Faultless. Well worth the wait to get a seat here. There were no bad dishes and one of the most pleasant dining experiences you’ll have. Thanks

Overjoyed to receive an email noting that there had been a cancellation and I was IN! I had screwed up the booking app (being a first-time user) and had to resort to waitlisting for every possible date. But my efforts had paid off and here was a chance, at last, to sample the legendary Marumo by Moe Oo...

I cannot fault the cooking and attention to detail. Courses were well-timed, each individual dish made sense by itself and within the omakase progression. Starting with the appetizer of ameabi & buri we moved to a sublime dish of duck, mushroom and miso egg yolk which was a silky, thick flavour bomb.

Next came a beautifully textured tofu dish with rice puff balls, an excellent plate of superb quality sashimi, innovative sushi (once again, playing mostly with the textures to enhance the experience), and an exquisitely tender beef dish that paid homage to the original steak & onion but was much, much tastier. The only slightly disappointing dish was the dessert of shio koji, popcorn and chestnut which looked beautiful but tasted mostly like sweet breakfast cereal. I think something slightly more thoughtful could have been used to round out what was otherwise a perfect succession of dishes.

Definitely will come back. For $70 it is certainly great value and I can confirm that the hype is (mostly) justified - one of the top meals in Perth - provided you can be bothered to fight for a table!!

Fantastic service. Staff had excellent attention to detail from working out if I was drinking wine to putting the wine we brought on ice.

Menu was placed on the table and each meal was described to each person when served. Again attention to detail to each plate and cutlery was provided for different courses. Hidden Gem of Perth. Omg

Thank you for making my birthday very memorable. And we will be back for more.

Marumo is one of Perth’s best degustation restaurants, and its price tag of $70 per person makes eating there even more of a coveted experience. Securing a booking there has become a monumentally difficult task, as bookings are only released every few months and tend to be booked out within the first minute or so of being released.

This place is amazing. Byo and food is of such a high quality I felt like I was a judge on Masterchef. I’m not a massive desert person but the desert which was beetroot focused was just amazing one if not the best desert I have ever had. I highly and I mean highly suggest this place for an amazing experience. Need to book well in advance.

Outstanding meal. Everything was so well balanced, with dishes which shone with the simplicity which brought out the best of the natural ingredients. The highlights were the duck, which melted in the mouth, the Tasmanian salmon belly sashimi which was delightfully fatty, the soba which I would have gladly eaten a whole bowl full of, and the sushi in which the variety of tastes were balanced in every mouthful.... And it's not fair to have a highlight if everything was a highlight. The entire evening was a culinary delight. Very greatful to have managed to secure a booking ( second attempt!) And hope to attend again in the future.

First time at Marumo and everything was absolutely delicious.. the 7 courses along with the sneaky squid salad appetiser and sorbet palet cleanser. Each course was just mouth watering and I do not have one complaint. Walked out completely satisfied and cannot wait to go there again. Amazing food, amazing service and great value. New favourite Perth restaurant without a doubt!

One of the best restaurants I have ever had the pleasure to dine in. The highlights for me were the Tasmanian Salmon Belly Sushi, the Miso, Yuzu & Grapefruit ice cream dessert and the crispy Burdock, Zucchini & Corn. Fabulous food. Attentive service. Cosy premises, max 30. One of the tables were tipsy and very noisy. Four Omakase menus a year. Bookings are open seasonally (quarterly). When bookings open online, you have about 15 minutes before every table for every night is booked up for the season. Some people have better luck with a mobile (than a PC). We had the Winter menu which was:- Squid pre-appetizer- Smoked New Zealand Mussel- Shark Bay Honey Bug soup- Burdock, Zucchini & Corn- Sashimi - Scallop, Hamachi & Salmon- Tasmanian Salmon Belly Sushi- Yuzu & Orange sorbet- Duck, Carrot & Quinoa- Miso, Yuzu & Grapefruit ice cream. So sheok!

Absolutely love it and cannot wait to go back again. Been here a while ago and tried the Omakase Menu. Food is prepared with the freshest ingredients and with lots of care. It's obvious through the way food is presented on the plate and in good sequence. We were even served with a refreshing sorbet as a palate cleanser before the pork fillet came out. Well-balanced flavours in every dish. Our menu of the night:

~Yellow Fin Pacific Tuna & Yamaimo
~Margaret River Beef Tataki
~Soft Shell Crab & Enoki
~Chef's Selection of Sashimi
~Tasmanian Salmon Belly Sushi
~Linley Valley Pork Fillet
~Miso Caramel Parfait, Pear & Popcorn

Nice ambience, top-notch food and great value for money. Cannot fault it at all.

This is so worthwhile, if you are able to get a booking, great stuff you're in luck. Bookings open in 3 months slots and fully booked out in 20 minutes, it hot stuff right now. Its a set seasonal menu and consists of around 7 dishes for $65. True value for money and afterwards you definitely feel 'oh wow I had all of that for only that much".
The beef with corn trufle, Sashimi and sushi were truly devine . It genuinely makes it one of the best Japanese restaurants in Perth.
Its a 3 hour setting, so bring your wine and make sure you have good company.

Not to be missed!!! You have to be determined to get a spot with limited nights and single seating, with reservations opening in 3 month blocks at a time. I've been twice for two different seasonal menus and haven't been disappointed by any dish. In fact the chef has completely changed how I feel about some ingredients. Such as the cold edamame soup. So creamy, so naturally sweet. The sushi roll was perfectly balanced and given that you are encourage to eat each generous piece in a single bite, a little fun too.

Came here on a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago. The most creatively presented Japanese food in Perth. Located in a simple, unassuming venue in Nedlands, Marumo is one of Perth's best kept secrets (and good luck trying to get a booking - it's more of who you know). The seven to eight courses take a marathon 3 hours to get through but your palate will be excited at every course.

Really amazing Japanese food. Highlights on the night we dined here were the Noritake Chicken, salmon belly sushi and the chilled edemame lobster and tobiko soup. Highly recommended. Only gripes are it's very small. Small enough to hear everyone else's conversations. I hope Stuart overcomes his self consciousness in the bedroom love. The duck course on the night wasn't great. Tough, lukewarm and not a trace of Japanese flavour. The omakase menu means that the process takes a fair amount of time. Get a table if you can.

Marumo is a tiny, intimate little restaurant discreetly tucked away in a professional centre amongst the dentists and lawyers offices.
It has a stellar reputation and usually books out for months within a day of opening bookings each season. However, their reputation is well-earned and it is more than worth the wait. With an exclusively omakase, or "chef's choice", set menu, Marumo creates an amazing 7- course modern japanese meal - the summer menu included a sashimi course with fresh grated wasabi, braised duck wrapped in crispy fried bean curd and a line of 3 incredible little sushi rolls containing deep-fried prawn and topped with 'blowtorched' tuna slices.
The standout for us was a mind-blowing chilled edamame soup. It was thick and creamy and contained beatifully steamed chopped lobster meat and a sprinkling of tobiko. The flavours supported each other beautifully and I can honestly say I've never had anything like it.

Whilst the restaurant will do what they can to accommodate dietary requirements, they're understandably restricted due to their menu style. If you're not a lover of seafood Marumo may not be your thing, as most courses contained it.
The ambience was lovely and intimate, the waitstaff friendly, helpful and genuinely happy to be there.

At the insanely low price of $65/person, this was one of the best dining experiences I've had anywhere in Australia. I'm excited for when bookings for next season open and I will be ready to pounce on one!

DE. LI. CIOUS.

Food was amazeballs (definitely could have eaten more) and the service was really efficient.

With only a 28 seating capacity and constantly being booked out at least 3 months in advance, you know they're doing something right.

Was lucky enough to try out the Omakase Menu (their spring menu) and I must say, the only criticism of the food I had was that there wasn't enough of it. There was no one dish that was a let down and all of them were delicious on their own.

Would definitely recommend (if you manage to get a booking)!

Onakase Menu |
• river prawn karaage
• panko egg and enoki mushroom
• northwest barramundi and sweet miso
• sashimi
• Tasmanian salmon belly sushi
• beef tenderloin with carrot and corn purée
• genmaicha and strawberry

If you manage to secure a booking at this tiny, non-assuming Japanese restaurant (a challenge in itself), be prepared for a wonderful culinary experience. Upon arrival we were politely greeted and were allowed to choose our preferred table. The restaurant itself is very casual and holds no more than 30 diners. The menu is set - 7 courses, (not including a complimentary appetiser and sorbet), but be warned - there is no drinks menu, so other than the included water and green tea, it's strictly BYO. Courses came out at a steady pace over the space of 3 hours, with highlights being the miso barramundi, the tempura prawn and torched salmon belly sushi (divine) and the melt in your mouth sashimi. Does Marumo re-invent the wheel with their degustation dishes? Not quite, but the dishes were most importantly fresh, full of flavour, well presented and had your taste buds doing a happy dance. At $65 a head, I couldn't quite comprehend how or why their pricing was so low considering that most degustations in Perth are close to double this, but no complaints here! The only thing lacking from the night was a bit of atmosphere and ambience, but if I can manage to secure another booking I will definitely be back here soon.

What a complete nonsense - the booking process that is! The wife, along with all her work colleagues have been trying to secure a booking for, well at least months, if not a year. Finally we get a shot, not because we were successful but because friends were....twice, for consecutive nights.

Nice little restaurant for about 25 or so guests, unfortunately we were seated near the door, thankfully it only opened a few times as the draft was bloody freezing.

The service was good, no, I lie, it was great, very attentive. The meal, well my mate reckons it was some of the best food he's ever put in his mouth. I didn't think it was that great but definitely a beautifully prepared, presented and flavoursome meal that is hard to fault. I was a little (read - a lot) worried that there wouldn't be enough & we'd have to stop for a burger on the way home but despite the portion sizes overall it was enough to satisfy.

Will we be back? Probably, but due to the booking process it might not be until 2018 (if we're lucky).

We waited for this day for two months after we booked. My body was ready to devour all 7 courses. Marumo is a little 25 seater restaurant offering a 7 course omakase for $65 incl green tea. Service was polite, attentive and my water and tea glasses were always kept topped up. Everyone is pretty much served each course at the same time and the dining room goes from a buzz of laughter and chatter to dead silence when the food arrives cuz we're all busy stuffing our gobs. Haha

Each course was a delight but for me, the stand out was the dessert course. White chocolate and geinmatcha mousse with apple jelly, finely diced apple and green tea and roasted rice garnish. I scanned the restaurant to see if anyone didn't eat theirs cuz I swear to god, it was soooo good I would've finished off a stranger's dessert haha. I wanted seconds. And thirds. It was a light and refreshing end to a seven course meal.

My other favourites were the eggplant and cuttlefish. That bit of tempura eggplant with sweet sticky icky miso glaze was so moorish. Wanted a whole bowl of it. The aburi salmon belly roll with tempura prawn and tobiko was definitely some of the best sushi I've had.

All the dishes were beautifully presented and it was a memorable meal. Hanging out for the next release date so I can book in again!

The best dinning experience of my life. After dinner you leave and talk about nothing else all night. Chef Moe is the master. Marumo is a small intimate Japanese restaurant in Perth that is the ‘talk of the town’. It is constantly booked out 3 months in advance via online reservations and if you’re lucky enough to get a booking you will understand why. Everyone that I know that has been here, has loved it. I have not heard a single bad thing about it which is an amazing achievement in itself. The restaurant can sit a maximum of 30 people and they only have one seating per night. The focus of this place is not getting as many people in and out of the door as possible. It really is about enjoying high quality food, and simple food executed to perfection. The chef offers a 7 course Omakase menu for only $60 per person (absolutely bargain!). It is also BYO.

Lovely dinner. 7 courses over three hours. First came the chilled edamame soup with lobster which I could eat over and over. The snapper followed and melted in your mouth. The duck panko was a little dry to my liking. Sashimi and sushi fresh. The beef again melted and the sauce was made it better. The desert was green tea mousse with white chocolate, although not completely set the flavour made up for it. I will here again.

This was our third trip to Marumo but the first to the new location at Nedlands since they moved from Leeming. The atmosphere and quality of the food has definitely improved which is a big call for the food as it was pretty damn good before at the old store. Every dish was beautifully presented and delish! They were also able to cater for my dislike of sashimi and gave me pork gyozas instead. My favorite dish was the dessert, strawberry mousse with a green tea filling and white chocolate crumble. It wouldn't be something I would usually order but because it came with the set menu, I had no choice. I was surprised how good it was as I normally don't like mousse. The only downside is that it came out slightly slow so you should expect to be there for the entire 3 hours (7-10pm) and it is really noisy as the restaurant is small and packed. Will definitely try to come back.. If we manage to get a booking!

Best Japanese fusion restaurant in town! Though it took us three months, but we finally managed to grab a table for five a few weeks before study break, which is absolutely delightful.

Our menu today consisted of the following:
Albacore tuna, avocado and mentaiko
beef tenderloin with ponzu
Duck and corn
Chef's selection of sashimi (hamasaki kingfish, Tasmanian salmon and Hokkaiddo Scallops)
Tasmanian salmon belly sushi
miso Barramundi and parsnip
strawberry, yuzu and green tea.

Of all the dishes, the sushi was the best! I am not kidding, they have the best sushi in Perth. The salmon belly was slightly seared, and the sushi roll was filled with freshly cooked tiger prawn tempura. The prawn tempura's coating was still crunchy when you bite into it! The mayo on top was also slightly seared, giving it an extra smoky flavour; it was just divine!

But honestly though, everything was gorgeous, the flavours all well balanced and ingredients so fresh. You can certainly taste that the chef has put a lot of effort into these dishes.

It's still the best value 7 course omakase dinner in Perth!

Just had another yummy meal made with love by Chef Moe. Throw in a lovely bottle of Tattinger bubbly and it was match made in heaven.

The amuse bouche was thinly sliced pickled squid.

Starter was a deconstructed chawan mushi - lobster as the base, egg custard and topped with ikura (salmon roe) and a sprinkle of nori (dried seaweed).

Next up was pan fried cod served on a bed of gobo (burdock root) and seri (wild vegetable) braised in dashi, soy and mirin. The sauce was too delicious so we slurped it up (very unladylike but it had to be done!)

The duck dish was superb. Thin slivers of perfectly cooked duck draped over an inari pocket that is stuffed with chopped duck and potato mash (I think) and a shredded cabbage salad.

Chef's selection of sashimi was firm and fresh salmon, kingfish and scallops.

The salmon belly sushi was wolfed down too quickly... I know I should have savoured every mouthful but it was far too scrumptious!

Palate cleanser was orange peel sorbet which was welcomed after a few fishy rounds lol.

Next dish of beef and pumpkin was anything but plain! The beef was juicy and meltingly tender and combined with the pumpkin and sauce was a taste sensation!

Dessert was black sesame and blueberries. Layers of jelly, black sesame panna cotta and a shortbread crumble. Couldn't work out where the blueberries were.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening filled with good conversation and cheerful dispositions!

-------------------------------------
Our group was lucky enough to book the entire restaurant to celebrate a relative's significant birthday back in July 2014.

It was a memorable evening filled with good cheer fuelled by BYO bubbly/wines and exquisite modern Japanese cuisine.

The menu was plainly written and belied the freshness, simplicity and richness of each dish that was served!

Tuna, apple and yuzu dressing
Tofu, radish and sesame sauce
Salmon miso with enoki
Chef's selection of sashimi
Salmon belly sushi
Harvey beef cheek
Vanilla bean ice cream and matcha

I highly recommend dining at Marumo and joining the "bingo" online reservations system lol. Getting in is like winning 3rd division lotto :-).

The good news is the restaurant is only fully booked the next 2 months (it has been longer in the past). Online bookings for November 2015 opens this Monday. Keep your fingers crossed for me, I'm hoping to get lucky with a table for 4.

Having waited what seemed an eternity to get into the exalted Marumo’s door, my pals JS, Frau K, The Prof and I were like excited schoolgirls waiting to visit their teen crush. Securing a table at Marumo is a mission in itself, and it took me a good six months of frantic internet keyboarding to secure a table. It was worth waiting for. The tiny restaurant features an Omakase menu that evolves monthly, according to produce availability.

There's full disclosure on the Marumo web site, the Omakase takes time, often three hours, and it is extremely generous, $60 for seven delicate, simple but beautifully conceived courses, not to mention an amuse and a pre desert palate cleanser. . . Still I found the pace exceedingly slow, even as a slow eater, equipped with several bottles of wine (it's also BYO, the glasses are a little too narrow).

It's a minor quibble and not surprising - there's one chef and three wait staff and a small room full to the brim (25-30 depending on seating configuration) with expectant customers. . . What's three hours, when you've waited two months to get a table.

It is unbelievably difficult to get a booking at the highly coveted Marumo.. but I can assure you it is worth the wait! The seven-course Omakase (Chef’s Selection) menu is devine; the dishes are Japanese-influenced with a traditional yet modern twist. For only $55 per person, you definitely get good value for money! The standout dishes for me were definitely the Tasmanian Salmon Belly Sushi and Beef Ternderloin & Corn Croquette.

I've been here twice, both to celebrate birthdays. Both experiences have been lovely and I will definitely go here again (in fact, will be booking for September!).

Atmosphere: clean, spacious and unpretentious. Has a few nice touches such as the hanging lights. Loved the double walled glasses to keep the free green tea nice and hot!

Service: could not be faulted. Each waiter was attentive, with tea and water being constantly refilled over the 3 hour dinner. It was also nice that they explained what each dish was as it came out. BYO was $2.50 per person, which was not unreasonable.

Food: words cannot describe exactly how fresh, how creative, how tasty and how well presented each dish was. You can tell that the chef enjoys what he is doing and has high standards. I've never been to a place that serves sashimi in plates that have been pre-frozen with a layer of ice on the bottom. It's these kinds of things that make a person truly appreciate the effort and feel good about dining in a restaurant.

Overall: a must try, as the omakase is only $55/p. Portions very reasonably sized but super big eaters may still be hungry at the end. Beware that the dinner will take 3 hours, but with the right company you will enjoy every minute.

Exquisite. My friend took months to get a booking and invited me along.

I was a bit unsure when I found out we could order but eat what is served but everything was just exquisite. There is nothing at all to complain about the quality of food.

Be warned that it is like a teaser. All the servings are small but so delicious that you want more but that is it. You get what you are served but wanting more of it.

The only downside is that the wait between the dishes can take a while. But that is only because he is the only chef and he really ensure that each dish carefully prepared. Totally worth the wait.

Definitely going back!!!

10 out of 10. This has to be some kind of misprint, but a $55 omakase?! this restaurant is what Nobu's chef omakase SHOULD be.
I would happily pay at least $150.
Each course was interesting, favoursome and well thought out.
Unpretentious and unassuming. If the place wasn't next to impossible to get into I would eat here every month!
My only issue was that the duck was slightly overcooked, but that is probably personal preference.

WORTH THE WAIT. Booked 2mo in advance by their online system. Went last night and the place did not disappoint.

Marumo offers an omakase menu designed by the chef and the same is served to all diners, with the menu changing according to availability of produce... 7 courses, each tapas size, building up to the richest course at the end followed by dessert - a culinary fusion feast!

Among the delights of last night's menu was the freshest sashimi I've ever tasted (whiting, scallops and salmon), the yummiest Tassie salmon belly sushi, a delicious orange sorbet palate cleanser, soy-braised duck with pumpkin, and the most wonderful yuzu + peach icecream to finish. Complimentary green tea was a highlight, with our glasses being topped up all night.

Exceptional food, top notch service (equivalent to the old style silver service), knowledgeable and friendly waiters, and a lovely chat with chef Moe and his wife afterwards. Marumo is THE BEST Japanese I've had in many years. The booking system can make it tricky to get a table but persevere because this place is simply fantastic and has to be experienced to be believed.

Three months later. It has been a long wait but after trying it, I will now be requesting to be placed on the wait list on a regular basis. The tiny restaurant is kept so because of the high quality control placed by the chef, who prepares every single one of the 7 course omakase dishes by himself. I cannot find fault in either size or taste of dishes and look forward to trying something different each month ( if i get in that is). Love this place and as much as sharing this will make bookings even harder, good news needs to be shared.

The Best!. When I discovered that Marumo was closing its fish and chip doors and relocating to Nedlands the first question I asked was, “how much will they charge now” The seemingly unbelievable answer was that the price increase has been only marginal, it’s still BYO and corkage remains at $2.50 per head. What a relief.

So what’s changed? Capacity has increased slightly, decor has drastically improved and the patrons appeared a little hipper then I remember on previous visits.

What’s remained the same? The incredible, fresh, elegant and amazing value for money night of culinary entertainment and fine food. The intimate and attentive service from the owner, chef and staff. Free parking! One more thing, you’ll still have to reserve a table two months in advance, which I did on the first of the month, when bookings open.

This is the best on offer and worth the wait every time.

The best Japanese I have ever had. Where do I begin? The beef tataki was ridiculously tender, the salmon belly sushi was heaven, and I would eat only the black sesame and baileys parfait for the rest of my life, if such a thing were possible. Everything we had was better than the last. Definitely worth waiting two months for.

Good food. Stand out dishes were the yellowtail hamachi sashimi (never seen or heard about this fish before) and the braised duck (full of flavour and falling off the bone). I felt the beef tataki was served a little too warm but the sauce had good flavours. Had to wait one and a half months for a booking on a saturday for two. $55 for omasake you cant go wrong.

Relocated, but worth the wait!. Having moved from Leeming to Nedlands, this new revision of Marumo has been open around 6-7 weeks so far. After a brief discussion with the wife/husband team that run this Japanese (dego style) restaurant they divulged that the old place sat 16 people max whereas the newly relocated restaurant seats around 26 maxing out at 28.

The layout allows for several couples, a couple of table of 4 people and 1 larger table accommodating up to 8 people (10 maximum). The pricing has also gone up from $40 per person to $55 per person to accommodate the higher rent I am assuming.

Having never been successful in obtaining a booking to dine at their old premises in Leeming, I cannot comment on comparisons from new place to old but will say both me and Susan left unable to pick a fault with any of the dishes offered. Just a note - they are unlicensed, but you can BYO at 2.50 corkage per person which is reasonable.

The normal fare here is a degustation style 7 course offering with extra starter and palate cleanser before the last 2 courses. The dining experience takes about 3 hours so be prepared to settle in. The decor inside is trendy and the owners/chef/waiters are both friendly and professional.

The menu changes every month with new offerings but the Sashimi and Sushi are permanent fixtures on the menu for the foreseeable future. They are also happy to cater to allergies.

We were started off with a Squid Salad which was refreshing and light. A great starter as there was good flavour within this offering to get the taste buds going in anticipation of the first course. This was offered up next as the Beef Tataki. The Beef was very fresh and appetizing.

The second course was Lobster, Inari and Scallop. Presentation was professional and the dish once again didn't fail to impress in flavour. Pork Gyoza was the 3rd course and was cooked to perfection.

The 4th course was the Chef's Selection of Sashimi including salmon, tuna and hamashi. Once again all the fish on offer was very fresh. We both took note of the clever use of a large block of ice under the fish (with a leaf inbetween) to keep the fish chilled.

Chef's signature Salmon Belly Sushi was the 5th course and this was one of our favourites out of a crowd of high performers. It is really hard to pick them, as everything is so good. At this point the palate cleanser was brought out - a naval orange sorbet. We could actually taste the orange in this.

The 6th course and also the biggest portion of the night was the soy-braised duck (leg). Don't think this was playing second fiddle to all the seafood on offer though. The flavours and presentation with this course were spot on once again and even though we were starting to run out of steam, didn't find it difficult to consume.

The 7th and final course (desert!) was a black sesame and bailey parfait which once again, was faultless. Being more of a savoury person, I have to say this desert was spot on.

Service was friendly, efficient and tactful. Food and presentation was spot on also. Atmosphere and comfort were big ticks also. As there is a larger table of people present usually, the noise can get up to average levels so not a place for an intimate dinner, but we still had a very enjoyable night nevertheless.

I really recommend this place. Check it out if you manage to strike the lotto and get a booking as it is already booked out until the end of July at this point. This is the only thing that will prevent you from dining here. I recommend trying your luck on the first day of each month when they release the bookings for that month. If your after the bigger table of more than 6 people book for 6 and call the number to add more people.

I'm writing this for those who are a bit confused. Marumo opened in suburban Leeming in 2011. According to the management, they were planning to relocate to a bit more central location and they took over the place in Nedlands formally known as La Cascade in late 2013. They have been doing renovation since and now it's about to re-open soon.

The seven-course Japanese omakase dinner at this intimate restaurant was an amazing exploration of textures and tastes. From traditional favourites (like sashimi) to the inspired green tea creme brulee, each dish showcased a different culinary technique and a meticulous attention to detail. The tempura pumpkin with curry salt and shichimi mayo is a case in point. The crispy tempura contrasting with the soft, sweet pumpkin encased within was perfection in itself but the pinch of curry salt sprinkled on each piece added yet another dimension to each bite. The ubiquitous pumpkin made another appearance as a garnish for the sashimi dish, but it was transformed into tiny strips of almost-nutty crunchiness. The dinner began with the delicate flavours of crab miso soup followed by the steamed Mount Barker chicken, partnered with fresh shitake mushrooms in a delicate, ginger infused consomme. The dinner's savoury finale of grilled salmon was the polar opposite of the opening act , with tantalising, strong flavours - the salmon beautifully pink and flavoursome.
We also loved the little surprises along the way- like the palate-cleansing citrus sorbet! The service was excellent too. The dinner was worth the six month waiting list.

Must try!. I've never written a review before! But marumo certainly deserves one! The restaurant is hidden away and a little far to travel to from where I live and I had to book 2 months in advance but honestly it was worth the trip and the wait! The dinner had 7 courses including dessert but we also got strawberry sorbet and miso soup in between the 6th and the 7th course! My mother does not like sashimi and surprisingly they noticed that she didn't eat her plate of sashimi and quickly whipped up kingfish tempura with sauce which was amazing!
The sushi was extraordinary with the perfect amount of spiciness!

Came here with high expectations after the extremely positive reviews. At first glance you would not expect to have a degustation at this unassuming joint, however within minutes of being seated it was apparent that the food and service was deserving of such high praise. At $39 you can't expect the intricate dishes of usual degustations, but you can expect the food to be prepared with great care, and impeccable service from the attentive waitress and chef. Best for couples, not large groups, and dress warm if you are dining in the colder months. edit: sashimi here is mindblowing

Quality Japanese Food. Had a really nice dinner with friends tonight. Really love their 7 courses set menu. We actually got more than 7 dishes as they will have something for you before and during the meal that is not part of the set menu. You can tell by the food quality that the chef really cares about his food and put in afford and heart to cook it. The restaurant is tiny which can only seat about 12-15ppl per night. Which is why they are always fully booked I guess....we actually had to book 1 month earlier to get a table for four on a weeknight....longer waiting list for weekends.....we ended up book for our next visit at the end of our meal, which is 2 months ahead (for weeknights too.....their next available weekend booking is in December!!) Best omakase in Perth. It's not saying too much that it's the best omakase in Perth since I don't know of that many places which specialise in this style Japanese food. But certainly Chef Moe and his wife knows how to make wonderful food to die for. It has been a long time since the husband I have been excited about Japanese food in Perth.

As an opener to the seven course degustation menu, the tempura enoki mushrooms were light, fragrant and simply more-ish. The second course of gyu tataki (seared beef sliced thinly in a vinegared sauce) was equally light but had more punch because of the sauce. King prawn in a sushi roll, topped with salmon belly proves just how good fresh sushi can be. Sashimi of kingfish, Hokkaido scallops (deliciously sweet!), salmon and octopus made up the four course. Course five was kani kara-age where the batter was crunchy and flavoured delicately, and matched with chilli flaked mayo and matcha salt. The sixth course was a mini salmon-don with miso soup - an interesting finisher to the savoury courses for the night but really, felt just right. Dessert was Japanese glutinous rice balls filled with azumi beans (and topped with it) swimming in Bailey cream. Very decadent yet not too heavy.

Located in a small shopping centre in the middle of the suburbs, it's quite likely no one would think that such a gem would exist here. But it does and it's excellent value. It's a small place which doubles as a fish and chippery between 5-7.30pm (we must go and try as well). After 7.30, it transforms into a highly intimate dining experience. Don't expect fine dining, but it's relaxed and intimate, and most certainly unique.

I wish them all the best and I've already booked my next dinner there!

Best value jap kaseiki cuisine. I've been to marumo at once a month. Each time, the kaseiki menu and culinary experience associated with it was different. I'm always struck by the simplicity n fishiness of the food. The sauces prepared with each dish do not overwhelm the dishes and you can taste the fresh produce itself. Fish & Chips by day but awesome Jap food by night.. Signage outside says "Battered & a'Salted Fish & Chips ". I think they're in the midst of putting another signage up for Marumo Japanese Kitchen.

Have yet to try their fish and chips but I heard that the batter is like the jap tempura batter so it's light and crispy.

Ive been there twice for the Jap dinner and will definitely be back especially with their opening special at $35 for a 7 course meal! Due to the size of the place and being a fish and chips joint by day, the dinners can only start at 7:30pm (by BOOKINGS only). They can only take dinner bookings of 6 to 12 people max. Top quality food and to be honest I think it's an insult to the chef that they're charging only $35! The quality of the food is much better than any other Jap place in Perth by far. Everything was fresh, beautifully presented and service was great!

Brought friends who had dietery requirements which I mentioned when I booked it in and they catered for it with no questions asked. They catered for my 4 yr old niece as well when I went there with my family.

We were asked if we wanted japanese tea or water to start off with. Then the first course came not long after and we had 2 hours of great food with great company.

It felt as though it was your personal chef cooking for your private dinner guests, as you could see him behind the counter working his magic.

See the photos for the dishes I had!

I would much rather be back here (even if their opening special price increases) than any other Jap restaurant in Perth. It's a small casual restaurant (think Fish and Chip joint but with some decorations around) but the best Jap food I've tasted - almost comparable to Japan!

Top Notch!. This humble fish & chips is a masquerade for a home-style Japanese kitchen, offering some popular Japanese menu items as well as their regular F&C. We tried their regular battered fish & was impressed wih the light & crunchy, tempura style coating. Chips were good too!

But their pièce de résistance is their degustation set meal offered for dinner by bookings only. Partly because this small cosy place can only sit 12 (?) & partly because the chef can concentrate on serving dinner customers after the F&C crowd has subsided....

Having tried their 7 course degustation twice so far - we can say it's definitely value for money, fresh & very delicious! Portion size & timing of dishes were great! And presentation was simple elegance.

Some of the dishes we really liked were:
- Japanese style spinach salad - who would have thought spinach was THIS GOOD?!
- Soft shell crab - crunchy & moorish
- Hokkaido scallops - part of the sashimi platter - it was to die for!
- Japanese style beef & potato stew - taste much much better in real life!
- Twice cooked pork belly - enough said!
- Matcha brulee - Green tea brulee - Japanese fusion at its best!

The set menu is seasonal & changes frequently, but you can do special requests ahead of time, & Chef Moe will try to accommodate you! We wanted Wagyu Beef as part of the menu, & for extra $10/pp we had a very yummy dish consisting of Asparagus wrapped in Black Angus Beef & Wagyu Beef. Really really good!

Chef Moe used to work in Hayashi & has great experience in churning out good Japanese food, & now with his own establishment, he can serve top notch Japanese food with his own personal touches & flair. We predict that Marumo Japanese Kitchen may well have to move to a bigger premise in the very near future!

Highly, highly recommended! For $35/head, where can you get this in Perth? Be warned, they book out quite fast now as word of mouth is spreading..... & oh, be sure to allocate at least 2 hours for the degustation dinner. BYO too.

The food at Marumo was fantastic! So why didn't I give them 5/5 you ask? It was because the sous-vide black Angus was just warm (probably because it was cooked using the sous-vide method but I wasn't a fan) and eventhough all the dishes tasted fantastic, the flavours were nothing new. Yes, yes, I always have something to complain about.

Each dish was carefully assembled, beautifully presented and everyone's dish was the same in terms of portion size and presentation which demonstrates Chef Moe's attention to detail. I was a bit worried at the beginning that I won't be full as the first few dishes were quite small but the dishes increased in size as the night progressed and we were all full by the end of dinner.

Omakase comes from the Japanese word makasu (任す), which means "entrust". In this form of dining, instead of choosing your own dishes from an à la carte menu, the chef prepares a series of dishes for you at his discretion. Although the whole point of Omakase is to allow the chef to choose what he think is best for you, it's not impolite to put in a request to omit or favour certain ingredients. Typical characteristics of Omakase are a good selection of the freshest fish, seasonal ingredients and immaculate presentation, all of which were present at Marumo.

A dining experience worth waiting for. After waiting almost 3 years to successfully book a spot for dinner, my wife & I can vouch for the wonderful degustation experience that Chef Moe and his team do at Marumo. From the moment we stepped in, to the time we exit 3 hrs later, we were made to feel welcome. The service was not rushed so allocate at least 2.5-3hrs for the dining. The menu is seasonal and Chef Moe’s winter menu was a winner for us at $80 pp. The restaurant is very intimate and only offer around 20 pp capacity & they were very accommodating to our request to bring our newborn along in a pram so that we can breastfeed our baby between course. The restaurant is BYO, and you will definitely enjoy the 3 hrs dining experience as time does fly when you are with the one you love. All the courses were tastefully curated and delicious, and the only complaint my wife had was that she would have loved more serving of their sashimi and seared Wagyu beef. :) We will be counting down to the next booking opening for their Spring menu. Tips 1: booking is very difficult as the other reviews have already indicated. You just have to keep trying and refreshing your browser when the booking opens on the dot. Tips 2: as it’s only a single seating of up to 3 hrs a night, try to book the earliest 7pm before the other diners arrived at their later booking times if you like to enjoy a bit of quiet time initially.

Fresh tasty food, great value for money and friendly staff. Always look forward to our reservation here, my favourite is the sashimi course. It is Byo too!

Enjoyed an amazing dinner where with 3 friends. I have been trying to get seats in here for ages and my good friend finally managed to get one. Fremantle Octopus and Cucumber. The Octopus was tender and very delicious. Toothfish & Zucchini. My friend loves Patagonian Toothfish, I found it creamy and tender with a sweet flavour. Very nice! The dish needs some thought as eating it with chopsticks was quite difficult, maybe some smaller portions? Smoked Duck and Melon Delicious and it all vanished so fast. Sashimi, OMG we were warned about the freshly ground wasabi but it still just blew me away. They all were fresh and enjoyable. Tasmanian Salmon Belly Sushi. Four pieces? Jusg wasn’t enough. Ha ha Margaret River Yearling Beef, tender cut of beef performed. It was tender and tasted great. Dessert was “Green Tea, Blueberry and Citrus” Green Tea parfait with a blueberry sauce. Yum.
