Review Japanese Restaurant Cheers - Perth

Larisha Sajhwani
Food was below average. We waited one hour for our food - it was cold, bland and the portions were tiny for the price!!! :o One lady was running the kitchen, cashier and taking our orders and while I felt bad because she's a lovely and sweet lady, the food just didn't do anything for us. It was bland and the dumplings were microwaved. :( maybe they need more staff. Hope they can fix it 🙏 🙂

This is the worst Japanese food I had in perth. I don’t know how this place gets so many good reviews. The tables and menus are oily. We waited a while to have someone take order for us because there were not enough staffs. The cashier lady had to go to kitchen to help all the time. You can’t see any staff most of the time. The food is definitely overpriced in term of its quality. It took a long time for the food to arrive. None of the food tasted good. They all seems to be microwaved or prepared long time ago. Miso soup was salty and sour. Teriyaki beef was dry and overcooked. Tasted like beef jerky. Yakitori did not look like it’s grilled. The pork in katsudon had a strong pig odour and was dry and stale. The rice was terrible, it felt like it had been sitting in rice cooker for too long, no texture at all. Please avoid this place at all cost! Don’t be fooled by the good reviews.

Wow what an amazing little secret place this little Japanese restaurant is! Awe inspiring from the traditional style entrance to the traditional style seating. The menu is very traditional but oh so delicious the meals may at busier times be slow but oh so worth the wait. The Chef and his wife were attentive and friendly but not intrusive. The meals are so close to being in Japan and lip smacking and morish. This little gem is absolutely of a restaurant tucked away is the best in Perth. Dishes were simple but so authentic and perfect. Definitely will be back and highly recommended for all.

When you walk in you are greeted by a nice auntie. The interior setting of the restaurant feels like your in an noire 90’s Japanese movie, it’s got the traditional seating along the wall as well western seats. The food is slightly expensive BUT the quality and the quantity makes this place totally worth eating at, I am surprised by the massive size of servings. The deep fried prawn entree was made with love and diligence, the flavours entwined by the thin batter and pre warmed soy sauce was balanced in taste. The sashimi was firm, fresh and melted in the mouth. The other main, teriyaki chicken was massive in proportion for the price paid. It was moist/supple and was not over powered by the sauce. The auntie that served us was friendly and pretty swell. The only whinge is that the parking outside is Wilson, so make sure to park around the corner.

Okay - seems Subiaco has 3 Japanese eateries ran by Japanese people. Cheers was last for me to try. Sashimi is fresh, sliced a little too thick to our liking. Ginger pork my friend had was a bit bland, she said. For me - the rice was a little - underdone. But overall; yummy tempura, the eggplant agebitashi was to die for! We all fought over that one. Ambiance was really traditional which I liked and overall pleasant experience with nice sake. Warnings: can get busy - only 2 people serving so allow generous timing. Vegetarian options very limited obviously as in many Japanese dishes Bonito flakes are used for flavoring.

Thank you for such lovely service and delicious sushi! Looking forward to our next visit :)

A cosy little Japanese restaurant with both traditional Japanese tables and western style tables. The food is delicious and the owners are so kind and hospitable.

Eaten in alot of Japanese restaurants around Perth this one is my favourite. Get out of the city into the suburbs I've found them to be better

Delicious, wholesome and honest Japanese food at this hidden gem in Subiaco cooked with love. The most authentic food I’ve had since visiting Japan. Will definitely be visiting again soon.

Best Japanese in Perth in a traditional setting. BYO, affordable and delicious authentic food. Run by a lovely couple. Order the deep fried pork skewers and sushi.

Have been coming here since uni days, so around 20 years now! Decor is a bit outdated, but quality has always been top notch and still is. Great tasting, simple, no frills Japanese food. Sashimi is always fresh, California rolls excellent, Agedashi Tofu, I think the best in town, Teriyaki dishes all so tasty, Tempura is crispy and light. Everything on the menu is really well done. Bringing my 4 yr old here now and she loves the teriyaki chicken and is spoilt by the friendly owners. Unfortunately, not as busy as it used to be. Always been a favourite and highly recommend it.

Great place to eat! Amazing atmosphere, friendly and kind owners and the best sushi in Perth!!! Suitable for both a family dinner or a date night

We tried Cheers for the first time tonight and recommend it for tasty, traditional fare with warm attentive service from the same family owners over 24 years.
We ordered the teriyaki fish and tempura prawns and vegetables. The fish was done well, sauce not too heavy or sweet and the serving size was very generous.
The tempura was crisp and fresh, with 5 prawns and a mix of pumpkin, sweet potato and zucchini served with a traditional dipping sauce enhanced with grated ginger and daikon radish.
Our host was attentive and friendly, regularly topping up the green tea and checking in.
We’ll be back to try the sashimi after seeing another table order it - generous portions and it looked super fresh.

This is one of my first Japanese restaurants that I ever
went to and it left a great lasting impression. It has a nice cosy atmosphere
and serves delicious, traditional Japanese food. The owners are so friendly and
always make me feel welcome. The food is so fresh and so tasty. I recommend
Cheers to my friends all the time.

One of my favourite Japanese restaurants left in Perth (Kido's and now Aoi have closed their doors). Lovely fresh sashimi. Welcoming and friendly Japanese couple. BYO only but they do have one type of sake available - just ask.

This is a great little place. The decor is a little dated but the food was excellent. Sashimi was fresh and well prepared, Agedashi tofu is one of the best I've had. Tempura was light well cooked and not oily at all. A must try. I could not believe it was so quiet at this time of year!

Really good food with friendly and polite husband and wife owners.
Has been consistently good for many many years. They always seem empty but have a lot of take away orders on the go

A hidden gem in Subiaco. It is never full but somehow the food was great.

I like the way they design their restaurant with the traditional japanese seating.

Food here are delicious. We ordered one Assorted sashimi and Teriyaki beef which is perfect for two persons. Sashimi is very fresh with wonderful Miso soup. Simple but warm. Will come again!

It felt like this restaurant was run by one person and i was worried if our order was going to come out at all. But not to worry, the jap food here is traditional, honest and super delicious. Service is a bit thin but staff are warm and friendly. I would come here again for sashimi and teriyaki fish.

I am from Brisbane I have been to this place 4 times in the last 4 months. Good service, quality food every time. The price is very reasonable, and for a small restaurant with owner running the whole end to end operation. You just can't fault it.

Love this place, my absolute favourite. I can eat so much food here. Quite often at other restaurants, halfway through the courses i kind of get over it and lose appetite a bit. Not so with cheers. The food here is simple but delicious. Favourite is the assorted sushi and sashimi, yakitori and their teriyaki dishes. But really everything tastes good and I've tried almost every entree and main on their menu. Oh and the Miso soup is the best.
The owners are very nice and welcoming, i come here on average twice a week and we usually have a quick chat and a laugh at the end of the meal. Check it out!

Loved this cute little Japanese restaurant in Subi which we found by chance on a Friday night! We were the only customers so we got attentive service. Husband and wife are the only workers, but they were so lovely and genuine. The wife did all the cooking - one dish at a time was cooked and brought out, so could potentially be slow if it were busy, but we were served promptly. Delicious, crispy prawn gyoza, succulent sticky chicken yaki tori and a platter of fresh salmon and tuna nigiri! I also had a huge clay pot of udon noodles with fish, egg and topped with mixed vege and prawn tempura. Yum! Generous portions of both food and green tea. Very good value for money!

My partner and I frequently visit Cheers. Enough so that the husband and wife team now know us by name, and remember our order which is very welcoming! The food is fantastic and we always have a relaxed night. I can't go past the takoyaki and katsudon - always fresh and so delicious. Definitely go to cheers when you're not in a rush, bring a bottle of wine and relax.
Take Me To Foodie Heaven
One of my dining partners and I shared the Assorted Sushi and Sashimi ($54) which is perfect to be shared between two. The nigiri sushi comprises of tamago, salmon, tuna, prawn and hamachi. There’s sashimi and tuna maki rolls and not forgetting, the salmon, tuna and hamachi sashimi. It’s a fresh array of sushi and sashimi with bright, attractive colours. The sashimi and sushi were fresh in flavour and they were delicious. Although I was sharing this with another, I still felt very full at the end.

Best Japanese in Perth if u want to wait a hour for ur meal. The owner is also the waiter and chef. Don't be in a rush if you would like to eat here.
Hidden Gem - Best Japanese in Perth. We found Cheers by accident after going to the derby last year, we hadn't booked anywhere for dinner and this was the only place without a line a mile long out the door. We were very warmly greeted by husband and wife team who solely run the restaurant. We ordered the Cheers Special and I have to say everything was delicious. We returned last night for an anniversary celebration and were treated to the same welcoming greetings and amazing food. 10/10 on every dish and aspect of this dining experience!
Can not recommend highly enough, you will not be disappointed!!

An authentic small japanese restaurant. We dined here for the first time after reading reviews on Urbanspoon. We were the only non Japanese there for our early meal. We were greeted by the owners like long lost friends. Mr and Mrs run this small establishment wonderfully. The smallish menu contains all the favorites. We loved the prawn and vege tempura and the makiroll. Quality ingredients in a traditional surrounding. For a real Japanese experience it is highly recommended.

Actually tried another Subi Japanese restaurant that had been recommended, but it was closed on Mondays. Landed here last night, and while some might have been off-put by the sporadic, one man service, the food was fresh, delicious, and spot on! Tempura prawns and vegetables were perfection: crisp, but no grease apparent on blotter paper they were placed on! Green tea was a generous serve, but if you're a thirsty type, I might recommend BYO, just because service might be slow on a busy night.

Great food and friendly service. We enjoyed a delightful 3 course meal at Cheers again on Saturday night. The food was delicious and well presented. The service was friendly and efficient. This is an amazingly good value restaurant.

MY FAV JAPANESE IN PERTH. This is my regular Japanese restaurant I go to. True authentic food here with great service. Try the fresh sashimi, Agadashi tofu, fried egg plant with miso sauce and the Teriyaki beef and chicken. We always leave with a full stomach.

AMAZING!!!!!. I'm calling it...best Japanese in Perth! Sushi and Sashimi was so fresh. Edemame was incredible and the Pork Goyza and Agenasu is a must try! Dont bother going to any other Japanese in Perth!!

If you want excellent traditional Japanese food, you should go here. They use fresh ingredients and the food is delicious. The owners are a delightful couple but I eat here because the food is authentic and well made. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

We sat for nearly half an hour with absolutely no service. They didn't even take a drinks order! There were two other small groups in the restaurant, who were getting served. We walked out in the end and went to another place! I do not know how they got such a high rating with this level of service....

Loved it! chicken yakitori, teriyaki and ginger beef was fantastic. Service was great, owners are very genuine, kind people. Highly reccomend black sesame icecream. Cheers is a must visit!!!! I liked the home style authentic decor.

Why have I not heard of this restaurant before . A Subiaco gem. Six of us went for dinner before going to the movies. Husband and wife team could not be more hospitable . Very welcoming . Food was flavoursome . We all had the Cheers banquet. Teriyaki chicken was fantastic. You felt you could be sitting in a small family run Japanese restaurant in Japan.
Simple
A real joy!. Down to earth husband and wife team have making people happy for something like 18 years. They're a kind, gentle couple who make you feel like you're a guest at home, no aching hipster trendiness here. When they say "enjoy your meal", they actually mean it. They play soothing Japanese ballads on the sound system, in a peaceful, wood panelled retro room, lovely and quiet because it wasn't full on a weekday. We liked their uber umami deep fried aubergine, gyoza, more deep fried tempura (tasty prawns) and generous sashimi platter, with perfectly seasoned miso soup. Prices are very fair, BYO is $2 a head, delicious green tea too. Easy parking in the courtyard outside, off Hay Street.

Food is average but the chicken teriyaki is fantastic! Everything is the same as 10 years ago including the salad potato. Great service.

Amazing. Last night was my first experience at Cheers, and wow, it was not what I expected. Firstly, the booking was a necessity; this place seems to be quite popular (judging from the amount of people turning away who didn't have a booking). You don't come here for a trendy night (it instead sports 80s decor), nor for stylish wait staff, no, you come here for the older couple (well, I assume couple) who somehow manage the entire restaurant (cooking, serving, waiting, cleaning, greeting) with its 20 - 30 customers.

Between myself and partner we ordered;
Entree;
a serving of Miso Soup each
Seaweed Salad
Prawn Dumplings

Main
Teriyaki Chicken
Tempura Rice

Everything had a traditional presentation and taste and was quite unlike anything I've ate in any Japanese restaurant before. From what I've been told, and my taste buds agreed, Cheers servers very tradition Japanese cuisine. Apparently the Sashimi is the best *ever* (we'll try that next time). For under $60, the meal was surprising and frankly stunning. I have to praise the couple running this place, they deserve a medal (I actually feel bad recommending their restaurant as they were so busy!).

Fresh sashimi every time and great simple Japanese food. The teriyaki sets are all quite good and they are generous with their servings, especially for the price.

For the last month I have been trying to get in here for lunch, but it was always closed at 12. Happen to drive back past at 1 and hooray the lights were on! Had the agadashi tofu & the set menu, this is my japanese staples. It was all fantastic, full of flavour & fresh. Can't wait to go back to my new favourite Japanese Restaraunt.
Love It
The new Sushi Station. Since Sushi Station Vic Park closed my partner and I tried every Japanese resturant we could find for a replacement and Cheers delivers on all counts. Love all the food the sashsimi is great the 9 peice the best value, the staff now know us and look after us so well. I keep going back

The replacement Fuji of Vic Park. Ah this place is too good!

Japanese staff (communication did prove to be a problem but basically point at what you want and it's fine), and the food is home cooked and tastes of Japan.

Ordered the eggplant, gyoza and chicken skewers and for main the pork cutlet and the ginger beef. Everything was cooked as it should be and for $74, no complaints.

I will def. be back to try the sushi and udon.

Service was slow but it's worth the wait.

If you're disappointed Fuji is no more, this is as good!
Mr Fussy
Ok but unlike the other reviewers I wouldn't have sashimi here.

Quality japaneese. This place is a nice little out of the way restaurant... but still in the center of subiaco. seriously some of the best jap ive had.
JaniceC
Quality food. Their menu hasn't changed since i first visited many years ago, if they have something new every now and then I'll go back more frequently. having said that, the food is always fresh and delicious, especially sushi and sashimi. I'll always go there when we have visitors, because they never fails me.

Superb Shashimi. Small japanese restaurant with typical decor. Shashimi has never dissappointed, and if the particular species is not up to standard is substituted. Tuna is usually sublime.
Udon noodles a favourite.
