We had a great meal here. Majority of what we ordered was tasty, some even more than others. The dessert was average although it wasn't bad, it just lacked the coconut cream. My fave were the fish cakes and the roasted duck with lychee in red curry. The spicy beef was pretty good too. The cheap cocktails are good, the pina colada was great.

Food tasted great and delicious. Dishes we enjoyed- Spring Rolls, Chicken Wings, Vietnamese Rice Noodles and Prawn Clay Pot. All the dishes were well seasoned and full of flavour, and ingredients used were fresh. The Roast Duck with Egg Tofu was nice; just slightly heavy on the salt for us.
The other criticism we have is the ratio of meat/seafood to vegetables & onions was off. Dishes came out looking generous in size, but really it's because they've been plumped up with loads of mixed vegetables like capsicums, carrots and onions. Our Prawn Claypot had 5 prawns and for $27.90, we did expected more.
Overall, a pleasant dining experience.

This is my all time favourite Vietnamese. I really only ever get takeaway but the food is absolutely superb. Huge fan of the chicken lettuce cups, Tom yum soup and pad Thai. The food is so very and tasty, definitely worth trying
One way I get ideas of where to eat is to scroll through the Entertainment book. There's something very satisfying when you redeem an Entertainment book voucher! As I was scrolling through the book one night for dinner ideas and Mr. T drove around the city aimlessly, we decided on Southern Star. It's near Mr. T's office so he has always wanted to try and they have 25% off offer in Entertainment book! It was like the southern stars aligned for us!
Good service, great food. A bit too expensive for Thai food but we really enjoyed the food. The padthai and fried kweyteow was just okay but their saigon chicken was the best!
Had my 21st birthday dinner there last night. The food and service there was amazing! There were 23 of us there for the dinner, everybody had fun and the view outside the restaurant is awesome!!!
Awesome food! We came here on a scoopon so it was free. Looked a tad pricey but it's in the city so no big surprise. Great satay and pad Thai. Will definitely be coming back! Pleasantly surprised!
We enjoyed the food here. Although not a great variety, but full of flavours. Our best dish of the night is the barramundi cooked in satay sauce. The duck and lychee curry was nice but quite salty. The Saigon chicken had crispy skin and flavoursome. Our least favourite dish is the pad thai, not as much flavours as the other dishes.

Went there last night with a group of 11.. Entree's shared were amazing , especially the salt and pepper squid. Main we also shared, food came out at a very reasonable pace, service was good . Main highlights was the duck curry with lychees and quail eggs was an absolute winner and the Chicken off the bone was too.Chicken stir fry and veggies was also a hit .Salads were fresh and tasty, and we would return for sure ..
4 star rating is for the food-not the service. Lemon and pepper chicken- beautifully balanced flavours. Fresh mint mint in the salad added a lovely refreshing contrast. Crispy blossom cups are also a treat-like a deconstructed spring roll. $8 cocktails and reasonably priced beverages all round. Decent serving portions of food also. Would have rated 5 except for the service being a bit slow and erratic -food seems to come out as it is ready which doesn't bother us as we share everything- had to cancel 2nd main as it took too long to come out. The staff were very friendly though. Will definitely be back for the food!

My favourite dish is the Vietnamese Grilled Chicken Salad at $16.90. It is very tasty and filling.
There's not much wrong with this star of a. place. It's open and bright, with a view of the river, not too crowded, with friendly service and very good food. The lunch price is extremely reasonable for a dine in place. We enjoyed a tasty steamed chicken with salad and rice (a light and fresh meal) and pad Thai noodles (tasty with plenty of chicken and prawns). My only criticism would be that our food came out about 5 minutes apart (I noticed this happened on the table beside us too). Give it a go ... It's almost a 5 star spot.
Been there twice, really great customer service, nice set out. I don't usually eat fish, but I enjoyed their fish cake entrée. Would defiantly recommend to anyone who enjoys Vietnamese food.
Took a while to get the attention of service staff to order or get our bill. Bit pricey for Asian, and not a huge amount on the plate considering the cost per dish. Otherwise a great meal.

Hearing good things about this restaurant from the in-laws we decided to try it out & we were not disappointed. First impressions were a little shaky, with bright lighting and simple furniture but the food made up for that. For entrée we sampled the pork spring rolls, lots of meat not many vegetables but very yummy. We also had the "salt and pepper" squid, for $17.90 it was a huge serving but definitely not salt and pepper, just battered deep fried. I would not order this again. For mains we had, green chicken curry, again a huge serve! It was a very sweet curry with a nice spicy kick to finish, great amount of chicken and fresh vegetables! My husband ordered the chefs special, roast duck and lychee red curry. It was amazing! Perfectly cooked duck breast served in an amazing red curry sauce! It's a must try! If you after a quick no fuss Asian meal I highly recommend this restaurant, but do not expect authentic Vietnamese it's more a fusion of many Asian cuisines but delicious none the less.
I guess the name of the restaurant says it all – “Modern”, not authentic, Westernised Vietnamese cuisine. While disappointed not to be eating the real thing, the fusion or mix of dishes from neighbouring countries, provided several dishes with interesting flavours. A lovely restaurant with a range of tasty dishes, wide open space, friendly service and takeaway also available.

It appears that this restaurant get some really mixed reviews. Not uncommon I guess, people have all sorts of expectations. I dined last night and loved the red duck curry and tom yum soup. Delicious food, fresh tasting ingredients and at reasonable prices. Staff were friendly, attentive and efficient. I work in the restaurant game and I could easily mention some areas that could be improved, but overall I think this place is great and just what many people want from casual dining - delicious meals served promptly, with friendly service and in a nice location. If I want fine dining, I know all the right places. If I want a place for casual dining any day of the week, this place is on my list. Some of the reviews here are just silly and over the top. Find out for yourself, I guess.
Enjoyable w' Cheap Cocktails. Delicious food for a reasonable price. The menu is not too extensive but it allows for a great feed. The shredded duck salad and roast duck lychee red curry were favourites. I was in for a treat with $8 cocktails - felt like I was on holiday! Great place to catchup with friends over a lovely meal.
Honestly the best green chicken curry I've ever had in my life. Also, they serve WA's No Regrets wine- a must try!
Fast and Fresh!. We popped in on a Saturday night without a reservation and quickly were given a seat, served water and order taken. We were very happy with the taste of everything we ordered: rice paper rolls starter, satay chicken stirfry and coconut rice to share. The food was crisp and fresh (rice paper rolls were maybe a bit on the small side 6 small sushi sized sliced pieces probably from 2 actual rolls - I guess it is a starter though ?) The satay chicken had a nice mix of vegetables and plenty of satay sauce. The coconut rice was also full of coconuty flavor. One odd thing was the waitress asked us if we wanted everything to arrive together and we said yes but first to arrive was the rice paper rolls, second the coconut rice... we sat there for about 5 minutes looking at it wondering when the chicken satay would arrive... Apart from that all good we will definetly be returning. They must have had us in an out in under half and hour and the place was pretty busy.

Very Nice. I stopped in here rather late from coming from a theatre show and was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. Friendly service although a little slow, but it's fresh and tasty authentic Vietnamese. Would recommend this place.

Delicious +++. Rather unkindly we have pretty much never wanted to eat anything in this area after a couple of bad experiences, at other places on this strip.
We are very happy to report that this restaurant changed our mind and we will definitely be returning. We were a party of five, with two very robust diners and we ordered a selection of four dishes and we were all well satisfied. The ginger fish was particularly memorable thick, juicy and fresh ginger smell and taste. Grilled tiger prawns were so good, and the chicken salad crispy and succulent all at the same time.
Terrace Road is not synonymous with terrible food anymore thanks to Southern Star!
Great food. We ate at southern star last Saturday night with our 5 year old daughter, it was our first time here and we will defiantly be back.
Coming from Mandurah that has a serious lack of good restuarants it was such a pleasure to get such great food.
A little slow initially on the service that soon picked up.
The cocktails were fantastic and super cheap at $8 each, I would not of expected such good cocktails at a Vietnamese restuarant but they were perfect.
Highly recommend the birds nest.

My favourite asian restaurant. Ive been to Southern star a couple of times now. the food is great! Big portions and always presented nicely. the atmosphere is great with candles lit at night and tables by the window facing the park and riverside. The price is abit high but for the amount of food portion its worth it! Great location too!
On the first night which is a monday night dining with my friend we had the chicken lettuce cups and the pad thai and pho noodle soup which was amazing the service was not that great. a man just said hello and placed me on a table didnt even ask for a reservation or anything. Staff placed food on my table and didnt even comment on anything and took me about 10 minutes to get their attention to get my friend another drink.
The second night i went which was last saturday night for my birthday with about 7 of us. we had the curry lychee duck, prawns bird nest, shaking beef, vietnamese fried rice, red curry chicken, silken tofu, kteow noodles, blossom cups, spring rolls, paper rolls, duck hot pot and chicken wings which were amazing and great protion size. The staff was very welcoming. We were greeted by a young gentleman who was very nice asking if we were celebrating anything. we then was served by Jenifer who explained the menu which we ended up ordering all the popular foods and she answered all our enquiries very well. she always smiled and even gave us recommendation drinks with the food we ordered! we didnt know which wine to have so she recommended the crowded house for a white and no regrets for a red. She then made a joke about no regrets for a good night tonight which made our night. She looked after us for the whole night always coming back asking if we enjoyed our meal. food was presented nicely on the table and we were so full we were too lazy to get up and pay for our bill so the lovely gentleman came to our table and processed the bill for us! EXCELLENT SERVICE! the only bad thing i would say is how long it takes for the food to come out and the parking otherwise i would recommend this place!

Gluten free Fab!. As pesky folk with food intolerance, dining out in a foreign city is always a gamble. This one paid off! A separate GF menu allowed us to order with confidence. The food was simply sensational! Fresh, tasty, delicious! Lovely efficient service in an elegant setting. A real find thanks to Urbanspoon recommendation. The system works people!!!
Great fresh food good flavour. Went there before a gig at the Concert Hall. Booked out on a saturday night. Sat outside had the beef and lemon grass, mixed vegetables and chicken and satay chicken. Large serves, great flavours, excellent service.

Deals voucher, excellent. We bought a Deals.com.au voucher for $44.00 and went on Saturday night with some friends who also had a voucher which meant we could try a lot more options.... No problem getting a booking when we wanted. Arrived, and the deal was explained to us very clearly....we started with the Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls and Spicy Lettuce Cups and Salt & Pepper Squid....all delicious and freshly cooked and arrived very quickly....we then went onto the salads, which we ordered the Spicy Beef and Spicy Chicken....these were both amazingly fresh and also delicious....we then started on the mains and ordered the Double Shot Chicken, Sizzling Beef, Prawn Clay Pot and Satay Chicken with two varieties of fried rice, Vietnamese and Chicken....everything was absolutely gorgeous and fresh and tasty and the quantities were HUGE!!!! It was amazingly good food and we will definitely be returning......The staff were very attentive and very efficient, and the surroundings clean and modern

I purchased an ouffer voucher last weekend as it appeared to be great value for money. I wanted to see if it fulfilled its promise of course so I booked on Tuesday night for the thursday. I was impressed how fast they accomdated my booking at the time slot I wanted-615pm. We were greeted immediately and shown to our table. Restaurant was clean, modern and welcoming. The service was fantastic. Very efficient waiters as well as friendly. The voucher conditions were explained and within 5 min the 7 course feast began. The 3 entrees we delivered within 5 min of each other. We started with the chicken lettuce cups. What can I say-superb!! Crispy, flavousome and has you wanting more. The rice paper rolls were next. Again, very fresh, tasty, herby and kept me wanting more. The deep fried rice squid was next. It was a large serving of squid cubes served atop of fried rice noodles and chilli. My husband enjoyed it (I'm not a fan of deep fried things in general). Next we chose our mails which included a choice if meat stir fried with a sauce of our choice. Options included basil, lemon grass, satay, sizzling, green or red curry, cashew nut sweet n sour. We choice chicken cashew nut. Not our usual option. We like lemongrasd, basil, sizzling or stay however, thought wed try something different. Serving was large, freshman piping hot and fkavoursome. Again, my husband liked it, but it didn't tickle my fancy. Next time I'd try the others. Our next choice was a chefs special. Too much choice as I liked a few options. However, we selected the Vietnamese style beef as we have had shaking veal at lidos restaurant and have enjoyed it. Again, large portion, fresh and flavour some, however the meat was a little chewy at times for me. The voucher also included a fried rice. We selected something we wouldn't usually select-combination seafood. It was nice but the seafood flavour which permeated through the entire dish was overwhelming for me. Chicken fried rice next time for sure. A salad of either tofu veg, Vietnamese chicken or Thai beef was included. We opted for the Thai beef. Other couples had received it in between the entrees ad mains. We really received ours last. No issue with this as it actually worked out better for me. At this point my husband was done. He tried the salad and commented how great it was. The first bite of the salad reminded me of Thailand. The freshness or the veg and herbs in particular mint and basil was incredible. The right balance of salty, sweet, bitter, herby, meaty and so on. It was a little salty at times but boy it has got to me one of the best salad I have had. I'm so glad I finished with it considering I was a little dissapointed with the stir fry option. It was a great night. Couldn't complain. I don't know why I didn't more more vouchers. Definitely a must try. Compliments to the chefs
In Perth for work & looking for a meal that won't make me Mr Creosote (for all the Monty python fans out there)...had the Vietnamese beef noodles very nice &loads of it (couldn't finish it!)
Wife and I ate here with a Deals.com voucher. Rang on Thurs afternoon and got a Fri evening booking without any problems. Service was polite and attentive. Food was wonderfully fresh, fragrant and plentiful. Salt and Pepper Squid, Vietnamese Chicken Salad and BBQ Pork Red Curry were all wonderful and worth mentioning. We'll eat there again.

Had dinner tonight before going to the Perth Concert Hall up the road. Service was attentive & polite ( they even opened the door for us when we left'). Not your average Viet cafe; this is more upmarket with an attractive tasteful decor. The mains were lovely & were looking forward to trying other dishes.
This is one of my favourite places to go to during lunchtime for a casual work lunch. The food is great and well presented. And cheap too!
Fantastic!. I travel to Perth for work from the east coast and this restaurant is far better than most of the options. The location might be slightly isolated, but it's worth going to. Staff are very friendly and pleasant and the flavours in the food are just spectacular. It's a little pricey compared to some of the cheaper options in Perth but it's well worth it based on flavour and serving sizes which are more than adequate. I'll eat here every time I come to Perth now!

Southern Star is a wonderful gem, the staff were friendly attentive and helpful - as vegetarians we were delighted by their flexibility in offering a vegetarian alternative to the range of meat options presented on the menu. They were very attentive and concerned about what type of vegies we were which was delightful and a wonderful birthday treat. Definitely going back.

Dined in with a group of 6 for a casual dinner when we couldn't decide where to dine for dinner. Vietnamese food! Could it be any better? Flavour, presentation, ambience, attentive staffs, the most importantly, the food oh so yummy. When it comes to Vietnamese food, pho is always what I'll order first. The pho itself, melt in the mouth! Would be the best pho in Perth I would say having tried so many viet food. The soup might be a little be salty but I guess it's all the flavor that counts. We had spicy beef salad - the flavor! Clay pot prawn, spring roll, curry duck, stir fried beef... And they are all unexpectedly finger licking good! Why unexpectedly? Cause we thought viet food is all the same! But this one, the top so far. Reasonable affordable meals just by the foreshore. Would come back for more!

Awe-some. Used a voucher and found a hidden treasure. The whole experience was excellent the way I was greeted nothing was to much trouble, I was called by my name which I made me feel special.
then the meal omg that was sensational melt in your mouth delious and the wine selection changed even almost no drink into valueing our marget river wines . you must try southern star you have nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain.
Came across this place while browsing the app and after an amazing meal with impeccable service we came away willing to spread the word. Amazing food, superb presentation and staff willing to discuss the menu and make suggestions. Try the braised duck caramelized with coconut juice or the salt and pepper prawns. It's all good and deserves to succeed.
Feast like a beast. Southern Star exceeded all my expectations and was beyond impressive. I've had a lot of asian food but this was place was one of the best and classiest ive had around Perth. I fell in love with the duck curry, didn't realize duck could be cooked so perfect. In love with this place!

The food was delicious and you could taste the freshness of the ingredients. The highlight of the experience was the Roast Duck Curry, the duck was cook to perfection and overall dish tasted phenomenal.

Very tasty. Ate at Southern Star for the first time last Sat night. Thought the food was delicious - especially liked the beef salad, the beer noodles (sorry don't know the proper name) and the battered king prawns. Friend of mine ordered the duck with lychee curry and said it's his 2nd time ordering this dish because it was so good.
Thought the fact that the Pho and other noodle soup dishes were kept at a standard price (similar to other cheaper viet restaurants) was a great move on the owners behalf.

I dined at southern star restaurant on friday night, we ordered 2 dishes. Braised duck in young cocnut juice & shaking beef. I have got to admit that both dishes were absolutely devine!!!the service was great and the food just delicious, in particular its freshness! Will definetly come back again!
Tasty food. The location is excellent, also the service is ok. Above average vietnamese food - we ordered the pork chop and broken rice, plus a fried rice dish, along with rice paper spring rolls for entree. Would recommend. A little bit more expensive than the likes of Viet Hoa etc. in Northbridge.
