I went here on a date night and I must say I had a pretty memorable evening with my girlfriend. They arranged something special like I said and we had a lot of fun. Great food, great service.
Early morning in Perth and our hotel happened to be situated near one of the highest rated coffee places in town. Getting up early to try it out before we left to start our day's hard work, I was super excited for it. Situated down an alleyway near a residential complex, it had an almost Melbourne vibe to it. Arriving at entry time, we were of course the first ones there. Decor was unique, with mismatched tables and chairs amongst a rustic brick setting, unlike anything I've seen in the eastern states (or maybe I really just don't get out enough).
Friendly staff and relaxing. It’s great to have a spot you can perch for a read of the paper or meet a friend. It’s BYO food which is quite unique. Definitely worth stopping by.
Pony Express was a little hidden cafe when I was walking down Mayfair Lane. If it weren't for the signs I would've walked right past it.
I ordered a latte to go, which cost $4.50. The cafe was cozy with quite a lot of seats and has an eclectic fee. The coffee was quite good, though served a little bit too hot which is a pet peeve of mine. They also sell coffee beans at $36/kg which I might try next time!
Perth coffee is a hit and miss affair... and pricey!!! But this quirky little gem is a coffee hideout for those people who love a consistently good cup. The service is friendly, knowledgable and the baristas have a knack of meeting you once and remembering your order from then on. The tiny space is littered with prized collections of toys and tools - like someone dug up an old sandpit and put the treasures on display.
These guys have applied for a small bar licence... if they can do booze like they do coffee, all I can say is cheers!
Great coffees and I go so often till the owner recognise me! Every cup is well made! I love there latte, affogato and mocha. We sometime gets biscuit treats. Bring your own lunch there and enjoy a cup if coffee while you there! Cosy place.
Wanted to come here last time when I visited Perth, but it was already closed when I got here. This time it was open. It was the first time in a coffeeshop this visit, and the prices were a shocker. $4,50 for a coffee sounds insane, but I suppose it's similar prices in the whole of Perth so I can't blame Poly Express O for that. I got a soy chai (I know, it's not really a coffee). The flavour was okay and they made it from sticky chai leaves (by the looks of it). The milk was very hot, way to hot for me, I burned my tongue. But I know a lot of coffeeshops make their take-away coffees a bit hotter because people don't drink it straight away. Also I once heard that people in Perth like their coffee hotter than people in Melbourne. So I can forgive them for that. The milk froth wasn't great, very bubbly/lots of air. In fact, I had another coffee with someone at Bagels & Beans on Hay Street, and she told me she used to get cofee at Pony Express O, but when she moved from normal milk to soy milk she didn't like the way the soy milk was frothed at Pony Express O and therefore she is getting her coffee at Bagels & Beans now.
Service was friendly. Don't want to score too low because I had a take-away and not even a real coffee. Would definitely give them another chance with a 'real' coffee, sit down and have it in a cup, so I can judge better.
Good coffee and hot chocolate! Small venue but nice. Service is very good and quick compared to other coffee shops in the area. Would recommend.
Great coffee, fast service and friendly staff. A bit out of the way, as its on a back street, but worth the walk if you work or live in West Perth
Hidden gem, they make it strong, fun setting in an old horse stable down a lane way. Grab a little snack at Joes Bakery, sit at Pony and enjoy your brought food with their excellent coffee. Best in West Perth.
Mr Sprout led me down a narrow, dingy alley off Hay St. I was stunned by the sight of hairy, kangaroo plums gracing the wall and beneath them the quirky delight of Pony Express. My day was made. Make the effort if you live for good coffee, solid cups, retro atmosphere and a retreat from a modern world (except for the giant coffee machine that takes up quite a bit of space).
Pony is a shining diamond in the wastelands of the West Perth business district. I think it may be located in the actual stable where Jesus was born.
Best coffee I've found in Perth so far. A well-balanced one-size, two-shot, Italian-style coffee and great machines to back up the exotic coffee grounds used. Lovely, accommodating and welcoming owners. It's a lovely little tucked-away cafe.
Chilled vibes. Tried it out on a rainy day and it really surprised me. Like a hidden gem amongst rubbel. It's cutely tucked away next to an old apartment building, yet sharing no similar characteristics to it, this little coffee hub gives off a warm, homely feel and the friendly relaxed staff make the experience even better, and to top it all off - the coffee's awesome !!!
Truly fantastic coffee, and love that the guy that makes it every morning doesn't demand too much conversation or act too perky when I'm half asleep pre-caffeine! Service is always quick and it's nice that they use different beans each week for my long blacks. One of my top picks in Perth.
Seriously the best hot chocolate you will have in your life.
Seduced by a Puerto Rican long black coffee this morning at the Pony. Just fabulous and made extra special by the unique ambience of this most unusual and enticing establishment. Best coffee in Perth!
My favourite coffee place. Pony is a unique little place with a lot of heart!
While it might be a little hard to find, and the ordering process is a little out of the ordinary, Pony makes the best coffee in Perth.
The cute renovated stable is decorated from top to toe, and the building itself is right next to a spectacular ROA mural.
They make their coffee strong, and very quickly. And I like that they have a very solid small group of staff (just three guys) who are always there to make great coffee and have a chat.
Love. Seriously love everything about this quirky little cafe.
Brilliant coffee, great atmosphere.
Variable quality. I love the decor here, it's so unusual and cute. Unfortunately the coffee is very variable - I came here daily as I work in West Perth, but sometimes I would get a terrible coffee and other times it was fantastic. Whenever they were the slightest bit busy you could count on an average or below average cup. The quality was too variable, so now I go elsewhere for better consistency.
COFFEE!. Omg great coffee!
Tried this place for the first time today and will definitely return the next time I'm in the area. Great (strong) coffee, friendly service and lovely chilled out vibe. Highly recommended!
Great coffee and amazing location. As it is so tucked away you feel special for finding it, which translates to a special cup of coffee. Highly recommended
Was a little hard to find but after all the rave reviews from friends I made the effort. Totally worth it!!
Despite being tucked away this place is always busy, and for good reason. They make fantastic coffee. Their layout is definitely different, but it goes well with their really laid back atmosphere. And you can pay by putting coins into a chute. Awesome :-)
Love it! Love the idea of byo food.
In my continuing effort to find decent coffee near my new west perth work place, I stumbled across Pony expresso (if stumbled = undertook a dedicated back lane way search). Fantastic service, there was a short line but they plucked through it quickly, while devoting the kind of friendliness that makes you at ease and at home. Coffee was great, double shot standard but they can do weaker if requeted. Could have been warmer but still reasonable drinking temperature. Biscuits etc behind the counter and it's a bit of a help yourself, trust system. All in all it's hidden location, greay coffee and friendly makes you feel 'in the know' once you discover it. I'm a fan and will be returning.
Let's start with the pros. Very friendly staff. Very nice setup and comfortable setting. Cons. If this was not so highly rated i would think the coffee is good. But given the reputation as one of the best, I'm afraid it doesn't live up to its name. The coffee is better than most places but certainly not as one of the best coffee shops in Perth. There are many better ones around who has a Much lower profile and yet producing more consistent and better coffee. (don't get the wrong idea. I'm not saying the coffee isn't good. Just not that great as the reputation suggests)
Best Coffee in Perth. I had tried the best coffee in Melbourne. But this is the best coffee in Perth. Alot of people small cosy place. Would be good to have coffee on the way to work.
Super tasty!!!. Best coffee i've had! And i drink a lot of coffee. Especially for those who like strong coffee - long/short mach's, espresso's, ristretto's etc. The single origin is so so good.
One of the best coffee spots in Perth - if you can find it! Quirky, trendy and great quality coffee. Make the effort to find this place up the lane, around the corner and down the steps!
Friendly engaging staff and easily the bestcoffee in Perth that I've found and I'm actively hunting!
Best coffee I've had in Perth. I was picking something up in West Perth and checked Urbanspoon for somewhere to grab a good coffee. I wasn't disappointed. Easily the best latte I've had in Perth, + friendly service and a relaxed vibe.
Awesome coffee. Little piece of melb. Def will b back!
IT'S WORTH THE JOURNEY!. I had been told this coffee was great from my work colleagues so I decided to take a walk up the hill to see for myself.
Well they were right this coffee is about the best I have ever tasted. I had a long mac topped up almost to the top and was the perfect balance of coffee and milk. The coffee is smooth and full of flavour without at all being bitter like some other places.
A quirky converted building in Mayfair that was once the local horse stables, Pony Espresso is a place you can take along your own food to have with your coffee if you like.
Even though I now pass two coffee shops on the way it is definitely worth the trip for that perfect cup of coffee.
A hidden gem!. My hubby and I decided to try coffee from Pony Express O this morning, and I'm so glad we did. This place is a hidden little gem in West Perth! The two barrista girls who served us were friendly, welcoming us in and explaining how it all works as they knew we were new customers. What a refreshing approach it is to be invited back behind the counter to see the staff actually making your coffee. We both had a flat white, and I'm pleased to say this was one of the best coffees I've had in a long time! It was smooth and creamy, with no bitter or burnt after taste. The price was more than reasonable, and the cookies behind the baristas look so yummy, too! We'll happily go back here. 5 stars from me. : )
Crema Fan. As I am a fan of Crema Coffe, I was told about this place from a friend. What a fantastic little coffe shop - stable. The coffee was like having a little Melbourne experience!!! I am a big fan. When in Perth, I will definitely be calling in.
Garrett Genius !!!. The man behind the great LITTLE Blink in Freo has done it again !!!
Great vibe
Great place
Great coffee
Great service
As Molly would say....... Do yourself a favour !
Uber Groovy. Shhh…don't tell anyone about Pony Espress O…because it's so groovy I'd love to just keep it as 'my little espresso bar' for just that much longer. Though I suspect that might be difficult given the high quality of its brew.
Garrett (the barista behind Blink in Freo) does a mean coffee. His ethos: I'll do coffee the way customers want it. This is a place where you can have your coffee in any fashion you so wish. No hoity-toity frowns, nor questions asked. It's very quintessentially Italian. And I like it.
So unique! And the coffee's great too. I can honestly say I've never seen anything quite like this place. If you approach this place from Mayfair Street off Colin Street like I did, facing the building, walk to the right along the side brick wall - entrance is at the end on the left. I went in a wooden gate on the left and ended up on the wrong side. Do not go in the first door on the left side (I think it's someone's office).
You end up behind the coffee machine, and get to have a chat while you're coffee is made. It was a nice change from the usual. If you have the correct change, you can drop it in this funky looking silver tube.
Service was very good, casual and friendly. He explained how the ordering and payment works and that they don't serve any food (except for a few cookies) but you can bring in your own food. There are some seats inside and some outside as well, and the decor reflects the building's original purpose as a horse stable.
My skinny cap was great, he warned me it would be strong but I really enjoyed it. My only regret is that I no longer work in that end of town, otherwise I think it would be a great place to be a regular.
Best looking coffee hangout & great name ( in keeping with the horse theme)
Saddle Up. What a delightlul little venue, a refreshing breath of Melbourne in bovine old Perth. The coffee is excellent, served with genuine affection and style. Parking is tricky, but the Red Cat is free, so do it. I think its BYO food too!
You’ll need to hunt for this cafe because I can assure you, it won’t be one you just stumble past. Located on quiet Mayfair Street (and then through the carpark and around the corner into the old stable) Pony Express O is a hidden gem.
I remember reading about Pony Express O a few years ago during a flight from Perth to Sydney. There was a small article in the Qantas inflight magazine about one of the most expensive coffee machines being purchased for a small coffee bar in Perth. The name ‘Pony Express O’ stuck with me afterwards, but it wasn’t for a few years that I had my first experience at Pony Express O. Pony Express O is located in a small converted stable on Mayfair Street in West Perth. There’s a little outdoor undercover area which features astro-turf and the decor inside is really funky. There’s no food offered as it’s all about the coffee – however customers are welcome to bring their own food and eat it in-house while sipping a Pony Express O coffee. There are two coffee machines at Pony Express O – one especially used for espresso coffee (or coffee served without milk) and the second is used for coffee that is served with milk. Pony Express O uses Crema coffee beans and you can definitely tell that it i

As mentioned in previous posts, I do love my coffee in the morning. I also like to get out of the office and have a gossip with L, one of my workmates. After hearing about Pony Express O, one Friday we decided to take the longer walk and go to Mayfair Str
Located at the back of a historical refurbished stable, down Mayfair Street in West Perth is a quirky new establishment that is a hidden Gem in West Perth. Pony Express O (takes its name from the fact that it is located in the trendy, 1900’s built heritag
Possibly the coolest coffee joint in Perth! Consistently great coffee by one of the loveliest ladies you’ll meet. Keep up the great work Wendy!
I attended a function at this venue recently and could have enjoyed myself more. This space has an atmosphere that encourages folks to converse and relax. This is a good place to be.
I can't express enough how good the coffee is here!! This hidden gem of a coffee shop has a great vibe and has a pretty cool seating area where you can relax. It feels very comfortable walking in and most of the time you coffee gets remembered if you come back - which makes you feel more than just a customer buying coffee!
Highly recommend going here and trying this coffee, and then just keep going back!
Make sure you find this place in West Perth if you love your coffee, it’s tucked away down a lane way and in an old stable. Wendy the owner is always up for a chat and makes the best single origin coffee in West Perth IMHO.

This is a hidden gem and one of my favourites in the city. The atmosphere is great here and so is the coffee! Enjoyed a perfect flat white as well as tea while spending my morning working at a cozy corner. So glad I found this place!
Best coffee in West Perth.
Garrett and his staff do a great job here. Great coffee and a chat every time. A little hidden off the beaten track, but well worth looking for and finding.
Great little cafe hidden in an alleyway. Coffee made here is absolutely fantastic and the people working are all lovely. The service is pretty quick as well and you don't have to wait too long for a cuppa ;)
Hands down the best coffee I've had in Perth. Staff are wonderful and so friendly, lovely venue with excellent atmosphere. And AMAZING COFFEE!
