Review Canton Bay Chinese Restaurant - Perth

Linda Villarba
A hidden gem along Mounts Bay Road. Canton Bay Restaurant is one of the best Chinese Restaurant in Perth. Manager Karen is very accommodating and will do anything to meet your needs when booking. Staff are friendly and food is top notch. Only thing is parking can be a problem in the area. Will definitely recommend this restaurant.

Canton Bay on Mounts Bay Road is hands down the best Chinese restaurant in Perth. We have been there for dinners, get-togethers and birthdays for the past 4 years and have always been delighted by their consistently delicious food, warm service and cosy ambience 👌â˜ș

First time came here and it was for chinese new year dinner. The food were overall average, just OK. The place was good for fancy or romantic dinner, eventhough a bit tight between one table and another table. The lion dance was quite difficult to perform. The only stand out point is the excellent service from the lady boss. She accommodated special requests from my pre-order, and she is friendly! The staff are friendly too. 4 stars for her and team.

A pleasant Chinese restaurant along Mounts Bay road, with great food and ambience. This place presents as a great alternative to heading into Northbridge, and the food itself is top notch. The staff are friendly and helpful as well, and Karen the manager is very hospitable.

Shark Fin serving poor quality and expensive. Firstly, how unethical to sell shark fin in this day and age. Secondly, the other meals they serve are barely worth $10 let alone $25. Photos of a dish including in season vegetables enclosed. What a joke Save yourself extreme disappointment and money, and walk 15 mins or so to the amazing indian restaurant Annalakshmi where you pay what you want and you get good quality food.

We had a beautiful dinner with great service and a reasonably priced wine list. This is truly a hidden gem that deserves the good reviews it has received. We did have some difficulty booking online, but persisted through The Fork app. So glad we did. The place was clean and well maintained.

Excellent food, prepared with care. Nice quieter atmosphere. Would definitely recommend! It’s a little tucked away, but look for the bottom of Jacob’s Ladder.

The dumplings and pork bun is so delicious! We will definately come back soon! 😍

Foods are constantly good. We love dimsum and this is one of the best dimsum you can find in Perth. Our favourites are the Pork Bun and Chicken Feet. They have opened a branch in Westfield Carousel, but I think this original one is still the best. It's always super busy and expect slow service on those rush hours.

Had a beautiful meal here with my family. Friendly staff and very good service. The portion sizes were good and I would certainly return in the future

Have been to this restaurant for several times for dinner and their cooking are very consistent. We ordered soup seafood and taste was great not overpowered with seasoning, no fishy smell at all, really subtle. Other dish was snow crab noodle with superior sauce..this was "damn good". The crab was really fresh, you can tell by eating the meat, sweet and flaky. The superior sauce just great and tasty enough but not overpowering the crab it self. We also ordered Golden Prawn which was tasty and the batter very crispy. Other dishes were stir fry venison and english spinach with garlic. Both of them were not my favorite because the venison meat lack of seasoning, but gravy was nice. and english spinach a bit overcooked even though the taste was nice. Surely will come back here again.

Tiny portions and super over priced for what you pay. Food is only average. Service above average. Place more suited for cashed up professionals that don’t mind over paying for small portions and a quieter Chinese restaurant feel.

super bad service during the busy weekend dim sum time. Dishes are dirty, tables are not wiped. Food are slow...staffs are impatient and showing the attitude....

Came here on a Sunday night for dinner. To be honest I didn’t really know what to expect walking in here as I haven’t really heard much about this place.

When we first walked in the restaurant was quite empty with a few small tables with people. If you’re looking for a place with nice food without the chaos of the Chinese restaurant then this is the place you’re looking for. However this does reflect on the prices as they are slightly more inflated.

My favourite dish of the night was the salt and pepper pork ribs. A close second was the shark fin soup but it was a little under seasoned but nothing a bit of vinegar and salt wouldn’t fix. :) the only dish that I didn’t enjoy that much was the seafood clay pot as the seafood that was inside was over cooked but the vegetables were cooked well and still had a crunch to it.

I had a nice experience here

Very nice ambience , staff and food. We ordered crabmeat soup , almond chicken prawn stuffed cake, scallops with ginger and scallop, avocado and pine nuts fried rice , venison stir fry and cod with ginger. Finished it with fried ice cream.

The fried ice cream was average but the rest of the food were good. I have to say it’s slightly over priced.

A small Chinese restaurant tried several times take-aways as it is always busy. First time dine in and with a big party set in the middle of the venue. The food is not bad because we like it not very oily. The flavour in general is not quite strong that also suit our palate. In particular we love the sizzling oysters with ginger and spring onion. The oysters are deep fried lightly and make the texture complicated. The service is nice.

I love Chinese food, especially if it's Cantonese, and had been looking for decent squid tentacles and crispy vinegar chicken since the Red Teapot in Northbridge changed hands a few years back. Well, Canton Bay Chinese Restaurant and Bar does a better chicken... but lesser squid tentacles. The crispy chicken with vinegar sauce (quaintly called "prosperous fragrant chicken" at Red Teapot) had a perfect sweet and sour flavour and the chicken was wonderful - meaty and succulent, not full of hard, gristly pieces. The tentacles also had the right flavours - a perfect mix of chilli and garlic - but it was the batter that let it down. It was crunchy and oily, like you would expect on fish at a suburban fish & chip shop. They would do well to re-think it. Overall, however, it was a good meal and the service was very good. I'll likely return for the chicken. But unless they change the batter, I'll still be on the lookout for somewhere to get good squid tentacles.

The only chinese restaurant in Perth that I truly enjoy the food, whether a simple Chinese dinner, or for a banquet style special occasion. Staff are attentive. The food is fresh and innovative.

If someone ask me a recommendation place for decent Chinese food in Perth. This is the place I would recommend. The ingredients are fresh and the cooking techniques are above average. I would highly recommend the fish soup entry. It tastes really silky smooths and fish still has it's tenderness and freshness. It is middle autumn festival in China. They sometime will give away moon cake as desert for free. The service is in high quality. (you generally don't expect it from Chinese restaurant) The lady who serve us is from Australia, she found a waitress who can speak mandarin and translate my mum's special request. The waitresses are helpful and exceed our expectation. The price is slightly higher than average restaurant, I guess what you get is what you pay for. I will definitely pay another visit in the future.

Terrible portion size for the price you pay. It is actually only half the quantity of food per dish compared to the standard portion of other Chinese
restaurant. Food no big deal.

No parking too. Not coming back !
It was my first time trying this kind of food and even not being my type, I had a good time. The taste was good, but there's some strong sauces that you need to control better, because they can steal the flavour from the whole meal.

Top 2 dim sum reataurants in Perth! The food is always fresh.

Only let down is the rude staff who can sometimes find it difficult to bring your chilli oil (unless you ask for it 50 times)

Get in early to avoid the queue!

Went there for Chinese new year dinner. Food was pretty ordinary, staff are as per usual (unprofessional). Restaurant decor is good, just sad that food is okay. There are plenty of good chinese restaurant around.
Adele
This place was an absolute rip off. We were overcharged and the staff were belligerent. The food is nice however is not worth the money or pain to your wallet. They refused to let is redeeem the Entertainment Book voucher. It was a disgrace and I'll never go back.
Sean
The ambience is fabulous. Only two of us and we order snow crab in a wok with XO noodle. This is the best we ever had! Attentive service! Truly enjoy our dinner.
If you are a soft shell crab lover then this is your spot. Amazingly good and great prices. While I won't be doing a full size blog here I recommend it highly and I will be returning will bells onX

Really like the ambience in this restaurant, alot of private rooms and we'll designed interior. It's great for private dinners or gatherings. Food wise I think it's quite typical of other Chinese restaurants. Noticeable difference in that they offer fried battered king prawns in wasabi mayo, but otherwise standard dishes. Portions are sometimes on the smaller side for certain dishes. However, the service here is quite good, plenty of staff serving customers and they pay attention to detail and ultimately quite friendly.

Fine dining service, clean, good atmosphere. Food are on the pricier end but taste good and they do have uniques dishes that are not commonly found in other Chinese restaurants. Would go there again for special occasions. The only down side is limited street parking
Lesley
Hidden away right next to Jacob's ladder so it is not somewhere you are likely to stumble across by accident and I found the decor very heavy and dark. There are booths for couples which made me feel like I was on a train carriage but the table was too wide for a romantic dinner, in fact we had to talk rather loudly and our voices echoed around the arched roof!
The food however, was lovely. It was a packed Saturday night with a high level of Chinese patrons which is always a good sign.
We had the Peking duck to start which was constructed at our table by the waitress. The duck breast was not shredded so it was tricky to keep it in the wafer thin pancake but it was delicious. We then had Schezuan chicken and Fillet Beef with mushrooms and black bean sauce which were enjoyed with steamed rice.
The bill came to about $60 with the entertainment book voucher so a bit pricey so I am not sure we would go there again but would recommend it for anyone looking for quality Chinese food.
I did notice that the price for a banquet was $55 per head.

This place get quite busy. We made a booking for a large group. Service was quite slow. Waited around 5 minutes before someone came to serve us and took us to our seats. Food also came quite slow for us. But once it started to come out, they kept coming which was probably a good thing because we were starving. The food was quite tasty. We ordered about 10 dishes for the 11 of us. And we were alright. Not really too full. Bill came to about 400+ and we used three entertainment cards to get discounts to about 300. This place is pricey. Probably wouldn't be a regular here for chinese if there were no discounts. Favourite dish is definitely the slated egg yolk fish, braised pork dish and the almond chicken.

Please be aware that this restaurant may charge you differently to their menu. I have ordered dishes from here on two occasions and the first time I was told a different price from the menu because they have recently "updated" the menu. Yet the strange thing is the second time they reverted back to their old price on the dish I got the first time. The second time I went they also tried to charge me $10 more than what's on the menu. Normal wait person hesitated before telling me the real price. Instead they asked me how much I paid last time. Very strange experience and definitely left feeling cheated.

Really looking forward to spending some quality time with my hubby after busy week. Booked a table for 2 for 6.30. Asked to place food and drinks order before we had even opened menu. Asked a further 3 times in space of 5 mins. Food very good but asked to vacate our table within 40 minutes. Made to feel like an inconvenience. Very disappointed as I had raved about this restaurant
Edward
Still Perth's best Chinese meal. Hidden and overshadowed by the surrounding apartments, it does feel fleetingly like a back street of Kowloon. An interesting wine list and still BYO with very good wine glasses.

Two super dishes on the night - a steamed fish and rice dish - comforting and soft - ginger and garlic infused rice and delicate just so fish. Then pork belly with preserved vegetables and steamed buns (the steamer just out of the picture). I think this was $26 for the pork and seven buns. Superb.
Lulu's Opinion
We got takeaway from this place tonight. The food was okay. It was tasty enough, but it wasn't anything to write home about. I ordered the Mongolian beef and the dish had a layer of oil on the top.

A delightful dining experience good service a well presented tasty food. Dined out with friends a very enjoyable night.
The table service was exceptional
This place is a great place to visit for good cantonese food if price isn't an issue.

Service is attentative and is what you expect for fine dining. The food is great but slightly pricey compared to standard perth chinese food.

Parking is also a hassle so it might not be an ideal place if you've got a large group all driving separately.

I've been here twice and food-service wise, I haven't been disappointed.
PerthfectBreakfast
The service was attentive and great, our wine and water glasses were topped up continuously throughout the night.... but food wise, it was just fancy pants sweet and sour pork (a smaller serve and a heftier price tag).

I agree with previous posts that the Peking duck pancakes are some of the best in Perth. Chilli pepper crispy whitebait was very moorish.

Satay chicken and mongolian lamb was riddled with onions. just onions. no other vegetables. Fat san chicken (Crispy skin chicken on the bone with spicy vinegar sauce) was delicious and decided to order the "canton bay traditional sweet and sour pork" for shiz n giggles and it was just regular white mans sweet n sour pork. They didn't even get the balance of the sauce right, it was way too acidic.

Bill was $190 for 2 people with a bottle of wine. Was absolutely stuffed silly. Nice for a date night splurge especially if you get seated in a private booth complete with mood lighting. The food is nice but it definitely wasn't the best chinese food I've eaten in Perth.

Love it!!!! I cannot believe on the negative reviews!!
What a pleasing experience. Beautiful food. Pleasant staff. We will be back for sure!!!

Atrocious service.. & overpriced average food. Having booked a table for 6:30, we waited for 40 mins with two hungry children. Not only that, we were asked if we could share a table with a couple. People who arrived after us without reservations, got seated.

The food was average. Have had better food at a chinese place on albany hwy. Heaps better food with good prices.

Absolute chaos! We will not be returning again. There are other chinese in Perth where such atrocious service would not be given.
Bebe
Good service but food is ordinary and expensive

Chinese. Loved the food loved the atmosphere very disappointed in the $15 corkage on my bottle of wine that I opened and poured myself, left a bad taste after a good meal

Easily amongst the best Chinese in Perth. Have been extremely impressed with the quality of the food here, having visited twice in the last week. I have tried many Chinese restaurants across Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. Canton Bay is one of the best I have tried. I find meat quality to be an issue at some Chinese restaurants, but the quality here is excellent. Would recommend the squid.
Kathy
Great food. Really yummy food, terrible atmosphere due to inexperienced staff who are over doing the service by interrupting every few minutes. We have been here a few times & love the soft shell crab & the Shangai chilli beef.
James
Undercooked & poor quality meat. Very disappointed with the standard of meat and the undercooked nature of THREE main courses - chicken, pork and beef. Huge lack of parking too- had to do three circuits of the area until finding a space! Will not be returning.

A secret Asian delight for a family birthday. Our group of 7 decided to try out Canton Bay Chinese Restaurant for our dad's birthday dinner because of the good reviews from our friends.
It was truly an excellent hidden gem for a special occasion, as it's almost 3 years since it's open, and we have only just tried it, despite being locals.
From the moment I booked online via Dimmi with a special request for my dad's birthday, the manager was kind enough to call me to confirm my requirement. Even though I didn't take up the offer of a private dining suite for our group because of the extra costs, the manager surprised us pleasantly by giving us a private suite anyway complimentary when we arrived. It just got better from then on. Most of the diners were Asians, which is always a good sign for an Asian restaurant.
Our group tried Fish Broccolis $23.80, Stuff Yam Duck ($28.80). Peking spare ribs ($20.80), EFU Vegetarian noodles $14.80, toothfish goji ($36.80), steam stuff tofu ($22.80) & rice for all.
All the food we ordered were promptly cooked with authentic taste to match. Even my usually critical parents and siblings were complementing on the taste!
The only small area for improvement would be the service during peak times. We had to ask for the teapots to be refilled several times but they were clearly busy I understand. Perhaps a service buzzer at each table? Overall, we were also pleasantly surprised with the costs too. With quality vs costs vs service, we would definitely return again.

Very expensive and environment isn't good.

Canton Bay Chinese is by far the best Chinese restaurant around I have been there several time all of which have been the best Chinese ever!

Done Like a Dinner. Our party of 13, had a "banquet" (more like a famine). About half as much food as would normally be expected left all of the men quite unsatisfied. Would have had twice as much if we had ordered individual dishes off the menu.
First Chinese banquet ever in which NO rice was served. At all.
Food quality acceptable but hardly exceptional.
Glacial service- took over 90 minutes to be served any food. Had to wave arms repeatedly above head to attract wait staff, several of who spoke no English.
Afterwards realised we had paid $9 for each bottle of water, $5 for a Diet coke, etc
Will never go there again- avoid.

"Gripe". I lament for the other diners that rated this restaurant so highly. The worst aspect was not having stand and wait for approximately 40 minutes for a pre- booked table at 7pm. It was not the starter of Drunken Chicken which lacked any presentation. It was not having a 15 minute wait between the first 5 main courses and the second 3 mains at at a table of 8, thus allowing the shared fried rice dishes to go cold, which is very poor form in any ones book. It was not the very bland taste of the Queensland Cod served with vegetables (plural) which consisted of mainly broccoli. It was: the foul odour that emanated from the kitchen that other patrons commented on with surprised concern. 1 Star! Good luck in getting a parking space.

Marcus. I have eaten at the Canton Bay about 15 times........it is just fabulous. I have taken many friends and they all loved it too. Best Chinese in Perth and quite possibly Australia. The food is just such good quality and cooked to perfection every time. It's a quirky environment but I like it and I find the team always very helpful although they sometimes get a little busy when they are full. I would recommend as a must try.....in fact I'm going to go again tonight !!

I would pay a quarter the price for a basic Chinese restaurant and would get a far better food or service. Lamb sizzling was almost cold and other dishes came far apart from each other. They did not have the wine i ordered and the wine i chose was like it was opened for days.
i would never go back.

Bemusing.. Decided that although they deliver as far out as belmont, they would not deliver to mt lawley. idiotic.

I went for dinner last night with my lovely wife after we both had a tough week. We were greeted with a wonderful booth, friendly service and most importantly great food. Perfect way to start the weekend.

Home delivery...yesss!. It's a cold Friday night, no food in the house so happy face when a search of Menulog turned up Canton Bay's extensive menu, including wines. I've eaten at the restaurant on more than one occasion but having it delivered to the door and eating the delicious, hot pork ribs and honey chicken in home clothes and uggs was a top way to end a busy week. The order was placed online, a text message confirmed it was on its way and within an hour I was tucking in. I'll be doing that again!

Best Chinese food

Love this place. What's not to like about it? Great food, service and ambience and all at a reasonable price. Food is consistently good. Love its location as this gives the restaurant a special 'hidden gem" feel. Better quality and presentation than many other higher priced restaurants.

Typical Oz Chinese. We tried Canton after reading the rave reviews. Based on that we went with high expectations and were left a bit disappointed. Granted, the food is better than your average suburban Chinese, but a Mr Wong it ain't. The menu is extensive but you'll still be finding Oz Chinese dishes from the 70s like Sweat n Sour Pork. If I lived close, Canton would probably become a decent takeaway option, but I don't and for me it's not a big enough step away from the Chinese restaurants of my childhood to warrant a return. Staff were nice and ambiance is fine.

Just like Hong Kong!. He Says: Best Drunken Chicken!

She Says: Fine Cantonese cuisine. Reminds me of the good food in Hong Kong.

Rate: 8.5/ 10

Can we go back tomorrow?. My husband and I tried this place for the first time 2 nights ago and haven't stopped talking about it since. After Grand Palace closed down we never thought we'd find anywhere that compared but this place had us grinning ear to ear with each dish.

Service was efficient and the food was truly wonderful. We genuinely cannot wait to go back.

We had the duck pancakes for entree (and we are BIG duck pancake fans) and these were the best we've ever had. The wasabi prawns were big and juicy and exactly what we hoped they would be (very similar to those served at Grand Palace). The beef with macadamia nuts and garlic sauce was tender and had a lovely barbequed flavour and the scallop and avocado rice was simply divine; It was loaded with plump, perfectly cooked scallops and chunky fresh avocado. I don't think I will ever be able to eat rice anywhere else after tasting that.

Overall, I cannot believe we only just found this place. Wonderful, wonderful food and highly recommended!

Best Chinese in WA. Have missed good Chinese. Moved to W A. 15 years ago and haven't had a good Chinese since.
This Chinese is excellent, loved every dish and we ordered nine . Also ordered 5 entrees , also all good , 4 desserts, still good.

If you want Chinese this is the place to go.
Cat
Excellent Chinese. This place is amazing. We have eaten here several times, and are never disappointed. Excellent delivery service too, which only charges 5 dollar delivery charge. The traditional crispy skin chicken is delicious, so is the stir fried fish with ginger & spring onion as well as tofu clay pot just to mention a few.

So. Much. Yum.. After reading the reviews, I had higher-than-normal expectations for this Chinese Restaurant, and I'm happy to say that I was thoroughly impressed with the food, service and interior of this hidden treasure.

We chose to be seated in a booth, which was so comfortable. The lady asked me if the table was too high (because I am pretty short) which was really nice! Entree was Crispy-Skin Chicken with Wasabi - To die for! The chicken was tender and juicy, Wasabi flavour complimenting without overpowering. Mains of Stir-Fried Lamb with Ginger and Shallots and Deep fried King Prawns with Shanghai sauce were both flavoursome and cooked perfectly. Seasonal Veggies were fresh and crisp and the Fried Rice had actual prawns in it (as opposed to the small shrimp).

Service was outstanding, with the owner checking us to make sure we were happy with our meal, staff were friendly and on our way out, one of the waiters held the door open for us!
A very enjoyable night and can't wait to dine here again.
David
Quality. Really enjoyed the food.
A little bit more expensive than other places but well worth it.
5 stars!
Allie
Not your average chinese. Have not been here since Sept last year and the food was great. Tonight was no different. Service to begin with a bit slow but then picked up. Yes, you pay a bit more than your local chinese restaurant but the food is certainly worth it.

Excellent!. Went with a girlfriend & we found the food & service to be of the highest standard. Had Spring Rolls, Stir fried prawns with veg & cashews, deep fried lemon chicken and Canton prawn special fried rice - all fantastic and what you'd expect to find in a high class Chinese restaurant. Finished off with the deep fried red bean pancake with ice cream - delicious!!
I'm coming back for sure!!
Colleen Everald Treloggen
Disappointed. We went here having 2 "our deal" coupons which would cover a table of 4 people. Whilst the voucher had restrictions on how many dishes you could pick (ie. 1 entree between 2, 2 mains), when they took our order, they said that the whole table must have the 2 mains, instead of a choice of 4 mains (as there were 2 coupons). Nowhere in the coupon did it state this, if we had booked 2 separate tables for 2, we could have ordered 4 different mains and had our conversation from a distance! Not only that, they brought out only half the portion size of entree which we pointed out and they realised their mistake and brought the rest of it. Instead of being ushered into the main room area, where most people were being seated, we we put in a side room which is very quiet, blocked off and depressing, and other customers were only seated there later in the evening when there was no more space in the main section. The entree was very bland, the best dish was the prawn dish followed by the special fried rice. We also decided to pay extra for dessert, ordered 2 fried icecreams (both were pre-prepared and served cold, not fried on order which was also disappointing), the banana and jackfruit fried roll with icecream which was TINY! and the other which was the best of them all, the red bean pancake with icrecream which was a tasty big serving. We would definitely not come here again.

Excellent. Arrived at 130 Mounts Bay Road and first impressions were not good. The building looked like a dodgy motel and at first could not find the restaurant until we walked around the side. The entrance however was a lot nicer than the building it was attached to and when we got inside we were very impressed. It was Friday lunch and there was no one inside (literally no one), but we were soon met by a lady who sat us in a really nice 2 person booth. I presented my voucher (Scoopon type) and was told that they hadn't been given the codes by the company and she seemed quite confused as to whether she could accept it or not as the voucher meal was a set menu and they hadn't prepared for it. Given we were the only people in the restaurant I couldn't see the problem, but to their credit they sorted it out and accepted our voucher. We had spring rolls for entree and we went with the honey king prawns and the lamb for mains which came with stir fried rice and a serving of vegetables - Amazing. Everything we had was outstanding, the freshness, size and quality and we left more than satisfied. How this place was empty on a Friday lunch is beyond me. Will definitely go back again and highly recommend it.
Pris
Yummy food, good service. The only complaint I have is the low ceilings in the restaurant (part of a serviced apartments) - feels cramped and claustrophobic.

Food is good - special almond chicken prawn, yam duck, lobster yeefu noodles are yummy. Seafood is fresh and service is good.

Amazing! Fantastic service and beautiful food. We will definetly go again :-)

Very impressed with prawn cocktail that included real prawns (not shrimp). Other dishes of boneless chicken black bean sauce, traditional sweet sour pork & chicken rice abalone sauce were also extremely tasty. Great service & relaxing environment make for a top dining experience.

PERTH ASIAN FOOD AND CULTURE GROUP. Yet another great restaurant, we had excellent service, were given a private room for our group of 5 people, Staff were very friendly, and helpfull with specials, And very very Seeing eye dog friendly..

5 Attended, we ordered a duck pancake each for entree's, and it has to be one of the best duck's i have tried - usually they are too dry, but this was nice an moist and tender. Then ordered 6 mains and with 2 entertainment cards, for discount we paid $35.00 each.

A very nice enjoyable night, and as we were leaving, i noticed the noise limit was great in the main restaurant, and guest's looked very relaxed too. We will return sometime - Thanks Canton Bay

70th bday do. Fantastic! Sam & Karen's team did an excellent job with the quality of food and service. Karen took the trouble to return phone calls to get things right, staff was friendly, food was simply delicious even for those not-on-the-menu dishes! Couldn't ask for more! Full marks guys!

Great Find. We were so pleased to have found a Chinese restaurant that produced such lovely food in stylish, understated surroundings
We had several very good Cantonese restaurants near where we lived in the Uk and we were very spoiled so were doubly pleased to find this little oasis.
We were greeted in a very friendly manner when we arrived about 10 minutes early for our booking and shown immediately to our table. Our drinks order arrived promptly along with water.
We chose from the $59.00 menu and were very pleased with the ensuing food. The aromatic duck on toast was scrumptious. The tooth fish cooked to perfection as was the fillet steak in wasabe and the king prawns. The flavours were delicate and not cloying and over powering as we have found some Chinese restaurant food to be.
The rice was a meal in itself, with scallops and avocado, absolutely delicious!
We finished with banana and jack fruit in filo with ice cream, a perfect end, along with good coffee to a splendid meal.
We recommended the restaurant to our son and his wife and they visited 3 days later and were similarly impressed.
This will be a "must" stop for us whenever we are in Perth
Elise
Delicious chinese food. My partner and I have either eaten at the restaurant or ordered takeaway many times, as we live close by.

Food: 4.5/5 (delicious range of chinese food - we always order the beef fillet in blakc pepper sauce and wet noodles with shredded duck meat - we also enjoyed the hot and sour soup as well as the duck pancakes, the fried rice and the spring rolls)
Price: 3.5/5 (a bit pricey)
Service: 5/5 (great service, best we've had in Perth, makes me feel like I'm getting 5* treatment)
Atmosphere: 5/5 (great atmosphere, very nice decor and original table set up along the wall)

Could have been better. I decided to hold a family dinner in this restaurant after reading the reviews from Urbanspoon. The food was a hit and miss. There are 2 issues that have caused us dissapointment. Firstly, I ordered 1 serve of the prawn dish and it came out with 10 pieces of prawns. One diner mentioned it to the lady waitress/supervisor about having 10 pieces of prawns on the plate and there's 11 of us. The lady immediately pointed her finger at me saying "asked her to order 1.5 serves but she refused". I was shocked to receive such a response from a so called "uppper class" restaurant. With me being a first time customer in this restaurant, I did not know we would be short of 1 prawn. Although I did upgrade some dishes to 1.5 serves and left the rest as 1 serve (including the prawns), I find her actions inappropriate to wiggle her finger at the paying customer and to respond in such manner.
Second dissapointment was our fish dish. The size of the fish is enough to feed a maximum of 2 people, and as mentioned, there's 11 of us. No one has advised us/me that they do not have a whole fish big enough to feed 11 people, hence would we like to order another dish to replace that dish. It was an embarassment for me who was hosting the dinner.

Good food, friendly service, decent price and ready quick. Would return.

Lovely Birthday Dinner. Celebrated our daughter's birthday at the Canton Bay. Staff very welcoming and friendly. We were really impressed with the service, decor (not the usual) and the food was delicious! The deep fried squid with chilli pepper and salt was fabulous. Were told there'd be a short delay in getting the bill and then they brought out a complimentary dessert (with candle) and sang a few bars of happy birthday to the birthday girl which was really sweet. We'll be back.

Despite all the great reviews on urbanspoon about Canton Bay we sadly found this place lacking. Alot of people have compared this establishment with the now disfunct Grand Palace, and there is no comparison. Grand Palace had exceptional food and unfortunately Canton Bay does not. It is by far mediocre and very similar to what you would find at City Garden or Billie Lees. We went on Thursday night and was seated promptly. The service is very amateurish even for Perth. We started off with bottle of Chapel Hill Shiraz ($34). The still tasi water from Tasmania ($6). The waitress poured our wine into our glasses and splashed wine all over the wooden table, looked at it and lefted. We thought she had lefted to get a cloth to clean up the spillage but never returned. Finally i couldnt stand it and used tissuea from my bag yo clean up the mess. So not a smooth start. We had the chicken sweet corn soup ($6.80) which was very watery and chicken was chewy so definetely not good start. The Peking duck pancakes ($5.80 each minimum 4 pieces) was bland. The skin of duck was crispy the duck was bit dry but strangely the pancake which looked really good coming out of a bamboo steamer was cold. It was served with cucumber, spring onions and lettuce. For mains we had beef fillet and broccoli ($24.80), prawns In egg yolk ($32.80), salt and pepper pork ribs ($20.80), small prawn fried rice ($8.80) and steamed rice ($2.00). The prawn dish was disappointing. The salted egg yolk batter was bland and had a floury taste to it when it should be salty and yolky. The beef was so oily and it left an oily aftertaste on the palate. The salt pepper pork rib was very chewy and the oil taste came through the batter not the salty peppery taste that it should of been. I must question the oil that the chefs are using because it tastes quite bad or they are using the oil far too long. We were offered dessert and coffees but we declined. All in all $159.20 for 2 people for a bad Chinese meal. We probably won't come back or recommend to our friends as we feel for the price, service and food there are plenty places out there that are better.

Found! ...the replacement for Grand Palace. The front is not so imposing but the modern decor is very attractive with some intimate settings. The Crabmeat Sharkfin Soup was light & clean with plenty of crabmeat . The steamed Spotted Cod was steamed to perfection...not a minute more, not a minute less. The Stir Fried Pearl Meat was exceptional and the asparagus was so fresh. Accompanied this with lovely glass of Spanish Albarino.

Exceptional!. Dined with friends at the Canton Bay Saturday September 2nd. Not only was the quality of the cuisine and service exceptional, we could comfortably converse across the relatively large round table. So rare these days to find a restaurant that's quiet. A most enjoyable evening!

A hidden gem in the city...surprise with the decoration when walk into the restaurant....really nice place! Service is tip top and foods are superp!! Really like the lobster cooked with supreme sauce and egg noodle. But my favourite is the wasabi beef!! 10/10!! Will definitely go again!

Hidden Gem. With the demise of the outstanding Grand Palace in the CBD, my fellow suits and I have been looking for a nice chinese restaurant close to work to take our Clients for lunch. Whilst Googling, I came across the Canton Bay and read the flattering remarks and tried it yesterday for lunch with some important Clients. We were not disappointed with great food, attentive service and a well priced drinks list. A little hard to find as it's tucked away, but well worth the effort.

Something a little different - service in a Chinese restaurant!. We visited Canton Bay Chinese Restaurant on the recommendations of Urbanspoon reviews near the Perth CBD area. It is a quaint little Chinese restaurant that has been in operation for approximately a year, located at the bottom of the Jacob's Ladder at 130 Mounts Bay Road. Quite hidden away as we did not know it existed! The restaurant is also in the 'gold card' section of the Entertainment book which offers 25% off up to $45 which is also valid for banquet menu.

Parking is in the adjacent Mount Hospital patient carpark or the side of the street and can be a little hard to find if you did not know where to find it.

Initial impressions on entry were pleasant. We were politely shown to our table and found this lovely restaurant quiet, unpretentious and had a lovely atmosphere for either a quiet date or a family meal where you can hear each other talk. Something not that usual in a Chinese restaurant!

This is one of those finer restaurants where your meals, if you have opted for a banquet are served to you. The fish maw soup was delightful, not too salty with generous additions of fish maw ... the scallops were a little small and perhaps of the frozen variety but hey, this isn't a $100+ a head banquet! Lovely with the addition of a little vinegar. And the lobster with e-fu noodles more than satisfactory, none too oily and the noodles soft and appealing. Included were the usual utensils and even open wet towelletes to clean your fingers with.

Steamed fish, perhaps perch was a little small but perfectly cooked and already deboned on serving. The braised duck with preserved vegetable steampot was large, with generous portions of braised duck breast and went well with the rest of the banquet. Nothing out of the ordinary for the rest of the dishes, tenderised beef or vegetables...

Service was perhaps a little inexperienced as is common in Perth and not something I would fault. Still better than most chinese restaurants. Our rice bowls were filled for us, but the rice container forgotton and none of us had more than a bowl of rice as a result. Tea didn't arrive but the hot water did. Fresh fruits were appreciated at the end of our banquet as well as a complimentary moon cake (double yolk too!) given the time of year and cut chilli complimentary.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. It isn't as memorable as say ... a 2 Michelin star chinese banquet at a premier restaurant in Hong Kong. That's not a fair comparison. But I would be more than happy to patronise this restaurant again when I want slightly more dignified fare and environment.

Pleasantly surprised. 7/10.

Great dining experience. After reading all the great reviews we bought a Cudo voucher which we used last Wednesday evening. Right from the start it was a most enjoyable experience. A smiling man opened the door on arrival and a lovely smiling girl opened the door when we left. The decor is very elegant and not the usual suburban Chinese look (not that there is anything wrong with that).

We were given a special Cudo menu but didn't mind at all as the available choices were excellent and the regular menu was so big we would still be deciding what to order two days later. We had Peking Duck and a chicken dish as entrees. We had three mains to choose and after much deliberation went for Fillet Steak in black pepper, Fish with Ginger and spring onions and Crispy chicken with black bean sauce. Every dish was delicious and it was obvious quality produce was used and everything had a lovely fresh taste. I can't believe we polished off the lot.

Our Cudo offer also included wine and my husband was very pleased with the bottle of red that was presented. The meal finished with a small coconut dessert each. This was a perfect finish to a perfect meal. The whole time the wait staff were attentive and very friendly. Not once were we made to feel second rate because we had a voucher. This is a restaurant we will revisit even without a voucher. Very impressed.

Best in Perth. This restaurant hidden away on Mounts Bay Road is now teh best in Perth following the unfortunate demise of the Grand Palace. In the past 2 weeks we ate at Yu at Burswood and twice at the Canton Bay. The food and service at Canton Bay was much better and in a very pleasant atmosphere.

A credit to owner Sam Luu, who coincidently walked into the restantant on Monday night while we were dining, proudly holding a Gold Plate the restaurant had just been awarded that night.

Stephen

This restaurant is gorgeous. Beautiful atmosphere, food and staff! Have been to numerous high rated Chinese restaurants in Perth and this one is by far the best! Will be recommending this hidden treasure to everyone I know!

Hidden at the bottom of Jacob's ladder. Located at the bottom of Jacob's ladder is this fine dining chinese restaurant. Fully licenced with a reasonable wine list. Food was authentic and reasonable portion sizes for the price. Nice decor.

The total dining experience.. Sam has transformed the quaint Adelphi into an unbelievable dining experience with the Canton Chinese Restaurant. The stunning design and decor is finished faultlessly and provides an intimate atmosphere. Yet this is nothing compared to the food and the service.
The food is probably the best I have ever had. The portions were plentiful and they all tasted great, especially their signature prawn dish.
The staff were all friendly and well presented and I have never seen an owner more accessable and friendlier than Sam and his wife.
I can not recommend this restaurant more.
I will be returning and you wont deffinately wont be dissappointed.
If youre after something romantic try the booths for 2 they look awesome.

Nice and friendly. Went dinner last night with Cudo $59, the restaurant was full. We had yummy Peking duck, vegetarian spring rolls for entree. Wasabi beef, Deep fried fish with special sauce, and broccoli with king prawns. All the food was spot on. We chose red wine and Chinese tea for drink and went home with full tummy... we will come back, definitely.. and try a banquet for 2!

Wonderful Restaurant. Have been looking for a good and authentic Chinese restaurant for a while, since our favourite closed. We stumbled upon Canton Bay on this website and decided to give it a try - we definitely weren't disappointed. The best meal we have had in recent memory. Blink and you will miss it - not really noticeable from the outside, but the decor inside is lovely - modern chinese? Service is exceptional and the food is to die for. Hubby had scallops for entre and claimed they were the best he has ever had. Sweet & sour pork was delicious and the stir fried fillet steak melted in your mouth. Red bean pancake was a perfect end to a perfect meal. The manager (?) mentioned that they are hoping for a gold plate - absolutely deserved! We are going to make Canton Bay a regular visit.

Thanks to urban spoon we came across this place for our 'last supper' in Perth. Food was amazing, staff were more than helpful and it's very reasonably priced. Want some advice? Try the the sweet and sour pork!! Definitely coming back if I'm ever in the area..... 10/10!!

What a find! A hidden gem!. I was expecting just an average Chinese restaurant but once the door opened and we went inside I was surprised at how lovely it was inside. Really nice decor. The service was so great, best I have had in Perth. The food was amazing. I had stir fried beef fillet steak with broccoli for a main and the beef was so tender. I will be going here again but next time I will dress up a bit more. I had no idea it was more fine dining than casual. There were so many items on the menu I want to try.

Very Enjoyable Night. 8 of us came here for our regular boys dinner catch up. Had quail legs for entree. Ordered 11 mains and majority of the dishes were very tasty. The best dishes were the King Prawns with Wasabi sauce and braised duck with mushrooms. The least favourite were the deep fried tooth fish and e-fu noodle in crabmeat sauce. Nice interior, great service, very decent chinese. We all agreed it was definitely worth trying and definitely worth coming back.

Amazing!. We visited Canton Bay Restaurant on June 2nd, and were absolutely blown away by every aspect of the experience. From the service to the quality of the food, atmosphere and friendly staff it was second to none. To the point where the owner, Sam was waiting and serving tables ensures that the dining experience is well worth it. We will definitely be returning. Thank you for an amazing meal!!

Bloody Beautiful. We never even noticed this hidden beauty tucked away along Mounts Bay Rd, then Cudo offered a voucher and we gave it a try for our Thursday night date night (NO KIDS)and it was fantastic. We have eaten at Canton Bay a few times now and have loved the food, the service and the decor. We drive all the way from the hills right past our favorite local chinese ( Luckys in Midvale) and our mouths water all the way just thinking of the food. Every time we go we look at Jacobs Ladder and say we should go for a walk up there after dinner and enjoy the view. We make 1 flight of stairs and stand there puffing with our full stomachs, laughing. Anyway go check out this hidden gem, get a little booth for 2 and enjoy. You won't regret it, and maybe you might make it all the way up Jacobs Ladder.

Outstanding!! Best Chinese we have ever had, service was impeccable as was the atmosphere and the food was incredible, we were treated like royalty .... And we used a cudo voucher!! ... Can't wait to go back!!

Delicious Meal!. After my mother had visited Canton for a Chinese New Year Feast and all the diners raved about it, we decided to take her there for her birthday. Although it looks like nothing special from the outside, the decor inside was a pleasant change from the average Chinese restaurant as it was very elegant. We got excellent service all night, from the waitress who recommended two types of wines we would enjoy, and even let us try them before purchasing a glass, to the owner who recommended us what special dishes he thought we should try. The stand out of the night was the Snow Crab made in Singapore Chilli style - it was AMAZING! Do not be turned off by the price, you get a massive portion (the three of us were quite full just from the crab!) and it was cooked to perfection, with the most magnificent sauce - definitely one of the best crabs I've ever had. You also got traditional Singaporean bread to soak up all the amazing sauce! We also had the schezwan soup (which was delicious!), a steamed fish and mushrooms stuffed with prawns. I really enjoyed the fish, however my parents where quite partial to it, while they absolutely loved the mushrooms! Nonetheless, we were all very satisfied and thoroughly enjoyed our meal, and although it wasn't cheap, you definitely get what you pay for! Will definitely be back soon!

Excellent!. We went in on a Cudo voucher with little expectations and, frankly, thought the good reviews were put in by their friends. We were plesantly surprised at the lovely decor. The quality of the food was good enough for fine dining and came in generous portions. The service was superb and they made us feel welcome. Enjoyed every dish and specially loved the Wasabi beef. It's good enough to think of a return visit - even at full fare.

A Gem in the Chinese Fine Dining scene. Heard a very good review of this place a few days ago so I snapped up the Cudo voucher when It was offered. We had Two portions of Peking Duck, and instead of normal pancake, it was serve atop a slice of fried mantou (type of bun). Delicious! We also had a portion of Sang Choy Bao to share and the filling was robust and full flavoured with finely diced chicken and veg. For mains, we had steak in wasabi flavoured sauce, fish with spring onion and ginger as well as king prawns with brocolli, washed down with a bottle of red wine. oh, and a portion of mango pudding each too. The food was certainly cooked with refinement and a far cry from your usual Chinese restaurants. A sophisticated Chinese dining experience indeed! Throughly enjoyable experience and will certainly return. Great service too.

Best Chinese in town, great decor, also benefits from a full licensed underground bar which is great for pre drinks or an after work drink

My fiancé was excited to take me to this restaurant and we went on the eve of Chinese New Year. We went in looking forward to a nice meal and came out greatly disappointed. Food was way too pricey and service was non-existent! We waited for more than 20 minutes without service. We had almost wanted to walk out before we finally got one of the server's attention. The tea was cold, and the food was merely okay and nothing special for the exorbiitant prices that they charged, which was disappointing. And to add further insult to the disappointment, as we were exiting the restaurant after we settled the pricey bill, the waiter who served us came after us, having forgotten where we were seated and tacklessly in front of other guests asked if we have paid for our meal! Definitely not a pleasant experience and definitely won't be going back for a 2nd time.

SENSATIONAL. After looking on urbanspoon for a great chinese restaurant to take my parents to I stumbled across the Canton Bay Chinese. OMG what a delight.... The duck entree followed by Wasabi Beef, Chicken in Vinegar and Garlic, Peking Pork, Spicy King Prawns and of course the fried rice were all equally fresh, generous serves and delicious. The wine selection was great, the decor was modern and not tacky like a normal chinese and the wait staff were attentive and provided great service... It is a rare find that you have all in one restaurant but this restaurant has no teething problems many new restaurants suffer.. My only disappointment was that it was almost empty... Come on Perth where are you when you actually have some quality food around....

Wonderful food, excellent service, well priced, up market, very nice decor and atmosphere. Banquet for 2 was beautiful, fresh and very well presented. Wasabi beef was fantastic. Ample wine list and reasonably priced. Mayella from Mexico, was a pleasure, helped choose a nice wine. Thoroughly enjoyed the night and would definitely recommend Canton Bay, we will be back.

Hmm very yummy !. The cool things about this place is, you can just walk in here ,tell them what you generally like and dislike , the chef will then prepare a nice delicious meal for you.

You will find some very unique dishes that you can't find in Perth. Not your tradition Chinese food. more like a fusion restaurant.

Everything is very nice, in particular.. prawn avocado fried rice. !!! omg that is yummmyyy !!!!

The place is very nicely renovated too.

WOW ..what a find. Tried Canton Bay after a festive wine night with Barwick Wines and were blown away with the decor, service and quality of food. Food selection and quality was great, good wine selection and service professional.
Liked the ambience that provided privacy and suble lighting not often found in chinese restuarants that seem to be usually bright lights and large rooms.
We will be back

Great foods. This is the Best Chinese restaurant I'd never had... Good stuff

Canton Bay Chinese Restaurant and Bar is located on Mounts Bay Road, just near Jacobs Ladder as you enter the city. It’s located within the Adelphi Hotel Apartments as space is a little cramped with the hospital, apartments, and the hill directly behind it with arterial roads passing through. There is limited on street parking or metered parking at the Mounts Hospital after 6pm. They also offer takeaway. The restaurant specialises in Cantonese

the banquet is really good in value. Generous serving and tasted good too! The whole dining experience was nice and relaxing.

Invisible from the street, a modern day den at the base of Jacob's ladder. The ceiling is low, patterned with hexagons, and once inside you feel disconnected and removed. It's like a bomb shelter with Cantonese food, thankfully there's a bar and the option to BYOB. We had pre ordered a family favourite. Eight treasure duck. . . I think it's been more than a decade since we last shared one. It's a spectacle and comfort; a plump, mostly deboned duck, swimming in sauce, stuffed with treasure. Lotus seed, red dates, barley, shiitake, I'm sure there were four more. . . The other dishes too were well done. The fried starters (the now ubiquitous soft shell crab) crisp and spiked with aginomoto, the steamed fish moist, the stir fried vegetables cooked to the tooth. http://feeds.feedburner.com/WinoSapien Click here for the original context

The menu is extensive and it took us a while to choose three dishes to share, plus steamed rice. First, stir-fried squid with spicy Szechuan sauce (AU$23.80), topped with a smattering of roasted peanuts. The pieces of squid were smooth and tender, all bodies, no tentacles, with a shiny coating of sauce. Chilli wusses and chilli heroes can all enjoy this dish – wusses (me, me!), just don’t chomp on those wrinkly dried chillies.

...the experience at Canton Bay was excellent, and I would definitely not hesitate to come back for more fresh fish, stuffed yam duck and some of that awesome red bean pancake!
