Review India House - Prahran

Hungry
Amazing! For a restaurant that I have walked past so many times and there is never anyone in it, I was very surprised when I ordered takeaway from here. Everything was delicious and it was probably the best Indian food I have had in a very long time. Will definitely be ordering here on the regular moving forward!

Very good Indian restaurant! Always fresh and quality ingredients used. Good size servings, reasonably priced and delicious tasting food to get your mouth buds watering. Owners and staff are particularly friendly and always accommodating. No hestitation in recommending India house!

If your looking for that authentic tandoori taste with your Indian, this is the place for you. The Burra Kebab & Chicken on the Tandoori Platter had so much taste Also, highly recommend the Goat Curry, the goat is still on the bone which adds to the taste experience The service is excellent and very friendly, had a great chat with the owner who catered for our needs in every way

I have been to India House Restaurant a few times with my husband and we absolutely love it! Delicious Indian food and reasonably priced. Family business - we were served by the mother and the son who were both very welcoming and lovely. We also get takeaway sometimes which is great. Highly recommended.

food was pretty good as all other review say after reading and tried their food first time as takeaway. However the man served me picking up the food wasn't that friendly, no greeting no smiling that surprised me as normally customer service in Indian restaurants are nice. Probably because wearing masks? Oh just also wished them filled fully the pickles. Was just about half of it only(´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥`)

Have been to the restaurant a couple of times. Great tasty food and reasonably priced. Will take utmost care to check if you are happy with the food, they also give some extras like papad to start off, which is a good touch. Very neat and presentable ambience. Loved the experience !

Curry was okay, a bit watery. Rice was very watery - is it that hard to serve fully cooked, drained rice? Fine for white people who don't know what the authentic flavours taste like. Furthermore, the owner was condescending and rude. Would NOT recommend. Spend your money elsewhere.

After nearly 25 years of patronage finally writing review. 5 stars are not enough !!! Never have we left either hungry or disappointed. Wonderful family restaurant, exceptional quality food, best Indian food we have ever eaten. Great service, great food 10 out of 10

Great overall experience - friendly and helpful over the phone for delivery as I didn’t know how much to order. Very happy with all the dishes we ordered - kids loved the butter chicken and garlic naan - husband loved veggie korma and I loved the saag paneer. The chicken was maybe a touch dry but it was great cut (white chicken) and the sauce made up for it - delicious!

Beautiful little cosy Indian restaurant owned by super nice & kind family. As far as I remember, been running here on High street since the 70's. It feels like you are at home eating in this cozy restaurant. Thanks for the delicious food guys
Sue
Good Indian that does a very good butter chicken with lots of chicken. Not the cheapest Indian you will find but the food is great with no issues.

The best indian place in the north eastern outer suburbs area food is amazing and very reasonably priced also their hours are great open much later than most other places the biryani is a must!!

It’s been almost a year since we’ve been here and nothing has changed.

I love a Butter Chicken... but their chicken was super dry this time.

The redeeming factor... that naan bread and sauce from the aforementioned meal. It’s outstanding.

I don’t know maybe I’m weird soaking naan in butter chicken sauce but heck. It was so good!

Visited this place in the previous week only. This is one of the best property of. The food was great and the drinks too. We ordered some of their specialities like tandoori platter and chicken makhani which is the best item in main course. The ambience and atmosphere is too good her. They also serve beer. Overall a must recommended place 👍

Quite full on a Monday night, so I expected better...especially at $29 for two small tubs of vegetarian curries for takeaway, which was ready in 10 minutes. The quantity was surprisingly small for that price. Malai kofta with peas, and kofta with potato skins on...ever heard of that concoction before? The dal makhni was the weakest I've had in Melbourne. Prahran folks love it enough for 3.7? I'm speechless...could be for speed and service.

First time customer of India House. We ordered buttet chicken and goat curry. Was very timely, ready for pick up in 15 mins. Friendly service. Chicken was quite sweet and goat did not have much flavour and was quite fatty. For the price I think there are better Indian restaurants in the area.

This is the best Indian in melbourne! My husband and I have been coming here for over 5 years and never walked away disappointed. The food is good quality and very hospitable, friendly staff.
Katie Bridget
Amazing food! All staff are so friendly and are always incredibly accommodating. I let staff know I was vegan and they asked the chef to make special vegan naan bread for me. I have been telling everyone about the amazing food and wonderful service!
Best Indian food we have had in a long time! We have made this place our regular Indian!
AdamEats
Garlic Naan bread was the best i've ever eaten. And the waitress had no dramas making it dairy free. Heaps of vegan curries, i had the mushroom and pea and it was damn tasty. Thanks guys!

Came here for dinner with a group of friends - impeccable service and the food was absolutely amazing!
The lamb chops were cooked to perfection and the meat was full of smoky flavours and tender.
In addition havent been able to stop raving about the naans - appears to be cooked in a proper charcoal fired oven - not the gas stuff most of the other indian places use.
Would highly recommend this place to any fans of indian food - the food and the friendly service will blow you away!!

I had a takeaway from uber eats. I had the saab panner, garlic naan and chicken biryani. I could not understand how this got 3.7. Coz I paid 40aud for my food. And seriously I wouldn't even pay 10aud for the quality of food that I had.
K.Ross
Terrible, would not recommend to anyone, had takeaway and was not able to tell the difference between the tikka masala and a vindaloo, they both tasted had the same tomato paste taste with a lot of garlic, only difference was one of them was inedibly salty. Naan bread was soggy and full of garlic bits....absolutely terrible, never again.

I would not recommend this place. Compated to other Indian spots in Melbs it was sub par. Food just wasn't appetising at all. Curry was watery, bland and big dry chunks of meat. Very disappointing
EL
Some seriously amazing curries!
Servings are fairly decent. Not too small or too huge. Very nice staff and friendly. Helped with recommendations. I will certainly come back here.

I have been a regular at this Indian restaurant fro the last 10 years. This is a pretty low key type of place. Great food, great service. I enjoy the starters samosa and pakoras and love the mains- I generally have Tandoori. Tried many places- this is the best and has BYO wine.

Mike

I have been coming back to this restaurant for over 15 years and it continues to surprise. Food is superlative and service charming. Just enjoyed a spicy prawn Masala with fluffy fresh rice and a soft unbuttered Naan bread and an excellent red from the upgraded wine list. Could not fault. I'll be back again!
Food quality and service from this family owned restaurant is always of a high standard and tonight was no exception. Great Prawn Masala, Vegetable Biryani and Saag Paneer!
Hritik Singh
Great little restaurant which serves delicious Indian food. The lamb chops and seekh kebabs are one of the best I have had. Their garlic nan is just perfect. Butter chicken had the right flavour, pretty close to what we get back home in Delhi. All this topped up with chilled kingfisher on tap. Highly recommended.
Amy Cochrane
Had to pay for a curry we didn't even touch as it tasted like tomato soup. No flavour or spice! Tried to make it seem like our fault for not specifying spice when we didn't even get an option. I would not go back here again especially after having to pay for it after such a bad experience. I have never felt the need to write a bad review before but I have had many curries and that was awful and I never want to be in such an awkward situation again where I feel the need to say that the food is just not acceptable.
Mindy
The best indian food in Melbourne. I wish I'd come here sooner! We ordered a variety of dishes and every mouthful was delicious, fresh and full of flavour. The staff genuinely cared about our dining experience and treated us like family. Will be making this place a regular!

This place took our fancy over Zomato with its 4.1 star rating, and didn't stop impressing us all night. Personable service, fresh ingredients, home made everything (we mean everything) and food to die for. If you are looking for authentic Indian cuisine and personable service from the owners themselves then this is the place to go!

A hidden gem on a not so hidden street! This indian restaurant is a must try for someone in or nearby the area. One of the finest, I have been to in Melbourne. Food was excellent. For starters, we had the Aloo tikki chaat (it was the best I have had in melbourne). We also had a shared tandoori platter ( i could only get Lamb chop and seekh kabab) no complaints as loved my entree's to the core. For mains, we had the aloo gobhi (a popular dish from back home), chicken acchari and the daal. The naan bread and parantha's were to die for. For dessert we had the gulab jamun (an excellent choice which was very delicious). Overall, a great decent place to go out with great ambience and even better hosts.
April_eats
Best Indian takeaway! The menu caught my eye straight away when it says chicken breast used in the curries! Everything was really tasty, best onion bajhis. The only disappointment was the rice, bit overcooked but it wouldn't put me off ordering here again
James Comer
Disappointing curry. Lacked depth of flavour. Chicken was dry and was obviously not cooked in the sauce the whole time. Dry chicken breast covered in plain watery sauce sums it up well. Will not be eating here again.

OMG. Why did I wait so long! Wonderful moist chicken tikka, sensational currys and divine dahl with extra spice. The family who own this restaurant are friendly and professional and India House is a pleasure in every way.

Indian House is great we have been going for many years. The service is amazing and the food is authentic. It's a great family restaurant and also personal for a romantic night. Food is fantastic best Indian in Melbourne. Enjoy!! 👍
Colin Holland
Food and service is fantastic, especially the goat curry and the tandoori prawns. Very friendly service, and they gave us good recommendations for dishes. Ambience is intimate, and very good for a date with my beloved, and her daughter.
Olivia
India house is great food, service is great I especially love there great tasting Curries. Great selection to choose from, very nice little restaurant that I think every One should definitely give a try!
Julian
India House is a great little restaurant on High Street. Primarily for the friendliness of the staff and authenticity and taste of the food. I've been to India many times and coming to this restaurant always gives me a bit of nostalgia when I talk to the staff and eat the food. It's family run, genuine and wholesome and always good for a family meal! Worth a look.
Greg Knappstein
India House is delicious! We have been coming here for 7 years and it never fails to deliver wonderful flavour! As vegans we are spoilt! Highly recommend for authentic Indian cuisine. Service is great!

BIG FLAVOUR BIG VALUE!

Unlike alot of other Indian restaurants that are fitted out for take away, this place has a classy edge with big glass front and fully set tables.

The beef madras, which had a deep flavour and just the right amount of spice. I'm asian but don't normally prefer spice but can take it and it wasn't that spicy.

Chicken mahkani, had big lovely chunks of chicken breast, and although I'm usually a dark meat girl, the breast was still tender.

Tofu saag was bit milder in flavour but still lovely.

My picture did not do the tandoori platter justice. 2 lamb chops, 2 huge boneless chicken tikka pieces, two tandoori chicken pieces on the bone, and two lamb kebabs all on a sizzling plate for $24 was a steal!

We ordered both garlic naan and roti just to see the difference. Garlic naan was alot better. I was kind of expecting roti like how the Maylasians do it, but it was more like wheat pita bread toasted. Naan was more buttery and bready.

Lastly service was impeccable, Samir our waiter is a legend.

Oh and they have Kingfisher beer on tap... what more can you want!
Ryan Mackay
Friendly staff, always greeted with a smile. Happy to suggest dishes if you're an amateur and turn up the heat if you want it hot.

Had the Aloo Tikka Chaat, Lamb Saagwala, Butter Chicken and a hot beef vindaloo. Usual sides of rice and nan. Had another lamb dish which I wish we could remember the name of. All were great, personal favorite was the vindaloo, especially if you like spicy curry.

Oh and the kingfisher on tap was the perfect recommendation by the waiter to accompany the meal.
Rachel Drysdale
Best Indian food ever!! Just follow the recommendations from the friendly staff and you can't go wrong! We keep coming back over and over again... :)

Decent local Indian restaurant - we went a chicken tikka ( chicken was touch on the dry side), vegetable vinadloo (tasty!) , garlic naan and basmati rice. Overall the food was fine and well priced but nothing I'd rave about. Waiter was great, had some good gags for my mate who couldn't handle the heat.

Very highly recommended. I have been a regular at India House for years and for good reasons. This is as close as it gets to authentic North Indian food. To say that it is excellent, would be an understatement.

What I particularly love about India House is the consistency of their great food quality and their gracious service, which evidently comes from decades of relevant experience.

India House is unbeatable at what they promise to deliver - exceptional North Indian food, with the style, simplicity and substance that only they know how to combine. Bravo.

AMAZING FOOD!!!! Finally after years of living in South yarra we found the hidden gem! Fresh food, beautiful service and overall a wonderful experience. I am so so glad I found this place- 10/10

Excellent food...been there twice this week and not disappointed at all. Tried there mango lassi which was very refreshing and kingfisher beer on tap with garlic chicken proved to be an amazing combination. The food quality is consistent with great taste.I feel that I have found an authentic indian restaurant. The ambience is very relaxing and calm.

This place has never let me down after several visits, delicious entrees & mains, Aloo Tikka Chat & Beef Jalfrezy divine. Throw in lovely service and Kingfisher Beer to keep you smiling!

100% My Favourite. Food is delicious, haven't tasted anything I don't like! Love the Aloo Tikki Chaat. Always great service, always flavoursome meals. Great family owned restaurant, and they really make my children feel welcome.
Fat Amy
My Favourite. Having tried lots of Indian cuisine in my area, India House is the best by far. Mains may be $2 more than some places but 100% worth it. The Butter Chicken is rich & creamy with juicy pieces of chicken. I haven't eaten in yet, just takeaway & delivery.
Rjerrington
Great Indian. We lived around the corner from these guys for nearly a year, definitely our favorite weekend dinner date. Nice fqmily run place, their whole menu is fantastic - favorites are the butter chicken and everything on the entree menu!

Great food, good value and fab service. This is a local restaurant we visit regularly. We love the food and the friendly attentive service. The goat is just delicious and we find it is great value.
George
Great sit-down restaurant with excellent service. Our favourites are the rich butter chicken and tasty Peshawari naan
Jay
Amazing Indian!! Rated as one of my best feeds!
Totoro
Great food!. Came here with a group of 9, ordered about 10 different dishes and they were all great! the garlic naan and the mango lassi were especially delicious !

The waiter was really nice, I would rate the customer service 5/5! \

I would definitely go back
Dig92
Very nice! Service was awesome, only thing I could say is that it might have been easier for the waiter tonight if there was an extra person but he did an awesome job. Food was really nice (butter chicken), layout and decor is good and the mango lasa drink is something to come for. Overall very pleased
Charlie
My new favorite. Very nice ppl that are just happy to make good food. Service is great.
Catherine Osborne Ritchie
Absolutely delicious - best Indian food we've had outside of India ! Authentic, very good value, and very friendly service.
James Sims
Best Indian in Melbourne by far ! Flavor, quality of meat and friendly services all excellent! Don't get indian good anywhere else or you will simply be disappointed!

Even English curry lovers will be pleased!
Sam
Favourite Indian. Have been going here for years, delicious... Lovely service from the lovely family owner / operators. Definitely start with the Aloo Tikka Chat - soft potato small pancake type dumpling with delicious spices and yoghurt......
Anja_grant
Anja. Such delicious, fresh and tasty food. Great to dine in with the most charming, hospitable service and always good take away - fast and really yummy food. How spoilt!
Keegan Hodge
My partner and I eat there all the time, it's beautiful they even import a special basmati rice from India, it's all quality, do yourself a favour and head there!
Tracey Wiseman
Came in a Sunday night, lovely service by owner lady who made a special effort to ask the chef to make the dish hotter. The place us clean and nice to dine - not a fan of the disposable table cover but the food is good so will be back!
John Smith
I love this place. The butter chicken is the business.
Peter Day
Absolutely fantastic. ive been enjoying their food for many years and it is consistantly delicous. seriuosly, you wont find better anywhere. their charcoal tandoori is sensational and the goat curry is amazing. and the foods not expensive either .
Robert Chomaniuk
The consistent quality of India House food is I keep coming back for. Have been coming here for many years and although this place has a bustling take away business, the friendliness of the staff and the service is something you miss out on unless you come in. They have the only charcoal tandoor in these parts, just that makes them stand out from the rest. Have recommended it to many friends who have recommended it to theirs. Will be back real soon.
D_Bizz
Bland, below average Indian. Tried India House due to the high rating and reviews this restaurant had received, however my experience was incredibly disappointing.
Ordered the Fish curry, which had absolutely no flavour, not even a hint of spice. I had to cover the meal with mango chutney to wake my taste buds from their coma.
Garlic naan was doughy and also lacked any form of flavour.
Vegetable samosa was however excellent.
Cecilia Epic Le
Visited this cosy restaurant with a group of friends - service was amazingly prompt and friendly, and every dish that came to the table was tender and full of flavour. Peshawari Nan and Chicken Tikka Jalfrezy are a must try! Best North Indian restaurant in Melbourne! :)
Michael
Review. Wrong order was delivered which we weren't too concerned about. Wrong order was then amended by delivery man coming back on his own volition to compensate us with half a tandoori chicken which was fantastic. Amazing delivery service and fantastic food!
Daniel Martini
The best Chicken Tikka I have ever had at an Indian restaurant.
Wilson
Saag paneer is delicious here, our favourite local take out Indian. Good garlic naan too.
MancinMelb
It was ok. I have had worse Indian food but then I have had a lot better! I really liked the naan bread though.
MyMonkeyRules
Nice. Wonderful Indian food matched by smooth polite service.
Highly desirable eat out.
Lisamavr
Great local. Butter chicken and lamb saag are always impressive. Naan bread is also excellent.
May
This is a nice local restaurant, not too formal. Some of the best items on the menu are the Kashmiri Naan, the Butter Chicken, and the Chicken Tikka Masala. The biggest surprise is the Gulab Jamun; I expected it to be too sweet but it was delicious! Glad to be able to come back here regularly again now that the restaurant has re-opened after renovations.
Shraddha Khetwani
Love the biryani.
Matt
Bland. Got takeaway from this restaurant tonight.
Really good website with loads of information and well set out. The curries were priced a little high but we wanted to treat ourselves to quality Indian food so were willing to pay. The two curries were bland at best, they tasted like the sauce was bought at the supermarket.....where is the spices, flavour and freshness???
Another point the containers you get the food in is small, don't expect large portions of food here.

With the amount of choice for takeaway and in particular Indian food in Melbourne, you can get better quality and better price elsewhere.
Josh H
Absolutely awful. I ordered takeaway from this place and it was absolutely awful. The two curries I ordered had the thinnest, most watery sauce I've ever seen. It was as if they'd got a jar of pre-mixed sauce out of the supermarket and watered it down, then poured it on top of some tough bits of beef and chicken. Bought about $40 worth of food and it all went in the bin after half a dozen mouthfuls.

For the first time in my life I actually called up a takeaway place to complain. I wondered if the regular chef was off sick and they had some kid filling in, but no, I was assured that this was the food produced by their regular full time chef. Considering the enormous choice in Indian restaurants in this city (many of which produce pretty decent food), I'd say: stay well clear of this place!!
Erin
One of the best Indian restaurants I have been to. Service is always flawless. Of all the Indian restaurants we have eaten at, India House undoubtably has the best tasting and best quality food. Great value for money, and whether we eat in or take-away the service is fast and friendly!!! Love it!
Bowza1000
India House. Firstly, to go so far as to say "this is Melbourne's best Indian", is simply misleading. I would say it's "not bad".

PROS: Good location. Prompt and friendly service. Good quality chicken. Well priced.

CONS: Very thin sauces. Frozen (not fresh) veggies in dishes. Sauces all very similar and don't taste home made - they could be better.

Long story short; If you're just after an Indian 'fix', this place will do, but if you want to be treated, take the extra few minutes and go to Curry Leaf, in St Kilda.
Rob
If you are looking for Melbourne's best Indian food then go no further than India House. The food is cooked superbly, and the flavours come from fresh ingredients prepared by the most delightful hostess in any restaurant that I have visited. She is reason enough to eat at this establishment. Crisp white table cloths and a stylish decor are very inviting. The menu is extensive, the prices are highly competitive and the service faultless. A must visit....
Mariana
Good local. We've been here 5 or 6 times and it's always good. We live close so it's very handy. Can often be quiet, but the take away is always busy, so people do like it. I especially love the Naan bread with the sultanas and cashews, I have to have it every time.
Briancohen
Once was great, authentic, fresh. Now you can easily do better at home. Too much cost cutting and contempt for loyal patrons over past two years. No stars.
