Review Brown Bear Cafe - Preston

Cute little cafe to have brunch at. Service is excellent. Food is pretty okay but most satisfaction comes seeing all the bear art and donations made to save bears on the wall. šŸ»

I had the souvlaki, very tasty and tender. My friend had the florentine, with bacon. They said it was the best florentine they have ever had. V friendly staff. Supporting the Brown Bears is a worthy charity which benefits from the cafe. Coffee was premium standard. Wheelchair accessible.

Classic, no frills cafe with great coffee. My avocado toast and flat white hit the spot - perfect for a quick bite to eat in a busy area! The staff were also friendly and made us feel welcome.

A really great and standout cafe in Preston. I came here in the morning with my partner for breakfast and coffee. Im usually a person that has my coffees warm, to which my request was met with a very appreciated and knowledgeable explanation - they heat their milk to 60 degrees which is just got enough and the optimal temperature. The care and effort they put into their coffee is reflected in their food as well. The food is absolutely delicious and is paired with very warm staff and a welcoming environment. They also raise money for a great cause. Overall I love this cafe, would recommend it to anyone in the area and will consistently be back

Brown Bear is my absolute favourite cafe in Melbourne. The coffee is really fantastic and always prepared with precision and care (my favourite is definitely the drip coffee)! The food is simple, delicious (the burger is great, the brownie is deadly), and surprisingly well-priced. The environment is welcoming and any artist will appreciate the atmosphere they create, with the beautiful chalk drawings and bronzes. The owners are so, so friendly and always ensure that everything is perfect. I'm so happy it's in Preston!!!

This is one of those genuinely fantastic cafe experiences that makes you want to go back again and again. The food is simple, but tasty and affordable. The coffee is on point! But more than that, the owners and staff go out of their way to give you everything you need. They are the happiest, friendliest cafe owners!

I called in here for a coffee. The service was really friendly, and this was a busy cafe on High Street.

My strong skinny latte had a good amount of froth, it was strong with a nice flavour ana it was a nice caffeine hot to start my day.

All the tips from this cafe go to a bear rescue fund although Iā€™m not sure if where, although someone did mention China.

Overall this was a good place with excellent coffee.

Weā€™ve never eaten here, but the coffee is always great and the staff are exceptionally friendly. Always a pleasure to drop in for a caffein boost.

Not sure what to say. This is the first time Iā€™ve reviewed a cafe where I didnā€™t order a coffee!!

I came here with my wife and 7 month old son. Despite the seemingly high attention to their coffee, my wife and I both ordered ice chocolate drinks with ice cream. It was 39C that day, so yeah. Anyway, it was fantastic. I tend to stick to coffee, so Iā€™m not an connoisseur, but I love chocolate, and this drink couldnā€™t have been better. I should try their coffee next time!!!

The food wasnā€™t the sort of stuff youā€™d find on a hipster cafe joint, which is refreshing. The food is not art. Itā€™s simple rather than inventive, but delicious, and done very well.

I ordered a lamb kebab/wrap, while my wife ordered a beef burger of some sort. I think it was the fully loaded one. Not sure, because I didnā€™t taste it.

The lamb kebab was really great. My wife often orders burgers at cafes we visit, and she thought the burger was as good, or better, than at other cafes. I say this surprisingly only because the burger cost us $11. Some places charge you $15-16 for a worse burger.

Oh, and the staff were nice. Iā€™d happily recommend the place, and would go back.

Coffee had a good flavour but was only warm. This was a busy little cafe that is poplar with locals.
I love the concept of being able to donate to the brown bear & the art work on the chalk board is amazing.
Food cabinet was a bit on the empty size.

They serve good coffee and varieties of teas that includes Peppermint, green, chamomile and chai.
Cute cozy restaurant and they have good customer service:

3 is too low so it has to be a 4 in the alarming absence of a 3.5 option. This is a nice semi hipster cafe. It sits happily on High St and attracts a good steady trade from what I saw. Significantly brisker than other nearby places. The decor and fittings are fine. I like it and Iā€™ll be back.

When you want to have a nice meal to start the day, all they gave you was two pieces of cold uncut bread, three and a half pieces of spanish and a can of tuna. No toast, no proper wrapping. No good.

My favourite cafe as far as coffee is concerned. It is a cafe that it updated, and very inner city. Lifting the cafe standards of Preston.
Their menu is small but has quality items to be enjoyed. Love the fit out and the staff are wonderful, friendly and make you very welcome. Like a welcome into their home!

Give Brown Bear a try I don't believe you can visit this cafe only once.

Iā€™ve walked past this cafe a lot and I finally went and had coffee here and it was really good. I have been several times since (only for coffee and a hot chocolate). The staff always polite and helpful.

Favourite coffee place! Combo of a large latte and caramel brownie is heaven! Highly recommend this place.. friendly staff and awesome service :)

Incredibly friendly and welcoming staff with great coffee well suited to a cappuccino (5 senses, dark horse blend).

The ambiance is quaint and about what you'd expect from a trendy Melbournian CafƩ.

Bonus points to their burger which was incredibly well made with extremely fresh ingredients cooked perfectly.

I'm so glad that I stop by ....

It was a surprise find .... it looks dubious from the outside, especially with the signage of "specialty coffee" on High St, Preston (not the cool side) as many have claimed, however I'm so glad that I did and order their Soy Latte at $4.10.
On their coffee alone, easily 4/5, Mini Synesso is doing its job on top of that pleasant and friendly service from these mid-age team who runs the cafe, don't be fooled by the older Chinese man Barista who has no tattoos. ear rings and funky hair, he knows how to make coffee well.

Although I'm here for their Soy Latte not to save the Brown Bear, it is impressive to see people still care for a cause, as he donated all his tips for the project. I just hope the recipient are using 100% of those donations to do the right thing and save those Brown Bears.

We shall come back to try their Menu, thank you.

PEOPLE NEED TO HEAR ABOUT THIS PLACE! It deserves a much higher rating. Extremely aromatic and tasteful coffees (my favourite place to get mocha, cap and iced coffee). Super humble staff plus they help out the brown bears. I absolute adore this place.

So close to being a good hipster cafe, but not quite. The coffee is the real deal, I drink double espresso's and theirs was rich and fruity, served in a nice ceramic espresso cup. My partner and I ordered the only two vegetarian options on the menu; I the smashed avo, and Lauren the veggie sandwich. The veg sandwich was apparently very good and the smashed avo was pretty good. Ingredients all very fresh and the siracha side was a nice touch. The sourdough could have been toasted a little more as it ended up a little sloppy. Biggest let down for food was presentation. No thought into making it look nice, just felt like average suburban cafe stuff apart from the addition of some cut strawberries on both dishes which is weird.
The presentation in general is the biggest let-down here. The walls, lighting fixtures, bar and decorations behind counter are all on point. The communal table is ok but the cafe tables and chairs inside and out are cheap crappy cafe fare. The music was so so so bad. I probably subtracted an entire point for how bad the music was; easy listening musac horror. Seriously just put the radio on pbs or rrr and be done. Even gold or jjj. Even mmm would have been an improvement.
The staff were so lovely and friendly, probably a little over enthusiastic but that's not a bad thing. They seem like real genuine humans and I really hope they can make the small changes required to make this cafe work.

Friendliest, Happiest owners! We felt so welcomed as soon as we walked in - greeted by the biggest smiles and cute personal ordering from the owner/waitress. Had poached eggs on sourdough which came with a generous amount of avo, salad, gourmet chilli sauce & sour cream.. All for $11.50! Plus the coffee was great and they serve bonsoy. Couldn't flaw this place. Great big communal table for long morning word puzzles and private tables for socialites.

I went with the smashed avocado with pan fried sourdough, scrambled free range eggs & hot chilli sauce ($11.50). Big call, but some of the best scrambled eggs Iā€™ve ever had at a cafĆ©. Husband agreed, which is an even bigger call from him. Everything was tasty, perfectly seasoned (I usually have to use a stack of salt and/or pepper myself to get it right, but it was all pretty spot on!), and the eggs were magnificently cooked ā€“ not under and raw, but more importantly not overcooked and dry.

Lovely place. Great coffee, perfect poached eggs served with chilli sauce which was delicious and really sweet friendly owners! I'll definitely be back!
