Review Roman Palace - Perth

Tamara Nichols
A friend and I came here last night. Very warm and inviting. Lovely clean dining area. Staff were friendly and attentive without being in your face. Surprised it wasn't more busy. Food was delicious!

Food was fantastic 10/10 ! Portions were great and quality of the food was amazing. I’m visiting again for sure !!!

Food was delicious and staff really nice and very helpful nice atmosphere and definitely going back for more

The Almond crusted chicken breast was absolutely delicious. I have never ordered from this restaurant before and I really didn’t expect it to be so good. Huge portion as well. I ordered it with potato mash which went beautifully with the creamy cheese sauce. The side salad I ordered was fresh and a perfect accompaniment. Very impressed!!!

We went here as a group of 6. The waitresses were very nice and the decor rather different with a large pond and water fountain in the middle of all the seating. A lot different than when it used to be the pancake place. The portion size was average and the meals looked appetizing but 3 out of the 6 weren't very impressed with the flavor. Looking at the reviews this place is hit or miss, so we must have been on an off night.

Went to the restaurant last night. The Arancini so delicious and the Chilli Mussels hit the spicy 😋. The staffs were friendly and helpful. Thank you 😊

The environment and service was good, the spaghetti bolognese looks good but tastes like Coles frozen spaghetti bolognese meal, really watery....taste not good

Good old yesteryears deco with centre fountain. Friendly staff , courteous owner plus nice food.

Excellent service, lovely ambience, wonderful dinner date with the fiancé. Loved our Chilli Mussels entre, and ordered the specials - spicy prawn penne 🙌🏻🙌🏻 so good!

Thank you to Jason and the lovely staff who treated my very large family to a most memorable and enjoyable Christmas Eve dinner. I started with the arancini which was piping hot and full of flavour. The crumb was crisp and it was a tasty start to the meal.
Let’s talk about the fish. I ordered barramundi which was oven baked and served with potato, salad and a lemon sauce which was to die for. The fish was cooked to perfection, moist and seasoned perfectly. Fresh fish cooked respectfully.
Finally I had the orange and Cointreau panda cotta served with a perfect quenelle of vanilla ice cream, orange segments and a raspberry sauce. Enjoyed to the very last mouthful.
What a pleasant surprise to find a local Italian doing quality food at a reasonable price with friendly attentive service.

Went here after reading mixed reviews on Zomato.
Ordered garlic bread and mixed veg for starters with peroni and apple juice. For mains ordered spaghetti marinara and penne Pollo. Both mains were average. Spaghetti marinara fish seemed stale and smelled bad; just 2 prawns and small mussels. Overall food lacked flavour. Ambience is clean, big and grand however smells of aircon/carpet; doesn't have the usual smell of italian restaurant /coffee. Penne Pollo chicken pieces were overcooked and dry.
Service was excellent 5/5. All wait staff smiled and served order courteously.
Food 1/5. $79 for 2 people gone waste.
Sorry won't return.

Very wonderful and accomodating I couldn't recommend these wonderful people more! To open up especially for us is very generous! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌

The environment is nice. All the foods are very nice. But, the service is too slow. We wait for another 10 minutes more after one of the waitresses said that she will grab someone for us to order. Besides, even the time for the food to be done is also long.

Came here as the reviews seemed good and our old Italian place has closed down.

Meals were large but fairly average.
Ordered penne pollo the pasta was lovely and fresh but the sauce lacked flavour. Chicken was vast and dry.
Pizza was nice but nothing amazing.

Best part was the fountains
Out for a Thursday night meal with the girls before going to the movies. We found this place on the internet as it was close to Carousel Hoyts. It had good reviews so decided to try it out. The restaurant was very relaxed and the staff very friendly. The four of us loved this place. The food was delicious. We had the arancini (italian rice balls) and the garlic prawns for an entree to share, SOOOO GOOD. I had the chilli crab Pasta for my main and this is now my go to place for chilli crab. I tried my friends gnocchi and it was really good. We are definately going here again next time we go to the movies. Thanks Roman Palace

I was a regular at this restaurant until it closed for about 3 months late last year. I recently visited and tried the crumbed pork cutlet. It was so big it filled the plate. They had flattened it out so it hardly resembled a pork cutlet. It was so try and there was no sauce with it.
They've introduced cocktails to their drinks menu which are nice but not worth the amount they are charging for them as they are served in champagne glasses costing between $12 and $15 a drink.

Ventured here on a spur of the moment decision to head out for dinner. Glad we did.
We were greeted warmly by Staff, who were very friendly and our table setting was nicely laid with fabric serviettes.

The Roman Palace has been around for a long time but sadly the decor is still letting it down. Other reviewers have mentioned a musty smell in the room, possibly from the carpet enduring a mishap with the water fountain. The fountain eyesore needs to go! Owners could maybe replace it with a pizza oven or something to match the Mediterranean decor.

Anyway, onto the food. Firstly we shared some Garlic Bread. Pretty tasty but standard fare. The two mains we ordered were absolutely delicious. Surf and Turf and Fettuccine Salmone. Both were flavourful and well cooked. The steak, possibly the best I've had in a long time was chargrilled to the desired requirement. The accompanying creamy garlic sauce was delicious and plentiful and the two small prawns atop the steak were yummy (for the price I'd expect maybe one or two more though). One small complaint....I'd like to see a nice Italian Salad and some big crunchy chips accompany the steak instead of the tiny French Fries and limp lettuce. The other dish, Fettuccine Salmone was well made and the sauce wasn't overly heavy. Portion size was bang on. The pasta was also well cooked. A side order of Italian Salad was spot on but next time I'd rather see it on my plate rather than paying extra for it.

We skipped desserts but will definitely go back for another visit.

Well done Roman Palace but please make some decor changes. So much potential.

Authentic Italian.. garlic bread was great. Pasta was all freshly made... and the sauces were nice. Definitely one of the better Italian restaurants I've been to. The only negative thing to me was the carpet in restaurant. Had a very musty smell when you first walk in... a bit like a cheap hotel. Carpet and restaurants don't go because you can never really keep them clean. Definitely go again.

Garlic bread was great! Pasta was leathery and had no taste. The seafood risotto was salty and over powering. The chocolate and hazelnut cake seemed old but was okay.

One of classic Italian restaurant in town. They have never failed to satisfy us since years ago. A family run restaurant that offers good homestyle Italian cooking to me. The staffs are very attentive and always smiling, this is definitely a good vibe.

Their Chilli Mussels which is very generous in plump fresh mussels bathing in rich house special tomato sauce with a hint of wine flavour, definitely worth a try for seafood lovers. Spaghetti Marinara that they have to offer here is one of my favourites for years. Fresh seafood cooked just perfectly in a balanced tomato and rich cream sauce, married together with perfect al dente spaghetti.

Last but not least, their Salsiccia Pizza is too good to be missed for pizza lovers who love generous amount of good quality Italian sausages and pork. Many other good food that they have to offer. So come, dine and enjoy the meal here!

I have always driven past here, never thought I would enter. So glad we did! We are Italian so are harsh critics and we liked it a lot. It was like stepping back in time or visiting a fake Caesars Palace in Las Vegas! Cute old Italian man, devoted to great service and genuine meals and even traditional Italian desserts. Had a delicious spaghetti marinara and a thin crusty pizza with genuine Italian topping, cooked perfectly. Only reason we don't give this experience a 4.5-5 is because the place smells a little funky, probably due to the age of the carpet and furniture. So cute though and will return with our family!

My boyfriend and i wanted to have Italian food on my birthday, and Roman Palace was the only one that opens on Sundays. After seeing many good reviews about the restaurant online, we decided to give it a try. My night turned out perfectly and we both fell in love with this place even though we'd only been there for the first time. The atmosphere is very warm and historical, the staffs are very friendly, they don't observe you too much to make you uncomfortable. The food was absolutely delicious, we had a starter, a seafood pasta and a pizza. They were all fresh and tasted amazing, much better than Ciao Italian. I was very happy that we came here for my birthday, definitely return.

Highly recommended!!!

Service is good and the wait staff are friendly.

The food does not taste mass produced and the flavours have a welcome home style edge.

All in all a nice place to visit.
Jeremy Thipthorp
Very well thought out menu. I enjoyed the pleasant surroundings. Also the service was excellent and the staff. The staff were helpful in packing our generous Italian servings that we couldn't finish so as we could enjoy another day.

This is easily the best italian restaurant in Perth! The food is delicious, the service is great and its such a cute little restaurant full of images of Italy. Could not recommend this place more!
Date night again and pining for a little Italian!

I've passed this place a few times and wondered if it was open. I gave them a call to see if I needed to book and was greeted by a very friendly man with an Italian accent telling me to come down and join them!

It's very clean and tidy inside and very kid friendly with some interesting decorations including a water feature inside.

All the staff are friendly.

Garlic bread was beautiful. The Gnocchi was hand made on the premises and was just lovely. The arancini was very nice also. The pizza was a little disappointing, but not terrible.

Really nice place, good food and great service.
Lola
We love this place! We have been here millions of times and we are never disappointed . Chilli mussels are great ! Gnocchi is yummy and the service is friendly and welcoming .

Fantastic!. We had a lovely evening at the Roman Palace Italian Restaurant. The food was authentic and service was very good. The lasagna was the best I’ve had in a long time. For mains I had the lamb shanks which I was also very happy with. I was full but squeezed in the tiramisu for dessert! Absolutely delicious. It’s great to have such a good restaurant in the area. We were all very happy and we’ll be back soon. Recommended.

Roman Palace Italian Cannington. Disappointed. Went for Mother's day when booking was not told fixed menu. Over priced, Service very slow and food dry and small serves. Was looking forward to a terrific pasta - this was not it. Would not go back again.

-----12 May, 2015-----

J Hayz. Disappointed. Very Very disappointed.. We went for Mothers day dinner. Very expensive $49 for 2 courses. $20 for a two course children's meal. I had the Almond chicken fillet which was tough, stringy and very chewy. it was difficult to cut with a knife. Spoke to the cook, who said it was chicken breast and that is how it was! (Obviously not a chef, My chicken breast I cook at home is much more tender and succulent.) He offered to cook us another, but as we had waited over an hour for our meals we were not interested in waiting another 10 minutes. My daughter's Spaghetti Bolognaise tasted terrible, no quality in the mince meat at all. I couldn't eat desert, but others on our table did. The cake was served without a fork and it was overpriced for what you recieved. Timarisu certainly lacked in flavour. Our dessert order was brought out wrong and appeared to be very confusing for the waitress. I would not recommend Roman Palace Italian Restaurant at all, its very overpriced for very poor quality food.

Overrrated. I tried this place because of the great reviews and obviously I had high expectations. Unfortunately it didn't deliver in my opinion. We tried the lamb shank and honestly I've had better. Risotto was plain in my taste. I was so hoping that the food lived up to the favourable reviews but I came out disappointed. Service wasn't bad but nothing spectacular to rave about either.
Arepasinqueso
Ordinary. The four of us tried this place recently and what can I say, we left feeling underwhelmed. Service was good, portion sizes were good, but sadly only one meal was above average. It was a pleasant experience, however the decor is definitely dated, therefore the appeal in that location is probably suitable.

Best pasta ever in perth!!. Best pasta ever!
mouthwatering dessert
warm and friendly service
Lesley
Disappointing. We ordered garlic prawns which came out in congealed sauce and the prawns themselves were leathery and very overcooked. My partner ordered chilli crab pasta and there was virtually no crab whatsoever apart from a smattering in the cut up crab shell. It was so overcooked it either disintegrated in the sauce or it wasn't put in the dish. My glass of wine was old and was sour to taste. After reading the reviews on here we were very underwhelmed. The one saving grace was the service. The waitresses were very friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Oh Roman Palace... if only your food was as good as your service.

Authentic Italian Food. This place is a must! The food tastes like the food I ate in Italy. So much flavour and you never leave an empty plate.
The decor is outdated but it sets the scene, a waterfall in the middle of the tables is something different.
Visit this restaurant you wont be sorry :-)

Amazing!. The service is great and the staff very friendly. Had the most amazing pumpkin soup and an incredible homemade tiramisu. The food here is delicious. Highly recommend.

Great night. Good food done great, my wife and in had the chilli mussels and marinara, both meals are fantastic. Great service also, will definitely go again.

Great night! will be going again. Wow! Simple, tasty, great value food. Went with my partner and his two friends two weeks ago. Had a buffalo mozzarella dish they had on as an entree special to share and it was sooooo good. I had a pizza prosciutto for my mains, it's one of the best pizzas i've ever had (blue cheese and prosciutto, they r favs of mine).
The boys all really liked their meals to and also had a pizza between them to share. I think it was a salsiccia pizza? Looked great and they loved it.
We didn't get to try dessert as we had to head off to the movies, next time!!!!! they sounded great.

Far from happy. Just left this place and far from happy!
Pork belly was tough, stringy and had a strange taste.
I had a pasta dish that was undercooked and was supermarket pasta.
The pizza was ok but terribly over priced.
I was told it was expensive by friends but thought it would be worth it if genuine Italian but it was shite!
Sorry not happy
The Naked Diners
Wonderful experience. Surprised that upon entering Roman Palace on a Friday night that there were very few diners. Our waitress Pat was very friendly, helpful and served our meals promptly. Dave had the Penne Pasta and Em had the Veal Scallopine. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and accompanied with a very pleasant wine which was reasonably priced. We even got to speak with Jason the Manager who was very professional but very approachable as well. We cannot speak high enough about the level of service we received. Even the dessert (creme brulee) was served promptly and to die for! We both heartily recommend this restaurant and would be happy to return.

Dinner at roman palace. I have been coming to this restaurant for about 15 years , I have been to a lot of restaurants over the years and can never top or even match the creamy garlic prawns they have , always done to perfection! Also the peach desert is to die for , thanks to the valenti family for always great service , we will keep coming back and continue to rave about this place to our friends , Nik Holden

Was my first time going to Roman Palace and was a great night out. Staff were very friendly and helpful and we both enjoyed our meals and left absolutely stuffed! Will be going back again for sure.

Wed night dinner. Six of us went for Wed night birthday meal.....all of us were happy with the dishes especially the lamb shanks and pork belly. Tiramisu was to die for. Definitely recommend this restaurant and chef is very friendly as are the rest of the staff.

Great family restaurant!!. We have been dining here for over 15 yrs now and regularly recommend Roman Palace. The staff are very friendly and make time to ensure everyone is well looked after. We have two children now (nine and four yrs old) who love going and have their favourites on the menu. Jason always makes time to chat to them too which they enjoy. The menu caters for people who just want a good steak or lamb shanks (which fall off the bone) to my favourites, pork belly, creamy garlic prawns and sticky date pudding.

Lots of parking. Friendly wait staff. Our meals came without a long wait which was nice. The wall out table was against had food spots on it and needed a good clean. The bathroom doors and walls also could have done with a thorough cleaning. My husband had the chicken and almonds which he enjoyed. I had polo penne. Chicken and penne pasta. This was average at best which was very disappointing as I was looking forward to great Italian pasta :( we had an Italian salad to share and at $9.50 it was tiny and sparse. The restaurant had a somewhat fusty smell to it. Overall I think it was a mediocre dining experience.

Great Surprise. Came for dinner for my sisters birthday and had a great meal. The venue is a little dated but nice and the staff were very attentive and helpful. The food was tasty, fresh, well proportioned and reasonably priced. We will definitely be going back

What a surprise!. Tried to book an Italian place tonight, and all the usual places were fully booked. Called Roman Palace and was given a booking straight away, which made me a little nervous - why could I get in here and nowhere else? SO GLAD we could!! What a little gem! A tidy little place that's been there for 17 years as a family-run business. Service was great, food was awesome (crab pasta!) and I will be a return customer! The menu isn't huge, but what they have, they do well. Give it a go, you'll really enjoy it.

Woowwwwww.... Best restaurent ever been. Gr8 service and even better and quality food. Chefs must be well trained and experienced. Coz entree, main and dessert all fantastic.. Love to go there again.

A good Italian restaurant. We have been visiting the Roman Palace for many years. The food is always good, the prices reasonable and the service warm and friendly. The Italian sausage on tomato is delicious.
Blah_blah114
Below average. We went for dinner here and ordered 3 mains between us. All the mains has very strong tasting sauces to the point where i only ate about a quarter of my meal. Also the bread was not fresh. If you do go here dont order the fish, lamb or veal.

My favourite restaurant in Perth! Love the spaghetii Marinara!

Stinks of Chlorine. They have a large water feature indoors which stinks of chlorine.
Food was below average.
Mark
Not for us. Was invited out to dinner with friends and none of us had been here before. Read reviews and had hesitations. We will not be going back. Over priced and food quality pretty average

We had a great night here tonight. Our children were very welcome and all our meals were fantastic,

LOVE THIS RESTAURANT !. My parents started going to the Roman Palace in 1997, I started going there in 1998, have been taking my daughter there since 2001. We love going along for dinner. I have never ever had a bad meal there. Try the Almond Chicken, Pork Belly and the Red Emperor with Champagne Sauce. What a treat. I know you will love this place as much as we do. Top quality food !!

This restaurant has a brilliant atmosphere and all staff are lovely and helpful. The food is great with decent sized serves and the price is reasonable. Thanks for a great night, we loved the fountain.
Dave
Great Italian Restaurant. Had a lovely dinner, food was great, service was attentive and friendly. Started with the gnocchi, perfection! For mains I had the lamb shanks, they were tender and delicious. Great value for Perth. Highly recommended.
Rufus
Disappointing. The food was bland and overpriced. The restaurant smells awful. Will not return.
Asitha Perera
While the pork belly was good, the pasta was bland, dry and the seafood was hard. The decor was tacky and the the place smells like chlorine. Would not go back.
Terry J
Nah, over it!. Been here a few times, always found it 'just average' (but expensive).
last visit the prices seemed even higher and serving sizes smaller, and a corkage of $9.00 for 2 of us (and we only had one glass of wine each!). complained but got the usual crap reply.
The place is too big and the decor too fake, plus there's never many people there which results in noisy echoes.
Last visit was the pork belly - a very small square of belly with a spoon of cabbage salad on watery mash, not good enough!
And for a suburban restaurant - just too expensive.
Mujunglin
I came to Australia 13 years ago as an international student, I had my very first Italian dish at this restaurant and I just love it ever since the first visit.
I've been to many different Italian restaurants over the past 13 years but Roman Palace always has been my favourite restaurant.

The service is always great, the food is always nice. I always see the familiar faces there( the Father and the son) as this is a family owned and operated restaurant. I have great dinning experience and lot of nice memories here. Its so much more than " just a restaurant" to me.

$26.50 for take away spaghetti bol with 2 pieces of plain bread. Extortion.

This restaurant had been our.... This restaurant has been our fav restaurant for years, I love their home made gnocchi, my husband just can't get enough of the pork belly! Reasonable price and really friendly service.

We found this place when we first moved nearby and have not regretted it. We've dined from a number of perspectives-as a large group, a small gathering, an intimate couple & by take away. I have to say, we have never been let down. We are potentially strong critics-I am Italian & my partner a bar manager of many years for a popular restaurant. The friendly, homely service and rich, Italian taste are exceptional especially for this area.

I strongly recommend.
Melanie Robson
We love this place! We used to go here years ago and at a recent visit it was just as good. Yes it may be a bit pricey but this is a great old-fashioned family run restaurant with authentic Italian food complete with linen napkins. We had great service & delicious food; even our 8 year old scoffed his spaghetti carbonara. The decor is a little outdated but it's quaint & not horrendously loud like so many places these days. Friendly service & yum food, I definitely recommend this place.

Plain Food and Terrible Service. If your a family with younger children stay far far away! Never in my life have I experienced such rude customer service and thought to warn anyone thinking of taking their kids here. We came for a family members birthday and it included the whole family so there was quite a lot of us including all of our kids too. The kids were busy running around our table and being a bit loud as kids are especially when you have 5 in one room it's almost impossible to keep them quiet. Anyway while eating the very plain boring food the older man came up & picked me out out of all the other parents (even though I only had 1 child who was only 10 months old at the time ) and very rudely said to keep the kids under control as we were annoying the other customers even though the other large group there had kids too and didn't mind and there were only 2 other couples dinning in at the time. After that he and other staff would stand at the bar and kept flashing evil looks over at us. Sure I understand that it can be annoying having kids running around in a restaurant but I don't appreciate being treated that way. If he would have been polite and pleasant about the whole matter it wouldn't have been an issue. As for the food not one of us thought it was nice and there were 20 of us. It was majorly lacking in flavour and it seemed to me that they were budgetty on good quality ingredients. Also I ordered a plate of vegetables for my baby to eat but they couldn't even cook that properly. I do not recommend this place at all!
Nix
Pleasantly surprised. Overall a good experience, service was good and food was lovely. A bit on the expensive side but we had an Entertainment book voucher so we were all good :-D
I'm not sure on the decor, it was definitely unique - theres a rather large raised pond in the middle of the restaurant and lots of Roman style columns everywhere! I did like the high ceilings, it was almost like dining in a fake grotto lol. Ambience was good.
Food was good, and good sized portions.Tiramisu was great.
Would go again.
Tara
Did not like it one bit. St.... Did not like it one bit.
Staff were nice but that's it.
Food was extremely overpriced!
My partners steak was burnt and only had 4 chips on the side. Mushroom sauce contained no mushrooms and just looked like it had been slapped on the plate!

I ordered the fish... They said it was fresh but it was the size of the frozen steam fish you get at Coles. It was tough and overcooked.
And saturated with oil. And 8squares of potatoes! And cucumber
Payed a fortune for nothing.

Had a better meal at the craftsman the next night!
Won't be going there ever again and making sure all my family and friends dot go through what we went through.
Can run a business like that!

Not worth the price but good service. Agree with the reviews below- had dinner and the servings were small and not worth the price. Ordered to penne puttanesca for $22.50, which was a small amount of pasta with a few olives, basic tomato sauce and low quality parmesan. The rest of the meals ordered were average, though the steak was good despite being medium rare in parts and well done in other parts.

I went tonight with an open mind after reading reviews and i have to say the other reviews are correct . The staff are very lovely but the food is not worth the price . There is usually 7 of us that go out (my family) tonight only 5 and I paid more than i would usually per head .. Your thinking maybe we eat at places that are low budget but no I am happy to pay a few hundred dollars for all of us to eat but when I pay and we leave still hungry mmmmm not good So over all I will not return to this restaurant again... Also I am a big chilli mussel gal and yeh no not good no chilli at all and the mussels were over cooked ...
Marlene
We went for dinner the food was really good but I wouldn't say very child friendly my son fell into the pond and the owner seemed more concerned about his carpet getting wet than my son.
Yumyumtum
Everyone in our group enjoyed their meal but more vegetarian options please!

So-so price-oh no!. Im not going to say the food was terrible, because it was nice. it just wasnt up to the quality that it should be for what they are charging! the food is defiantly over priced!

the desert was really nice but they didnt make it, it was one of those ice creams in the shape of fruit
Uncle Jesse
Bring youre Gold Amex. Roman Palace is a big classy restaurant compared to other Cannington restaurants and they are certainly not shy about charging crazy prices. First let me say the food was OK probably slightly above average, the service was good, the owner was very friendly, and there was plenty of room to relax. On the down side, i can not justify paying those sorts of prices for food i can cook at home in a flash. I think this restaurant would do better in South Perth or Applecross where people are cashed up and dont care about price too much but still expect quality.
Reddo
This is the best Italian I've been to. Always an enjoyable experience.

Beautiful food atmosphere and friendly and attentive staff. Will definatly be coming again.

Fantastico!. Fantastic Food.. Fantastic Staff ... Fantastic Service .. Nothing much more to say ..

This place has wonderful ambience and a unique water feature in the middle of the restaurant. I always feel at home here because it is a family owned Italian business with wonderful owners who are very friendly and welcoming. It's a good place to go to when you're out for a peaceful dining experience with your family and also for an enjoyable take-away meal. For entrées the Pane Con Aglio (toasted garlic bread) or Bruschetta (toasted Italian bread with tomato, basil & olive oil) is nice and light. For pasta I can recommend the Lasagne Al Forno (lasagna with three cheeses & meat sauce), Spaghetti Con Polpette (pasta with olive oil, fresh parsley, tomato & meatballs) and Penne Pollo (pasta with chicken, sundried tomato, mushroom, broccoli & a creamy white sauce). I normally order these meals as take-away meals which are very substantial with rich flavours that are accentuated through the sauce. During my dining experiences I always go for the Zampi Di Agnello (roasted lamb shanks with a
