I've been going to this Cafe/Restaurant for many years, and its still my fav. Food is always delicious and well prices, and staff are always friendly!
Basil house is a nice Vietnamese restaurant on High St, Preston. Their pho broth is quite tasty, but unfortunately it was lacking a lot of the sliced beef in the broth. The bits that were in there, were very tasty, but it needed a lot more, as if only had a small amount of meat in the dish.
Their rice paper rolls were a good size and full of flavour and I would return to try other items on the menu.
Overall, the food was pretty good.
Was driving to a cousins house when I noticed this little place.
Super fast food, great service, super friendly owners who remember your face. I love it here, lots of seating - never a long wait.
Great portion sizes and such great value for money.

These guys were so so so friendly! We came around 3pm to have brunch and it tasted amazing, fresh and full of flavours. I really loved the entree which was the crab claws and prawns! We ordered 92 Thai dish and the special broken rice. Definitely going to be a regular. I’m still amazed how we never found this gem!!!! 4 plates for $43.00 with a drink, yes!
A great restaurant. Fast service, good portion sizes and inexpensive. My favourite dish is the special broken rice. This place is a great mix between Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. I will definitely come here again!
I had some take away lunch here. I tried the spicy rice noodles w chicken.
The food was fantastic, fresh, hot and tasty! The brief service was good.
This restaurant was good. If you in the area this place is definitely worth a visit!
3.5 handsdown
You know how thered always a reliable viet restaurant you can rely on...? This is it! Good size menu of 100 items haha.. i ordered the crispy chicken on tomato rice. The chicken was cooked perfectly. Nicely marinated. Chicken was tender in the inside. Rice was a but plain and i could have done with a few more fresh cucumber and tomato but overall very good meal. Topped it off i also got the 3 colour drink. And it was delicious. Most place gives you less filling and juat top it up with ice. Here it was perfectly even. Service was efficient. Price was reasonable.
This place has a massive menu full of all the Vietnamese and Thai faves. The staff were super friendly and attentive and it had a very relaxing vibe. We had two soups - a Laksa and a Vegetarian Pho - and two entrees of fried tofu pieces and roti with peanut sauce. So great to be able to choose from so many dishes that are so reasonably priced! The roti was perfectly charred and deliciously oily, and came with ample peanut sauce. The soups were delicious and filling too. We are both vegetarians and the staff assured us that all the mains can be made vegetarian, which meant there was heaps to choose from. A tasty and well-priced meal. Thanks Basil House!
It’s a solid 3.5. This is a largish Vietnamese Thai restaurant on busy High St. I was served quickly and the food also came out rapidly. I loved the prawn and beef rice paper rolls. As good as I’ve has for a while and with a nice little kick from the Vietnamese mint. Good peanut...
Really good food and great service. First time I have tried Tom Yum soup and I'm hooked. I Can definitley recommend this restaurant as one of the best for Asian cuisine in the North.
Love going to Basil House! It is very easy to go there with small kids as there is plenty of room to park a pram and the staff are very friendly and accommodating.
We have always been very happy with the food, although sometimes it is a little spicy for the kids (that's fine, more for me!)
Because the place is so big, I have never gone here and not get a table. My favorite is the chicken with egg noodle soup, and chef's special fried rice. I also sometimes order nasi goreng(but sometimes find this too spicy), and crispy chicken with tomato rice. I always see the same staff since the first time I went here(they're probably the owners), so there's a comforting sense of familiarity. Serving size is adequate, and taste is superb. I was once served with a hard rice(maybe the part that's too close to the pot), but they immediately replaced it when I told them, so all good. :) They also serve very quickly which is good when you come here starving.
One of THE BEST Viet / Thai places in Melbourne. I've been coming to Basil House for over 8 years and the food is still delicious & affordable. Food Service is quick, venue is friendly but food is spectacular. HUGE menu options make this restaurant attractive. The Basil House fried rice special is a tasty killer dish, just mouthwatering. 10/10. Flawless delicious authentic food. It's a one stop shop. I visit this place almost weekly.
I live nearby and notice that it's always busy so I had to try. Had the stir fry mixed vegetables and rice. It was really tasty and got 2 serves out of the 1 container. The owner is friendly and offered us to sit and have tea while we waited for our take away. Will be a regular for us.
Fantastic food (particularly the laksa), great service and dirt cheap prices. We always say that we should try somewhere new but can never go past basil house!
The food is really good in value and taste. Quality ingredients for what you are paying. Skilled cook. Service is great. Good spot for a quick eat.
We eat here a couple times a week and it never disappoints. Food is delicious, service is quick and friendly, and tea is hot. Super accomodating to dietary requirements. Yet to be disappointed!
Had the spicy chicken noodles
Amazing flavours loved every bite
Every good pricing and all the food looked amazing
A wide range of thai and Vietnamese food
would go back
Food: We ordered the Pad Thai, Special Combination Broken Rice and the Sliced Beef/ Tendon noodle soup (pho). Shared between the three of us, not only were the portions certainly worth the value, but the flavours of each were absolutely delicious. My favourite was the broken rice. I love how that dish has a variety of toppings with it so it's a delight to eat!
Price: Very good value for the quality and portions you're getting.
Service & Ambience: We came here for a late lunch today, so it was nice and quiet. The man that served us was very friendly. When we asked for the bean shoots to be cooked (we always do this when eating pho), he was more than happy to do so.
Overall, I would definitely recommend. Can't wait to come back to try other items from their generous menu!
Diced beef and tomyam soup is really good combination. Watress is kind and food is delicious and clean. Price is reasonable too. I recommend to anyone who wants to try viet dish and thai dish at the same time
Such a variety on the menu! Staff are so friendly and easy going. Then there's the food...so authentic and plentiful. I went with the BYOW option and there was no problem. The staff left us have a break between starters and mains.
Really tasty, delicious and affordable. The menu has so many options it makes coming here so exciting to order something new every time. Lovely team and great host he's so welcoming and always remembers a friendly face.
The food is fresh and clean. I've never came out of an Asian cuisine meal feeling greasy or bloated. I had the rice paper rolls and the prawn dumpling soup and they were both to die for. I will definitely be coming back here. My friend goes here all the time when she can and the staff remember...
Economical and great value. Two families with 5 kids ate well and the food defied the price at $9.50 per dish. The decor is average, service fast but not inviting. We would gladly go back to enjoy the food and hustle and bustle of the place. Quality of ingredients was better than expected. No one left anything on their plates. A great budget dinner out. Good for Sunday nights or mid week quickie trips out.
Very economical Asian restaurant with most dishes around $10. Pretty good for lunch or a quick dinner. Meals come out quickly and service is attentive.
Walking along High Street in Preston, Beth and I looked around for somewhere to have a late lunch.
Beth recommended Basil House, as she had been there many times whilst living in the Preston area and loved the quality of the food.
Parking the pram beside the table we had some green tea whilst we waited for some prawn rice paper rolls. No sooner had they arrived had they disappeared, as we were both ravenously hungry.
We both ordered the vermicelli noodle special and took turns to eat our meal and wheel the pram up and down the street.
I enjoyed my meal. The crushed up spring rolls were something different. I wasn't a huge fan of the salad, however the flavoured pork more than made up for that.
This is our 7th year of loyal patrionage to Basil house. We've taken dozens of friends & family. The restaurant menu is spectacular, reliable, insanely delicious, good value and has fresh authentic Thai/Viet food. We'll keep coming back in 2016 & 2017. 10/10.
Update November 2016 - Amazing food, just AMAZING, just cant dissappoint or find another restarant that can do better.
good food and atmosphere. we ordered dumplings for starters and range of noodles for our mains, definitely satisfied. the service was quick and staff friendly.
Another great local. Excellent value delights - the fried wontons, laksa and chilli lemongrass beef vermincilli noodles are particularly good. Cheaper than cooking at home.
Very good staff! And the food is nice and cheap. I recommend their curry chicken or beef. I always go there for lunch with my friends. It is really suitable to students to have a lunch.
Love going to this restaurant with my wife very local and cheap food is very nice love the fried rice that they serve especially the steamed prawn dumplings Service is quick and food is very fresh definitely keep going back every Friday
I've been coming here since they opened but had just returned two nights ago and am very pleased with the dining experience. Amongst 4 people we ordered Tom Kha Soup, Chicken Satay Skewers, Chicken Spring Rolls which were a let down, fried and steamed prawn dumplings which were good and for mains, grilled chicken on tomato rice (highly recommended), chilli udon noodles and stir fried cashew chicken. They have always been consistently delightful in their food the low lights were the spring rolls and stir fry cashew chicken, but it was just down to preference as some of the other eaters liked it, nor did I enjoy the chilli udon but I'm not a fan of chilli oil, so it's not that the dishes tastes bad, it just wasn't for my palette, however the Tom Kha Soup, fried prawn dumplings and grilled chicken on tomato rice were great! I was completely satisfied. Basil House offers a huge selection from their menu to please everyone, the dishes are flavourful and vary from differing cuisines such as Thai, Vietnamese Malaysian etc. Their Laksa and Tom Yum are delicious too and the portion sizes for some dishes are quite big. The service is fast and efficient, my waitress was great and food always came out quickly . Their beverages are really nice too, eg. The taro milk with pearls, Thai delight and Thai Iced Tea are made well. Would recommend this place to all for a cheap and good eat and will definitely be returning.
A favourite of ours on the High St.
Good value cheap eats that are hard to go past when one can't be arsed & it's easier to hand over a twenty to receive one's daily required intake as per the food pyramid. BH offer something a little different(think S.E. Asia) from the multitude of Chinese eats they're surrounded by.
As for entrees I'm a big fan of the Salt and Pepper Chicken Ribs! The Fried Prawn Dumplings are pretty good too.
One of my fav dishes for it's tasty simplicity is the Grilled Chicken Tomato Rice. You're given a slab of marinated juicy grilled chicken alongside a serving of fried tomato rice with nuoc cham. Simple, tasty, filling, eat, full.
Also rate the flat noodles in egg gravy & brisket with egg noodles amongst my other semi-regular dishes that I'll happily order. Their salads are great, tasty, healthier affairs during the warmer times of the year(I've forgotten what those days are like).
Kev, Lee & Co are great, friendly hosts and we've been regulars since inception of BH some years back. I've got my goto dishes which happily rate a solid 3.5, but value rating an easy 4.
The Ice Coffee is a winner during the warmer months...which I hope to see...sometime soon...please.
While the food is nothing fancy, Basil House always serves up tasty noodles and rice dishes. Service is good, and the food comes super quick. And it's very cheap! They have a nice range of fresh smoothies too. Try the custard apple or avocado.
My fav Vietnamese restaurant. This place has not once let me down, gone several times and the service is quick, food is epic and also really affordable, i barely go to any other vietnamese restaurants this place is by far my favourite. i love their vermicelli noodle salads!
While this place advertises and serves both Thai and Vietnamese food, it really does much better with its Vietnamese and Chinese offerings than its rather woeful Thai dishes (with one exception). It's a family restaurant with average dishes, with some highlights that are reliable. It serves above average slightly westernised Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese dishes. The clientale here is mostly non-Asian. This is a big basic dining hall with not much atmosphere. However, it is a very family friendly space and set out so that tables can be moved to accommodate a range of family structures and sizes.
Simply delicious!. My family and I have been going here for the past few years, and it's great! The food is great and flavoursome, with a wide range in the menu. Also is suitable if you are vegetarian! They provide good service and so as the environment; not only that, the dishes are cheap! Recommend giving this one a go;) I suggest trying the 'Basil fried rice'
Best Restaurant in Melbourne.. My partner and I are constantly eating out and trying the best restaurants but I can say this is honestly our favourite and has been for a long time! The food is absolutely perfect, the meals are huge, but in saying that it does not compromise on taste. The flavours of all meals are amazing, the service is super great, and very fast. Perfect before a night out for a quick meal. The staff are amazing, especially the older ones, the younger are still learning to speak English, but are still quite friendly. The restaurant is always clean and the price is just ridiculous. I would One hundred percent pay more for what we are getting, as it is that great! But the cheap food is obviously another PLUS. 1 entree, 2 mains, 1 beer and 1 soft drink, for $37, yes please, and there is always plenty to take home the meals are that large. The only thing I could recommend is don't judge by the photos on the menu, it is 100% better than that. Cant wait to go back ASAP!
Great food and great service. This place is a mix of thai and vietnamese.
Had a chef's special fried ricec and so happy.
Service is good and prompt.
Absolutely love this place, been coming here for half a dozen years now and the food is really great, and very well priced. Big portions, small budget, clean, and no compromises on taste! The staff are great too, the younger ones come and go and probably seem a tad unfriendly but that's because they don't speak English well enough for small talk, but the older staff are awesome especially the middle aged woman and the man that are always at the cashier and remember who you are. Great for uni students and families alike! Love the curry laksa, the pho, and the vermicelli noodles with spring rolls and grilled pork. I would go as far as to say they have the best Curry laksa in melbourne!
Authentic and Delicious!. Basil House has become our new go to since we've just moved to the area. We went to Vietnam over Christmas and the Vietnamese dishes we ordered here were very authentic, fresh and delicious. I can't wait to go and try more dishes at this place - everything that I saw wandering through the restaurant looked incredible!
Great....in more than just food!. Delicious Thai and Vietnamese food. Respectful and friendly service. Clean environment. Very reasonable prices. Will definitely become a regular.
I'm a regular. Love this place. Complimentary tea when you dine in, love that.
I always have the penang beef and love it. Beef is always tender and the taste is great.
My partner has the nasi goreng. One of the best nasi we've found.
On top of that, its fairly priced.
Affordable, tasty, friendly staff, quick service and delivery of food.
Good selection of food. Food was very good. Fresh and tasty..... A soup in middle of winter very nice!
Great place!. I love to go there. The food is great and cheap. The service is fast and the portion are really big.
Have tried every place on high street, and basil house is the most consistent. Great staff, really tasty food and just perfect when you just want a cheap easy eat out
Went there last week for dinner a lot of Spice plus the service was nice
Affordable and always delicious! Service is always great and it's local!
Family Favourite. Have been eating from basil house for a few years. very good for value. Staff are varied some days we get really friendly service some days just normal but we haven't ever received bad service.
Food's pretty good. one of the best places in that area.
Food is ok and good service, personally better ones very close by.
Yum.. What a feast.... Would recommend this place for a affordable and delicious meal to anyone. Try the rice paper rolls.
LOVE! Affordable and delicious food! :)
Always reliable. Basil House is our absolute favourite takeaway spot. We eat here at least once a week and they never fail to deliver.
The menu is delightfully diverse and the food consistently delicious.
Combined with prompt, efficient service with a smile, this place is a local gem.
Highly recommended.
Huge Menu, fantastic!. Sensational menu, quick service, never disappointed.
Very cheap fresh food. Never dissapointed love this place !
Very good value for money. .... Very good value for money.
Food is very tasty.
Decor is clean and uncrowded.
Amongst the best in this very crowded eating area.
10/10 : Amazing Food. Fast fresh authentic Vietnamese/Thai, Constantly Busy, The food is Excellent and extremely tasty, been coming to Basil House Monthly for years, Never disappoints, $8.90 meals, large in size, GLBTI Friendly. I can't fault this restaurant. If you want quality dining experience & sick of over priced garbage,do yourself a favor go to Basil House.
Love the freshness. When we moved back to Melbourne we wanted to find a good Thai eatery...and this suits us to a tee....we recommend it to others who also find the food so fresh..and always cooked to our expection...its child friendly which to us is very important...and overall they make the best chicken green curry and vegetable stir fry....we keep going back for more
Unparalleled. Absolutely wonderful food with exceptional value for money. I HIGHLY recommend the Tom Yum. Best soup going around for $4
Good Food Quick Service. We are locals and really like Basil House. The owners are friendly, the service is fast and the food is cheap and tastes great. I like going there for a quick meal as I know the food comes out fast. Give it a try if you want a casual dining experience.
This place is a 8/10. Great friendly service, affordable prices and beautiful food. Highly recommended.
Go here regularly and have only had one issue with service (was a full house). Regardless has always been efficient and fresh vegetables used. One of my favorites for the area. Very helpful on behalf of recommending vegan food
3 years & still going... Surprised to hear so many bad reviews. Reckon we've been coming here for 3 yrs or so & the food's always been consistent. Alot of the reason we do keep coming back.
We agree, it is your run of the mill, can't be bothered cooking takeaway. But we've always been happy with the meals & find the owners to be quite pleasant. The only gripe we have is on the odd occasion we've received onion in our meal when we've asked for none.
It was good. Just come back home from my first time visit on a Wednesday night. When I go out for Vietnamese I typically order a three colour drink and a vermicelli bowl with some type of meat with mini spring rolls. I did exactly that tonight but selecting the vermicelli grilled pork and spring roll ($8.50) and the three colour delight drink ($3.50). I am not used to the pork being served a little under cooked so I asked if it could be cooked for longer. The girl serving us at first didn't understand our request but did manage eventually to take the meat back to the kitchen for it to be cooked longer. So I was happy with that. The three colour drink was good, not the best one I have ever had, but good enough that I will return again to Basil House.
That little bit better than your average cheap restuarant.. Packed- but still great food and fast service! Asked for my food to be mild however, but it was very spicy! That was probably just my sensitive taste buds though. Cheap but great quality.
Very fast, very tasty food, price is good value for the food and service provided. Can sometimes be a little tight with the fish sauce when ordering rice vermicelli dishes, but that was not a problem tonight.
Awesome Service. Standard Food
I absolutely adore this place been coming for a couple years with my partner, its our lucky spot.
the food is always on Point, quick service, always a table, owner always remembers us, I know it's just a great feel. Food is great but make sure you're hungry cos the portion sizes are big!
deffs worth your money
enjoys!
I love the food and service here. The staff are so friendly. Food is excellent, fresh and delicious. Great prices too! My regular go to for Vietnamese in Preston!
the food is delicious, worth it for the price and the waiter is very pleasant and kind
