Review Chapas - Perth

Carla Mele
Food is delicious and they have a great range of gluten free options. Staff happily check ingredients to make sure I didn't get sick, really appreciate it.

This place is amazing! I had the ruban pineapple bao with lotus chips and a salad of green apples, fennal and walnuts. It exceeded expectations and their hot chocolate was possibly the best I've ever tasted. I would recommend their brunch to everyone.
A Doctor's Orders
Delicious food and great service! Adding this to my list of favourite Asian fusion restaurants in Perth!

Extremely friendly service and great cocktails. Food was good but nothing to call home about. The standout dish was the fried eggplant, though. Really tasty. Really need to update their chairs and general sitting arrangement. Extremely uncomfortable. Overall a very nice place and will probably go back in the future.

Most of the dishes were really good in terms of taste. The serving sizes were all over the place and the pork ribs were terrible; Give them a miss as they are not worth the 30 bucks. Service was excellent, drinks were excellent and the bao and popcorn chicken were great dishes. Room for improvement but overall above average.

DELECTABLE FOOD. OUTSTANDING SERVICE. Not only was every member of their staff kind and attentive, their cuisine was beyond amazing. My bf and I decided to splurge and go with their set “Feed Me” menu and the amount of food they brought us was staggering - we were both full before the main course even arrived. Plus their signature cocktails were both tasty AND packed a punch - a rarity for Perth restaurants. All in all: fab atmosphere, great value for the quality and quantity of food, and sterling service. A MUST TRY. 👌🤩🙌

Great menu, superb service, absolutely delicious food. Food selection of beers and spirits for cocktails. Great for date night or group outings. Popcorn chicken and BBQ pork were fantastic. For vegetarians, try the fried tofu and the mushroom dumplings. Excellent and suprising selection of desserts too. Give it a go.

Absolutely awesome place. We only choose to dine here due to the fact that a lot of the meals are GF giving my child a large selection to eat instead of one option like most restaurants. The food brilliant out of the six or seven dishes we had there wasn't a bad one. Cocktails are great and so are the mocktails. Definitely heading back here again.

I appreciated the range of vegetarian options. Usually there is just one dish that I might like, but I enjoyed several different dishes here.

Great vibe, warm ambience and very lovely service. Love the creative names they have for their drinks!
A few dishes missed the mark for us, but there were some great dishes too. Love the Sang Choy Bao, Crispy Squid, Mushroom Dumplings, and Beef Ribs which meat was very tender and fell off the bone easily.
Other dishes that were ok, but pretty average were the Duck Pancakes (a little dry), Fresh Local Mussels (nice flavours but a little too heavy on the salt) and Olive Fried Rice.
👍 Deconstructed Bubble Tea- first time having such a dessert, and it was fun and yum! Definitely worth a try :)
All Food Without Walnuts
Wow! As a gluten challenged individual, dumplings are such a treat, and is why I’ve come to this place at least a dozen times since it opened, gorging on the whole menu. I have always had good food and service here but last night, I feel this business have upped their game in both menu and service. Each plate was figuratively and literally licked clean. I highly recommend bang bang chicken if you’ve got high chilli tolerance, the mushroom and lamb dumplings were so good even our non gluten challenged pals enjoyed! Crispy squid cooked to perfection, probably my least fav was the BBQ pork, but pork isn’t usually my jam...and then the fried rice and Chinese veg to round out the table. The night was finished off with 3 deserts to share amongst 5 of us. Dish of the night was def the bubble tea dessert, worthy of a instagram video as the chocolate ball is melted to reveal more sweet, sweet goodness - and thank you to our AMAZINGLY AMAZING waitress, (yes I know that is bad English), who not only was a super breath of fresh air when it comes to service standards in Perth, but described this dish to absolute perfection and encouraged us to try! This is a must must do place if you’re in the vicinity and feel like modern Asian food with a funky vibe!

Went here last night with my friend who is gluten intolerant. We both had a lovely feed, standout dish for us being the eggplant dish. I also loved the chilli mix served with the tofu. Plenty of gf dishes, and we finished with a very dreamy mango dessert. We have to go back again to try out some of the other food on the menu! Nice ambience and friendly staff, a great all round experience, thank you.

Yum yum yum! What a treat to have Such dishes without having to worry about it being gf or not. I have coeliacs and my non Gf friend loved every dish as much as I did. Everything was so tasty. I cannot wait to eat here again and try all the good stuff we couldn’t fit in this time. Deconstructed bubble tea dessert is a must try. Definitely a share dish though. YUM!

Tried the Xiao long bao and fried dumplings here. The Xiao long bao was just a little thick for my liking but was otherwise spot on. Would have liked for it to have been served with the classic ginger slices. The dumplings were nice but a bit lacking in flavour. Texture was good. I wasn't fond of the gritty sauce it was served with.

Overall this is a decent Chinese meal but dumpling-wise I've had better in Northbridge. I liked that everything was freshly made although this did mean that food took some time to arrive.
Eunice
Not too sure about this place. The staff and the service are top notch, very attentive, friendly, and they explained to you about what they are serving e.g. the different dumplings on the seafood dumpling platter. But otherwise, seafood dumpling skin was too thick, scallop has fishy smell. Duck confit leg was too dry, and baos were average. The char siu pork was pretty succulent, which tops the dinner amongst other dishes.
Nat
Shame about the food. Decor and service was good.
Squid was chewy, brisket balls tasted like flour and the pork and prawn dumplings were so bad we didn't eat them. Dry, over cooked, tasteless and the sauce they came with was horrible. After those 3 meals we decided not to order anymore food and left.
Casey
Visited for dinner and ordered: squid, seafood steamed dumplings and bao of the week. The squid lacked a lot of flavour and just had crumbing on the outside. The steamed seafood dumpling was a variety. The lobster and scallop were both tasty.

Finally got here!! I need a GF diet for medical reasons & have heard all about Chapas being a mostly GF menu with plans to try & become 100% GF.....thus I have been dying to visit for a VERY long time 😀. WOW 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Just had the best lunch with my non-GF husband. We both LOVED the dumplings - we ordered all 7 GF types 😂😂 plus the GF squid tentacles & the GF prawn toast yuzu aioli. Think we also got the pumpkin croquettes with blackbean aioli. DIVINE!! Service was fabulous. Staff fabulous even when I double & triple checked the soy sauce was GF. Drinks - we opted for a cocktail each...hubby had the Chapas Espresso & I had The Drunken Monk...YUM!! We cannot recommend this place highly enough for anyone requiring a gluten free diet as a coeliac or other medical reason GF diet! People not requiring a GF diet.....my husband LOVED IT.

We both agreed Chapas will become one of our new 'go to' places 💗💗 Thank you Chapas!!!
PerthfectBreakfast
I rate the food a 2.5 but will kick the overall score up to a 3 because the service was lovely. We ordered popcorn chicken, crispy beef cheek with salted egg yolk, oyster pancake with mozzarella cheese, wok fried mixed mushrooms with bok choy and steamed rice.

The popcorn chicken was marinated in a fermented bean curd and stated on the menu and was a little "funky" to put it nicely. Chicken was also kinda dry. Crispy beef cheek were like little crumbed beef nuggets served with a salted yolk sauce, oyster pancake with mozzarella cheese was tasty but a little soggy. The mushrooms were terrible. $22 for "porcini, chanterelle, shiitake, enoki, king oyster, bok choy." There was more bok choy than anything else and the mushrooms were flavourless as the veggies sat in a watery broth. Also there were definitely no enoki mushrooms or king oyster mushrooms. Shiitake was the only prominent mushroom along with wood ear mushrooms and a bunch on finely diced mushrooms you couldn't make out.

Service was really friendly and attentive though.
Melissa Lague-Epple
Been wanting to come and check this place out for a while. Booked a table for Fathers Day breakfast. The service was super friendly and outstanding! Such and awesome atmosphere! The food and coffee were both delicious! Will definitely be back to sample the dinner menu. Thank you! ❤️
Affili.atewithfood
We did the $50 FEED ME dinner. The food kept coming and it was all very yummy. Decor was a let down and drinks ordered were muddled up a handful of times. 6 dishes in we started to joke it all just tasted the same... Sweet soy. However, overall a good dining experience worth the 50 :)

Great coffee and delicious food. Friendly staff that were very attentative . Very ambient atmosphere. Very nice fit out. Will certainly be returning.

Wow. Not much wrong and lots right with this place. I am so tempted to give it 4.5 but then where to we go from there? Friendly happy and knowledgeable service. Good value food. A small but interesting wine list albeit a bit overpriced like the beer. But the star here is the individual dish flavours and food combos. Chapas proves that Asian tapas DOES work. Our group of 6 tried the $50 prix fixe and enjoyed the variety on offer. Standouts were the crispy duck and lamb and fennel with chilli dumplings. Other cited the pork belly. And the beef. There was something for everyone. I'd have liked a few more veggies thrown in with the same degree of imagination. And for me the deep fried egg plant (I think that's what it was?) was a "ug" but then others in my group liked it. Egg plant can be a bit personal like that.

Highly recommended if you want to try something a bit different and are totally ok with the sharing thing.

Everything in this place is perfect ! Food, atmosphere and service was outstanding . My favourite was the in-house made coriander and prawn dumpling and I finished off the scrumptous milk tea panda cotta . Love love love , a refreshing and inventive menu that always impresses me everytime I eat here ❤️
Hewitt.mollie
A surprising and great little place. Dumplings made in house and are top quality. They have just redone the decor and it looks awesome. They are now serving local beers on tap, delicious. Love the service, food, and experience. Worth checking out!

Love the boa buns here! Also love the Asian fusion ambiance and vibe! This was my fourth visit and was quite disappointed in there new menu. Didn't have any of my old favourites on there!
Ordered the pork dumplings, but was overpowered with more fishy taste.
Vegetarian spring rolls were okay, crispy chicken sauce had too much ginger.
Drinks menu also needs some jazzing up.
Kirstiva
Firstly the Bao Buns were amazing and moreish I would go back for them alone, however after that it went down hill we ordered several plates and instead of scattering them they came out at once which mean not only did we feel rushed but the food was getting cold quickly. Squid tentacles would have tasted amazing if hey were hot and crispy but Instead they were cold and chewy, beef rib didn't fall off the bone and the duck pancakes were flavourless. Disappointing as we love Asian fusion and tapas but this place didn't hit the mark.
Emma Camden
Loved our first experience here. Great atmosphere: tasteful, modern oriental decor and friendly, charismatic staff greeted us as we walked in. The food didn't disappoint either: clean but tasty flavours with not a hint of MSG or anything nasty. We were even reassured that our pink dumplings had been coloured only with beetroot juice!
Daniel
Called them up to make a reservation at 6pm on a Saturday night for 7pm after being told most other places were booked.
I am really surprised that it wasn't overflowing with people. The service was great, all the staff were really friendly, they weren't hovering over us but did check back on us during our meal to make sure everything was good, if we did need anything there was anyways someone not too far away we could call.
The food was well cooked and tasty, we ordered bao buns, fried squid, dumplings, rice and bbq pork, more than enough for three of us. The food came out quite quickly.
Total price for the three of us including alcoholic drinks each was $92, way under what I expected to pay for what we recieved. Overall the dinner at Chapas was excellent, I will definitely be back soon!
Gina Chatel
Great ambiance and great food! Had some baos, dumplings, bbq chicken, and friend tentacles, all delicious. Also decently priced! Will definitely go back.
Maddi1048
Amazing inventive Chinese food- most of all over 80% of their menu is gluten free. They have extensive knowledge about coeliac disease and avoiding gluten & can make their whole menu gluten free if you ask. Staff are amazing and friendly- my boyfriend and I can fill up on their amazing dumplings and dishes for give or take $50. My favourite gluten free restaurant- we go here weekly!
Renato
We had a large group for a 7-course feast and it was glorious. Everything was delicious and the service was attentive and friendly. Awesome.
Grace
Love it. Fantastic staff/management, great place for the kids and food is beautiful. Only thing is some dishes are soooo spicy hot without warning, we couldnt eat some. So just ask for mild :)
EmBa
Boxes, boxes ticked everywhere! Service, ambience, FOOD. The chef's choice menu, aptly titled "Feed Me", was absolutely amazing. I'm not a dumpling or a dim sum person, so I was expecting my socks to remain firmly on my feet, but Chapas had other ideas. Do yourself a favour and grab some friends, head to Chapas, and get rekt on chinese tapas!

Upon recommendation from a couple of members of my Coeliac Facebook group I attended Dim Sum at the newly opened Chapas in Mount Lawley (Perth) this morning. 70% of the breakfast menu and 90% of the dinner menu is gluten free. Everything is made from scratch and is delicious! The cost is comparable to premade Dim Sum places and the staff are so accommodating and lovely. Highly recommended!
Riza H
Firstly the staff here are very friendly and accommodating (even though it was very busy).
Tried a variety of dishes, was pretty good and the gluten free option was a bonus.
Highlight was the squid tentacles and jasmine tea.
Good location and the decor was incredible.
Laura Graham
The service was phenomenal, seated instantly to friendly staff who moved tables and changed the temperature to accomodate us. I think we ate our body weight it food - everything was spectacular. We had the San Choy Bao, a delicious and light dish made instantly better by the hoi sin sauce; Pork Dumplings; Baby Back Ribs, which fell off the bone and melted in our mouth (even though there was only two of us, I wish we had ordered two!) and for desert the Baogers, strawberry ice cream and balsamic dressing. The night was perfect, I would defiantly come back!
The Ponder Room
Chapas Restaurant, tucked away in Mount Lawley is listed as a ‘casual dining’ restaurant. While that may be the case the thought put into the interior design has clearly been anything but casual. From the moment you find the front door you know you’re in for something different.
Nathan
Staff are all very happy helpful and polite. our food was ordered and within a couple minutes it was on our table, the food was all very tasty and good quality, look forward to visiting again

Chapas is great! Heaps of gluten free options, fast and genuinely friendly service and really yummy food. Great prices for what you get as well. I would recommend a visit for sure and will be back :)

The staff were very welcoming and accomodating on a quiet Sunday night. We ordered the fried rice and dim sum box to share. The BBQ pork buns in the dim sum box were actually the best I've ever eaten, the pork was so flavoursome and juicy, and the bun was so soft. The dumplings were interesting but equally tasty. The fried rice was very good, not too oily and had the perfect combination of flavour!!

Brekkie was AMAZING! Highly recommend the waffle with sweet and sour pork ribs !
SinCity
Walked in for dinner last night and was happily seated with great service. The food was so fresh and came quickly. We ordered the salt and pepper squid which was a little light on the seasoning (there was a sauce however), the steamed dumpling share dish, an additional BBQ pork buns and duck pancakes! Will definitely be returning for more cocktail specials from the cheerful bartender.

Tried this restaurant once. It has a pleasant atmosphere, the service is lovely, we were seated right away with no booking and the food was a delight. As an entree we shared the dim sum platter which was as it should be. fresh and tasty. We also shared a couple of roast pork Bao. I wish I could remember the extra ingredients, because they worked so well together and left me wanting more. The mains we shared a rice dish with a crispy chicken. This night they had just changed their menu for winter so were eager to please, unfortunately I didn't enjoy all the flavours of the chicken :( for myself too much ginger, that's just my preference. Everything else was perfect.

Seated straight away without a booking. Staff were very friendly and food was cheap. But food was very greasy. Didnt expect a burger bun to be so oily. Heaps of oil squirted out of the wonton when bitten into. Crispy chicken main was tasty but we chose to leave dessert as the options sounded oily too.

Thanks so much for a fantastic lunch experience. Always a gamble trying new places with the kids in tow, but this totally paid off. We came because of the gluten free options for our coeliac daughter but will definitely be back because of the great food, amazing service, and friendly welcoming atmosphere. Loved that you even entertained my kids and took them on a kitchen tour.

Gluten free DIM SUM you say??!?! I visited Chapas kitchen & bar in Mount Lawley today and I got to enjoy crispy salt and pepper squid, dumplings (YES DUMPLINGS I SAID) and so much more - all totally Coeliac friendly. Suffice to say I was more than a bit excited. The mushroom dumplings are a must as is the prawn toast. The squid tentacles are lightly crispy on the outside and you wont be able to stop until you have polished off the lot.
The service is super friendly and they were so enthusiastic to be helping people like me eat Chinese food once again.
I'm looking forward to heading back for their GF duck pancakes and apparently there are GF pineapple buns in the making.....
Belinda Gosden
I loved this place. The service was amazing and the decor is fabulous. We ordered dim sum and then an assortment of mains. The tofu was incredible and couldn't fault anything. Will def go back. Be great if open for lunch.
Nic
Beautiful food. Don't go to dim sum anywhere else. You won't be disappointed. A good variety of dumplings and buns. Glad to hear that these guys only use local produce and don't use any chemicals in their foods. The owner has assured me that free range chicken is also used. Fantastic service. Will definitely be back soon.

Hipster style modern Asian concept,
Food was simple but tasty, friendly staff
Well priced, would return..
Tip : bring a jacket, not a winter snug.
Food_Glorious_Food
Great little addition to the Mt Lawley dining strip. Think "up market dim sum" - highlights were the wasabi king prawns and the beef brisket San choy bau - yum! Our waitress was lovely and attentive and the atmosphere/decor is funky and modern. Worth checking out if you're a fan of Asian tapas.
Mike Carter
Great place to have a good feed! The dumplings were sensational and the special rice was so tasty! Management were so helpful explaining some of the dishes as well as their wines! Would highly recommend this place and will be back, Cheers Chapas!!!

I love what the owners have done with the decor. Rich vibrant colors. Great use of bamboo steamers as wall art.
We sat down to Bao with pork belly+ fried wagyu beef Bao +Fried prawns with wasabi mayo +fried rice and their steam dumpling platter.
I found the food heavy and oily. The fried rice was greasy and bland.. The fried prawns was covered in too much wasabi mayo. The steamed platter was pretty basic.
Service was ok.
Left a little disappointed..
InMyFaceHole
Have been super excited to try this place - finally got the chance today. We went in for lunch at 12 on a Saturday and it was really quiet.
We ordered the fried wantons, pork dumplings, sticky rice and BBQ pork buns. Everything was absolutely amazing and all came out at a steady, perfectly timed pace. I also tried the Thailand Chang beer, highly recommend.
We finished off with the fried donut dessert which was ok but not what we were expecting. We found the donut too fried, it was quite chewy (perhaps that's how it's meant to be) but the salted caramel sauce was very tasty.
The customer service was flawless and the interior is really fun and funky. Definitely recommend a visit!!!!
Asharoonie
Good fun and great atmosphere! I absolutely loved the decor although their chairs were low and narrow so beware those who have a decent sized ass. You'll be wedged pretty neatly into your seat.
The food didn't blow my mind but I wasn't really there for just the food. It was more the whole tapas experience that contributed to my enjoyment as you were never exactly sure what your next dish would turn up like.
Biggest tip would be to save room for dessert.
Patrick Cain
We walked in off the street with no booking and took a seat at the bar, staff were friendly although seemed a little flustered and on of the bar staff seemed new to bar work. I think maybe we saw to much behind the scenes. The food was very good and tasty and non greasy would come again
AB
I don't normally write reviews but was really disappointed with the food at Chapas. Everything we ordered was greasy and oily. The prawn toast was tasteless and the eggplant was soggy and mushy. Very disappointed!
MtLovely
We walked in off the street without booking and was fortunately seated promptly... just after we sat though there was surge of patrons! Love it! So I really enjoyed this little place! The Chapas manager is proud, chatty and super excited about this restaurant and the staff were always available and attentive. Venue was well lit/ambient, and I liked how the bamboo steamers on the wall kept noise and reverberation to a minimum. We settled in, ordered our wine (venue licenced) and ordered well for our hungry bellies! We shared a steamed dim sum platter for three - mmm the dumplings were divine! We also ordered the pork belly bao, chapalicious fried rice and the crispy shredded chilli beef. Now I am not a fan of beef, but couldn't resist trying; it wasn't crispy, but the flavour was out of this world! Yummy! The bill at the end of the night was great for the wine we ordered and food we ate. What a gift for Mt Lawley. I liked it better than Dainty Dowager...

Loved this place. Well thought out menu with all the trending fusion food that is big in HK at the moment. Their ice cream Bao are a definitely inspired by Little Bao, Sheung Wan (HK) and their euro dumplings are inspired by Mamo also in Sheung Wan.

My favourite were the bacon and cheese fried wontons, you must get these. leave the meatballs and be sure to finish with the ice cream Bao.
Michelle Brydon
Really really enjoyed our evening at Chapas! We got a couple of dim sum platters, which was waaaay too much food and therefore very good value - probably could've shared between three. A good range of dim sum, really plump and yummy! The service was solid, we were greeted warmly and well attended to at our table.

We booked in advance a table for 2, but were still sat at a communal-style bench table. I'd have preferred an individual table for two, but it's not a deal breaker for me.

Definitely something different for the Mt Lawley area. Thanks for a great evening - we'll be back :)
Not Quite A Foodie
Stumbled upon this by chance for yum cha brunch on Sunday. The waiter was really helpful and accommodating. The food was all pretty much cooked perfectly with a great balance of flavours. We especially loved the Asian greens which the waiter recommended have with garlic and chilli rather than soy. Definitely will be returning soon.
The Round Eye
We originally stopped in for dessert and was blown away by the fried ice cream bao. We went back for a yum cha lunch and found it very good with a little twist on some dishes. Will be even better when they increase their dim sum menu to include all the usual suspects.
Hippokathy88
Been here twice for dinner, and lunch and I gotta say we cannot fault the service at all! Karen and Hugo are such lovely people and together with the team, they make you feel right at home. The food is delicious, I'm a picky dumpling eater and their dumplings manage the hit all the right spots! My favourites are the veggie, ratatouille, har gow, siu mai, xiao long bao... Well basically all of them! What a wonderful addition to Mt Lawley and I'm definitely gonna be a regular here! Good luck guys!
Food Zen
We came here for a lunch after browsing for books next door.

The service was prompt, polite and friendly.

We ordered the soup dumplings, cabbage and prom dumplings, chicken wings and glutinous rice.

The food came out quickly and was beautifully presented. The dumplings were fresh and absolutely delicious. The rice was also very tasty. The chicken wings were absolutely phenomenal.

Not enough? Everything was reasonably priced. A great place to hang out with friends for some tasty food and drinks. We'll definitely be back!
Emma Morris
Great service, lightly battered deep fried squid tentacles, great gailan and you gotta try the ratatouille dumplings. A great alternative to waiting in line on a Saturday for dim sum in Northbridge.
Hugo De Vos
Came here on a recommendation. Wow! I'm so glad I listened! Sublime food down to the delicious pickled chilli and garlic cucumber taster. Couldn't get enough!
Tried a range of dishes including the fried and steamed platter. Highlight dish was the fried eggplant. OMG! I'd go back again just for that! Definitely recommend. Looking forward to going back for more!

I loved the interesting fusion food with an amazing dessert to follow. Dumplings were hand made and very tasty. Great service and beautiful restaurant. Will definitely be back.

We saw Chapas sign go up many weeks ago and have only just managed to check it out due to being away on holidays. It was worth the wait! How refreshing! We arrived for a Sunday late afternoon lunch and were given seats at the bar as there were no tables available, however within a minute we were offered a table outside in the courtyard by the owner (great guy!) which we happily accepted. Orders were taken quickly, our food came out bit by bit but in a timely manner, which was great. The Sourdough Prawn Toast was a firm favourite, the Pork Char Siu was a close second, very flavoursome- just a little too fatty for me so can't make no1. Great menu, yummy food, fantastic and attentive staff (without being annoying like some places). Spring rolls and the fried wontons were delicious. Our bill was even given to us by a little girl known to the owner which was very cute and adds that little touch that made us walk out with a smile and very satisfied. Can't wait to come back with a group next time so we can try more of the menu. Fantastic!

I found Chapas (Modern Chinese tapas) when I was browsing through Instagram and back then the only photo they had was a couple of bowls of Chinese Dim Sum. I thought I’d follow the account to get more information later on. After some weeks passed by, Chapas planned a soft opening with an offer of 15% off the total cost so I called up my friend (Erlin) and went on a date for 3 (taking Hubby along).

It didn’t take long for our food to arrive and the first to reach the table was a serve of soft shell crab with fried mantou in Singaporean chili sauce. The soft shell crab was tasty, mantou was cooked properly so it was crisp on the outside but we just want a bit more kick with the Singaporean chili sauce.

This was followed by the Mama Mui's Dumplings which tasted quite delicious especially since we didn't expect quite a good amount of pork in it. The menu said it would be 'mostly cabbage and little / few amount of pork', so this was a good surprise for us. The rest of our orders came through in a good flow and soon we saw barely any space left on the table.
