Review Eugenie French Cake Shop - Prahran

Karishma Kulkarni
My friend and I went for coffee and cake yesterday. Great location right outside prahran market - rightfully deserves the title of best chocolate eclairs. It was just bursting with cream. We also had a sour cherry Danish and pies. Everything was good. I got coffee and takeaway orange cake - no complaints. The service was with a smile. The shop is not much to look at - but take yourself inside. Another lady who visited recommended the chocolate mousse cake - amazing she said. Also, prices are better than in the area. Try it out.

The smell of this place brought me in. I've never noticed it before. The coffee was really good and the ham and cheese croissant, delicious! I also bought a small apple pie but haven't eaten that yet. Looks amazing.

Always tempted into patisseries by delicious cakes in window displays, on this occasion it was a glistening chocolate eclair that caught my eye. The funky treble clef also helped seduce me in. The lady working here was really nice and the pricing was quite good. There was a decent array of sweets and pies, but the eclair was my choice. The choux pastry was lovely, and I really enjoyed the creamy filling. It was huge, so perfect for sharing; and definitely a yummy afternoon tea treat. Eugenie patisserie has some great qualities, and I would be happy to try more of their treats.

Had some almond tart and it's good. Regarding this shop, it's at the heart of top suburbs of Melbourne, but doesn't draw attention. (exteriors & interiors too). A bit of touch up is much needed, and can really shine this place. Also, Not sure if the staff is the actual, or regular staff. But didn't talk at all, inspite i initiated a chat. So ratings are - Staff - does the job - 3/5 Product - so far, generic experience - 4/5 Location - 5/5 Ambiance - 3/5

Bought this cake for a socially distanced Easter and it was great! Absolutely pretty to look at, glazed on the outside with super thin orange slices. It kept in the fridge really well for a couple days and then when we cut it, it was super moist inside. Best orange and poppyseed cake I've had in ages from a lovely local bakery.

A great bakery with delicious cakes, different tarts, escargot, and lots of other stuff. Located opposite of Prahran market. Lovely and friendly staff. I’m a regular and strongly recommend them. The coffee is ok but not the best in the area.

Their croissants are delicious - buttery, flaky & perfect! The little assorted biscuit bags on the counter top are alright - wouldn’t purchase them again! Good service. Will surely be frequenting this place!

I just bought the most delicious nenish tart with the pink and chocolate icing & cream inside I haven’t had a good one since I first had them bought for me when I was a child. This one was delicious!! We are going to be back for more & will make it a place for me & my daughter to buy treats. Such a happy day.

Food: Found this place by chance one day when nowhere else was open, and now we're regulars. Their cakes are gorgeous - we particularly love the almond friands, which I actually could eat 100 of every day, but they do pretty little jam tarts with crispy pastry and beautifully crafted desserts and biscuits too. Coffee is the only let down - it's fine, but not excellent.

Atmosphere/service: There are a couple of tables inside and a few out on the street. We will often try to sit in if there is space, but it's definitely more of a takeaway bakery. Space is very limited and the few tables that are there only seat 2 people. Service is efficient and friendly, not much chit-chat, mostly due to the nature of the place, but pleasant and smiley.

Would I recommend it: Yes! Their cakes are spot on. Don't go for the coffee, or fancy service, but if you want delicious, classic baked goods, this is a real hidden gem! Quality surpasses many of the flashier places on nearby Chapel Street, but you'd walk past this bakery 10 times before you even realised it was there.

Stumbled across this little gem after visiting the Prahran Markets - the smell of coffee and gorgeous array of cakes in the window tempted me in. Sit inside or take away. Hot pies and savoury pastries available. We ate a palmier which was light and flaky and delicious. So many treats on offer including neenish tarts, vanilla slices and whole cakes. Lovely service and the store is old but immaculate. Try them fir well priced treats.

Food 1.5: delicious sweet & savoury pastries ... good quality meat filling (pie)
Decors 1: to me, it's a combination of European (shelf set up) and Vietnamese Asian (table area and of course service!) 🙂
Service 1.5: Superb service 🤗

This shop used to be one of my favourite bakeries in Prahran. They had the most divine and moist lamingtons which I would order regularly. Then I feel like they changed owners or something, because the lamingtons became noticeably dry and smaller in size. I stopped coming for a while. I feel that the cakes (chocolate mousse, orange poppyseed) are still excellent but the smaller baked goods (friands, brownies) have lost a bit of quality. I hope they haven't cut back on the quality of ingredients to save on costs, but I suspect this is what happened.

Not really French, but a French-style cake shop, Eugenie is a small shop located in front of the Prahran Market.

Hits -
>I especially like their pastries (the apricot danish above all), their palmiers and escargots.
> Their pies because they are very tasty and the filling is consistent not just thickened gravy.
>The friendliness of the staff.
> Good prices

Misses -
< Their cakes look very pretty but they are not my cup of tea because they are a bit too sweet and dense to me. Average. However their rum balls are quite nice.
< Average coffee
< I asked for ice for my coffee and they did not have any.

Diana. Can highly recommend the rum balls here, the best since leaving the Uk many years ago, absolutely delish, not only that the cakes are all pretty inexpensive for the qualty

Disappointed. We ordered family size quiches and they said we could feed 6 to 8 persons per quiches but then when we received the quiches they could not feed more than 4... And the taste was not as good as the french one... :(

Great Find. It is a long time since I have bought from Eugenie's but have just enjoyed a delicious pie and small cake. Both were excellent and very good value for money. I will be ordering a large birthday cake from them in the next couple of weeks. They are beautifully and tastefully decorated and reasonably priced. Service was very friendly and personable.

Best Quiche Around. I shouldn't be spreading this as I get very disappointed when they run out, but the quiches at Euginie are fantastic. My favourite is the salmon. No, not tinned, but fresh and aromatic throughout the quiche. Just leave one for me, in the family size!
P.S. When someone begins their review with an "Unbelievably Disappointing" caption, I assume there is an axe to grind, somewhat out of proportion with the actual experience,or a rival. The staff at Euginie would always address any quality issues in the most courteous and professional way, and are after all, human.

Fantastic little bakery with beautiful, reasonably-priced quiches and cakes. Ordered a mud cake and a lemon tart for a work function & both were delicious & beautifully presented.

I love food, and I only eat the best. I have eaten EVERYWHERE this side of town and I can say without a doubt that, this bakery makes the Best croissant in east Melbourne, IF NOT the city. They sell out just after midday so make sure you get in early and grab at least two for yourself because they are that good. Do not drive past chapel street without stopping by Eugenie for a croissant

Unbelievably disappointing.... Bought the lemon meringue pie and baked cheesecake, and all I can say is I took one bite of each and threw the rest out (and I am usually not one to waste ANY food)

The shortcrust on the meringue pie was stale, lemon filling was gluggy/glue like (also very very sweet), and that meringue was my goodness was underwhipped and definitely not enough sugar because it was extremely foamy.
Cheesecake base was an inch thick and soft, and the cheese filling was grainy and well over-baked.

I love my sweets and definitely will not be heading back to Eugenie.

Nice, but overshadowed. This is a small but good French-influenced bakery, great-looking products, pleasant on the couple of times we bought patisseries there. The big problem with Eugenie is that it's so close to Prahran Market, which is where we'd usually be shopping. And when you're at the market, with its plethora of places for pastries, it's hard to be bothered to dodge traffic and walk across Commercial Road to visit yet another bakery. More's the pity for Eugenie.
