Review Tokosan - Prahran

Edwar Kartio
This bar have a great vibe with some creative decor. Umbrellas hanging above the bar accompanied with grafittis on the wall. There's also a small courtyard at the back and even a karaoke room for your functions! Unfortunately the food was not really that good. The takoyaki and negiri was average. The ribs was disappointing as it was lacking any flavour except the meat itself. Food - 5 Service - 7 Vibe - 9 Price - $$$

A hidden gem with a great renovation and colourful addition to Greville St. The food is good, but we miss the original Japanese especially quality sashimi.

Enjoyed a nice casual Tuesday night at Tokosan. We came as a group of 6 and advised that we were going to share a number of items. Unfortunately we were not given any indication of how much to order from each section of the menu so it was a bit of a guessing game. Despite being a very quiet night, the staff were inattentive and leaning on the bar chatting to each other. We had to wave to them a number of times to get their attention to order. Once we got around to ordering from the Main section, we chose 3 dishes. We were then told that 2 of them were actually not available tonight. This was very unprofessional and should have been verbalised at the beginning of the night as it would have resulted in more entrees being ordered. The food that was available was very good but the overall experience was unpleasant. In an area with fantastic restaurants and service, it was disappointing to experience this.

I was really excited to go here for my birthday. The $1 oysters were amazing - however the rest of the night was not. There seemed to be only one person taking orders (he seemed under dressed) and I found the restaurant didn't know what it wanted to be. We ordered the over priced Seared Tuna which was delicious all the same. However the most disappointing part was the chips being plonked and ripped open on the table by the waitress - in a paper bag. Sorry but if you're going to charge top dollar for your food this is not the type of service I would be expecting. This venue needs to decide what it wants to be - McDonald's or fine dining... $100 for three people and we still needed to go and grab dumplings afterwards. Disappointing.

Great atmosphere! Perfect for a date night! Interesting gorgeous decor! I had the $1 oysters on a Monday night along with a salmon roll. Really great oysters (large) and good quality! Service was great and it was a quiet night.

Good food let down by poor service. Tried to order a discounted drink at 7pm on the dot which was the end of happy hour and was denied... Not the best way to start a $500 dinner. Food was great with good flavours however it was served in takeaway containers mixed with nice plates... 5 order errors were made over the course of the night pretty average for a place with such nice atmosphere and food... Let itself down unfortunately!

This place is totally under staffed, there were so many people waiting to get drinks with only 3 people behind the bar, you had to wait a really long time. It became so frustrating that you just forgot about it and didn't get a drink. Then we were told we could no longer buy glasses of wine but could buy the bottle, not sure why that was. We ordered food which is the best thing this place seems it has going for it, but at 8pm on a Saturday they ran out of several food items. The place just seemed disfunctional which is ashame because it can be so much better

To start off with I booked a table for 8 with friends for the all you can eat sushi Tuesday night special, I booked a week in advance. They started off by seating us 15 minutes after our booking and waited a further 20 before we got a first taste of sushi, and by taste I mean 3 thinly cut circles. We were all starving by this point, and had to wait another 10 minutes before we were finally given another slither of sushi. They only had one waiter with one platter of sushi for the whole restaurant at this point, which kept running out before everyone had been served, which often would be on the bigger tables, meaning an even longer wait for us, since you had to wait for them to serve you, and the demand was clearly not matching up to the supply from the kitchen. On top of that the rice was clearly old and undercooked, which made it almost unedible. Do not recommend going here, you’re better of going to a fast food sushi place and getting better sushi, more of it and not wasting 2 hours of your time. When we complained to our waitress during the night, she seemed sympathetic but not much was done. When we proceeded to mention this to the man as we were paying at the end of the night, he offered no sort of apologies, was in fact rude about how they can only have a certain budget to make so much sushi on these nights. DON’T ADVERTISE ALL YOU CAN EAT THEN. We probably had about 8-10 small sushi pieces each, not worth $20 or my/your time.

Horrible horrible people. I was told the karaoke room was free but wasn’t allowed to book. Now told it is booked and not available - by staff who were extremely and unnecessarily rude. They have ruined a birthday party for an excited child. Never go there if you want a confirmed fun place.
The Hungry Vegan
Loved the buzz at Tokosan for date night with my partner on a Saturday night. The food was delicious with a few vegan options to choose from. I opted for the miso eggplant (a little salty for my liking) and the stir fry noodles which was incredibly tasty and filling. We also tried the new icy pop cocktail that they had on the specials board that went  down like a treat! The service was amazing and the waiters very attentive. Didn't hurt that my Zomato gold subscription gave us 2+2 drinks. Winning! Am super keen to check out Tokosan again, but this time maybe on a Wed night when they have sumo wrestling!

I came here for dinner with my partner on a Tuesday night, for the $29 'all you can eat' special. Overall we found the food to be very mediocre, and most of it was rice to ensure you'd get full quickly. Some dishes were alright, they did have thin pieces of salmon and tuna on rice, which were probably the best of the lot. However, the more disappointing dishes were the gyoza and the fried chicken, which were hard and stale, and tasted as though they were defrosted straight out of the freezer. More food court quality, than actual restaurant food. Also the venue and the food were very white-washed and didn't really feel like authentic Japanese. I would suggest avoiding this special and just trying out their other normal dishes on the menu.

<br/>We came to Tokosan the other night and what an amazing experience !! Not only was the interior really cool and funky inside but the food was delicious !We ordered the dumplings , fish tacos, sashimi , Japanese Bolognese , miso salmon and lava cake. <br/><br/>Our favourite dishes were most definitely the bolognese , salmon and lava cake . The ramen bolognese was like a dan dan noodle and had mince and eggplant - very savoury . The salmon was so tender and loved the miso with it . The lava cake was so delicious, gooey inside with a hint of matcha<br/><br/>Thanks so much for having us !

We tried the all you can eat buffet, but I would not try it again, the food was average, the food is slow to come and be served and I think if we spend the same amount on a different menu set in other better sushi places it would have been better

We had a lovely dinner at Tokosan on a Friday night. The place is conveniently located just less than 5 mins walk from Prahran station. Upon walking in, we immediately fell in love with the decoration!!! It has a very modern Japanese vibe like the name Tokosan (see pictures). As for food, we ordered Pork ribbies, tempura prawn, raw spicy tuna (temaki rolls), salmon and tuna sashimi combo and drinks. Food came out so quickly and service was friendly. The sashimi dish was very fresh and the hand roll sushi were flavourful. The ribbies were paired perfectly with dippin sauce and it’s an interesting dish. We would highly recommend this place for a party functions or just a chill night out.

Finally came to Tokosan after looking at it for a while. Went with my family of 4 and we all shared a variety of meals. We ordered fish tacos, chicken skewers, pork gyozas, pork ribs, soba veg Stirfry and broccolini. Everything was really delicious and lots of interesting flavours. Would 100% get the fish tacos and pork ribs again - outstanding!!
Flying Forward
Points for: <br/>- 5-7PM Happy Hour<br/>- Loads of space: restaurant, beer garden and karaoke room<br/>- Daily specials<br/><br/>Tokosan serves up casual fusion Japanese cuisine, typical of what you'll find in South Yarra/Prahran.<br/>There's quite a few different items you could try on the menu, which you could take advantage of on Tuesday's $29 all you can eat offer.<br/><br/>I was invited to the restaurant, and sampled a few dishes:<br/>* ramen spag bol - reminiscent of a dry-style tantan men, the sauce has sweetness from the teriyaki, saltiness from miso and spicyness from the gochujang.<br/>For me though, all these sauces have their own salty element, so combined, it can be on the salty side. The noodles were also a little too soft for me (probably cooked 1 min over), as I like to have a bit of resistance to the bite. Nice nuggets of minced beef though.<br/>* raw spicy tuna temaki - the seaweed wrap should have a fresh, crisp, crack when you bite into it, but this was very soft. <br/>* wagyu beef bao - it's like a cheeseburger in a fluffy bao. The slab of beef has a soft tender bite to it. Quite enjoyable!<br/>* fish taco - the fish had a crunch batter and the shell was crisp. Lots of good textures going, and the wasabi mayo with tartare gave it a creamy finish.<br/>* pork ribbies - tender ribs, you could suck the meat off the bone like a meatsicle. Nice smokey charred flavour, but again for me, the flavour was teetering over the salty side. Mellows out with the tofu/sour cream sauce though.<br/>* yakitori skewers - similar to the pork ribs: had a nice charry flavour, and used the same teriyaki sauce.<br/>* TFC - the juicy nuggets of chicken had a crisp coating. Pairs very well with the mayo sauce.<br/>* Nikki bell cocktail - very fruity drink, hardly taste any alcohol at all which is dangerous! The foam cap made the cocktail pretty, however there was a lingering smell of old eggwhite.<br/><br/>So some of the dishes were a bit hit and miss, but generally if the use of teriyaki and miso were pulled back slightly, they would really shine.<br/><br/>I very much like the space available here, but the interior design is a bit of a love or hate thing.<br/>Some might say it's cool and kitsch, with artsy "Japanesey" elements that might fit in - Chinese parasols, manga graphics, Katakana wallpaper and even an underwear vending machine straight from Japan (no, they aren't used, and the vending machine doesn't work).<br/><br/>From the perspective of an Asian-Australian, I feel like there is a slight air of cultural appropriation, but I guess in the true Australian way, it's all just a bit of fun.<br/>Now, book the karaoke room and queue up "Turning Japanese" by The Vapors.

Just realised we have been doing Japanese a lot, and if that's an indication that we love Japanese food we won't deny it EVER.<br/><br/>Tokosan specialises in serving Japanese Fusion food....And it's definitely good at doing so.<br/><br/>The interiors of are quite chick and vibrant. It would be quite safe to say that color the RED (Kunnu''s Fav) dominates the interior and reminds us of Japan.<br/><br/>The music is upbeat and quite techno...Just right for a restaurant like Tokosan.<br/><br/>Ordered the Following:<br/><br/>We'd, any day of the time, binge on Crispy Chicken Wasabi Waffle Sandwich which consisted of a very flavorful fried chicken and a mayo dressing with a hint of wasabi<br/><br/>Spag Bowl was a bowl full of different flavors that fused too well to tease our taste buds. Perfect culinary fusion inspired by the very famous Italian Spaghetti Bolognese<br/><br/>The #Takoyaki Seafood Balls and The Chicken Ramen Bowl weren't great but worth enjoying it. The meat in Takoyaki was a bit chewy and few of the Chicken in the Ramen bowl were rubbery.<br/><br/>Hospitality : Topnotch.<br/><br/>Price: Value for Money<br/><br/>Would We Recommend or Revisit: Definitely Yes<br/>

There are representations of Japanese flavours and elements in each of the dishes, and the kitchen team do well to make sure that the tweaks and fusion elements compliment these base flavours. Our favourite picks included the silky pieces of eggplant dressed in a gorgeously sweet miso glaze, and seared tuna tataki with fragrant yuzu, ponzu and truffle.

First and foremost we would like to thank Tokosan for inviting us to dine at their restaurant. When we arrived at their doorstep, there was a strong sense of familiarity especially the steps which lead into their main dining room. We had a suspicion that we may have been here before, but it felt a little foreign at the same time! The location felt familiar but the décor and atmosphere felt different. After spending way too much time trying to figure out this mystery, we dug through our photos and realised that they used to be called Toko! It turns out that Toko is relocating to the CBD and this place had been revamped to Tokosan. Another mystery solved, we were finally back on track, and ready to see what Tokosan brings to the table.

Just a short walk from Prahran train station is Tokosan. We went on a Saturday night and it was really quite. The service was really friendly. The menu for me missed a few favourites and seemed limited (no mixed sashimi was disappointing- they did have seared tuna but a small platter of mixed rolls and sashimi would have been a better way to try more on offer). The chicken katsu was good but I wasn’t a fan of the curry ketchup that it was covered in, I’d prefer this on the side. There’s a karaoke room and a massive outdoor patio area that looks amazing. The decor is cool and colourful

Loved the look of this venue from the minute we walked in!! Bright and lovely with different spaces within the restaurant.., indoors , outdoors, karaoke, booths, tables... amazing. We sat at the front of the restaurant where we could people watch. First up we had edamame which arrived in a box. We shared a few other dishes and chose bubbles to drink with our meals as it was a warm night. Miso salmon was the highlight dish but it was all good... salt and pepper calamari, eggplant etc <br/>The meals were delivered as they were ready so not in any specific order but as we were sharing that didn’t present any problems. After your meal be sure to wander around the place and check out the bar and karaoke rooms.

Booked this restaurant for my birthday as I’m a coeliac and most of the menu states GF on it. Only to arrive and not be able to eat anything other than a few pieces of sushi as the dishes weren’t actually gluten free.. very disappointed with the false advertising. I’m giving it 3 stars because my friends enjoyed their meals which looked really good.

Tokosan opened up on Greville Street, Prahran late last year as the 'cheeky sister' to Toko (complete with a karaoke room!) and offers a fast-casual dining experience set against a cool Japanese style backdrop. <br/><br/>The street-style Japanese menu is designed for sharing, with mouth-watering dishes including seared tuna sashimi, gyoza dumplings, sweet eggplant miso and (our absolute favourite) flounder karaage which features crispy cube sized morsels of flounder pieces served with snow peas and the most additive chilli ponzu dipping sauce.
FOOD TRIP
Tokosan is a massive hip and vibrant bar/eatery located in Prahran. With a modern and electric Tokyo theme, the place itself is fun to chill out and dine in. Plenty of spaces to hang out, even a karaoke room. Assortment of food is available, but very average. Salmon Rolls (6pcs) $14.50Avocado, Cucumber, Mayo, Caviar
Hello. Imnikki
Loud, funny and crazy - that would be how I would describe Tokosan as a person. The umbrellas hanging from the ceilings, the underwear vending machine and the Japanese-inspired murals all add to the fun vibe of Tokosan.<br/><br/>The menu features a wide range of share plates, and who could miss the cocktails named after the characters in Kill Bill. The 2 cocktails that my partner and I ordered (Nikki Bell and Vernita Green) were way too sweet, but tasty nonetheless.<br/><br/>Being fairly hungry, we might have slightly went overboard with the food. The pork ribs were the standout dish - moist, sticky, tender to the point of falling of the bone, and deliciously smoky and caramelised. The katsu prawn and TFC were fried to perfection, both with a well-seasoned batter and delicious accompanying sauce.<br/><br/>The salmon inside out roll and crispy squid were run-of-the-mill dishes - good but not great. The Tokosan pancakes were rather ordinary too, and indistinguishable from a store-bought dorayaki.<br/><br/>Speaking of desserts, when we ordered the Yamazaki Sundae Split, we weren't expecting to be presented with a sundae that was so massive that I could hide my face behind it. It should come with a warning and be listed as a main dish! At $15, it was very good value for money.<br/><br/>Tokosan delivers if you're after a night of drinking, bar snacks and good fun. Thank you for the invite!

Tokosan is a casual, yet fun Melbourne Japanese restaurant just off Chapel St, nestled in the beautiful suburb of Prahran. The interior decor is extremely vibrant – with colourful Japanese-like umbrellas hung upside off the ceiling, with a restaurant and bar area that spans all the way deep into the restaurant, with cozy booths lining the sides. It makes a perfect little Melbourne late night spot for drinks or a casual, yet not-over-the-top dinner. There were some hit and misses of the night, but overall, the mains – pork ribs and flounder karaage meant that Tokosan provided us with a nice Japanese dinner for Melbourne standards.
Split The Bill
Co-owned by former rugby league great, Brett Stewart, Tokosan is entering the hip Japanese fusion food scene. <br/><br/>The interior is very modern, it feels like a Japanese themed speakeasy slash nightclub. There's a vending machine for womens undergarments near the toilet. I was hoping this was not because the food was going to have a negative effect on me haha (only joking) This is probably a nod to the random vending machines that frequent Japan. <br/><br/>We were invited by the owners to try the menu. We were greeted with a cocktail on arrival. They were large and filling. <br/><br/>The food was okay. Their traditional japanese fare were good. Seared tuna and their handrolls were done well. The bao burgers, the bao were on the dry side, and needed more sauce. The dessert in the giant wine glass was a good idea, but needs refinement. Kids would love it. <br/><br/>All in all, this feels like a Japanese night club with food.
DAMMIT JANET I LOVE FOOD
Tokosan is one of those places you'll want to return to again and again. Lots of space, delicious food and a great atmosphere/decor (think upside down umbrellas, colourful Japanese signage and there's even an underwear vending machine!) They also offer $1 oysters on Mondays, all you can eat sushi for $20 on Tuesdays and bottomless booze with their Sunday brunch. Their Japanese street-style menu is designed for sharing and while everything we sampled was delicious, the wagyu cheese bao-gers were my favourite (such soft bao buns!)<br/><br/>Big thanks to Tokosan for inviting us to visit!

My partner and I dined here for dinner. This place is fun w Japanese umbrellas hanging from the ceiling to a karaoke room and a great bar! Woo hoo hahaha <br/><br/>We were seated in a booth which was really comfortable and we started w a cocktail each and OMGosh they were really good! I had a Pai Mei which was amazing and my partner tried the Benita Green which was sweet but tasty. <br/><br/>We ordered a range of dishes including the seared tuna sashimi which was superb, Takoyaki squid which were just as good. The Chicken Katsu w gravy was the best one I’ve eaten outside of Japan. <br/><br/>Another highlight was the vegetarian inside out roll and the flounder karaage was at another level. Just perfect! <br/><br/>We had a great night and although it was a weeknight I was surprised to see this place only half full although it was a cold night. This place is definitely worth a visit and we were so impressed we are heading back soon so keep an eye out for for some more pics. <br/><br/>I would also like to thank Tokosan for the invite to visit their restaurant.

I really loved Toko so I really wanted to love Tokosan equally as much.<br/>I do like the new look with the modern, quirky and cute decor. Love the decorations and the Japanese touches - especially the Hello Kitty decor in the bathrooms, the Umbrellas on the ceiling, and the - and I did a double take when I saw it - UNDERWEAR VENDING MACHINE. Ahhh I miss Tokyo!<br/><br/>The food was unfortunately quite unremarkable. I don't have anything bad to say about the food but the menu was not very exciting to me, and the dishes were just average and unmemorable. <br/><br/>The night I visited Tokosan they were somewhat understaffed so it the service was quite inattentive. Our dishes were so staggered that we had to check on our dishes a few times to ensure they were still coming. This was disappointing compared to the great service received from the previous Toko restaurant. Might have just been an off night which is understandable.

My friend and I had a celebratory dinner in the cosy and dim restaurant. It was a short walk from the train station, and we made a booking for their Tuesday $20 unlimited sushi night. We went in at 5:45pm, and was quite and not too busy, and had to leave after 90 minutes. We were also given a nice booth for our dinner. <br/><br/>The staff were really helpful, and helped us select which drink would suit our taste the most, as we prefer something on the sweeter side without the strong alcohol taste. We ordered the Aperol Spritz ($15). <br/><br/>We had a large range of sushi that were really good quality. They brought the sushi around in later platters and would tell us what it was, and we would let them know how much of which we would like. <br/><br/>We had miso soup , fried chicken, takoyaki balls and gyoza dumplings. Their dumplings were super crispy, the chicken was seasoned well and the soup had tofu and seaweed and was nice to have alongside the sushi.<br/><br/>The sushi options they had were shrimp, salmon, chicken, broccoli , tuna pork, pickled seaweed, squid, inarizushi, pickled seaweed. <br/><br/>I really enjoyed their fried chicken sushi, as it was prepared fresh it was still really warm, and flavoursome with the mayo.<br/><br/>I would highly suggest this place for a nice catch up or special occasion, as the atmosphere, staff and food are so lovely.

Went the other night with some friends after finishing work. Food was amazing. Clean restaurant with good atmosphere. Will be going back again

The concept is great, the space itself has so much potential and the food is good, but with so much competition in the area and the food here not overly exceptional, these guys really need to step it up in terms of service, which for my one and only visit, was dismal. <br/><br/>Arrived on a Friday night at 7.30pm to a near empty restaurant, with only 4-5 tables occupied. Being a big space this did impact the vibe, but as a party of 6 we were more than happy to entertain ourselves. There appeared to be more than enough staff to cover the tables sufficiently, however this turned out to be a naive assumption. <br/><br/>As multiple waiters floated around us generally avoiding eye contact or even looking in our direction, we struggled to get their attention every time we were ready to order another round of drinks. By the third time, we started getting up from our table and ordering our own drinks at the bar. And on the few occasions we could get their attention, the wait time was around 20 minutes from ordering to receiving, including bottled beers, even though we could see two people behind the bar chatting away to each other just a few metres away. With more staff on than tables occupied, the poor quality of service seemed frustratingly unjustified.  <br/><br/>As mentioned though, the food was good in terms of western style Japanese tapas, no real stand outs, but the overall experience pretty poor. There is so much potential though so really hope they come good, or perhaps it's just the consistency in a good customer experience they lack. <br/><br/>Who knows, but I won't be back.
Nay Nay
Such a beautiful location. So well styled and interior decoration was on point. Such a great Japanese street food menu. All the classic Japanese dishes were on offer. Great sizes for sharing and so well presented
Sarah
I had such high hopes for a new trendy Japanese spot! The food was good but the servings were pretty small compared to other popular Japanese restaurants on Chapel St. We also got charged corkage for a bottle of wine we ordered off the menu 🤔

A visual feast of an interior greeted as as we arrived for our invitation to try the menu at Tokosan. There was literally something to see on every surface and even the bathrooms were photo worthy, but the solid wall of street art had me sold. We felt transported to the streets of Japan. There was even a g-string vending machine!<br/><br/>Tokosan has been operating for around a year now and is mostly known for their epic all you can eat sushi nights on a Tuesday. Today thought a little less frantic although the music mix had us singing along ... clearly we needed the karaoke area. <br/><br/>The bar with its umbrella ceiling was a focal point and that’s were we started out. For drinks we started with cocktails named after Kill Bill characters. Pretty Ricki & Gogo Yubari we’re both standout cocktails but for me the Lychee juice of Pretty Ricki saw this one a winner. They also had a a good range of tap beer and wine and sake if you are happy to buy this by the bottle. <br/><br/>The food menu was well thought out and really very interesting. Standouts for me included the Crispy Squid with its amazing zesty lime aioli, the Tokosan Fried Chicken (so good we needed up ordering another) and the prawn gyoza which were beautifully crispy on the outside. Surprising dish was the miso eggplant which was initially the most polarising on the table when ordering but on tasting everyone agreed that this little dish probably the favourite dish of the evening. <br/><br/>Other exciting dishes we tried included the seared tuna sashimi with subtle truffle, the chicken katsu don, chicken yakitori skewers (sauce with these was just incredible), and who could forget the selection of delightful sushi. <br/><br/>We had a really enjoyable evening here. It’s a fun venue with relaxed staff and a fun soundtrack. Thanks so much for having us.

The little sister of Toko, Tokosan embodies a playful vibe with its vibrant umbrella decor and wall art. Cosy booths with simplistic prints for groups, and sofa seating to get you all nice and relaxed as the drinks keep coming. Staff are attentive and friendly, ensuring nothing will interfere with the good mood. With a great selection of those Japanese favourites - whether it be takoyaki or a plate of gyozas - Tokosan is bound to leave you walking out of the door satisfied, as you begin your weekend. Definitely a place to check out!
Good Food Good Mood
I was invited to Tokosan last night and quite frankly cannot fathom it’s low rating. I was utterly blown away by this stunning venue, it’s undoubtedly one of the coolest spaces in Melbourne, right down to it’s amazing hello kitty themed toilets! There’s even a luxe undercover beer garden, full points for ambiance and fit out.<br/>Full points also for cocktails (named for Kill Bill characters, I’m telling you this place just oozes cool) we loved the pretty riki and the gogo yubari. There’s also a karaoke room. Enough said.<br/>The food was unbelievable too. Full of flavour and delicious subtle little twists like the truffle on the seared tuna sashimi. The Gyoza was perfectly crunchy (a difficult feat, they are often soggy) and the yakitori were wonderfully smoky. <br/>I insisted we get the miso eggplant which some of the table were not sold on. One of my dining companions pointed out she doesn’t even like eggplant but upon trying they were swiftly all in agreement to order a second serve and announced it dish of the day. My favourite perhaps was the crispy squid which was served with a deliciously zingy lemon aioli. <br/>Note however the menu is slightly different to this which is listed on Zomato. We also tried a few types of sushi, the katsu curry and the TFC. The TFC also ended up being a dual order, yummy fried chicken with the tastiest of dipping sauces. <br/>I’ve got to say this is one of the funnest venues I’ve ever set foot in. From the colourful umbrella roof bar to the g-string vending machine it embodies the cool and unique vibe and sentiment of Japan. With the recent reopening of boutique nightclub this is the perfect pre party dining hot spot

Offering patrons an affordable taste of Japanese Street Food, Tokosan is a very trendy Modern Japanese eatery that not only dishes up tasty flavours of Japan, but cleverly pairs it with quirky and modern touches.<br/><br/>With an extensive cocktail and drinks menu alongside tasty and approachable Japanese finger food, this is a new hot spot in Prahran that shouldn’t be missed.
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
Traditional made way for modern when Toko evolved into Tokosan last year. Now a contemporary and vibrant restaurant and bar, Tokosan offers great cocktails and bites including the Salmon Inside Out Roll and the little crunchy morsels that are the Tempura Oysters.
@twogoodtoresist
The vibe inside tokosan is a lot of fun and the decor is extremely vibrant (from umbrellas on the roof to hello kitty themed toilets!) they also have a beer garden which is perfect for a summer drink. Their menu is extremely extensive (not to mention decently priced) and they even have a vegan menu to cater to all dietaries! Our top picks include the TFC, the miso eggplant and the eggplant and tofu broth. Though there wasn’t a single dish we didn’t enjoy. The cocktails (and mock tails) are great too! They also a $20 all you can eat sushi menu on a Tuesday- an absolute bargain. We’ll be back!

I have come for dinner and drinks at Tokosan on several occasions and have been pleased each time. Located on Greville St with a great outdoor seating area, Tokosan is a cool, funky, casual Japanese eatery/grill/bar that you can bring your friends for a couple of bevvys (as the Happy Hour is unreal) or celebrate an occasion as the outdoor area is beautiful. Tokosan has a good selection of beer/wine and the Happy Hour specials are the best I've seen anywhere!

With the creative graffiti on the wall this bar and the hanging Japanese umbrellas above the bar, this place surely stands out among other. The restaurant/bar is clean and spacious;. It’s versatile spot to chill with friends in the bar, dine in or even to have private function in secluded area *karaoke is available.

Tried Sushi Tuesday and wow. Cool atmosphere, unlimited sushi and the cocktails were sublime. Came back Friday night to try the menu, 1st class food and awesome wines. Will be back again and again.

Went to the All you can eat sushi Tuesday. Was very disappointed with the quality of the sushi. The rice was mushy as heck and had a lot of grains where it was undercooked I wanted to stay longer to get my $20 worth but left early cause the quality of sushi just got worse and worse. Got to admit Sushi Sushi at the supermarket taste way better. <br/><br/>How it all worked was they have a person with a large platter go to each table and put 2-5 bits of sushi per plate per round. Because my table was the furthest from the kitchen it would take longer to get to me because they would run out, sometimes I had to wait for 15 minutes between rounds. I'll wont' be coming back here again though the atmosphere and bar was quite nice.
Eating With Ebony
To be honest I was a bit nervous coming here after seeing all the negative reviews. But I honestly think they have taken the feedback on board! My friend and I came on Tuesday for the all you can eat sushi for $20! We got a lot of different types of sushi and they were coming over quite frequently. My favourite was the chicken ones. The staff were super friendly and made sure we were always comfortable. Only downside wasn't to do with the restaurant. It was trying to find a park! I recommend visiting this place just make sure you make a booking through the Dimmi website 🍱😊 also we got edamame and that was delicious.
Black Widow
Great place to hang out and catch up with friends ..loved the music and cocktails on offer (kill bill ones a fav 🙃), also tried some of the new vegan menu which was delish. Will visit again next time in Melb to try some of the other dishes and cocktails of course 😂

Best restaurant I have been to in a very long time! Have been here a few times and it is consistently 5 star worthy. Food is out of this world. Service is incredible. The new vegan menu is packed with great options that are tasty, filling and very well priced. My favourites have been the sweet eggplant miso and the tofu steak. Cant wait to head back there to try some other amazing creations!

I’m from Sydney, but anytime I’m in Melbourne You’ll find me in Tokosan. Their wagyu cheese burger is mouth watering and my brother can’t resist their tokosan fried chicken- FYI Their list of mains is difficult to choose from(you’ll want everything) . Can’t wait for our next trip down!

As to follow the other similar review on the all you can eat. Not acceptable, wait for 30 mins for a seat, wasn't too busy at all. $20 for 4 piece of sushi.. I dont know, Maybe I should have just ordered off the standard menu like usual. The managers have failed to comply to the elements a restaurant needs. Actually why not charge us $60 pp and let us eat decent food. Toko is only degrading what reputation they have built. I have visited their main shop in Surrey Hills and along with the Tokonoma, its great. However the Melbourne branch needs some serious attension.<br/> <br/><br/>second review following the above.<br/><br/>Gave the guys a try again, since last was not so good and seems their main focus is more dining than all you can eat.<br/><br/>Fusion.. yea, some dishes which seemed a combination of many things, sometimes feel better individually than all put together. <br/><br/>Wasnt so good since maybe me and my partner is getting over the whole "FUSION" this "FUSION" that.. Looking for more authentic and straight forward dishes.<br/><br/>Service seemed have improved but not as we expect for a fine dine aiming restaurant. Hard to tell whether the venue is fine dine or casual.. I think casual with a fine dine price..<br/><br/>Good cocktail list and drinks but can be found elsewhere with a better overall..<br/><br/>Until next time, (Sydney TOKO in Surrey Hills is still our favorite)

Bad service and horrible food! Came here for the all you can eat sushi but left disappointed and hungry. The all you can eat is one guy walking around with a plate of sushi every 15-20 minutes with only 3 varieties. Was only allowed 3-4 pieces of sushi each time as the tiny plate was meant to cater for the whole restaurant. The rice in the sushi was uncooked and crunchy, honestly would’ve rather got a roll of sushi from a foodcourt for $2.50 and save myself the time and money.

Was extremely disappointed and left hangry!<br/><br/>Firstly, we booked a week prior for a table of 8 people and arrived on time and were still kept waiting.<br/>We were then told that we do not get to choose what sushi we can have as part of the all you can eat sushi tuesdays (staff didn’t even ask us if anyone had allergies). The menu states all you can eat sushi but really it is only 7-8 small pieces of sushi and a crab stick.<br/>The rice was also way undercooked, it tasted like it was pan fried. <br/>After this deeply upsetting meal we then calmly tried discussing with the staff upon paying about false advertising for “all you can eat” and they did not care one bit about our feedback. <br/><br/>Would definitely not recommend this place!

Decor is nice as you walk in but that's about it. Ignored by staff and then waited 15 mins to be seated despite having booked a week in advance. <br/><br/>Staff were rude and service was horrible. Rice was crunchy and the portion size wasn't that great. Nothing special, plenty of great restaurants in Melbourne to go to.<br/><br/>

Firstly the place had nice vibes, towards the kitchen it was more dimly lit and offered a more quiet atmosphere. Toward the front it was brighter with a the sun and nice breeze coming in. Friendly enough waitresses that were able to find us a table despite our lack of a booking, and explained how the all you can eat menu worked. Good first impressions. A waiter then comes around with giant plates, an assortment of either cut up hand rolls or nigiri. first round was abundant, each of us getting 6-7 pieces. Ordinary stuff, nothing fancy, but we didn't come in expecting high grade sushi, we're here for a cheap, FULFILLING meal. More sushi sushi than Minamishima. <br/><br/>And then food might as well have stopped there. Despite having empty plates the waiter rarely came around and even then with a small assortment of what was left over. We thought, "maybe the waiter thinks we're full?", so politely asked if there was more nigiri, we were still interested, despite his promise to come around when more was available, we saw time and time again he was visiting other tables and would not even look in our direction. Apparently 7 - 8 pieces of sushi equates to "all you can eat".<br/><br/>If you can not truly offer all you can eat, and attempt to limit how much each customer wants and is able to eat by blatantly ignoring them, then don't offer the deal.

Came to tokosan to try the all you can eat sushi Tuesdays. We arrived as a group of 3 around 7pm without a booking thinking its a Tues, it'll be fine. The waitress gave us a snobby eye when we said we didnt have a booking and said "I'll see what I can do" despite the fact that half the restaurant was empty and there was plenty of seating! <br/><br/>When we got a seated, we were told that they needed it back in about an hour. We agreed and sat down. Water was self serve but no jugs were available. We had to ask for water, soy sauce and wasabi all on separate occasions. The sushi comes around with a guy carrying a tray and you just ask for whatever you want. The fish was so thinly sliced and fell off the mountain of rice as soon you picked it up. The varieties that came around were all the cheapest kinds, dont come here looking for fancy nigiri, its just a slice of raw fish and rice. The sushi rolls were also 90% rice and 10% filling. You get full very quickly just on rice. We also ordered the takoyaki which were not great and the fried chicken which was okay.<br/><br/>At the hour mark, mid-chew, we were told to vacate as the next booking was arriving in 5-10mins. We looked around and yep, there was still 5 tables visibly clean and empty surrounding us. Wow, we were in disbelief so we swallowed our mouthful and left in a hurry. If you like snobby waiters, terrible service & enjoy eating a lot of rice and not much else, then go to tokosan. I will not be going here again.

TLDR: was on wait list, staff said wont be too long - waited 2hrs, didn't get called back and the staff were unapologetic even though they had plenty of tables ready and food we came for ran out.<br/><br/>If there were a negative rating option, this place deserves it. My friends and I arrived at 7:15pm to try out their all you can eat temaki, but what we didn't expect was the terrible service and unapologetic staff at the this place. Fair enough there was a long wait list, so we expected to wait for a while but they did not even call us back. We even checked back an hour later to see how we were going on the list. 4 small groups ahead of us - alright, we decided to wait a little longer because there were at least 4 tables free and I was assured by the host that it probably won't be too long either. <br/><br/>9pm rolls by and we were really hungry at this point, still no call and when we walk back into Tokosan, what do we see - plenty of clean empty tables and still no call. Oh, and the temaki ran out. The host gave some excuse about her about to call us and maybe this would be believable if the place actually looked super busy so she didn't have the time, or even been at her post - but she wasn't. She then tried to save herself by saying there was a table free now if we wanted and that she had said that there was no guarantee that the wait list would move quickly.. I'm sorry, but it's 9pm, you've actually told us that it wouldn't be too long an hour ago and you can't just have contradicting statements now. <br/><br/>Being hangry aside, I feel we had been patient enough with this place, only to be slammed by the fact that there were free seats all along and the wait list was literally ineffective. That fueled by the fact that we were literally the only people they didn't call on the wait list and having a host that didn't seem to care that we've waited almost 2 hrs just pushes it over the top. I may not have eaten or drank here, but I definitely won't be heading to this place ever again.

Really cool bar and restaurant. Friendly staff, great cocktails and a nice all round vibe. The restaurant is comfortable and they have an awesome garden out the back.<br/><br/>The food is always on point and has a good variety and modern take on several dishes.<br/><br/>All round great establishment for dinner or drinks or both!

Had the wagyu cheese burger and the chicken katsu curry. The wagyu cheese burger had pickles, onions, lettuce, mustard, jap-mayo and tommy sauce (their own take of tomato sauce?). The patty was well seasoned with its savoury profile balanced with the combination of the ever so slightly tangy and mustardy flavours. Also the bun was soft and not dry. However the downside was that the patty was too small; not only was the circumference of the patty nowhere near the bun, but was also quite thin. <br/><br/>As for the chicken katsu, it was a crumb coated thigh fillet with skin on, cut into seven pieces with some Japanese curry ketchup drizzled on top along with some white sesame seeds. The outer coating was thin and crisp and the chicken was quite tender and juicy; it didn’t feel greasy at all. For the ketchup sauce, the curry flavour was very mild hence would have liked a bit more on the chicken katsu.<br/><br/>Overall the meal was alright; it was tasty but is on the pricier end considering the portion size; and the ratio of bun to patty and the meat to sauce was not quite balanced.

Recently opened, Tokosan is a casual Japanese bar and restaurant whose uber cool vibes and nightlife ambience suitably classify it as the sassy ‘little sister’ of popular Japanese restaurant, Toko, which recently closed to make way for Tokosan.
