So much better than the cbd branch. Ambience, service, speed is way better. Dumplings had nice plump filling

This is my favourite dumpling place at chapel street. Dumplings are really little pockets of heaven. Tasty and succulent mince pork surrounded by delicious soup. Don’t forget to dip it in a vinegar-chilli oil combo for that extra kick. The san jian bao here is equally amazing, with its crispy base! Skip the other dishes here, these two are the most consistent! We ordered the hot and sour soup noodles for a change and the combination didn’t work.. the noodles didn’t soak up the soup and tasted bland, while the soup itself wasn’t tasty. I would still come back for the dumplings though - Perfect winter remedy!
We had the shanghai fried noodles, fried rice and dumplings. The noodles and dumplings were really tasty. I am coming back to try their other dishes next time.
Yum yum yum! I order from here often on uber eats. I’ve never actually dined in, despite living nearby. I organised a big event here for 20+ people tonight. Very accommodating management. The staff did a good job as it became quite busy around 8pm. My favourite main dish of the night was the Stir-Fried Shelled Shrimp with salted egg yolk. Melt in your mouth deliciousness and would highly recommend. Other dishes ordered included: Pan fried wonton, pan fried pork dumplings, special fried rice, beef fillet (not a huge fan as was too sour for my liking), Pork Xiao long bao, lemon chicken & Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. Decor and atmosphere are great. Overall a great experience and will definitely be coming back! Thanks!
We had some dumplings and a few main meals to share. They were all good, but nothing special.
the service was great - all the staff were very attentive and helpful.
The place itself is quite nice and open. I might come back :p
Been here for early dinner. I got
Shanghai traditional Pan-Fried Mini Buns: amazing, there’s a little hint of alcohol inside as well, and the bottom is very crunchy, i really like this dish
Boiled Chicken and Prawn Dumplings: the batter is quite thick but the filling is really delicious
Seaweed and egg soup: Clear and light soup, go well with salty main dish
Stew chicken and mushroom claypot: Not so oily, very well-seasoned if you have rice and soup on the side.
Overall, i really like the place. Recommended
We ordered xiao long bao, chicken and prawn dumpling, and special fried rice. What I like is their chili oil sauce that is actually spicy, so when I ate the dumpling with the sauce it gave this rich flavour that I don't normally get from other dumpling places. From all three dishes that I ordered, I recommend the special fried rice. It has big portion, it's simple yet really tasty.
Had some lovely food at Shanghai Dragon Dumpling House with my partner last night. The restaurant was pretty empty so we were served quickly and our food arrived fast. Only downfall was that they bought out the meat dishes before the rice & dumplings. Great value for money and lots of choice too!
There's an influx of Oyster sauce in Melbourne people ...
Must be cheap judging by the generous serving on our Vegetable orders.... 😁 check photos.
Formerly was a Malaysian restaurant if I'm not mistaken, taken over by the Shanghai Dragon group as an extension of their City restaurant.
Modernly fitted, with a bit of that China mainland flavour. Clear glass window for you to see those dumplings being created by the two lady masters dumpling maker. Plenty of room for more than 60/70 patrons and you won't be squeezed.
Plenty of food on the Menu and service too, albeit communication was a bit difficult and their lack of dumpling knowledge; they can't tell which dumpling that they are delivering to our table. But, we soldiered on demolishing our orders 😁 there were plenty of it. Although those vegetables were drowned in sauce and rather ordinary, their dumplings are above average, some are unique, with peanut sauce and definitely good value for money too.
Enjoyable dumpling dinner as always. JT-24/08/2017.
Great for a night out with some good Chinese food that is very easy on the wallet. Staff is welcoming and food gets to your table quickly. Their selection of dumplings is nice with the pan fried ones being my favourite. The Shanghai special ice cream cake was new to me, but would probably give it a miss on my next visit.
Food (8/10): this is my go to dumpling place since it's cheap for the amount you get. I've been here many times and the only thing you should order are the xiao long Bao and steamed/panfried dumplings. I do not recommend the noodle or rice dishes as they are poorly cooked and are extremely salty. It's really difficult to find a good authentic dumpling place around prahran without the premium price tag but this is the place for cheap eats.
Service (7/10): don't expect amazing service as the food is so cheap. The staff however are very attentive compared to other higher end restaurants.
Ambience (8/10): this restaurant looks premium and doesn't look run down like most other dumpling restaurants.
Came for dinner it was really good than I thought. Especially mapo tofu was my favourite:)
Nice flavour sauce, a bit chilli taste which is good hot level for me.
Thank you so much !!!!!
Cheap easy dumplings which came out super fast! I'm actually surprised this place ain't jam packed every night! It's a big call but this place has my favourite XiaoLong Baos! Very clean and juicy!
Keep up the awesome work guys/girls
Decided to order in tonight via Foodora and wasn't disappointed. We ordered some pan-fried chicken and prawn dumplings, beef in pepper sauce, and special fried rice.
The dumplings were cooked well and tasted great and we look forward to enjoying more of these in the future. The beef in pepper sauce was superb, with the sauce not being spicy or hot in any fashion at all - unfortunately, some parts of the beef were tough and chewy, but overall this was negligible. And finally the special fried rice was excellent, although it was fairly oily on it's own (very tasty still though) - mixed with the pepper sauce from the beef, brilliant!! 👍🏻
Not a bad place, all dumplings we had were juicy and fresh and service was good. Probably one of the better dumpling outlets on Chapel St. We will return again.
It's really nice to sit in a dumpling restaurant and not have to be cheek to jowl with other patrons. Don't get me wrong, that experience has its own benefits, but coming to Shanghai Dragon is a more relaxed and gentle experience. Lovely decor, ample seats and a respectful amount of room between tables and booths was really appealing.
Our waiter was very professional. Took our order by memory. Couldn't fault the service.
Shanghai noodles were delicious. The Xiao Long Bao were pretty good too. Thin pastry, lovely broth inside. The pan fried pork buns were probably the stand out for me. I've never had them done so nice in Australia and the scallion pancake was the best I've had in Australia too.. pricey on the menu. Forget the price, just order it.
That left the Mapo Tofu. Oh dear. What a disaster. It was gluggsville. The dish was overwhelmingly drowned in a thick brown sauce robbing the dish of any delicacy. This interpretation is the worst I've ever had and, and I've had this dish across continents and seen many interpretations. There has got to be someone in that kitchen that knows how to prepare and present this dish, but today must have been his day off.
Everything else though is fantastic about this place. Excellent value for money given the overall food quality, service and ambience. I'll definately be back but I won't be ordering the Mapo Tofu. That cost this review a whole point!
They should be rated higher. Delicious, good prices and food comes quick!
When you're with your boys and you wanna have something relatively cheap, filling and byo...nothing beats dumplings. We happen to be in Prahran and SDDH was a random place we just happen to past by and decided to go into. And what a pleasant surprise- the dumplings were great and would give Shanghai Street and Hu Tong a run for their money. The skin on the steamed dumps were silky smooth, and they had one that was served with peanut sauce which was different, yet works. The xiao long bao was delicious, with the warm broth packed with flavour. We had an awesome catchup-drinking session, and the myriad of dumplings here were the perfect dishes to accompany that. Great value for money, will be back to try other dishes.
Shanghai Dragon Dumplings have finally made it to the south side. Its one of my Chinatown faves, but this resto takes the Chinatown menu and takes it to a different looking location. This one is big and bright and on bustling Chapel St. Although you would not know because it is so quiet inside (although I was there awkwardly before dinner time). This is a great change to many establishments blaring music so loud you can hear it down the street.
As in the city, I can always recommend the Pork Xiao Long Bao, Mapo Tofu and any sort of steamed green. The dumplings are hot and soupy and work out to about $1 each, which is incredible value, especially considering the quality. These xiao long bao are easily up there with the best of them (and my favourites) in Melbourne.
Wash it down with a green tea, which is served at perfect temperature and very delicious. It did not go bitter throughout the course of the meal, which is remarkable.
You can also see chefs in the back of the restaurant making the dumplings, but you cannot see their hands if you are sitting down. This is not an issue. I could recommend anybody eating here with any one. I'll also keep an eye out for them on Foodora, as I found out in store that they also deliver. And they really delivered on this meal, five stars.
I have burned about 481 calories today on my practice run. It may not have been great but it was an easy run. At least I got my mojo back which is great. So of course to replenish the carbs used and the calories burned I had dumplings. The place is in Prahran on Chapel st and there is one in the city.
Food here are really delicious, I have no idea why people have bad reviews. I went to the store few times, and staff are really friend.
Shanghai Dragon Dumpling
👧Staff are lovely, friendly, helpful
🥘 Food is delicious, flavoursome,’and addictive. Make sure you try their drunken noodles, my favourite.
💰 Prices are reasonable especially for the quantity of food you are getting
✔️There is a large selection of good, something to suit all dietary requirements. I love to get several dishes and do share plates, it allows you to try everything.
Very solid dumpling experience. Super juicy and quite tasty. Quick service and the food usually comes out quite quickly. It's definitely a Chinese style of food with no fusion elements. Not a massive selection of alcoholic beverages. Would come back when I'm in town.
On chapel street there are quite a few options for dumpling places. There is Shanghai street towards Windsor and you have his place Shanghai Dragon. The soups and noodles at Shanghai street are great value at lunch time $11.80 for a bowl full of warming goodness. High quality ingredients and nice and prompt service.
