Review Anna Vietnamese Restaurant - Perth

simon harris
Nice food withfriendly wait staff, but it has a cheap atmosphere. They should add some partitions and taller elements to make it feel more warm and intimate.
steelion
Great food with a great atmosphere really enjoyed the satay beef and the guests also very much enjoyed their meals. Would come back for another visit

Delicious, clean, and very friendly staff. Quite a number of options available, and they cater to allergies as well. Combination fried noodles are very delicious

Good hearty meals. Some dishes a little different from Vietnamese restaurants I've dined at before but still great meals.

Have always found Anna‘s to be reliable and tasty… It’s been a few years since I’ve eaten here and the takeaway I got tonight was just terrible - Bo Kho sooo tasteless. Really great service though and timely. Sorry Annas.

Pho is one of my favourite Vietnamese dishes and a great comfort food. Unfortunately, my expectations did not match reality. I was met with a lacklustre bowl of soup with meat that tasted like supermarket roast beef which had been thinly sliced. Though the servings were generous enough the meat wasn't to standard and the portion of bean sprouts offered was very meagre.

Amazing food at fantastic prices. Service was quick and friendly….,will definitely be back !!

Great service, delicious food and reasonable prices. BYO!

If I lived in Leederville I would here a minimum of once a week. Best Vietnamese food I have tasted in Perth. Affordable and authentic. Amazing menu with a huge variety of dishes to choose from. My new favourite place. Yum!!

Food was excellent, the fried chicken was the star of the meal. Service was friendly and the prices are fair. BYO was an added bonus, would come again.

The environment of this place is pretty basic, but the food is lovely and the service was friendly. The crab & sweetcorn soup was particularly delicious

What !! NO PHO ??? And you call your resteraunt Vietnamese?? How this place is still open & in Leederville ? I will never know. Don't waste your money.

Homage to MSG - ZERO RATING

Maybe fate maybe drink….all roads led to Anna’s Vietnamese Restaurant, on a cold blustery winter’s day in Leederville. A description of the food as atrocious and believe me it was, could not do the culinary experience justice.
Entrée – Deep fryer extravangza, the taste of old oil lingering like a seedy uncle hanging around too long around changing rooms. All overcooked to perfection

Main – Every dish drowned with that ubiquitous cornflower/Chinese white wine, soy sauce, sugar, oyster sauce and msg. Close your eyes and try to recognize the animal you’re eating. Devoid of anything resembling Vietnamese food.

11:30pm – driving that porcelain bus home………………………

Tasteless, unauthentic Vietnamese food, expensive, unhygienic, and stingy. Spent $70 for 4 dishes takeaway and all the containers were half full - what an absolute joke !!! And to top it off, I found a black hair in one of the dishes (I have blonde hair) which made me completely lose my appetite! I feel completely robbed of $70. Two words: never again !!! 😡😡

Jeez this place isn't great.. the quality of food is on par with a food court. The last thing I want to do is slag a family business but let's call a spade a spade.. it's called "Vietnamese" cuisine when it's more of a Chinese restaurant menu. There's far batter options out there.
Perth Eater
Really nice food here. Staff service could be better. Our table was forgotten about. But the food makes up for the average service. Good for takeaway food too.
Renato
Second time around and we hit the jackpot - whole crispy snapper with ginger. YUM!

While not my experience of truly authentic Vietnamese fare, Anna still have great food at a decent price. The spring rolls were served without lettuce and mint but were still tasty. Everything else was rock-solid. Will go back.

Great food, lots of flavour. Service was particularly slow even though we had asked for everything to come at the same time we were finished two main dishes and still waiting for the third. Good value though. We had entrees of satay chicken, which was an average satay sauce and the fried wontons, which were very small and a little over cooked. Mains we actually got were the BBQ pork, which was lovely and the garlic chicken which was my favourite.
James Valles
Went with friends, arrived early but was greeted by friendly staff and seated. Mains only ordered and were ready in less than 10 minutes. I ordered Satay Chicken and Onions with a portion of steamed rice and loved it!. The sauce was one of the best satay sauces i have ever tasted.

I wanted to try something new in Leederville, so we decided to give Anna's a go. Well, the first impression was not good, as the decor and ambiance are those of 80s canteen or something else equally abysmal when it comes to fittings and decorating, with ugly chairs, tables with white nylon (wrinkled) tablecloths covered with glass pane, and the piece-de-resistance - the melamine serving bowl and spoon. Add the cheap plastic chopsticks and the cheapest white serviettes I've ever seen. I don't know about you, but I don't enjoy eating on plastic dinnerware, unless I'm on a picnic or casual bbq. The menu was a "delightfully" plain, boring laminated in-house job, just to fit in with the vibe. We had spring rolls and some Vietnamese paper rolls, which were edible but nothing exceptional. The mains were some satay beef and I had the cinnamon chicken. They were OK, but on par with any similar food hall offering. We got out of there in about 40 mins. Given the variety of restaurants on offering on Oxford St, it puzzles me how this place manages to stay in business.
I personally won't be coming back.

We came here last night for a late dinner - it was quite full but we got a table for 5, it is BYO and so we popped around to the bottle shop near IGA for some beers and wine. We had prawn crackers and spring rolls to start - very nice. Then Bbq pork - which didn't look amazing but the flavour was excellent much better than expected. It's funny though, I've been to Vietnam and items like Bun No Xao and Pho are always a staple at Vietnamese restaurants usually....but they were missing from the menu here. However on request they did make the Bun No Xao for us and it was good. I'll be back here.

I come here every year with my Entertainment voucher. Apparently the owner changed not that long ago? From looking at the people running the place I'm pretty sure they're not Vietnamese. But the menu is still the same so maybe they still have the same chef?

I always get the Vietnamese fondue (which is more like a hot pot) and this has always been consistently good. Perfect for the winter days. The other dishes are average. Good but nothing in particular to rave about.

Would I come and pay full price? Probably not but this is one of the place I look forward going to with the voucher

We used to come to Anna all the time but for some reason hadn't been in about 18 months. We love the owner he looks like a Vietnamese Eugene Levy and under his watch the restaurant runs like a well-oiled machine. We came back one Saturday night and the food was fantastic - awesome spring rolls and satay to start, followed by the signature coconut fish, salt and pepper squid and the spicy pork cabbage rolls, a dish we hadn't tried before. We weren't disappointed, food was fantastic, can't beat the BYO and it won't be so long before our next visit!

Going for years and still going now. Surprised at the some what average reviews. We were there a couple of weeks ago and will be there tonight. There fresh spring rolls are great as is there seafood stir fry. This isn't a posh restaurant but very good Vietnamese nice and cheerful place. Give it a try....See you there.
Juliet
Went for dinner here with a group of 7. The spring rolls, wantons and prawn toast are small and disappointing. The mains were much better. We all enjoyed the beef ginger, salt and pepper squid, chicken lemon grass and chilli and Annas special rice - all of which were very tasty. Service was good.

Over priced, Average Asian Food. I have been to Anna Vietnamese a few times. Well aware that it is an average restaurant, but I thought, average food = average price. Tonight, I was wrong. There was a noticeable price increase, but no change to the interior of the restaurant, the food was no better quality, and neither was the service. $18.50 for a sweet and sour pork dish + $2.20 for rice. (actually it was our three rice orders into one bowl - I didn't order rice for three, I ordered one serve of rice) Not to mention the $4.50 for a 'lemon drink' which consisted of a tablespoon of squeezed lemon and a teaspoon of sugar? It used to be much nicer.

I will not be returning to Anna Vietnamese Restaurant nor would I recommend this restaurant.

Mixed vegetables is a plate of bok choy?. I really didn't enjoy my experience here. I normally opt for vegetarian dishes and chose to have the Stir Fried Vegies, my boyfriend had the Ginger Beef. When the food came out I had a plate full of bok choy with about three thin slices of carrot and two mushrooms mixed into it. I have never seen him so annoyed by food served at a restaurant, he asked the waitress if she would eat that dish for dinner and she laughed and shook her head! We asked if I could have some vegtables other than bok choy in my "mixed" vegetables, the food was taken out the back for about 20 minutes and then the SAME dish was brought out with some more carrot and mushroom on top. My boyfriends meat dish had a much greater variety of vegetables mixed into it! Just because I chose a vegetarian dish doesn't mean I want to eat a plate of bok choy.

Gone downhill. Have been to this restaurant many times over the years and it has slowly gone downhill. Dinner tonight consisted of prawn toast which I had to ask the waiter to identify as they did not resemble prawn toast at all. The special fried rice had an alarming green colour and was tasteless.... BBQ pork was just as bad. It was chewy, dry and tasteless. Salt and pepper squid was tender however very little salt and pepper. The chicken dish we had was far too salty. Service was below average. The restaurant is tired and has a dirty feel to it. Overall a very disappointing night.
I think it's time Anna's had a makeover, new chef or closed its doors. I will not be going back in a hurry!!
Food Forever
Very bland flavours. Ordered 6 dishes to share amongst a group of 8 and couldn't really tell what dish was what. None of the dishes were above average all just rather bland. Smallish servings too boot. Won't be back.
Mr. Foodbawse
Cheap and cheerful! Wholesome Vietnamese and attentive staff. Will be back!
Vortexoz
Bland bland bland. I came here with my girlfriend Saturday night. Entrees... rice paper rolls which were good. Vietnamese beef salad come out and it was chicken salad. We decided to let it slide. Mains...The BBQ pork was very salty chewy and bland with no sides just a couple pieces of celery and carrot. Cinnamon chicken was also very salty and dry and couldn't even taste any spices let alone the cinnamon. Basically a pile of meat on the plate. Prawn rice noodles were ok. We didn't finish the mains and didn't take them home. I wouldn't feed that to my dog! We've been to Annas several times, with each time worst than the last. Not coming anymore. The best thing about the dinner was the red wine I brought (Frasier Gallop Cab Merlot)
5Star
Absolutely the worst. We came here as a last resort so didn't expect much but didn't even get somewhat satisfied.
Ideal for those that have no idea.
Joe
Too overpriced and average (leaning to bad) food.... Dont want to be too harsh here but i should have known from the start when i didnt see any single asian eating in an asian restaurant....not a good sign!!

the food was way overpriced for what we got and honestly they all tasted pretty bland too. ive been to numerous vietnamese restaurant in perth and i know vietnamese food are very tasty.

on top of that, they charged us 2x chinese tea because we asked for a refill!!!
isnt a refill just adding "hot water"???? so hot water costs $3.5, times that by two, we had to pay $7.50 for tea!!!

Perth Asian Food and Culture Group,. I was hoping for a larger group to attend this place, and unfortunately on the night, only a small amount came, but the staff were extremely friendly, and did not mind too much with the cancellation.

This place is my favorite vietnamese in perth now, the Prawn toast was to die for, and i could eat it for every service, and we had an excellent choice, cinnamon chicken, prawn curry, fried squid, lemon grass beef, all very nice and will reccomend in future.
H
Not the slightest bit vietnamese.. anna, youre giving us viets a bad name.
Asten
Bland, bland, bland. We came here because it is in the entertainment book... but it was so bad that we didn't even take our leftovers home (which is a first!). We got spring rolls (bland), wontons (bland), prawn toast (which did not even taste like prawns and had no sesame seeds on it... which kind of makes the flavour). We got the lemon chicken, which was overcooked and dry with a bitter weird sauce. We got some noodle dish that had no flavour and hardly anything in it. I do not understand why anyone would come here. It was quick food but the service was average. Everything was average to below average. Will defo not be coming here again.
Brandon Alivojvodic
This place is absolute shite! The food was revolting and just bland the waiters can't even speak english for god sake..... Just plain disappointing wont be returning.

Happy Return Customer. Our family loves Anna. We come regularly and have always enjoyed delicious food and friendly. Never had a problem with anything. Would recommend it. Decor recently updated!

Not very authentic.. It’s ok if you’re looking for average food.... It’s cheap with the entertainment book discount but there are many better Vietnamese restaurants around.

Bottle cap in my rice!!. Very dissappointing food...went as a large group had a bottle cap in our rice.
gave them the benefit of the doubt and went a secont time...and got two nice big black hair in my duck!....two strikes...your out!!...oh and unclean knifes and folks....get your act together owners!!

My first visit, very disappointed very fatty food not what I expected for vietnamese more like poor version of Chinese, service poor ,our main came about 2 minutes after the first course first and last time for me
Sam3000
In one word: Terrible. One of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. It took ages to get waitstaff attention, even though it was a Thursday night and not busy, we couldn't get any water and then got two warm half-filled cups of it. The food was very bad/average. More Chinese than Vietnamese. Very salty/oily/bad in general. For good Viet I recommend Phi Yen in lake street, a bit more pricey but awesome food and a bit more authentic.
Matt Cruickshank
Food was pretty good for the price. More cheap and cheerful than anything else. We couldn't get our hands on any water though!?! I'll go back at some stage to try some other menu options.
Kym Nguyen
This is not what you call Vietnamese cuisine. What Vietnamese restaurant does not have the basic noodle soups such as pho, bun bo hue or com tam on their menu?!??? More like Chinese food to me. Disappointed!!!
Ilovefoodmore
Vietnamese? Really?? Tasted like average quality Chinese fare. Don't go here expecting Vietnamese.
Susan
Cheap and cheerful. Food is 'ok' nothing special. Cabbage rolls were nice.
Kelly
It's ok. Very noisy and the food is ok not great!
Danwoods
This is not Vietnamese.
Simone
Good, cheap and Simple. Great for what it is... Maybe not be the best example of Vietnamese food, decor very dated and menu not changed for years but it's always tasty, great prices, and good, prompt service. It's a Leederville institution for a reason.
Meg
Time for a change.. I suspect if a Vietnamese person ate here they would pass out in horror.

Annas has been a bit of a Leederville institution and has had the same menu and decor since I have known it (and I haved lived in leederville on and off since I was 7- 23 years!) - it's suffering for it.

With it's history I want to like it however it is average, The quality of the meat used is awful- the sauces are flavourless, watery and I suspected watered down from a bottle at that.

This type of Vietnamese might have satisfied demand in 1988 but there are so many better options around at a comparable price that I wouldn't bother with this one.
Fab Food Addict
I think it should be renamed Anna Chinese. The two dishes I ordered tasted nice (garlic chicken and rice noodles) but it definitely tasted more Chinese than Vietnamese. Had to ask a number of times for tap water which we were then charged for. When we asked for glasses five times, we were finally given coffee cups to drink from! Others ordered the banquet- food was cold and looked thrown together.. one of the entrees was deep fried sandwiches?! service was rushed and at times rude. food is not too pricey but so many better places to go in Perth!
Delizioso
Poor excuse for Vietnamese!. Coming from a Vietnamese, this place sucks. the sauces are pre bought, it shouldn't be called Vietnamese because it barely meets "food" criteria! Plastic plates and plastic chopsticks? Hmm....

Just don't go here, I'd hate everyone to think badly of Vietnamese food. Real Vietnamese food is actually really good.
Rhee Bee
I have been here before & it was great, but recently we went & there seems to have been a change of ownership of something. The food was bland & messy, the spring rolls were cold & the waitstaff poor.
Water Babe
Its okay

Disappointing. The rice paper rolls are really nice and fresh. Definitely a crowd pleaser.

Unfortunately, this may be the only nice thing I can say about this restaurant.

Anna Vietnamese confused me a little. It really stood out to me more as a Chinese restaurant then Vietnamese. It had no Pho dishes and only two noodle dishes (one egg noodle dish and the other a rice noodle dish). The dishes were not authentic at all and that alone was crushingly disappointing.

Tonight, I had the 'house speciality' chicken curry. The chicken throughout this dish was terrible quality, which led me to eat just the potatoes with rice. My partner wouldn't even try the chicken due to the amount of fat and grey matter evident.

The second dish we ordered was spicy (pork) cabbage rolls which was suppose to come in "special plum sauce". This plum sauce was sweet and sour sauce you get out of the bottle. There was no spice, let alone any flavour (besides copious amounts of salt) to these cabbage rolls.

Overall, a complete non-event. Not too sure why the reviews on Urbanspoon are above the 70% mark. Will not be returning and not much else to report on. If you do feel like venturing to Anna Vietnamese after this review, be sure to bring along your own alcoholic beverages. This venue is BYOB.
Blah
Cheap but not cheerful staff. Food OK pretty tasks and cheap ingredients. We could not get a bottle of water had to beg & got one glass for a table of eight. Please invest in some jugs! There are far superior cheap eats in Perth. Would not come back.
JoanB
A favourite. OMG the cabbage rolls and, I'm not sure what it's called, but its thin beef wrapped around prawn meat with satay sauce... AMAZING.
Casual
Very decent. Definatly one of the better "cheap asian" options around. If you order the "right stuff" it's amazingly authentic Vietnamese, the staff are really friendly and the food is definately better than what you pay. Good spot for an informal dinner with some close friends.
Nadine O
Torn.... I wanna say something nice because the service was so friendly, with a smile and prompt. I hope we caught them on a bad night as the food didn't live up to its promise.

Satay chicken starter was good. Lemon chicken and... I can't remember what my brother ordered - weren't finished. Very interesting to get fried chicken still on the bone! Quite difficult to eat in the outdoor cinema at Luna, and they were the ones that suggested we order at Anna's???

Will try again though. I wanna like these guys, the staff were lovely.
Oscar The Grouch
Cinnamon Chicken Delight. Have been to this place a couple of times now since moving close by and every time I have been impressed. The service is more than adequate but what really counts is the food. Anna does not disappoint, flavour combinations are subtle, dishes fragrant and the choice extensive. If you don't try the cinnamon chicken dish you are doing yourself a disservice. Also a great place to take a group and you can BYO.
Meister
Fresh and tasty. Have been to Anna a few times and never been disappointed. The vietnamese cold rolls are always very fresh and tasty, and i like the way they do their squid dishes as well. BYO an added bonus.
Thekitchencrusader
Cheap, but never nasty. Really good cheap meal. It's a good idea to book, and remember to take a bottle of wine.

The specials are all delicious slow cooked meals, I highly recommend them over anything on the menu, even though everything is delicious anyway.
Jack
Below average food in a very poor atmosphere. Had the crispy chicken in plum sauce and the size of the pieces were far too large to be picked up with chopsticks or be eaten with a fork/spoon. Also had the egg noodles which were tasteless and had over cooked chicken that was dark grey in colour. Will not be going again.
Anni
Coming back, too much to choose from. Have only tried the take-out version so far but what we had (cabbage rolls, noodles & prawn toast stuff-sorry, don't have the menu handy) was great, nice price and enough to tempt us back to dine in and try more soon. Service was friendly and take-out meal ready quickly.
MmmDessert
Wouldn't give it a go.. Went out with a large group of people. Our experience was almost laughable. We were seated on two separate tables that had been pushed together (one circle table, one rectangle) and the space was really cramped. We had to hunt down a waiter to order after 40mins of waiting. The dishes came out erratically. Half way through eating it started raining outside and water was rushing down the wall (from a hole in the ceiling) so much that we had to move the table away from the wall as people were getting wet (thus we were even more cramped than we were to start with). Two people didn't even get their meals until about an hour after we ordered. We cancelled them as we were about to leave. The food wasn't anything great. I will not be coming back here ever again!
Hungerpangs
With so many others to choose from, go elsewhere. Ordered takeaway from here last night (only cos everywhere else in Leedy was busy) and it wasn't great.

Walked in and the air had that mixed Asian food/cleaning product smell.

Not sure if that was in my mind, but even eating back at home (garlic chicken/beef curry/spring rolls/ rice) everything had a slight detergent taste, like they hadn't rinsed their crockery/cutlery properly before use.

Was cheap, around $35 but def. not keen on eating there again.

Blah.
Hgreen
Not the best option. We ordered the deep fried spring rolls for entree, satay chicken, salt and pepper squid, stir fried tofu and vegetables and anna's special fried rice. The staff weren't that helpful ... we were sitting next to the fridge and after asking a couple of times for water just gave up and grabbed a bottle from the fridge. Having no water glasses, we also grabbed some from a nearby table. Food was below average, everything came strangely on a bed of cabbage - can't help but think this was to make the servings look bigger! Satay chicken, fried rice and spring rolls were tasty but the squid was rubbish. The other thing that is a bit odd is the all-plastic dinnerware (bowls, plates, etc) ... this went out of fashion during the 80's and gives the whole place a tacky feel. Won't be going back.
Paige Berdal
Say no to soggy green rolls. Hm...well it's not a 5 stay restaurant but a little more attention from the wait staff would have been nice, as it wasn't busy. I don't like people touching my straw or cutlery too close to where my mouth is going to g - it's unhygenic! Sadly this happened, and the cutlery was also plonked directly on the table. no serviette to barricade the fork from the myriad germs!
Food wise, well you can't go wrong with stuff edchicken wings, and the satay sticks were great, but i was too adventurous with the mains, spicy cabbage rolls - soggy cabbage, what was I thinking? So I ate my friend's cinnamon chicken with her which was really nice. Tried to make up for my bad choice with a banana fritter ( wanted deep fried icecream but the waiter told me there was no coconut on it, and there was) which looked like a deep fried turd, but tasted good. Presentation clearly not a priority but that's ok. I'll go back again, but will only order the safe dishes!
Srand
Very average food. Pretty rude & unhelpful waitress. We used Entertainment Voucher which made it cheap. There are better in Perth
Mogan
Below average food that sticks in the throat thanks to the waiters not even hinting at the possibility of free tap water.
Shem
Good food for a large group. Nice banquet option for hungry mouths. Love the sand castle rice buckets.

Leederville Legend Status. Anna's has been operating for a couple generations now and a favourite of Asian students across the road at the TAFE.

Great low to mid range Vietnamese. Good for large crowds or familys. BYO wine and beer. Try the cabbage rolls or whole fish for something different. Whole fish can take a while but great for a group. Crispy chicken and the Beef curry also good.

Also do takeaway and service is pretty quicik and fast. Always reliable.
The Real Burger King
Basic westernised Vietnamese food that's cheap, but quite plain. Good for those who like thier food not too exotic.
Ian G
A Oxford street tradition, and the only change in all the years I have been going is the fish tank has gone. Reasonably priced with amazing service for the number of aayaff employed
Rob
Anna Vietnamese Restaurant is a casual eatery, quite old school but popular with locals. It can get busy at times, and is suitable to bring the kids or come along in a group. The menu is quite long, though contains mostly standard Asian restaurant fare – don’t expect any ‘pho’. There is nothing surprising on the menu, but if you choose wisely or go often enough you will find something satisfying. The restaurant is BYO, with two handy bottle shops in just down the road in Leederville.
Natalie Tierney
My partner wouldn’t even try the chicken due to the amount of fat and grey matter evident.

Dinner at Anna’s was exactly what we were after – something quick and simple. The dishes we ordered were tasty without being outstanding. We’d probably eat at Anna’s again but wouldn’t go to Leederville especially just to do so. Take note, if you’re a fan of Vietnamese broken rice or pho – unless there’s a secret section of the menu I missed completely, both are notably absent.
