Review The Tandoor Indian Restaurant - Prahran

Abdulrhman Alhoti
Very bad experience, very small dishes that serve the food in compare to high price. This small dish of chicken butter is $23 only three small pieces of chicken in it. As well as the rice is $5 that contains 3 big teaspoon. I'm writing this comment from my experience and not for any other purposes. I don't know why this restaurant gets high evaluation. Thanks .

That. Was. Amazing!! I didn't realise I lived so close to an Indian restaurant which has such a fine touch when it comes to preparing food with incredibly distinct flavours. Such a beautiful atmosphere. The service was amazing and the friendly banter between the staff and us made us feel very welcomed. Will definitely be returning.

Amazing food and very attentive staff. The owner made an effort to come out and chat to me and my partner and give us a history on their family business. He was so sweet and we had loads of laughs. It was a delightful dining experience, food was so good and service ensured that we will definitely go back.

Such warm and lovely staff. They really want to make everything great for you. The food was exquisite and very reasonably priced! High end restaurant that doesn’t break the budget! I can eat a lot but was very satisfied and full! Great service. Will definitely come again with family! Also a big thank you to the staff for a great meal and experience!

Best Indian ever!. It's safe to say... I love all kinds of food but this Indian is the best I've tasted. We dined here with a group of 10 people on a Tuesday night for my boyfriends birthday. The service was prompt and friendly and the food was just spectacular. So much flavour! A few crowd favs: a spinach entree dish (amazing..sounds weird but ask for this...you won't be dissapointed), butter chicken was right up there with the chicken tikka and omg the Naan! Very reasonable prices given we had a table full and left overs ! Highly recommended!

Food was really nice, perfectly cooked. Issue was how long the takeaway took to prepare when there was only one other table in the restaurant. Then a bit annoyed that rice didn't come with the curry - always does elsewhere but this was my first time here. Had to pay an extra $4 for the rice.

Hands down the BEST Indian I have had. The food was simply delicious, every dish was as good at the last. And the staff were so wonderful. Definitely my new FAV place to eat!

The flavours of everything we got were top notch, however we ordered a $26 prawn dish and had five prawns swimming around the dish and the rest basically a soupy sauce. That's $5 a prawn. Pretty disappointed about that. Please keep a mind to your portion sizes as for me this was disappointing and stingy.

Came to dine and the food and service was amazing. Order fish curry and it was the best Indian curry I’ve eaten yet. The chefs come to check up on you and are very attentive. Highly recommend.

The Tandoor is a cosy little gem tucked away on the popular strip of commercial road. Been my first time to an Indian restaurant I did not know what to expect, so I left the ordering to my friends who ended up ordering a range of dishes on the menu.... The food came out and instantly I could smell those strong spicy aromas, we dished up and wow the food was delicious, rich, flavoursome and down right delicious. You can tell that the chef is passionate about his food after the first bite...The Tandoor has opened my eyes to indian food which is now one of my favourite cusines.... Overall highly recommend the Tandoor 👌

The food was all right but there wasn't much variety. Moreover, it was weird how one of the staff kept staring at us the whole time we were eating. Not going back for sure!

Nice Indian food, the restaurant is a bit outdated but as the food was really nice I don’t care about the rest. The naan, chicken tikka and eggplant were great.
Give it a try!

My partner and I ate here tonight, and very much enjoyed our meal! We started with the samosas (no picture) and they were delicious. Pastry was crispy and tasty, and the filling was really yummy, too. Then we ordered the butter chicken and the chicken madras. We also ordered the paratha bread, the keema kulcha and Palau rice. Everything was so delicious!! The service was great, as well. We will definitely be coming back!
Nice chicken tikka n dal tadka. Service is tad slow but am not complaining thanks to the lovely tikka masala. If I am in Melbourne again, i wouldn't mind a second round.

Legend has it that Elton John insists on eating here whenever he is in town and it is easy to understand why.

Formerly situated on Chapel St, The Tandoor was once a thriving, very highly rated restaurant, but misfortune in the shape of a greedy landlord struck and an alternate leasehold required. This is where The Tandoor - erstwhile culinary disrupter on the precipice of greatness - fell back into suburbia, and, for all intents and purposes, became just another Indian eatery in a shopping strip.

But it is more than that. Much more.

The food at The Tandoor falls into the elite category of subcontinental offerings available here in Melbourne. Its chicken tikka is simply sublime, so too the butter chicken, allu mutter, paneer mutter and the naan. Sure, the fit-out is tired and the ambience less "trendy" than many of its competitive threats, but the eating is what sees this establishment remain at the top of the food chain.

Attend this restaurant if you want a no-nonsense delight. Who knows, you may run into Sir Elton!

Can't understand the bad reviews. This is the best tasting Indian food in Melbourne. Always worth the wait. When ordering from other places and i'm always dissapointed. This is the best and why I've been ordering takeaways from these guys for years.

Overpriced, average food. And Fawlty Towers service. Ordered delivery. The wait time was estimated at 80 minutes. Went to pick up instead, despite paying a remarkable $11 (!!) delivery fee, which did not get refunded. Asked to eat in (starving by then) and were told we'd have pay the full bill again and 20% extra (for dine-in at their EMPTY establishment) and sort out refunds from EatNow. And then waited another 10 minutes. And utterly ungracious service through it all. If everyone has this kind of experience, I'm amazed these fellas are still around. The guys down the road have far better food minus the dramas. Never again.

Was a great Indian restaurant but after the renovation few days ago they raised their prices ridiculously and I would never come back here. $24 for a curry? Really!!!!

We got take away, only realised when we got home that they'd missed a whole dish. When we called they already realised they missed it but we had paid and we're all the way home. Pretty annoyed no solution came of it so it was a waste of money. Spicy as too even though we asked for completely mild

At last I found an Indian restaurant nearby which serves good Roti- tandoori, fresh, wheat flour and soft. Really tasty mutter paneer, fresh cottage cheese and curry. The service was also quick. Also tried the samosa, not bad at all, although the mint chutney was sweet for my Indian taste buds. If you like good Indian food, a myst try place.. The only thing they can improve is to serve with a smile.

Great local place. Fabulous authentic food and lovely friendly owner.

WORST SERVICE EVER. No wonder they have to offer 35% off to get customers, worst customer service EVER! Ordered for delivery at 5.45pm, at 5.45pm they called me saying the kitchen was broken and food would take another 25-30 mins, 45 mins later called back and they said 10 more mins, 15 mins later called back and the extremely rude women on the phone started lying saying she last quoted 30 mins. She then said the driver is almost there and will call me to give me and update on how long he will be. Received no call from the driver. Driver rang when he arrived to say he did not understand delivery instructions and I would need to come and find him on the street. ONE AND A HALF HOURS LATE finally received the average food. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND, WOULD NEVER GO BACK!!!

I'd also recommend the no.27 paneer butter masala, but truly it's a bit more than mild as listed. Also best to order a serving of rice per person. And above all order take-away before you get there or book way in advance for dine-in.

Don't ever order for delivery- wait times of 2 hours and when you call and ask if it could be any sooner, you just get a lot of excuses and the person on the the other end hangs up. I should not have given them a number of chances!

Not good enough. We kept our jackets on as it was too cold in restaurant.
Had ordinary chicken curry with rice. Nothing special. Also had Palak Paneer (spinach and cheese) which was way too salty and couldn't finish. Keema Naan was oily.
The friendly gentleman was the only redeeming element.

Going downhill. Used to love this place for a cheeky Friday takeaway. They now regularly take nearly two hours to deliver a meal!!! Not worth it any more, I am afraid.

We 6 of us went here. The lady host was pretty rude to answer us anything. We ordered food it took 1:30 hrs to reach our table, though we waited patiently the food was okay. We will not go here to eat again. Bad place.

This place is absolutely delicious, super flavoursome, authentic and family run. I get take away from here often and it's always great..

Sub par. Food is horrible.

Good but overall not great. I love the food here, and the owner. The food is marvellous, it has a very good authentic feel compared to a lot of Australian Melbourne restaurants. For me it can be a tad "mild" but they bring you extra spices if you request it. The big let down here is the service is too slow, and not attentive. They usually have only 1 waiter - he's hurried, not smiling, and doesn't have any floor-staff support. The owner takes a very big back step when it comes to service, but chats he is good at. This place is pretty expensive and because the service is not very attentive or fast, I go here rarely because there are plenty of tasty and cheaper and friendlier Indian restaurants around.

Horrid customer service. Will not be returning. Absolutely horrible customer service. Booked online with online service on their website and received confirmation that booking was confirmed. When I arrived they said there was no records of it despite me having a printout of my confirmation. When I questioned this, they told me to take it up with Dimmy's who looks after their online booking and said I should have called them to confirm. Absolutely no ownership and puts the blame back on me the customer.

As I was with my ladyfriend, I decided to be a gentleman and remained calm and kindly asked if they had a table for 2. To which his reply was a very annoyed, "ok just wait", and walked off. Even though the restaurant was half empty, they made us wait at least 15 minutes before seating us.

Anyway, cut a long story short, once seated the waiters were not tentative, and extremely slow. Took 10 minutes waiting just to get some water. Food was average. Not bad, but definitely had way better. Will definitely not be returning. And yes, I signed up to Urbanspoon just to post this review as this was the first time I have had such horrible customer experience at a restaurant.
Gary
No intention of returning. Wasn't bad, just not great. Butter chicken was particularly bland, lamb (rogan josh) was chewy. No complimentary papadums!!! & take away dish leaked in bag.

Brilliant service!! The mature aged gentleman who appeared to be the owner was a wealth of knowledge and convinced us to try our usual dishes with a twist which he suggested. Taking his word for it we just as he suggested and LOVED it. Best Indian food I have had in a long time. Definitely order the garlic naan bread, delicious!! Will dine here again and again.

Service was i think average but the foods were delish! We had a beef rogani and the beef were tender and very tasty!! For entree my son had chicken tikka. It was very good. We also had samosas and plain naan bread and it were all good too! Would definitely recommend!

Unusual dessert portion size,. Our entrée, the chicken tikka, did not come out with the correct chicken portions. On the menu it described receiving 4 potions and we only received two. The desserts were extremely small. See the pictures to better understand what i mean. The service was a letdown as well. We struggled to get a hold of the waiter to get our waters refilled. They should look to putting water bottles on peoples tables as water helps when dealing with hot curries. Despite these small faults the Indian food did taste very good

Best indian dining yet. Had dinner on Sunday night with girlfriend. Super friendly and attentive staff. Naan bread was the best i've ever had. Substantial servings of Chicken korma and beef rogoni were extremely enjoyable. 10/10 as far as i'm concerned.
