very cool place, nicely decorated. menu is quite varied with plenty of familiar dishes plus some western style (xinjiang) options and spins on popular chinese dishes. the lunch specials are very good value and the rest of the menu is quite reasonably priced. we had xiao long bao, fried squid, xinjiang noodles, 'peking duck' pock hock and dan dan mian. interesting to try, but pork was pretty salty and dan dan mian quite a unique style.
The weather finally seems to be changing so I took the opportunity to go for a lovely relaxing walk under blue skies to Northbridge and stop by Shanghai Tea Garden. I walked in and was immediately met by the inquisitive eyes of the patrons probably wondering what a foreigner is doing in their restaurant. I grabbed a menu which caters to a larger group with an array of dishes, or you can grab lunch time items for a few people. Takeaway is also offered. I chose the pork cabbage dumplings and the dry slightly spicy Shanghai daan noodles. I took a table outside.
The dumplings are quite slippery, the skin is pretty thin and reasonably silky, the filling of pork and cabbage delicious. Dip a dumpling into the soy sauce mixture and devour. Dumplings carry a subtle flavour with the soy sauce adding just a touch of seasoning and is a great way to start the meal. With a serving of 15 dumplings there’s no skimping here.
The Shanghai Daan Noodles is a little thick and slightly heavy but tasty. It comes served with a minced pork mixture with a slight spiciness, crushed peanuts, and is almost a spaghetti Bolognese of sorts. The mixture is enough to lightly flavour the noodles turning it into a very enjoyable dish and something quite unique. I had to ask for this to be packed away.
I also couldn’t resist one of my favourite dishes, red bean pancake. A lovely golden brown deep fried pancake batter encasing soft delicious red bean mix. So yum, totally satisfied but really full. Good thing I’ve got a long walk back.
I love the decor! The dumplings are also great, and other dishes never disappoint. There's a good bar next door - make an evening of it this end if town.
We had a great meal at Shanghai Tea Garden, I have always wanted to pay them a visit and it did not disappoint. There were 8 of us and we ordered a range of food.
The stand out dish for us was the Special Lamb Ribs, Shanghai Dumplings & the String Beans with minced pork and chilli. The Dumpling fillings were full of flavour especially the broth in it, it was so tasty that we all fight for the last piece. Lamb ribs receive a lot of rave reviews on our table, the meat was on point so were the spices they used. I have had a fair share of stir fry string beans with minced pork and chilli, their version here has a lot more depth of flavour. The eggplant & minced pork clay pot was very popular on our table too. It was grandma first time having eggplant and she likes it.
Average dish of the night was the pork belly in bamboo box, the sauce that the pork was coated in lacking some depth of flavour in compare to the rest of our dishes.
We would definitely return to try some other dishes as we were eyeing off other people's food throughout the night.
Very efficient service
I recommend the seafood spring rolls as a good starter.
Quite affordable place, with charming Chinese decor.
Food was very well prepared, and full of flavour.
The Xin Jiang Spicy Chicken with Potato and Hand Made Noodles is a must try. The other dishes are quite good too. It was impressive to have a decent Hot and Sour Soup for once. Prices are quite reasonable. Would definitely go back.
The only down side is that the owners, should install a light down the walk way to the toilet. Can be quite hazardous especially at night.
This little restaurant in Northbridge has an inviting Oriental entrance. You step through an ornate red door into a courtyard before going into the restaurant. It’s a pity they don’t make the courtyard more inviting as it has the potential to be a really cool little spot for al fresco dining. A tall aquarium greets you smack in the eye as you walk into the restaurant.
This place is located in william st, Northbridge. The entrance gate is traditional gate. It brings us back to the old Shanghai. And inside has a nice decor too.
Food- we had Shanghai dumpling- the dumplings' skin were thick, but the flavour of the pork mince and cabbage were nice..when you bite it the juice still in there
Szechuan "dan-dan" noodle dry..I love every bit in it..noodles were nice and chewy..love the combination sauce, cucumber and mince pork in it too.
Fried pork chop noodle soup- noodle nice and chewy. The clear soup was a bit bland for me
So after red teapot we went to Shanghai service was friendly and quick we ordered the fragrant duck, Shanghai dumplings and fried rice. The duck was drier than expected but very tasty especially with the salt they put on the side. Dumplings were very soft and floury.
Fast and friendly service, huge portion sizes, nice decor. BYO so bring a bottle. Two of us ordered 2 entrees, 1 main and steamed rice and we couldn't quite eat it all - great value as you don't need to order 2 mains cos' the serving sizes are so good. They also have some share bowl things which we saw 6 people sharing.
EXCELLENT. Excellent & quick services, friendly waitress, above average food, good value of money. Will be back soon!!
Dan Dan Noodles...YUM!!. Try the noodles and dumplings, they're both amazing. The place has a quite feel to it but the food is awesome. It's a regular for me and my family.
Very generous portions. At first I was a little taken back by the prices, until the food arrived. My friend and I each got a main dish (claypot seafood and Szechuan chicken) for us to share and steamed rice, and we had enough left over for 2 more full meals. We sat outside and it was very nice, I was worried that we might be forgotten since inside it was quite full but the service was great.
A little gem. A chinese friend steered us to this restaurant. Great food and friendly service, on the spicy side though! Try their specialty dish with chicken, noodles and potatoes, it's outstanding. Our family of 5 always eats well and cheaply here.
Great Cheap Chinese. My friends and I eat here often. Consistently great and cheap food. Highlights are the dumplings, satay sticks and the pork belly - absolutely melts in your mouth.
BYO is always a winner for me which they do and when you leave completely stuffed full of good food and only spent $25, you know you're onto a good thing. Highly recommended
Had a ok time here, was looking for a casual Sunday Chinese meal. Don't expect great service, they are too busy chatting to each other and on their phones.
In saying that, food was good.
Fantastic Hand Made Noodles. If you like fresh noodles you will not be disappointed.
Good food, average service. Like most Asian places they have a certain approach to customer service which is usually impersonal, efficient and brisk - certainly not rude. You should also note that unlike Western tradition of being served 3 courses brought together at right times, many Asian cuisines are brought out randomly. Service was patchy like they forgot to bring menus and we waited 20mins before getting drink we ordered first off. Not to worry.
Food was great - szechuan fish was amazing, the 'fragrant cripsy duck' was nice but the szechuan fish overpowered it so hard to taste the flavours of the duck. All up $50 for generous servings. I would recommend.
My first time having the home made noodles with spicy chicken - juicy tender chicken was delicious and slurping up the noodles was messy but pretty tasty. I loved the concept and can't wait to try other dishes on the menu!
We had two cudo vouchers so decided to use them, our food was a set menu of ginger chicken(pork belly at 2nd time), stir fried mix veges and xiaolongbao. All dishes were cooked perfectly and not too strong so that we could still enjoy the flavours of the ingredients.
This place has a nice atomosphoer but would be better with some background music. The chairs we sat had very tall back and look totally unique! Staff was friendly and prompt. We'll definitely go back even without vouchers.
Quality food and experiance.. You have to try this place we felt like we were in China! really traditional and delicious fresh food done in a way we have never seen before., price is okay..we loved it!
Refreshingly different. This is not your run-of-the-mill Northbridge chinese restaurant. The decor and the food are refreshingly different. Friday lunch was excellent - from the beautiful (and famous) dumplings onwards it was a taste sensation. The Dan Dan noodles were exceptionally good. Service was a touch on the slow side - there was only one waitress and the restaurant, though small, was fairly full. A second waitress would have solved the problem, but it wasn't enough to spoil the experience, we thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely return.
Fresh, Non Oily, Chinese. DELICIOUS. We walked in here by mistake on our way through Northbridge one night and they sat us down and we didn't want to be rude so we decided to stay. Little did we know, this place is a HIDDEN GEM! The food & experience was a 9/10. Really fresh dishes and non-oily. The Shanghai dumplings were excellent, the clay pot we had was 9/10. The staff were so lovely, super attentive and friendly- FINALLY somewhere in Perth with nice staff. We didn't have to wait for a thing. Up there if not better than Jade Court in terms of standard of food. But way less oily. We will return.
Friendly & Excellent food. We stumbled upon this restaurant through a Cudo voucher and were pleasantly surprised. The tea kept coming, the table cloth was ironed, the staff were friendly and courteous and of course, the food was delicious, simply excellent. We will return!
Great restaurant, delightful decor. Friendly owner makes you feel welcome when in, food good - especially Shanghai Dumplings / Xiao Long Bao!
Beautiful China. I was amazed! The food, what can I say.
If you are after the ambiance of real China; Some place to take you away from traditional Perth culture, then this will be the place - without a doubt.
It is actually open 6 days including Sunday, but closed Monday.
A lot of the reviews mention the Shanghai Dumplings and they are great. I would like to add a dish you just have to try "the Xin Jiang Spicy Chicken (on bone) with Hand Made Noodles" I had the medium size between two and it was awesome, with plenty to go around (serves two comfortably) and a flavour punch you will remember (Medium chilli was enough for us). The spring rolls were amazing too. I have to say, I was impressed by this restaurant. The staff were so pleasant, caring and cheerful. This restaurant could bring me back to Northbridge and that is saying something!
Great value for money!. Myself and my parter have been here twice in the last week.. Both times have been amazing! The Shanghai dumpings are a must! Chilli squid was so tasty and the service was great!
Service: 7/10 Food 8/10 Decor 7/10
The food and cost was OK - some teething problems with the service - we may have confused by asking for both in response to " would you like tea or water". Manageress made up by providing complimentary serve of chilli squid.
Yummy. Loved my shanghai dumplings, these are a must get if you come here. The housemade noodles with beef were also delicious
Decor is cooler than the food. Pros: Cool decor and pretty gardens outside. One of the better looking Chinese restaurants in Perth.
Friendly service
Fresh food
Cons: A tad expensive
Food wasn't as tasty and delish as other Chinese places I have been to, which was a little disappointing seeing as it was more pricey
Recommend: Going for lunch- menu looked cheaper and more interesting things to try like dumplings and butter pepper chicken rice sounded yum!
7/10
Good place to dine at. Recently we went to Shanghai Tea Garden for dinner and found there is a new chef who cooked wonderful foods. The dishes are worth to try. I like a lot. The lady boss is quite friendly and smiles all time.
We will go back with more our friends surely.
Funky decor, good food and service. HIdden gem.. What a generous plate of prawns!
I can' t believe how many times i must have walked past this place heading into Northbridge for dinner elsewhere. Shanghai Tea Gardens is FAR ABOVE any other Chinese in this price bracket. Tasty and generous food, funky decor - love the 'filmstrips' hanging from the ceiling - and service and cloth settings put STG up there with the best. We loved our meals and will be back to try more.
Enjoyable experience. Great ambiance, great food, affordable price, friendly lady boss to boot. :)
The soy sauce beef stir fry with fried dough (you tiao) is good. The 'you tiao' is a bit hard, but overall, very smooth and tender strips of beef, sauce is wonderfully flavored and the presence of the fried dough (you tiao) is a pretty interesting mix to the dish.
Spicy fried chicken. If you love very spicy food, this is a must have. Tender chunks of chicken (with bones, unfortunately) deep fried to perfection and seasoned with salt, dried chiili and Szechuan pepper.
The prawn, mushroom, Chinese sausage and cabbage is a good dish as well.
The lady boss was really friendly and even gave us two complimentary magazines to bring home. :)
Verdict: Will definitely be back again!
Shanghai Tea Garden - YOU HAVE TO GO HERE. Ok - so I am a bit of a fan of asian food. And I have visited many restaurants that provide this cuisine. But - this is one of the best (if not the best) I have visited.
The menu is quite extensive (especially if you are a pork fan) and states that it offers traditional Shanghai food.
It is a small and intimate restaurant. The decor and atmosphere is really nice, casual but elegant. The service was great (and I am fuss pot when it comes to service). They are also BYO (always a bonus).
BUT all of these factors were eclipsed by the amazing food!
We ordered a duck soup for entree - tasty, very subtle - but not wishy-washy. I have never had such tender duck.
For main we ordered the Shanghai Fired Rice, Crab and Tofu Claypot and Fragrant Chicken. All these were to die for.
Everything was fresh, light and had amazing flavour - but was not over seasoned. No over use of corn flour or thicker (if used at all) - glug free!
I cannot rave enough about the food.
My only complaint is that I think this restaurant has increased by expectations of food so greatly - that I can't imagine ever going back to my old asian haunts.
I am dreaming of my next visit and what I will try next.
Very enjoyable experience . The atmosphere is very inviting and the meals are good serves and very flavoursome .unique dishes would recommend to everyone .
Amazing. Shanghai Tea Garden was great, the food was superb and the service so friendly! will definitely be back :)
Brilliant. Had a great meal with great service
All the dishes were well cooked and quite different from what is usually served in Perth
Very charming owner and daughters
Could be a little darker at night to feel more intimate
will be back for sure
Beautiful Dumplings. The dumplings are gorgeous here! Had three main dishes which were all great(and when they say chillis they mean chilli) and everything was delicious. Nice surrounds...definately recommend.
Come here to be a little more adventurous. Most Westerners are used to 'Cantonese' cuisine. Shanghai cooking can be quite different. Have found several dishes on the dinner menu to be delicious & well cooked. You won't find dishes like this anywhere in Perth. Prices a little higher but you are paying for quality.
Great atmosphere, very reasonable lunch prices. Had the pork belly and egg with rice, vegetables and soup ($8.90), tea ($3.00) and for dessert a praline cake ($3.50). Most of the lunch items are around $10. The lunch selection is not huge, but you also have the option to order from the dinner menu.
Love the atmosphere of this place, it's pretty unique - classy but not too formal. The 6 foot chairs are a bit strange. Even though it was lunchtime it was very quiet.
My order came out extremely fast - in less than 4 minutes, which is a tad suspect. Pork belly was very tender, but the egg was tough. Veggies and rice were fine but the whole dish was just warm, even a bit cool. Soup was very plain tasting.
The cake was alright, from what I understand they sell Cafe Mozart cakes. A little dry but not too sweet.
Overall I was happy with the food for the price (except for the tea, it was good tea but $3 seemed a little pricey). Service was fine, staff were prompt and polite.
I'd be interested to try the dinner menu, although the price of dishes jumps to the $20 - $30 range. Would expect the quality to be a little better.
A family affair with twin daughters and Bruce front of house. Great food. BYO but no bottle shop close by so go prepared!
One of Perth's little hidden treasures. Food delicate yet flavorsome and service extremely attentive. Highly recommended!
Shanghai Tea Garden was unexpected & amazing
We had a really enjoyable meal there as we walked past & saw it on a Saturday night, they got us in & fed us some fantastic non traditional food ...Yummy
see pics at our facebook page Theory Dining Australia & Beyond
Not badly prioced either.... I'd go back in a heart beat
Great Chinese food with a fusion edge. A stylish setting with decor based on 1930s silver screen stills of Shanghai.
Had the best dumplings! Live the atmosphere, making you feel like you are in shanghai. Great place. A must try :)
Relaxed surrounding and delicious foods, and kindly chef as well. Lovely space sooooo much, I’ll be back regularly.
Most of food are really tasty. Price is reasonable as well.
