Very nice and relaxed - great coffee (check the photo, tasted as good as it looked), and food great also. Highly recommend

Super lovely place! A cafe that also turns into a bar at night - a perfect model seems to me. Absolutely delicious food that is made with love and the prices are good. You will be welcomed by a super friendly staff and a unique atmosphere of a bar.

The drinks, selection, and fit out is amazing. The staff let the place down. The spirit wall has some great selection but when you order something the staff haven’t heard of, it is like you offended them. Don’t waste your time trying to tell them or point out what bottle you are referring to as they only get more annoyed from you trying. I want to love this place but they make it hard.

Food was good, very tasty and good quantity. Had to wait for 40 minutes even though it was not busy at the time.

The best coffee at the Spot. The staff always greet customers with genuine warmth. Great venue if you wish to take a group for a function, etc. A genuinely warm & ambient feel in the cafe!! Highly recommend!!!!

Thoroughly enjoyed my Fish, Chips & Salad lunch & my son enjoyed his Burger & Chips. Quick service, delicious & great tasting food. Coffee was rich, strong & flavoursome. Good place to dine in, most specially, before or after the movies, which is just across The Ritz Theatre or just a place to chill-out

Can never go wrong the Hunter S. Thompson! At first sight it looked as though it could have been the bar Johnny Depp first met Hunter. Service was welcoming and consistent. the food servings were generous and delicious. Cinnamon banana pancakes are a must for those with a sweet tooth!

Fun vibe, the best music, delicious food, great place and lovely friendly staff! Get yourselves down there, you won't be disappointed I can promise you that! 😀

Great selection of cocktails, really friendly staff, great coffee and food, 10/10 would recommend and definitely will be back again

Awesome staff, food, atmosphere and choice of drinks... full of chilled locals and a relaxed atmosphere, this is a hidden gem!
Hannah Buttini
I love this place and couldn't recommend it more! They have really made the effort to stick to the theme and you can see it in all the finer details. The staff are exceptional and so are the cocktails

Great place - one of the few places in Sydney where you can belly up to the bar and chat with the friendly staff. Great drinks - check out some of the fancy cocktails or grab a Young Henrys. Ham and cheese toasties and meat pies are delish!
Ellyn Barclay
Best bar ever. Couldn't ask for better staff. Always treated well. Love every single person here. Drinks and food are bomb. <3
Rob Lewis
Great spot.... knowledgeable bar staff, and a good selection of wine, beer and spirits.
Nadine Scott
What a great bar/restaurant from the decor to the menu. All amazing. Extra props to the lone chef on busy night!
Paula Farrell
The $7 drinks before 7pm is a winner at Bat Country. The food is consistently good though the menu isn’t vast. Always good for a pre- or post-movie tipple too!
Gary Brooks
A cracking little place. Always a good choice when I'm in Sydney, visiting the brother. Good cocktails, feeds and laughs. Always. The mornings after, not so much

Not our first time visiting Bat Country and won’t be the last. Great service, friendly staff, great drinks and fantastic atmosphere.

Best coffee in Randwick. The staff and service are the best!

So rude! We had a group of people arrive non planned and we were greeted with distain for being "an inconvenience" and not organising tables. We were not loud but a group of professionals meeting up for an hour before we went for dinner. We were told by a rude barman while he shook his head that were we're disrupting the other clientele in the bar. Not the first time they have been rude never again would i spend my money there, just rude!

Had a great night last night (9 November) with my wife for our 15th wedding anniversary. Great food, great staff and excellent service. We'll be coming back for sure.

Sending the biggest thank you and appreciation to Bat Country. Ordered through Foodora the other day and they were super late to pick up, instead of leaving me waiting, the awesome staff at Bat Country txted me to let me know what was going on AND made sure not to cook my food till foodora sorted their sh*t out. Big props to you guys for going above and beyond for your customers! And the food was amazing!

went for pre-movie drinks. bar staff could not have been more disinterested and arrogant. there was no eye contact and they were very slow to complete the orders, eg, talked to each, changed the kegs, while we just sat and waited and waited.
we questioned the ingredients of what i ordered (virgin mary) as it was being made and the bartender just kept making it the way he wanted (with horseradish).
the drink was undrinkable.

Delicious breakfast, good coffee and i loved the ambience. I luckily scored a table on the street which was very comfortable. Quaint cafe with a very welcoming atmosphere.

The bircher muesli i ordered from the simple menu was delicious, a little bit sweet, but quite hearty. Coffee was good too just did not have a decent creama that i enjoy.

Ordered the vegan burger and vegan brekkie. Both were good portions (although i added extra avo and mushrooms to the breakfast) and reasonably priced. The burger was extremely messy to eat and had a loooot of sauce but still good. Tofu was very smokey which was nice. The chickpea and pumpkin smash in the brekkie was lovely and although $4 only got you 4 mushrooms, they were good mushrooms lol. Service was rather meh and staff did not seem to be in the best of moods but it didn't really affect dining there.

Burnt toast. They can see it’s burnt, only 2/3 edible. Why would they serve it? The menu is limited. The chips were ordinary. My breakfast (smashed avocado, bacon, tomato) was less than ordinary.

Great funky little cafe in ‘The Spot’ at Randwick. Louisiana inspired menu with the option of alcoholic breakfast drinks (which I need to go back and try). Service was welcoming and friendly. Great menu selection, coffee hit the spot. Cafe during the day and awesome buzzy bar at night. Would definitely go back. Highly recommend!

Cute little cafe in the heart of Randwick. Very funky setting. The menu was small but substantial, had the hot cakes which were nice and the coffee was very good.

Our fav place date night place for dinner and drinks. Always friendly service, good food and a friendly welcome. Great music and beer tab works well too!

As a cafe - coffee is nothing special and comes in really small sizes (the 'large' is the size of a regular elsewhere) but still fully and even comparatively overpriced. Not much on offer in the way of 'grab a quick bite on go' food items (muffins, etc). Not a fan, won't be going back for coffee any time soon.

As a bar - been in there two or three times for pre-dinner drinks. All of the tools and ingredients are there but the actual cocktail list is fairly pedestrian. Prices start at $16, which to be honest is CBD pricing for a suburbs location.

Stopped in at 8ish for a late meal after a walk at Bronte. Saw the sandwich board out the front advertising the $15 Monday night roast special. We were seated by the waitress and given menus that advertised again the roast on a separate flyer. The waitress took drinks orders. Later when we then ordered two roasts we were told they had run out. A bit rich since they were still happily advertising it inside and out and also not letting us know before taking our drinks order. So we swtiched to a rump steak and a seafood meal. The waitress took the orders to the kitchen and then returned to tell us that the seafood was not available. We decided to cancel our meals and go up the street for a reliable pub meal. Having a short menu is fine but not when half the meals are not available almost an hour before the kitchen closes on a quiet evening. The least they could do was advise us before seating us and taking drinks orders.

Bat Country is normally a bar at night with a wide range of drinks and cocktails and also serve tapas. It always packed on the weekends and hard to get a table. Very cool atmosphere with vintage decor and hipster music playing. I went for breakfast as it was one of the only places open at the spot at 7am. I stood at the bar a while and asked if it was order or table service and the young man replied 'table service'. I sat down and watched him walk past a few times delivering food, packing cups in storage and he seemed to forget I was there. It wasn't long that I was waiting, but no real acknowledgment as to if I wanted to order. I got up and went to the counter and he seemed surprised, I asked again if it was table service. He replied 'I was just...' Anyway when people are in a rush for work, be more on your game. He was a polite boy, but I go to a lot of cafes so this service is under par. I think he felt bad and then was super nice and attentive after that. I got the pastramarama which was sourdough toast topped with horseradish aioli and rocket with pastrami, caperberries and a soft poached egg. This was really nice. The price was pretty cheap too. I also got a chai, which was ok.

I really like this place. Gorgeous decor and so cosy. The menu is quite limited but what they do offer is very tasty. Great selection of reds as well which is always a good thing

Hip - trendy - cool Bar great theme well furnished and the menu is pretty comprehensive. Love the share vibe the menu gives and the happy hour is great too! Issues are space and volume of patrons, when it's busy the wheels fall of the wagon a little bit and the staff get a little forgetful. I love to go but always avoid when it's crowded. Miss the best drink in the world! hoping it will come back was amazing! Also props for representing wines from Orange NSW - they are yummy and love being able to get them in the city in a cool space like yours.

Bat Country is the perfect spot for those who enjoy great drinks, cocktails and food in an unusual and relaxed atmosphere. Served by really friendly staff, the place is packed almost every night of the week. Sitting across the street from the Ritz Cinema, this is the place to be for pre-screening drinks and post-screening dinner.
Jim
Good vibe, set up and 60s beats for breakfast. The staff were helpful and polite. Bacon and egg roll was a bit burnt on top and would of expected bigger when I asked for the double.
Tess' Tasty Treat Treks
When I walked past Bat Country I was intrigued by the dark, cosy interior and the crowd of people inside so I went in with a few friends. Service was friendly, but a little disorganised (they forgot additions we asked for) and we didn't get a water refill even after we asked. The interior is very trendy, but the air conditioner was not turned on even though it was a very hot evening and the music was a little too loud. The dishes were good - we really enjoyed the salt and pepper squid - but the portions were very small for their price. We got the "Bat Cups" for $18 and ended up with three small lettuce leaves of mild tasting meat/fish combos. Bottom line is that we spent $25+ each and left with hungry bellies.

Taste/presentation - 1/2
Portion/cost - 0/1
Service - 0.5/1
Interior/vibes - 0.5/1
TOTAL- 2/5

I was really hoping I would love this place!

Unfortunately though, the space was hot and loud, water was not topped up even after our third request, the food was overpriced... and I walked out with a half-empty stomach... the biggest crime of all!

Fortunately, the squid was delicious, the beef burger with blue cheese was innovative and tasty, and the waitstaff were friendly.

With a decrease in prices or increase in quantity, regular water fill-ups, and an air conditioner, Bat Country could manage a 4.5.

could not image a worse UN-INVITING bar. left without ordering. couple of razor cut blondes behind the bar with attitude collected at the Greygums in Penrith! looked like the sort of place where the staff would headbutt you (the cowards punch) just for considering a drink & not buyng beer - since their RSA skills only progressed to draft beers.
AVOID. Bat are black, & shit all over. Pigeons of the night!
Those Who Love To Eat
Came here on a Tuesday evening with a friend for a drink or two. It was quite busy for a Tuesday evening. The spot was buzzing with an eastern suburbs crowd wanting to get out for a drink and just a good time. The bay country was rather crowded, and it seemed as though the wait staff couldn't keep up! They were fairly prompt in asking if we wanted to order any drinks but then...
Hello! How long does it take to pour a glass of rosé? What were they doing? Making the rosé? I guess they were busy but still. They managed to pour the beer my friend ordered fairly quickly.
The food also took ages. I'm not sure why it took so long to plate some cheese and fruit onto a plate but it took 20mins or more. Atleast they came around to the table to keep us updated that the cheese plate was on its way and won't be too long.
Thanks for that guys! But the platter still didn't arrive for quite some time.
I did love the deco and the ambience of the place and I would come back for a local quiet drink. It's was quite pleasant despite the slow service.

A perfect venue for a quiet Friday night drink and chat with friends. Situated in the bustling restaurant precinct of Randwick, the vibe of the bar screams trendy yet cosy and welcoming. An awesome fit out, amazing and friendly service and great cocktails makes Bat country a hidden gem of Randwick.

Perfect addition to The Spot - delicious all day cafe with bfast, lunch and brunch options, fresh loaves of Sonoma bread & treats (there's no bakery at The Spot!). At night, it turns into a great, low key bar with filling tapas, local beer on tap & good wine. Fit out is funky, cosy without being cramped. Service with a smile. Front of shop gets sunshine almost all day!! #like

Great little place, great selection of wines and great sharing plates, perfect for having with wine. Staff are always pleasant and attentive.

Worst service. The woman who seemed to be the manager with long brown hair couldn't have given any more attitude from the second we stepped foot in the place she was rude to us for no good reason. She literally slammed a drink we had waited over 30 minutes for on table without a word and kept walking. Don't bother going here the people have bad attitudes and ruin the food.

Great little bar!. LOVE this place. Randwick is so lucky to have a cool small bar like this - must go!!

I always choose the busiest venue in a foreign street for a reason. The food was simple but delicious. Beverages were great. I wish it was my local.

What a cool little place! So glad that something like this has opened in Randwick. Went there on a date the other night and really enjoyed it. Had a few share plates for dinner. I have to say, the salt & pepper squid was the best I've ever had. They had a really good selection of craft beers. I sampled a few of them and will definitely be going back to try the rest.

Great local. We had a great time at Bat Country last Friday night. The waitress was friendly, food was delicious and loved the atmosphere of the place with the decor and old tunes blaring. We will be back for more of the delicious squid!

Slow Service , average food. We had a late Sunday brunch here, around 12pm, it wasn't busy, there were maybe 4 other tables. The staff seemed too pre-occupied talking about their weekend to attend to customers, the waitress seemed disorientated, dare I say hungover. She tried to take our order 30 seconds after we sat down without giving us menus, after waiting 35 minutes for eggs we had to go to the counter to ask what was happening with our food, no one seemed to notice we had been waiting so long. The barista then informed us that our docket had been misplaced! In fairness he did offer us a coffee on the house but this still didn't compensate for the terrible service. When the food finally arrived it was average to say the least, the ham was straight from a packet and the rye bread tasted like cardboard. We really wanted to like this place and if they focused more on food and service quality instead of hiring hipsters who look good with the interior decor maybe we would have.

Ugh service. A place i've been meaning to try out for ages as it looks like a fun, quirky little bar. Finally went there last saturday night, I know it was busy, but service was terrible. People come to places for the vibe and atmosphere, the unaccommodating and unfriendly staff ruined this, which was three out of five on the floor that night. You work in hospitality, a smile wouldn't hurt. A place I wanted to love, but maybe I'll have to wait till they get new staff..

Has it's perks. Went for breakfast the other day at bat country.. I had the poached pear pancakes with maple and candied pecans.. It was delicious! Perfect amount (although looks small) (9/10)
The chai latte wasn't that great and the coffee was a little on the weak side..(4/10 for both)
The other meal ordered was the vegetarian option of the lunch roll (forget what it was called) it was pretty disappointing.. It came on a large white bread roll with salad ingredients that anyone could have put inside..(3/10) came with wedges (States that it comes with chips) which were yum!

Bit of a hit and miss cafe..with a VERY small breakfast menu!

This is the worst thing ever are you kidding me? It's 2014 please don't try and pass that off as edible

Great music! Great drinks! Great service! Could not have had more fun and can't wait to come back!

Absolutely brilliant!. I had been hearing a lot about this place and was wanting to check it out, and I couldn't be happier with the place! I went in on a Saturday night and it was jam packed! We still got super quick service though which was nice and the girls and I hung out at the bar for most of the night chatting with the bartenders (they're pretty cute too!). We were drinking their cocktails all night and by far my favourite was the 'great while whale', simply awesome!!
Ohh and that salt and pepper squid everyone keeps mentioning? Totally lives up to the hype!

Wanted to try out the new-ish local. Great service, very attentive. The wine list is small but ok. The menu is also small and more snack than meal. Everything was very tasty - Pork and Pickle and Truffle Salami were good to start. Highlight was the Salt and Pepper Squid. The Truffle Fries were good but we didn't detect very much truffle flavour. All in all, nice but not mind blowing. I think good for a quick drink and a light meal. I wanted to like it more than I actually did. Definitely a place that is good for The Spot. As a local, I would go back... Good atmosphere!

Great Coffee!!!. Bat Country is exactly what Randwick has been crying out for. It’s a funky little café/bar that would not be out of place in the more established foodie areas such as Surry Hills or Darlinghurst. At last, the residents of Randwick no longer need to make the trip to find that elusive perfect espresso. This is a barista who knows how to make a good cup of coffee. My Saturday mornings have just become a lot more relaxed knowing that I can venture here within walking distance and be more than satisfied. I cannot wait to try one of the cocktails here. If they are half as good as the coffee, then I won’t be travelling anywhere else for quite a while.

Bad coffee slow service. Just like the title says

What you have been waiting for!!. Myself and my partner were very excited to dine here as were aware of the chefs cooking style and talent. I have to say I had high expectations before I arrived and can gladly say it's the best quality food I have eatn in a very long time. You can order anything off the menu and be guaranteed satisfaction as the chef Keith is effortlessly consistent and friendly( talks to customers on the floor)
The service could be a lot warmer and professional, but the ambiance with interior and food overrides that . The three times we have been there it has been very busy which is impressive for a new restaurant. The cocktails are yummy. You gotta try Young Henry's ale brewed by Dan . I will be back often !

About Time!. I loved it. I lived in Randwick for a long time and eventually moved because of a distinct lack of venues like Bat Country. Great unpretentious atmosphere, interesting fit out and super friendly service. Food was fabulous too. Great place for a chilled out champagne afternoon....

Glad I stopped in Bat Country!. "We can't stop here - this is Bat Country" - well I'll definitely be stopping by here again! Came here for coffee and breakfast with a friend and was more than impressed with this little establishment.

Let's start with the service ... they're obviously listening to the constructive criticism given on this site, because our glasses of water were topped up numerous times. Thumbs up! Friendly staff, food came quick, and no $1 eftpos charge (as someone stated earlier).

The coffee - loved it. Not too weak, not too strong, just right!

The vibe - the eclectic, Hunter S Thompson-theme of the place is just plain ol' cool.

The food - well this was the real winner of the joint. I had the green eggs and ham - scrambled egg, basil and cream on sourdough with ham. Absolutely delicious. I had a squiz at the lunch and dinner menu and I can't wait to come back again to try what else is on offer (I've heard the s+p squid is a must!).

Considering these guys have only been open a couple of weeks, I can only imagine how incredible this place is going to be in the near-future.

You got my vote Bat Country!
Mina79
Great bac&egg roll - order ur coffee strong though, if ur a fiend like me.
We just had bfast at Bat Country, as per other reviews, service is a lil off (I'm putting it down to teething issues, no real problems per se). The berkley rolls were fab, fresh eggs and tasty bacon. I ha a strong regular coffee and it was great, but my other half had a large and found it a little weak. I am an ex-waitress and judge a cafe by the water service, which we weren't offered and when I asked for some when our food came it never appeared. This is a little thing but something that sets you apart.
Jas
Breaky in bat country!!! Pretty damn good. I have a hangover that would lay down a rhino and bat country coffee fixed it completely! Awesome green eggs and ham

Had brekky hear this morning. Dee-licious!!

The service was a little hit and miss but the amazing pancakes made it bearable!

$1 eftpos charge?. A trendy bar with a good vibe. The cocktails are based on Mexican and Central American Spirits. We bought a beer and a cocktail for $24. The cocktail was delicious but when I went to pay by eftpos I was charged a $1 eftpos fee which is unusual.

Salt & Pepper Squid. Sure, everyone says they can make good Salt and Pepper Squid, but Chef Tim has out done the rest, simply the best I've tasted. The resturant was only open a week when I visited, and if the rest of the menu is like the squid then these guy's are on a winner.
