection, the crispy skin pops in your mouth and the chicken meat so juicy tender! We loved our meals so much we stayed for dessert and it was not to disappoint! I forgot the name of our desert but it was the first one listed! Must try.

Excellent, excellent Malaysian cuisine. Everything we ordered was delicious, authentic and didn't have to wait long at all. The chicken curry and Malaysian fried rice are recommended, so we're their noodles, but I'm sure everything is. Highly recommended.

This place is a little underwhelming.
I stepped in thinking I've have something on the light side. (Having passed a number of steak and pizza places) perhaps I should've been more patient and taken a look at the review... ambience not much going for it. Service not much going for it. Quality of the food not much going for it.
Looked busy enough. Perhaps they're seeing something I don't. Shame I'll probably never find out.
Overall it's below average.
Came here on a voucher ($29 for 2 ppl). It aint too bad. Good service, ambience and food. Ordered roti, hanainese chicken, char keuy teow mee and sago condensed milk dessert. Its nice but not amazing to come back to.

Used a scoopon voucher but when I looked at the menu, prices seem comparable to Papa Rich but like Papa Rich I find the menu to be limited though Papa Rich has more in there drinks menu

The drinks were nice,my lemon ice tea was the right sweetness and my wife's ice tea was a little sweet but I liked it also

Food wise the entree's were better then the mains and food came out pretty quick

Satay chicken sticks, different from other places but I liked this version. The chicken meat was chunky in size but soft to eat. Interesting satay sauce, there is uncrushed peanuts in there sauce and the more you put your stick to the bottom of the sauce plate, the more flavour your going to get. I would get this again

Plain and egg roti's are the Longest dish to wait for,I'm assuming the make it fresh. Plain is better than egg but both flavoursome and the sauces were not too spicy either. Would get this again

The mains were disappointing. Char Kuey teow mee didn't have the flavour I was expecting and wanting. My wife's Nasi lamak she would give it 4/5
The coconut rice was the standout on that dish, very fragrant and you can taste the subtle spices in it

Our friend had this flat noodle in egg gravy dish, the name escapes me but that was average at best, not much taste

Both noodle dishes had cartilage in there chicken pieces which reduces the dining experience. They lose points for that,it shouldn't be there!

Overall the entrees were better than the mains but currently this place is still better than a similar place on the other side of the road a few doors down

The food is really way below average. . Satay was deep fried instead of BBQ. Don;t even bother with the hot beverage and dessert especially red bean soup..... REALLY DISAPPOINTED !!!!

We loved the food here. Nothing to complain. The staff is very friendly and all dishes are awesome. Laksa was too good. The roti n curry is also awesome

Nice Malaysian restaurant, not so fancy looking.. street food place serving good basic food. With a scoopon deal we managed to get table full of food and a large soft drinks. A little language barrier was when ordering the food, but end result good. Nice place and happy to visit them again.

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND FOOD. We had a groupon voucher and I guess that was where our problem was as I assume they don't like to have return customers. Our food and drinks came over an hour later (with multiple complaints on our behalf) and tables that came and ordered after us have received their meals. Also, my advice is if they offer you the wrong meal (which happened quiet frequently to us and other customers) just take it as you most likely won't get what you've ordered until an hour later.

I specifically asked if everything on the menu was available before we went in and the waitress said yes (twice). Turns out the ice kacang, sotong kangkung and chicken chop were not available. The Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken left a lot to be desired. Dahl and curries that came with the roti canai wasn't anything to rave about but the roti itself was crispy and yums. Char kuey teow was pretty good and so was the mee goreng. Loved the hailam coffee and the soya bean with grass jelly drink. One thing to note is there's a pretty decent amount of MSG/flavour enhancer in their dishes so expect to be a little thirsty after. Although, that shouldn't be a problem once the ice kacang is ready to be served in a fortnight (according to the waitress)!

Friendly service, very reasonable prices and food was decent. The chicken satay sticks were not great but then again I have yet to have good satay in Sydney. The spicy pan mee and mee goreng were quite nice.
