Review The Olympic Hotel & Bistro - Preston

Brandon Bacic
5 stars is not high enough a rating! Definitely need more! Recently I had my engagement party here in the upstairs function rooms. From just looking at the room and chatting to the function manager Adrian, you could tell how professional, genuine, easy going and willing he is to help make your night the best. Adrian made the experience so much easier with his help and input on how things can look within the room and how the placement can open the room right up. The staff who looked after us on the night done a phenomenal job and kept everything smooth sailing. I couldn't of asked for such an easygoing night with such high quality staff to look after us all. My Fiancé and I couldn't express our gratitude more towards them all. Our guests commented on the room shocked at how damn good it looked. The Olympic Hotel completely blew everyone away. I highly recommend that you book here for functions and you will not regret it!

Second time at the Olympic for Friday night meal. So I guess that might be saying something. Pleasant staff and pretty big layout. Fairly roomy and plenty of screens if you want to checkout sports/events. Started this evening shared entrée of the Lemon Pepper Calamari that we thought was pretty good. (Sorry no photos, were to hungry that night) Very nice taste and balance. Not chewy and flavours were good. Main meals - Chicken Parma with salad and Chips. Porterhouse with Garlic Butter- salad and Chips. Porter house was cooked as requested, Salad and Chips stock Pub. Taste for Porterhouse must have been good as it was polished off. Chicken Parma was what I consider stock Pub size, and Salad and Chips same. Taste was good without been over the top. Drinks - Lemon Lime and Bitters was in a very generous size glass that went down a treat. Corona was Corona-What can be said. Overall good night out for a Pub meal in the North.

Excellent service, spacious and above average food.

Celebrated my daughters communion here in February and only have Amazing things to say about our experience. Adrian went above and beyond to make everything perfect for our event and nothing was too much trouble. The staff on the night were great and always within arms reach for anything we needed. The food was exceptional all our guests commented on the abundance and quality of food. Will not hesitate to celebrate our next events here.

Great place to watch sports. Food was good but not great. Always get well done steak even though I ordered medium rare. Clean toilets and good atmosphere.

A massive shout out to Adrian the function manager. We had the best time celebrating my partners 50th in the upstairs function room. The set up was great the food was amazing, the service from the staff friendly and professional. , I will definitely book another event . Thank you again

Three of us had seniors lunches here today. Food was very tasty and meals were very generous. Bistro was warm and comfortable on a cold Melb winter's day. The staff were caring and accommodating. Would recommend.

My partner and I had our engagement party at The Olympic Hotel recently and I 100% recommended having any event there for yourself. We had the pleasure of having Adrian the event manager helping us with our special night and I’ll tell you he was amazing with every little thing we wanted! He catered to our needs and was so kind and genuine and whenever we wanted to come by and pay or set up he was always available for us. The whole set up was so stunning, we loved the fairy lights that was already set up which made the room look so good. The food was honestly the best we’ve had from any venue party we’ve attended and had so so many compliments from our guests! The staff on the night was honestly was so friendly and helped us with anything we needed. My fiancé and I were extremely happy with how the night went and would definitely be booking again!!

Been twice. Food can be both good and bad. Salt and pepper calamari is amazing however chicken parmigiana and fish and chips both have room for improvement. Prices are expensive however portion sizes are large Bistro the first time was nice second time it would have been great if we weren't right next to a group so loud we could barely hold a conversation at our table.

We celebrated our 33 wedding anniversary, a little late due to poor health, but we had a great meal each with very attentive staff. Well done everyone

Sensational food, great service from Anne the head waitress who always looks after us. A party of about 20 all served quickly and lovely food. Thank you

Had Calamari last night it was yummy and the beers went down well too🍻Happy hour room needs better music 🎶 so we can have a bit of a bogie 😊

Very friendly staff and the meal was excellent. There is a Bistro or choose the sports bar for something casual. Easy parking too.

Had dinner there on a very busy night and service was wonderful. Staff greeted us on entry and took orders for drinks straight away. Meals were delicious and served at just the right time. Had a slight hiccup with one of the desserts for which we were compensated most generously. Will definitely return

First time my husband and I have eaten in the Bistro and we loved it. Meals were HUGE and delicious and service was spot on. Definitely recommended

We all enjoyed our meals and the service was wonderful . Thank you for a lovely Mothers Day dinner

The staff were great and the food was absolutely amazing!

Is it possible to give an establishment a negative score? This place doesn’t deserve a 1 star review. It deserves a negative star review. The food was disgusting! Tender eye fillet my foot! When someone asks for rare, well done is not good enough, when it comes back as medium rare, again it’s not good enough! What makes this place worse is the manager on duty! What an absolutely rude woman! Avoid this place at all costs!
Lovely Lynda
We had a lovely dinner here. Meal servings were very generous and the staff were super friendly. I had the garfish and my husband the pasta. We also shared the arancini. We will definitely be back.

We had not been here for 15 years or so and, wow, what a change!   An extensive menu, friendly staff, with full table service.   The menu was a coeliac's dream, as we were advised anything not already available as a GF option could pretty much be converted.   It was a very busy Easter Sunday but the meals arrived quickly and were delicious.   Thank you - we will definitely be back very soon!

This pub is a Preston institution, has been renovated and is modern and comfortable internally. Also the facade has improved keeping its original look and loosing the flame/torch over front entrance.<br/>Very welcoming and attentive staff the parma is well worth a try although, not being adventurous in an gastronomic sense.<br/>The menu is extensive and I believe a great standard of food exists and must be maintained. <br/>Preston deserves this place to kick goals because the facilities eg sports bar and function areas are exceptional. It is kid friendly with a great playground area and the drinks selection huge and I bet you will find your tonic.
Jason
The gnocchi was cooked perfectly, a brilliant meal. The veal schnitzel was great, a big, warm meal, just perfect. In fact all the meals are very good value for money. Gluten free meals are outstanding that is the reason why I come here. The salt and pepper calamari is amazing. And if you have a GF request the staff are very helpful.

The family celebrated my mother-in law's 94th birthday there today. All our meals were very generous in size and far better than expected. Deanna, our waitress, gave us excellent service, far more attentive than par. Congratulations all round.
Daniela
Have come here in the past since it has been renovated and it was really nice, but we came here for dinner last night expecting the similar experience but it felt like it had changed..the menu was different, and the food wasnt great. We had arancini for entree which didnt have much flavour and didnt taste quite right..i then had risotto which was very bland and cluggy. The service was ok but the staff looked disinterested in being there. Wont be in a hurry to come back :(
TwoLittle Ducks
The Play area is good and the service was ok, but the food quality, the cost and the menu itself were below average. <br/>I will try it once more but food wise it is nothing to look forward too
Krystal
Been to the Olympic about 3 times in the last couple of months and their parmas have not let me down! Since the renovations at the Olympic the meals are a lot nicer but would definitely recommend the Parma!Service is always friendly!

We went into this week’s review pretty much blind. During dinner conversation at last week’s trip to Insignia Reviewer Stefo suggested that we next try a pub somewhere near to his work in Preston. Not having spent too much time in the area I agreed, and The Olympic Hotel was found almost entirely by Googling the phrase “pubs in Preston”.
Jessica Kiff
The staff are friendly. That's about all the place has going for it. <br/><br/>The food was typical fried pub food with nothing extra. They don't have skim milk for coffee orders and the bruschetta seemed like stale bread had been used. <br/><br/>This place used to be great about 12 months ago but it seems like they've slipped since they started building themselves up.
Phillip Craig
Dinned with the family over Xmas so it wasn't to busy we had 7 different mains most were ok but a little salty maybe it's all the cheese sauces, the lamb strips & Olympic burger stood out as the best
Morris
Staff Great, atmosphere was noisy and was only half full, Caeser salad had 1 anchovy and an almost runny poached egg, I found a parmesan shaving towards the end of the salad, Fritto Misto seafood was over cooked and dry, one piece of fish had a tinge of ammonia about it. The salmon entrée was a non event. All dishes were presented well, and a little light on substance. Chips were dreary and tomato's bland. No Craft beers on tap. The bread nice and crispy.

Silver Roon. I just wanted to say a big Thank You to Bri and all the staff for all the help on Saturday, everyone had a Lovley time, everything ran smoothly with no problems,. Thank you to the chef who provided extra food . I would come back to this venue and would recommend it to my family and friends.

My husband just loves eye fillet steak and the menu at the Olympic offers this cut of meat in several ways. He ordered the Filetto di Manzo Alla Olympic at $34.90 which was tender eye fillet char-grilled cooked to your liking topped with four garlic prawns. It comes with veg or salad and he ordered veg which included delicious twice baked potatoes, baked half tomato and baked zucchini with mixed herbs. He is a very small eater (and quite fussy I might add) but he thoroughly enjoyed his meal, never left a thing and was totally satisfied. The sauce was a hollandaise (I think, I did not taste it) but it was worthy of mopping up with bread! One very satisfied customer.
Rusty
Inconsistent. The service is almost always very, very good. Waiting staff are very friendly and we have never had to wait for very long for our meals to arrive. The atmosphere is typical pub-with-pokies, so you get a bit of the noise from the pokies in the dining area. I always order a steak and mostly it is very good, charred on the outside and pink in the middle but there have been a few occasions where I have asked for medium but the steak was very muscly and sinewy. One time I even sent it back to the kitchen to be done a little more. I'm not a fusspot and can enjoy medium-rare but the meat in these instances was really very underdone. Also, the Olympic Hotel is not very understanding if one of your dining group happens to have a disability. Overall the Olympic Hotel is okay and gets it right most of the time, but it can be inconsistent.
Karin
We just held a wake upstairs in the silver room. We cannot speak highly enough of how smoothly and professionally it was run. A hard time for everyone was made just that little bit easier. A big shout out to Sara and the rest of the crew.

Gold medal in Olympic snobbery?. Ive had two parmas here, both times in the sportsbar. The first time was about 3 months ago and I was due for another crack on the Monday just gone. While I ate it and for the most part it did the job, I must admit it was quite bland which disappointed me as it looked tasty. It just had no real taste. Il probably try it again as I don't mind the place.<br/>While I agree that the overall venue staff are generally good....I definitely have noticed I got treated nicer once I went there more and I got recognised.<br/>The staff are fine, I can tell some of the bad reviews are from tightass food snobs going into the Olympic and expecting silver service. Mayb take the condescending tone out of your voice when you complain next time and you might get somewhere.<br/>If I hear about the abscence of free bread rolls one more time I think il chuck up my schooner of Carlton draught, which incidentally will not be flat provided you buy it in the sportsbar and not the pokies/bistro. Serious.<br/>Theres plenty of looked after drinkers at this pub and you will find the good stuff where they are, and for that Olympic I say good on you for not treating your sportsbar patrons like destitute lepers unlike a certain pub in Reservoir which shall remain nameless. Cheers and stay off the pokies kids
Shawn T
Really bland food, even for a chain pub. I had the chicken souvlaki and it had no flavour and the handful of chips with it hardly made a meal. We went on a Monday night and waited 25 min for mine and 2 kids meals. <br/>If you are looking for a basic pub meal in a family bistro, I would look elsewhere.
Hungrycafecritic
Love it! Don't understand the bad reviews?. Love the Olympic hotel since the renovations and update!<br/>The staff are always super friendly and most importantly the food is awesome for a local pub!<br/>Me and my partner went there last night for the 5th time I ordered the 1/2 chicken with salad and side of mushrooms. Great to see a pub offer a healthy choice! Wasn't greasy and oily.<br/>The Chicken Parma is delightful also!<br/>Never had any problems there.. Also very clean!
Tandy
Very disappointed! To anyone reading this and still planning to go there... Do not sit in the bistro, sit in bar! The menu is the exact same but much cheaper! Now, the food... Underwhelming, I don't even know why we went there? Roast of the day was cooked in a slow cooker, I should have known better. Parma was crap! We felt like a pub meal, should have stuck with the Peacock but thought we'd try somewhere new. The menu on the table said 'Thursday pot and Parma $18' when we went to pay it was actually $26 because we sat in the bistro, same bloody kitchen, same size serving just different bloody room! JOKE! Wouldn't have posted bad review if food was decent but it was CRAP!
Stef Louise
Not sure why people don't love this place???. I went in for dinner the other night with my husband and another couple. When we arrived we were greeted by a lovely waitress who got us a table right away. I was really happy when the staff had knowledge of not only the menu but the wine list as well. I had a lovely steak that was cooked just the way i like it, while my husband had the ribs and he's been wanting to go back for them every night since! The couple we were with ordered the seafood platter for two and I was astonished when it came out, the size of it was huge and of the few pieces I got to try there was no lack of quality. We will all defiantly be returning to the Olympic very soon.
Peter
Horrible food just had a chicken Parma half cooked and overpaid for it,service is slow, things will never change here not recommended to eat here
Joseph
What to expect - Like the place. Reading a lot of bad about the Hotel, Not sure why these people have had such a bad experience (except maybe cos they work for other places etc).<br/><br/>Function rooms are Great, awesome and helpful staff all over the hotel... Bistro serves food as expected and Steaks are Great!<br/>The locals shouted me a drink for saying hello in the sports bar ... perfect place to go if you're not a snob. :)<br/><br/>Was Also able to Watch the Blues (CFC) on any of the 6 big screens
Danielle.p
WORST EVER!. I felt it my duty to tell the world... DO NOT GO HERE!<br/>Would recommend going next door to KFC before dining here Overpriced food for what you get crappy food and small serves for a pub and im not paying $70 per head plus drinks for a 3 course meal at a pub to leave with a full stomach. Mood swing staff one was is my face and over the top annoying to then completely ignoring me fluttering around doing nothing. Oh but its been renovated, woopdedo! Its already falling apart! Plus it obviously wasn't thought out much because after feeling like we were rushed off our table after eating, there was no where to sit to finish our bottle of wine and not because it was full but because there is no where to sit and relax except in the sports bar and lets face it who want to sit amounst people with no teeth talking to themselves. And ensure you take plenty of cash with you when you go and not just because of the expense but because its a nightmare to get cash out....the ATM doesnt work oh wait a minute apparently you have to go wait at the bar for 10mins then staff do eftpos then you wait 5 minutes longer because the staff forgot to give you your cash, oh wait a minute they forgot to tell me they do not give me the cash, you have to walk through a maze of slot machines back to the ATM you were at earlier because now it works- don't worry im still confused too. WORST PLACE EVER!
Dandygurl7
No biscuit with the coffee?. Meals are overpriced. After our lunch we ordered some coffees only to see there was no cookie or after dinner mint included! Most bistros we go to always give you one!
Phildo
New look, same old story. Unfortunately, the new look Olympic is the same old place it use to be- old men and "locals" playing pokies or putting a punt or 10 on and not a very family friendly atmosphere. Grandview better option for families or social meals.<br/>The new function room however is nice. Had booked a function here and got bumped to another room after they thought they found a better booking.

Great experience. Was looking for a great night out locally and came across this gem. We were impressed with the great design, great facilities, great service, great meal - in Preston what??? Definitely a hot pub. Check it out.

Been there a couple of times since the renovations and WOW what a difference! Everything about it has improved especially the food! Service was excellent! Now one of our faves!
Fussy Eater
Average score. The Seafood Platter for 2 was great however kids meal was horrible

New Olympic. I have lived in South Preston for three years. I have avoided the Olympic Hotel over this time because I imagined it to be a bit of an old man's pub. After hearing it had been renovated I took the family for dinner there on the weekend. I have nothing but praise for the place. Staff were great, extremely kid (and grand parent) friendly, the food was excellent given the reasonable pricing, and the buzz of the venue was electric. Very happy to have finally discovered this little gem. We will be back.
Debra
Delicious Eatery. The Olympic Hotel has been renovated & looks fantastic, the staff are friendly and helpful & the food in the Bistro is amazing, well presented and delicious. I highly recommend the venue

I went for my daughters 1st birthday and was disappointed to find out upon arrival that our table of 14 people would be unable to pay seperately as they do not split bills which apparently I was told about when I made the booking (which I most certainly wasn't as I would have changed venues) the supervisor and manager were both happy to stand there and argue with me about it for ten minutes and tell me that they are a bistro and offer table service as a premium and that's why they don't allow it and if we want to pay at the counter then we could go into the public bar (with our children yeah right!!) I think if they offer a kids room they should get off their high horse and allow bill splitting as let's face it its a pub and that's why we go to places like that!!
Paul
Very nice food staff are very friendly and helpfull,a little pricey though

After reading poor reveiws about the Olympic Hotel we thought we would experience it for ourselfs by having my mums 70th dinner there as we live very local. <br/>Of course the poor reveiws I had read before hand were no doubt spot on. <br/>We were seated by a welcoming waitress nearby the kids play area for the convenience of the children. <br/>There was roughly about 10 -12 people joining is for our dinner where we were then told there was no spilt bills so we had to gather all the money to pay at one time, as requested we had added up & went to the counter to pay upfront where they had a completely different total no where near the correct total of our orders.<br/>We then received our meals which were below standard for the price we paid. <br/>The chicken nugget kids meal , my kids would not touch as they tasted like cheap supermarket brand nuggets. The roast of the day which was my mums order tasted like processed Hosptial grade food. <br/>The salt & pepper squid which tasted nothing like squid it's self was apauling & in soft soggy batter. <br/>The pasta was average but wouldnt order it again tho. <br/>The Parma I must say was rather nice but for $24 for a Parma that would be the size of my hand was not enough to say I was completely satisfied. <br/>As for bread the waitress said they don't do bread rolls anymore but we could order a few garlic breads instead & for $8.50 for 4 peices I don't think so. <br/>While at the table being close to the gaming area they had some sort of special Easter raffle going on, the person on the microphone was extremely loud we could hear him from outside the doors of olmypic, we could not speak to the person opposite us over the table we had to yell because we could not hear a word anyone was saying besides the guy hosting the special trivia night & Easter raffle whatever it was it was ridiculous that we had to yell over the top of the guy using the microphone to have a conversation when he was located in the gaming area not the bistro.<br/>Once we had finished out meals we had asked for the cake to be brought out, quickly enough they had brought the cake out , we sung happy birthday & had no knife to cut the cake, we had to ask the waitress for a knife. <br/>Overall the experience of Olympic hotel was very poor & I wouldn't suggest Evan trying there for yourself, as it would be a huge waste of a time & money!!!!
Pho
I used to love coming here but now hasn't got the restaurant atmosphere anymore.

Went to Olympic for a birthday dinner and was very discusted with prices and the meals steak was bleeding In The middle and to tuff. We ask for chillie mussles all we got was chillie flakes in oil not happy at all and one order of chips we ordered had mushroom on it to bad if that person was allergic and most of the waitress was so rude and disrepectful to everyone over all experiance we will not be going again
Dane
No more bread rolls!. I work close by the Olympic so we used to come here often before they did the reno (what changed?). The menu has gotten smaller, staff still rude, meals always late, overpriced and incorrect. Now they have taken away the free bread rolls. The beer is always flat for some reason too. The Stolberg is much better, so is the Grandview which is down the road. They have no idea what they are doing here. Skip it.
Kerry Searle
Happy foodie. I have been to the Olympic Hotel many times before pre renovation, first time back since new renos and my opinion is still the same, great service, great food, love the fact they serve you at your table still. If you want good pub style food go to the Olympic.
Sue
Very Pleased. I'm new to the area and after driving by on Albert St i looked through the bistro window and saw a busy atmosphere and wanted to try it out. My husband,4 year old and i went to dine there the next night..<br/><br/>Greeted by lovely staff straight away and walking into an inviting modern bistro we already felt relaxed and made to feel welcome.<br/><br/>The waitress asked us if we liked the new look, not knowing what she meant she went on to say they had just recently re-opened after a period of closure due to renovations and said they were still finding their feet and said if we had any feedback she would appreciate the tips.<br/><br/>We had the seafood platter for 2, half expecting frozen seafood like many pubs serve we took the gamble and it paid off - it was fresh and fantastic! My daughter got a kids meal which included an ice cream and soft drink all for about $8 she enjoyed it but was a little pre-occupied with the kids play area to give any real feedback- although she ate it all! We sat close to the kids area so we could watch her which was a bonus.<br/><br/>I also liked that we got served at our table most pub bistros make you get up and order so this was yet another bonus for us, personally when we go out we want to be made a fuss over.<br/><br/>Overall i could not fault anything, and give extra bonus points for the great staff especially our waitress, i didn't catch her name though and she had a training badge on. <br/><br/>Ive read some of the other reviews and suggest you try it for yourself as our experience went well above our expectations. I just hope its not hit and miss and next time is as great as our first. Definitely the best place we have been to locally since moving here.<br/><br/>My tip: keep up the great work and ensure the great food and service happens every time and im sure you will land on your feet!
Steph
The olympic hotel was a waste of my evening after reading poor reviews the night before we were invited by regular customer from pre renovations. though the staff were great the food and amazingly the mixer drinks were far from it. After first sitting down in the newly renovated dining room we were greated by friendly staff. Recieving our drinks including a jug of coke i had to return it right away it was a watered down cordial jug of ice (only 2 small glasses came from the jug the rest was ice) it took 3 staff members to listen to my complaint. The manger could not work out that it was water. taste testing it herself and having another staff member also try it we were then served with a jug just a bad tasting with half the amount of ice. Ordering we got oysters kilpratick each the shell size of a 50cent peice a clearly a bottled sauce on top. The entre 'salt and pepper' squid was just as bad rubbery clearly frozen and though it looked seasoned it was plain as flour... the mains were a little better served with a stirfry including per steamed soggy vegetables, packeted hoikken noodles, a meal i cook my partner at home once a month. The gnocchi zucca was plain considering i added chicken to it... the chicken was the only flavour. With the salad on the parma clearly a coles look alike no wonder i was reading soo many poor reviews before going there. Not to mention for a newly renovated building i was so suprised when i nearly fell off the toilet seat when it slipped off the bowl i could not belive it. Again towards the end of our meal we ordered more drinks again served a watered down cordial. When a restaurant does not want complaints i think they should listen the first time. sitting infront of the bar i realised we were not the only table to complain about the drink service.

Quality Pub Food. The Olympic has just been renovated and looks great. It's the perfect local with everything you need. I suggest you give it a go and check out the new look and the new food and drinks
Bremantha
A Full Stomach... of Disappointment. We thought we would check out our newly renovated local, The Olympic Hotel. Greeted by the grandeur of 'not quite real' torches, we thought we were in for a real treat... We were wrong. <br/><br/>Food was way overpriced. We ordered the Gnocchi Zucca, which was quite likely a can of pumpkin soup poured over some cheap Aldi gnocchi, garnished with some I Love Coles sage leaves. <br/><br/>Do not waste your time and money... go down the road to Stolberg. <br/><br/>The final nail in the coffin was when the waitress said "How youse going?" The plural of you is you, dammit!
Matt Gatwood
Do not recommend!. I Would not recommend but if you do enjoy below average food, over priced meals and poor atmosphere. Its the place for you! Wait staff were rude & grumpy, and then snapped when I politely asked for some tomato sauce to accompany my dry flavorless meal.
Kaz
Typical pub fare. Again, went here to catch up with a friend and was pleasantly surprised. There was a nice bistro atmosphere and the usual pub grub up for grabs. We ordered a Prawn pizza, a meatlovers pizza and Pasta Carbonara. If you are expecting gourmet food, this is not the place for you but if you are looking for typical pub grub, a place for a quiet drink and maybe a flutter on the pokies, then this is the place for you. The pizzas were a decent size and were quite tasty and the pasta was a very generous serve too.
Bonnie Clark
Mehhh. This place used to be amazing..food was good etc.. then the menu changed, and suddenly things became quite pricey and the food quality became less than average. sports bar is a nice place for a drink and some nibbles.. and the food is priced better!
Mick
If you like sloppy tasteless overpriced pub food including tough steaks then eat here
Mel Bourne
Best in Northern Suburbs. We've eaten at the Olympic Hotel many times and rate it as the best food in Melbourne's Northern Suburbs.<br/><br/>Service is excellent and the food is spot on!<br/>Highly recommended.
