Review Main Street Ryu Japanese Food X Liquor - Perth

Came here with a bunch of people and kids as well, staff was very friendly and patient with us. When we dropped cutlery on the floor, she came up with new ones straight away without us asking for replacement. Food is great, good seasonings, fast delivery with good temperature. Presentation was pleasant, price is reasonable for good portion. Would love to come back another time.

Booked a table last minute. Had no idea so fancy and beautiful this place is. Everything tasted delicious but the Black Cod fish is something from other world. Environment was friendly and relaxed. Definitely will recommend and will go back for more.

The sashimi is average nothing special compared to the other Japanese restaurants, the grilled eel rice called Unadon is well cooked and delicious the sauce make it perfect. The restaurant is busy after 12:30 the staff were attentive.

Very good Japanese food in CBD. I had generous amount of fish. They are also fresh. Agedashi tofu and the seafood poke are my favourite. Very recommended

The restaurant decor is quite pleasant and modern. The food were presentable and nice. Pricing is in the mid range. The waitresses were friendly and served us with a smile.

Simply Wonderful. Just having a simple lunch with the family. I've ordered 3 simple complete meals. Totally enjoying them... The taste were simply wonderful. A return is a must, to try other dishes. The restaurant is a bit small if you have a huge crowd. The staffs were friendly and very welcoming. I think prices are reasonable. I am just hoping that free teas were available. Many thanks.

Tried the lunch menu today, quality & taste was good. Service was friendly & swift. Nice & simple decor. Price on the higher end for what you get.

Edosei is a great Japanese restaurant with something for everyone. Even if sushi or seafood isn’t your thing there is something for you. The ambiance is just divine. It’s a perfect mix of comforting and friendly.
OldMate
This joint is faultless. The Asahi. The pork belly. The sake.

When you enter most Japanese restaurants all the staff welcome you. I went here with my son, and there was not one at the front reception so we started walking into the place, the waitress held up her hand and gave us a look, one that was uninviting, and then gave us a firm stop hand sign as if we were trespassing, we turnaround and walked out.
Carmen
Love their Finger Lickin' Chicken and scallop roll. Pork belly was really good too. Nice atmosphere and service was great. Would come back.

Fusion works. When one gets it right. Instead. Main Street Ryu is a confused plethora of Japanese, Hawaiian and Chinese.

Agadashi tofu. Meant to be light was heavy on the batter (perhaps it was left out too long). The batter itself unusually greasy and dense.

Scallop roll was ok. But the balance and temperature was off. Cold scallop lightly seared with a soy teriyaki dressing. With nori that was rather chewy and again, cold mayo crab-like meat filling. Take the scallop off and it’d have been a simple variation of a crab roll.

Salmon taco. A Melbourne institution does this right. Yet, the diced sashimi is mixed in with an unusually lemon dressing that isn’t what one would expect. And the Poke bowl? A huge bowl of rice soaked in teriyaki at the bottom.

My dining partner described the meal as “amateur”. As if someone was trying to prepare creative sushi but didn’t exactly know how. Flavours somehow clashing and none of the dishes executed perfectly.

Service was also a little understaffed with two working the floor. Though were pleasant.

Time to leave now my dining partner says. I agreed.

Staff are super nice and super attentive. Down to a glass of water refill. Menu has lots of options but we went with chefs choice and it did not disappoint. Some choices were outside the box of what I would normally eat and servings were very generous. Wishing for a chocolate desert would have made my night. Worth a visit and so much choice on this menu it won’t be a one off visit. Make sure you book though

This place does the best gyu-don (beef rice bowl) in town. Very apt, considering that it once was "Mr Samurai" premises. Melt in the mouth, thin sliced beef.

Had the Volcano ramen and it was very good. Not overall spicy but it was delicious fresh and decent size. Love the use of seafood in it. Good service as well.

Not the place for authentic Japanese food but I think they make that obvious when looking at the menu.
It's more of a fusion type food.
We had the Beef Tataki. Was a tad vinegary and not too pleasant. The Pork was ok. The Salmon belly was unusual but I'm being pedantic in saying that smaller servings would make better share food. We also agreed that the quality of produce didn't quite taste right. Maybe it was just because it was a Monday. We may try it again though. Must also say that it's not cheap. There is more value for money at other authentic places.

Cant stop coming back for their Volcano Ramen 🌋 🍜 😎

They have different level of 🌶🌶 make sure to try 🌶x10 🤣🤣🤣

The lovely burgers were not only cute and attractive but it was also very delicious💖

Expensive but delicious and beautifully designed! Located in the heart of CBD, main street RYU offers unique take at Japanese food! Their food are colourful and instagram worthy! I love their sushi taco, wait what! Yes, sushi taco - sushi rice, soft shell crab, herbs and sauce on taco shell! They are amazing!! The only downside is the price - it’s hard to justify the small portion, even though the food is amazing indeed. Will I come back again? Probably..

Tried the red back spider taco at the twilight markets in the city. Absolutely delicious. The rest of the nibbles they had on offer looked interesting too. Would like to visit their restaurant someday.

came early on a friday evening for dinner. there weren’t diners yet when we arrived, but by the time we left about an hour or so later, 6 other tables had come in and another 3-4 tables were reserved.

we had all 4 of the nori tacos, and we liked all of them except the soft shell crab one, as the sauce that accompanied it was a bit weird and quite sour. all the taco shells were crispy and all the fillings (salmon, tempura mushrooms, beef) were tasty and very different from each other. we also had the tokyo fish and chips, that came with 6 pieces of fish and 6 slices of the sweet potato chips. they were cooked well and served hot and fresh. the sauce that accompanied this dish was also very odd, and we ended up asking for normal mayonnaise instead.

service from the 2 ladies were lovely.

we’d come back, but only for the tacos, which although are very expensive, were also very good and well worth the money.

Not going to come again. Quite disappointed, the can’t even cook rice properly, not Japanese style at all. The price is also expensive. Waitress is friendly.

Love the food at this one! The black cod miso is definitely a favourite, along with their fresh salmon sashimi tacos. Amazing Japanese cuisine!
Sophie
Superb...the 'volcano ramen' is so delicious - one of the best seafood ramen I've had with a flavourful, spicy broth. Be prepared, the 'normal' spice level is hot! But amazing.

I’ve always been happy with food and drink at Main Street Ryu, previously Zen Saki. I have a slight addiction to the curry katsu chicken dish which is always filling and full of flavour. Great service with great atmosphere makes for a great lunch.

Everything was good! The pork belly was definitely the winner here though. The soft shell crab taco and kingfish was also nice.
Decor was great, place was easy to find, and average service. Although a little pricey.

It was a good experience overall.
Love the freshly made Tacos 👍 ate it with sake 👍 in a cozy and friendly hemisphere 👍

Will be come again next time & recommended to any of my business friend 👌

A bit too pricey for my liking. The food is japanese tapas style. Don't get me wrong, the food are delicious and authentic. Everything we ordered was very tasty. The drinks were great as well. But the price is quite hefty for the portion we get. I wouldnt come here if I wanted to leave feeling full. The staff however are really great. The decor is also lovely and trendy.

Lovely restaurant located conveniently along Barrack Street! The karaage bento was so filling, the chicken was really tender, juicy and flavoursome. And their portion is so generous. Very good value for the amount of food you get. Service was prompt, ambience was on point, couldnt ask for more.

Main Street Ryu replaced Zensaki on Barrack St sometime last year and I'm sooo glad Perth finally has a modern Japanese place to call our own 📣🎊! But first, let's taco 'bout #noritaco! Shaped like tacos 🌮, nori sheets are coated with a thin batter, deep-fried then filled with rice and some spec-taco-lar toppings.

My favourite is salmon belly tartare 🐟😍, with fresh cubes of salmon melt away in your mouth, creamy guacamole adds some fattiness and yuzu dressing brightens the flavours right up. Gyudon 🐮 comes second as tender braised beef brisket glazed over with sticky teriyaki sauce and topped with Kewpie mayo creates an incredible umami experience. Red Back 🦀 follows closely behind with crunchy soft shell crab tempura deep-fried till golden, marrying kimchi mayo perfectly. Mushroom 🍄 is surprisingly my least favourite as I find the batter too heavy. I can barely taste any mushroom, just flour and oil unfortunately. These nori tacos make the best snacks and you just can't stop at juan. And if you're into fitness, consider fitting a whole taco in your mouth.
While pork gyoza had thin skin, crunchy bottoms yet juicy filling, the crispiness of pork belly's crackling was next level 🐷🌶! Miso was prominent in the sauce but it needed a lot more chilli to be chilli miso caramel. It actually tasted a lot like Korean gochujang but the sweetness from caramel was what set it apart. We loved the pickled kale as it really lifted the pork's fattiness.

We also adored the scallop roll 🍥🦀! Lightly blow-torched scallops with teriyaki glaze, combined with creamy avocado, mayo and crab meat were the highlights of our night. The pieces were small enough to eat in one bite but substantial enough to justify the price tag. All the components melded well together and presented beautifully on the plate.

Braised LA beef short ribs 🐮🍖 were super soft and tender. It initially smelled and tasted a bit winey but the funkiness was actually due to the fermented characteristic of ganjang sauce. I personally wasn't a fan of the saltiness but I suspect it would taste better with some rice.

Everything we ordered had such unique characters as @MainStreetRyu.Perth didn't shy away from strong flavours. They managed to showcase #modernJapanese in a casual yet superior manner 🏮. With most items being under $20, you can expect to walk away on a full stomach without emptying your wallet.

Popular ramen joints with luscious pork-base soups or lighter chicken-base siblings should feel very threatened by the existence of this seafood-base cousin right now 🌊. Main Street Ryu has taken Perth by storm with their innovative twists on traditional Japanese food and this seafood ramen is no exception. The Volcano Ramen 🌋🍜🌶 had an incredibly thick soup, packed full of chilli and umami-filled seafood flavours. For the chilli novice, worry not as the spiciness wasn't over-the-top and there was a subtle smokey undertone that complimented the broth beautifully. Each item of seafood was fresh and well-cooked, suggesting that they were cooked separately at different times ⏳, with care. We struck gold with the amount of seafood present, loads of plump mussels, crunchy soft-shell crabs, bitey squid, firm fish and 3 big fat juicy prawns 🐚🦀🦑🐟🦐. Noodles were al dente and even though it took us a bit of time to finish everything, they did not go soggy.

Who needs men when you have ramen this good? 🍜

Had a lunch time ramen with the wife, the volcano seafood ramen was super spicy and loaded with seafood. Counted 7 mussels albeit on the small side, but flavours were good.

Great staff, super delicious food, needed a spoon to finish all the sauce. A little bit pricey, but makes for a great night out. Can’t wait for them to make their way to Melbourne.

Absolutely in love with the food at this Japanese fusion restaurant. We have been here multiple times and it has never disappointed.

Throwback to another great dinner session @mainstreetryu.perth
Sashimi combo (24pieces); Gobo chips- julienned burdock roots with mayo; Kingfish Carpaccio- south australian kingfish, yuzu dressing, red-black tobikko, red radish, chives and micro lemon balm; Agedashi tofu & eggplant- momen tofu, eggplant, beanshoot and ginger soy; Unagi shitake arancini- shitake mushroom risotto, diced unagi, mozzarella, creamy mayo and parsley powder; Buta Kakuni- slow roasted crispy skin berkshire pork belly, chilli miso caramel and pickled kale; Volcano Ramen with an assortment of soft shell crab, mussel, seafood and vegetables in a spicy broth (we got extra spicy!); and Pork gyoza- pan fried pork dumplings with soy dipping sauce. We also had some dessert! We ordered the green tea tiramisu, yuzu pannacotta and the black sesame brûlée.

Absolutely love their shroom taco! Love how creative they are, making the taco shell out of nori. Their buta kakuni is also delicious! The volcano ramen was my favourite. We asked for extra spicy and they delivered! Lots of seafood and a great dish to share if you don’t want to have a whole bowl to yourself. Definitely will be back for more!

I have visited here a few times and I love their taco with enoki mushrooms. The salmon chin teriyaki is also very tasty and the price is reasonable.

Came to this place expecting a ramen joint but was blown away by the quality of the food, the presentation , and the Japanese whisky selection. Beautifully done. Hope you guys succeed!

Food is good and decent, but it wasn't impressive. The tacos are definitely one of a kind; they use crispy nori seaweed as its shells. However, the fillings were quite minimal and we were expecting a bit more, especially when they cost $9-$11/taco.
The Adegashi Tofu- lovely presentation with nicely fried tofu & eggplant. But the ginger soy sauce wasn't the most enjoyable sauce to go with it as it was a little too thick and overpowering.
Volcano Ramen- was one of my favourites when this place used to be called 'Zensaki'. However, this time round, our noodles were overcooked, salty and the seafood didn't tasted all fresh.
The most enjoyable dish of the night was the Dragon sushi roll.
Modern & cool setting. Warm & friendly service.

I had so been looking forward to trying here as the reviews have been great and the food looked fabulous. But all we can say is BAD. Food and service. The wait staff seemed all over the place on a rather quiet evening. We were never offered water for the table and had to ask for it at the end of our meal. We also had to ask where the ramen was as all other meals had been served. The waitress informed me it takes longer to prepare. This is a point that should be advised when ordering. The agadashi tofu and eggplant was the most tasteless dish I have ever eaten. There was not a single grain of seasoning on the entire plate. The parsnip chips were so uninspiring. Then there was the Volcano Ramen. First bite of the softshell crab and I knew i would never be coming back. I was the fishiest tasting thing i have ever had. My friend even commented on the smell and how unpleasant it was. I politely declined to eat it and placed it in the bowl i was provided for the shells. And that's my next point. When dining out i expect the prawns to be shelled and if not, then provide a bowl with warm water and lemon to wash your hands. I wasn't. The noodles were actually nice. A generous serve and lovely texture. The broth was also pleasant. But on leaving the restaurant both myself and my dining companion were left with the most horrible stale oil taste in our mouths and couldn't wait to get home and brush our teeth.

Delicious food and great presentation. a little bit on the pricy side but will definitely be back. We had the soft shell crab, the tacos and karaage sliders. The tacos were amazing!
More Than Nourishment
It was a busy Saturday night but despite this, the service was efficient. Our hungry eyes were bigger than our stomach. All the dishes were nice with the pork belly (the crispy skin was oh so crispy with a decent crunch) and tacos as the highlights. Minor criticisms was the arancini did not have a lot of unagi or mushroom flavour to it and it was slightly in the expensive side ($107 for two including a beer.. luckily we had the entertainment book with 25% off).

Came here on a saturday night for dinner. Ordered the small sashimi set to start. The fish was cut into the perfect thickness for you to enjoy. Also tried the pork belly dish, soft shell crab nori taco, the aburi and nigiri combo, street corn dog and matcha tiramisu to finish. Would recommend all dishes to try. They are all quite unique in their own way and very tasty/satisfying. I will definitely be back to sample some of the other dishes! Very friendly staff and service

This restaurant used to be called Zenzaki, but they have changed their name to the Main Street Ryu Street food Perth. Maybe they are under new management. They had revamped the interior of the restaurant, it's all new and modern. I like the neon lucky cat decoration.
I've been waiting for them to reopen for a while.
The menu had changed, but they still have my favourite dish, Volcano Ramen.
Volcano Ramen is the seafood ramen, it consists of mussels, soft shell crab, prawns and fish. The only thing for improvement is that they should peel the prawns shell so it's easier to have. If not it will be a mess to eat it.
I will return to try their other food, as it's right in the heart of the city.

Amazing experience! One a the very few authentic/modern Japanese restaurants in Perth. Very cool, amazing service and incredible food! A variety for everyone, they were able to make our meals gluten free and vegan, which was amazing!!
Best Japanese I've ever had in Perth, best restaurant I've ever been to in Perth. Incredible experience that I would highly recommend!

Good quality Japanese dining. I loved the friendly atmosphere and that they cater to kids. Kids cutlery are provided. I had the beef tenderloin bento $15. Great beef!

Decent quality Japanese in a great restuarant. Had lunch here and was suitably impressed. Great fitout and great service. Gyoza and Taco were great, Gyu Don and Curry Don were also good. Recommended.
