Review Mama Marijas - Prahran

Janina Nowak
Update 18dec2021: Alex informed me today that the business has been sold to two Italian guys who will most probably open up a café also. Alex will close permanently on Friday, Christmas Eve, 24dec. A sad farewell to another of my long-time favourite eateries. It's like losing a family member! Good luck to you both. I know you will do well again as you know what it's all about. ****** Update 9dec2020: They're back! Having survived the pandemic lockdown. I'm so pleased as they are a long-time favourite. Summer is here and the offerings are appropriate to the season. Today had the spinach quiche with Greek salad, no feta, and tomato relish. Light, delicious and refreshing for this beautiful day. Recommended. They made use of the lockdown and gave the interior a lovely refresh, along with some tasteful Christmas decorations in readiness. Go visit, you won't be disappointed. ****** Mother and son business, Marija is the cook, Alex the son and server. Friendly and engaging service, the kind where one's preferences are remembered without prompting. Food is prepared fresh and served with chef-y flair and is delicious. Recent dish experienced from the all day breakfast menu was a simple omelette with mushrooms, spinach and parsley on two slices of dry toast (see photos). Came promptly. Highly recommended. All day breakfast, lunch and catering. Wheelchair access via the back entrance from Market Square at Prahran Market. Kid-friendly. Hours: 7-3 Mon-Sat.

The reviews online were spot on! Excellent table service, delicious coffee, and the eggs benedict were amazing. I especially liked the bacon and hollandaise sauce. The biocup designs are cute too, just look!! 😁 I'm very pleased with my experience, I just wish I visited Prahran more often.

What a cute little cafe with ultra friendly staff and possibly the best vegan breakfast I’ve had around melbourne so far. Granted I’ve only been vegan a few months, but when this masterpiece came out to me my eyes lit up like a kid’s on a candy store! It was delicious. It’s great seeing places have dedicated vegan options on their menus more and more. Very impressed.

Two for breakfast and both delicious and beautifully presented meals. Service super and I think Mama cooked and served us. Price was very reasonable too for the generous serves. Highly recommended and WILL return. Thanks for a lovely breakfast experience.

My favourite place for breakfast in Melbourne. Stunning food, well priced and very friendly staff. Servings are generous and always fresh and tasty. Check it out, you won’t regret it.

Locals a plenty here ducking in from the markets (also worth a look). Was really busy when we got there but the staff did their best to let us know they hadn't forgotten us. Good coffee good food in an unpretentious setting. Brekky or brunch place ideal.

Instagrammable yet filling and delicious food. A place to go for a nice coffee and lunch, conveniently located in Prahran market. Maria is an absolute darling and Alex's customer service is outstanding.

Ran into this place by chance and loved it. Loved your egg muffin that I had for breakfast. So good i came back for lunch for the pulled pork burger which was equally delicious. The art work on your wall was refreshing. Loved the harley quinn and princess leia drawings/artwork.

We went there a couple of weeks ago. It was recommended by a friend. The environment is great, we sat close the window seat, holding a cup of nice coffee, seeing the world passing by, really relaxed. We ordered four dishes and really enjoyed everything we ordered. Coffee was great, above all, the service was so fantastic. Had a chat with the owners, they were so warm and friendly. Will definitely come back. Strongly recommend it!

Absolutely fantastic service, coffee and food! Aleks remembers your name and is always up for a chat. Marija always cooks up a storm and gives you plenty of quality food for a more than generous price. Safe to say I’ll always be a customer.

Excellent friendly service. Good food and coffee is always great. It has a cute and cosy atmosphere where you always feel welcome. Love eating by the window looking into the street.

Always smiley and greets us when we walk in the door. They even remembered my coffee order after visiting the place twice! The food looks and tastes amazing, and is perfect sitting looking out of the window. It’s also super convenient being next to Prahran markets.

I visited Mama Marija's over the weekend after a trip to Prahran Market. The decor is bright and the staff are bubbly. I ordered the Mama's Mediterranean ($18) and the Tender Crispy Chicken burger ($17). The Mediterranean was well presented and delicious, with a grilled eggplant and paprika relish, Turkish bread and both feta and halloumi cheese it had a good balance of flavours on the plate.

The tender chicken burger on the other hand was not so tender, the chicken strips were a little dry and the burger could use more sauce. The chips were well seasoned accompanied with a rich and creamy aioli. Although i enjoyed the chips, i wouldn't order the burger again.

I also ordered an Iced coffee to accompany my meal, it was good and arrived in one of those hipster mason jars - no ice cream as requested, just coffee as it should be.

The menu has a wide range of options, but as i've discovered it is hit and miss. It wasn't too busy so if you're in the area and looking for somewhere to eat, it's worth a shot.

Been here a few times for coffee and yesterday we finally tasted some of the food.
The staff are great, fantastic service as always!
The Vegetarian Mediterranean breakfast was delicious! Great combinations and I especially enjoyed the Hallumi and the dried tomato paste.
Deserves better ranking!

We had breakfast and coffee on the weekend. Coffee was so bad it was like dishwater. Average food and poor service. Won't be coming back there are better spots close by.

Loved this place! Convenient spot being in Prahran Market, and had really different options, which is a nice change from the usual brunch you usually see. I recommend the zucchini and corn fritters but the tender chicken strips were also really really delicious. Will be back!

The crew in this bright space are a happy lot. I selected an omelet with mushrooms, spinach and bacon. Although it was more like a crepe it tasted pretty good and certainly filled a gap.

On this particular Saturday we're heading over to market and lunch. There is no sincerer love than the love of food - Mama Marija . On the counter were pastries, oh how I wish Agatha was here! Where does one find a good croissant?

Walked in one morning for breakfast without a lot of expectation. We had the French toast and porridge. It was without a doubt the best French toast I've had. They also put out a nice pot of tea. Very friendly staff and nice interiors make it a cozy place for catching up.

Will definitely go back again.

Great coffee and a wide range of fresh cakes and pastries. Full breakfast menu with lots of interesting combinations as well as the usual suspects. Excellent service with a fantastic attitude.

After walking around the Prahran markets trying to find somewhere I could sit down and relax while I ate/drank, I found this little gem tucked away near the entrance. The service was very friendly. I order Mama Marija's pulled pork and an iced latte. The iced latte came out in a big jar, not a small glass like some places and it tasted good. The pulled pork though...omg I think it was the best pulled pork I've ever had. It was so tender and tasty. The apple slaw it came with balanced it out so perfectly. The poached eggs were cooked to perfection and the hollandaise was yum. I really couldn't fault this place. It was very quiet there, I wonder if it's a new place? I think it will get busy before long. Good job guys!
