Review Trattoria Valdarno - Perth

Mallika De Toni
Ordered the Veal Cotoletta. Idk what they put in the crumb but it tasted like soggy cardboard. Thankfully I could eat the veggies and the sauce. But the veal was absolutely disgusting. I also had my husband try it and he confirmed that it not only did not taste good, but it tasted off, his exact words were “it has an after taste like rotten eggs”. I never leave bad reviews or complain about food at restaurants but this was so bad I just had to say something. All the other reviews seemed reasonably high so I thought I was ordering from a reasonable place. Big mistake :(

We had our parents 50th anniversary here and had about 45 people and wow everyone left full and really impressed with the amount of food and the quality was fantastic. This place is absolutely awesome and the owners are amazing and made everyone feel very welcome and nothing was to hard. We'll definitely be going back.

Great little suburban restaurant, friendly staff and good food.

Great place outstanding service very friendly staff will recommend to everyone to go there

Sorry only 3 stars because my meal was disappointing but my dining companions enjoyed theirs. My seafood paste dish has 5 muscle shells but only one muscle floating in sauce 😄, tasteless firm imported(?) prawns and the tortelloni was thick and not very delectable.

Had their arrabbiata pasta the other day, which is meant to have some spice factor. Honestly they must have been out of chilli because there was no spice to speak of whatsoever. I have had better aeroplane food. If the chef reads this, maybe add some chilli and perhaps go easier on the tomatoes.

Dropped in forty minutes before closing and the chef stayed late to cook us two delicious meals. The staff were lovely and accommodating. Thank you so much for being good to us!

We have been going to Valdarno sporadically for years, and only because it’s been close to home. It has its ups and downs. Last week we had a main of rankin cod fish that looked great but was dry. $36 for overcooked fish. The pasta was absolutely delicious. Having spent a lot of time in Italy, including top restaurants, I’m disappointed at Valdarno’s high prices for (mostly) home style cooking and basic decor.

After many years of loving this restaurant for tasty, hearty food we were so disappointed on our last visit. All 6 diners at our table had very bland, tasteless dishes - the fish was dry & over cooked and the pork belly tough and over salted. Even the legendary pasta was uninteresting. I don’t know what’s gone wrong in the kitchen of this restaurant that was always so reliable.

Went for dinner with family, everyone who ordered pasta said it was very very average. One person ordered the steak and it was literally raw, they replaced it and apologised but still should have never gone out. I ordered the chicken breast which was really nice, but it was the only nice meal of the night unfortunately. Service was slow but they were lovely. Won’t be hurrying back unfortunately

My "local" italian restaurant. What I love about the restaurant is the family friendly atmosphere and personable caring staff who make the time to get to know their guests. Their food is simply home cooked italian style and it presents as consistently being made with love and tradition. Every time I go there my family are made to feel a part of their family and that vibe is very special and authentic.

Love this place!!
Authentic, generous servings!
The pastas are amazing 🍝 💚
Cosy family restaurant and it's BYO ☺️
Friendly and welcoming staff.

A very Italian Italian restaurant. Real Italian bread rolls on the tables which have linen tablecloths on them. Lovely service - a bit pricey but the pasta we chose was home made and tasty. Looking forward to when we next eat here.

A family favorite for many years and our local. Gorgeous home cooked style Italian food, with ever changing daily specials for mains and pasta, wholesome food, not too creamy, oily or mass produced, has been made with love and it shows! Lovely staff, always polite warm and accommodating.

This restaurant has a lovely cosy feel and a welcoming, authentic atmosphere. It is so lovely to have an open fire in the winter! The meals are well priced and good value.

Tomato sauce in the pasta tasted like it came out of a Campbell's soup can 😕 not in a good way unfortunately. I expected better considering all the current rating.

Came here for a private lunch time function. It was a set menu with the food being good honest Italian food. Not the best I've had but far from the worst. Atmosphere was ordinary and typical but the food & service made up for what lacked in atmosphere.

Fantastic honest Italian food. We are once a week regulars here and they never fail to delight. Service fantastic. Accommodating and friendly. Nothing is ever a problem. Italian staff makes for a true authentic experience. We love the bread rolls and portion sizes are most generous to say the least. We love VALdarno. Can't recommend it enough.

Stuffed gnocchi. Gnocchi stuffed with mushrooms with cherry tomatoes red wine sauce is the winning dish. However it is slightly pricey for a vegetarian dish. It costs 36 per portion. Service was friendly.

Best Italian I have been to in Australia. Brilliant service friendly staff and one of the cheapest eats in town. If you are after real Italian food not the usual slop you get else where I would give it a go. There is a bottle shop next door and BYO had no corkage. The bread was excellent and free when I asked the waiter he explained that the chef bakes fresh every day. Can't recommend this place enough. It's tucked away but well worth finding.

Decent food but on the expensive side, shame about the rude front counter service. We were regulars here, food is mostly tasty, prices are fairly high but the reason we won't be going back is the lady at the front desk who is very rude and unpleasant - today we dared to politely asked for more bread for the kids and this caused her to be unhelpful and pull faces when she thought we weren't looking. I can get abused much cheaper elsewhere.

Tops. Top marks in all catagories -friendliness, service, quality, quantity, variety, selection, price and value for money in all food catagories - Antipasti, Primi, Secondi, Dolic

Don't go. So disappointing. Returned my meal and then had a waiter try and convince me it was the meal I ordered. Could not find the beef underneath a mound of spinach. This was hiding the disgusting meat. Will not be returning

Don't drop the ball. As a favourite for years, there are cracks appearing. Ordered the entree special, which was packed with salad but little of the special, which was disappointing for the price. The roast chicken was overcooked, and lacked flavour and seasoning. Stick to the mains specials would be my advice.

Valdarno OMG. This is it the best , great food, great value and all the those things that make it a great night out with the family. Rang for a unplanned dinner with the family and they could not do enough to get us in even though they were fully booked. This place is pure italian great staff and the food is the best and so much of it well done you guys keep doing what you are doing.

Beautiful Place to Dine. My family and I love to go out to Valdarnos for dinner occasionally, and it never fails to impress. Each time I have the chicken cottoletta which is delicious and always take home the leftovers due to large meal sizes. The meals are really worth what you pay! Not too expensive, and the staff are so friendly and lovely. Definitely recommend!!

Reminds me of McCains Frozen Meals. As a local restaurant close to home, I have frequented Valdarno for the last few years. Today was a different story however as opposed to the usual good food and service that I receive from them, and it has made me ask questions of how their food is prepared and the quality of their chef/s.

Ordered a lasagne (which cost me $22 as well!) for takeaway, and on eating it, the centre of the lasagne was cold. I literally ate the lasagne about 2 minutes after I got it as well because I live on the same block! It seems to me as though it was cooked a while ago and reheated in a microwave (and badly as well!) for the outside to be lukewarm and the inside to be cold. You would expect a restaurant charging the prices that they do to cook to order... I had to microwave the lasagne again once I was home because it was horrid. In addition, the ingredients used seem to be of a lesser quality than it was some years ago.

Valdarno seems to have gone downhill lately. They've lost my business.

A suburban gem. Went on a Tuesday night. Service good and friendly. Pescatore dishes, spaghetti, linguine and risotto ample and tasty. BYO with new wine glasses supplied for each different bottle. Sat on veranda, no intrusive 'music'. Had a great 3 hours where we were able to hear each other with ease.
Could well become my favourite meeting-eating place.

Simple the best so far in Perth
Thank you Enzo
Delicious
Used to be better. I've been coming here for the past three years and went again recently but have noticed that the food has changed a lot - for the worst. The food is moving away from the traditional flavours and now a lot of the menu has been commericalised (think Caio Italia) with heaps of oil and heavy on the cream. Seasoning was not quite right (e.g. squid overly salty whilst pescatora had no seasoning at all). Not sure what's happened but me thinks the sous chef has moved on. Really disappointed as this use to be an old favourite but don't think I will go back again.

Solid Italian-well worth it. I've been to Valdarno's 3 times. Once with a large group that included a few kids. Twice with my wife. It's undoubtedly the best Italian experience we've had in Perth. We've had a variety of dishes and we tend to share so we've been able to experience a lot of the menu.

The pasta is fresh and has been cooked perfectly every time. We've had gnocchi and ravioli, both solid and even with sharing dishes the portions are large enough to provide a lunch left-over.

The sauces are nice. You can taste the complexity of flavours and spices they use, it's not just crap tomato sauce dumped on your plate, clearly some thought and trial and error was put into perfecting them.

Sadly it's been about a month since we last went, so the details of the meals aren't on the tip of my tongue, but I've been meaning to write this review for a while and since I tend to get more fired up on negative reviews, I thought it would be good to share some love for one of the hot spots worth visiting.

The BYO next door is convenient and the prices are well worth the quality and portions. We'll be back.

Favourite spot. This is my favourite restaurant in Perth, have been over 10 times and usually try and go every other month.

Why?
Simply put the food is great, the wait staff are pleasant enough and the owners are warm and welcoming.

Best Seafood Marinara I've had ANYWHERE.

Also BYO Beer and Wine; with bottle shop located nextdoor makes for a perfect night out.

Great food. Thank you for a wonderful night of great food and wonderful service - I highly recommend Valdarno to anyone who wants great quality Italian food.

Great service by excellent wait staff, shame about the food and what they charge for it. Low quality ingredients badly cooked. Oh dear. It was very very ordinary, way below home cooking. They should have paid us to eat it. The coffee was ok though.

Worst service ever. Arrived and gave the manager out reservation details, didn't get taken to our table she just pointed at it and told us to sit an a table that hadnt been set. Waiter took about 20 minutes to clear our plates away when the place was half full and "didn't know what the fish was because the box didn't have a name on it" great.
All bad things aside, the food was very good and the portions were huge! Great value for money and the gnocchi was amazing! Just need to work on the service, a lot.
Jill Yeoh
As average as it can be. For the amount of money I'm paying, I wouldn't want to wait for an hour for my meal and eat food that's not worth the price. I suggest if you were to dine here, please be there as early as possible. x
Leonie
Food ordinary, Service lousy. Mostly we were ignored. We opened and poured our own wine, waited a long time for our order to be taken and, after our main course, we could not attract the attention of any of the waiters. They walked up and down without looking in our direction. Eventually I went to the counter to ask for a dessert menu and to order coffees. My scaloppini was tough and my friend's chicken was swamped in sauce to the point where it drowned the vegetables. A very disappointing night out. We will not go back.
Roberto
Wasted meal. It baffles me how a 'chef', and I use this title lightly, can honestly think that it is acceptable to present the quality of food that was presented to me here. The Capretto (goat), that quite clearly went from the fridge to the plate via a short stint in the microwave, was cold and swimming in fat. The Lasagne suffered the same fate, cold in the middle with a more than generous helping of tomato sauce fresh from the tin. The Vongole (clams), flavourless and the pasta they found themselves in was much the same. The list goes on but needless to say, everyone was left wanting. The final bewilderment of the night... it was busy. Reading the other reviews, let me tell you this is far from "authentic". I don't get it, but maybe I'm just easily disappointed.
Jenny Tu
Very nice pastas, good flavours not overbearing. Tasty dinner rolls.
Maria
Authentic, simple, healthy and tasty with friendly service. We saw huge desserts going to other tables and thought we'd order some to go. But ours were dismally small! A disappointing end to an otherwise excellent meal. Service was very good.
Jane
Family favourite. Love the food which is authentic and always well prepared. Friendly and helpful staff who will even package up dessert to take home at the end of meal. Fantastic to have a local that is always reliable.
The Round Eye
Meh. This place was nothing to write home about. Nice place, with nice food. Service was great which is always a good thing but the food was not great compared to other italian places in town. Ordered the baby clams which were ok. The selling point would have to be there pasta which is very good. Prawns were well over cooked which to me is a big no no when it comes to a restaurant. Avoid the arrancini and potato croquet, as it seems like they came out of a frozen bag in IGA. Probably would go back as it is a good environment for a dinner and a few bottles of red, would just have to watch what i ordered.

Refreshing. A rare breed, well priced, good food, pleasant service, this place shames many more expensive flasher restaurants. It's quiet and small but if your after a good well cooked no fuss meal this is the spot, plus a bottle shop next door and no corkage ! The managers should be on the WA tourism commission board, they have the right attitude.

Valdarno's demonstrates that you can do good food at reasonable prices. Never disappointing. Ate there Saturday night in a largish group - food was good, service friendly and efficient and prices very reasonable. Just a warning - the place empties at about 10 so don't expect a late night, altho the staff are happy for you to stay longer
Rob Collins
Nice restaurant, relaxed and very friendly staff, the food is fresh & reasonably priced. Could have had a few more veggies with my Fillet Steak, but that's a minor gripe. Overall a good experince

Entree bruschetta was superb, a great difference from the usual diced tomato and onion. Mains took a while to come out for some reason, however staff kept us appraised of, and apologised for, the delay and the meals were worth the wait.
Bim
Nonnas kitchen. Good old Valdarno's. Homemade, fresh, delicious Italian food with generous servings....it's also in a quiet neighboured, BYO and next to a bottleshop. What more could you want?

Had some awful fish n chips here about 2 weeks ago. The salad looked older than any I've ever seen. However the service is usually good as us pizza in house
Zahra Leyla
They do takeaway, too. Fantastic food and huge servings. I only wish we had bought some of their delicious cakes to take home as well. The complimentary dinner rolls were a nice touch, too.

Too good to be true. Where can you go to enjoy good Italian food, home cooked style, decent prices, friendly staff and easy to get to? Trattoria Valdarno is the sort of place you can return to regularly because it's like eating at home. Non pretentious, comfortable and great food. Try the spagbol for an example of simple but awesome. Yet another well kept secret nested in the heart of Nedlands / Dalkeith.

Leave the decor alone. If they fix the decor it will be too good to be true. The food is authentic and always reliable. The staff are polite and it is easy with kids. If they fancy it up, we won't be able to afford to take the kids along.

Just Like Romaaa!!. Didn't realise we could eat good Italian after eating in Italy, but here is Valdarnos with some tasty, homemade and fresh food consistently. My favourite is the Chilli Mussels (ask for the Italian Style!), Liguine and Prawns and of course, finished off with homemade lemon meringue. Great staff and service and best of all great food, which is such a rarity in Perth.

Truly the benchmark.. How do I describe Valdarno? It is my favorite restaurant in Perth.

I along with with many of my friends have been going to Valdarno for years and the food has always been fabulous. The staff are an absolute delight, they know the menu and how to look after their customers. The place is probably one of the best kept secrets in Perth and as far as I'm concerned is a benchmark by which all others should be judged.

Dining at the other so called 'elite' restaurants in Perth makes for a huge wake up call when compared to Valdarno, in service, food quality and price. Entrees, mains and deserts are to die for and the only problem any of us ever have when we go there is what not to eat!
Didley
A favourite. Authentic family owned and run restaurant. The food is consistently good and staff are knowledgeable and friendly. you need to book as it is busy every night of the week. The seafood lasagne (special) is heavenly.

Dalkieth's best kept secret. Ugly as all hell, but fabulous food and service. Byo too! You needtonbook as there's never a free table.

Homestyle Italian. Good homestyle cooking. Great place to take kids. They need to do something about the decor, its very tired and boring. Typical of many Perth restaurants that lack imagination.

Overall Valdarno's is a great authentic and very homely restaurant with very great food. At a very reasonable price it is definitely one of the more authentic and great italian restaurants in Perth.
