Review Ginling Chinese Restaurant - Plympton

Josh G
Nice family owned traditional Chinese restaurant. Lots of history, been around for a long time and does a great job. They do lots of takeaway and people come from all over Adelaide for it. Restaurant experience is nice, friendly staff and authentic. Plenty of food options and decent wine list. Definitely recommended!

As a group of friends we gave been attending Ginling for years. We have always found the food delicious and filling. We end up taking home our left overs. Staff are friendly and attentive and the restuarant is always filled with satisfied customers. Don't waste any time booking a night out.

The Chow mien and the Beef fillet steak Cantonese never fails. The fried rice wasn't that great! A bit undercook!

The staff were SO lovely. The best service I've had in a long time. The food was delicious too. Very fresh. We will definitely return.

Roast duck always good. The eggplant dish salted fish dish... the sauce was good but where's the rest of the eggplant? This is normally my favourite dish, but was disappointed that night. It never has tofu in it, this time half the pot was tofu, not a fan of tofu by the way. Not sure whether it was the waiter who took the order or the chef. I've had this dish easily over 20 times & other Chinese restaurants have it too... but its the first time came out with all other random ingredients like tofu carrot celery etc Didnt bother complaining because there was alot of miss communication. We ordered a family size bowl of soup to share... came out with individual bowls so they took it back & re cooked it. Asked for red vinegar for soup (very typical Chinese request) was giving black vinegar for cooking - maybe. Got too hard. Just wanted to eat dinner & go home. The sichuan pork ribs... not sure what it was but it stinks, it was an unpleasant pork smell, dont know how to explain. Just flavour hard to eat. It was very tender though, also tastes oily. Should just stick to our usual sweet sour pork.

Really nice suburban Chinese restaurant. Dishes were tasty and very good serving sizes, and were reasonably priced. The staff were also very friendly.

Consistently very good over many years. Can't think of a bad meal we've had from here. Eat in and try the things on the alternative menu.

Food was good. Customer service could be more friendly. If you want to split bills then minimum 4 people need to eat. It’s a ridiculous and unnecessary rule.

It has been a while since my partner & I visited this restaurant. The staff are friendly & efficient. We got a table for two at the back of the restaurant, which was quiet, though we were early (17:30). We took a bottle of wine (corkage is cheap) & had the Peking Duck w\ Noodles & the Salt & Pepper Lobster, both of which were ample portions & tasty 😋. We will be back.
We entered the restaurant at 9:20 pm and were greeted with a disclaimer ""The toilets cannot be used and the restaurant will be cleaned and vacuumed" so we should sit only if we were ok with that!! Least expected in the hospitality business, very unprofessional. Our first impression was bad but I must commend Gordan the staff who served us was absolutely brilliant, he should be welcoming guests instead.

The food was average but the portions were good, so do not order much. Fried rice was too dry and the garlic chicken to bland but the starters were good, we offered prawns and BBQ pork.
Adventures Around Adelaide
Amazing food great to come with a group order different dishes load up the lazy Susan and dig in. The duck was incredible the flavour and texture is the best in Adelaide. Can't wait to return.

In Jingling restaurant. That ugly old woman provides terrible service. It is the worst I have ever
met. Very disgusting. I won't be there any more. Many customers have suffered from this, both the local and the chinese. I am not stupid. So I will not pay for that attitude. The old waitress is very rude and very impolite. I felt I was not welcomed in their cafe. A very disappointing experience. Will never ever be there again

Amazing place....the roasted duck the best dish...the duck perfectly cooked and blended with the correct amount of spices and also the spring rolls are amazing... recommended!!

A local/family friendly resturant with great service. Meals were large & well the priced. Our meals came out super quick & we were well looked after by staff.

Hands down the best crispy beef in Adelaide. Worth coming just for that. The place is otherwise your typical neighbourhood Chinese restaurant. it's busy every night of the week and full of Chinese people so you know it's good.
Definitely recommend to those on that side of town

This is the very best in service and value in Chinese Cuisine, my favorite for 20 years now and remains the top of my list. The food is so delicious you want another serve, outstanding in presentation and quality and freshness !!!

Amazing. Best Chinese take away I have found our side of the city. Quick and friendly service. Will definitely visit Ginling again. ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺

Solid all round here, consistently serves up a high standard of food. We love Chinese and Ginling is now our go to place if we get the craving.

Food: outstanding! We have now had several dishes and can hardly fault any. Peking Duck and Salt and Pepper squid are the standouts! Serving sizes are large and prices reasonable. Eating in seems to give better taste and value for money.

Service: friendly staff and all work together and do the job well and very quickly. Restaurant was almost full and they had plenty of staff on to cope.

Decor is certainly not why people come to the venue. This isn't a big factor for me but if you're expecting a pretty little restaurant with fresh paint or a old traditional Chinese feel than Ginling will disappoint.

It used to be good and my family gets takeaway from here often. Recently, the food smells and tastes weird... smells like a different mix of food. Perhapa contaminated cooking oil? We got the honey chicken and soft shell crab tonight.. both aren't what they're meant to taste like.. :( bad enough we probably won't be back anytime soon.

Food is consistently flavorsome and tasty. Our main complaint for the night was that we didn't get given prawn crackers to start like the other tables, despite being regulars. If staff were more attentive, would have picked this up. Overall, a good feed and value for money.

Went there on Tuesday night there were two tables with diners. Got ourselves seated and ordered 3dishes to share which was a mistake as the portion sizes were HUGE. However Me and my hubby both have big appetites started to dig in and ended up with more than half left over. Not because it was too much but the dishes were either too salty or too bland there was no in between

I saw other reviewers describe this as reliable Chinese food, and I think that is an apt description. We popped in here for dinner and ordered the kang kung sambal (belacan), sizzling fish with ginger and stewed eggplant with pork mince.
The kang kung was a flavourful dish with the kang kung slightly overcooked, which is actually how I like it. I would rate this a 3.5.
The fish with ginger was a little light on the flavour side but went well with the kang kung and was quite a good dish and rated a 3.5.
The stewed eggplant was a little sweeter than I would have expected so I liked this dish less. It rated a 3.
Portion sizes were large and prices were reasonable. Staff were all friendly and helpful, more so than most Chinese restaurants I have been to.
Overall, quite a nice dining experience.

Tried this after being out of the area for a while, friendly, prompt service, nice and clean, very generous serves,Husband had sizzling Mongolian Beef, hot, hot, hot magic,my beef and cashew nuts 11 vegetables, not frozen like some places, too large for me to get through, scrumptious spring rolls.Beer and wine cheaper than hotels, will certainly be back soon.Parking is a bit of a bugger, shopping centre nearby is only option.Cheaper than an all you can eat at Charlies, and wasn't up and down all night.

Reliable take away chinese food. Sometimes they get the orders wrong for take away but always are humble and easy to fix problem. Prices are decent and serving sizes are very generous.

Reasonably well-priced and authentic Chinese food (for Adelaide standards). Friendly and warm service. It's popular and will get busy especially peak hours so you'll need a booking during those times. Not the best Chinese for me but wouldn't mind going if friends invite or for a change of scene.

I'm echoing everyone in saying... Grab the yellow menu! You'll such a huge (and much better) range of food to choose from. Ask if you're unsure of what they are. The white menu (how ironic if you ask me) doesn't offer much of a choice.

Ginling is like a wallflower - it blends in so well with the streetscape of Marion Road that you would never in a hundred years stop by and walk in. It's like a completely different world inside. Its old, brown brick exterior is not at all inviting, but open the doors and it's usually bursting full.

Service is good and food comes quick. It's also reasonably cheap. We got the Peking Duck in lieu of Chinese New Year and it was a standout. The duck is lovely and crispy and pancakes are thin and unobtrusive. Make sure you book a table and the Duck beforehand (yes, they need time to prepare the duck) to ensure you get what you want.

Simple, cheap Chinese food with quick service.

Westernised "Chinese". When you walk into a Chinese restaurant and there are spoons & forks on the tables - it's a worry.
Having read all the fabulous & positive reviews of Ginling we were looking forward to trying it.
It was a real disappointment.
The service was very average - lots of mistakes in our orders and very slow.
The food was - well, westernised Chinese, even though we ordered from the "Chinese" menu. There were groups of Asians eating which is usually a good sign - but not this time!
The pork ribs were thick with batter & covered in a sickly sweet sauce.
The greens were bitter & gritty - there's no excuse for bad preparation.
All over it lacked freshness & flavour.
The forks & spoons spelt a warning.

Best Chinese restaurant in the Southern suburbs. I went here for the first time recently for a friend's birthday. It is by far one of the best Chinese restaurants I have been to. The peking duck is amazing, in fact ALL of the dishes were just amazing! What I was really surprised at is that the owner was super friendly and funny. A friend bought in a cake, and I was pleasantly surprised that cutting and serving was all free too.

Will travel across town for this restaurant!. Good service, great food. Was introduced to this restaurant by a friend and have been back 4 times in 6 months, happy to travel from the eastern suburbs. Haven't had any dishes I didn't enjoy. Kid friendly and the duck is to die for. An instant favourite.
Can't Be Bothered To Cook
Seems quite popular but not sure why. Very synthetic sauces ... generally the same on on everything whatever the description. Meat quality hit and miss. Use to be cheap and cheerful, now just cheerful.
Not keen and probably will avoid in future
Alright
Good chinese. It's apparently under new management, but the food quality is essentially the same: pretty good. most dishes are balanced and flavoursome. sometimes dishes may be a bit too oily (fried rice and meat dishes) or salty, but overall consistent. great for slightly upper-middle priced chinese takeout or dinner. be wary of friday or thursday nights, wait on food may be a bit slow.

Good food!. The food is pretty good! If I had to nit pick, roast duck and fried rice needs improvement.

Delicious & large serves. Great place, tried it for takeaway they gave so much food all very fresh and delicious! We will be returning for good Chinese food again!

The best roast duck ! Make sure to order it! It's the roast duck with the bone. The dipping sauce is amazing! Long beans with sambal and pork mince also super good!

Best Chinese in Adelaide. Say no more. Seriously good food!

Another lovely meal at Ginling.
Restaurant was full, yet takeaway meals were still served promptly and the quality was the same as inhouse.

Bargain bargain bargain!. Here's the thing.

Last night took the family ( two adults, two teenagers) to BBQ City Gouger Street for a Meal. Excellent food, attentive service, brought home leftovers. Total cost $65 (including three soft drinks and a pot of tea)

Tonight on the way home stopped off at Ginling and ordered Spring Rolls, Chicken ad Corn Soup, Lemon Chicken, Chicken Chow Mein with crispy noodles, BBQ pork with plum sauce, steamed rice. Total price $44.bAnd they threw in free prawn crackers.

Was BBQ city better? Probably. Their vegetarian dumplings were great and the shredded duck with noodles a treat. Their Wonton soup was delicious.

Was Ginling $21 worse? Absolutely not. Tasty, fresh suburban Chinese.for 2/3 of the price. Get into it and fill your boots. As a Friday night takeaway it's pretty much ideal.

Eat in and thy've got "the special menu" of more authentic Chinese dishes.

I don't see how you can go wrong.

Amazing!!

A long loved restaurant. We have been coming here since we were kids and still return. The Chinese food here is some of the best in Adelaide although some of their best items are not on the English menu and only appear on the Chinese menu. The crispy skin chicken is always nice. As for noodles, you must try the prawn hor fun and the combination chow mein noodles. One of my favourite comfort foods! Having said that, the usual items on the English only menu are good too.

David. Great food , I will vote them for best Chinese food in Adelaide.

Had the chicken vegetables and the beef and cashews DELICIOUS.
Recommend this restaurant highly AAA+

This place is great! It has an Australasian menu & a Chinese menu with more different dishes! They have won awards for there duck & is my favorite! Also do seperate account which is helpful! Enjoy!

Am I missing something ???. Had a takeaway on Saturday 7th July, BBQ Pork with plum sauce, curried BBQ Pork and crispy chicken and large portion of rice. Discovered that each pork dish had FOUR pieces of thinly sliced pork the rest had been made up with vegetables !! I am sorry but that is disgusting for the price and feel ripped off. Obviously will not be going back for such poor value.

Service is super. Gotta order the duck!

Serving size and prices are decent. Fast and efficient service. Good westernised chinese food

Always a safe bet. Went here on my bucks night many years ago. For some reason they always remember me when I pop in ( hope I was not to rowdy !)

The Good:
Anything off the Chinese menu. The Ginling Duck is good

The Bad:
Can be a bit salty at times

Great Little Surprise. We decided to try this local place given that it is always packed. It was great! Good prices, friendly service and yummy food. Definitely give this place a try.

Love It. I have been going to this place for Chinese food for as long as i can remember and have never been disapointed. The place itself is always packed, so they must be doing something right. They have a very extensive menu that will suit any taste. Their garlic prawns and sizzling steak are a must try...

Crowded -hence must be good !. Yes, abit salty with taste of MSG but OK. nothing spectacular but food was well presented. if you like westernized chinese food this is the place for you

Decent takeaway. The service was quick - the food was ready before we got there even though we arrived before the food ETA. The serves were a good size and the food was tasty.

Ginling has been around for as long as I can remember and they make pretty good Chinese food. The restaurant is of a decent size and the interior is a bit outdated. The menu offers all your typical Chinese fare and I would say a lot of their clientele are local repeat customers. When I was there, the owner seemed to know everyone on a first name basis. Whenever I’m there I order the Crispy Chicken. When the chicken is fresh, the dish is fantastic! The chicken is moist and perfectly cooked. The skin is crispy and full of flavour. The dipping sauce is heavenly and makes the whole dish! I usually drown the chicken pieces into this sauce and eat away! It’s so good! Once every blue moon I might order the Roast Duck as well. It’s just as good but fatty. Roast Duck This place has been around for many years and there’s a reason why. They know how to cook Chinese food. Some of the favourite dishes I order can be hit and miss, but for the most part, they’re pretty good. WHERE: 609 Marion Rd, Sou

Is Ginling Chinese restaurant a contender for best suburban Chinese restaurant in Adelaide? The main reason we chose to visit Ginling was that despite neither Pete nor I ever hearing about it before it seemed to be the most popular restaurant near Hungry Pete and Ruby's new Warradale digs. First impressions were positive. When we arrived the restaurant was three quarters full, with a slight majority of diners of Asian background. Two menus were placed on the table, one of which was mainly Aussie-Cantonese in style and the other slightly more adventurous without being threatening for conservative eaters. Cool air-conditioning compared to the furnace outside and the conversations at nearby tables was a pleasant background hum. After ordering the food came out quickly. My favourite dish of the night, the chicken and salty fish fried rice. Salted fish fried rice is not something you'd see in many Adelaide suburban restaurants which generally come with a choice of steamed or 'special' fried
