Review China Family Dumpling - Prahran

Susan susan
Had noodle soup with 5 spice beef and pork chop with egg on rice. Both tasted average. Noodle soup didn't have any vegies so quite plain. Service was quite friendly.

Authentic northern chinese dumplings and noodles, with complimentary prawn crackers, what more can you ask for? Great service and prices. 15 dumplings for $12 . Try their vegetable dumplings, full of spinach and cabbage! Stewed beef noodles in noodles soup is a winner. Prawn dish not so much. My only gripe is it's cash only, but it's so cheap it's worth it.

We had chicken fried rice (average), chicken with baked bean sauce on rice (good) and the pork dumplings (very delicious). A good and cheap place facing Prahran Market. They also serve very quick. We can recommend this place.

Great dumplings and fair prices. Would recommend the beef pancake

This place is a gem! Tried fried noodles, fried rice, dumplings and spring onion pancakes. Everything was so tasty! Great value for money!

Great services and seating. Good food but they are smaller serving compared to a standard Chinese restaurant. The place looks a bit tiring but it serves the purpose.

got the pork dumplings with the chinese broccoli(with garlic sauce) the best ive had in ages! ill be definitely coming back

There was quite a wait since it was very busy during the grand prix, but was very worth the wait when we got it!

Popped in for a quick lunch, very close to Prahran Market. Very fast service and friendly. Tasty food and at a good price too. Will be back again when I’m in the area.

3.5 to be precise

It was a rather impromptu stop-over here that day, brought about by the sudden idea of surprising my partner at his workplace with some takeaway lunch

I got him some Homemade Boiled Pork Dumplings, Chicken and Prawn Wontons in Chilli Oil, and Fried Chicken Wings.

The dumpling and wonton fillings had a nice density and bite to them, with good skin to filling ratios. Skin-wise, they were texturally balanced without being doughy.

For what seemed like an equal race to the finish line initially, the wontons ended up losing by a notch to the dumplings in the taste department. Sadly, the fried chicken wings came in last as they were rather salty and dry.

Collectively, the dumplings and wontons weren’t the best ones he’s had, but they were certainly one of the better ones.

Whether it was the element of surprise or the food itself speaking or a bit of both, he said that it was an enjoyable lunch overall.

This is the best dumplings place. I have tried Vegeterian fried dumplings and fried rice. Tried so many other places but always keep going back to this place. $11 for 15, can’t get any better.
Maggie
Pan fried pork dumplings are so fresh. Spring onion pancake yummmmmmm. Restaurant is running by a family . Service are friendly. Always busy on Friday nite. Make sure book a table
Bridget
Cheap & cheerful dumplings in Prahran. The venue is nothing fancy but the food does not disappoint. Excellent pan fried pork dumplings & spring onion pancake. Good value for money. I will be back!
Erin
Nice fresh dumplings . Friendly service. Highly recommend. BYO available . It’s good to catch up with friends in the little nice family restaurant

We went on a sunday arvo and found it peetty bustling. We ordered boiled vegetarian and fried vegetarian dumplings. Both could be branded average. It could have been better.

Hidden gem. Came here for lunch after visited Prahran Market. We ordered a fried chicken and prawn dumpling and vegetarian dumpling in chicken soup. We were impressed by the homemade dumplings with very nice texture dough. A lot better than the ones we usually eat at Shanghai Street dumpling in the city. Would visit again.

Had to write this review straight away! Cute little place, quite busy on a Thursday lunch time which says a lot. Just finished the most delicious plate of dumplings & still have leftovers in the fridge for dinner. A massive serving of 15 fried pork dumplings for $11. Lovely staff too. Served me prawn crackers while I waited for my takeaway which was a nice touch. Haven’t tried anything else from here yet but highly recommend for the dumplings alone!

About time I add a review to this cute little local spot.
We are big dumpling fans and have tried all the others in the area on numerous occasions and I can honestly say their vegetarian dumplings are oh-so fresh and super juicy (I'm a bit of a fuss pot I must admit), casing was not hard and coagulated but just fall apart oozing yumminess. $10 for 15 you really cannot beat this.
Overall Great spot for dumplings. Try it out! :)

Go for the dumplings... eat ALL of the dumplings.... But the other stuff on the menu isn't anything to rave about. In saying that I totally don't care! 15 delicious dumplings for under $10...yes please! So tasty! I buy these frozen whenever I get a chance to cook at home!

Best dumplings in the area!
Always get the fried pork dumplings, which are so juicy and flavourful.
The special fried rice is also fantastic.
All super reasonably priced for the serving sizes.
Service is always quick, even when they're really busy.
Staff are all very nice as well!
Definitely the go-to local place
Quarter Of A Pounder
Randomly walked past and felt like some dumplings,

As all dumpling places, we expected a quick eat and go type experience.
Considering it wasn't so busy, our food came out quiet slowly.

The waitress was nice but not very attentive, as we had to grab our own cutlery and share bowls from the next table.

we ordered steam dumplings
fried noodles
Fried tofu
Xiaolongbao

To be honest..
the dumplings were not tasty, the inside was like a paste rather then filling..

Xiaolongbao was nice, suspected it isn't home made.

Noodle was tasteless...

Conclusion:
1 time is more then enough

Basically the worst meal I ever had, except dumplings was ok, but if you brought up knowing Asian food, I laughed at people that think the food is good here.
Pork chop was cold (reheated food for sure), sauce on it was gross, worse than KFC gravy, rice was mushy, soup was tasteless, worst chicken wing no taste, no sauce, noodles was oily, at least fresh Vegies in it. Dumpling soup, soup is literally msg boiling water.

the rating is for nice people run the place, and being a real cheap meal. 6 dishes for 50$ something

Was in area, walk passed by, full of people, so give it go, and regretted, it is cheap, literally MSG makes up the flavours of all dishes, otherwise, all tasteless.

So if looking for a cheap meal, other than quality, and you can't cook, it is fine to eat here

If you want quality, and know what real Chinese quality food like and taste like, might do elsewhere, or try it yourself.
Tasty Buds
There is no other option than to return to this delightful little restaurant, the best dumplings in the area! Speedy service, delicious dumplings and friendly service. Only downfall is the cash only option.

Had dumplings here tonight with a group of 6 and everyone enjoyed themselves! Food were super tasty and reasonably priced. The xiao long baos (soup dumplings) were juicy- I really liked them! We also enjoyed the pan fried pork dumplings and the chilli wontons however the chicken and prawn dumplings weren't as good (but not bad either). The fried egg noodles were flavoursome and they weren't stingey on veggies and meat.

The staff were friendly and accommodative. Will definitely be back!

It's hard to find a good dumpling spot. Yeah yeah, dumplings are everywhere, but to truly find a special place is a rarity. CFD is that spot for me. Hands down the best vegetarian dumplings in town. The pork ones are juicy and the spring onion pancake is fresh, hot and crunchy and never soggy. The vegetarian noodles are so delicious and I like to mop up the sauce with my dumplings. The fact that you can purchase frozen dumplings makes this place even better. The downside? It's small and cramped and there's no atmosphere whatsoever. But the dumplings make up for all of that.

This review would be much more positive , if after having found a long hair in my meal, any of the waitresses had apologised to me, but instead very swiftly asked me if I "want another meal" or "take it off the bill"
(seems like they offer this alot, the way it rolled off the tongue). A simple apology would have been ok, yet the woman at the counter was impolite and had a very unpleasant attitude. Not to mention, the lack of eye contact when paying our bill.
I understand these things happen, but if there is a problem with the food,
at least the service should be good. Unfortunately, not a good experience.
Camilla
Best dumplings in area, go for the food not atmosphere. Staff always really nice. The xiao long bao and chicken & prawn wontons in chilli oil are the best
Rhys McCarthy
Best dumplings around Chapel St. Definitely my go to on a cheap eat night.
I would advise just getting the Fried Pork Dumplings, other non-dumpling dishes aren't the best, but what do you want from a place with dumpling in the name.
M&M
Had lunch on Sunday.

For two of us, we ordered
*Boiled pork dumplings
*Steamed pork dumplings
*Steamed vegetable dumplings

I liked the boiled pork dumplings the most. Ingredients were fresh, filling was flavourful and juicy, and I like the kick of ginger in it.

Nothing fancy at the place, but I think it is fine considering their price. Service was nice.
Facebook User
I highly recommend steam homemade pork buns and the dumplings

It would be unfair and somewhat silly to compare this to upper class restaurant, this place does look like plain Jane but for the price you get delicious juicy favoursome dumplings, simply can't complain!
Tiges
There is nothing fancy about the Prahran restaurant and that is just the way I like it. If I feel like dumplings and/or noodles and am around then there is really nowhere better than China Family Dumpling. Yes there are others but they cost more or have less flavour or both. The menu isn't huge but of the dishes I have tried they are consistently good.
Daniele
Dumpling was really good but the fried noddles not good at all with to much oil, no tasty but really nothing to say about the dumplings excellent!
Trippedmaiden
Love the steamed veggie dumplings. The Chinese broccoli with garlic and the pumpkin cake things are great too. Take a bottle of wine and stuff yourself for a good price.
Hungry
Cheap, good food. For the price you can't complain. Don't expect much of a dining experience though. It's sit down, eat and get out. One of my regular places for a cheap eat.
Thomas Alexander
Food is quick and tasty - the vege dumplings are some of the best in the area. The service struggles when they get busy but I'll be back soon.

This place can do no wrong. Every dish I've tried has been scrumptious. The dumplings and wontons here are amazingly delicious and I daresay more authentic and tasty than their fancy dumpling neighbor.
The shanghai noodles are beautiful.
They accept cash only, but you can BYO and enjoy a cheap and delicious night out.

Pretty good as dumpling places go in Prahran with 2 others in the nearby vicinity. Fast and friendly, well priced, often busy. Have had takeaway and eat in. Would be greta if they did delivery. Online ordering is great for pick up.
Dani R
Meh. Dumplings were average. Fried pork were very oily so not as crisp as they should have been. The dumplings in chilli soup were actually dumplings in chicken broth that had a dash of chilli oil. They were cheap but i just feel dissatisfied after eating them. The grief salt and pepper ribs were ok but nothing amazing.
Check Please
For a quick cheap and filling pit stop go no further than here. My chilli chicken with rice was yummy although lacking in fire power. There was chilli oil on the table to use. Recommend.
Alice Yeah
Cheap, cheerful & delicious. For $20 I get the vegetable dumplings (15 pieces) the fried tofu (6 pieces) and the spring onion pancake (6 pieces) which is enough for about three meals... or maybe less if I'm really hungover ;) Best dumplings this side of Chinatown for sure. I'm not sure why it indicates "no takeaway" because they definitely do and if you eat in they will happily let you take home whatever you can't fit in. It's no frills but I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Love this place and come here about once a week! All of the dumplings are amazing and so cheap. Favourite are the boiled veg. It's not fancy, but it's quick, cheap and great quality.
Kevin
Food and service was quiet delicious and reasonably good! Price range was cheap. Although the noodles were quite oily but I Really recommend you's to try the xiao long bao's and the pan fried dumplings!
François
Really good dumplings with great quality fillings. Noodle dishes are a bit lacking but let's be honest, you're here for the fried dumplings and they are delicious. And cheap.
Kylie Keane
Great food and fast efficient service, excellent value for money! Really love their fried pork dumplings, a good place for a quick satisfying dinner!

So far I have nothing bad to say about them at all! Tried and loved their Chicken and Prawn dumplings (fried) and Chicken and Prawn won tons in chili oil. Fantastic prices (avg $10-$12) for majority of the dishes on the menu!
Rajmohan
What I like about this place is food with fresh ingredients. Not like other similar place where the meat especially chicken tastes weird. Dumplings are juice. Some of their food are homemade authentic type. Place is not hifi but food is hifi.
Doran
Good old fashioned homestyle food. Nothing fancy about the decor or the service, but the food is fairly decent. There isn't much attention given to food presentation here. This is the kind of place you'd drop into if you just want a quick Asian meal without all the frills.

Basic but good. We love coming here for an easy weekend lunch. It seems to be open all day long and you never have to wait long for your meal. The fried pork dumplings and steamed chicken dumplings are our favourites. We've tried a noodle dish or two and a soup but these don't really do it for us so we stick to the dumplings and everyone's happy. Our daughter loves the great choice of soft drinks too :)

Okay. Very average dumping

My all time favourite dumplings!. Out of all the dumpling restaurants ive been to this one is my fav!! the dumplings are to die for. and its cheap. what more could you want!
Thank
Burnt takeaway dumplings. It's been a while since I've had the once favoured China Family Dumpling on Commercial rd. I was disappointed to be presented extremely burnt fried pork dumplings. Would have been very obvious to whoever packed and handed over the takeaway that these were not edible. Am very disappointed this wasn't picked up ... or that they didn't care.
Won't be back....
Sarahgshults
Awwesome. The staff are friendly and the service is prompt. The girl who served us helped us select the dishes and we were not dissapointed! They serve traditional dumplings and they are amazing!!!
Mo.liem
Just like most dumpling places, China Family Dumpling is cheap, quick, and filling. The downside for me, is the amount of oil they use. I find their fried menu items drenched in oil, especially the fried rice. All and all, I'll give the place another go when I'm around the area and after a cheap eat.

Cant trust this restaurant any more. I used to eat in at least 2 times every weeks until today I saw a mouse crawling around the window skirting near their front door. The shop is closed(holiday leave?), but it was so obvious to spot that animal through window. Not too sure if they have done any pest control at all, definitely not going back! Disappointing!

FAB DUMPLINGS, GREAT PRICE, BYO. My partner and I love coming here for the fried pork dumplings, quick service, byo, special fried rice. So authentic. Even the music (don't love so much).
Always a pleasure!

Good food !. As soon as we got there, chips were on our table. There was a single girl taking care of the place and there was no delay in order. For $20, two people can easily be satisfied and very full. Quantity was good enough . We ordered chicken prawn dumpling, veg dumplings and chili chicken on noodle soup. The chicken was not very spicy as I thought it should have been, but it was okay.

Terrible!!!. The onion pancakes- oily and disgusting.
Fried tofu with a noddle soup. Wow. I left a good portion of the meal untouched. The noodles had no flavour at all, swimming in their flavourless broth. I asked them to add some mushrooms (a surcharge of $2)- they had some sour aftertaste, and the tofu wasn't great either. Those dining with me weren't impressed with their dumplings. In short, a total waste of an experience.
Definitely will never go back.

Great Cheap Eat in the heart of Prahran. This place is great. Great menu selection, great prices (about 30% cheaper than Hutong) and super quick and tasty. You will get out of this for $20 a head if you indulge and potentially $12-$15 if you eat just enough. If you are a solo diner you could get a tasty, filling meal for $10 .

Seriously good food!
SmokinAussie
Shame about the noodles.. Positive... The spring onion pancake was one of the best I've ever had. Second, the broth was awesome and the meat tender and tasty. But why oh why did they ruin it with uncooked, unwashed packet hokkien noodles? They were mealy in texture and there was even a large lump of cold unseparated noodles at the bottom of the bowl which I left proudly on display before I left.

It doesn't matter how good everything else is if you can't get the noodles right. Yuk.

When it's busy service is really slow and inconsistent.. need more staff

Cheap, fast and delicious!!!!. This is our go to place for dumpling lunches at work. The dumplings are absolutely delicious and at under $10 for 15 pieces, you can't go wrong! The service is very quick and the staff are generally nice, however sometimes they can be a bit stingy with the sauces and you often have to ask for more and sometimes pay for it. My favourite are the boiled vegetarian dumplings with vinegar, soy sauce and that amazing chilli oil!
Kieran O'Brien
Solid. Very good dumplings, great value for the price. We over-ordered to the extreme as we'd eaten next door at hutong previously. If you are after quality for money, then you cant complain about China Family Dumpling. Their dumplings are fresh and full of flavour. My only complaint, they don't sell beer so bring your own!
JMJ
I love this place! The greatest vege dumplings I've ever had and we got free Chinese donuts the last time we went! Great service and price too.

Really tasty dumplings, cheap & good service what more could you ask for? Will definately be returning when I'm in the area next!

Great value for money. Quick service and the food is absolutely delicious. Authentic Shanghainese cuisine!!

Had the chicken and prawn dumplings in chicken soup. Absolutely delicious and made of real chicken!

Stumbled upon this with a hunger. I was not let down by this place. Really good value, really good food. Look forward to returning.

Amazing!! The most delicious dumplings I've ever had and the best service. We even got free Chinese donuts! Winner winner dumpling dinner!!
Samira
Cheap & Cheerful. Fantastic food for what you pay- the Steamed Mini Pork Buns are out of this world. You cant go past the chinese broccolli in Oyster sauce- both delish!
Nom Monster
Mediocre food.. I went there twice mainly because no restaurants in the Prahran make Shanghai fried rice cakes which is one of my favorites. The fried rice cakes were drenched in oil and the flavoring was very off. However, the dumplings weren't bad. The second time around I just ordered dumplings, but it just did not taste right! Will probably be a long long long long time before I go there again..

Horrible food and service! .... Horrible food and service!
I had spinach and pork wonton with noodles soup plus a serve of 6 steamed vegetables dumplings.
The soup was pure boiling water with no flavour, with wontons without flavour and noodles with no flavour! The only thing i could taste was coriander cause they chopped some fresh coriander and sprinkled it on the top.
The steamed dumplings were very old, probably frozen ones cause they were not fresh! Once again, no flavour and dumplings were dry and hard!
My bills came to $15, which i paid $6 in coins ($1 and $2 coins) because it is cash only premise, and the girl working there was not happy about it. She looked at me angry and didnt say thank you!
Not going back!!! Going there means spending money on angry service and crap food!
Jen Smith
Low quality. Dumplings taste old and hard. Meat in main dishes tastes low quality and stale. Do not recommend. Only redeeming quality is price, but even food court food is better quality.
Minny
Love the Dumplings. It a must. Hot and Juicy. Got to love it!!
Amanda Leafy Pixie Cowell
Tasty, fast and cheap. Best dumplings I have eaten in Melbourne.

Had food here last night and the food is great and value for money.

Went there on Sunday afternoon for late lunch. Food came really quick, tasted really good and satisfying!! We ordered steamed pork dumplings, xiao long bao, chinese brocolli, and spring onion pancake.

We haven't tasted dumplings so good as this in a very long time now. Best thing is we live around the corner..!
Miss Nommer
Not impressed at all. Dumplings were tasteless and filled with homogenous goo. There was little difference between the colour and texture of a steamed pork dumpling and a chicken/prawn dumpling. The fried rice wasn't even fried, and the spring onion pancake was flat and limp. I don't understand the positive reviews here beyond what may have been posted by friends of the restaurant, or by the owners themselves. I'd much prefer the longer trip to Aunties, or to spend the extra dollars at HuTong.

Little Treasures!. Was doing the usual grocery shopping and decided to take a short stroll. Had the sudden craving for dumplings but was rather reluctant to enter the empty restaurant. Well but as they say never judge a book by its cover, the chicken and prawn pan fried dumplings were up to standard and I would say they serve better dumplings than Dumpling plus, Ping's at Clayton and personally, Hu Tong!

yup that was my girlfriend, i personally like this dumpling very much as I suggested the place to her, i would recommend the fried shanghai noodle (the guy)
Molly
Great dumplings. Dumplings here are very yummy. Pan-fried dumplings, wontons in chilli oil, fried noodles (especially the seafood variation) and spring onion pancake are favourites. The only dish we wouldn't order again is the hot & sour soup, as it didn't have a lot of flavour (perhaps over-Westernised because of the location?) The food IS a little on the oily side, but I think that's to be expected with fried dumplings and fried noodles. The service is pleasant and polite, in comparison to other dumpling places (cough-auntiesincarnegie-cough) it's practically fine dining. Prices are very reasonable too.
Courtney
Really enjoyed the dumplings and especially the beef pancake. It's also BYo and HuTong next door isn't. Would come back.
Michael
Fantastic dumplings cheap And very yummy! We were pleasantly surprise, they had heaps of choice! Decor is very basic and not the best the service isn't much better but is satisfactory but the dumplings and stirfrys make up for it
