Review Boatman's Fish & Chips - Portarlington

Ordered takeaway and were told to pick up in 10 minutes. We arrived in 7minutes. Order was ready and waiting when we arrives. Arrived home with order immediately after pick up and the chips were warm and soggy and the souvlaki’s were cold. How can that be???? No eftpos, cash only. They won’t see us back.

Great food, love the pumpkin cakes. Staff were polite and patient. Place was clean. Not badly priced for a fish n chip shop in Portarlington. Give this place a go. Recommended for all.

My husband and his disabled client went there for lunch. The biggest problem was no eftpos. That meant he had to take his client back out to get cash. Very inconvenient. Then they had to come back and pay for the order before they would even start cooking the food. This meant they had to wait longer for lunch. When the food came the portions were smaller than expected and getting tomato sauce was extra. They won't be going back. 2 stars is generous.

After being really dissatisfied with our local fish and chip shop, we thought we’d try Boatman’s when the family was down from Melbourne. Boatman’s was great! The fish was thick and not too oily. The chicken burger and the hamburger with the lot was old school and delicious. The chips , dim sims and potato cakes were good too. $54 to feed a family of four was very reasonable. The service was fast and friendly too. Highly recommended for locals and tourists, we’ll be back again, thank you!

Went on a Sunday around lunch time. Delicious and crispy chips!! Flake was slightly oily but flavour still great!

Very disappointing from a fishing town. $2.50 scallops were battered and then not even real scallops. Punch-outs from some sort of fish. Whiting was thin, tiny and flavourless. Chips and calamari rings were the best part of the meal although the crumbs on the calamari was so spicy you couldn’t really taste what it was like.

Awful customer service. 20c for a wedge of lemon to have with my fish and chips. Had already spent $40.40. Cash only too. Would recommend to nobody.

Aside from not having eftpos facilities which is paramount these days (owners really need to this sorted out ASAP) the food was great and very well cooked. The shop is extremely clean and tidy, service and staff were also organised and professional. Just get an eftpos and you’ll start ticking full stars !!

Alright potato cakes and good battered flake. We also enjoyed the pineapple fritters. Shame about the short stumpy and yellow looking chips that really tasted so meh I don’t think I would return for. Not even sure chicken salt would cure them. Disappointed... and to think this was the busier of the two F@C shops in town.

The chips and the batter are fresh and crispy. But the fish, scallops, and calamari tasted fishy and not fresh. There were enough seats and service was friendly.

I ordered a grilled flake and potato cake from boatmans today for dinner and was totally appalled by how small these items were (photos below) the grilled flake was also tasteless and so thin that it was dried out. The potato cake was about 5cm wide and the smallest potato cake I have ever had. This restaurant is a total rip off! Defiantly won't be returning!

I prefer this one ......<br/><br/>There are two Fish and Chips shops on the main esplanade of Portarlington.<br/><br/>This is my favourite in terms of quality and taste, even at $10.50 for a serve of Fish & Chips. Cooked well and not oily. Their family owned and run "youthful" looking shop is also clean and neat.<br/><br/>But not for service and eating in; very small area, just do take away, plenty of benches on the beachfront just across the street.<br/><br/>Don't event bother expecting some enthusiasm nor smile and don't even brother to asks to use their power point to charge your flat mobile phone after that 3 hr Drive from Melbourne.
