Review Hako Sushi - Prahran

Lorelei Carneiro
This was a complete disappointment. Half of it went on the bin. The don was dry, the soup was salty and very sour - quite strong to the taste...

Ordered teriyaki salmon bentobox from Ubereats. The package is so careful and the portion is quite a lot. Delicious side dishes, the only downside is salmon was a little bit dry.

Best sushi in Chapel. Amazing Miso soup and Curry don...

Absolutely LOVE Hako Sushi. Favourite Japanese in town, always so delicious and great value for money. You get an array of amazing tasting, beautiful food to try and serving sizes are never stingy. Can’t recommend enough! We usually order on Uber eats but any time we’ve gone in the service has been awesome too. A lot of love in this food.

The current average google rating is too low. THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD ORDER: - Crispy Mayo $10.5 - Yaki Udon Noodles $13 - Chicken Omelette on Rice $8.5 - Chicken Katsu Curry on Rice $13 Yeah it is THAT CHEAP! These dishes are so fantastic and cheap I sometimes just get two just so i can keep one and eat it later for dinner. I have also tried the burgers and they are quite good, the sushi is okay (but why would you get those when you have access to these delicious other dishes). I actually sometimes think this place is too good to be true with how cheap and good it is. [EDIT: Prices have adjusted over time]

I ordered chicken katsu curry udon, Teriyaki chicken udon soup and sushi rolls. Fresh sushi rolls and Pretty good food qualities and kind owner and employees!! One thing I wasn't happy with, was the amount of food was not good enough for an adult.

Ordered bento boxes featuring “sushi” and other goodies. What do we get? CARROT sushi, pickled grated carrot, tempura carrot and store-bought potato salad. The chicken/rice component was dry and just average. Please declare clearly on your UberEats what is in the bento, not just disrespect your customers like this

Had salmon sashimi plate with friends yesterday. It was fresh and delicious. The price and amount of foods were decent. Will def be back. Just added as my fav Japanese restaurant in melb !!!!!!

Thank you for your kind service. I am always satisfied with the price and the food. It tastes good, too. It's a great food to take out on my own day.

Ordered sushi & it was stale, with a foul ordour. It was obvious that the sushi was past it use by date. Will contact local counsel.
It was very disappointing.

I should’ve wrote the review long time ago. Just have a chance to do it now. Food is amazing, price is okay and even though the place is small but it’s also convenient, easy to find as its near Prahran train station. The cashier was super friendly

Ordered Hako Sushi for lunch from Deliveroo today and was pleasantly surprised. Service didn’t take too long, the hot foot came hot and the cold food came in a separate container with ice packs to keep it cold- I thought this was a great touch. The food was really tasty and reasonable portion sizes for reasonable prices! Will definitely order from here again!

Update:
Ordered from here again and was disappointed! The tuna didn’t come with ice packs to keep it cold, the coke was room temperature, and the salad was so measly! I was really disappointed.

We ordered in last night, my partner and I ordered a chicken katsu curry each which came with a miso soup. The curry had a lot of flavour with chunks of carrot, zucchini and potato in it, the chicken schnitzel was nice too. I don't normally order miso (I don't really like it) but this came as a side and I managed to have a few mouthfuls of it and it was nice. I'd happily order from here again.

We get takeaway regularly from Hako. It's really fresh food at good prices. The teriyaki chicken don, sashimi, panko and tempura prawns are really good. Would be good to see more variety on the menu but what they do they do really well! Great little spot on Chapel st!

Terrible. Ramen broth was too sweet and not nice at all. I threw it away after a few bites and ordered a pizza.

Ramen contents was pretty underwhelming too. Boiled beef and cabbage I think.

The tofu curry from here is very substantial, it's got a generous amount of tofu strewn without and tastes delicious, the veggies all tasted good and well cooked, comes with a miso soup on the side too. Not the greatest Japanese out there but does the job.

Totally and absolutely impressed!! Even more impressed by the fact that this was the only sushi place actually open along Chapel Street on a Sunday, so even more thankful. :)

All ingredients and ordered items were incredibly fresh and admittedly some of the best sushi, sashimi, seaweed salad and edamame that my wife and I have ever tasted. Highly recommended, even for takeaway.

The large dirty plastic bottles by the door didn't impress nor did the two day old papers. The seafood udon was pretty good and not over salted. Service was detached.
Barley And Hops
Had some takeaway from here as the place is very casual and not a place to sit down for dinner unless you're on your own. The sashimi was quite good but the sushi was terrible mainly due to the mayonnaise which was sour and way too much.

Opened on Easter Sunday, really enjoyed the Katsu curry and the sashimi bimbimbab! The ingredients were fresh and well cooked. The only issue that detracted was the use of plastic utensils and cutlery that cheapened an otherwise enjoyable, delicious experience. Great value and atmosphere.

I had okonomiyaki before. Totally fake japanese food. Here s staff all Korean people. I don't understand why Korean people running japanese restaurant?

After a trip over at the Prahran markets, I’m always ready for a feed and decided to hit up Hako Sushi, one of the cheap, quick Japanese options nearby. I’ve been previously for the sushi offerings which are good and on this occasion I dined it for a full blown hot meal. I ordered the teriyaki chicken and this came with miso. I liked the dish and the chicken was well grilled with a tasty, sweet and savoury sauce. The vegetables were a bit basic but the additional miso soup for the price made for good value. Would return if around but not the most memorable meal from the archives.

The sushi rolls are always fresh and delicious. The rice is seasoned well and has good texture. The restaurant is conveniently located on Chapel St and not pretentious. Service is simple and friendly. It's easy to drop in for a snack or sit down for a longer meal. I'd recommend their salmon brown rice roll, it's delicious!

Ordered from Deliveroo for the first time.
Food came well packed and preserved, we especially enjoyed the bento box - so good for delivery!
We ordered the vegetarian Gyoza but got something else which was still nice.
The food in the bento box was delicious! Fresh, tasty and with nice proportions, definitely for the price.
The Udon beef soup came with no soup, which was why I ordered it. But it was still very tasty.
I hope to visit once and try more of their dishes.

Ordered delivery on a weeknight, which arrived in reasonable time and the katsu curry was quite good. Ramen soup came without the soup component however which is pretty inexcusable.
World In A Bite
Cheap & tasty sushi - chickens and salmon are fresh - better than pink ginger & kaoli.

Best brown rice prawn tempura roll ever! It's a big call but personally I haven't tasted a better prawn tempura in Melbourne. Pork Katsu bento box is pretty good. The only down side would be the lack of attention to service, honestly it's probably been about 30+ times that I've been there ordered sushi and never got any soy sauce, wasabi or ginger (even though I ask for it every single time) it's quite frustrating but in saying so I've mentioned it to the owner couple of times and in return he does give free miso soup every now and then.
Impress Me
This small Japanese restaurant is great, have been there a few times now and always impressed. Well priced, tasty food, great presentation especially of the sushi and sashimi.

Hako Sushi a cute express Japanese/Korean style eatery on Chapel Street. When I walked in, I noticed the staff were Korean, so I was excited to eat some. (The food, not the staff.)

Atrocious service. The takeaway sushi pack had relatively fresh sashimi and sushi rolls - which I was pleased about. However, the service was appalling!! This has got to be one of the worst "Japanese" places that I have ever been to.

Oh, and before I forget, I was also short changed.

Definitely won't be going back.
Tony
Really fresh sushi in simple surroundings. Good quality cuts in their sushi and great wasabi!
Corey
Services were okay, but the food was terrible!

Takeaway sashimi, sushi & nigiri - they were delicious, fresh, so taaty! 3 small platters were more than enough for 2 people. First time sushi on Chapel, probably won't try anywhere else now.

Average.... The food is ok, price is ok, but the service is terrible. I used to go to this place quite a bit, but lately the service has dropped. Not friendly or gracious about the fact you're spending money there. I guess what killed it for me was the fact that when I bought 3 sushi rolls they asked for an extra 50c for wasabi... I eat a lot of sushi and have never once been asked to pay for wasabi with my order. With options like Aka Tombo over the road, Matsuri up High St, (both much better, and run by Japanese people) or even Kaaoli just opposite and up a bit on Chapel, I don't see myself returning anytime soon.

Chicken katsu bento $11. Good value, cooked to order and delicious.

Almost gave a bad review for the service. We waited so so long for our food (two bentos). Mine was ready first before my boyfriends so ultimately it came out lukewarm. On a cold winters night I was dissapointed, especially because it was a weeknight and we were only the second customers. The food was good though and I wolfed it all down being starving. I said I liked it based on the food and that they probably were having a bad night.

A pleasant surprise. Looking for a quick Japanese meal before an appointment we headed into Hako sushi based on the votes on urbanspoon. In the evening it was quiet however the food was cooked freshly and all components of our bento boxes (chicken karaage and teppanyaki chicken) were flavoursome and very agreeable. The quantity and quality of food was above average for the price. The salmon salad (salmon sashimi) was fresh and good value for money. Although it is Koreans masquerading as Japanese the food and service was spot-on. Will return.

The chicken kato bento box was brilliant. Cheap and fresh - prefect for a quick lunch

Best Vegetarian Bento i've had in Melbourne (also better than most i ate in Japan!!) - I work just around the corder and this place friendly, quick and super delicious!
The staff are really friendly - I'm almost at the point of asking for 'the usual' - Keep up the good work!

Fast, filling, delicious and inexpensive Japanese. A wide variety of don and bento sets to choose from to satisfy a range of tastes.
