One of my faves restaurants in perth. The owners are Taiwanese and know how to make food look and taste beautiful. The aburi salmon sushi here has always been a favourite and the Raghu cottage pie is very tasty.
Had diner here a few nights ago, and honestly they smashed it out of the park! The food, the service and the venue all get a mighty thumbs up from me. It’s always a winner, I’d recommend this place to anyone❣️
Great service and great food. We tried the $49pp tasting menu which was very filling. Really loved my chicken teriyaki main as the skin was so crispy yet the meat was so juicy, the best chicken teriyaki I have tasted in years. Hubby and I have already planned to go back to try their sashimi.
The food, service, ambience, friendly staff and everything else about Bonsai makes it an absolutely fabulous place. Great for evening out with friends. First time here, loved it totally. Keep up the good work.
Really good food and service. If in Northbridge this restaurant is a must.
The food is well worth it. The crab was a little funky, I am used to it being a little more cleaned.
All in all a great experience.
This is my favourite
restaurant ever! Isaac and his staff always deliver excellent service and even
better food. I come here regularly, and everyone I have brought here have been
thoroughly impressed. I could eat the share plates all night, as there is such
an awesome range. Thank you Bonsai! Keep up the good work!
I’ve been to Bonsai several times over the years now and the food never disappoints. We ordered 8 dishes to be shared amongst 4 people and it was just nice, there was just enough room for dessert after. The unanimous highlight of the day was the caramel soy duck.
We came here for dinner as recommended via zomato. We were tourists to Perth city and walked there after work. A quick walk and easy to find. Nice ambience and attentive service. Each dish was delicate and packed with flavour. Fresh oysters and salmon nigiri was my fav along with the creme brulee. I love oysters but frying it creates the 'fishy' juices from the oysters and if you're senstive to that taste then I wouldn't recommend it. Will return and try other dishes
Yummy Japanese food! The ingredients are so fresh, the salmon melts in your mouth and so refreshing.
The price is not cheap but you may come here for that special occasion and be pleased.
Was here to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. We ordered a few starters and mains to share. Food was not bad but the portions were small and pricey. I particularly enjoyed there pan seared scallops and bbq unagi! It was great that their mains came with a bowl of rice. However the dishes took quite a while to be served even though the restaurant was not even half filled. The starters were out one at a time and after that the mains took about 30 min to be ready. Everyone was pretty hungry (hangry even) during the wait...
Wagyu beef and salmon sushi are done to perfection and fairly priced. Tofu was tasty but nothing exceptional in my opinion. The quick service is a plus!
This place is absolutely amazing. The mix of authentic Japanese flavours with Australian produce is fantastic. The staff where so friendly and informative I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is visiting Perth
Can’t fault this place! My husband and I have been here more times than I can count, and we have never been disappointed. The food is amazing, super tasty fresh and they are always willing to make adjustments if possible. The service is helpful, friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is great. This place is good for couples, groups, a quick bite or special occasions. Highly recommended!
Love it! This whole place is just an absolute jam. Love their chicken salad with crispy wonton skin, their sushis are wonderful and I ordered salmon as main and there was no fault at all. The ambience is great for date night, wishing that the lights could be a bit brighter but oh wells, the service was prompt. Even better with our entertainment card deal too :), kudos!
The very first time we came, we had some of their Hot/Fried Shares, and we weren't really impressed. Presentation was ok and food wasn't wow, especially the Cheesy Pork Katsu- we had two full strips and one strip cut into halves, probably so the plate looks fuller with more pork strips on the plate.
But we've been back the second time to have the Christmas Menu, and this time, we've had a much better experience from the first time we came. With the Christmas menu, we had a variety of excellent dishes that were beautifully cooked. From starters to main, all dishes were well-executed with good time intervals, and tasted delicious. The steak and BBQ eel were so moist and tender, and full of flavours! Crispy Tempura Squid Salad and Chilli Crab Claws were also a crowd winner. Service was superb and we had a very enjoyable dining experience.
Very glad we came back the second time to try them again. Will be back again to try other dishes.

We have been here many times over the years. It is a reliable place to either walk in or make a big group booking. Service is always friendly and efficient. My top dishes are the crunchy wanton chicken salad, crab claws, miso mushroom soup and panko crumbed oysters. Will keep coming back.
We had the banquet for two and it was absolutely delicious. Everything was cooked to perfection and the flavours were brilliant. It was a shame we were rush prior the theatre as I would have liked to relax more.
It was my first time so I wanted to post a few photos but I got so caught up in the food that I completely forgot!!!! The place is so cool you almost feel like you are overseas chilling out! But the service was top notch. From the first conversation to each meal as it was delivered you were made to feel like the most important people in the restaurant. Amazing food and amazing service will definitely be back!!!
Nice food, but it felt abit on the pricey side. Had the set meal but it still left me abit peckish. May go back and try ordering individual dishes before i write them off as overpriced.
Yummy food ! Served in ways which makes your mouth water. The staff are friendly and greet you warmly. Manager is really good too. Food will not disappoint. I look forward to my next visit.
Been a favourite for years...just love the food so good, the shares are great, beef asparagus, scallops, salmon sashim, tuna tatuki and many many more.
I absolutely love everything about this place. The atmosphere- dark and cozy. The service1 welcoming, friendly and accomodating. The food- absolutely delicious. What a hidden little gem this place is. Never disappoints! Coeliac friendly and in the entertainment book also!!
Absolutely delicious food! Great service and friendly staff! Good to go in a group so you can order lots of different items on the menu. You have to try the Chicken Salad.... So yummy!!!
This place is amazing, the atmosphere is great, the employees are friendly as well. I love the sushi which they serve here, it's a great fusion restaurant. Highly recommend!!
This Japanese place was prettttyyyy yum! We ordered the aburi sushi, chicken katsu salad and duck gyoza. The chicken in the salad was so juicy and the wonton crisps complimented the salad so well. The duck gyoza was juicy and the dipping sauce was sensational. The aburi sushi was pretty tasty as well, except it took 40 minutes to come out.

Get the salmon sashimi bites. They are delicious. Also recommend the cheesy pork Katsu. A good dinning option for sharing with friends. Amazing customer service. Bonsai seats 175 people! It's very cool but a bit darker then I would prefer and the seats are oddly short & thats coming from someone 4"11.
Lots of bang for your buck!
Loved this place when it first opened and I still love it now! Whenever we visit, we prefer to skip mains and just order a bunch of entree/small dishes so we get to try all the beautiful creations these guys have.
The food is fresh and always has amazing flavor combinations that makes you go back for more. A stand out for me has always been their salmon sashimi bites... delicious! The team is attentive and friendly but not over the top which is great. Well priced menu too.
Good job Team Bonsai! Oh but please bring back the chargrilled squid to your menu soon!
Food rocks ambiance sucks
Have dined in the is restaurant on numerous occasions, and have always enjoyed the quality and inventiveness of the menu. The seafood (Scallops) are one of the strong points of the kitchen, but nevertheless most dishes I have tried have been excellent. The fit out is somber, and the high ceilings make the space voluminous which has not been addressed by the choice of color, or fittings. Hence the ambiance is a bit sterile, the situation is not helped by the service staff who mirror this, maybe its a language barrier?. All in all its still worth checking out.
Devine Japanese tapas ! I tried 16 dishes here and they were all really lovely, well presented and timed perfectly. Crunchy chicken salad, fried oysters, Salmon sashimi, crab balls were right up there for me. Just a really delicious feast I shared with family and happy I tried it.
Came to this restaurant last night with my family. I enjoyed the food.
The environment is good for couple or where just the adult gathering. Because the place is way too dark; hard to read the menu😆😆😆
But don't get me wrong, they how to cook. 😊
We had California roll; terayaki chicken; teriyaki Wahyu beef; barramundi fish
All nice
Had two servings of the chicken salad at dinner tonight, ordered another two servings for takeaway and I'm still craving another! I didn't realise a chicken salad could be so so delicious! The Yuzu cocktail was also really refreshing.
Atmosphere was nice and service was good. We had the plumb wine which was very moorish. Food was tasty and well presented though I thought the price was a bit high for what you got. I would rush back.
We visited Bonsai for the second time recently, and were served up with a decent range of delicious Japanese delicacies. The presentation of the food is nice and the quality of food above average. We were a little disappointed with the pork belly the first time we ordered it. It was 80% fat with little to no meat. I think there's better Japanese restaurants in the price range, but bonsai is still a solid choice.
I wasn’t a big fan of sashimi because there were many times in the past that I was served fishy sashimi. After that I didn’t bother to try again and decided to say goodbye to all the 'supposed' goodness of sashimi. Donna was trying to convert me and she mentioned that Bonsai was definitely one of the restaurants to go to for fresh servings of sashimi.
My family arrived right at opening time on a Saturday so it wasn't too crowded or noisy. We were in need of something out of the ordinary. The service was excellent - sincerely friendly and efficient. The food was of a very high standard. The Bonsai certainly did not disappoint. We've found our new favourite "special" restaurant!
Have had a few different varieties of Ramen here over the years. They are super authentic and extremely quick to serve up. It's a pretty sparse sort of establishment though.
The Bonsai Restaurant combines Japanese cuisine with contemporary flavours. It's interior exudes a formality that many other restaurants do not, which makes this place a perfect location for a date night, work colleague dinners or even a more formal birthday dinner. I ordered a set menu which boasted a small bite of the restaurants best delicacies. The food was good, but you do pay a bit more for the quantity you receive. The staff were all very friendly, and catered to our needs for a surprise birthday cake.
My absolute most favourite restaurant in Perth. I've eaten here many many times and it's just all round perfect every time. We've never had a problem
This place has quite attentive staff! Be sure to try the salads with the fried wonton, it gives the salad a flavourful crunch. The restaurant is mellow and a wonderful place to have a small group catch up or a dinner date.
Love this place, great Japanese food and warm atmosphere. Chicken salad, prawn skewers & beef taytaki, all fantastic - Highly recommend! 😋🍴
THE BEST CHINESE IN TOWN! !

Love this place. Warm Saki on a cold night chased down with a Sapporo. The wagyu beef strips are heavenly and I always go for the squid. Have always had a consistent good experience. Missus is an expert cook..she says in a good bechamel sauce the herbs should be indistinguishable. The creamy prawn spring rolls' herbs were a tad strong.
And yes, the Chinese part. .:)) I know. .
My wife and I came here for the first time on Saturday night and would definitely recommend this as place to go for modern Japanese. We shared 6 entree size dishes and 1 mains. Of these there were three standout dishes of the night. From the entrees, the Wagyu beef tataki was utterly delicious, and the niku-jaga was a real pleasure to eat, being a suitable comfort dish to accompany this recent cold weather. The caramelised duck for our mains however was our favourite dish of the night.
The other entrees were ok but weren't up to the standard of the others we ordered. The oysters sashimi oysters were a little bit bitter and the saltiness of the dish overpowered any competing flavours. I enjoyed the octopus but found the sauce a bit overpowering as well. Unfortunately the crab claws were very bland and needed the accompanying cajun sauce (which was lovely I might add) to bring it to life.
Also worth mentioning the friendly and professional service, in a relaxed and friendly venue.
We always enjoy eating out at Bonsai the service is good and we like the variety of small share dishes as we like to try a bit of everything. Stand out dishes for us are the Scallops they are incredible I could eat a whole plate to myself and the Salmon & Scallop Sashimi. I also really enjoy the Crispy Chicken Salad. This recent dining experience we also tried the Tempura Fish - beautiful light batter it was lovely. The Soft Shell Crab - didn't have much flavour, I found the Wasabi dipping sauce over powering. The Agedashi Tofu was ok but not as good as their Eggplant Agedashi. Always an enjoyable experience and will continue to come back.
Bloody good feed. Great service. Thanks Isaac we had a great evening out, our thanks to you and your staff. This was our third visit to The Bonsai Restaurant and again very happy all around. A bit expensive but no more so than other similar quality restaurants and as far as i'm concerned for a qualty dinner for the cost, beats Nobu hands down. We'll be back for more.
Love coming to bonsai for contemporary Japanese. The fit out is great. Phone ahead and make a booking to try their set menu which is really delicious and filling and perfect when you are dining with a large group. Good choice of plum / yuzu wines on offer here too.
The moment you walk in the door, you are greeted with smiles from all the staff. The staff are all professionally trained to a high standard. Excellent service.
The food is ALWAYS well presented. Looks and smells amazing.
The Creamy Prawn Spring Rolls and Salmon Sushimi are a must try. They are so full of flavour, it leaves you wanting more and more.
I highly recommend the Teriyaki Wagyu Beef Steak. I have ordered this dish 50+ times and not once has it disappointed me. The steak is presented in bite size pieces with the sauce drizzled around and it just melts in your mouth. Slightly crisp on the outside and so tender on the inside. Cooked to perfection every time.
My wife and I eat out about 4 times a week at different restaurants and I would honestly say The Bonsai is on the top of my list.
Must try the legendary Teriyaki Wagyu, service is great, also all entrees are excellent, and a good selection of wine. A bit pricey but all worth it
Lovely mood and great service. The takoyaki and soft shell crab were the better dishes, however there were no fresh oysters available (and we arrived at the start of the night). We ordered six dishes in total, which was more than enough, I recommend five between two people.
We love this place, my friend and I are frequent visitors of this wonderful restaurant. The staff and genuine and welcoming. The food is delightful! An absolute must is the mushroom miso soup.
Good service provided by the staff, food was good. Recommended dishes: crab claws, salmon, and créme brûlée for dessert! Food was served pretty quickly
Great Japanese food, however it is a bit of a wait on the food.
Fantastic food one of the best Japanese restaurants we've been to by far, and to top it off exceptional service. Get the set menu as its amazing value and unlike many other Japanese restaurants it leaves you very full, with good serves of meat portions for the main satisfy your hunger!
The environment is excellent and the staff is friendly. But the food is not very impressive considering we spent $55/ppl (25% off with entertainment book) for a two-ppl only set.
Went to Bonsai for the first time recently. We very much enjoyed the $40 set menu which was generous, tasty and good value. Would recommend!
Contemporary Japanese dining experience. Dishes are meant to be shared. There was a lovely romantic ambience, friendly staff and great service. The highlight dishes of the night for me were: the chicken salad (not pictured) with the crunchy wonton bits (extra) which adds texture to the dish and the sashimi bites served on a witlof leaf – very fresh and moreish. The flavours of the dishes were well balanced. Main courses were ok but I definitely preferred the entrees. Desserts were great. I was won over by the various green tea desserts. Food is a bit on the pricier side but yummy. Bonsai is in the Entertainment Book with a 25% off the total bill voucher. I would return here again for a special occasion.
This restaurant is so wonderful. I have been here quite a few times now and always save it for the special occasions. If you like a bit of a sweet alcohol beverage definitely try the plum drink.
Favourite Japanese restaurant. Have been here many times and food has always been very nice. Service is good too. Would recommend this place.
Outstanding! Beautifully done out restaurant, felt luxurious but not pretentious. The service was second to none, very friendly fast and attentive. We ordered about 6 dishes between two of us and shared each. All were presented beautifully and tasted incredible. You can really tell that the chef puts a lot of thought, care and time into each dish. Highly recommend!
Absolutely amazing food! Did not disappoint. Went here for my 3 year anniversary with my fiancé and received complimentary wine from Isaac! Definitely will be returning. Food you must have is the Sashimi Spoon, Beef Asparagus, Chicken Salad & Waygu Teriyaki Beef! Only disappointed at no more Green Tea Mousse :( Also excellent service!
Food is perfection! The beef and asparagus dish is a must try, and the chicken salad and deserts are amazing! Actually the best dinner I've ever had... :)
Had dinner here last night and it was nice. The food was very good but it wasn't amazing. I found it a bit pricey too but overall I enjoyed it
We came here as a big group. I have never eaten there but it was really yummy! Food is pricey but really yum!! Definitely worth a try and I am looking forward to go back again!
Quite a pleasant surprise as my husband and I have never ate here before though the food was great and their prices were good, very happy with the service
This is the first time we have been here and I am a huge fan now. We ordered the caramelised duck and the BBQ unagi; the only thing I can say is "I am in heaven". Super delicious. The agadashi tofu is a bit of let down as I have tested one better. If you love sushi, this is one of the place to get a really good sushi. Service is great, the staffs are friendly.
Excellent service and very catering to a vegan dinner. The owner is amazing and makes sure you get tips on how to best enjoy all the flavours and textures of your meal. 10/10 would recommend!!
The food and service is amazing. Try the sparkling wine with plum and jello. The hot dishes to share are great - try the seared scallop and miso ginger squid. Loved it
I went to this place on a Saturday night with a group of 9 others. I have already been to this place twice before. This time we chose the to go with the $40 pp banquet menu.
The food came out quickly plate after plate. It was very tasty and the banquet allowed for tasting a bit of everything particularly if you're the indecisive type. The only thing I would change would be the teriyaki rice. It was served at the end of most of the dishes so you really had to eat it on its own, which can be a bit plain if you're relying on the sauce.
Service was friendly and atmosphere was great and wasn't too noisy. We ordered the sake to share as well.
The amount of food was adequate but would have been nice to finish with a dessert as part of the banquet.
The set up of bonsai is elegant and simple, very Japanese of course. The food is authentic and delicious. The range of sake is OK, they have 4 types. The range of Japanese beers is limited to about 3, would love to see more of both. The deserts we tried (Creme Brulee and Choc/Peanut Butter Slice) were very average and not really recommend.
Overall a nice place, just need to work on the desert and drink menu.
We phoned late arvo on Friday night and got a table for 8.30. The table was the worst in the restaurant in terms of ambience, but that's fine. The food was delicious, but came out quite slowly. We had a very meat-heavy meal - the beef carpaccio, takoyaki, cheesy pork thingy, pork belly, and the torched salmon nigiri which was amazing. Everything was small, so we went and ate some waffles after too. Would go again!
Was blown away by how attentive and polite the staff were at bonsai. This alongside the amazing food made for a fantastic dining experience. Would definitely recommend the caramel soy duck, a stand out piece amongst other delicious options. Will definitely return!
Beautiful food - we went for $49 share plates - delicious, fresh, flavoursome, absolutely loved it! Decent amounts too, you won't leave hungry!
I love this place and Go regularly (at least monthly). The food is consistently great. Byo on Wednesday night is a nice touch too. 2 thumbs up!
After 15+ visits, as a couple or with friends, we've never been disappointed. Generally, we graze on starters and leave happy and content. Some may consider the cost too pricey, but for the quality, I disagree. Will continue to return and recommend.
Friendly and exceptional service and an intimate atmosphere - dim lighting, candles and a contemporary restaurant design. Perfect for a date night! The food is really delicious, fresh and flavoursome. I like how from where we were sitting there was a nice close up of the CBD buildings/lights and could see and hear the chefs cooking away. I had the vegetarian sushi, agedashi tofu, tempura sweet potato and mushrooms and the eggplant and red capsicum namuru. The only muddle was that the namuru was a bit too saucy and salty for me but otherwise it was really delicious! The food is very satiating yet light. Will be returning here on the regular.
Another pre-theatre favourite. Great seafood salad and love all the small plates I've tried which are perfect for sharing. Great date spot too.
Excellent service and stylish decor coupled with exquisite Japanese cuisine and sake.
The set menus offer balance of flavours and correctly sized portions.
I've never written a restaurant review before but I feel compelled to, given what a great dinner experience we had last Saturday night. It was my birthday and I organised for 15 people to have the $49 per person function menu. It was fabulous! There were nine different entrees to share – everyone had their favourite but the octopus balls (takoyaki) and chilli crab claws were notable. Three people didn’t eat red meat and they were provided with separate (excellent) entrees. The mains were also fantastic – the barramundi was excellent and by all accounts so were the others. Every single person has told me how much they enjoyed the food and they all plan to return. It was truly some of the best Japanese food I have eaten. The food came out at a good pace and we never felt rushed (or hungry!).
The staff were professional, helpful, friendly and efficient. I phoned and emailed with dietary requirements and always received rapid and helpful replies. We brought a birthday cake and they happily provided serving plates (and lit the candles ☺ Thanks so much for making the evening so enjoyable!
BTW, I had never been to Bonsai before but chose them because most of the restaurants that I thought would be good didn't take bookings/were expensive etc. I am very glad that I did!
Great food but arrived disappointed. Firstly its important to say I really like The Bonsai. It's top of the list for date night BUT when I called a week in advance to request a particular table for 2 then arrived to an empty restaurant (early dinner) and saw another couple sitting at it I was disappointed. The waitress told me the manager did not like catering to table requests so I wasn't given the table...please listen to requests, it was a simple and reasonable one and started our night off negative. Luckily as usual the food was delish, the little mug of niku-jaga cottage pie is really good and you shouldn't plan on sharing (its too good) the prawn kushi-yaki with caramel soy is a great flavour combo of sweet and salty. Generally we stick to the share plates and get 6-8 between 2. Next time we'll skip the pork belly as very chewy but we left satisfied.
Great food and service. I went to Bonzai with our family group last night and was not disappointed: The food was as good as I remembered, with the seaweed salad with crispy wontons , seared salmon nigiri the highlights.
The chap who served us was excellent, explaining what each dish was as he brought them out. And a big thanks to him for catching us up outside the restaurant with my jacket that I had left on the back of my chair.
I'll definitely be back.
Went here on a fri night- decor, lighting, atmosphere all good.
The service was great and the food exceptional ... Mmm so good I would go again in an instant!! Agedashi eggplant and chilli crab claw were standout. Only negative was the food came out too quickly in succession (we ordered 8 share plates) would have preferred more time between dishes.
Overall was a fantastic meal

OMG!!!!!. I have one word to describe this place... Perfect!!! Perfect food, perfect service, perfect atmosphere. This is the first time that I have been here and I will be back again and again. The chicken salad with wontons was absolutely amazing, the food came out so quickly and the staff were so quick and friendly. Will recommend to everyone!
The best service we have experienced. We had read reviews leading up to dining here, and we had hopeful expectations. Those expectations were exceeded by far.
The food was amazing. We ordered a combination of sushi, and hot share plates, and each dish was extremely fresh and delicious.
The best part about the evening was the service. Smiles all around, and when each dish arrived, an explanation of all the food was given. A very special mention to Isaac, the floor manager who served us. He made our night here a memorable one, and we will definitely be back.
Brilliant! The food was exquisite and priced well.
Last year attended the restaurant with a table of six. The food was tapas but we all left full satisfied. Seriously some of the tastiest food I have ever eaten and the best part, including drinks it only cost us $40 a head.
Highly recommend this restaurant.
Go there once a year or so and it's spot on every time.
A difficult review to write today. Dining here on a Saturday night, we were looking forward to this place. We adore Japenese food so after the great reviews were ready to be wowed.
We weren't wowed.
First world problem I know, but everything was just OK. I think though that this has more to do with the ambience on the place. Large, dark, quiet, cavernous and concrete, the atmosphere detracted from the entire experience.
Best thing about the whole place was the company - and that left with me.
We will be back!. My friend and I came here for dinner after work, the staff and host are exceptionally warm people and the food was glorious to match. We had mains but will be back for tapas next time.
First time (also used Entertainment Card)...Brilliant! Crispy Chicken Salad a must, Beef Tataki fresh and delicious and the Chilli Crab claw had so much crab meat within, delicious! Service was second to none and nice industrial chic interior....we eat at a lot of Japanese restaurants and would highly recommend it...we'll be back!
Just had an incredible dinner at The Bonsai Restaurant tonight. We shared a few different plates and each was delicious and well presented. The service was excellent and staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable on their dishes. Would recommend to anyone!
Delicious. Absolutely delicious food! Great range of dishes to choose from.
Everything I tried was flavourful and the service was quick.
Will definitely be visiting again!
Great Japanese!!. Probably in our top most delicious Japanese restaurants in Perth! Crispy wonton salad was great! Staff were friendly and the atmosphere is quite relaxed. Great place for dinner and a drink!
I came here with a friend for dinner & we were blown away. The wait staff were friendly & attentive but not overbearing. When we asked how many things to share between us - we were not encouraged to order more than we'd need, but to start with a few things and see how we go. Such a nice change from being pushed into buying more than we need. The food was all exceptional and the prices were very reasonable. I can't wait to go back!
Beautiful food, fantastic service. Dined 221014 (Tuesday night)
Service was impeccable, not over the top, but very attentive. Ambience was fantastic, the only thing I found odd was the restaurant was half empty (only 3 tables left) by 8.15pm! Come on Perth, when we have these amazing restaurants, why would you stay home for a ham & cheese toastie?!
We knew we wanted the Pan Seared Scallops, but asked to be surprised from the kitchen for the rest of the shared dishes. We specified no meat, and; being the highly cultured people we are asked for no raw dishes. The following dishes were bought to our table:
Tempura Whiting
Prawn & Lobster Tartare
Cajun Spiced Baby Squid
All delicious, but I have to say the standout favourite was the pan seared scallops - literally just melted in my mouth.
I have to also make mention of the good price, very reasonable for the size and quality of the dishes.
Keep up the beautiful food and great service guys, we will be back.
Amazing. The food was delicious and made me smile every time it came to our table. Service was pleasing and prompt. But what I love most about the Bonsai is the gorgeous, contemporary interior and the relaxing mood and atmosphere. It made my dining experience much more pleasurable thank you very much!!
Very pleasant experience. Waitstaff were attentive and polite. Lovely ambiance.
Highly recommend the Teriyaki Steak. Sauce was delicious and steak was cooked beautifully.
Amazing food, Amazing service!
Highly recommend for any occasion. Set menus are great value!
Aburi Salmon Nigiri 5eva
+5
The Aburi Salmon Nigiri is always AMAZING. I order two serves because 6 pieces of heaven just isn't enough. Their salmon and asparagus is also really good. I've tried a number of other sharing dishes and have usually enjoyed them, but I just can't not get the aburi salmon nigiri. Hands down the best nigiri in Perth. If they ever take this off the menu or if bonsai closes down, I will be inconsolable.
Can't fault the place. Huge place with lovely higher end sort of japanese food. Really love coming here for the friendly and open atmosphere. Great sort of tapas japanese food but always filling.
Went there Saturday and couldn't fault it. Staff very attentive, food great and good price.
Great food and service. We went as a group of 5 on a Thursday night for a girls get together. Having never eaten Japanese cuisine before I was inexperienced with dishes. Our waiter was very helpful in explaining the menu and making suggestions. We had the $49 set menu with gave us a variety of starters, around 9 and all were fantastic. Really delicious, fresh and creative. With the set menu we then had a choice of 1 of 4 mains. We all loved the dishes we chose. The restaurant allowed BYO wine on the night we were there (not on weekends) and also was in the Entertainment Book which gave a nice discount. I can highly recommend the Bonsai Restaurant for its food, service and value. would definitely go back again.
Amazing food, loved the variety and great service. Would love to go back!
Most amazing service! So accommodating to my gluten free allergies and were more then happy to alter the food if needed. The food is absolutely amazing, and well priced for the quality of it! One of the best customer service experience ever had!
Will definitely be back!
Scallops, Tuna, Crispy Chicken, Squid....and a beer to wash it down... This place was spot on....service 100 % loved it
Love it!. Great, consistent service and food every time. Our booking was misplaced once but they seated us anyway on a Friday evening. Will be going back again and again and recommending to everyone we know.
Great tapas style Japanese food. Love this restaurant, so many vegetarian options. By far the best Agedashi tofu I've ever had and the mushrooms are unbelievably tender and everything is served with amazing sauces and garnishes. Lots of different things to try and enough to share. I very much recommend the seaweed salad with the crunchy wonton skins, I've never been so excited to eat a salad at a restaurant!
CANNOT RAVE ENOUGH! I LOVE Bonsai, the service is never lacking. Attentive waitstaff, always friendly and they remember us (my partner and I) when we come back. Cajun baby squid, butter soy clams and creamy prawn spring rolls - I always have to get 2 serves of these. I love the authentic Asian flavours and modern twists. I could happily dine here every weekend.
Bonsai! I love you! I've been coming here for about 3 years now I think. I'm a tough one to impress but it is SO nice to sit down in an environment where the staff don't look and sound like they hate their lives! Apart from that, of course the restaurant manager is fantastic at what he does and the food is and always has been, freakin out of this world. I bring pretty much everyone I know to Bonsai because you really can't beat it!
A place to go when looking for something different. I have been to Bonsai twice and enjoyed it both times. Good staff and good food. not the type of food I will want all the time or on common basis but good to have from time to time.
Thanks Bonsai!. After leaving Pleased to meet you (what a joke) we tried this nearby modern japanese restaurant and we were really happy with the service and the food, especially the honey soy pork spare ribs YUM.
Oishi. I had the two way chicken and it was delicious. The chicken was moist and very tasty. I would have liked a little bit more of the guacamole and cherry tomatoes though. Nice decor inside and staff were friendly. Would like to come back and try the share plates next time.
Pleasant. Booked a table for 3 for Saturday night. Was greeted promptly and taken to our table. Cold water was immediately offered. Drinks ordered and came very quickly. Ordered 6 dishes to share, happy with all of them, could not fault anything. Would happily go back.
This a most enjoyable experience and will definitely go back. Relaxed setting great food and service and conducive to easy conversation. Some reviews say it was expensive but I found it to be very reasonable priced especially given the overall experience for example set menu 13 courses at $40 can't argue with that. Can also tailor the courses to suit your taste.
Awesome. Love this place!! Food is great. Service is great. Have been going back again and again :)
Teriyaki Wagyu FTW!. I love Bonsai - polite and efficient service, funky modern interior and delicious food. its a twist from your standard japanese offerings. Never had a mediocre experience let alone a bad one. Always leave super satisfied. Theyre in the entertainment book too so you can get 25% off.
Heaps of choices on the menu consisting of hot entrees, cold entrees, salads, sushi, mains and desserts. I like ordering heaps of small dishes to share. Last time we got super greedy and ordered various entrees to share and a main each. We told them we would share the entrees and they came out within seconds of each other which was good.
We ordered:
Aburi salmon nigiri - flame torched salmon on sushi rice with sticky teriyaki glaze. The flame grilling adds so much flavour and is a nice twist on your regular raw salmon sushi. Love mopping up the extra sticky glaze with the rice
Salmon sashimi on asparagus - super fresh marinated raw salmon with chilli mayo over asparagus. Nice but not out of this world
Salmon sashimi bites (we really like salmon) - this one was better than the previous one... better texture. Diced salmon tartare with dressing and aioli in a crunchy leaf. Flavoursome bite.
pork belly kakuni - chunks of pork belly braised in a red wine and soy stock. Very tender and melts in your mouth but i prefer a pork belly with a crispy crackling
chilli cuttlefish fry - whole little baby squid in a spicy batter with spicy mayo. Anything with mayo is a win in my eyes
We didnt get any salads cuz you dont make friends with salad.
I am in LOVE with their teriyaki wagyu steak and i pretty much convinced the other 3/5 people to order it as well and none of us were disappointed. I get it every time i come here. Good quality, tender marbled wagyu sirloin in the most delicious buttery teriyaki sauce ever. It's buttery but its not a creamy sauce and its not greasy either. Best thing on their menu. All mains are served with rice.
Diner 5 got the eggplant and red capsicum namaru which is grilled with a slighty sweet miso glaze. I tried some and it was delicious.
Diner 6 got the unagi (bbq eel) and it looked like standard eel you can get at other jap restaurants.
We were too stuffed for desserts but on this occasion i wandered over to the dessert cabinet to see if i could be swayed but it was empty.
Excellent service. A bit overpriced for the serving sizes. Although the food was amazing and the service was efficient, prompt and not overbearing. Lacking a bit in atmosphere, but we would definitely eat here again. Probably better for a group meal rather than a romantic dinner.
Customer service was wonderful. The food was sensational and I will definitely be going back. Thank you!
Went here for dinner last and it was one of the best dining experiences I've had. Restaurant manager was brilliant, attentive & knowledgable. The food was delicious, fresh and flavoursome. It was an excellent experience all round & i would recommend this restaurant to everyone!
Amazing value for money! Friendly waiters and delicious food (and sake!)
Delicious!. Dined here last night with a friend. Didn't realize the venue was so big!
Service was great and food was beautiful.
We ordered the creamy prawn spring rolls, chicken sushi, beef tataki and salmon sashimi. All were delicious! Can't wait to go back!
Second Time Round. Went to Bonsai for the second time on Saturday night with a group of friends and had the set course menu. The food was incredibly good. It came to the table quickly and the servings were enough for the taste, but not too much for on the tummy. We ordered the Chicken Salad with Crispy Wonton Skins again because once just wasn't enough! Yummy. The service was good and the education we received with regard to Saki was splendid (as was the Saki!), so we had a different Saki with every course. The MD remembered me, in spite of having been there only once a couple of months ago - nice touch. Will be taking the family some time over Christmas.
Brought my family there after reading good reviews of the restaurant! What a lovely dinner! Service was good and good was superb! Highly recommended! We went for the tasting plates @$49 per person and my teenagers wolfed everything down saying how yummy everything was! We will definitely return for more! Oh the chicken salad was divine!!!
Great soft shell crab and Sake. Went to Bonsai for lunch today after reading promising reviews on Urbanspoon. I was not disappointed as the food (and Sake and Asashi Beer) were awesome. The servings were a little smaller than I expected, but the quality and freshness could not be faulted.
We started with Asparagus wrapped in beef, which was melt in the mouth. Next we had Salmon bites, which were delicious, though petite in size. Lastly we had tempura soft shell crab with wasabi mayonaise, which was a generous size (4 crab halves) and we liked it so much, we ordered another batch.
I would definitely return.

Brilliant. Four of us at at Bonzai last night. There was so much to love about it - food, ambiance, servive and wine selection to name a few.
Our waiter deserves special mention for helping me select food based on intolerences. This was greatly appreciated.
I highly recommend Bonzai Restaurant.
Took my friend out to this restaurant on her bday. Ordered salmon bites, beef tataki, tuna tataki, pan fried scallop, soft shell crab and chicken katsu. We loved the food. We were not very impressed with the main menu. Hope there's more to choose next time. And the green tea moose was so nice although the size was too small, I would love the green tea martini to be back on the dessert menu.
Fabulous. We absolutely love this place for it's take on fusion Japanese. It works very well. Everything is delicious and superbly prepared and presented. Flavours combine beautifully. The wait staff is always efficient and friendly. It is the perfect place for a early pre theatre dinner. You can know that you will finish your meal in good time. We cannot speak highly enough about the whole experience at Bonsai. We will return many more times.
A moden Japanese experience.. A fusion of modern Japanese cuisine while trying to stick to traditional flavors and ideals. I love eating here, meals are always artistically structured and flavorsome. However, price tags and portion sizes do not quite match. I always leave not exactly feeling full. On the other hand, the service is great and the restaurant gives off, a somewhat romantic and relaxed atmosphere. Not bad for a Japanese restaurant that is ran by Chinese owners.
English Cricketers Love It Too!. My friends and I had a fantastic dinner at Bonsai for my birthday on a weeknight. Completed booking via email with no issues. Between 5 of us, 3 of us had dietary requirements. While the manager was able to suggest many dishes to suit our needs, we liked him so much we trusted him to order all of our food for us. The food was brilliant, the service was excellent, and the manager even assisted us to liaise with the English Cricket Team a few tables down. Without his help, we would not have had a free bottle of wine sent to our table and we would not have been able to respond with a lip stick kissed napkin. We will definitely be back!
Best kept secret on roe street. Walking around on a Sunday evening in Northbridge looking for somewhere to eat, I was persuaded by my partner in crime to try this place. Although there was a large table of burly boys already eating when we got there about 8pm, the place was relatively quiet once they left. Which was no reflection at all of the quality of food and service. The food was very tasty, well presented, the service was the most outstanding I've had in a long time, from the attention to the temperature of the room to the thoughtful recommendations on what sake would go with our dishes. I was pleasantly surprised to find such quality Japanese food in an odd but cool venue and a very.......well frankly plain sounding restaurant name. Well done to the owners.
Great venue!. Not going to go in depth with this one, but been here multiple times since opening, tried almost everything on the menu and is always my go-to restaurant for a quiet night out with friends!
Awesome. Had a fantastic late dinner here last night and was really impressed with the staff/service! Friendly, engaging and happy to reccomend and explain menu items and Sake (for this first time Sake drinker!) Seaweed Salad, Salmon Sushi, Seared Scallops and Pork Belly were all amazing. Will be back for sure!
Amazing service and food, great atmosphere - highly recommend! We are huge fans of this modern Japanese Australian menu. Great service and location
FANTASTIC. One of my favourite Japanese restaurants in perth! food is always amazingg! and the service is always fantastic! basically love all the dishes there especially the California sushi! so yummy and fresh! and Salmon sashimi bites is also another fav! Cant wait to go back there!!!!
Our fav Japanese restaurant! Fantastic clean eating paired with prompt and friendly customer service. This place is consistently great and I'd recommend it to anyone. Isaac always offers a warm welcome and remembers his patrons. Wish there were more places like this!
This place never disappoints... Hands down the best Japanese in Perth. Isaac and the crew deliver what I consider the best customer service of any restaurant I've been to in perth in the last 15 years. Consistently great, never had a bad experience at bonsai.. Clean, fresh food.. Try the hot prawn spring rolls.. Delilah
Amazing Japanese. My favourite Japanese in Perth.
The food is consistently amazing, and not over priced.
Great venue good vibe for big or small groups.
The seared salmon dish is amazing. Also the cubed salmon sashimi in the cos lettuce cups is my favourite.
Over the top. What do you want me to say, great service, fresh food, comfortable sitting with your privacy for special occasion. This is the best Japanese restaurant in Perth.
Good value for money. Very good food and service. Reasonable prices. Ambience a bit lacking and seems to be targetted at the "Night out in Northbridge" crowd. Wine list needs to be improved to match the quality of the food as it too seems to be targetted at the "night out" crowd.
After a first experience here, I will be back!!!! We had a waiter who answered any of out questions with charm and knowledge. We ordered share dishes and there was nothing that didn't disappoint. Scallops, pork belly, prawns and squid just had so much flavour and contrast.
In one word....AMAZING!!!!
Favourite Japanese restaurant to dine in. I'm a regular diner here. Food is amazing, service is good and menu has all my favorites. Recommend this place.
Alright food, done in a fusion sort of fashion. Nice twist on jap food, not really amazing, but nice.
Surprisingly great. Didn't have high expectations, but was pleasantly surprised.. Couldn't fault the place, and the staff member that looked after us was wonderful. I'll be back sometime soon.
Dab place in the city. I have been here a few times and it has quickly become my favorite restaurant in Perth. While a little on the pricey side. The service and quality of food defiantly make it worth it. If yo are a fan of Japanese food then this is a must try.
Never disappointed. I'm blown away at how consistent these guys are with their service and delicious food. I've been back many times and on each occasion have walked away with with a full belly and a note in mind to come again.
Beautiful place!. The way the venue is set out is fantastic - it's a little rustic and has a warehouse sort of feel, but it is very nice. The food is absolutely amazing! The staff are well informed and extremely welcoming. Pricing is reasonable as well. We shared a variety of the hot, cold & fried shares: salmon sashimi bites, red wine pork belly kakuni, takoyaki, creamy prawn spring-rolls and oyster panko - all so fresh and yummy! I would not hesitate to return
Wonderful Experience. The service was fantastic, there was always a person out to serve us when we ordered. The food came out pretty quick. The chicken salad with crispy wonton was definitely my favourite. For dessert I requested via email that they wrote a message for my cousin's birthday on the plate which they did and that was a pleasant surprise for my cousin. Overall a wonderful experience at a restaurant with a great atmosphere and lovely staff members. Definitely coming back :)
Brilliant!. Came to Bonsai in a large group (15 people) and had a great time! We had one of the 'function' set menus which had a great selection of entrees and choice of main meal. Amazing food, fantastic staff and great atmosphere!
Yummi Pork Belly. Loved the food in particular the pork belly. Thanks
Fabulous experience. Booked a 40th birthday with the crew at Bonsai. Totally professional outfit, confirmed my reservation, great timely service on the night and sensational food. 20 in the group and everyone loved it. Had banquet "A" and highly recommend it. Overall great night, thanks to the Bansai crew.
Love it. Great food!!! great service, despite they didn't fill up our tea. Meant to go to another Jap restaurant but found out they are close on Sunday. But it turned out fantastic and love every single dish.
Sake Spice. I love this place. Staff, ambience, décor, food (including the sweets). It's all here. Oh, and did I mention the sake?
Delicious. I've only been to the Bonsai twice. The food has improved since my first visit when the restaurant first opened. I loved the sashimi spoons and the sashimi bites. The salmon was fresh and spot on. Service was wonderful, the waitress was very friendly and helpful. Try the green tea mousse, its amazing!
The best Japanese ever! Love the tapas style dishes, amazing.
Loved it. Love the ambience of this place, great service only bettered by the food. Not the cheapest but hey you get what you pay for. Will be back soon
Great setting, great service, great food! Not the cheapest but hey you get what you pay for!
Great food and nice place. Went there for a casual dinner and a birthday dinner last month. The food were very good both times.
I have to say, the portions are very small but you get to try a variety of dishes if you're willing to spend a little bit more.
Will go back for sure.
Ate here last week. Like the room. Soothing cool and comfy. Room to breathe. Food good but not really Japanese although it does say its fusion. Perhaps we need to be more selective in our choices to ensure a more Japanese flavour. Would recommend it. Not overly expensive either which is always an unusual treat in Perth!
Best feed in Perth!. I can't recommend this restaurant enough. Hands down my favourite place to eat in Perth. I highly recommend going with a group of at least four people and ordering one of the banquet menu's. Such great value for money and the food is absolute perfection. My friends and I plan our 'Bonsai' nights weeks in advance. We're addicted. Great food, great service, lovely staff and a really nice ambience. 10/10
Went here for the first time on Saturday night and will absolutely be back! Everything we ate was so delicious and wine was beautiful! Service was fast and super polite and informed. Loved it and can't wait to go back!
Love, love, loved it!!. We had excellent service and the food was delicious - I've never really been a massive fan of Japanese but I will definitely be coming back to Bonsai.
Excellent restaurant. I love this restaurant, whenever I am in Perth I never fail to eat there. I love the banquet menu where they serve several dishes and a main. All the dishes were so good that I dream of it even back in Singapore. Hope they will expand to Singapore one day•. I am sure the que will stretch for miles..
What a fab dining venue - loved the ambience and fabulous service! I enjoyed the Agadashi tofu and teriyaki Pategonian tooth fish and loved them. Great spot for a meal before catching a performance at Black Swan Theatre and you get 10% off the bill!
What service should be like. What made me want to bother about writing a review was the young manager/duty supervisor, who took care of ordering all our food for us (as 6 people agreeing on shared dishes can often be a slow nightmare) making the whole experience so much more enjoyable. Food was brought out quickly but adequately staggered, with the manager coming up after every second or third dish to check how we were going, if he was making the right choices (spot on every time, each dish was fantastic and a good range of everything) and ensuring we weren't getting overfed.
No wasting 20 hungry minutes at the start of the meal deciding on how much food is enough to feed everyone, whilst waiting for the whole table to scour the entire menu. Why don't more restaurants provide this amazing service!
One of the best restaurants in perth. Not your place if you are looking for authentic japanese, but this place is excellent. Great ambience, great food, great service... Aburi Salmon Nigiri is absolutely gorgeous and is my favourite. I also enjoyed the seaweed salad, crab claws, beef tataki, salmon with asparagus... Unfortunately the panko oysters and the mushrooms didn't wow me... I suggest you order multiple plates to share rather than having the mains.
Lovely service and food. Th.... Lovely service and food.
The soft shell crab has to be my favourite then it's the sashimi with the asparagus the sauce to it is amazing
The best Japanese with flair! Plus added bonus it's byo!
Yummy!. Great food, great service liked the design of the adjacent room! Being 6 foot however the chairs where too low and made for a mildly uncomfortable seating experience, would not recommend for elderly patrons.
One of the best restaurants in perth. Delicious food, good prices, great atmosphere. love it every time!
One of my favourite places to eat. It never disappoints and always great service.
A winner again! Thanks for your fantastic food and service on my birthday. Loved it!
Very cool place. Great service! Everyone was very friendly and helpful, and always smiled. The food was great. We ordered some japanese standards - Teriyaki chicken, salmon sushi, another chicken dish, and one more interesting dish which was pan fried mushroom in a wasabi-miso sauce which was delicious! The chicken was cooked perfectly and all the sake we ordered was also very tasty. The waitress was knowledgable about the different types of sake and which dishes they will work with, which was of great help. The presentation of the food was also spectacular!
Will be returning!
Fantastic night out with the girls, gorgeous food, good reisling, (will give the sake a miss next time though, still not my thing), couldn't fault it!
Funky warehouse feel, prompt service, and the food! Waygu beef with caramel soy, tempura squid & beef wrapped asparagus were all highlights!
Sashimi Lovers Dream. Love love loved the sashimi here, particularly the Tuna Tataki on avocado. Flavours are simple yet delicious. Staff are friendly. We came with a large group so pretty much ordered the whole menu! I'd give the mushrooms a miss and I didn't really like the pork ribs but the rest comes highly recommended.
Amazing. We love this place!
being people who never eat raw/cold products (meats/fish etc) we thought we would try 2 of the raw share serves here, being the salmon sashimi and wagyu tataki, to see my partner who wont eat a steak anything less than a medium wow at the raw wagyu, this turned a new page in a food experience! not to down talk to salmon which i found just a tad more desired, the flavor on a full mouthful is amazing...and the excitement doesn't stop there, the mains were as good as anything we've had, the premium teriyaki wagyu main was the best steak i've ever had (i love steaks and jump at any new place i see) , service was great too, will be visiting this place again!
Just love this place! Service, food ambience all tops, and having dined there this evening with a very fussy friend, I once again was not disappointed! Guys, keep it up, it's a rare and precious thing you have there!
This restaurant is one of my favorites in Perth. Food is always fantastic and the price is very reasonable. I highly recommend Bonsai to anyone looking for a relaxed meal & bonus is it is BYO on Tues & Wed night..
The Tapas are simply amazing, with the favourites including the miso scallops and creamy prawn spring rolls. The mains however are very disappointing. Ambience was great and staff friendly enough. Overall a great restaurant, just stay away from the main selections and stick to the tapas.

Omg this place was good! it have great service, Delicious food, and the restaurant was lovely. could of eaten everything on the menu. cant wait to go back. plus got a free wine because it was my birthday.
DELICIOUS. Great ambience, great food, smallish portions but the presentation makes up for this. I go back again and again.
I have been to the Bonsai for dinner several times now and I absolutely love it! They have a delicious sharing menu and it is not too expensive by Perth standards (especially with an entertainment card). I would really recommend the salmon sashimi bites and the chilli crab claw.
Service is good and the atmosphere is great, it is nice and relaxed and the perfect place to catch up over dinner.
This is a quality restaurant every dish was better than the last great service and polite friendly staff I would eat here again
Two thumbs up! After hearing great reviews we decided to check out 'Bonsai' in Northbridge.
I quite like Japanese food but I wouldn't say it's my favourite cuisine so I must say i was a bit hesitant.
Arriving at the restaurant we were pleasantly greeted and shown to our table by the wait staff.
I couldn't help but have a sneaky look at the food the other tables where eating and it looked and smelled GOOD!
We started by ordering a bottle of the house sparkling (which for a house wine was pretty decent) and a Bullet can of Sapporo beer for myself.
After having a look at the menu we chose 4 tapas to begin with. We chose a mix of hot, fried and fresh tapas. It was hard to choose a stand out as they were all amazing but i highly recommend the pan seared scallops and the prawn kushi-yaki skewers. These first couple of dishes had us salivating for more so we ordered another 4 tapas, one being another order of the seared scallops. Yep they are that good! Another stand out from the second order would have to be the Aburi salmon nigiri a lightly flamed sashimi.
All the tapas dishes come in servings of 4-9 pieces which was perfect for a group of four like ours. I found Bonsai to be a great modern Japanese restaurant serving up fresh and tasty food at an affordable price. Highly recommended!
Went there with a bunch of friends and ordered mainly hot shares, nibbles and shared a few mains together. A bit pricey for the tiny size, we were very careful sharing portions. However the atmosphere was great, staff was very attentive, food was delicate and well, flavoured and presented.
YUM!. Chicken Teriyaki & creamy prawn spring rolls are amazing!
Cute little restaurant & good priced meals.
Lovely staff :)
A favourite. Delicious tapas, interesting options and well priced. Nice atmosphere and good service. One of my favourites of 2012.
Brilliant, next time ask the owner for his recommendations, solid food, attentive service. No complains full stop.
Great Food. But Very Pricey!!. Have been here many times now for the excellent food. However it is very pricey for the portion sizes.
Always an amazing meal at Bonsai! Tonight we shared the chilli crab claws, duck, scallops, beef wrapped asparagus, seaweed salad with crispy wonton skins, the prawn skewers, honey pork ribs, Cajun sliced squid and a miso soup each. Fabulous. Each and every dish.
Sensational food!! The wasabi sauce and the soft shell crab and the tuna tataki, in fact all the food was excellent. Great meal, good service!!
Amazing - nothing more to say
Excellent all rounder two thumbs up. Decore - Check
Service - Check
Ambience - Check
Quality - Check
Variety - Check
All round a great place to dine with exceptional service from Isaac and his staff. Everyone knows their role and executes it with precision and a smile.
Food is excellently presented and fresh.
I have no problems bringing my family and friends for meals or entertaining clients.
Personal favs:
Fried Chicken
Salmon Sashimi bites
Prawn Tempura salad with Wonton Chips
Teri Steak Alex special
Wow, This was the best Japanese food I've ever had! Charming atmosphere very attentive waitstaff. The food is delicate and incredibly flavorful. I suggest the salmon nigiri and the waygu beef tetaki but I bet it's all delicious. When can I return! :)
Love the food. I absolutely love the food here! the dim lights also gives the place a good atmosphere and environment.
I had some trouble the other night though, we had asked for some wine but it took 3 waitresses to get it for us because the first 2 didn't understand.
Had the Aburi Salmon, it took so long to arrive to the table, asked for no wassabi, but it came with wassabi anyway which was a shame, but the taste is amazing
We also asked one of the waitresses for desert after we had our mains. It took a while for it to come out. So a different waitress came and asked what we wanted because the other waitress also did not understand.
i think they might have some new waitresses that don't really understand english well, But they're lovely.
Overall we had a great time and really enjoyed the food. Will definitely go back again!
Best japagnese in Perth!!!!! I love this restaurant have been over 10 times and I love the consistency in knowing the food is going to be great every time and so is the service.
Just had a fantastic meal. Let the guys feed us and just never missed. Food to die for. Service spot on.
Friendly and welcoming service. The food was fresh and very tasty. They happily catered to my friends request when she asked for something to be made that was not on the menu. Great atmosphere.
From the moment we walked through the doors to the moment we left, the service could not be faulted. Very friendly, helpful and knowledgable staff. The food is amazing. We opted for a mix of 6 starters which all were delivered with exceptional quality. The sizing of the dishes were very reasonable and the price matched fittingly. One of the best dinner spots in Perth. Well worth the visit. JB

Excellent. The food, service and decor at The Bonsai are all exceptional. There is plenty of choice on the menu and even the desserts are impressive. There is also a comfy loung area to begin with cocktails or to retire to for after dinner. Go try it!

Very good miso. Service was excellent and the prawn tempura was not too crunchy or too soft. Perfect for my birthday.
Very impressed with the bonsai, nice and comfortable, service was promt and professional, and the food was really really good! Tried 7 dishes there, hot and cold- all were very tasty, fave dish would have to be the wagu beef tataki! Not bad prices either (for Perth).
Food was amazing and service was fantastic. We went on a Friday night, so restaurant was busy. We were offered drinks within 2 minutes and they arrived within 5. Service for food was also great. We decided on the share menu, which I would highly recommend. Chicken salad with wonton crisps was a fave, but also delicious was the salmon bites, beef tataki, and pan fried scallops. All the dishes were amazing, and the flavors really complemented each other. The first dish came out within 10 minutes. Service was impeccable! Would deffinatley recommend the restaurant, we will be going back for sure!!!
Food was sensational as always but for some reason the service was appalling. Waited 25min to be served initially and then when desert was ordered, two came out 35min before the remaining two (black sesame seed icecream, so not overly complicated). We had to leave before the final two deserts arrived.
Amazing dining experience. This place might not look like much from the outside, but once inside you are definitely in for a dining treat!
Once our drinks arrived we were given ample time to study our menu which I was secretly grateful for. The Salmon Sashimi Bites was the perfect way to start off our feast, the serving was quite small but luckily my partner is not a fan of raw foods so I had the plate to myself.
Next we ordered the Seaweed Salad to go with our shared hot dishes. The Baby Cajun Squid was amazingly tender packed full of flavour. The Soft Shell Crab was deliciously naughty but the wasabi mayo had just a tad too much wasabi for my partner to handle. Luckily the light sauce that came with the Sweet Potato and Eggplant Tempura worked well with the crab. The Chicken Tosazu was meaty and moreish and the Takoyaki Balls were good but nothing out of the ordinary. The Pork Belly Kakuni however was absolutely amazing! Tender melt-in-your mouth meat paired perfectly with white radish.
We shared a Teri-Waygu Steak for mains which was meant to be medium-rare but unfortunately too rare for my partner to enjoy. Although it was disappointing we both could not enjoy it, it was still an amazing dish. The mushroom miso was also a little bland to my liking.
Aside from the small hiccups I highly recommend Bonsai if you are after amazing food, amazing service at a very reasonable price.
Yummy food, good service, decent price. If you're starving then you might want to ask advice regarding portion sizes as if you're unlucky you might end up with only small dishes. But overall a great experience. Would make a good first date restaurant!
Best Japanese in Perth. This place excites me. All though I haven't eaten in every Japanese Restaraunt in Perth, so far this place is on top of the list. The service is friendly, the prices are not too steep and the quality of the produce is second to none. I consider myself adventurous and I had a crack at eating the Eel. It was nice, along with pretty much everything on the menu. A great place to show of you're chopstick skills to close Family and Friends. Will be back at The Bonsai sooner than later. Until next time ... 8/10
Great place if u want medium priced fancy Japanese food, great atmosphere. Entrees outshine the mains, had the beef cheek but was tough and tasteless.
Tasty, but maccas trip for top-up. All about the ambience. Servings are way too small and expensive to have a good fill. Service is very good.
Yummy. Came here on Saturday night with friends, service is really fantastic, attentive but not in your face. Drinks & food brought out promptly.
They have a 25% off voucher in the entertainment book which we used.
It's not traditional japanese, it has a western edge, for example I ordered spring rolls with bernaise (or bechamel?) sauce, and they were delicious, perfectly cooked and hot. I also ordered scallops, and seaweed salad. The seaweed salad is great, really yummy and quite a big serve, the 6 of us all could have some easily.
Only downside is the place gets a bit noisy (we were seated on a platform out the back).
I'll definitely be back.
Love this place! Great atmosphere and presentation of food. Food is delicious, especially the sushi and entrees
This place looked nice and romantic and laid back. It was very modern and classic.
The food was over priced for the amount you got but the food was to die for. I recomend every on to get a starter, main and dessert each as you can do this with this place and be full at dessert. Also service was really good and the people serving us were so friendly. The plus also was that the bath rooms were clean and smelled good and i like that. I would go back again.
Salmon sashimi bites. amazing.
Excellent. Came here with a friend and was not disappointed.
Entree all the way through desert the restaurant didn't fail to deliver.
Service was on the spot and not once did we feel smothered or unattended to.
All in all a well deserved 8.5/10
I love this place and bring all our out-of-town visitors here. Consistently great food and very reasonably priced!!
I eat here quite often and this has become my favorite first date restaurant. The menu is fairly extensive and caters to many tastes. My personal favorites are the unagi sushi and takoyaki as entrees. The angus steak is my usual main. The chicken salad with wonton skin is amazing and is unparalleled to anything I've ever had before. The wine list is quite decent but could be better. I've met the manager due to my frequent visits so and he is a great guy. Bottom line is, no matter what you fancy, this place will make you feel right at home.
Wow!. My husband and I have been here twice now in 2 weeks. It is so YUMMY. Love the salmon bites, asparagus wrapped in wagu beef, butter soy clams etc etc.. The share plate ideas are great so you can taste so much of their delicious food. Will be back again soon.
Very Good. Really enjoyed the share plates. Everything was flavoursome, maybe not the cajun squid. Overall, very delicious and service pretty much faultless. Will return in the near future.
Not exciting for the MAIN course!. Before I choosed The Bonsai Restaurant, I saw many difference comments from difference forum. What I can said, The waitstaff were very efficient and the food came out quickly once ordered, but not exciting for the MAIN course!
We ordered 3 entrees sharing and 2 main course, which is Tempura prawn sushi, californian sushi, beef asparagus, Teri-chicken and red wine & miso pork chop.
Sushi was great taste and display. Fresh Asparagus.
Most disappointed was 2 Mains, Teri-chicken and red wine & miso pork chop, it was not given me standout and exciting feeling. Much more normal. Taste also.
If next time i went back again, I will only order the Hot dish, sushi dish, cold dish. NO Main repreat!
Amazing!! 4 of us ordered 3 entrees to share and a main each and love them so much so we ordered another two entrees! Every dish was amazing! Can't wait to come back to try the rest of the menu. :)
Certainly an interesting find. The staff are friendly and the hot shares are great if you likes scollaps, prawns & crab then these are a must. The only downside is the service was a little rushed as had requested to serve the mains apart but would go back again.
Better than expected, will go back again!. I walked into this restaurant expecting to pay a lot for very little food. I was prepared to go somewhere else for a bite later! Surprisingly, my brother and I were really full afterwards!
I also expected a LONG wait (common amongst fine dining restaurants) but the food came really quick and service was impeccable. The owner was attentive, polite and friendly.
Here's what we had for entres and mains: Teri Angus steak ($28.90), oyster panko ($9.90), prawn kushi yaki ($13.80), and chicken salad ($12.80). All dishes were really tasty and flavoursome. Seafood was fresh and presentation was absolutely stunning. For dessert, we had black sesame ice cream ($4) and green tea martini. The black sesame flavour wasn't as strong as I like but it is really a minor detail in the grand scheme of things.
For the great location, amazing service, negligible waiting time, and good serving sizes for two people, the price is reasonable. I left feeling the fantastic meal and experience was worth the price. I would DEFINATELY recommend the place for couples or on special occasions. You won't be disappointed! This is fine dining quality food and ambience but with family-restaurant speed and friendliness. Will 100% go back again.
Great night. A group of us went for a selection of shares. Standouts were the beef with asparagus, fried chicken, grilled prawns, and tempura whiting. All amazing! The miso mushrooms and sushi were ok but nothing that blew us away. I found the sushi a little warm and the mushrooms a little undercooked. The grilled squid was too rubbery. But overall, it was a really enjoyable meal and we will definitely be back for the shares we enjoyed and to try some others.
Great selection of food, the sauces are a bit heavy and salty, but the food is worth it. Great tapas menu to share, the seafood is fresh and the salads are quite nice as well. Been here on several occasions and each time has been enjoyable.
Yummy entree scallops. Chicken teriyaki tasty but not much chicken. Why dont Perth Japanese restaurants serve brown rice like Sydney?! Miso had a strange taste but ok. Good service. They know when to back off
Modern Spin At The Bonsai. They put a modern spin on Japanese food at the Bonsai - the food is quite different but very tasty. The atmosphere was lacking in that I felt the tables were too close together for a romantic conversation. Parking is also a bit tricky around here and we had to leave the car in a dark carpark a few minutes walk away. Back to the food, the meals were tasty and I would go back to try some different items from the menu. They are also in the entertainment book which gives you a bit of a discount.
A surprising delight. The food was so interesting, I really enjoyed each dish was impressed by all the odd flavours that worked well together.
The service was bright and lovely and I would recommend this place if you would like to try something different.
Bravo for Bonsai. Love this restaurant. I have been a couple of times already, and have tried many of the menu items- all delicious. Really vibrant flavours through all of the food and great to share tapas style so you get to pick at everything. I especially love their desserts so make sure you leave room for the crème brulè- YUMMM!
One of the best fusion restaurants I've been to! Food is incredible. Definitely recommend the sashimi bites and the mushrooms. Prawn with avocado was interesting too. All the food have got a unique taste to it. Be prepared to be mesmerized!
Amazing.... I can't fault my visit to The Bonsai - the service and food were perfect and the prices were very reasonable. We shared the soft shell crab, crab legs, squid, satsumaimo salad and mushrooms - all were incredible. And with 2 drinks it only came to $30 pp so was very reasonable.
Great atmosphere and service. Liked the modern take on Japanese cuisine. Couple of very minor criticisms - the avocado in the ponzu maguro was a little under-ripe (firm) and I've had tastier agadashi tofu. But these were minor points in what was otherwise an excellent meal.
J-pop or J-rock?. Such a great surprise, walked past it so many times but never realized how contempory and sophisticated the food it had to offer.
Has outdone all of my Japanese favorites. Seafood so fresh! Skip the mains and taste around.
Hope to make it back soon.
Ieatperth. Fantastic. Great creative contempory Japanese food and half decent decent service to boot!
Only ordered veg and seafood dishes, came in under budget and the Kirin beer made it All so sweet.
Will be back again soon.
Don't let the exterior fool you. Super nice inside.
I'm in love!. What a great find before heading to a Festival show at the State Theatre. Fast and friendly service, fantastic menu. There were 4 of us and we shared about 7 plates of food. It all came out together and was superb. Faultless. And we had plenty of time to get to the show without feeling rushed. Also very reasonably priced. I'll be back!
Great! Really nice to have an upmarket option in Northbridge. Noisy but this adds to the atmosphere. Food was excellent. I loved the duck and Teri fish was best I've ever had. We tried 11dishes off the menu and all great!
Just.. Excellent. Very urban but comfortable surroundings.
Excellent service.
Great atmosphere.
Superb food.
Highly recommend for the casual dining experience... wide range on menu should suit those new or accustomed to japanese cuisine.
The atmosphere is very clean and chic, staff were attentive but unobtrusive. We ordered for the 'share' section of the menu and received our selection almost immediately, it was early though. The food was exquisite, fresh, and very, very tasty. The total bill was a little on the high side, but I'm happy to pay that bit extra for quality food, served by pleasant helpful wait staff in very comfortable surrounds. We will definitely be back, soon.
Miniscule serves...but winning service and awesome food. Came with my friend and proceeded to get completely lost, despite it's central location....the waiter held our table and acted like it was all his fault that I have the directional capacity of a blind drunk.
Comfy, ambient place...service is incredible...BYO wine...
Food was amazing. Serves are the size of a fingernail (this is a slight exaggeration....) ...we ordered several dishes to share and left craving a Happy Meal.
The salmon sashimi on asparagus was delicious, as were the panko coated oysters. The honey soy caramel duck slices were possibly the tastiest duck dish I've ever had...all of the food we ordered was just so tasty.
It set us back a fair bit, but worth it for the quality of the food. Will definitely be back, and will order more next time...as well as a serve of their incredible creme brulee.
Nice but expensive. I've been to The Bonsai a few times, which I have enjoyed. With the dark lightning, it's quite intimate and romantic. Portions were quite small for the price. Tapas were quite nice but quite expensive. The other food on the menu were also quite nice. Last time I went, my main came out what felt like forever. My friends had finished their tapas well before my main came out (pretty sure it was an hour or more later), then what came out was the smallest piece of pork ever. It wasn't really that great after waiting for an hour for it. I was rather unimpressed. I did ask the waitress a few times about my main. I left pretty hungry and unhappy. My previous experiences wasn't as bad as when I last went. After that, I'm not in a hurry to go back to Bonsai, but it's a different way to experience nice Japanese cuisine... when you get your meal within a reasonable time frame.
Hai. Simple, elegant and delicious. This is Japanese at it's best!
Went to Bonsai last night and it was our second visit. Much like our first visit food and service were great. This time around was just 2 of us we shared salmon sashimi bites, tuna maki nori (from the specials), wagyu beef tataki and soft shell crab all were delicious. But on to the mains before booking I called to check what the fish of the day was as last time it was Patagonian tooth fish which was cooked to absolute perfection. On getting confirmation over the phone that it was the same fish we instantly knew this is where we wanted to go for dinner. Once again it was possibly the best fish I have had in a restaurant in a long time (especially for the price) with the crispest skin adding that special touch. On the previous visit we were with a big group and had additional dishes such as duck with caramel soy, California sushi roll, red wine pork belly, beef wrapped around asparagus, seaweed salad and tempura prawns all as good as mentioned above. All wait staff are very attentive and helpful which is always an added bonus. Will definitely be going back again.
Expected more.. Maybe I have been spoilt too many times by Nine Fine Food.
Bonsai didn't quite live up to the hype, will definately try it again, just need to sample more of what they have to offer.
First time goer and it was sensational! Service was quick, wait staff were polite, helpful and trained professionally.. Food looked and tasted amazing, and reasonable! Delicious green tea moussecake too... Definitely a bonus going as a group to share the dishes easily. Will be back for more soon!
One of Perth's finest offerings! Keep returning and it never fails to render even the rowdiest friends speechless with food-gasms. Don't deny yourself the bliss of the wagyu beef-wrapped asparagus and the duck...
Great service. I love eating lunch at Bonsai but I haven't been able to since they changed their opening hours. They have great service and great food for the price your paying. In my opinion, I consider the lunch menu better than the dinner. Definitely would come back regularly
Not bad. Very nice food, well present and service was good.
But for the price the serves are tiny!!
VERY GOOD. DDELICIOUS FOOD, EXTREMELY good service, friendly staff and a good setting to :) would go back anyday
Awesome food. Can be hit and miss with the service if they are busy, but the food and great atmosphere far out way that.
Had dinner at bonsai tonight and everything was really tasty, all the flavor combonations were soon on snd really well balanced, price is good but a little let down by the service. All in all a good experience and I recommend it.
Amazing fusion food done right. I've eaten a lot of Japanese food but none quite like the dishes served at the Bonsai. It's a mix of western and japanese flavours - but done right.
My bf and I ordered quite a few small dishes and the pork chop with red wine and miso main - we were impressed with every dish that came out. The services was friendly and the prices very cheap for the quality.
My favourite was the tuna ponzu - rare on the inside, seared on the outside - served with avocado and chilli miso. I am drooling thinking about it now...I usually hate raw fish but this was DIVINE. The fish was so fresh you could taste it.
The seaweed salad was also amazing with the wonton skins, and also loved the pan fried mushrooms - they bursted with flavour.
For dessert we had the green tea martini and we polished that off in record time (though I do love green tea!). If you're sick of the usual chicken udon and teriyaki beef try the Bonsai - you won't be disappointed.
Good all around. Excellent service, great food and good ambience
I love their clever wasabi. It has a hint of green tea in it, but taste well with their sushi. We had an entre of salmon sushi and takoyaki. Then main of Teri-steak and Teri-fish. Both were great but I prefer the fish. It was tooth fish tonight. The waitresses were really attentive and polite.
Definitely recommended!
Really nice food!! Came with friends for course meal. Friendly service and the meal was excellent. The taki-steak (I think) was excellent and all my friends enjoyed the meal. Pity no byo on Friday and Sunday.
A little bit different. The Bonsai is a little bit different to your standard Japanese fare, so it's nice if you love your Japanese but don't really feel like a katsu curry or an udon noodle soup.
I think Bonsai is best when you order a bunch of the smaller dishes to share. I highly recommend the soft shell crab tempura, the pork belly and the mushroom miso. Yum!!
Oh, and how freaking cute are the tea cups??
Great evening ,enjoyed the food ,can't wait to go back
Lovely ambiance, amazing food and presentation. Very good service. A wonderful experience. Highly recommend.
Fabulous Food. Just the smartest nouveau Japanese tapas, very reasonably priced and great service with friendly staff. Just love it
Food was good, some interesting variations on the standard 'western' japanese favourites, so good to try out if your stuck on your teriyaki chicken and need to branch out. Price was reasonable too. Really uncomfortable chairs however...
YUMMY!!!. Beautiful selection of entrees and the teriyaki beef is very tasty.
Amazing. The Bonsai is incredible! Ever time I venture to The Bonsai the staff are amazing, the food is to die for and the service is out standing!
Great venue, good service and awesome food... And best of all great value.. Highly recommend
Best restaurant in perth!. A unique restaurant. the scallops are to die for!
Y.U.M.. This is not a Japanses restaurant; it's a fusion restaurant taking inspiration from Japan. Yes there are Japanese dishes on the menu, but on the whole it's not traditional food in any sense. The plates to share tapas style were inspired and inspiring. The highlights for me were the mini portabello mushrooms, the takoyaki, and the panko oysters. Yes they make use of some incredibly delicious sauces but they work with the food rather than smother and hide it. For me a good menu is one with so many incredible sounding dishes on it that it's hard to choose - and this menu certainly had a lot to choose from. It's not the cheapest meal out in Perth, but I'd happily go back. Great decor, great service, great food.
I am still here with my wifey-for-lifey after she had a hectic day at work. We just had the best contemporary Japanese cuisine ever! She just said that the fish of the season cooked with Ginger teriyaki was AMAZING, and I thought the steak was FANTASTIC. Nice and romantic atmosphere and ambience. Great customer service and lovely and friendly staff! Absolutely recommend this! And we'll be back! :-)
A Great Night Out!. I had heard good reports however hadn't yet eaten there myself when I booked a table for 15 for my birthday on Saturday - I am happy to say I was not disappointed. It was a high spirited table to say the least however the staff were very polite and accommodating. The food was amazing; every dish was just lovely crisp and fresh and arrived quickly so that we were able to keep ordering more of our favourites throughout the meal. Food and drinks were reasonably priced coming to just over $30 a head and everyone had more than enough to eat. I would have happily paid twice this! A great atmosphere and a fabulous night - would recommend to anyone!
Will be back soon!. Went with friends on recommendation and did not disappoint! Had 7 tapas-style dishes: prawn katsu sushi, duck breast, agedashi tofi, agedashi eggplant, salmon sashimi on witlof, seared scallops and tempura soft shell crab - all delicious and surprisingly enough to fill us (waitress did recommend 2-3 dishes each but don't think we would have been able to eat that!). 3 had the mushroom miso and loved that too. Each had a bowl of rice + BYO on a weeknight meant an amazing $20 meal each with entertainment card. Service was fine and dishes came out at appropriate intervals. Loved it!
Affordable contemporary Japanese. Went in with my boyfriend on a quiet night. Service was efficient, and food was of a good quality.
Ordered the wagyu beef tataki, eggplant & sweet potato tempura, pan fried mushrooms, and salmon sashimi bites as well as 1x miso and rice each. All this was sufficient enough, even without dessert or drinks, with the total bill coming to $60.
Recommended. Managed to jag a table at this funky Roe St eatery at the last minute due to a cancellation. The interior is high ceilings, concrete floors and painted exposed brick - has a converted warehouse feel to it. The furnishings are choclate brown and cream and very contemporary.
When we arrived we were greeted and taken to our table immediately. Water was poured and menus were handed over. Being vegetarian there is a limited amount of food for us to eat so we decided to try it all. The menu has a welcome page that explains that the food policy of the establishment is to bring you the food as soon as it is prepared in the kitchen. It goes on to explain that they suggest that you share courses between guests, but if you prefer to have set courses then let them know and the restauant will accomodate your wishes. The restaurant is also well versed in allergens and will make alterations to the meals to suit your dietary preferences. This was great for us as vegetarians as they made the agedashi and tempura sauces without fish stock.
We ordered a bottle of wine as the restaurant is only BYO on Sunday to Thursday and fully licensed on the other days. The wine came out nice and chilled and the waitress poured out a small amount for us to taste before filling the glasses, something unexpected at most restaurants in Northbridge.
We ordered the vegetarian sushi, this is reverse rolled and the sesame seeds added a lovely smokey flavour to it. Highly recommended. The satsumaimo salad which is sweet potato mashed with carrots and shredded radish was particularly tasty and the fresh tahini tomatoes were a combination of halved cherry tomatoes and sliced tomatoes drizzled in a rich tahini dressing and seasonings. It turned out to be surprisingly impressive and really great and fresh tasting. Next we ordered the agedashi tofu and agedashi eggplant and mochi which the chef made without fish stock for us. The agedashi tofu is probably the best we'ver ever had with the lightly fried outside being nice and crispy and the tofu inside melting in your mouth. We discovered that mochi (glutinous rice cakes) aren't really our thing but the eggplant was nice and flavourful. The sweet potato and eggplant tempura was fresh and crisp and certainly not oily at all.
All in all, it was a great experience, the food was delicious and fresh, the service was mostly on the ball and for enough food for two people, a bottle of wine and dessert with a glass of plum wine each to finish, it worked out to about $55 each so we found it to be good value.
Fusion. Bonsai is typical Japanese fusion. The food and service are quite good and great value for money. Well worth a try
Favourite jap fusion restaurant!!. I absolutely love Bonsai and can go there every night if I can afford to:P And yes, it is in the entertainment book!
Awesome food and top service! Their thoughtfulness is the most impressive and can even get a bit overwhelming :P The manager even tells you which number it is on the entertainment gold card and how many you can use with your number of guests!!!
And their $35/head or $45/head set menu are the best value fine dining set menu on earth! Definitely a great option for functions.
Yet to try is their matcha latte...mmmm...soy matcha latte :)
Sensational synergy & fusion. Isaac has ticked all the boxes offering the best value for money Japanese in WA. Their new dishes have raised the bar yet again, can't wait to go back.
Awesome. Went here a few nights ago for my younger brother's birthday and everything was fantastic - food, service, ambience. Thoroughly enjoyed the night. All the staff were extremely polite and attentive. There were always there when you wanted them to be but it never felt like they were hovering around you. The food was delish. Everything we ate tasted amazing. I highly rate the Wagu beef tataki and the ponzu maguro on avacado (seared smoked tuna on avacado). Food came out promptly and was presented beautifully. I like the fit out of the place although the dim lighting was a bit much for my Dad who had to hold the menu almost up to his nose to be able to read it. Will definietly be coming back and would recommend this to anyone even if you not a huge fan of Japenese. Great place for groups or just for two.
Great food and service. Go to bonsai often! Such great food, good price and excellent service. A dining pleasure.
Surprisingly good... I went to Bonsai thinking it'd be another overpriced pretentious bland fusion restaurant. I was pleasantly suprised to find it was as tasty if not better than Wagaya... one of the big boys in Sydney serving similar type of food.
Thoroughly enjoyed our meal at the bonsai. Everything was well presented with delicious flavours and fresh ingredients. Recommendations: chilli crab claws and creme brulee.
Love this place! Love the building, low lighting, service and most of all, the food. Loved ordering lots of good quality shares. BYO during the week. Lovely fusion Japanese in a classy setting.
Happy Bonsai Eater. OK. Long time lurker of UrbanSpoon, first time reviewer. So I'm just your average Perth diner, looking for nice, affordable and tasty places to eat at. I try to go to new places, but most of the time I play it safe and end up going to the same ol' joints.
But last night (Saturday) I went to try Bonsai with 2 of my friends. Walked in and liked the look of the place - old warehouse converted into a neat dining area, was dimly lit and had large tables to prevent us from playing elbowsies. We made a booking earlier in the week, so were promptly seated.
Service was great which surprised me as I am used to chasing up the waitress at other places, repeating my order etc. Our waitress poured us iced water straight away and then left us to peruse the menu. Once we decided, we closed our menus and I noticed that she noticed straightaway and so she came over to take our order. Service was to the point and pleasant - not once were we searching aimlessly to get the attention of the wait staff. All were quick to clear empty plates, refill waters and present the dessert menu. Also, the guy at the til was nice about us using the Entertainment Book card (you know how some places get bitter if you use it?!).
Food was delicious. We decided to do the tapas thing, rather then getting mains each. We started with seared scallops (6 pieces) which were soft and meaty. Followed by crispy fried chicken (7 pieces) with tangy soy sauce - it was exactly that, crispy! We also tried the creamy prawn spring rolls which was interesting because you don't normally find cream in deep fried stuffs (4 pieces), tempura sweet potatoes, chicken salad with wonton skin, and pork belly (3 pieces). All were nicely presented and tasty, except for the pork belly which I thought was pretty average at $20.
Dessert is always a must, and Bonsai have managed to offer both Japanese/Asian desserts (green tea or black sesame gelato, mango cakes etc) and Western traditional favourties (creme brulee, chocolate decadence, tiramisu mousse). We tried the gelato and brulee - my other friend wanted to try the chocolate decadence but the waitress was very apologetic that they had run out of that for the night. She then suggested for my friend to try the crepes and assured her that it would be covered in chocolate and caramel sauce and would be just as rich and delicous as the chocolate dish. It did not dissappoint - it came out like a layered crepe slice of cake and was refreshingly different.
All up, our bill came to $112 for 3 ppl (before discount), which is great value on its own that I felt a little guilty using the Entertainment card. This place is how dining out should be like - nothing is worst than eating overpriced crappy food, or waiting ages for the meals to come out, or having to yell at each other because of poorly designed building acoustics..... Bonsai was none of that. Big thumbs up from this average Perth eater, I'll be back again to try the mains and sashimi.
Love it!. I've been twice now, and had great food both times. The service the second time wasn't fantastic, as they left us alone for quite awhile before taking our order, but they did seem understaffed that night.
I definitely recommend the sashimi on witlof, the miso sauce mushrooms, the mushroom miso soup, and the green tea mousse cake.
The venue is nice and the place has good ambiance.
Great!. Service was fantastic - we had a mum and bub in our group and the manager was helpful with the pram, provided a baby chair etc. We also had a mum to be and the waitress carefully answered all her questions about the food. Hard to find service this good in Perth these days.
Food was lovely. I enjoyed every dish which came out freshly prepared.
The price was definitely right!
And a great atmosphere. I am a fairly fussy eating out person and I fail to understand some of the criticism posted about this place.
Exquisite. I had never seen or heard of the Bonsai before but it will be my go to restaurant from now on, out of the 5 dishes I shared with my guest ALL were amazing in their own way, each with their complimenting flavours and textures. I could not fault a thing at this place, the service, presentation, staff, taste, flavour, cost all of the best quality I have ever encountered. Of a lover and a frequenter to Japanese restaurants this is by far the best and I am so glad to have found this gem! Highly reccommended!!
Best teriyaki beef, asparagus beef, cold pork belly, and cream brulee and sesame seeds ice creams..
The best! I have eaten a lot of Japanese in most states of Australia and New Zealand and this one is the best. We went to Ha Lu on our first day in WA and it's got nothing on this place. Well done, there in no doubt on our next visit to WA we will be heading back.
Bonsai was beaut. Apart from being one of the gold listed restaurants in the Entertainment book, which entitles you to a nice $30 off, this was one of the nicest new fusion Japanese eateries we have been to.
As we had four of us dining, we ordered 2 shares each.
The Mushrooms were exquisite, the cold tuna sashimi was divine, cooked prawns delicious, in fact, of all the dishes we chose, all were tasty and left you feeling satisfied but not overly full. As we dined there over the NYear long weekend, they informed us that they had run out of Salmon and also the famous Asparagus wrapped in beef, as well as their fruit infused Sake.
However, this will entice us to venture back there for another occasion. Staff were friendly and food came out quickly. This place gets 4/5 stars for me. Glad Northbridge finally has high quality Japanese restaurant.
The only thing I could argue about
Absolutely brilliant. Went there with my wife and her parents for her birthday dinner on a Sunday night. The restaurant was full, but the atmosphere wasn't dull. Service was polite and attentive. Food came within 5-10 minutes of ordering. The dishes were beautifully presented. This is probably the best Japanese fusion we've ever had - in overall taste and experience.
We had the Seaweed Salad with crispy wanton skin, Unagi Sushi, Pan-Fried Mushrooms with Karashi-Su-Miso, Agedashi Tofu, Agedashi Eggplant & Mochi, Fried Chicken Tosazu, Sweet Potato & Renkon Tempura, a small tasting bowl of sweet potato salad and another small tasting bowl of string beans salad.
The tasters were fantastic. Sweet and savoury. Well balanced in flavours and textures. A great start to the meal.
Each dish was flavoursome and distinctive. The Seaweed salad was a good (and suprising) mix of textures. The crispy wanton skin is a MUST for the salads. The wanton skin gives a robust first taste, going into a green vegetable taste with the lingering taste of seaweed. Stay away from this dish if slimy puts you off because there are some slimy bits to this dish (varieties of seaweed).
The Pan Fried Mushrooms was the best dish. Crunchy on first bite and soft, sweet and juicy on the inside - were perfectly cooked. The generously drizzled miso paste was just salty enough and added a pinch of spice to the taste. The flavours blended perfectly.
The agedashi tofu and egg plant with mochi had a good amount of sweetness and saltiness mixed together. The strong gingery taste gives normally dull tasting tofu and mochi good flavour. The tofu was well fried (crispy but not oily and holding the shape well) and larger than normal in size.
The vegetable tempura might be the best tempura we've ever had. Delicately fried like the agedashi tofu and full of flavour. The green tea salt brings out a totally different side to this dish - a sharp punch of green tea flavour. It is a pity that there wasn't enough green tea salt and the salt dissolves into mush pretty quickly when dipped with the sauce. (Perhaps if they served it on the side with a serving spoon)
The fried chicken was nothing to shout about, but it wasn't bad either. Just nothing special. Just typical fried chicken, fresh and well drained of oil. But still a little oily for our taste buds. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside.
The portions were just right for sharing - just a few shares would make a full meal. It was certainly enough for the 4 of us. All that cost us $65.
Great food, beautiful presentation, modern decor, polite and attentive staff, nice cosy atmosphere, good value - highly recommended!
Like the atmosphere. The area n atmosphere were nice, however, not much choice of the lunch menu..
Up there with the best. Went here for dinner Wednesday night with my sister and was really happy with the service and the food.
The restaurant has an old warehouse feel (exposed brick, high ceilings) which are a quirky contrast to the food. There are tv screens on the walls which display the food they serve (unnecessary - I'd prefer pictures in the menu but eh!)
Order the asparagus and wagu beef (delicious - I said it tastes like a burger and my sister said she was thinking a Whopper - it is so so good), pork belly, seared tuna sushi, tempura prawn salad and the agadashi eggplant. Can't fault the food.
Dessert was a deal special Mon-Thurs, cake and coffee. Shared the mango cheesecake and it was divine. (I normally skip dessert but this wasn't too sweet). Only gripe would be the coffee was too bitter.
Overall, quite expensive ($96) but with the entertainment card, good value.
Would come here again for sure however we both said we'd order smarter next time. The salad at $18 (from memory) was great value but the pork belly at $20 for three small pieces was a bit on the pricer side.
If you love Japanese, this is a must try!
TRENDYCASUALbusinessLUNCH. Great food & selections, reasonable price, been for dinner months ago and today for casual business lunch with banker...didn't let me down, quick, polite and knowledgeable waitress/er...last one to leave 1 hour after closing but made to feel welcomed without any hints of rushing whatsoever.
Highly recommend for all occasion, noticed room for our next office function in the adjoining 2nd half of the restaurant...definitely!
In-fusion. Very delicious Japanese with a western tinge. Tasty - I recommend the prawn dumplings and the teriyaki steak (omg - cooked to perfection). Everything is wonderfully presented and it is a really lovely atmosphere.
Slick hip space with great food! Fresh funky Japanese and the lunch menu is great value. A good find amongst the Roe St asian eateries!
Great manager and staff. Had lunch there with a friend for my bday and the manager made my day! He's great with his patrons and has a charismatic vibe! The food come out good & the cakes...oh...the cakes...hahahah! Must try at least once!
I enjoyed the food here, although I sensed that some of the dishes were pre-prepared. However, all in all this place offers something a little different and is good value. Try the cakes for a sweet suprise!
The BEST. My Fiancee and I are now regular diners at Bonsai ,,
We are drawn to ,,, the friendly staff
prompt service
Great fresh food but ................
make sure you leave room
for anything in the desert cabinet WOW..
Absolutely the best experience at a restaurant in a very long time! Fantastic service, and perfect food. Definately worth while, particuarly in groups.
Wasn't sure what to expect at Bonsai, but we were pleasantly surprised. The service was really good - fast and attentive. Between 2 we shared 6 generously sized dishes for $50 which we felt was really good value. Every dish was delish! Seaweed salad with crispy wanton skins is a winner. Will definitely be back.
It's new and trying to impress. Japanese style tapas with quality food, fresh sashimi and although it was a quiet evening, very good service.
Like the name, the serves in bonsai are small. The food itself is ok but suffers from the fusion confusion where there are too many flavours in each dish, and they don't necessairily all work together. There are not many menu items to choose from. The atmosphere is ok in a renovated warehouse, but the plasma screens showing continuous screensavers of menu items is a bit commercial. In all, it's ok, but not worth a second visit.
Amazing!. Sensational food/service - this place has got the lot. Friendly and personable wait staff, amazing food (fusion between Japanese and Modern Australian) and fantastic warehouse style restaurant in Perth. Its straight out of Melbourne/Sydney....and for only between $20-$40 pp for food its worth going. We did - twice in one weekend!
Over the years I have heard nothing but good things about The Bonsai restaurant so it’s quite surprising that I only made my first visit recently. It is a modern Japanese fusion restaurant with an inspirational menu, the restaurant is dimly lit and although it seats many guests you still feel as though you have your own private space.
I’ve been to Bonsai a few times and have always walked out with a satisfied tummy and this time was no exception too. The menu works best for sharing and we had: Aburi Salmon Nigiri Sushi (Topside lightly flamed sashimi on sushi rice garnished with den-gaku miso with sprinkles of sesame & chives) Unagi Sushi (Japanese BBQ eel and cucumber dressed with aioli & caramel soy) Teri-Chicken (Pan fried chicken Maryland thigh fillet paired with a side of steamed broccoli and carrot, dressed with lemon shallot vinaigrette and teriyaki sauce, garnished with chives) Tastes of the sea (whiting, prawn, baby squid) in our light tempura batter and seasoned with nori flakes. Served with tentsuyu (tempura sauce) on the side. Salmon Sashimi Bites (Sashimi-grade salmon tartare placed on witlof leaves dressed with aioli. Best eaten by the mouthful) Apologies for the dark photographs, we were seated in the “inner” area and it was pretty dark in there ( I’m all for ambience but making it slightly difficult
It's all about the sauces at Bonsai; they're beyond lickable - I'm even prone to ordering a side of rice so that those pools of flavour don't go to waste. There's plenty of space to fit anywhere from a cosy two or a birthday crowd but regardless of company, I recommend ordering tapas style. The Bonsai have an extensive menu of entrees which have consistently continued to impress, whilst I've felt that the mains tend to be overpriced and underwhelming...
The prawns inside and plump and perfectly cooked. The béchamel is rich, decadent and the perfect accompaniment to the juicy seafood and crunchy pastry.
Likes: salmon sashimi bites, creamy prawn springolls, chilli crab claws; Dislikes: boring dessert menu; Overall: will return, still a great spot for modern Japanese fusion

Although The Bonsai Restaurant and Café Lounge is a Japanese restaurant, hubby commented that he didn't feel like he just had a Japanese meal and I agreed. So if you are wanting some traditional Japanese food, this isn't the place for you but if you are looking for contemporary Japanese inspired dishes then give them a try.
The Bonsai is a perfect option to start a Friday or Saturday night – the mood is a bit a bit “special occasion” but still comfortable and you wont feel rushed at all. It’s a bit more unique from your common Japanese - ideal if you want to impress someone a bit special. The Sneaky Pidge will be back…and soon!
The eggplant and capsicum namura was unexpectantly one of my favourite dishes of the night. The eggplant had an amazing texture that was close to that of set custard, held together only by its
Can't go wrong with sautéed prawn with béchamel sauce, wrapped in spring roll pastry - love love béchamel sauce!
Throughout the night, the service was excellent, attentive and efficient. While the food may look simple, it is anything but. That is the nature of Japanese cuisine. I really enjoyed my dinner and was full. All those little dishes add up fast and the dessert finished things off. Some dishes were tasty without being spectacular, but others were just delicious with lots of flavour. I particularly enjoyed the Wagyu Beef Tataki and the Tempura Soft Shell Crab while the Chocolate Indulgence was as the name suggested – superb! For 8 dishes at around $12 each on average, a total bill just under $100 is not bad. The entertainment book’s discount made it even better.
But the highlight of it all was the sauce. A quality Teriyaki base with a subtle butter flavour made this dish simply sensational.
I admit I don't usually dine out on Japanese anything past a quick sushi roll on the run. It's not that I find the cuisine any less intriguing than others of the Orient, it's just in Perth a good Japanese restaurant is few and far between. With that said,
If you eat here this is the way to go, sharing plates all round. There's hot dishes, cold dishes, sashimi selections, you name it it's there and priced between 12 and
Bonsai Japanese Restaurant would have to be one of the earlier modern Japanese restaurants to have opened in Perth. Since its opening back in 2010/2011 it has only gone strength to strength and proves to always provide quality dishes at reasonable prices..
