Review Shun Fung On The River - Perth

A good place perfectly on location !

Terrible service and the food is much more expensive than last year. Just booked three round tables for 30 people in a private room at noon today. Surprisingly found at least four square tables of strangers occupied my private room at 11:34 am. My round tables are not set up yet and 30 guests are coming in 20 minutes. After I issued complaints, two male managers confronted with me and argued that they have every right to use my private room before noon. Seriously? Have you ever seen any restaurant manager who would tell bride and groom that you are not allowed to use a private wedding space earlier because your booking time is exactly 7 pm ? Ridiculously!

Look I had a nice time when I visited because of the company... but... the food is below average. The entrees were basically what looked like old vegatables with some raw salmon with very bad presentation. The mains were fine but unremarkable. The deep fried crab dish was pretty bad IMHO but that could be a taste thing and we weren't given any implements to break the crab so we all sat there trying to crack it with our teeth (maybe a cultural thing?). The fried rice was below a local Chinese shops standard except for the inclusion of crab meat. Dessert was described as seasonal fruits, but actually was orange and apple presented like your mum would after football practice (I mean really). The staff were helpful enough except simple mistakes. Like they only took me and my partners plate after the entrees and then didn't give us a new one until we asked. They do appear a bit rude but probably a confidence thing. The manager is more rude with an attitude of just trying to get things out as quickly as possible, i.e. comes out and leans over people to place a dish on the table. Also ignores any questions about the dish. Here's the real thing about the staff. I've had friends who tried to work here before. They promise a high rate (for a Chinese restaurant so we are talking minimum wage) after an initial "trial period" where you work for free. Standard trick, however that's why the staff aren't the best and overall I don't feel great about supporting such a place.

Went for lunch. Service was speedy but the the competency of the staff's english is to be desired. They struggled to understand wen questioned about teir meals. Food arrived at different times but was generally good. No kids activities. Asked for an activity and were given 1 pencil between 2 kids. No paper given although the table cloths have a paper covering which then came in handy. In all we had a good time.

Had a $45.00 Banquet Dinner, loverly spot but the food was well below par of what you should get for that money, disapiontng foodcourt type meal, dont bother.

Very dissapointed! Tried this restaurant using a groupon voucher, the set menu was very basic, the entrée choice was okay, the main choice was noodles or rice. We all had something different, but all tasted the same. You get a better tasting meal from a food court buffet. My thoughts are that the groupon voucher is to promote the business, due to the quality of the food I could never refer anyone. Seems like a wasted oppotunity to me.

Went to Shun Fung for the first time in ages, food gorgeous, but service not very good. We got there and the guy at the front desk was on the phone, we figured they must be closed as he made no attempt to hang up, eventually we were seated and after 20 minutes (and having to find someone to place our order to) the nice young waitress took our order, I thought it odd that she was not writing it down ..... you guessed it, the order was incomplete when it arrived as she had forgotten a dish, how hard is it to write an order down? we told her that some of the order was missing and 20 minutes later the dish arrived, but we had already finished eating, they didn't even knock it off the bill. Disappointing that service can let a very good kitchen down. It will be a while before I give them another go, I hope they work on their service between now and then.

Been to Shun Fung on the River a couple of times for yumcha as well as dinner and I liked the food! It's a pity that parking is hard to come by due to the construction going on for Elizabeth Quay, although it's not too far a walk from the carpark outside the Perth Concert Hall. The steamed dumplings are really good here!

It was really good food and good service when we had a lunch today. I use ourdeal voucher, expect small portion but it come quite big portion for main course. It was also nice entree. I will come back again.

It was really nice and quiet for a family meal. The view was reeaally good, the waiters were polite. Since we were the only ones there our food came out fast.

Hits and Misses. He: Beautiful view, aged furniture and carpet, unfriendly and unprofessional staff. Food wise, the assorted seafood & fish maw soup and crispy golden prawns were great. The remaining dishes were average.

She: Very average food but the view is great. Price is a bit steep but justified by the view and ingredients used. The food however is nothing to rave about. Definitely not in a hurry to return.

Rate: 5.5/ 10

Lousy food, poor service. Went to the place with my family on the eve of Chinese New Year (18 Feb). We ordered 5 courses:
1)Chicken Soup (tasteless, diluted)
2)Mushroom with mussels(taste average)
3)Veggie (turns out to be same as 2)
4)Fish (not hot ...was served cold)
5)Duck (Taste average)
We waited 45 min for the food to be served and service was extremely bad with staff hiding behind the counter... I will never go back to this place.
Very disappointed with the standard and still wondering how they could get so many awards.
I personally do not think Perth's Chinese food standard is this bad but I guess their chefs must have left for greener pasture. Please avoid this place. There are better restaurants around Northbridge.

I have had the pleasure of being a guest at this fantastic Resturant on 2 occasions, the staff are just fantastic and the food was to die for. If you have a chance just go.

Loved this place!! Great service, very friendly waitstaff, and the food was delicious :) we were a group of 10 and we all enjoyed it and intend to go back soon.

Lovely Food with a View. I came here on voucher with 5 other friends, the food was fresh and the flavours
were just right, everything was lovely.
I don't know what some of the bad reviews are about, the waitress's do not have the best English, although they are always polite and happy to assist.
Great to have a nice outlook and view, a really nice evening enjoyed by all

Saw this place put up voucher again on scoopon. From past experience, my suggestion is not to get them. They cheated me two dishes and we were left hungry still. Supposed to get 2 soups ($22 value), 2 entrees ($24 value) but only received 1 of each. Food was mediocre. Entree was 3 thin slice of sesame toast (supposedly cost $12, or in my case worth $24 since we didnt get the other one). Tiger prawn was just 2 prawn in sweet chilli sauce ($76 for this?). Fried rice and crispy pork was small serving to be shared in two ($25ea value), the one in food court taste better only cost $10. Mushroom soup in superior chicken stock was so strong like medicine it was bitter we struggle to finish it but we were just too hungry. The only good thing was the deep fried ice cream for dessert. For $69, hardly worth the $216.80 they claiming it to be worth. I think its worth $69 so they prob made no loss in this voucher. Theres nothing fine dining about this place, only the price. Reading others comment, I'm not alone in this.

Tess. Took our visiting family for what was expected to be a lovely upmarket dinner New Year's Eve 2013/14. Food was lovely, certainly not fine dining and staff had difficulty with language barrier. Upon paying bill noted public holiday surcharge of 15% had been added to the account. This was some $42 for us. When I disputed the charge, as New Year's Eve is NOT a public holiday, I was told In no uncertain terms this is company policy and we would have been told at the time of booking. We certainly were NOT told this at time of booking as we would not have continued with the reservation. The restaurant should be thankful for the extra patronage for the night, not ripping people off by adding further surcharges which undoubtedly wouldn't be passed onto their staff! Have ruined it for us, we won't be back.

Brilliant dining!..by fussy diner. Came in on a voucher half expecting second class citizen service. I don't know how this place got a bad rap on here unless it was previous owners who were messing up.
We could not fault it! Food was fresh and top notch, service was great (no trying to hail a waiter for two hours like at the Vines resort Rest.) Great view of the river, open balconies on the river.. even the plates were pretty. The place was quiet and relaxing and food just kept coming! We will definitely go back and pay full menu prices which, btw, are reasonable..new Fav!!!
Ateh222
Average, very average.... The staff are fine, friendly and courteous, but they're way behind as to the quality of the food and what they charge for it.

I get far better value from any asian restaurant in Northbridge, and the food is much better too.
Blueiis
Not a good experience. The restaurant looked good inside and out, however, upon being seated outside, we had the delight of the ferry engine vibrations coming through the seats.
The service was awful although they were very friendly, when we sat down we were given the wrong menu, we ordered two drinks and whilst waiting for them, we were asked three more times if we would like a drink, from three different people.
Our soup arrived, very nice, but we couldn't relax as every few minutes someone would come up to see if we had finished, and one even had the audacity to ask my husband if he'd finished as he was spooning the soup in his mouth!
We asked for some wine, the waiter didn't understand us at first, he then got the list, put it on the table and walked off.
The next few meals went as quickly as the first...so rushed. Then we waited for about 5 minutes for the remainder, which was better, only to be given the mushrooms/broccoli with the rice and nothing else at first, the broccoli was cold. By the time the crispy pork came out the rice was cold. They cleared the table including napkins! Then the deep fried ice cream came out, not very nice...and we had nothing to wipe our hands on, had to use the corner of the paper table cloth.
We then went to pay and the bill mentioned meal for four! Hmm not sure how that works...We will NOT be going back.

Oily and overpriced processed chicken. Voucher $63 gave us oily prawn toast dumplings with a thumb nail or meat. 1oily fried rice but it was delicious and processed chicken with crispy noodle a d tactless sauce. worth maybe $40 being generous tip give the voucher away. waste of time.

Location is excellent. However this is not a Fine Dining restaurant as stated.
The service was good however the staff couldn't speak a word of English. My husband said "I ate all of the prawns" and the waitress had to get the supervisor for her to translate his comment. We then looked at each
other and laughed!
The quality of the food is very poor like I said it's NOT Fine Dining. Every thing was battered even the desert tasted like it was battered in the same oil as the pork. The spring roll & Prawn toast was so greasy. I to have had better suburban takeaways!
I purchased a Gropon voucher for 69 dollars it said it was worth $216 . However in my opinion the quality of food was worth far less than a 50buck takeaway!
My husband and I put it down to a experience and decided there and then never to go back.

If my husband refuses to eat something than that says alot about the place.

Great view, awkward service, horrible food, over-priced.. Voucher time again! This time for lunch at Shun Fung! My partner and I saw the reviews but thought we'd give it a go anyway, whoah, lesson learnt! Upon arrival we were greeted and shown to our table right at the balcony. The view is really lovely, and we were lucky to go when it wasn't raining. We were not offered water but water glasses were placed on the table.

After making our selection from the limited "Voucher Menu", we requested to see the full menu to order more dishes. The waitress was clueless and I had to repeat myself a few times (language barrier?). We ordered Squid Tentacles (my favourite), Vegetables with Oyster Sauce as well as a bottle of Bunkers 'Lefthanders' SBS and a sparkling water - Together, these items came to $62.30! So excessive! Could not believe the San Pell was $8.50 and the VEGETABLES were $12.00!!!

Anyway, onto the food - Pork Dumplings and Pork Siu Mai were exactly the same ones you'd get from the supermarket, only topped with some Tobiko. Beef Flat Noodles were the same quality as Old Shanghai Food Court Kway Teow (including excessive amounts of oil), Squid Tentacles were battered too heavily, resulting in a donut-like exterior and it was EXTREMELY salty (or had msg? Either way, we could see crystals all over the outside of the batter) and I ended up having to skull my wine to get tipsy so I could stomach eating something so salty. The vegetables were cooked nicely but the sauce was gluggy and gelatinous... The only saving grace was the Fried Rice, which was only nice because there wasn't something majorly wrong with it!

I am horribly disappointed (but not surprised) by my experience here. Service was almost non-existent and when it did come, it was difficult to convey what we wanted. I don't understand how a "Chef " can send out food that is to this standard. It was worse than the crap you get from a dodgy food court, and for that price, they are clearly taking the piss.

Very rude and overpriced. Went there last night on a last resort because nothing else is open in perth on a Monday evening. could not believe the prices where do they think they are? service was terrible. $14 for 1lt coke only saviour was the food it was good not the best but tasty definitely not worth the cost.would not recommend them at all unless you have endless $$$ to throw away there are much better chinese resturaunts in northbridge and suburbs

Nice lunchtime spot. Went today on a coupon the staff were very attentive like in a pricy 5star place the food was superb we had the lobster dish and chilli chicken we will definitely return
Mystery Diner
Nice view. Went there on a Sun afternoon using a voucher.
Setting: Upstairs with great view and you can sit at the table on the balcony. Nice ambient. Contrary to other people's experience using the voucher, we actually got a table which had a great view. I actually think every table will get a view as it is not a very big place.
Service: Good! The manager was friendly and the wait persons were polite. Table get cleared very quickly.
Food: Prawn toast (nice), sui mai (will not recommend); Singapore vermicelli (ok - a bit plain); Crispy noodles with mushroom sauce (nice!)
Price: Quite expensive - expect above $20 for noodles dishes. But the portion is quite big.
Overall: Nice ambient and view. Will consider going back for special occasions.
Food Safari
What a horrible dining experience!. We had a 3-course dinner voucher which included 2 entrees, 2 mains and seafood fried rice and stir fried vegetables. We chose chicken corn and crab meat soup for entree. It was good but there was hardly any chicken nor crab meat in it. Actually crab meat tasted just like the chicken corn soup. Tons of corn though! First main was Singapore chiili lobster. Lobster was OK but the sauce was so sweet, we couldn't even taste the chillies. Second main was spicy chilli chicken. There were more huge cut up red chillies on the plate than chicken. Chicken was so bland. Seafood (which was just small prawns) fried rice was a small serving and that too was so bland, needed a lot of flavour. The stir fry vegies was so oily, bland again and had nothing special but canned mushrooms and baby corn. Our friend ordered for himself chicken corn soup and beef noodles. For $10.50 bowl of soup with hardly any chicken, that's very expensive. Noodles $21 was so oily and hardly any beef. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone. If we were paying for view, well you can't see anything at night as they had the plastic shades down. The voucher was +50% off the menu prices but the serving you get and quality was way less than that.

Dinner on 20th May 2013. Bought a voucher of $138 for 4 people but only 3 turned up. Each of us has a place of half lobster and 1 guest has two. Lovely lobster I must say. Then came the three mains. Disappointedly the dishes were only half filled of the plate. Meats in the dishes were probably enough for two and so is the fried rice. Two softs drinks, a tea and two desserts costs me $39.50. This voucher is totally a ripped off. Service is rated as 2 stars.

Bad. Bad. And Bad. I was hoping the reviews were wrong, and initially I thought they might be. The service was really good, the waitress talked me through some of the dishes so very pleasant. Then the food came. Oh dear! The mixed entree, was a small spring roll, prawn wonton, and a slither of prawn toast. I also had the scallops for the entree, which cost a fortune for four??? After I'd had the main and left, it cost just shy of $100.00 for a starter and main!! I couldn't believe it. And the food wasn't that good. The next morning I felt rather unwell too...completely disappointed and the only thing I can recommend to anyone visiting is not to waste your money and go to the Lucky Shag next door

Great location, great food!. Had a lovley dinner with my family on Saturday night. The restaurnt is perfectly situated on the Barrack Jetty over looking the Swan River. The food was delicious and the service was good. Overall it was a great night out!

Disgusting Food, Horrible Service, Terrible Experience. We attended Shun Fung on Australia Day 26/01/2013. We booked the restaurant weeks in advance and requested to sit on the balcony. This however did not occur even though their was an empty table. After asking 2 waitresses we were moved to the empty seat. We order a beer and a bottle of champagne then proceeded to the all you can eat buffet which consisted of 5 different dishes a rice and noodles. Now bear in mind the charge on the night was $70 per head so we expected half decent food, however all the dishes were cold, the noodles and rices has next to no flavor, it was horrible slop. I wouldn't wish this meal on anyone. I then asked the waitress why the food was not hot and she had no answer and said people pay for the view. We pushed our dishes aside and the waitress came back with a plate of fried chicken dripping in oil. At this point my partner and I had had enough we advised the waitress that we were not paying for the meal but we would pay for the drinks. The waitress got the manager, the manager came over and started to yell and scream at us telling us to get out, we however had a full bottle of champagne and a beer at the price of $52 to finish. The manager went away for a minute then came back with a paper bag and put the champagne in it and proceeded to yell and scream at us to get out. At this stage it was 8pm and the fireworks had just started. We got up from our seats after the barrage of abuse and left the restaurant champagne bottle in hand. I have never ever been treated with such disrespect. To charge $70 per head and the food would not of been fit to serve my dog, then to cop abuse from the waitress and manage to get out of the restaurant. I would not recommend this restaurant to my worst enemy. It is beyond terrible. It is a disgrace that any restaurant can think they can get away with serving disgusting food couple with terrible service and put a hefty price on it because of the view. I will tell everyone i know about my experience here as people need to be warned about places like this so they can avoid the experience we have endured.

Had a good time. Went with family. Food was good compared to some of the chinese restaurants around. Portions not enough for us. Service can be improved.

Used a Groupon voucher. Not as advertised. A 4 course degustation turned out to be 3 small courses with no wine included. We don't feel we received anywhere near the dollar value of the voucher.
It's sad, because the atmosphere was lovely and the food nice, but not worth the cost.
Annie65
Don't waste your money. Went here with 4 friends for what was termed a degustation. The ambiance of the restaurant was good but the service was extremely slow and the food was very ordinary and overpriced. We ordered extra but still the food was really meager and we left still feeling hungry, There are many asian restaurants in Perth and most of them are better than this one,

BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. Shung Fung is a good restaurant only because of its location. The food is not too bad either but I would not recommend this restaurant to people who have any kind of expectation of customer service. The service is appalling in the restaurant as well as on the phone. I have dined at Shung Fung about 3- 4 times after which i decided that it was better to take a take-away rather than dine-in. I have laced a take away order with them few times before and when I called them today 05.08.2012 they tell me that they do not take orders over the phone anymore and that we would need to come in and order for a take away as well. This is just ridiculous! Moreover the lady on the phone was quite rude and not helpful at all. I told her that I am ordering in advance just to save time so she turns around and tells me that you can come in and order and wait for 10-15 mins and thats not long! Who is she to decide that anyway!. This restaurant is getting worse by the day and I hope its not long before either it shuts down due to incompetent staff or the entire management changes!

EXPENSIVE. Awful service. Awful Food. Will NOT be returning!!! My friends and I had been craving Chinese food for weeks so decided that we would try Shun Fung which is close to the Office. On a Thursday night the place was virtually empty.. as dinner progressed I started to understand why... the staff seem bewildered when we asked questions..specifically whether portion size was sufficient to share.. even management couldn't seem to help. We ordered the Peking Duck which has 2 courses.. in all the Chinese restaurants I have been to they make a wonderful show of creating the dish at the table.. this was just plonked down.. the second Duck course was truly awful.. I'm pretty sure they used frozen vegetables in the San Choy Bow (!!!!!) The Honey chicken was barely edible (scratch that it was inediable) It was frighteningly sticky and stuck to your mouth and the plate as it cooled.. The KunPo Spicy chicken just as awful.. some sort of secret unidentifiable and yuck sauce.. and the King Prawns (while fresh) were heavily battered and came with black bits and horrid tasting nuts.. all the food was clearly not freshly cooked... and to cap all this the meal was INCREDIBLY expensive. I admit I'm from Melbourne and therefore a food-snob.. but I would expect top chefs and top of the range Chinese Food at these prices.. we got food that wouldn't sell in a Food court.. so very very disappointed! Urbanspoon please change the meal prices you have listed.. they are clearly wrong.. mains start at $24. Awful Awful Awful.
Ben Law
How does this place afford the rent? Dead quiet, only a small selection of dim sum too.
The quality was pretty good, but expensive, like Dragon in Northbridge. But at least Dragon's good with variety.

Used the ent book, wouldn't be happy paying full price

I have been to shun fung a few times, the food is pretty good but the service a bit of hit & miss. Most of the waitress don't speak any English, I ordered a banquet, set menu for 4 people. One of guest wanted to try chilli chicken I got the menu, pointed out to the waitress and explained an extra dish. We waited and waited then ask the staff where the chilli dish was, I was told there's no other dishes coming. I was a bit annoyed especially gone to the effort of showing the staff what I wanted. 10 mins later was told the beef dish that did come was suspose to be the chicken dish that we ordered!!! Then the waitress came & took the plate away. We didn't get the food we ordered was treated badly no apology from management. I won't be going back.
Yummilicious
River View. If you would like to have a river view you might have to beg if you have a discount VOUCHER... forget it! :( Not even the food can compensate for being put in a bad spot. The voucher said it is worth over $260 of food ....I dont think so. Not a place that I would recommend.

So very bad!. With mixed reviews of Shun Fung, we thought we would try it. We were looking for a restaurant with great views (check), accessible from Perth CBD (Check), round table didning for ten people condusive to conversation? (check). All looks good as we enter the Great Shun Fung. All down hill from there! Only one of the 6 staff that we were in contact with seemed to be able to understand English. Every answer was "I see manager". We ordered vegetarian entree and received chicken. By the time this was rectified (having had to speak to two staff) everyone was finished entree and one of our guests ate hers alone. The food was served on rediculously large plates so as not to allow room for all share dishes on the table and we were being hassled basically to eat faster because there was space needed. The food was all bland, all of it. Small expensive serves on large plates. One guest ordered a flat noodle dish only to get a stringy bland noodle dish. Overall the food was extremely average, extremely expensive, the service not good, no cocktail menu and then the ultimate charged for things we didnt have on the bill! Do yourself a favour and dont go there!! Way overpriced for what it is. You will find your local chinese restaurant much better value.

Stunning Backdrop. Took a client here for a business dinner and the service and food were superb. It's not cheap but the quality of the food is great and the staff are very accommodating. Recommended.

Bad Chinese restaurants still exist. My wife & I spent a wonderful week at the Quay West resort at Bunker Bay visiting Margaret River wineries, trying & buying wines of world quality. We stayed at the Perth Novotel on our first & two last nights as a convenience for our Sydney flights. The restaurants at both hotels were first class. One of our great loves is beautiful Chinese cuisine, which we eat regularly in our home city & also when we visit Melbourne & other world cities. Some restaurants are of course better than others, but we can honestly say we had not had a bad Chinese meal since the days when you were given a knife & fork up front & they had pepper & salt on the table--- about 40 years ago ( we are no spring chickens) ENTER THE SHUN FUNG. We noticed it on a walk on our day of arrival in WA.& it was close to our hotel. The Novotel had recommended a Chinese restaurant, a 15 minute taxi ride away & knew of the Shun Fung, but little about it. Anyway we decided to make a reservation for the Friday night & eat at the hotel on the Saturday night. We arrived at the Shun Fung at 7.30pm, a little surprised at how empty this large centrally located place was for a Friday night. Relaxed with a beautiful chardonnay from a pretty good wine list the food commenced arriving. Our entree was a house special, a clilled crispy skin chicken done their secret way. Terrible, skin like thick wet cardboard, stringy & completely tasteless. We told the waitress we couldnt eat it & so she removed it. Next our 3 mains accompanied by 2 little open bowls of steamed rice-- no sealed container to keep it hot, as we are accustomed. These 3 dishes were inedible with the 2 sauces tasting like medicine & the mixed vegs consisting of hacked up stalks. This restaurant is well located, seems to be well run from a service point of view, but totally lacks any skill in the kitchen. We dont get it. We ate nothing paid our bill & returned to the Novotel for a delicious slow braised beef cheek with winter vegs & a great Sandalford Shiraz. Expensive night !!!!!, but we will take note of local knowledge in unfamiliar places from now on.
Ed
Good food but the noise. We like the food as well as being at the jetty, can view out to the river, etc.
However, make sure you don't pick a busy Friday night. The noise from downstair was overwhelming, spoilt a good night.
Ray
Should have followed the reviews and not have visited. Terrible service.
Mike
This used to be a fun place with a good dim sum vibe. Now it's virtually empty, staff have no clue and it's bloody expensive. You get the feeling it's going out of business. If everyone else makes the same decision as we did, to never go there again, then it probably will
Kazzablanca13
Took some overseas clients here for lunch on Saturday. They wanted lunch with a view and joked about the cost. I was more embarassed by the service. The place was practically empty. The guys knew what they wanted and listed off their orders but the dishes came out in dribs and drabs. Staff were blunt and unwelcoming. Won't be bothering with this place again. Shun Fung can keep their 'ambience'...

:/ What's the australian for "SHITE"?. Is there anything more aggravating than receiving ridiculously appalling service? Why, YES!!! Yes there IS!!!!! Paying through the bleedin NOSE for it. Don't make the mistake for paying for the "view". We've been there - don't you go there too.

Came here for Yum Cha on a Friday. It was completely empty and doesn't have the usual bustle of Yum Cha and the trolleys of food but the food was still good (not too strong). More expensive than the usual Yum Cha but this is expected.
The Foodie Hub
Shun Fung on the River is situated down near the Bell Tower, in between “The Lucky Shag” and “Halo”. It has recognised that the standard it was delivering was falling short of the level it wanted to achieve and has recently addressed that. It has appointed four chefs from China with 100 years experience between them to head the kitchen and significantly improve their menu. Featured here at thefoodiehub.com is a photographic gallery exhibiting the beautiful Chinese food they are now cooking up. Enjoy.
Queen Of Bad Timing
Recently I was lucky enough to be invited to a bloggers dinner at Shun Fung on the River by another food blogger (WenY Wonders Why). It was a complimentary banquet specially thought of by the owner Eva to mark the start of a new era for the restaurant. Four new chefs have been brought in to the revamped venue where seasonal ingredients are used in a take on classic Chinese recipes.

Soft flakes of steamed trout with medallions of slippery shiitake mushrooms and a scattering of dried Goji berries. The Goji berries introduced a tart flavour to the otherwise delicate and sweet tropical fish. A gorgeous dish. For the second preparation the trout was lightly battered and pan fried. Not being gluten free I didn’t try this style.

Who knew cumin lamb could be this tasty? Slow-cooked with leeks, it goes just perfectly with the Singapore noodles. The stir-fried squid with mange tout (snowpeas to southern hemisphere types) is similarly delicious. We sit contentedly on the balcony overlooking the mighty Swan River, sheltered from most of the brisk southerly breeze, eat our fill, put the world to rights, then retire righteously to bed. I love nights like this. Share this: Facebook Posted in Asian restaurants , Perth , restaurant reviews | Tagged

Shun Fung on the River is a Chinese restaurant overlooking the Swan River at the Barrack Street jetty in Perth. It’s got a lovely location, next to the Lucky Shag , and a stone’s throw away from the Bell Tower. I was surprised to receive an invitation to Shun Fung from my fellow food blogger, Wen, from WenY Wonders Why . I had met Wen at the Media Launch of the Italian Cooking Master Class by Accento and ICCI . Wen recommended a visit to this place even though years earlier he had visited and vowed never to visit. Reading the reviews from fellow diners to Shun Fung, the food is pretty bad despite having an excellent location and service going for it. Only because Wen gave it the thumbs up, did I visit. Shun Fung is actually part of a chain of 30 restaurants in China, with the only restaurant in Australia located in Perth which was opened several years a
