Review Wasshoi - Prahran

Pauline Heng
delicious grilled to order tender meat on crispy tiger bread rolls. The beef brisket is especially good, I would also recommend getting their yuzu drink.

$8 sake of the month was godly and a big pour too. The pork belly don was amazing, but a bit strange that lettuce was used. Miso soup also tasty. Very good fitout and bar at Prahran market. Recommend!
Vanessa K
I was recommended to try this place because I was told the pork belly was amazing and they were right. The twice cooked pork belly don was so delicious, the twice cooked pork belly was so tender and flavoursome.
Steven Young
Holy smokes! The beef brisket roll is next level tasty!! So much flavour going on, the meat is super tender and the bread is soft inside with a thin crusty layer outside. Amazing!!!
Anne Nuguid
This was a really lovely experience! I can't remember the name of my dish, the beef was tender and tasty and plenty of flavours in the bowl worked really well. My partner ordered the sake, the guy who who explained the bottles was awesome and the sake itself was so smooth, something really special. This place far surpassed my expectations, restaurant quality in the middle of the market. Amazing

10/10 The food was amazing. The staffs were super nice. We had the pork belly rice and yuzu lemonade. Definitely would recommend. 👍👍
Katina Sahara
The meat in the don here was absolutely fantastic and the flavours were perfectly balanced. The staff work in a very fast manner and the open kitchen was insanely clean at all times - impressive! The yuzu juice was fantastic too and great value in the meal deal.
Andrew Taylor
The pork belly rolls and the brisket rolls are ridiculously good. You can grab a beer and sit at the bar and have the best lunch ever while doing your shopping at the market. This place is the best.
Michael Maher
The flavour mix is amazing. Charcoal grilled pork belly; drizzled in a sauce that includes apple, pear, sake & soy sauce; in a roll or on rice. Yum.
Gavin McMillan
So good, the Pork Belly rice bowl was the best!!! will definitely stop by when back in Melbourne.
Caroline Jane
I love this place so much. The pork belly roll and the yuzu juice are the best!!!
Glenn Snelling
Really like the Yuzu juice. Great atmosphere and tasty pork belly.
Rachel Gillon
We had lunch with you today and your food is DELICIOUS! Loved the Pork Don and the chicken soup, the Pork belly bun and topped off with a very kind complimentary Yuzu juice, you guys are fantastic, we will be back
Jen Luong
Twice cooked pork belly bun ❤ definitely coming back to try the chicken! Yuzu drink is really awesome too!

Pork Belly was perfectly grilled, taste good, but just too overly sweet.
$16.00 for takeaway is a bit steep, for two pieces of Pork belly, rice and lettuce.

Twice cooked pork belly roll. Nuff said.
(... okay the Cannoli is not theirs. But its close by =P)

Wasshoi prahran- Located in prahran Market within its own booth, Wasshoi offers Japanese style rice bowls and rolls with its meats grilled charcoal style. Good service and food was prompt despite attracting large crowds especially during lunch hours. Price is reasonably cheap for Japanese food. Beef tsukune don- hamburg style beef doused in fruit soy sauce. Delicious, beef and tofu patty bursting was soft and full of flavour. Fruit soy sauce complemented it well, but perhaps too much sauce and overly sweet to appreciate the flavour of the patty itself. Mayonaisse was on lettuce but would've been much better on the patty itself. Homemade kimchi on itself was tasteless but was refreshing when eaten together with the patty.

Twice cooked pork belly- effortlessly soft, beautifully layered pork. Charcoal flavour much more evident. Again the sweetness of the sauce blanketed flavours of the charcoal on the pork and the addition of Mayonaisse would have been nice. Overall still very delicious.

I could see myself eating this for lunch regularly if I was around the area, price is reasonable for serving size and quality.
4/5, Little tweaks can see the dishes elevated to a 5/5. Will be back to see how their rolls fare.

Super tasty rolls, pork belly was amazing. Yuzu juice is great. Well worth a visit

Excellent long cooked beef & pork, innovative cuisine from Japan! Relies on its strengths with a limited menu made of all their top specialties.
A must do in Prahran

A great little spot in Prahran market. Their menu is small and they have a simple offering - Japanese-style grilled meats in rolls or dons.

I like that the menu is not over-complicated and everything is delicious. The meats are always grilled to perfection and the sauces are delicious. They also have lovely Yuzu juice or Orion tap beers, which perfectly compliment the food!

Literally the best pork belly don ever, juicy and tender meat with their special sauce, so tasteful and not salty at all. The chicken don also very good
Picky Pika
So I want to like this place, the staff are cute and lovely. Also, the sauce and overall taste is so good!

But... my partner had the chicken bowl but the portion is so small, I feel can get alot more elsewhere for $12. Somehow there's a fair bit of meat but barely any rice. (which seems silly when it's the cheap part) He is still hungry after.. We quite gutted since we're on a budget.

I had the chicken roll, actually pretty yum and the bread is nice and crisp n everything. But.. I'm so dissapointed as I found small hair not on the food but actually baked into the outer of the roll.
So i cant return coz of the incident, although so rare, it really puts me off.. Also the portion isnt enough for my boyfriend..

Try it and you will love it - the Twice cooked pork belly was the star of my lunch. Tender, fragrant and flavourful, if you love pork belly this is a dream comes true. My friend had the Twice cooked chicken don which was also mouth watering. Don’t forget a yuzu juice to finish the meal. My only complain is the heavy use of plastic containers and utensils; next time I will definitely try the beef tsukune and yakiniku!
Tinmans Treats
An underrated gem in Prahran market is this Japanese yakatori bar. I had the twice cooked pork belly roll with a yuzu juice to wash it down. Love love loved it! If you love pork belly then you have to try this place. Tender, juicy, sweet, flavourful pork belly. I have nothing bad to say about this place at all. Order a roll, sit on one of the stools, and enjoy the greatness that is Wasshoi.

This place is located in Prahran market. Very good food and the service is friendly!! quick and very tasty!! oishikatta desu. arigoto gozaimasita kin-san!!

I work in South Yarra and would come here for a bowl of nice grill chicken over rice. It’s well marinated and full of juicy chicken & teriyaki flavour once charcoal grilled. Love it, my favourite
Trevor Johnston
[Rated 4.5] I love this place.

From its location within the market, the flavours and the simple menu, everything feels authentically Japanese. I love sitting on the stools with an ice cold Orion draft beer with lunch, watching the market buzz around me.

I have had most things on the menu and in my opinion you can't go wrong, recently I had the beef brisket which had a great charcoal grill flavour and marinade. Serving sizes are perfect for lunch.

Correction to the listing here on Zomato: Wasshoi is cash only.

Ordered the Twice Cooked Pork Belly Bun Roll which consisted of a 10 hour slow cooked and charcoal grilled pork belly, fresh salad, kochi yuzu pepper mayonnaise, home made kim chi & spice with fruit soy sauce. This roll was a tad pricey but boy it was a superb roll, the pork belly melts in the mouth and has a very nice glaze sauce on the meat, the fresh salad was lettuce and coriander, mayonnaise was fresh and peppery and the kim chi was delicious. This roll with a beer would be the ultimate feed. The menu is very limited but the food was absolutely delicious. Will come back
Laurence Song
Quick and simple Japanese street food, not many choices but simply delicious. Staff are friendly and speedy service as well. Must try Kochi Yuzu drink, both hot & cold are nice. Will try the rolls next time.

I haven’t been to Prahran Markets in a very long time so I called in to see what’s new.

It was mid afternoon and the markets were reasonably busy when I saw this place selling Yuzu.

At Wasahoi they serve the traditional drink from Japan is called Yuzu which is a sweet lemon drink served hot in winter or cold in summer.

This is really refreshing and whilst a little sweet, it had a delicious natural lemon flavour. Perfect!

The sign said 1 size only which was fine but I personally don’t like styrofoam cups, so I drank it pretty quickly.

So if it’s practical I’d recommend taking you own keep cup or the styrofoam just ends up in the bin. What an environmental waste.

Perfect place to sample some wholesome Japanese cuisine in the bustling Prahran markets. Wasshoi is fully licensed. And the staff are more than happy to cater to your dietary needs. I recommend the Chicken Fillet Don and a sake.

WHAT! Another place in Prahran!?! Yes… we’ve been coming here a lot, and loving Prahran Market. We were at Pino’s Fine Produce for some fruits and veggies. A quick plug for these guys, $15 for a box of fruit and veggies on Sunday. There’s a nice variety to choose from, just make sure you don’t fill your box with watermelon!

The twice cooked pork belly don is very delicious. The pork belly is smoky, juicy and tender. The hot yuzu beverage compliments the pork belly well. The stall is surrounded with stools and you can see how your food is cooked. The ambience is cosy and clean.
Split The Bill
In the middle of Prahran market is this yakitori bar. it's bar seating in a square with all patrons able to see the staff at work making lunches for the masses. ive had the twice cooked pork belly roll and the chicken don. Both were delicious. The staff were extremely friendly too and they say goodbye in true Japanese fashion. Fun casual market dining but it's tasty Japanese style food. A must visit when you're in Prahran Market.

Food: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
We ordered twice cooked pork belly roll and it was SO good. The pork belly was soft, juicy and well flavoured and we were given a generous amount of meat in our meal. The roll was also soft and enjoyable. This combination melted in our mouths.

Service: n/a

Price: 🌟🌟🌟.5
Reasonably well priced at $10.5 for the roll with a short wait time. As expected, this stall was cash only.
Limited options but reasonable for a food stall. Dishes were nice enough with the nice ambience of a busy market. One thing is not too good that they don’t do card payments.
Celia
I came here alone on a weekday and it wasn't too busy. The staff work right in front of you and that's usually fine but one thing happened... So they were dealing with a big bag of meat right in front of me and a few specks of sauce flew onto my face...they didn't realise but it was a bit awkward. Other than that, the service was great, they're all very polite.

I had a tsukune don and it had this lovely sauce on the beef patty which was soft and well seasoned. The rice was consistent. The highlight though i think is the yuzu juice, very refreshing and not too sweet.
Jack
Severely underrated! Delicious, healthy, authentic (no really!) Japanese cuisine. Strongly recommend giving it a look when you're having a stroll in Prahran Market.
Foodme
Wasshoi is an unpretentious Japanese food stall set up in the centre of the Prahran market complete with super efficient and friendly staff.

Five pork belly rice bowls were ordered the moment we found available seats, and within minutes (possibly seconds) of being set down they were demolished. The pork belly just melts in your mouth. Wow. WOW. 😍

They also serve a refreshing yuzu juice. I just wish it was cold!
Jackzhu1123jz
I had the slow cooked pork bun and the slow cooked chicken bun, they were both so amazing. The flavourings and the coleslaw inside combined the flavourings of the meat so well. The bread was not fresh tho because it was a bit tough but all together it was a pretty good experience
Patricia
I had the twice cooked pork belly. First it was sous vide then grilled on the habachi grill. So juicy, tender and a touch of sweetness and heat from the spices. The yuzu juice complemented the dish very well.
Flying Forward
Points for: the smokey charcoal grilled chicken, value.

It's a pretty straight-forward menu - beef, chicken or pork on a crusty baguette or rice. Unfortunately there are no vegetarian options, which is a shame for the locals - I think even a tofu option would fare well.

Tsukune Beef Don - interesting that some tofu is mixed in with the beef mince, because the texture is quite soft and mushy. Quite a thick patty though and on top of plain rice and a standard salad of iceberg lettuce and sliced tomato. The kimchi is very light in flavour, I think the Japanese don't prefer it so pungent and spicy.

Chicken Fillet Don - First bite of the tender chicken though you get the hit from the smokey charcoal grill. Really good flavour and the chicken is quite juicy still, as it's a thigh piece. This would be killer in the crusty baguette

Ambience is very lively, you get the crowds from the market and all the Japanese staff bustling around.

No. of Visit: 4
#QuickEat
#if I'm in Prahran
This is my go-to place if I just need a quick fix for lunch. They offer both rice and baguette but I believe rice better suits the dishes. Top preference is TWICE-COOKED PORK BELLY DON.

Wasshoi is in the middle section of Prahran market (quite easily missed). I also love their drink combo deal.
We went there yesterday for the first time and it took us a bit to get a seat-seems popular-or there aren't many other places to eat at the market- either way, we ordered pork belly with rice for $13. The place was not run efficiently at all and it took such a LONG TIME before we got our meal- I even got frustrated just watching them fluffing around .....I must admit though, the bork belly was REALLY nice, awesome charcoaled pork with very tasty sauce, but.....that's all. 2 short slices of pork and ice burg lettuce covering the rice. Too expensive for what it is- if you finish your pork, you are just left with big amount of lettuce with a bit of mayo on top with rice underneath😶

It was my first time stepping into Prahan market. I didn't get to explore the rest of the market but I was really hungry and had to get something quick before my appointment. Wasshoi was the first eatery that I saw and I ordered their Japanese Style Beef Tsukune Don. It was limited to 10 per day and I thought that if it was only sold in limited quantities, it must be really good. To be honest, it wasn't as great as I had expected and I should have ordered their pork belly instead. Service was alright, nothing spectacular and I found it was a bit slow considering it was fast food. The yuzu juice was amazing though!
YuXia
I ordered a pork belly roll. The bread is neither too hard nor too soft. And the pork belly inside is fat and soft. But the pork belly is over cooked and burned. Therefore, sometimes the roll is bitter. Also, the taste of the pork belly is too plain. Compare with the price, $10, I personally think it is not worth.

If you didn't already know about Wasshoi, you probably wouldn't find it unless you went deep into Prahran Market and stumbled across it. It's planted in the middle of the jumble of stalls. It took me a fair bit of time to find it (having never been to this market before), and I probably wouldn't have if there wasn't an information booth handy. I ordered the twice cooked charcoal grilled pork belly, the option where it's served with rice. It had lovely charred flavour, and this combined with the sticky sweet sauce was really great. It was served with some salad as well, which was covered in some nice yuzu pepper mayonnaise. At $13, the portion size wasn't filling, and I think 80% of people would likely agree. Hence, I thought it was a little pricey, but not overly so considering the quality. My partner ordered the beef tsukune in the same style with rice and salad. The beef tsukune didn't hit the palate right for us, as we were expecting some yummy charred cuts of meat. In actual fact, it came as a meat patty which didn't give off much charcoal flavour, and was probably so finely ground that the texture wasn't that "rough" kind of meaty, but more like that of meatloaf. If we had known, we definitely would have gone for the chicken instead. We also ordered a yuzu juice and a yuzu chandy. The ratio of the chandy was more in favour if the beer, which I didn't mind, but personally I would have preferred the ratio shifted more the other way. The yuzu juice was pretty sweet, so we ended up mixing it with the chandy after a while.
A great place for a quick bite, but expect a queue and a 20-25 min wait on weekends and peak meal times. No photo of the pork unfortunately.

Really really tasty food in a busy Prahran market. What a nice surprise. Good reputations among Japanese people in Melbourne too.
We chose a pork belly don, 2 beef burgers. I should've checked about shichimi (Japanese chilli spice mix) as I had my little kids with us but my husband and I loved them.I was so happy with port belly, which was so soft and melt in my mouth. Would love to go back (without kids).
Food For Thought
Hands down! Best pork belly rice in Melbourne, twice cooked and charcoal flamed ultra-tender pork belly served with salad and kimchi. Perfection in a rice bowl for me.

Wasshoi opened since September last year inside the infamous, bustling Prahran Market. By the looks of things, the locals are loving the new addition. All the seats are taken by lunch time and your nose is engulfed by the aroma onslaught of grilled pork belly, hamburgers and chicken. I can’t even finish that sentence without drooling. Already impressed, I was made aware by my lunchtime compatriot (Shoutout to King-san) there was more to this humble abode than it’s charcoal-wafting exterior. Curious, I did some digging maybe even some National Treasure-esque type research but no where near as handsome as Nicholas Cage.

The food is great!!! Very Japanese cuisine taste. The price is acceptable and the flavor is satisfied! Have a try and u will know what I mean😬

In the middle of Prahran Market, this little place gets busy over lunch hours. Their food is delicious. However I find the service is a little slow given the limited menu.

Must try for pork belly lovers! I happily travel halfway across town to goto the market just for the sake of eating here. Authentic Japanese chefs and staff who are super friendly and clearly take pride in their restaurant. The yuzu juice is also amazingly refreshing - highly recommended.

Had delicious lunch in Prahran Market. Especially like their charcoal grilled pork belly, for its flavor and tenderness. It's quite addictive for pork belly lovers.

Kin-san is a man of pedigree having helmed, 'The Glass House' in Hobart (where it won the Tasmanian Best Seafood Restaurant of Year in 2015) and having worked in Taxi Dining Restaurant. But here's the kicker. Kin-san was a regular guest on the Japanese show... Iron Chef and has even hosted the Japan vs. Australia version. That's right, the Iron Chef.

Everyone, I think we have found the Senpai of all Senpais.

Twice Cooked Pork Belly Don, Beef Tsukuba Don, Yuki Juice. Wow, I've been to Japan many times and this place in the Market takes me right back there again- (with a nod to Korea. ). Pork is tender and sweetly flavoured- cooked over the coals in front of me. The beef ball is huge and friendly - both dishes are don so come in a bowl with rice, spicy cabbage kimchi, some lettuce with a little kewpie type mayo. The lemony Yuki juice is refreshing....and they have beer too 🍻- makes the market shopping more joyful.

在市场买菜饿了就顺便吃了个pork belly roll. 肉是蛮糯的,但是好重的猪肉骚味,重重的配料都压不住那阵味道,不知道牛肉和鸡肉会不会好些?
Had a pork belly roll when I was shopping at prahran market. The pork belly was tender enough but the "stinky pork flavor" was overwhelming.
Tony
yes yes yes.

well situated within Prahran market, we had the twice cooked pork belly don and the twice cooked chicken fillet don, and they were both fantastic. a pity that the beef don was sold out or we would have gotten a beef don to share as well. we also had the kochi yuzu juice, and it was delicious.

Lovely flavours! The beef pattie burger was fantastic! My wife had the pork belly don and didn't leave me any to taste! Only criticism, a small one, is they could use better quality Plato spoons so we can actually get the food without fear of spoon breaking. Highly recommended!

There only have limited options on the menu, which i like sometimes because you dont have too many options to choose to get headache.

Love the pork belly, you can choose the bun or rice, portion of the rice is slightly little compare with other shops but you will be contented after eating whole meal. The pork belly just melt in your mouth, nice bbq flavour, the bbq charcoal taste very good.

The beef patty very moist and tasty, personally i prefer to have smaller size patty.

They also have the chicken option, looks good as well and will definitely come back again to try it out.
Andrew
My partner and I ate at Wasshoi today. After a nice walk and shop round the market we were dying for some food. Thank God we found this little gem. Twice cooked chicken roll and chicken don bowl were the bomb. We loved the sweet barbecued flavour of the chicken, and crunch of the roll. Definitely worth a go.
Lazy Turtle
Friendly service and very tasty!! Chicken was cooked to perfection and the marinade was balanced nicely! Shame that there weren't more veggies in it! But if you are visiting Prahran Market, sit down to enjoy a meal here!

Amazing! 100% Japanese-owned-and-staffed ensures the authentic taste of Japan. The 10-hour braised pork belly don was one of the best dishes I have had in Melbourne.

This little place is a "must try".

I will definitely be back ... time and time again.

This titchy space fits in a crew of 6
who work happily together. Like most reviewers I had pork belly don. And it was fabulous, fresh, filling, non fatty and with a zingy sauce. Well done team.
May
Simply delicious!! had the beef mince tsukune don, what a big piece of juicy patty with yummy sauce! also loved all the side dishes which complemented the meat! will be back to try their other dishes and yuzu shandy!

Not expecting anything at first but we got super satisfied at the end!! We tried the twice cooked pork belly don and it was BOMB!!! All the combination and the sauces just blend so well. I can just go back to Prahran Market just to eat this. Totally recommend this place 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
MF
Just had a quick lunch here before I have a nice walk in the Prahan market. The menu is quite small but it's enough if you are just after a quick lunch around the area. The Yuzu juice was quite tasty and the tap kirin beer comes in a large glass👍. They also have a sake of the month for you to try for $7. The food quality was okay and I like the pork belly which was very tender and not too fatty.
DuckieLovesToEat
After roaming around the market, I got hungry and wanted to try this new place in Prahran market. I went for the pork belly don and it was pretty tasty. Customer service is pretty good too! I recommend for you to check it out.

Loving this new addition to the Prahran Market. A quick Japanese option that isn't sushi - finally! Love their pork belly rolls which they were able to make fructose friendly (thank-you) and their twice cooked chicken don is a perfect lunch. Yuzu drink is quite delicious and they are licensed which just happens to be an added bonus. Beer me please.
Adriannalovesfood
Food is pretty good and reasonably priced. Staff are so friendly and this is a great place to practice my Japanese haha!! The yuzu drink is so good and refreshing!
Foodinfocusz
Relatively new and perched in the midst of the fruit and veggies at Prahran Market this place has made its mark already. They were quite busy however the friendly staff kept up the the orders from the somewhat limited menu. Loved the slow cooked pork don which was really tender and moist, accompanied by a glass of Yuzu.
Julycheee
Had come expecting grilled skewers, but there is really only grilled chicken, pork (in a roll or on rice) or beef patty burgers. Nonetheless we left really happy from a simple and very tasty lunch. The yuzu juice was delightfully addictive and is highly recommended. Our grilled chicken and pork rice bowls were really well cooked, tasty and filling. Loved the sticky sauce mixing with the rice. It was a really satisfying feed.

Our only qualms were about the seating. Some of the chairs (all locked into the ground) were awkwardly far from the table. The seating turnaround and clean up system could be more efficient - there is no obvious bin and customers would just leave their rubbish behind for the next customer or for the wind to blow around...
