Review Cheeky Sparrow - Perth

Greg Baatard
Lovely place with great staff and a nice setting. The banh mi pizza was great and they have some very delicious cocktails that were half price while we were there. Not sure if the cocktails are simply a bit less alcoholic than expected or if the half price ones were different in that regard, but it was a bit strange to only be very mildly buzzed after having 4 of them within an hour.

This is such a fantastic little hidden gem. It's so quirky and fun, and the staff are very friendly. Great selection of cocktails and the pizzas are amazing to! Its worth a trip to wolf lane to visit this place!!!
David Maddison
A funky bar in the heart of the city. Plenty of drink varieties and places to sit in and outdoors. Pizza was okay but would have preferred a nicer cheese on top of it.

Stopped in for a cheeky cocktail or two on a Saturday afternoon. Great vibe and delicious cocktails. Perfect way to start the night.

Awesome venue. Great service and drinks.

Went here for some drinks after a gig next door, had the most impeccable customer service from a bartender called chelsea. She was extremely lovely and polite and very helpful in what we were after to drink. Thank you Chelsea we appreciate your respectful and friendly service, if only everyone was like you!!

They hosted my son's engagement party very well. Reasonably priced drinks & good selection. Nice that it is a separate area to the rest as well
Jordan C
Nice little quiet place. Very different and tasty range of cocktails. Cookies and cream martini is to die for!
Ernst Prandl
Great place for a nice cocktail and you can even have a conversation without shouting. Friendly staff, great service and cool decor. Will be visiting again soon ...

Really cool small, intimate bar! Atmospheric, great location, fab staff and service and most importantly great drinks especially the cocktails!! Love it every time!

A hidden gem of a bar . The staff are friendly and helpful when there are too many options :) A great variety of cocktails

Had my Birthday celebrations at The Cheeky Sparrow last night and could not be happier with the experience. The staff were fabulous the food was amazing and the atmosphere was so nice and chilled. Thank you so much We will be back again soon.

Loved it, great Margherita's lovely sharing plate, great ambience, staff very friendly. Will be going back there with the girls. (Only downside, toilets were like a sauna)
Matt Shallcross
Great atmosphere, would definitely recommend to others.
Karen Porteus
Great place to meet for a drink. Well worth a try.

Great food, service and atmosphere. A bit expensive but 1/2 deals on Wednesdays make it worthwhile.
Paul Stephenson
Welcoming staff. Lovely atmosphere. Will be back. One of Perths hidden treasures
Aline Cunha

This eclectic little venue is hidden away in the city with excellent cocktails and friendly staff. They used to do cheap pizzas on a Thursday when you bought $20 worth of drinks, but they seem to have stopped that. To be honest, the one time I did get the cheap pizza it was pretty ordinary but I think that may have been a bad night.

I love how this place is like a hidden gem in the city. Love their pizzas (delicious) and great customer service! A good place to catch up with friends over food and drinks.
Some Like It Hot
Half price pizza on a Friday lunchtime. I got the Margherita pizza. It cost $9 and was pretty big. Tasted nice but not the best base I’ve had. Didn’t like my chipped plate. Friendly service and we got a booth. My friends were more impressed than me. Good value I suppose.

Love love love Cheeky Sparrow! We arrived just before the close of happy hour and the lovely bar tender happily let us purchase a few rounds at price and served when we were ready!
LittleGirlBigFood
Im not sold on The Cheeky Sparrow. At all. The location is so good and they could do so much more but instead have settled for sub par. Very disappointing

Best bar ever very cosy staff were amazing! Cocktails are super tasty would go back for moreeeeee.
I enjoyed watching the bartender make the cocktails she was funny and very entertaining

Been here a few times. Like the buzz. Have had chicken pizza and couple of other things. They are reasonably good. Nice small bar in a CBD lane way.
LittleAsianGirl
Definitely One of my favourite spots for wine, pizza and polenta chips. Wednesday specials are cheap pizzas! Just love the food here. Can't get enough!
Jen
Lovely little small bar destination for lunches or after work drinks. Staff are always friendly and attentive. Espresso martinis are amazing here!
Stuart Ridgway
Had a great night here. Moroccan Lamb pizza was delicious and beers and spirits really good. Service was spot on and atmosphere was just right.

Snacks and drinks galore on a Friday night

I like the fact Chandon bubbles is on the drinks list. I think it's the best tasting of the Aussie bubbles in the market as it's produced in the traditional method. The Long Island iced teas are good, apart from the fact they don't make it in full measures and charge more for less spirits!

Love the polenta chips and tomato relish that goes with it. The pizzas were average, crust was very doughy and the generous fillings unfortunately made the overall pizza soggy. I preferred the prosciutto over the butter chicken pizza.

During the day Cheeky Sparrow offers coffees and simple lunches but at night, it throws off its conservative cloak and becomes an intriguing, quirky, little Perth bar. The entrance is hidden from view down Wolf Lane, a nondescript alleyway off Murray Street. Only a few steps off a bustling main road of the CBD, the dim lighting and visible timber roof beams makes you feel as though you’ve entered another era.

Went for the half price pizzas for lunch on Friday. Great service from all staff, efficient delivery and yummy food. Would recommend, great job!

Every weekday morning I get a coffee and bagel deal for $10. The coffee is consistently great and the girls remember my order every time. The bagel is awesome with bacon egg and hollandaise toasted, can't go wrong

Cheeky Sparrow is one of my all time favourite small bars in the city, the atmosphere is generally unpretentious and relaxing. Recently, I had an early morning commitment in the city and thought I would take the opportunity to float by Cheeky Sparrow, hoping it would be a good morning cafe as it is a small bar in the evenings.
WingCommander
Nicely set out I've never been here for the bar setting, only for breakfast. And it suits what I like - no cooked or heavy food, just bagel/muffin/muesli type of food prepared simply and well. Coffee is good, albeit in smaller cups than expected (welcome to Perth). The daily muffin selection always sounds delicious, but the use of M&Ms or Maltesers means that the outer chocolate often tastes burnt. Overall though, a really funky and enjoyable place without the rush.
Everyday Weekends (Yoshika)
A couple of weeks ago I had lunch at Cheeky Sparrow with a few friends. Cheeky Sparrow is a mixture of a cafe and a bar and it is the most chilled out place to kick back and relax with a cocktail or a beer or a glass of whiskey or whatever you feel like drinking. They serve a wide variety of food that's meant to be shared, but fear not if you're not the sharing type, I did see a couple of one person meals like burgers and whatnot! The four of us decided to order pizzas as it was half price off Wednesday, which is seriously worth it if you're on a tight budget. I ended up paying around five dollars for the pizza when we split the bill. I shared a vegetarian pizza with a friend while the boys opted for a soy chicken pizza (according to them it was delicious!). The pizza we ate had roasted pumpkin, rocket, goats cheese and caramelised onions, it was huge, pretty and so delicious. My friend also had a espresso martini which I had a sip of, it was so good, I kind of wish I ordered one! It was smooth with a strong kick of coffee and chilled making it somewhat refreshing. I hoping to go back real soon, I love places like this, good food and drinks with a relaxed and fun atmosphere.
Stuffyaface
Great spot for an after work drink that isn't too noisy. Book a booth if you can. They have a nice Tempranillo by the glass and cocktails are yummy. We shared some pizza the soy chicken had a bit too much soy but the pumpkin goats cheese one was oh so good! The girl that served us was really good :-)
Roo
great decor, lovely location and good food. portions and quality are on point for what you pay for. i love their half price pizza tuesdays because their pizzas are interesting (with the combinations of toppings) and delicious. i'll knock off a star though because the cocktails weren't very good. they were too strong, literally felt like i was taking a shot with every sip. otherwise it's one of my favorite perth cbd hangout spots. it's a great place to unwind that serves consistently good food!
Chantelle Hiley
A group of nine dined here and had the half price pizza on Wednesdays. We had such great service from the waitress (Katie or Zoe I think the name was). Anyway, the pizzas tasted delicious and the service was so great. Thanks for making our evening enjoyable.

Best steak sandwich ever!. So tender, so good!
Loved the steak sandwich and funky atmosphere
I will be back!

Nice atmosphere but grumpy staff. We were situated upstairs for a private function last night, reasonably priced drinks slightly slow service but there was quite a few patrons and only 2 bar staff. The atmosphere is nice but there was one staff member that really hates his job. Kicking the kitchen door with all his might, physically pushing through people, being incredibly rude, kicked the door so hard it hit the back of my friends head which has left a nasty mark (he did apologise but maybe should have offered some ice) Definitely get that It is very small and cramped upstairs however there will always be people near the kitchen door due to this fact, but he was soooo rude that a whole group of people left very irritated. Not sure we will go back as there are other similar bars out there with less angry staff.
Kristabel13
Despite what previous reviews have stated about the staff, we found the service to be outstanding. We ordered drinks which came quickly and then a share plate. We then placed another food order and were offered fresh plates which were not necessary but showed the attention to detail shown by the staff here. There was a fabulous, Friday night atmosphere with a DJ playing downstairs. It was dark, loud and fun. We'll be back.
Aeon_nz
Great venue. All the little touches this place has builds a very unique atmosphere. Just to name a few: the piano, amazing artwork, great advertising on the chalk boards and even the wooden case built around the air con. Whoever set this place up did a great job. Also, REAL freshly squeezed juice in a cocktail. Oh you wouldn't believe how happy that made me. Hats off to the owner and management.

Will be back but you need new waitstaff. Comfy venue, great priced wine & champagne, great bartenders
great food :)

shame the waitstaff are so rude and inattentive
could get better service at nandos
TwoDF
Venue venue venue. The location is brilliant the decor is great the outside alfresco is comfy and cosy.. had pizza with a few mates was pricey but we split bill so it wasn't much a problem good selection of spirits cocktails aren't to pricey either ;)
Alexrwheeler
What disappointment. Perfect venue, lovely fitout, great food, and the barstaff are doing their absolutely best but the service in general was abyssmal! Nobody explained they wanted us to order food at the table, so the waitresses got very offended when we tried ordering at the bar, and then tried to charge us three times for one pizza, and ignored us the rest of the night. We even had three people join the table wanting food and cocktails, but no amount of shouting YOOHOO would bring them over. What a disgrace. 2/5.

Best espresso martini in Perth. Cheekys is fast becoming my 'regular.' Friendly, helpful staff and amazing cocktails. The Espresso Martini is a MUST...hands down best one Ive had in Perth
Eloise
What a fabulous looking place with so much potential. A huge shame that it was ruined by bar staff with such attitude problems that If it weren't for my friends wanting to stay for a drink, I would have left. Yes, the bartenders were certainly amazing to watch and pro's at what they were doing, being rude and dismissive was not necessary. Lift your game boys.
Bramshie
Love It!. This is one of my first choices for a quick bite to eat and a cocktail with a friend or two!
The bar staff are always friendly and helpful (Especially when deciding on a cocktail!)
Food is always fairly prompt but more importantly - delicious!
Such a quirky wee place too.
Honest Ben
Good food, but average service and bad music. I have been to Cheeky Sparrow a few times. The food is actually very good, but the venue is let down by poor service and terrible music.

Every time I have tried to get a drink at the bar, it takes a lot of effort to get the attention of the bar staff. The staff are not good at taking note of who to serve next, thus people who arrive at the bar after you get served first.

The music was too loud for the dining part of the venue, and the type of music is very unappealing (top 40 mass-produced crap). If I wanted to listen to that type of music I would sit in my car an listen to a commercial radio-station!!

Great spot. Always friendly service, awesome coffee and great food.

Haiku review. Gorgeous cocktails
Hipster spot, but not painful
Love the piano
Jordan.t10
Great food, great service. The staff were friendly and funny not to mention how tasty the food was. They were very accommodating to my food allergy too which is always a plus. It had a nice atmosphere too. I will definitely go there again :D

A little over priced but overall a lovely little find.
Country Lopez-Edser
Really modern and interesting atmosphere with great sandwiches. Perfect for a nice lunch although the tiny plate, feeling like a child with the slight mess I could not avoid. Relatively average coffee but the vibe makes up for the set backs. It is a great escape from the city.
Tescobag
Full bladder. Despite being good patrons and spending a small fortune on drinks, my friend was denied acsess to the the toilet at 3 mins to midnight on sat. no satisfactory explination given other than suggestion to move on to next bar. shame on you cheeky sparrow. never seen such inhumane treatment.
Cmoorerus
A keeper.... Agree with these reviews, but get over the service because the pizzas are worth it !
Rofl Harris
A-bar-ation. Those who can, do.

Those who can't, teach.

Those who really can't do anything at all work here.

Gets my vote for the worst run bar in Perth.
Rachael Hardie
Nice young vibe! Make really good pizzas.
Colin
Bar staff find it hard to walk 2 meters to serve. Wife and i stood at bar watching 3 bar staff talking and then were told we should move to suit them. went next door to wolf lane and had a much better reception and time .

Great Odin's Raven: A Royal Flush.. As we haven't heard enough about the "Royal Baby" this week, a royal flavour will be weaved into the fabric of this review by using a royal-family-member rating system for various elements of the experience.

Ambiance: Prince Harry
Not so much the ginger elements, more the non-conventional decor which is strangely alluring. The setting is cheekier than an episode of the biggest loser and provides a fantastic setting in which to escape the hustle and bustle and/or headlines about the royal baby.

Customer Service: Prince William.
Handsome, regal and likable. Both gentlemen who served us were good lads. A special mention goes to the barista who is known to this reviewer - he knows his way around group heads, ground beans and espresso shots of happiness like few others.

Blend: "Fergie" - Duchess of York.
The blend produced a Fergie-like flavour: thick, heavy at the bottom end and leaves an after taste in your mouth that you're unlikely to forget. It was a dark, chocolatey roast with a hint of Princess Beatrice (bitterness) that accentuated the flavour unlike any that I've tried recently.

Double Espresso Quality: The King (Elvis, of course)
Smooth. Only the most suspicious mind could find fault in what I was served.

Rating: 16.5 crown jewels out of 20. To say that the Cheeky Sparrow does not produce some of the best coffee in town would be more controversial than if the royal baby grew up with an uncanny physical resemblance to Prince Harry.

Chilled. This place has a great look and relaxed vibe. The booth seating is great for groups while there is also plenty of table and stools around also. The music creates a chilled atmosphere and its easy to sit back and get lost in conversation or the papers for an hour or two. The lights are a feature, check them out overhead when you walk in.
The coffee was reasonable but a minor drawback was they only have one size for those wanting to dine in.
I could see this place being very inviting come nighttime with its full bar.
In short: chilled, classy and welcoming
LonelyCafeCreeper
Slow service, coffees for 4 ppl all came out separately, 5min waits in b/w. half of them cold

VERY DISSAPPOINTED!!!!. I booked a table for 12 people on saturday night to have dinner and drinks at cheeky sparrow. About half an hour after our arrival we were informed by one of the waitresses that they didnt have any pizzas to serve us (the only substantial thing on the menu) not sure why they didnt tell us when were first arrived. i was extremely dissappointed with the service, they should have called and told us that before we arrived. we all left and went to the Aviary where we had a great night and the manager gave us a free bottle of champagne. WILL NOT BE GOING BACK ANY TIME SOON. And they don't even have an email address for me to email my complaint!!!!
FullStop Yum Yum
Potential. This is a great spot for a drink, I got here 4.30pm on a Friday afternoon and all the tables were already reserved... The set up Im not fond of, up stairs was busy enough to have another working bar. Two bar tenders wasnt enough for down stairs crowd,. bar looked a little unorganised and messy.
James Fisher
Cool little spot for Friday night drinks - their take on espresso martini is a quality change. Yet to eat here but will be back to try
Frankie
So much potential.... Okay, the pizza's are pretty delicious. But the service was pretty disappointing. When you spend $18 for a cocktail.. maybe it's just me, but I'm hoping it tastes great, and if it doesn't and I even work up the nerve to question it, maybe make me feel like you care that I'm not 100% pleased? Also, why was the upstairs closed on a Saturday night? We had a big booking and were put outside in the cold :( waitress didn't take all the orders at the same time so we felt neglected down our end of the table. Her excuse was she could only take a limited amount of orders for tables???? huh? weird system. Basically, our efforts to unite with our colleges out of work went astray and we all couldn't wait to move on. Fail.
Leah
YUM. It was delicious. Ordered the artichoke pizza and was so good. Shared a platter, we made our own. I do not like honey but the honeycomb was outrageous, just divine. Can't wait to go back!
Micho
Not just for drinks. great place to catch up for lunch too. I usually get the freshly squeezed juice of the day and a salad or pizza to share. Great flavours and great place to just chill. Usually find myself wanting to just stay the entire afternoon after Friday lunch.
Luke_S
Do it for the pizza!. We were hanging at Wolf Lane pretty early on a Saturday night before a gig. Pretty quiet with heaps of reserved tables. Staff were super friendly, but slow behind the bar. Music was good but needed to be louder. The pizza was incredible! Will go back just for the food.
Pie Guts
Hipster tools. People think chefs are wankers. I think hipster bar staff are bigger wankers. Zero sence of urgency and zero sence that the customer pays your wage. If your attitude reflects that serving people is a hassel then there are plenty more new bars to choose from.
Rogan Van Dyke
Cheeky.. Highly recommend
Tomcharles1002
Good for entertainment. Always have a good ranges of wines and very impressive to entertain
Counter_vulture
Get over this place. Really, why do people go here? I've been invited tonight for drinks and remember my last time there, over-priced average food, a lot of attitude from the staff. The soup was the only thing that was edible. Don't ask for gluten free - you get even LESS than you paid for.
Garagemahal
Disappointing. Went there for lunch with some friends. Had to hail someone down after 10 mins to take our order, which was then another half hour in arriving, with no apology. watched as those who had arrived after us, ordered the same menu items and had them delivered while we still waited. We ordered two salads which were pre made and a pizza.
Risoni salad was ok, but lacked punch - could do with some lemon or something to give it some personality. Cornchip pizza was stodgey and woudl be good for soaking up beer, but the toppings were too heavy and half fell off when it was picked up. Wouldn;t go back.
Matt Chapman
Ok. Not greatt, went for breakfast and it took ages to come out. The food was good but not worth the wait.
Soc
Went for dinner on a Tuesday night. Shared the $32 charcuterie board with chorizo, jamon, olives etc and a drink each. Nice atmosphere and location but overpriced. The charcuterie board was pretty good but not sensational or worth $32. Good wine list and cocktails but again a little over priced. No desserts at all on offer which was disappointing. Service good.
Terrine De Lapin
I have to agree with th West's review 2 weeks ago where the service amongst other things was a real letdown . There's a guy that serves drinks in the afternoon that's a real turn off. Totally disinterested in the customer & looks a bit bullish.
Foodie
Portions are of starter size?. I ordered a beef salad and recieved 3 slithers of poor cut beef, overcooked, stringy and it took them 30 minutes to toss it together
Samuel G
The cheeqy sparrow is one of the best venues In Perth, great service great laid back atmosphere with approachable friendly staff. The security are polite and playful. Not like any other in Perth. The pizzas are out of this world. A great place for your after work drinks or mid week meetings In the city. My rating 12/10 keep up the good work guys .
Josh
Limited range of beers which are ridiculously overpriced. Silly rules such as not being able to order cocktails upstairs. Average music which is way too loud in the downstairs section for a bar of this type. Won't be rushing back.
D FERRO
An establishment thats happy to stand back and watch their feral bouncers threaten a women is appalling.

Went there early Friday to get food and some drink, and waited patiently in line only to be threatened. They should teach their staff the proper meaning of the word etiquette, and the difference between Bouncer 'etiquette' and actual manners. we were not drunk, we were not unruly, we just had the audacity to state the obvious to their roids addled Bouncer.
Fusian Palette
2nd bar for the night - we had smoked salmon n vegetarian pizza. Very fresh and crispy base with delicious goat cheese. Delicious!
Alex Whyte
Went to the cheeky sparrow for dinner last night. Had a great time with my friends, nothing was impossible for our waitress. We will be back very soon, best service in a long time!
Roger
Awesome, great service ad people should give it a go and not be pretentious!

-----23 Aug, 2012-----

What a treat. The best service I have experienced in Perth CBD. Great atmosphere. Friendly staff serving delicious food. Will be back very very soon.
Creme De La Creme
Even though the decor is good, i just felt uncomfortable, the atmosphere was not there. I called out to the waitress four times and she did not notice me and when I approached the counter the staff continued with their conversation. My boyfriend just plainly refused to eat there because of the unsettle vibe of the place, so we left.
Matt Martin
Staff need a rocket!. Appauling staff attitude, would be great if you had a decent manager who could recruit professional staff. Big let down. Go anywhere else!!
Iconography11
Hipper than thou. Dreadful service. Just went in for a quick drink and read of the paper when I had an hour to kill today and was largely ignored by the staff. My chai was not even hot and it was that awful sickly sweet stuff made from powder or syrup. Not worth the money.
Rebecca Robinson
Deplorable service, mediocre food and weak, bitter, luke-warm coffee. Don't be fooled by the hip staff and cute name! I popped in for a late lunch and was given a menu and water pretty quickly, but then sat at my table for TWENTY MINUTES without being approached. When a waiter finally approached me, she asked with a disdainful sneer, "coffee?". Nice welcome! I ordered the zucchini fritters. On the menu, it specifies that there is chilli in the dish, which I like. However, it was not just some chilli, it was almost inedibly spicy. The fritter (one single fritter, not fritterS) was unbearably spicy on its own, and the beetroot feta salad was laced with what looked like a whole sliced red chilli, seeds and all. It seemed amateurish cooking at best. My soy latte was weak and barely warm. After I'd finished my meal, I was completely ignored. Nobody offered me more coffee, water or cakes. I eventually helped myself to another bottle of water and got filthy looks from the staff for the trouble. Thanks for nothing!
Lil Bean
Great Cheese board!!... Beautiful! Love the chilled vibe... Standard wine, over all... Great for a relaxing after work
Fiona Charlaine
The coffee's bitter, the eggs were overlooked and the feta was non-existant in the mushroom and feta brekkie!
Frankly
Hit all the right spots. My new favourite breakfast place when I visit Perth.

The atmosphere is warm and cosy but with lovely big windows for natural morning light. The décor is a good balance of funky and quirky and the staff were friendly and very efficient.

I ordered the chai porridge with pear and rhubarb compote, a little nervously as porridge in cafes tends to be over-sweetened and often made from quick oats. You can imagine then that I was totally impressed with the generous serve of beautifully spiced, perfectly textured whole oats that came over to my table, unsweetened to let the delicate compote do its work and a little dish of honey for extra kick when needed. All hail the kitchen that pays proper respect to the humble porridge! A couple of good coffees and that’s pretty much all a fussy girl can ask for out of a breakfast encounter.
Mameshiba
Hmmm what a conundrum. Nice food, always go with the toasted rolls and good, consistent coffee. Am a bit over the whole hipster staff though, and that little framed list of whats acceptable in a small bar is just lame, seriously, get over yourselves. Such a shame too, it has a lot of potential. Bring back Alda's! Lol.
Anna Keunen
Quirky little bar with great boutique beer.
Courtney Dorsett
Not impressed. Went for dinner and drinks on a Saturday night. Waited for a while to get a table and then when we finally did, waited ages for the waitress to offer us a menu. Food was nice, just had some tapas but the service left a lot to be desired. They were rude and slammed the bill down on the table before we had even finished. They then proceed to take my friends wine glasses also before they were done. So unfortunately because of this they lost some more business from us, we would have stayed longer but not with the bad attitude. So we went next door and enjoyed their friendly service.

Will not be returning.

Unimpressed by Arrogance. My first experience at Cheeky Sparrow was met with nothing but disappointment and arrogance beyond belief from staff who are clearly not working there to serve people!! They were much more interested in standing around chatting amongst themselves.
A group of us met up for a late lunch and drinks on a Saturday afternoon. We enquired about the soup of the day and was told it was one thing, only to have the waiter bring out something completely different and just assuming that this would be ok?!?! He didn't come back out to advise us that it was different from what he had told us originally, which is what you would expect to happen.
Then after one of us couldn't decide on which pizza to have, the waiter said he would give us a few minutes and come back to take our order. 20 minutes later and still no sign of a waiter, we managed to get someone's attention. My friend said she'd been waiting for someone to take her order....he seemed to care little. She said she wanted a pizza and asked what was nice. His response was "oh! so you just want something nice" and walked away! 10 minutes later, a different waiter came out with a random pizza. He seemed puzzled when he was advised that she hadn't been given the choice of ordering what she wanted and that she didn't want the pizza he had brought out. We finished our drinks, paid for the overpriced food we had eaten and got out of there!
Lolly Lettuce
Just right. Friday May 4 - Breakfast

Vegetarian breakfast is DELICIOUS!
Watermelon and strawberry juice - freshly done is perfect
Didn't expect table service... :) and they were great
they say yes to everything... :) :) :)
Definitely go try it.

Note: not a large menu for breaky though... but sufficient. :)
Lauren Jane
Great pizza, great atmosphere and great arancini! Can't wait to go again soon!!!
Frankie Nibbles
Glorious. My boyfriend and I came here for breakfast, staff were attentive and pleasant and the atmosphere was very relaxed. We ordered the Eggs Benny and the Muesli. Dishes were presented nicely and were absolutely delicious, so well priced!! Fantastic coffee too, definately coming back!
Blue Cheese
Well popped in here for a light lunch and I was very impressed. Lucky for me my friend also likes the whole potato on pizza thing (carb on carb) so we enjoyed this and a melon, grape and feta salad. The salad was fresh with balanced flavours. The service was also quick and polite - well done cheeky sparrow keep it up
Chrissy
Amazing. I just found this place, right across the street from where I live. Its really good service and the ambiance is great. Food is 7 out of 10.
Neen
Went here for breakfast early on a weekday so it was really quiet. The food took a little while to come, but the coffee was good, food was delicious and filling. Very cute.
Chee Lai
An unfavourable experience. Went there for lunch today with a couple of colleagues. I have had good experiences there before while having drinks and snacks, but this was the first time I had gone down for sit down meal. We were seated promptly and drink and food orders were taken. Drinks came out quickly which was great. However, this is the end of anything good to say. Food came out at 3 different intervals (5 pizzas one salad). One of the pizzas came out 30 minutes after everyone else's dish had come out. I had to chase up the staff 3 different times. In one instance the girl said she would go check out what was happening with the pizza, and never came back. Only when I asked to change my order (since everyone on my table had finished their meal), the pizza was only a minute away. I was compensated with a free meal, but the service was quite poor, and one of the waiter's had a very poor attitude. Although we didn't have a good experience with the service, the food was quite delicious.
Miss K
Get some lessons on service. My bf wanted to show me a new bar he'd found in one of the lane ways in Perth. On entrance Cheeky Sparrow looked impressive and funky. However, like everyone else on this site the let down for me would have to be the service. Having been to Five in Mt Lawley the day before where service was impeccable and I was made to feel welcome, I was expecting the same enthusiasm from the staff at CS. No such luck as they were more interested in chatting to each other than servicing patrons. Perhaps they could take lessons from Five.
Jessica Anne
A perfect watering hole...the bar staff have initiative and flair, and will create anything you like based on even the most vague requests. "gin flavoured please". Love
Spears
Comfortable drinking hole!. This place has become very popular very quickly and I can see why. Perth CBD has come a long way! We can now eat great food and kick on to cosy little bars like this one without leaving the city! I love it.

Nice venue, very bad management. Went there three times, first time was ok but one of the saff made some strange comments about a few black people sitting across the table (borderline racist) maybe he was being cheeky & we misunderstood.
we decided go somewhere else for dinner.

went there again twice but found it to be empty & after waiting in a cue?? whats the point of that?

The venue is nice, but its a boring atmosphere overall.

We love it! What an amazing little place, casual dining at its best. The most amazing part, food allergies are no problem at all. The staff are amazing and quirky. This would be our favorite place in Perth. Keep up the good work Cheeky Sparrow :0)

Patchy. Went here for drinks and it was a good night out, but didn't have a great experience when we went there for lunch.

Waitress was pretty rude, in that 'well obviously' tone you get from some people and our simple order of a pizza took over an hour to come out. Not the best if you're trying to service the inner-city workers trying to get back to the office. Staff were confused about our order so we had to leave, back to the office hungry.

Shame because I had high hopes for this place! Not recommended for lunch.

Cool place but it'll cost you.... $9 for a stubby of kiwi beer? What more can I say!

50 / 50. I've tried this place twice now & wow, the difference in each visit is poles apart. A lot like the reviews here, you either have a bad experience, or good one. Or is it more people are loving the "idea" of the Sparrow, rather than the reality?

If I had the experience on my 1st visit, let me tell you, I wouldn't have stepped back in for a second.
Both were mid week, and whilst not packed, had enough people to give it a nice ambience.
First visit, we were greeted & given menus & table service right away. The waitress even suggesting plates, as we were in two minds over what to order. The food (pizza & tasting plate) were nice, even if a little pricey. But hey - this is Perth, and they seem to think this is OK
We didn't have to get up from our table once, our waitress popping by at just the right time to offer us another drink order.

Now, the 2nd experience!
We had a group of 4, there were tables, but none together that we could sit at. The waitress kindly suggested that we could go around & ask & put them together ourselves. Ahhhh, no, that's their job. At this, I almost walked out! She did end up arranging 2 tables so we could sit together. Then we sat.... and waited.... and wondered.... Me, having been here only the wk prior, said, Yes, they do table service, let's just wait.
well, eventually I got up & helped myself to the menus. Again, I was like, yes, they will come and take our order. It got to the point where we went up to the bar to order, only to be told they DID infact do table service & we should sit back down.
Now, there were a number of staff running about the floor & behind the bar. But compared to the number of patrons, enough to cope.
Finally, we were able to place our order, with the SAME waitress I had only just a week before, after we had to wave her by our table. But WOW, what a letdown in service level. How could that be the same person, who one week was accommodating & offering suggests, to now on our food enquiry, just pointed to the menu & said yes, it's in there!!! (OH and it was the same waitress who suggested WE put various table together, rather than offering as an option)
Again, the food was good, but I would have to say over priced, and nothing I couldn't cut up & put on a tasting plate myself at home.

I really wanted to love this place, but I think I will give it a miss.
Nothing in Perth can compare its self to the years of experience Melbourne has when it comes to food & SERVICE. (yes people, you do have to have both)

Not a review. This is not a review of this place, but a review on the laneway thing. The reason behind Melbourne's packed out laneways is the price. All the etablishments I have been to are either cheap or reasonably priced. I know rents are high in Perth, but that doesn't mean it's a licence to rip people off.

Bit of a let down. I really wanted to really love this place. Hidden down a little lane way, with funky decor and very friendly waitstaff it made a very good start. I ordered the chicken with salsa verde panini but with GF bread instead of panini. It was quite dry and felt like it needed some cheese or something else gooey like avocado to bring the flavors all together, although this may have been because I chose to substitute with GF bread. The other issue was the overwhelming amount of garlic added, heading back to my conference I was scared for any poor delegate that was going to be stuck sitting next to me in my stink. This place has oodles of potential, it just needs some tweaks in the kitchen before I can recommend it.
Service 7.6/10 food 6/10 venue 8/10

We came to Cheeky Sparrow on Saturday night for my husband's birthday. A great vibe, chilled yet buzzing with background tunes being played. The share platters and pizza were delicious with a great wine list by the glass. Shame it closed at midnight, but a great spot.

The case of the missing fairy floss. $20 for a very average and very small martini? No thanks. My drink wasn't a martini anyway - the gin had sugar syrup in it. Yuck.

Also, two of our party ordered a fairy floss cocktail (I know, bad choice but each to their own) only to be told by the waitress they didn't have any fairy floss. She then said with a wink "They taste awful anyway".

That's fine. I get that things run out sometimes. But the rub came when one of the girls later asked the barman why they'd run out of fairy floss (she is fixated on this spun sugary concoction), to which he replied "We haven't". Then went into the back room and appeared magically with fairy floss in hand. Huh?

We did try a couple of pizzas - the prosciutto and the salmon - which were quite delicious, but not good enough to forgive the fairy floss deception or the 'bend over' cocktail prices.

Computer says No. Rather than feel a pleasant surprise when I entered off the lane way , I felt a strange vibe as if this were a front for the KGB. The decor is trying to be Modern Melbourne but it's been thrown together by a committee. The first coffee was excellent, the second bizarrely bad. I heard several times an apology for not having the most pop breakfast item before I got the menu. The music is perfectly horrid, but consistently so. Food looks OK.

So that was cheeky. Rude staff muttering about how our large table was forcing them to turn people away even though the rest of the place was half empty.

I'm not sure if my roast duck salad was meant to have warm duck in it or not, but it would have been tastier if it did.

It wasn't until I saw all the plates stacked up at the end of the meal that I noticed every single one of them had a chip on them (I though I'd just got lucky with mine).

My partner didn't receive her drink and got 'sorry about that' mouthed silently to her by a staff member who didn't take the order, but was ignored by the staff member who did.

And all topped off by the waiter (Do you call them waiters when they wear a Threadless t-shirt and have a celtic armband tattoo?!?) who's eye I caught as we were leaving to say thank you. Or at least I would have said thank you if he didn't divert his gaze to ignore us as we walked out.

Another over priced, under serviced bar wanting that Melbourne cool without understanding what makes those lane way bars so good.

Funky place. Came here for breakfast. Trendy decor and the food was good to! Service was a little slow.

Lunch in the city over a glass of wine. Cheeky Sparrow ticks all the boxes: varied menu ranging for $12 for a panini to $22 for a crab salad with sone interesting share platters at around $30 and a selection of pizzas. Wine menu had a nice selection of local and imported wines. Really enjoyed this place and will certainly be back to check it out for after work drinks.

A bar with everything you want. I accidentally stumbled down and found this bar...
It was a Tuesday night and it was just the right amount of people - perfect ambience, lighting, quiet enough to have a chat but groovy background music. Not only did the bar scream cool but it had impeccable service. The lady who served us knew lots about the wines and recommended foods to go with them. We had the Rose as it was an appetiser before we headed to dinner however the plates to share looked AMAZING. i can't wait to go back there and share a cheese board or a vegeterian plate for 2 and steer clear of the trash that you often see in the city. A touch of Melbourne down a laneway in Perth - Love it, and i will be back very soon.

Been here a couple of times now for drinks. the place has a great ambience, nice yet quirky. and also for lunch wer shared an olivechilli panini and crab salad. both were awesome even though cramped on super tiny tables which was annoying the good was the best.

Brilliant cocktails and finally a coffee joint that actually uses great soy. Haven't tried their food but let's face it, we come for the gin :)

Cheeky Bird. Cool place to hang out, wicked Tobys estate coffee. I love the laneway thought process. Perth needs places like this. Good easy slow fast food. Nice one.

Another hidden wonder of Perth alleyway bars, the Cheeky Sparrow is a goodlooking choice. The fitout is great (especially if you can get a booth), the staff are friendly and attentive, the food is good quality and well done, the menu including brunch (I had the vegetarian baked eggs and they were spot on), 'boards' (such as antipasto board or cheese board), and paninis, and the coffee is really good (but pricey) - and this is just during the day. No doubt it will become packed from 5pm! The best part (for me) is they cater for gluten intolerant and vegetarian!!

Situated in Wolf Lane, Cheeky Sparrow is one of a number of small bars/restaurants within a few metres of each other – Halcyon, Tiger Tiger and Wolf Lane. It operates more as a coffee shop in the mornings – opening very early to catch the workers on their way to their desks and hanging out for a coffee fix….and offering sandwiches and light meals throughout the day – salads, pizza and the like. Of course wine and beer is available too…. In the evening the food menu expands a bit to include charcuterie boards, sliders, chicken wings and the like, and the mood switches more to a small bar. The wine list is limited but includes some good drops – a lovely Xabregras Riesling from the Great Southern my highlight from the whites but the Knee Deep Chenin Blanc and Xanadu Chardonnay also appeal. Among the reds a Kalgan River Cabernet Sauvignon, and an excellent wine from the Barossa, Yelland and Papps Sete Di Vino, – a great blend of Barbera, Lagrien and Dolcetto – have the most to offer. Beers available include Cricketers Arms and Tiger on tap and Anchor Steam and Holgate IPA by the bottle. And of course a host of cocktails are there for the asking. It is decorated in a sort of down at the heel style, tatty chic perhaps? …..but welcoming for all that. We have eaten there in the past and the food is fine without hitting any particular highs but today we ducked in late morning for a drink to escape the rising temperature outside and sought out a rosé, Hahndorf Hill Winery of the Adelaide Hills, not far from where the terrible fires are currently raging…it is a crisp, dry and refreshing wine and met our needs very well. On Monday the place closes at midday so we could not hang around to eat, or even to have another rosé…..soon on we went…. Cheeky Sparrow is a pleasant spot off the noise and bustle of Hay and Murray Streets, perfect for a coffee, light lunch or a drink or two….and in the evenings it really comes into its own…well worth

The blend produced a Fergie-like flavour: thick, heavy at the bottom end and leaves an after taste in your mouth that you're unlikely to forget. It was a dark, chocolatey roast with a hint

'Half Price Pizza on Wednesday' promotion at Cheeky Sparrow was just to die for ^_^ Great food, great service and great company - what more would you ask for?
Queen Of Bad Timing
Since we're cozied up on the couch with fresh squeezed orange juices already, we decide to stick around and try our luck at a new breakfast place. J's gone for a dish that actually surprises me a little since it's out of his normal routine for weekends.

My dear friend Tara and I managed to enjoy an extended four course lunch covering four different locations in the city for the grand total of $164.50 for two people including drinks. Yes, that is for two people!

When you order, they just take a dish off the bar and give it to you, provided it hasn’t already gone. That did happen to a few people, so we had to settle on other choices.

Alda's (It's now called the Cheeky Sparrow). Same location, similar feel. This a small bar/ cafe hidden tucked down Wolfe lane.
