Fresh food , welcoming staff and excellent meals. I love it!!!! Ordered the steak and chips and it was done to perfection and the dessert was tasty and fresh.
Came across this place today and pleasantly surprised. Chicken bruchetta with plenty of roast vegetables and delicious tiramasu. Service excellent. Will be coming again.
Kalao. This was a restaurant chosen by my girlfriend for a Friday night meal, and her consistent good taste in restaurants, in my opinion didn't let her down. I like the simple concept of dishes based on different countries, which ranges from the safe to the slightly adventurous. My South African entree and Zimbabwean main were both interesting and tasty dishes, however my dining partner's steak was apparently a disappointment, cold, badly cooked, and cheap-tasting. As I get the feeling that this is the outlet for a cooking college, I commend the efforts of the staff, especially the two waiters who were thoroughly attentive and polite. You won't get astonishing, exciting food, but if you're after something nice with an international theme, it's certainly worth checking out.
Good value - HUGE serves. We ate at Kalao a few weeks ago on a Saturday night - we were one of 3 tables so it was quiet and service was efficient. The serves are enormous! We are big eaters and the entree and mains were too much. We had 'Spain' and the crab special for the entree, followed by "Austria" and "Mexico" for Mains.
Overall this is a nice place, great value but just not exciting. The food is like well presented pub food - don't get me wrong it is very enjoyable but the style and atmosphere of the place versus the food don't quite seem to match.
Great for a big, cheap feed but not the place to go for a romantic / celebratory dinner.
Hidden Gem!. This place is fantastic! Service is brilliant and efficient... food is cheap with large portions, and very yummy! It was my first time here and I will be back, and I will recommend this to everyone I know! THANKS!
Lovely flavours. We dined on Saturday night before going on to a live show, the menu great when you don't want to be tied down to one genre; the range was exotic, and my dish from Zimbabwe was unusual and pleasantly surprising. Great concept, great flavours, and best of all, the prices would allow us to eat there again with no qualms. Highly recommended.

We were all quite excited about going for a meal there as it has been highly rated on this site . We were not disappointed as although the restaurant was simply decorated , it was indeed an enjoyable experience . We liked the fact that there was a selection of dishes from around the world , dishes that we would normally have the opportunity to taste . We ordered all appetizers on the menu as well as mains since we were 6 of us . For the affordable price , with the 50% discount , we did not expect fine dining ! Food was tasty and unusual and I will not hesate to recomend friends who are looking for different food experiences .

Thank you for a great night!. We went here for my mum's birthday, and it was a great choice! the service was BRILLIANT. The staff were on the ball, and very polite! They made the dining experience.
Since there was 5 of us, we ordered one of each main (Spain - tapas, Malaysia - lamb skewers, Brazil - calamari, South Africa - a sort of meat pie with rice, and Madagascar - salad). We all shared around the entrees, and every single dish was tasty and different! My favourite was the calamari, sooo good! I don't eat meat, but my family said the South African dish was very very good.
For mains we ordered the Mexico (steak dish), India (fish), Austria (crumbed pork and chips), and Zimbabwe (soup). I had the fish and it was amazing, so delicious. My sister had the steak, which she highly rated. I tried one of the tortilla guacomole breads and oh my gosh SO YUMMY!
The serves were large and by the end of our meal we were all satisfied and enjoyed trying lots of different flavours and cuisines - nonetheless we had to try dessert and the Pannacotta was to die for! My boyfriend loved the Pecan Pie and my sister enjoyed the mint chocolate cake.
All in all a wonderful night, tasty food and great staff - winning!

What a great find. Delicious and affordable, well worth my searching efforts tonight! Recommend the calamari entree and the gold plate winning paella is a must! Also enjoyed the sweet little profiteroles filled with creme fraiche - a great ending to the meal. Do give it a go as it's quite good.
This is restaurant dining done just right: great food; good service; nice ambience; and, friendly and attentive staff. Our second time. We liked it enough to leave a generous tip (which is unusual for us)! Highly recommended.

My husband and I were having a few days r&r in northbridge. When we were waking around we were handed a flyer. Thought we would check it out. I have one word YUM! The staff were friendly and attentive. Apologizing for the delay in getting our meals. That night we went to the revolving restaurant and were totally disappointed. Three times the price and the quality and taste of the food was incomparable. I will recommend kalao to my friends and family and will definitely return. Never going back to the revolting restaurant again.

For entrees, we shared the Brazil (tender calamari) and Morocco (baked mince with custard and rice). We also ordered every main available (but for the vegetarian option) and they were all delicious! Standouts included the paella (which they modified for us) and fish (flavoursome and cooked just right).
Thanks to an offer for 50% off food, our dinner (+ drinks) came to less than $150 for 6. Kalao is a great addition to the usual restaurants in Northbridge!
Suprising and Delicious. I've walked past this place during the day before and always thought it was a standard 'Northbridge' dive. So wrong... I went here for lunch on a Thursday, and was pleased by the attentive service. The menu is interesting, and would have totally sucked if done badly, as it's very eclectic. I had no problems. The fish was absolutely amazing, poached in coconut milk served on coconut crumbed eggplant, and topped with chilli, radishes etc. So so good.My friend had the Zimbabwe Samp, which was really weird, but super delicious, flavours we'd never had all together before.
I'll definitely come back, as I want to taste the rest of the menu!!

Just got back from dinner at Kalao with the 50% off offer, and wow! The most outstanding aspect of our dinner was the service - we were greeted immediately and very warmly, and guided straight to our table where we were offered water options and menus. They delivered wine glasses right away, asked if it was ok to open the bottle and poured our glasses, which they attentively topped up all night (a privilege usually only received in the fanciest of restaurants in Perth!).
My partner and I had the Spanish entree and garlic bread to share, then the paella for 2. The entree was tapas style and all very tasty (especially loved the potato). Very generous size too - bigger than many of the mains you'll get in Perth! The paella was also very generous, and very delicious. If I was being very critical I would have liked to have seen a bit of crispiness on the bottom of the rice, and some more capsicum and seafood, but it was still a really yummy dish - massive mussels! We were both way too full for dessert, so just finished off our bottle of red (only $3 each for BYO).
The best bit was getting the bill - only $34!! But we both agree that even at full price it would have been a bargain.
I tend to feel that if this place twigged their branding a little - took the "world cuisine" off their name and changed their logo (say bye bye to the bird) - that there would be queues around the corner. It so hard to find a reasonably priced BYO restaurant with great good and fantastic service in Perth. But I do feel the current branding portrays a much lesser restaurant than what's actually on offer. Well done Kalao, we need more of you in town!!
Kalao in Northbridge, WA. This was a very good meal with great service. We would come back again. The "South African" entree was a treat. And the mains were very week priced and generous serves. The Garlic bread basket was better than most with 4 serves of bread and 2 rolls. Thank you Kalao!

The menu is interesting in that the dishes are all described by a country name – India, Madagascar etc. The food was delicious and my only observation was the portion size might have been a little small for a hungry man.
I could find only one red and one white wine sold by the glass. They were a Sauvignon Blanc and Cab Merlot, if I remember correctly.
All in all, a fantastic restaurant and thoroughly recommended.
My fiancée and I came for dinner on the 50% off night. I had the Spanish entree which was delightful. At this point I was almost full, the portion was so generous! And for main we choose the Paella, it was presented very well, but the mussels were dry and the risotto was still raw inside but still tasty. I still would return to try the other dishes. The service was great and very friendly.

Holy Kalao!. Stopped in here tonight for a meal with the gf after reading online that this place is actually run by students from a local college. Turns out this USED TO BE THE CASE but isn't any longer which would explain a hike in prices that some people have complained about on urban spoon.
FYI this place is situated right next to The Paramount Nightclub on James Street. We were greeted by a friendly girl out the front who asked if we would like to have a look at their menu. After informing her that we already had a booking we were promptly shown to our table inside.
The service was VERY attentive and professional. Smiles all round and no hassles with the menu, waiting on drinks/food or clearing the table after entrees.
We ended up having the Lamb Loin and Minced pork and Beef (Malaysian and South African) as entrees and then a Paella (Spanish OBVIOUSLY) for 2 as a mains.
Turns out the food portions are reasonably generous and we ended up full to the brim with half the Paella left over. We were allowed to take this home in a doggy bag. (Lunch tomorrow cool!).
For drinks we tried a few of their cocktails. The Espresso Martini was pretty decent. The Mojito was okay but seemed a bit watered down and the Caipiroska was pretty good also. We had a Limoncello each to finish the meal but would only recommend it to people with that certain taste (very strong flavour).
TIP: We came here on a 50% off special. This applies to FOOD ONLY. Not drinks as we had assumed. But an espresso martini for $8 is still good value!
Service was top class and the food was decent too. Our bill totaled at just over $70 for 4 cocktails, 2 entrees, 2 mains and a Limoncello each (2 people). Not bad.
I would recommend this as somewhere to try. There is also ample seating inside and outside and they can accommodate reasonably sized group around 8 or so people or maybe more.

Show your support!!. This place is run by TAFE students doing their hospitality course and I always like to support restaurant like this. I went there twice for their buffet brunch and both times I was happy with the experience. The food is not world-class, and some of them still need works but knowing that they were made by students, I must praise their effort. The dishes changed during my 2 visits but in general, there are hot dishes (e.g.sausages, bacon, baked potato, roast, chip or wedges etc), sweets (crossaint, cupcakes, muffins, tarts, apple crumbles), a separate station preparing all egg dishes (and you can specify what type of egg dish you like (eg. scramble, pouch etc) and they cook in front of you!! ), unlimited fruit juice (apple, orange and pear), and tea and coffee. My favourite out of my 2 visits would be the porridge and curry, and the dessert which looked like rocky road.
Because it was buffet style so I didnt expect much service, but our table was cleared quite quickly!
Value for money - totally!
Decor - very nice! It looks sooo classy you would not have guessed that it is a cooking school!!
Beautiful food, excelent service. Four of us went for dinner on saturday night with a voucher. It was the first time at Kalao but certainly not the last.
We choose three entrres to share (Austuralia, Korea, Greece). Each one of them was cooked to perfection. Presentation was impressive.
When it came to mains; Indian butter chicken , chinese duck, Morroccon lamb shank, French Jon dorry were as good and impresive as the entrees.
Portions were big. So just two of us ordered dessert : Japan (green tea tiramisu) and 'switzerland a chocolate perfection tart. The later was the favourite.
Service was very prompt and so friendly. Everybody who works there makes you feel special.

Simply wonderful - we came here on the last day of their Scoopon brunch offer, and despite the crowd the staff were all pleasant and professional. The food was all delicious but special mention must be made of the pastries - they were just amazing! I'll definitely be back.
Other restaurants, take note big time. We had vouchers and we were not let down at all, we being my husband, a 9 year old and two teenagers. You know how sometimes you think because you have a voucher you may get less etc, well if this is what we got, imagine if we didn't have them. The service was near to fine dining, the waiter placed our serviettes, repeated what our meals were when serving. The decor modern contemporary, table settings like fine dining, the menu is varied, great prices mains between $20 and $30 and plated like fine dining. The fish was decorated with thin slices of zucchini I think, I didn't have it, so that it looked like fish scales and the food was delicious. A real find, Kalao, please don't change, you'll have a full house every night at this rate. As I said above, if they can do, why can't other's in Perth!. A beautiful meal for my birthday. Will definitely be back.
Great food, good value for money!. A friend and I came here for dinner a few days ago and we were so impressed. The menu was interesting, well-priced and the serving was just right. The dish of the day was definitely the Japanese green tea-infused tiramisu. It was flavoursome and SO SO fresh. The service was attentive without being intruding and we were generally very happy. We had a Scoopon and would definitely return in the future without a Scoopon.

Sensational Attitude & Service. I took friends here last Saturday evening using two scoopon vouchers. The Manager and waitperson were absolutely wonderful. A highlight was that the manager had an amazing positive attitude to training her wait person who was from Maritius. We thoroughly enjoyed the cheerful interplay between them and ourselves using our poor French to add to the fun. Our friend is a chef and asked for her dish to be redone as it was overcooked. This request was received with absolutely no problem and an apology and the new dish was cooked to perfection. A small intimate restaurant - we were so delighted in the food, service, size and location in Northbridge. We will definitely be back with more friends and family. Possibly the best value restaurant in Perth at that standard.
Possibly the Best Value in Perth. 3 Course Meal for $20, perfectly adequate service and high quality food. Can't really go wrong. There's plenty of rubbish cafes around Perth charging more than that for an entree and treating customers as if they're doing you a favour by turning up for work. By comparison these guys are making an effort and doing a very good job at it. There's always going to be the occasional hiccup (it is a school after all), however the value you get out of it more than compensates for any shortcomings.
It's a great addition to NB and has spruced up a building that had remained derelict for a long time. I can't think of too many reasons to go anywhere else in Northbridge.
We ate there tonight using a scoopon voucher and buying 2 other set menus for our children who were with us. Fantastic food, service, ambiance and value. One time where scoopon has truly worked by introducing us to somewhere that we wouldn't normally eat and we will now definitely be returning customers. One of the nicest meals out that we have had in a long time.
Great food, great service. A great discovery. An example of how scoopons can actually work for a business. we went on a scoopon, not expecting much because it was a cheap deal. we chose salads and fish dishes each and tried one of their deserts.
