We heard a rumour that this place has the best brekky in town... Today we learned that the rumors were true! The courtyard was a beautiful setting, the staff were lovely, the meals were enormous and delicious! They were served in little frying pans which kept our meals warm too, with great gf and alternative milk options too (great for our paleo family!) This is our new favourite place! Thank you! ❤️

I liked the courtyard. It was very refreshing on a hot day.
I loved what I ordered: sautéed field mushrooms with wholemeal bread and poached eggs. It was simple, but everything was perfect.
For my coffee, I treated myself with a slice of carrot cake which was delicious.
I really enjoyed everything about this place.

Came here on a weekend for brunch/lunch. Tables were all occupied indoors so we sat outdoors. Very pretty garden but it windy so dried leaves kept falling onto our food or into our drinks whenever the wind came. Anyway food wise this place is good in terms of both taste and portion wise! Huge servings which can easily be shared between two. The shakshuka was my favourite out of all that we tried

I absolutely loved the atmosphere at Canvas!
We went with a toddler and they were extremely accomodating and little one loved running around the gardens.
I had the waffles with bacon as a treat and they were delicious! I don't think the menu was particularly exciting however, and my fellow diners weren't too impressed with their savoury meals. I go for a savoury breakfast 99% of the time and nothing on the menu really appealed to me!
The coffee was nothing special - not great and not bad!
The service was lovely and they allow split billing which is definitely helpful.

We love canvas cafe. Everything here is good - ambience, menu , coffee & artist rooms. Had buttermilk fried chicken on brioche with jalapeño mayo and slaw for breakfast on my bday because why the hell not. Fantastic. Pictured is the full breakfast pan with eggs, bacon, wild boar sausage, mushrooms, spinach and chutney and the buttermilk fried chicken jalapeño and slaw burger. Guys.. guyss it was delish.

Came to Canvas cafe on a Friday morning for my birthday breakfast. It was quite busy so I recommend booking a table if you're in a large group. Service was prompt and friendly. I ordered the waffles with a watermelon, strawberry, and apple juice. The juice was delicious! The waffles were amazing too but next time I would order a more savoury dish. My family had the pan breakfast, eggs flamenco, and savoury waffles. I tried the two egg dishes and they were AMAZING. Will definitely order one for myself next time. The food was incredible and I'll definitely be returning soon. Jake-eats

It takes a significantly good breakfast to impress me. I'm not a breakfast person. I find most breakfast food to be bland, uninspired imitations of terrible American diner food.

Canvas impressed me.

To begin with I love that its a cafe that does table service. When I'm out to breakfast I'm normally too hungover or just too damn hungry to muster the strength to line up alongside a brigade of yummy mummies who can't seem to fathom why its so hard to order in their favourite gluten free, dairy free, rye, rock hard bread from wabba wabba 10 hours north of Uluru. The waiter was pleasant, professional and didn't question why I was eating a packet icecream at 10.30am.
I ordered the shakshuka and my boyfriend ordered the breakfast burrito. Both dishes were visually stunning from the start. His breakfast burrito looked so huge and delicious I almost begged to swap.
After trying my food I was glad that I didn't. Gorgeous, rich tomato base with fresh italian parsley on top. The bread was the perfect crusty texture for dipping and the herb and garlic butter almost made the dish all on its own.
My partner was extremely satisfied with his burrito. I couldn't get a word out of him all morning.

Next time I desperately need a breakfast that isn't terrible, I know where to go.

We chose to enjoy a brunch at the Canvas Café a couple of
Sundays ago after browsing the reviews for eateries in and around Fremantle.
The Canvas Café certainly enjoys a loyal following and good reputation.  It is located in the Fremantle Arts Centre which
is a popular destination in its own right.

It was a lovely sunny Sunday morning when we arrived and
were seated at our reserved table.  Sitting
the in beautiful spring-blooming garden courtyard surrounded by the walls of
the old stone buildings was very reminiscent of al fresco dining in Paris. The
young wait staff were very attentive and pleasant. I have been told since that
some of them are probably students training for the hospitality industry.

We placed our orders and then enjoyed well-made coffees
whilst waiting for our meals. My wife ordered Red Shakshuka with feta (a Canvas
Signature Dish) for $22. This was served in a skillet. I opted for the Forest
Mushrooms with spinach, bread, salad and chutney for $16.

We both enjoyed the dining experience and overall ambience
so much we agreed to return soon.

But then the trouble started. Within a few hours I was
suffering immense abdominal pain and nausea and this continued for a few days.
Having consumed nothing else since and nothing beforehand I have no doubt that
my mushroom meal was the culprit. Such a pity. We all know what mushrooms are
grown in, and I also know that they can go off undetected. I’ll never be eating
mushrooms at a dining establishment again.

In time we’ll go back, but I’ll try something different!

Been meaning to come here for a while and am wondering why I didn't come/run here sooner. The cafe is so cute and I love that you can sit outdoors on the lawn. It is really refreshing to sit in a cafe that is just honest and not trying to be overly hipster! The shakshuka was delicious! Got it with the lamb kofta and feta, and oh my, don't leave out the feta- best feta ever. The texture was amazing. The lamb and eggs were also delicious. Will definitely be coming back soon! Friendly service too.

Canvas Cafe! Located within the compounds of The Fremantle Art Centre, it's a great little cafe that serves up yummy food in an outdoor courtyard setting. The day we made a trip to Freo was a warm, sunny day, so it was perfect sitting outside in the cool shade. For lunch, the three of us decided to share two dishes as we knew we would be eating more later on at the Freo Markets.Â

We've visited Canvas for Sunday brunch a couple times now and have found the general quality to be excellent. The location in the Fremantle Arts Centre is lovely, nice and quiet away from the road inside the walled grounds of the Art Centre so much more relaxing than some of the South Terrace cafés. Unless weather prohibits the outside couryard area is much nicer than the café interior so would suggest an outside table.

We've had a variety of sweet and savoury options and they're all tasty including their waffles which come with lovely house made honeycomb. As a non-coffee drinker though I have to rely on Mr Doe who tells me Canvas makes a pretty decent coffee.

Voucher in the Entertainment Book is for buy one get one main meal free which is good value for money. I've been to Canvas Cafe twice. First time I tried their signature dish the red shakshuka- the spices in the sauce gave it great flavour and I enjoyed this dish. Second time I had the hash potatoes. It was quite average, tasted somewhat bland and the serving of bread with potatoes made the meal a bit too carby.

What a find. Food cooked with love and two-for-one  in the Entertainment book, however we'd still go, regardless of the voucher. The Shakshuka is to die for and hit the spot on a cold winter's day. The Lamb Sandwich was equally good and served with a monster serve of  the best chips I've had in a long time. The Turkisk roll was lightly charred and filled with huge chunks of slow cooked shoulder lamb. Prices are very good and they had the best home made individual carrot cake for a mere $5. I refuse to pay $15 to $20 for desset  anywhere. Coffee is very good too. The wine list is reasonably priced and although small is still interesting with some nice beers on offer. The service was genuinely friendly and performed by a girl who knew her stuff. It's not often you can go somewhere and feel confident that whatever you order will be good, but this nice little place is it

Probably the best breakfast I've had in a long time- the red shakshuka! I even went home and made it for myself later on in the week! Service from the waiter was helpful. I just don't like the attitude from the cashier guy. I found he was a bit rude when I asked if I could use PayPass since I saw a little note that PayPass is available. Didn't end up using PayPass as the guy said if Paypass was used, the whole system will slow down. Oh well very misleading note you have there on the counter!

Delightful from beginning to end. Fresh air, covered courtyard, friendly and efficient wait staff, delicious food, interesting menu - this place has it all and more. We visited a few months ago and it was good, but today it was perfect. we enjoyed lunch which consisted of excellent rich coffee, burger which brought a big smile from my mate, I enjoyed the roast veges and Gorgonzola and my partner had the open lamb sandwich. Good sizes, delicious taste.

We finished off sharing a chocolate beetroot cake (we are in fremantle after all). Really rich and interesting and loved the pink icing. We each had a third and it was the perfect finish to a delightful couple of hours. Thank you.

A little gem in the arts centre. Guided largely by Urbanspoon reviewers, we had a recent breakfast at Canvas and were happily impressed. Slothing in the cool quiet courtyard was an easy way to spend a leisurely breakfast. Staff were pleasant and efficient, and the coffee had plenty of body and flavour - not always a given in our Fremantle experience, so that got top marks. Breakfast items - the brekky special was flavoursome and filling; my field mushrooms were disappointing but that was more my expectations I think - I hadn't picked the mushrooms to be minced up and added to scrambled eggs, so there wasn't the dominant mushroom flavour I'd been anticipating. But that aside Canvas is a really good cafe with a great setting and plenty of interest in the adjacent arts centre shop.

Beautiful garden cafe. Polite staff. Reasonable prices and great food!. I'm always on the look out for breakfast places that do interesting food, because I can cook eggs and bacon at home! The menu is exactly that. You can also get a standard style breaky, but the rest of the options are things you'd not bother with at home like "hashed" potatoes with red onion and capsicum with 2 perfectly poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Or smoked cod with asparagus, hollandaise, poached eggs. The rustic presentation is also lovely, and the prices are very reasonable... and of course its delicious! Was left very satisfied. Will be going back!

Beautiful Location and Fab Food!. Canvas Café has absolutely beautiful surrounds – it’s lush, green and elegant. I’m there with my aunty for a brunch – with literally 5 minutes to spare till the end of the breakfast menu (11.55 am!). Our friendly waitress assures us it is fine for the kitchen to rustle up some of the interesting looking items on the menu. While we are sitting outside in the serene courtyard (complete with an outdoor heater so we don’t freeze to death) we spot some friends – they are quick to recommend the Red Shakshuka and the coffees. Instead, we share a hot chocolate, the Basque Hashed Potatoes and the Housemade Waffles.

The hot chocolate is great – creamy, liberal amounts of froth and a good amount of chocolate powder on top. It’s steamed to the right temperature and is perfect for a chilly morning in Fremantle.

The Basque Hashed Potatoes ($21) are also a nice cure for the winter cold. It comes with red onion, spinach, poached eggs, sherry hollandaise and manchego. A quick google search tells me that Hashed potatoes are creamy mashed potatoes cooked in white wine. The potatoes are cooked perfectly and well seasoned from the onions which are just caramelised. The poached eggs are almost well done, but have a touch of gooeyness on the inside. It’s the sherry hollandaise that wraps the dish together – acidic, velvety and extraordinarily generous. The presentation of the dish is quaint – the potatoes and stuff served in a black pan with a side of ciabatta (two slices), atop a wooden board. Very cool.

Our poor Housemade Waffles ($16) sit neglected as a secondary dessert - I’m worried that it will become soaked with the maple syrup it sits in while we polish off our potatoes and hot chocolate but they are perfect when we finally get to it. They are still warm and heady, complete with a baked butterscotch banana and Bannister double cream. I’m not a huge fan of the baked banana – it’s a little rubbery on the outside, but the double cream is good - fluffy and with a hint of sweetness. The waffles themselves are one of the best I’ve ever had – dark brown and crunchy, with a moist cake like interior and sitting (unsaturated) in a pool of maple syrup.

All in all, Canvas is a perfect go to place for brunch. It has a cool rustic, indie feel to it (the tables have little blue buckets to hold cutlery!). It has beautiful surrounds with the option of strolling around the Arts Centre afterwards. The service is efficient and friendly. Canvas has fantastic food which deviates from your usual breakfast suspects – even better was the fact we had an entertainment card which gave us one complimentary main course when another main course is purchased!! It is most certainly worth the trek down there.

Amazing coffee. After finishing our course, my friend and I enjoyed a lovely coffee in such a cute little place. Now I know about this hidden gem, I'll be coming back for a cup of coffee with my friends more often!

Once again, bloody amazing. Best meals that I've had since arriving in Perth/Fremantle nine months ago. A symphony on the tongue!

Something different from the old school brekkie. Checked out Canvas Cafe on a Sunday morning with my partner. We were there around 10.30am and surprisingly the cafe was already full but we managed to be seated by one of the staffs on a reserved table, which they needed it back by noon. It was more than enough for us to sit down and slowly enjoy our breakfast.

Canvas cafe has 3 section of seating areas - outdoor by the courtyard with wodden tables and umbrella, outdoor grass area and indoor in the rooms. The courtyard is the best and that was where we got our table.

My partner ordered the lamb meatballs shashuka while I had their feta & herbed scrambled eggs with guacamole and roasted tomatoes. Both were served with Moorish Bread. The Moorish bread was sooo good, it was full of spices and I was hoping they can provide more with the dishes. Both the dishes were so full of flavours, you can taste cumin, fennel, etc. and I'm loving it.

We are more than happy to go back and try their other dishes especially the sweet challa bread as well as their lunch menu, which has the lamb brains shashuka. Definitely a great place to try if you are feeling adventourous on your breakfast.

Had brekky here this morning and was truly blown away. Quality service, ingredients, large portion sizes at awesome price. The breakfast menu has such a unique mixture if ingredients and I felt full at the end but not bloated as the food wasn't too rich. I had the poached eggs with potato and my partner had the big brekky. We will be bringing all our friends back here. Mmmmmm

Spectacular!. Lunch there today with friends and a 16 month old. Helpful, friendly and informative service. Put us inside (noisy) initially with the promise to put us in the lovely courtyard as soon as possible - and true to their word, they did. Lovely menu, well explained, with a tang from the middle-east. We had dishes from both the tapas plates and the signature meal plates. Everything was brilliant - so rare to say that. Stand-outs were the Moroccan bread and the astounding "paella balls", which combined the tastes and textures of a true Spanish paella in a tight little package. Literally exploding in your mouth flavours. Loved the first selection so much we re-ordered to make sure we tasted everything - we didn't need to, we just wanted to! Excellent coffees, and desserts, AND it is licensed but allows BYO (corkage $2 pp.). The Fremantle Arts Centre Cafe has always been reliable, but in this incarnation, it is a spectacular lunch spot. I didn't mean to gush, but it really was a very good experience - and BTW, if you're not into Middle-eastern flavours, their rosemary chips were also spectacular... Yes, we'll be going back. :-)

Love Love. Firstly, it was the best coffee we have ever had in our life.

That aside. The food was absolutely delightful. I could barely pick from the menu.

We went for breakfast and I'm not sure there are words to describe the food. Earthy dinnerware added to the experience.

Good produce asked to speak for itself on the plate, how simple can it get.

Serene atmosphere with great food. Hidden away at the Fremantle Arts Centre lies this little gem that's unmistakenly a favourite for locals to catch up on a lazy sunday for either breakfast or to just have great coffee.

I had the pleasure to taste their chorizo and olive entre as a side and their chorizo scrambled egg with corn and bread (see pic)... each bite caused me to crave for it more and more - which I fully indulged into when I did. The bread was amazing that I couldve just eaten it on its own without ordering anything else... the generous portion of the whole dish definitely was a filler even for two people to share.

Top all of that off with the benevolent and friendly wait staff and their collection of desserts makes this customer a very happy and content one.

Def worth the visit and I will go again :)

Cold, rainy and windy is what we usually associate with winter weather. What food comes to mind when you think of winter? Possibly something to keep you warm and contented…am I right? Located in the heart of the Fremantle Arts Centre is Canvas Cafe. Inside Canvas lies a courtyard which looks like a secret garden. There’s also seating inside too. As the seating inside was reserved when we were there, we had to sit alfresco although the weather was rainy and windy! Luckily, there were large umbrellas on top of our heads, which protected us from getting soaked. Canvas serves breakfast until 11.30 am and after 11.30 am you have to order from the lunch Menu. We arrived just in time for lunch and had missed out on breakfast but that’s alright, the lunch menu looks as good as the breakfast menu. Is it me or is Shaksouka currently trending in cafes and brunch spots? One of Canvas’s signature dishes is the Shaksouka.

What a surprise find! At the last minute we were looking for a place to have lunch in Fremantle, and came across this interesting cafe located in the Fremantle Arts Centre. The cafe is hidden away in the corner of the large building. We sat in the shady courtyard, but there are also tables along the side of the building and inside if the weather is not great.

There's been a spicy shake-up at the Fremantle Arts Centre café . Besides a fitting new name, it's also taken on a brand new identity as a Freo's newest Middle Eastern restaurant. The menu has gone through a complete renovation. Chef Nimrod Kazoom has created a Middle Eastern menu inspired by his Israeli background. Canvas's signature breakfast is the Shakshuka - the typical breakfast eaten daily by millions in the Middle East and North Africa. Known as huevos flamencos in Spain and menemen in Turkey, Shakshuka comprises eggs poached in an 8-hour tomato sauce, served on Canvas's homemade Moorish sourdough bread, which is baked daily with herbs grown on th

The stars of the menu are the Shak-shukas. You probably know the traditional form - eggs poached in a rich tomato sauce with aromatic spices and fresh herbs, served in a small skillet. Well Canvas have taken this traditional berbers breakfast and made it their signature, offering versions that include fancy things like barrumundi, prawns and pork chipolatas...even lamb brains.

It's a little overpriced but hey its in the middle of the Art Centre? So you pay a little extra for convenience. Passed the "mocha test" and I am pretty satisfied each time I order a coffee, but if you're very particular about your coffee go easy on them. About $12 for a large coffee and cake. I recommend their chips, they were yum!

Canvas cafe is a delightful spot for coffee, brekkie, lunch or even just a little afternoon treat. They have a tent that goes up in the courtyard when the rainy weather takes hold, so don't let the wet get you down. Come to Canvas for your cuppa and a fluffy bite of warm buttery goodness served up fresh. If you are after a vegan brekkie try the amazing coconut yogurt granola bowl. And for lunch the tofu veggie stir fry will fill you up. Then, have a stroll through the galleries and support local authors at the bookstore, and peek into the gift shop to stock up on trinkets and birthday gifts made by Fremantle and WA artisans. These are some of my favourite things 💕

Lovely yard to enjoy the nice weather with all the green leaves and colorful flowers. The food was average though. The sauce of Shakshuka was nice while the bread was too dull and dry and was not nicely toasted. Could improve the latte art too, looked terrible... service was decent.

Quaint courtyard cafe with an awesome menu. Lovely tea and coffee and delicious food and cake selection. The Rueben sand which was huge and extremely filling. My favourite thing about this cafe is it's location and the beautiful flower arrangements on each of the tables.

They make a really good cup of weak black earl grey tea! And that is much more unusual than it should be. Also recommend their chocolate beetroot cake.
