Review Yoshiya Japanese Restaurant - Perth

Michelle Theobald
Some of the most delicious japanese food i have ever eaten and 5 star service.
Mark Wild
I have been going to this place for years. The food is great. Every time I travel I always compare the Japanese food back back to this place and have not found any place that does it as well as this place. Very consistent and the quality of the food is fantastic. Decor could be updated but the food is what we come for.

We have been eating here for years. No it's not flash . It's not in the fashoinable location. But as a person who would eat Japanese at least once a week this is a serious example of more classic style. Probably the best sashimi in Perth.
Adrianus Kleemans
A bit pricy, but nice and well-cooked traditional japanese cuisine. Maybe ask for whats included (salad/rice/veggies) as we had some trouble with this. Green tea ice cream as a dessert is a must!!

Highly recommended. Perfect example of why you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. Located in one of the more neglected parts of Perth, Yoshiya is one of Perth's oldest dining gems the buildings outer facade gives no clues to the quality authentic Japanese dining available within. Really good fresh food, amazing miso, and friendly service from the staff. Gave 4 stars because it is BYO only, so stock up on Asahi and Sake on the way.

Perfect Japanese food! The food here is great, the service is also good. I have visited the place many times with different people and they all agree that it is an excellent place.

If there was a -5 stars I would give it. The food was good but it was expensive and the service was absolutely and utterly deplorable. They violated personal space by rudely picking up your drink and checking if it was empty or not without asking. The wait was so not worth the money nor the food. What a shame.
Nadine C
A very average experience. The decor is dated with no music, the wait staff were pleasant but the manageress was blunt and changed her mind about the menu several times. Meals over priced. Not recommended.
Andy
A<br/> true let down. I feel I definitely did not get our money's worth here. I had a incredibly unwelcoming experience here, with the manager being extremely rude toward me and my girlfriend. I think the food was pretty average and nothing spectacular. Definitely will not be returning!

I have walked past this place so many times and never even noticed it was there. Last night (16/08/2016) I came here for dinner with my dad and brother. The service was good, but that was expected as most of the place was empty at 7:00pm and we were one of two tables that were filled.<br/><br/>Upon looking at the menu, I noticed that there was not much variety. I did not expect there to be any modern Japanese or fusion dishes because I knew they served traditional Japanese food; however, the menu at Yoshiya was limited beyond even my expectations.  In the end, we ordered:<br/><br/>Agedashi tofu (about $8-9, I can't quite remember)<br/>Seaweed salad with octopus($14)<br/>Large mixed sushi ($35)<br/>Gyuniku teppanyaki (i.e. grilled beef fillet) ($30)<br/>Tori teppanyaki (i.e. teriyaki chicken) ($22)<br/>Rice ($2 each)<br/>Green tea (can't remember how much, I think $1.50 each)<br/><br/>I wanted to order their grilled pink snapper but I was told they did not have any that night, which was why we chose teriyaki chicken. I am glad we did because that and the sushi were probably the best dishes that we chose. <br/><br/>I really enjoyed the sushi platter as everything was quite fresh and the cuts were excellent, if a bit lacking in variety (again). However, everyone felt that there could have been a few more pieces for $35, especially as it was described as 'large'.<br/><br/>I was unimpressed with the salads that came with the teppanyaki dishes as they were essentially some chunky pieces of iceberg lettuce, roughly chopped carrot and salad dressing. I would expect, especially if a place is going to charge $22 for teriyaki chicken, that at least the salad would be finely sliced or otherwise better presented.<br/><br/>Overall I would describe the meal as mediocre. There was nothing wrong with the food but nothing stood out and it was not good value for money. I am certain my dad left hungry after having spent approx $30p/p in what I consider a casual dining restaurant. We would have ordered more but there was nothing else on the menu we wanted.

The service was good and attentive. <br/>The food is very plain and has NO flavor. <br/>Probably should have left when we realized we were the only table there on a Saturday night. <br/>Chef lacked teppanyaki entertainment skills. <br/>My teriyaki chicken was a frozen chicken thigh cooked on the grill, sauce added and served next to ice burg lettuce. <br/>The restaurant also isn't licensed however they sold us a bottle of sour and probably off wine. (Overpriced by about $45)<br/>This was a horrible dining experience and we will definitely not return...

First time at Yoshiya Japanese Restaurant and my partner and I absolutely loved it! Everything was delicious. My only criticism is that the servings are on the smaller side.. But that's probably us being greedy and wanting more as it was all so good. I have never tried macha icecream and I think it was the perfect dessert to finish this meal.

The Yakiniku set is pretty good. I like the classic eatery design of this place. I went for the lunch set. The beef is really tender and it comes with miso soup, salad and rice. I would definitely go back again.

When we first arrived just before 12 on a Tuesday, the restaurant was empty. We were promptly seated by the lady owner whom I found a little intimidating at first but it could very well be because there wasn't any other patrons and I felt like she was watching us like a hawk the whole time. However, in the next 45mins or so while we were there, the place got reasonably busy, and it was quite visible<br/>that most of them were returning (quite mature) regulars.<br/><br/>"Oh, WOW." was all that managed to escape my mouth after I had my first bite of the beef yakiniku. The dish arrived with thickly cut slices of beef fillet that have been cooked to perfection. Charred on the outside and medium rare on the inside, glistening in daylight from the flavourful marinade. <br/><br/>I think the obviously old and bare interior only adds to the whole atmosphere. It really felt like I could've very well been inside a restaurant somewhere in a small Japanese town. <br/><br/>Needless to say, I was back by the following week. I guess Yoshiya has just scored themselves a couple of new regulars!

My personal top 3 Japanese restaurant in town. If you like Beef Tataki then this is the best place that offers the best bang for your buck. Much much better than your Wagyu beef tataki at Nobu. Another star dish for me is the chicken teriyaki, the best in Perth so far. It's been around for almost 20 years.

One of my favourites. Decor is crap. Service is efficient but lacking in style. <br/><br/>The people great and they remember you !! <br/>The food is the reason you go there. <br/><br/>Sherry and Francis have been doing this for a long time now and after 10 years I still go back a few times a year. My don now takes his dates there even, just because the good is that good. <br/><br/>David does the best sashimi in Perth by my books. Doug's teppanyaki prawns are a must as on occasion they actually bust in your mouth. <br/><br/>Bang for buck it's a real winner for quality food. It's a place you just know that regulars go go to. <br/><br/>Just accept the decor is what it is.

Just wonderful. Only warm sake available, that's the only thing. Amazing food. Service is efficient, nothing more, that's all we need anyway.

Often came here for lunch when I worked nearby, Yoshiya offers a different dining experience with flavours and service that leave you relaxed and satisfied. I would recommend this restaurant when you want to have a lunch discussion with colleagues. It is quiet and away from the bustle of the rest of the CBD.

John. Fantastic try the meat, shusi always cut the best and fresh.tempura fantastic and how do they keep the prawns straight, salad dressing the best ive tasted.

My favourite Japanese in Perth. This place has the best japanese food. Yes you pay a little more, but their cuts of sashimi are amazing! The hostess is a little reluctant to smile, but once she warms to you, you see that its just her way. Great food, fast service... delicious!
N Com
Amazing fresh Japanese. Our favourite in Perth and surrounds. Couldn't recommend it enough.
Jen
Nice lunch. I had the tempura lunch set for $15, which was decent value. Included rice, miso soup, fruit dessert and tempura was generous, with two prawns, two pieces of fish and one piece each of carrot, pumpkin and zucchini. All tasted great, tempura dipping sauce was especially good. <br/>Woman in charge of front of house seems to resent customers and has a million better things and people on her mind - the typical Perth story. Don't make me feel like an inconvenience for coming in to your restaurant. The other waitstaff were pleasant and trying hard.
Jon
My Fav!. This is by far the best Japanese restaurant in Perth in terms of food quality.<br/>Nothing fancy like Nobu but the chefs here have better skills and experience for sure.<br/>The sesame coated sushi rolls are the best among all other great dishes.<br/>The restaurant is BYO as well. Must try!

So surprised after my experience here as I had heard so may great reviews ( and it happens to be within walking distance from work ! added bonus)<br/><br/>I ordered the Yasai Teppanyaki (cooked vegetables ) $12, I wanted just the veggies but was told i had to order minimum of $15, so I said great - rice too thanks the very straight faced icey lady (assume to be the owner ) who took our order asked if I would like the large veggie instead of the rice and I said sure - assuming that would be the $15 option that way I wouldnt need to order the rice too as I dont eat rice.<br/><br/>The group I was with all enjoyed their food and mine was nice but small - nothing amazing, so you can imagine my surprise when the bill for mine came to $24 for my fist full size portion of lightly cooked (mostly) runner beans, 2 pieces of broccoli, 2 mushrooms and a few snowpeas, when I asked the owner about it she told me that I had ordered large which was two portions of the small, to be honest I would not have even paid $12 for it, my friend got an entire fish, rice and fruit for $4 more $28.<br/><br/>I explained to her how shocked and disappointed I was - she was rather smug about it and said if I had asked when I ordered I would have realised. <br/><br/>I definitely wont be going back, nor will I be booking my boss in for his 'work' meeting lunches there either or recommending this place to anyone.<br/><br/>So disappointed and would not recommend this at all - a real let down. I realise veggies can expensive but $24 dollars is ridiculous !<br/><br/>Not usually one to complain so this speaks volumes about how shocked I am ! <br/><br/>Ridiculously over priced.

Expensive, nothing in plate, no one there and smells. Avoid avoid svoid

Exceptional food. My husband and I visit this restaurant nearly every week, Yoshiya delivers nothing less then exceptional food ever time we visit. I am a extremely fussy eater yet I can never fault the quality of food, this is a restaurant you must visit!

Love this place!. The pine wood furnishings from the late 80's may look a bit dated but do not let this put you off. The food here is fantastic. Have been several times and never disappointed. Try the BBQ scallops, mixed sashimi and fillet steak dishes which are among my favorites. Also every time I have ordered a light beer, which is the only alcoholic beverage on the menu, I have been brought an Asahi extra dry (king of Japanese beers) at no extra cost. The waitresses are all attentive and polite and the prices are reasonable considering the quality of the food. Highly recommended!

Simply the best (Japanese). My partner and I have been frequenting Yoshiya for a while now, he introduced me to it 1 year ago. After always enjoying the generous lunch specials, we had our first dinner outing this week ...<br/><br/>oh my ... amazing! <br/><br/>We sat at the bar, overlooking the chefs as they created their own kind of masterpieces. We started with the beef slices, slightly seared, with ginger, parsnip and garlic - followed by 4 beautifully seared scallops as our entree. <br/><br/>This was followed by 2 perfectly constructed sushi cones, filled with fresh slices of salmon and wasabi. A littly crunchy, a little squishy and massively flavoursome! <br/><br/>Our mains consisted of mixed seafood from the grill with fresh brocolli, beans, snow peas and mushrooms - all in a basic yet yummy oyster sauce. <br/><br/>The best part though? Although we were struggling a little, my partner insisted we have the lobster tempura - oh my god - amazing!! A far pricier dish - but given it was a special night for us, it was truly worth it - light tempura, lobster cooked perfectly - full of flavour and consistency - and all presented as you'd expect ... in the empty shell of your lobster :) <br/><br/>Try it, it's great ...

Trad style. My partner and I love Japanese cuisine, and prefer a traditional style to the modern or fusion style. So it was with little surprise that we loved Yoshiya. <br/>Miso was excellent. Sushi was superfresh and classical in preparation. We also shared the large tempura mix platter and a large sashimi mix platter.<br/>The tempura was evenly coloured, and fried with excellence- simple and clean presentation and precise tender-crisp bite. As is always the way, paper is placed under the tempura to demonstrate how little oil was absorbed. The remnants were hardly noticeable! <br/>Sashimi is my weakness, so I am always on the look out for my next favourite offering. Yoshiya is presented classically, with elegance and honesty. The fish is fresh, the salad is non-invasive, and the dipping sauce is unashamedly authentic.<br/>We also tried the teriyaki chicken- large serve, with classic salad and white rice. Great flavours, will definitely be back again and again.<br/>Oh, and their house sake (which we asked to be served warm) was very pleasing.<br/>Go to Yoshiya, and remind yourself how flavoursome the classic Japanese dishes really are.

Judging by these other reviews, it's a shame that I didn't stay long enough to actually taste the food! I walked in, and the lady at the counter was so rude that I just walked out. I wanted to buy some sushi for lunch during my break, and didn't have any cash. You have to spend over $18 on sushi if you want to pay by eftpos.<br/>This would have been ok, but as a worker in hospitality myself, I just couldn't believe her attitude towards a customer. So rude. Never going back.

A great little Japanese. Yoshiya Japanese is a great little Japanese doing mainly Teppanyaki style food. The food is excellent and only the best produce is used. The soft shell crab entree and steak teppanyaki were standouts. I would highly recommend this place if you like your food fresh and clean like only the Japanese can do. Decor is not from home beautiful, but hey the food is what you come for and it is also BYO which is refreshing.

If great tasting, fast food is all your after then I definitely recommend Yoshiya, reasonable pricing with BYO wine.<br/>Just don't expect all the little things to come with it, waitresses speak very little if any English, mixed with a small in below average atmosphere there is defiantly room for improvement. But at da end of da day it is all about the food in I will be going back.

My wife and I come here at least once a month and it is our all time favourite restaurant. The food is mouth watering. The quality and flavours are exceptional. Service is 10/10.<br/>We bring our young kids and they love it

Yoshiya Japanese Restaurant. This Restaurant, in my opinion and that of my wife (who I introduced to Japanese Food) is the best Japanese Restaurant in the Perth Metropolitan area and yes we have tried them all including Nobu at the Burswood! If you are a true Japanese food fan you need to eat here!! We come here regularly to celebrate life and specially on our birthdays! We never miss! Come try it and ask for Mike and Lisa!! What more can I say? We have both been going to the Yoshiya for more than 30 years now (even back when it was the Hayashi) and find it most acceptable. We should all conscientiously support good restauranteurs ... specially Japanese ones. We love Cherie and Francis and the two Lads! Come see and enjoy the great food. You can decide for yourself about the price. We keep going back and we are by no means wealthy - just discerning.
Devil's Advocate
I attended this restaurant with a group of about 9 friends. The total ended up costing us about $50 each.<br/><br/>Usually, I'd be ok with paying that much for a decent dinner but at about $12 per serve with each serve having 2 pieces, I thought this was largely excessive.<br/><br/>The mains were the same with the cost being about (on average) $30 each with very small portions. The food was not jaw droppingly amazing and I don't believe that it warranted the overinflated prices. The portions of the mains were about the size of an entree - just on a larger plate.<br/><br/>I have a suspicion that there may have been extra items added to our table bill but we weren't able to actually read anything on the hand written bill.<br/><br/>Definitely will not be attending this place again.

Went there for lunch and ordered the Grilled Snapper Tepinyaki. Tasted great, but a little over priced for the portion size. The owner needs to work on her people skills, but the experience was good overall. Will go back next week!
Julie.severin
Way too expensive for what I had. I ordered california maki sushi, ebi tempura maki sushi and tsukemono. The ebi tempura was ok, but for 10$ I expected more than 6 small pieces. Regarding california maki sushi they were full of mayonnaise and I barely felt the crab. It was like they were running out of crab. I was also amazed by the price of miso soup... 5 dollars for a small bowl... I was disappointed and I don't think I will go back.

A hidden gem! Was not sure what to expect when we arrived, it's a bit out of the way and hidden next to a hairdressers. Was amazed at how great the food was and seems lots of others are already a fan of this place!<br/><br/>Friendly and fast service with delicious food at great prices! And it's BYO!!

Always fantastic. We have been coming to Yoshiya for over 24 years and the food and service is always amazing .. thank you for being so consistent ..

Went with another couple to Yoshia our favorite healthy Japanese restaurant we keep coming back because of the honesty in the food, regarding tradition, freshness and consistency, the menu doesn't change but it doesn't need too we the regulars would be dissapointed, if we couldn't order our favorites, you should give it a go, the restaurant can seem somewhat sterile, but we are there for the food.

My family have been going to this restaurant for over 15 years now and the quality if food is still impeccable! The best Japanese there is in WA that's for sure! The quality of food is really great. Only thing is.., maybe time to upgrade those old pine furniture. But nice touch with the wait staff wearing nice Japanese clothing. My favorite there would have to be the salmon sashimi, the chicken sushi but I ask them to substitute cucumber with avocado - yum! , and the chicken teriyaki. Haven't been in a month so time to go back and get my fix :)
Candi The Cacker
Delicious and understated.. We have dined at Yoshiya at least 10 times over the past 12 months, and keep going back. The food is always superbly fresh and of impeccable quality. Cooked items are always prepared perfectly, and the service is always respectful and prompt. Yes it is on the higher side of what you might pay for Japanese food, but you always get absolutly pristine dishes. There is not a thing on this menu that is not perfect. Niku tataki is a stand out.
Hippokathy88
Over-priced!. Not my favourite jap place, they dont have a lot of typical jap dishes like takoyaki, okonomiyaki, curry or udon! the food was seriously over-priced and it didnt taste all that great either. the only thing we were happy about was the mix tempura, but it was wayyy too expensive for what we received!

Long-term Lover. This is the restaurant that first made me fall in love with food, back when I was about 8 years old. I've since celebrated countless birthdays and special occasions here for over 20 years and I've never had a bad experience. <br/>The freshness of the food is outstanding and no other Japanese restaurant in perth has ever come close. <br/>The eel is particularly good, I've never enjoyed it anywhere else but here! And even for the unadventurous, the classic old chicken teriyaki is given new life here - thick and sticky, crispy skinned. Be warned, once you try chicken teriyaki here, you'll never feel as satisfied with it anywhere else...
Vikin
Strict $15 minimum charge per person - we had table of 10 with 9 ordering full meals and only one not hungry and still got scolded, "that's your problem" - never going back
Mazzafin
Family Favourite. We have been visiting this restaurant for twenty-five years and have never tired of it. We now have three generations of our family and many of our friends, who have enjoyed the freshest shashimi, light tempura, teppanyaki that is so good you can't visit Yoshiya without ordering, the best flounder and many other delights that entice us back time after time. The furniture and aesthetics could do with an update, but we go there for the food - a firm favourite.
Taste Sensations
Great Food. The food at Yoshiya has been fabulous for the 25 years that i have been going there. Always fresh and the quality of the produce is excellent. Always great.
Js0n1
Overpriced, stingy portions. For the price I paid... I expected much more food on the plate. I got a sashimi platter and at the price I paid I would of got double the portion at Jaws. Also, the owner isn't actually Japanese and is using the "authentic" and classy gimmick to charge more.
Shorty
Over Rated. From the get go service was really rushed when not even half the restaurant was full. My partner and I ordered a Soft Shell Crab for entrees ($17), a main of the Dinner set for 1 ($50) and for myself a seafood Teppanyaki ($35). <br/><br/>Normally i'm not fussed when food comes out, but when my main came out before the entree and my partner's main meal, it was quite sad to not be able to eat at the same time. <br/><br/>That aside, besides the Niku Beef, included in the Set Dinner, the rest of the meal tasted very average. To top it all off they forgot one tea and a miso.<br/><br/>It must of been a bad night but the moment the owner tried to kill a bug with her hands near the resgister, in view of everyone, I decided it was best not to have dessert.<br/><br/>Please consider Jun for a far superior experience.

Fresh real Japanese food & staff. Good prices, openly prepared sensational food, sweet wait staff not intrusive at all. Recommended for sure!

Unpretentious, great local place. open for over 20 years and I can see why. great sashimi, tempura, and beef dishes, lobster, oysters and other seafood is also a must. teriyaki chicken is best in Perth
Blonde
Loved it. Great tempura veggies lovely food all round I go there heaps
Andremu
Fabulous! Sashimi was sheer perfection. Awesome steak, miso, teppan yaki, tempura. What a feast!

The best sushi & Japanese in Perth! Love it!
Kieranb
The best teriyaki I've ever had! The yaki niku is great also. Been around for years, and it's not hard to see why!

I really shouldn't because it is hard enough to get a table already, but I do highly recommend Yoshiya Japenese Restaurant, the food is the most exciting and delicious you will get anywhere and Francis and Sherry Lim, are the most wonderful hosts, they can never do enough for you to ensure you have a wonderful meal and evening.

WOW. I have just found my new favourite Japanese restaurant.

Established in 1987, Yoshiya Japanese is still going strong. With the food served in today’s lunch, I can see why it’s still going. I really loved the moist succulent snapper with a lovely garlic flavour. It was very tender but just firm enough to hold together. Along with the fish sauce which brought out the flavour of the snapper; salad, rice, miso soup, and refreshing slices of orange to finish off, this made for a complete meal. The Japanese tea has a light tea flavour and goes down smoothly. You can feel it aiding digestion with each sip. I also loved the green tea ice cream. The ice cream was smooth and had a lovely green tea flavour with enough intensity. However, the touch of syrup and red bean to the dessert proved a masterstroke in drawing out and highlighting the green tea flavour. The syrup wasn’t too much nor too sweet and didn’t take over the star of the dish, the green tea flavour. Really enjoyed my lunch and can’t wait to visit again.

Posted by Tina on Thursday, February 4, 2010 · Leave a Comment   When a Japanese restaurant has been around since 1987, in the heart of the city, there must be something good about it. The tiny, japanese restaurant, Yoshiya , is located next to the CPP Pier street carpark in the city, and it’s so tiny, that if you blink you’ll miss it...The ambience is very casual, but the price of the dishes aren’t exactly inexpensive. They are a little pricey compared to other Japanese places in Perth, and the serving size isn’t large, but having said that, it’s still very filling.
