Review Tyler Street Cafe - Preston

Fantastic Cafe' to Dine-in or just grab a bite on the move. Matt is such a nice bloke, great humour and good banter. Food is 10/10, everything made fresh right before your eyes. Pie day is the best.

Primo service, great food, the atmosphere is magic - like a Romanian time warp.

Love the meat pie with minty peas. And the funny banter was a plus. Will definitely be back.

If you like a serve of dry humour and quick wit to start your day with a laugh, then the owner of Tyler St cafe is your guy. We always enjoy dropping by, the coffee is great and the banter is entertaining ... oh and the lemon curd muffins are highly addictive! Yum!!!

Love this place! Local gem! You won't find a flashy write up in Broadsheet Melbourne about this quirky little spot but it deserves headlines. The food is sensational (always ask what specials they have) and the coffee is fantastic. If you're up for cheeky banter in the morning, the owner will serve up some witty one-liners along with his delicious fare. The "Ali Baba's Flying Carpet" dish is my favourite but even something simple like the Egg & Bacon Muffin is a winner.

The service was very average. The coffee was 5 out of 10. The food was above average. The place needs someone welcoming and happy to handle customer service. Cutlery needs some serious steaming and scrubbing. Just very intricate cutlery with lots of nooks and crannies. Better to have one piece cutlery that cleans easily. Would be awesome with French doors to open the space up in the main service area.

Awesome coffee, food and service šŸ‘

Visited during stage 4 lockdown. Was kind of expensive, 2 chicken schnitzel rolls and 2 coffees was $34 ouch!!. but the rolls were generous and tasted really good, avacado, lettuce both very fresh, quality turkish roll, and a really nice mayo with lemon i think..(actully the mayo was exceptional) when its quality you dont mind as much... but still $34.. coffee was decent too. Will go again.

probably my favourite cafe around, absolutely amazing food, amazing service and just an all round good vibe!! Also has some of the best coffee Iā€™ve ever had. (And I drink A LOT of coffee)

I've never been to a cafe that charges a whole extra $1.50 for soy. That one had me scratching my head... maybe soy milk of the gods? I'll bring my own soy milk stash next time :p

The food is great, the retro settings are quaint, but it is a tiny joint that feels the stress when it gets busy.

I used to go to the Tyler St Cafe everyday before school from year 5 - 12 and the coffee was always amazing and stayed relatively the same price throughout the years. Have never eaten here, but they used to sell great doughnuts šŸ˜Š

Haven't been in for a while, mainly due to opening hours.

Seriously, selfishly considering not posting a review alerting people to the fact Matthew and Carmel now open on Sunday's. Had the whole family in. Kids had French toast made from croissants with a dab of homemade chocolate hazelnut spread; say no more other than... well, yum. Grownups (measured purely chronologically, not by maturity) went savoury, eggs, bacon, beans and now, no lunch will be needed. Bloody delicious. Coffee consistently better than the average, English breakfast tea, in a word, good,

Outstanding service, friendly, open and no pretensions whatsoever. See you next Sunday.

Coffee is always great and the owner prides himself on knowing what your 'usual is'. Food is great, seasonal and made with pride. Its the Cheers bar if it had been a cafe. Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name.

amazing vibes, owner is a hoot, food is great, coffee is too. can't ask for much more than that! will be back and would recommend anytime - especially for the 'cakes' (not muffins!)

...my friend convinced me to try a tiny cafe hidden on Tyler St. I canā€™t believe I havenā€™t noticed it before, as itā€™s just off Plenty Rd and I go past that corner all the time. The shop seemed to be run by one man, who I presume is the owner. He was happy to take our drink orders as we walked in, despite

As soon as I walked in, I noticed the retro style. The tables, the little retro kitchenware on display, and the old jazzy music playing in the dining room. The menu is small but interesting, especially the Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchieā€¦

...there has been a refit to replace the bland tuck-shop atmosphere with a delightful retro aesthetic; and (d) there has been a marked improvement in the coffee.

Great food, good vibe.. I, too, like Marie below, am grateful for urbanspoon reviews. This is a little gem to discover. Went with two friends and we all enjoyed the retro vibe, the owner's sense of humour, and the great food.

Super cute. Love this little cafe. Unlike other reviewers, I like the vibe of it. This is what Melbourne cafe culture was built on. Like stepping into someones kitchen. Amazing food produced in a tiny little space. Love it. Might go tomorrow!

Pork Belly and Retro Vibes. One of the last remaining places i had yet to try in the area got me wondering why i hadn't checked it out sooner. Nothing special on appearances, bit of a run down retro vibe with old school tables and chairs. Despite the lack of a great looking layout this place makes up for it with friendly and down to earth service with honest food that isn't trying too hard. They have a small menu but already from one experience here i can tell they do what they do well. I had the Pork Belly and really enjoyed it, used a good combination of flavours that just worked well together, given that a lot of people can screw up Pork Belly thumbs up to these guys for doing it justice. They have opted to use an italian blend of coffee which was good without being amazing. Overall if you live near this place id make it one of your go to places for a great cheap feed and good service.

Coffee: 2.7/5
Food:4/5
Service: 4/5
Ambience: 3/5
Value: 4.2/5

Total: 17.9/25 (72%)

I would definitely have not visited this place if I was walking down the street. But that's what so perfect about it! The food really does speak for itself. I always ask for the specials because they are always so delicious and unique. In my opinion they have the best coffee in melbourne!
Marie
Oh. My. Lord. I am so grateful for urbanspoon! Based on appearances, I would've never eaten at this cafe, but after reading the reviews I just had to try this guy's food - and I'm so glad I did. I ordered the Nicole Richie beans with mushrooms and I have never eaten such a tasty, delicious cooked breakfast. It was a bit of a wait for the food to come out, but so worth it. I recommend everyone try it before the chef realises his skills belong in a 5 star restaurant.

Bloody bonza. I really want to say its awful because I always want a table when I go, but this is how a cafe should be run. You are welcomed at the door like long lost friends, the coffee orders are no problem and we range from decaf lattes to mocha to long black to a choc milk. Food great, bread rolls with the beans, not a favourite of mine but others love them so who I am to complain. The beans great, and the polenta, its fantastic. This is a gem

A hidden gem. Tyler Street Cafe is one of my Favorite cafes. Staff/owner is nice and makes a great coffee, and is a whiz with the well thoughts out, really good quality foods on offer. Generous portions and creative combinations. Give it a try, you can't go wrong.

The best breakfasts in the area !

Retro Cafe. I don't know we'd call it amazing or must try, but the coffee and food was excellent coffee shop cuisine.

Its like going back to our childhood with totally authentic retro tables, chairs and sideboards. I'm positive one of the cupboards belonged to my mother, straight from our kitchen in Richmond from the 60's.

That aside, the service is good, friendly, a tad slow but who's in a hurry for a coffee in the burbs.

MUST TRY TYLER STREET CAFE!. My boyfriend and I had lunch at this gorgeous little cafe on the weekend and the food was AMAZING!! He had the beef pie with smashed peas and freshly made relish, and I had the Tyler street version of a croque-monsieur. It was delicious and made even better with the addition of mushrooms, home-made quince paste and a rocket and pomegranate salad on the side. We finished off with a Bombolone which is an italian doughnut filled with vanilla bean cream and sweet lemon curd. The food was delicious, fresh and the prices were good. You MUST try this place, you won't be disappointed.

Best steak sandwich of all time! Yum!

This place is amazing! Completely unnasuming, this little one man operation produces some of the most amazing food in town. Not to mention the most entertaining owners / chefs / baristas ever known to man! Seriously, just go there!!!

Awesome Food. This place is well worth going out of your way for. Amazing food - the Paris Hilton Beans and the Eggs Calabrese are to die for. Coffee is also very good. Whenever I'm in Melbourne I always make the trek to Preston for breakfast.

1 WORD - AWESOME!!!!. Matt you truly make not only the best coffee, but every day you surprise me with an exceptional lunch which really does hit the spot!
Your service is fantastic and I would encourage everyone to try Tyler St Cafe for a lovely meal and service with a smile! :))))

Beans!. Friendlyand quirky place with incredible food and reasonable prices. The "Paris Hilton" beans are to die for! Great coffee too, would definitely recomend.

Hairy experience.. Had breaky here a few weeks ago and was rather enjoying my Paris Hilton beans until I found a long dark hair in my meal. Now I understand this happens in hospitality but I expected the owner to be apologetic not accusing. We went in to pay and he did not even say sorry, but said something like "so lets discuss the follicle.." Now I have short hair and my dining companion is blonde so when he then went on to protest that he couldn't understand how it got in my breakfast and looked at us as if we were trying to get a free meal, I knew we would not be returning to Tyler st any time soon. Didn't charge me for my mushrooms but I still had to pay for my hair infested beans that i had barely touched. Disappointing experience after reading so many positive reviews.

Food is always amazing, great coffee and they always remember your name and your coffee preference. You won't always get fast food , but you'll never leave disappointed with what goes in your mouth.

Great coffee & eggs to die for. A gem of a coffee shop that I always get a coffee from whenever Im in the area. The reason for this review is because when I dropped in for a coffee this morning I decided to grab something to eat. Eggs Calabrese with chorizo & polenta...WOW!! Impressively presented on the plate and the simple flavours of eggs, polenta, chorizo & parmesan blended well to create a delicious, tasty and satisfying brunch experience. It looked so good I had to take a picture to send to my workmate who was stuck in the office & probably munching on the last of the choc chip cookies. (I've also included the pic here). The only other thing I can say is that I cant wait to go back next week & try the "Paris Hilton Beans"...I'll let you know how I go
Checked Out...
Doesn't look like much.... From the outside this actually looked a little like an old school fish and chip shop, nothing flash - I was thinking ā€˜this place ā€“ are you sureā€™ - inside itā€™s a cosy retro decor - delicious dishes and great coffee.

Fresh and tasty. I love this place and will go out of my way to make it my stop for lunch as often as I can. The sun streams in the window as I enjoy fantastic food, great coffee , gorgeous atmospheric decor and the best, most friendly service of all.Try the yummy house made meat pies or polenta with mushrooms- yum yum
Denise
An oasis of civilisation. Out in the milds of Preston/Reservoir it's grand to find a coffee/lunch/ munchies place that is distinguished by fresh cooked food in interesting combinations -- best free side salad in town with house baked pies or any of the meals, good coffee, friendly service and quite charming decor
Petra
I was very impressed with the quality of the food. I tried the eggs calabrese with the Paris Hilton beans it was amazing! Will be sure to go there again soon!!!
Loretta
I had the serious meat pie! I highly recommend it the best ever!!!

Well I think you should have stuck around and given him a chance (it's a one man operation). The Eggs Calabrese are amazing and there is a good selection on offer.

I would love to have tasted the food and reviewed on food quality but I never got any service so I left and had a fantastic fresh delicious breakfast at the old fire station Preston.
