Review Julio's Italian Restaurant - Perth

Enjoyed a lovely dinner experience at Julio’s. The place has a different feel to many other restaurants I’ve been to. It feels friendly, warm and inviting. Staff encountered were lovely & friendly as well as very accommodating to our meal change requests. The food were absolutely beautiful with great flavours and seasoned perfectly! We requested to add on salami to the garlic prawn pizza and it was absolutely divine! Highly recommended for an Italian dining 😊

Absolutely amazing! My husband and I went to Julio's for lunch and were served promptly. We sat inside and it was a lovely atmosphere :) The food was divine - my husband had the lunch special which was the creamy pesto gnocchi; his words were "I could eat about 5 bowls of this!". The wine was perfect too. I had the chicken, with porcini risotto and orange and fennel salad - so delicious. Highly recommend a visit to Julio's!

I ordered the grilled chicken and chickpea pure. The combination of these two flavours match perfectly. I asked for a cold salad instead of the asparagus one and the staff was very friendly with my request. The restaurant atmosphere is lovely, I'll definitely be back soon to try new dishes!

We set on an outside table which was nice as the evening temperature was still quite pleasant. We only had a main dish each as we did have a rather big lunch. The lamb dish was very delicious and the lamb was very tender. The sauce was thick and rich. We were happy with our dinner.

We travelled from Victoria to Western Australia for business and stayed at Sage hotel for the duration and loved the convenience of Julio's. Whether it be breakfast, late afternoon light meal or dinner Julio's was able to cater for this. The relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant and attentive staff - especially Gillian and Sebastian (like the crab 🦀) was what we needed after what was an extremely busy work day. While we did have an issue with one of our dinning experiences, Sebastian and Jillian went over and above to rectify the situation once they were alerted to it. If you are in town, definitely drop in - the Bruschetta (with a poached egg), Calamari Fritti and Patatine were delicious. Thanks so much for making our first trip to Perth enjoyable and keeping our bellies full.

Tried my luck with walk in on a Monday night. A small restaurant buzzing with activity. The waitress from Chile was very helpful. Food was excellent. The lamb shoulder and vegetarian egg plant angotti pasta was very good. The best was the gnocchi pasta. Creamy and extremely tasty. The ice cream for dessert came in a small box. Yummy salted caramel!

Such a great little find. We had interstate guests over and the 6 of us had a super dinner there. It was Friday night and yes it was busy but lots of staff. A guy playing a guitar near the fire place was very pleasant. Food drinks and service brilliant. We have only been living in the city for 14 months so this was a little hidden gem. Yes we will be back thanks again

Enjoyable overall. Wait staff require a little more polish. Attentative but no “love in the room “. Maitre D’ was very good. Bit aloof but we visited twice so was easier. She could possibly be thought to be brusque at 1st contact. Meat balls were great -sauce very on point. Possibly even too dense - could do with some breadcrumb or similar bulking to lighten the mix. Gorgonzola gnocchi was under whelming. Small gnocchi - make the larger and add more blue - not enough flavour. Prawns were sweet and tasty though. Lamb shoulder was great, although additional flavour burst needed for it to star. Affogato definitely needs two scoops of icecream at $9.00 each. Not VFM. All in all very good and pleaseant experience. LOVE the space and what they have done with the heritage building. Excellent.

We had our wedding reception at Julio’s and it was the most perfect wedding venue. From the delicious food, stunning venue, excellent drinks choice and wonderful and professional staff we honestly could not fault a single thing. Right from the start we felt so comfortable with the events organiser and we were so happy with how everything came together on the night. Many of our guests have since complimented the venue on the food, service and atmosphere. Thank you Sandie, Azmi, Burta and all the wonderful staff at Julio’s & Sage Hotel.

We absolutely loved our meals of tortellini and gnocchi made with beautifully fresh ingredients. So much so we went back again, this time to enjoy duck ragu tagliatelle and WA lamb shoulder - both of which were just as good as the previous meal. Service was spot on and wine complimented the meal perfectly.

I had lunch yesterday with my partner and we loe it! Simple italian way for a quick lunch. Focaccia, salumi board for 1 and eggplant involtino. We share a Trenette pasta with lamb ragu and a cassata for dessert. A glass of Pinot noir from Yarra Valley and a good coffe. Everything was tasty and well presented. Compliment to the Chef! We will be back!

We managed to get a table at the last minute for dinner at Julio's and we quickly and attentively treated. I could have ordered almost everything on the menu - it all sounded so good. Decided on the Arancini Ball and Crepes and my husband had the gnocchi. Both our meals were amazing and the wine was great too. We finished off with a delectable dessert each were just gorgeous. Staff and service were great and food just brilliant. Can't wait till I find a reason to come back again.

We just had a work lunch and were very disappointed in the whole experience. There were bread plates and oils on the table but we were not offered any bread. The food was not cooked and we received no further offer’s to order drinks after our first round. We asked for a bottle of water for the table ($9) our mistake. It was barely enough for all parties and were not offered any further water after that. After advising staff that the pork was undercooked we were still charged full price. There were only 4 tables of customers yet the staff seemed to be very busy talking.

Loved the food, and the venue was to die for Thank you.

Fabulous food, great wine and good service, and overall pricing was quite competitive.
Tina Dawn Saunders
We had the tapes to share it was fantastic and the crepe's were to die for. Washed down with a bottle of Deep wood Chardonnay. Looking forward to going back.
Zorica Jurisic
Beautiful setting, great food, excellent service! Wish there few more main dishes to choose from, but I guess in fine dining that is not really the point. I had some amazing pork and looking forward trying something else next time

Our daughter’s wedding reception- 3 course dinner plus dance floor for approximately 45 people was professionally managed- and nothing was too much trouble! Thanks so much. Everything was brilliant and the friendly service and food quality was superb.

The food was fantastic 17 years ago when we first went there and it's still the same now. Along with the dining ambience, it's a definite hearty recommendation ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The best arancini balls !! Everything else was good too,to full to try desert, we'll be back
Janet @ Perth
Tried their squid ink pasta, it seems to be overcooked so it’s a bit soggy. Their Mac & chess ball are alright, about average.

Came here on a Friday night, and was pleased that it wasn’t too busy. Good place for a date or a quiet catch up, and real nice ambience. Service was really attentive but never annoying. For mains I had the ravioli which was lovely, and actually all our food was real tasty

Was my second visit to Julio’s. The first time was amazing I would of rated five stars for sure. But my second time was complete opposite and I left quite shocked and confused. We first entered and the waitress didn’t even greet us just stared and it was us that said ahhh hi we have a booking. we then got seated and a different waiter took our order he was lovely. The wine was great and entrees were great 9/10 no complaints so far. But after finishing my wine no one was around to take another order. Our mains came and put on our table I said excuse me but the waitress must of not heard so I gave her the benefit of the doubt. I then called her over to ask for another glass of wine with her response yes. She then went around to other tables in and out four times, 8 minutes later (yes I timed :( ). She came back asking me what glass I wanted so I cancelled the order as I was already half way through my meal. The lamb which I ordered last time was amazing but this time was so dry and tough I couldn’t even finish it and trust me I always finish my meals. We sat around after finishing not once did we get checked up on how it was going. To make thing worse when I was paying for the meal again I didn’t get asked how my meal was rather the guy behind the bar and waiter having a conversation while I was waiting to pay ??? So overall wine 9/10. Entree 9/10. Main 3/10. Service 2/10. I’m confused how There was such a change from last time I came. Anyways I was going to recommend to friends and organise a dinner there but I’m going to give this place a miss now!!
Daniel
Enjoyable meal here with the entertainment voucher. We shared the beef carpaccio for entree. I had the ravioli for my main. My friend had the beetroot risotto. Great meal with very friendly staff.

3.5 rating. <br/><br/>came in on a quiet sunday evening for dinner. service was lovely and attentive throughout the 1.5 hours we spent there. <br/><br/>for starters we had the focaccia red pesto, and the chicken and pistachio meatballs. that focaccia is probably the best i’ve ever had, and we’ve had a few in italy! it was served fresh, warm and crispy, and went perfectly with that pesto. the meatballs were so-so. a tad bit over cooked as the meat was quite tough, and the balls themselves didn’t have much flavour. <br/><br/>for mains we got the cannellone (prawns and crab mousse with seafood bisque), and the beef cheek ravioli. i enjoyed my cannellone, although i would’ve preferred a slightly thicker sauce. my partner’s ravioli was very odd texture-wise. we were expecting it to be a bit meaty, but instead it was like a pate, and tasted very weird. the sauce was nice but completely overpowered by the filling. <br/><br/>we didn’t order dessert as they were all fruity and i don’t enjoy fruit in my sweets!<br/><br/>we would come back, but just for that amazing bread!!!

Rustic setting, warm ambience. Tried a few dishes and really enjoyed:<br/>👍Scialatelli- pasta cooked al-dente and has good amount of fresh seafood in it<br/>👍Anatra - Roasted duck breast on pumpkin puree was divine! Duck was cooked perfectly with a blush of pink in the middle.<br/>👍Polpette- Chicken with pistachio meatballs were juicy and moist, and with the tomato sugo, the combination of flavours were so delicious. <br/><br/>Beer battered chips were enjoyable and a great side snack. For desserts, we had the Limone (Lemon Curd) and Bonet (Italian pudding). Both desserts were pleasant and a good finish to our meal, but nothing spectacular. <br/><br/>Service was prompt and friendly. Overall, a fantastic dining experience.

I have not been to Julio’s for a while and though the formate has changed to look more casual the prices have not changed to match. <br/>The lunch menu is nice, however if you want to stick to a light lunch you are left with ordering tapas food. Having said that the food available for a light lunch is all very good. <br/>The wait stuff are lovely and attentive
Ade.jo.abel
Always admired the building and the interior was also attractive. The casual singer on the balcony was very good. Wait staff were friendly and attentive. The Wife had risotto which was disappointing- a little undercooked and scarce of scallops. I had Barumundi. Which was ok. I think Julio’s is now more of a hotel cafe than a go to restaurant
Kei
We had a wonderful time here! Delicious food, lovely ambience and great service. We had the arrancini balls for entree, prawn gnocchi and lamb shoulder for mains and ti ra su for dessert. All were delicious!

I love an old building, it has soft lighting and peaceful music, it has a pleasant, soothing ambience. The food were delicious, the waiter was attentive. $300 for 4 people with drinks, yummo

Had a fabulous meal with some friends great atmosphere & the staff were very friendly<br/>The head chef Simone came to our table for a friendly chat which made us feel quite special<br/>We had Julio’s board to share the artisan cold meats were great they Even brought us extra ciabatta <br/>We followed with the risotto & the Gnocchi & topped off with the venison tagliatelle everything looked & tasted amazing<br/>We finished with the desert board which was a fantastic tasting of 3 desserts <br/>Next time I will order the chocolate Caprese just for me it was delicious <br/>We will certainly return next time we stay in Perth

It is the best Italian food I have had in a very long time. The gnocchi dish is amazing!!!! The staff are very welcoming and knowledgeable. There is always a great atmosphere in the restaurant.

Was here after they reopened.<br/>I am Italian so my expectation on Italian food is high and the food was amazing. Staff were very good and enjoyed myself, looking forward to returning for a second helping <br/><br/>

Great night out in a beautiful heritage building, on a romantic date night. The food was excellent providing some local twists on authentic Italian dishes.

I used to come to this place before it got renovated and after its renovation I have to say that the place is more appealing and the food has become more interesting. We tried a few dishes from the hand rolled prawn gnocchi and cocoa tagliatelle. Their pasta is still their forte here as they're unique and so tasty! They're our favourite dishes for the night! We also tried the pollo, scotch fillet and cartoccio. They're all nice but the Cartoccio is outstanding as the fish is fresh, light and has a lot of flavours. Impressed with the mains, we decided to try a number of the desserts. We had the crostata, chocolate caprese, panna cotta and pistachio mousse. The Panna cotta unfortunately has the rosemary which can be quite overpowering in taste. Our favourite has to be the crostata with the banana ice cream and the chocolate caprese! The flavour of the ingredients just blend so well and we cannot get enough of it. Overall, good experience!

We came here after an art exhibition and had a hungry table of 14. The service was average and tardy and the food was ok but not what I was expecting. Disappointing.

Was looking forward tonight after hearing reviews. So come with another couple. We ordered a cocktail to start and got questioned by the waiter about our selection it come to the table and for $18 was not a cocktail but a shot. Was not impressed with the cocky responses from the waiter. The venison with cocoa pasta was dry and flavour was just not right. The chicken was nice and my friend had the fish which she said was nice. Had to ask the waiter where are our salads he looked at us like we were aliens. Come back with them no serving tongs we had to ask him from some. We asked the waiter what 3 deserts was on the share dessert plate. We were told the first 3 from the dessert menu. We decided to go with that, when it arrived looked good but the tastes where not so inviting. Had to ask again to the waiter we need plates to eat our dessert . 1 element of the desserts was not on the plate asked the waiter for him to tell us the most stupid excuse that it is not on their because the share place is cheaper than the 3 desserts. Me and my friend just looked at each other and said that is the most stupid excuse I have heard and doesn't make sense when he told us the first 3 desserts is exactly what you get on the share plate. We left very unimpressed with the food and the service.

Julia's is set inside a hotel and the atmosphere is absolutely beautiful and romantic. Good service although unfortunately we were not permitted to take away left over pasta. The lamb was the star dish of the night. The tagliatelle with venison was dry. Deserts were delicious.

Overall a nice dinner for us ! A historic block attached to a modern hotel building. Julio's is out of our expectation on the decor and the atmosphere. The food are on par with some fine dining place. The raw oysters are really fresh. However, we wanted to know the origin of the oysters and asked the waitress. The girl forgot the second times to come back even we had followed with her. We were not giving up to ask the third time and she managed to get an answer to us, and I hope that's the right answer. We noticed there's are young waitress, maybe they are not quite experience and will need to attend in details more.

I have no idea where those bad reviews are coming from.  As an event organiser, I dine out a lot and get to compare many different venues.<br/><br/>Julio's has been beautifully refurbished, and the place has a modern,  innovative yet welcoming feel to it. <br/><br/>We promptly were greeted and the friendly service throughout the evening was attentive without ever feeling to be intrusive. A big thanks goes to our sweet waiter, Stefano, who so patiently looked after a bunch of demanding diners without ever losing the smile on his face. <br/><br/>Our group of nine ordered a variety of entrees, mains and desserts. Each and every meal was well received. The quality of food was perfect, and portion sizes were far more generous to many comparable places.<br/>There was not even one complaint about any of the dishes we had.<br/><br/>Do yourself a favour and get into Julio's. You won't be disappointed.<br/><br/>I highly recommend this venue.

I have to admit, italian restaurants don't normally attract my attention.....all the oil & carbs usually leave me feeling bloated & flatulent. However, a friend recommended Julio's, saying that it can't be bad having lasted as long as it had haha. So i figured, why not?<br/>I was greeted by a lovely young gentleman & shown to a seat near the window. I loved the decor....the weathered, distressed look of the walls, ceiling etc just sets such a cosy ambiance. <br/>I got a tempranillo by the glass & 3 natural oysters to start. I wasn't thrilled by the wine...but the oysters were fresh & tasty.<br/>As my main i got the Tortelli, with potato & italian sausage, thyme, black truffle sauce & hazelnuts. This dish did not fail to impress. I absolutely loved it.....the wine was a terrible match to this though & by this stage i was laughing & thinking of ordering a light white....but i just drank my water, as the food was a delight to my palate anyway. <br/>I almost never eat dessert (especially at italian restaurants, im usually ill by then lol), just a shared cheese board or affogatto maybe, but when the lovely waiter told me the portion size, I figured...why not?<br/>I ordered the Dolcemangiare, goat cheese, rhubarb & raspberry fluid gel, port poached rhubarb & cacao nibs.<br/>I didn't regret my decision for even a second. What a taste sensation with all the elements complimenting each other fantastically....& beautifully presented. <br/>Overall I highly recommend this place to lovers of Italian cuisine and those that are unsure......I'll be going back!!!

Had the arancini, gnocchi, sweet risotto and barramundi (baked in paper and foil). All were nice and properly cooked and the service was good. One issue with the barramundi parcel was that it came with a couple of prawns, mussels and vongole and they got overcooked in the bag. A minor matter and it was apparent that the chef had good skills. <br/><br/>A full price meal will set you back $80 to $100 per head.  We got a discount through Dimmi. Give it a try and then work out if you want to spend that sort of money here.  A matter of taste. For me it is not quite worth it for  a full meal but a main and a side to share is probably enough for a light meal and that is probably worth it for the quality of cooking.

Possibly the most original welcome we have received:<br/>"Hi there.  We're not supposed to be open.  We have a few tapas available but we cannot provide you lunch".<br/><br/>By this stage we are in the well appointed restaurant in the lobby of the Sage hotel.  Having walked past the balcony area with the tasteful music playing and chairs all set up, we certainly hadn't noticed they weren't open.  Neither did the other 2 tables of guests apparently.<br/><br/>So we sat down and chose from the 'Tapas' menu.  Which is really a share plates and bread and fries menu.  But this is an Italian restaurant and Tapas are Spanish so you say potato, and I'll say tapas...<br/><br/>Chose the seafood share plate, the charcuterie share plate, fries and arancini.  <br/><br/>Arancini were cheesy, hot, garlicy and great.  Charcuterie was substantial, but the cheeses were almost all hard to the point they were actually tough, and not flavoursome.  The fries were a side plate - this is a table of 3 adults, and the dish was a side plate size which we thought showed a lack of initiative or common sense by the waitress.<br/><br/>The seafood board was a big disappointment.  Deep fried or tempura-ed everything, but with little seafood, a lot of unexpected sweet potato, and more rocket than you'd find as a side salad.  Why do we always serve rocket with calamari and deep fried seafood?  It looks out of place and from the hot oil just wilts and looks inedible and beaten up by the time it arrives at the table.<br/><br/>Drinks wise we had a bottle of water put on our table (not poured or even opened - were never asked about mineral water) and two craft beers with a LLB.  No glassware other than the water glasses provided, and the fourth setting at our table was only removed because the platters took up too much space.  <br/><br/>By our departure another 4 tables had arrived, and we watched 3 depart from the waitress' abrupt and pointless welcome.  In the end we stood and found her again to pay - she utterly ignored us from the moment the food arrived, with no offer for further drinks.<br/><br/>I've downgraded from a 2 to 1.5 because if she had shown and interest we would have spent more.  But although I waited for her to ask "how was everything" she clearly had better things to do.<br/><br/>It's a pity they're not open then.  With a bit of finesse and some more enthusiastic customer service and presentation, this could live up to it's reputation.<br/><br/>$124 for 3 people.

Visited Julio's Italian restaurant with a group of friends (7 of us). Were pleasantly surprised to find the rustic Italian countryside ambiance inside the Heritage hotel on busy Hay St - it's light and inviting, fairly busy on a Thursday night but not overwhelmingly so. Great choices of starters, main dishes and desserts, and a good range of wines. We started with the selection board of delicious salami, cheeses and ciabatta and arancini. For main I chose the wild boar papardelle - homemade thick pasta with the rich meat and wine sauce, a classic Italian dish that I had last tried at a sagra in Tuscany, and it was as good! My friends had hand rolled potato gnocchi, slow cooked duck, sirloin steak and cartoccio which is a fish oven baked in foil, all said to be really tasty. All in all, a great Italian restaurant offering a lovely menu, great service and atmosphere.
Queen Of Bad Timing
When Julio’s and the new Sage Hotel opened in July, I was really disappointed to miss out on the opening celebrations. So when a Yelp Elite breakfast was scheduled in there, I was excited to make up for the lost opportunity.

Julios newly open renovated restaurant with the new boutique hotel attached to it is definitely a great improvement. We came here for a large company lunch few years ago twice and now dinner.<br/><br/>I am really impress with the quality of the fresh food and new menu. You guys must try the boar papadella and steak cook medium<br/> rare. Everything else was really good.
The Chefs Wife
Julio’s, a favourite haunt for West Perth workers for over thirty years, has been transformed into a swanky but approachable Italian diner. The iconic residence of Perth menswear moguls, the Walsh family, has been retained as part of a multi-million dollar hotel development. The rear of the historical house has been knocked through and now blends with the modern foyer of the Sage Hotel.

Julio's has the potential to get it so right. Corner location, plenty of indoor rustic ambiance plus outdoor Hay Street view dining. The menu looks delightful albeit limited, wine selection extensive and well adjusted pricing for the area, even the food was presentable. What could go so wrong? The cooking. The beer battered chips were far too salty, as was the arancini balls. The truffle duck terrine on the other hand, was too sweet. In terms of the mains, the braised duck risotto was by far the favourite, and about the only dish that impressed. Handmade squid ink pasta looked decent, but the pasta was a bit too overcooked, and the seafood that came with it was heavily diced and bland. The most disappointing factor was actually the service. We booked for a table of 9 for 6pm. When we arrived, we were assured we had the best table in the restaurant, near the fireplace except the table was short a chair. Staff were abundant but simultaneously redundant. There were no offers to top up water, or explanation for the long delay between entree and mains, despite the fact that there were only 3 other tables at the time. Staff would have out numbered patrons if our table was absent. They do say, never judge a book by it's cover, sad, but true in this particular instance.
Inexology
With so many mains to choose from, I settled for the Wild Boar Pappardelle especially because I imagined it to be quite hearty and I love the broad size of the pappardelle. The house-made and hand cut pasta didn't disappoint at all, and it always makes me happy knowing how something so simple could taste so special.<br/>Lisa from Feather Horse shared her squid ink pasta with me! I was so happy that I could try that dish because it was very difficult to find squid ink pasta that was filled with so much flavour. Julio's rendition of the dish was very refreshing and light, two spoons just wasn’t enough to satisfy my palate

Just loved this old buildings ambiance & the fact you can sit outside & enjoy an al fresco lunch. I could not let the chance slip by to try out their Alpino calazione. Was just delicious especially with roasted potato & pumpkin filling.

Wow, the all new Julio's is a really nice cafe. The food was delicious and servings were about right for the very reasonable prices. Good wine menu, although limited. This place just went to the top of my quiet lunch list... Will definitely do a date night here too.
