Review Vim's Kitchen - Randwick

Peter Monaghan
Been here twice in 2 weeks and absolutely love this restaurant! The food is spicy but delicious. The staff are delightful and will do anything to accommodate. They have a great variety in their menu and we are working our way through it with full belly’s and smiles on our faces. We will continue to come back and recommend it to friends and family.

Vim's Kitchen is a very good restaurant. It is located on a corner which lends itself to a substantial amount of outdoor seating. We were served by friendly staff and were warned when placing our order that one of the dishes we asked for would be very spicy. We ended up selecting Kambing Kari (fresh Aussie goat cooked with spicy Malaysian /South Indian spices topped with caramelised onion) instead. Although it too was a bit spicy (as expected) we were able to handle it ok. Credit cards are accepted in the restaurant, however there is a surcharge. I recommend Vim's Kitchen as the food is very good, however it can be very spicy too.

We ordered satay, Briyani lamb, roti canai, pandan panacotta, stick black rice. Satay was terrible, the chicken was gelatinous the sauce had lots of pepper. Briyani was some weird tasting fried rice with carrots. There was hardly any lamb for the price. The desserts were sub par.

I have tried and I have tried to love Malaysian food. Tried it at numerous restaurants in several countries and thought I would give it another go at this location. The food at Vim's is nothing spectacular but my son ordered the mussels and was impressed with the size of his serving (he said the serving of mussels was quite large for the price). But I have to say, the woman / cook who served us was awful and said racialized comments to our multicultural family and our "lack of taste" (um, we have extensive experience with spicy food and love Jamaican /Nigerian / Northern Chinese / Portuguese cooking which can be very fiery. And we cultivate chillies at home. But thank you for showing us your true colours). We haven't gone back since due to unappealing food and rude service. Good news is that if you live in Sydney, Kensington is barely a 5 minute drive away and you can OD on pretty much anything from Asia, Malaysian included, til your hearts content not to mention the city is a 15 minute drive away as well. And the service and food will be way better than at Vim's. Not recommended.

Best Malaysian Restaurant in Sydney by far. The flavour are amazing, price is affordable and staff are super friendly. Mee Goreng and the Rendang is my fav but the roti bread is outta this world, on par with the roti in Malaysia. Keep it up Vim.

Ok. The food can be rather spicy at times and not so kind to your derriere

Beautiful and authentic Malaysian food at this place. We have been eating at this place for a few years now and I should say it's one of my favourite Malaysian restaurants in Sydney

Ordered $20 worth of food through menulog, went to pick it up but was told it had been cancelled because it was under $25. Then they just walked away. Why would Menulog accept orders under $25 if the restaurant won't allow it? I then asked to speak to them again and they just came back and said it was their policy to not accept orders under $25. Why? The restaurant was empty, wouldn't you prefer any business to none? It's not like I was asking for delivery. It wasn't even the fact I wasted my time going there it was their rude, uncaring attitude which ended up in them screaming at me to hear "the point of view" after stating several times only it was "their policy". Why not say order a little more and we'll make it or since you're here we'd be happy to make something for you. Their loss, went down the road to the new Chargrill Charlie's where I ordered $40 worth of food and no hairs or flies in it either! I'm a local and you have now lost me for life!

Positives: Nice atmosphere and not too busy. We had our choice of tables and were served quickly.
Negatives: food wasn’t very nice and our group all got food poisoning after

This was a real disappointment. The squid was extremely spicy, and it did not state this on the menu. The chicken curry had a few pieces of chicken and was mainly sauce. A terrible meal that cost way too much for what it was.

Some friends and I dined at VIM'S Restaurant recently. We were very disappointed as the food was very ordinary and not up to it's usual high standard. The entrees of satay chicken, spring rolls were very small. Main course, the Butter chicken serving was also quite small and the sauce very thin and runny. The Lamb Korma, was not much better. I have eaten much better dishes at Mand's Indian Restaurant in Avoca St Randwick. My friends and I will not be going back to Vim's for another meal. It used to be an excellent restaurant and good value for money, but no tany more.

We tried to go to Bake Bar but we got no service for a solid 15 minutes, so we thought we would take our custom next door. Next door is an exotic looking Malaysian restaurant called Vim's. What a wonderful decision that was, as we thoroughly enjoyed our hearty meal of a vegetable stir fry, long grain rice, roti canai with chicken curry, and mango lassi. The food was deliciously tasty, and the flavours were fantastic. The service was caring yet unobtrusive, and made us feel right at home. It felt like we were eating at an old aunty's house.

Small servings.... Started with vegetable spring rolls which tasted like plain pastry and not much filling. Had chicken noodle dish and struggled to find chicken pieces amongst the ingredients. Curry came out in a tiny rice bowl....very small serve for the price. Bought take away curry for my fiance and the container was only a 3rd filled. Not impressive.

Not bad for a local best dish was the roti and the goat. Service was good and price fair

Delightful. I have eaten twice at this little restaurant, I am a bit of a foodie, it is just lovely.tresh and tasty food and a good atmosphere. I hope it stays but does not get too popular and diffficult to get a table.

NO GO. Tried this restaurant for the first time tonight. We live locally and regularly pass in the evenings and it always seems quite busy so obviously saw this as a good sign. Sad to say it was not a good experience. We had the chicken satay sticks, butter chicken curry and prawn sambal. The prawn dish being the worst, the sauce was like water, the prawns may have well been just boiled in water they were that tasteless. The butter chicken sauce was not up to much either so a lot of it went to waste. Nevermind its all trial and error and we will not be returning.

Saddened. I was one of Vim's first customers in his opening week back 2 years ago. I have had my last 2 birthday's there. However, I have been steadily disappointed with the curry's for the past 12 months. The chicken curry is basically flavoured water, very thin, no gravy consistency at all. My main gripe is their pricing now. I was there last night and again last week and I could not believe the price hike. They have never been the cheapest eating place on the block, however, when I look at the prices from last year when a curry was $12 to last nights price of $16, I am pretty disgusted. Has the food improved enormously out of this world? No... in fact, it has literally moved a downward path. They are charging 'Mamuk' prices! Mamuk is the best Malaysian restaurant in Sydney, but Vims most definitely is not. I had been a loyal customer, but I will not be going back. Yes I love the new decor and the staff are lovely, but, I'm there to eat Malaysian food, not look at the pretty wallpaper. Unfortunately, my own cooking is still better than eating at their eatery, so from now on it's back to the kitchen for me (I am Singaporean so I luckily can cood Malaysian style food).

Curry too watery and hot. Unfortunately the curries are all watery and waaaaaay too hot.

Don't get me wrong I like chilli and a bit of spice but these guys ruin their curries by going totally overboard.

All you taste is chilli.

I have tried most of the curries there hoping that I just got a bad one the first time but they are always the same.

They're super hot, super watery and super lacking in flavour.

The roti bread is ok although quite heavy and soggy.Sent from my Galaxy Note II.

Not impressed!. Sorry, but can't say hardly anything positive about the food. Beef Rendang, lacking true rendang flavour; rotis, too heavy & stodgy; gado gado ~ just dreadful. The only reasonable part of the meal were the chicken satays.Service efficient, but grim ~ not welcoming. We shall NOT be returning.

The food was exceptional. We loved the roti so much we went back for seconds which now means we have to roll home. Unfortunately the service wasn't a patch on the food but if you go in knowing this then you'll have a good time enjoying the show!

Incredibly rude customer service!. The worst customer service from a restaurant we have ever seen and experienced! Simply overcharged an item that we didn't know we have to pay for it. The item was chilli which comes with the meal we ordered and when asked possibly to have some more, they came back with it and without notifying us, they decided to add the expense in our total bill.

We were surprised and questioned that shouldn't that chilli be a part of the main dish and it should be free. They must have misunderstood our request, we simply requesting for more chilli of what we already have on our plate not to order a side dish. If they weren't unclear with our request, their job is to clarify the order with their customer at the first place and not making their own decision and then asking us to pay for it. As a customer we have the right to decide on what we want to purchase.

So instead of trying to listen to customer's disappointment and work out the issue politely, the guy we were talking to was continue being rude to us and then a lady came out and start yelling at us: "I have to make this with my hand, nothing comes for free in this world!" We were literally abused by two people of a small issue and they were obviously not even trying to bother solving this issue calmly.

We were furious and just gave them our money and all we want is just to leave that place immediately. And guess what! Instead of just giving our change and let us go, they continue assaulting us and said: " Do not come back here again, we don't want to see your face!"
What an awful attitude! We asked him to give our change and we left immediately.

This attitude is beyond rude, this is classified as a harassment.

Think twice before going to this place. We certainly will not come back again and will not recommend this to anyone.

Best Malaysian Food in Sydney!. Vim's Kitchen has recently been renovated and the owners Vim & Rao have created a lovely ambience with outdoor seating for the warmer months. The food is exceptional as always with a couple of new additions to the menu - a delicious beef curry and fragrant fish curry.

Old favs include beef rendang, sambal prawns and Laksa and of course the roti bread!!

If you like spicy food you must try Vim's Kitchen. Forget Mamek and The Malaya, Vim's will knock your socks off!

There are plenty of options available if you don't like too much spice as well.

Nice wine list and it is also BYO.

Great local place, really tasty food and great service and well priced. Will definitely be going back there again, the roti was amazing.

Excellent home-cooked Malaysian. We went to Vim's Kitchen tonight on a whim and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food. We had the satay and pulut udang as starters, and then the beef rendang, ayam panggang (chicken), and gulai ikan (fish in spiced coconut sauce), as well as the char kway teow and roti chanai. The gulai ikan was impeccable, with the fish ridiculously fresh and the accompanying coconut sauce extremely fragrant. The roti chanai is also probably the best ones Sydney has to offer - it was flaky, light, and had a perfect consistency. We enjoyed it so much we sat around the table for ages till the kitchen closed and we couldn't get dessert! Will definitely plan more carefully for that next time.

As a Singaporean, Vim's food was more than reminiscent of home and possibly put together with more care and quality spices than would even be regularly found back home. Highly recommended!

Great Malaysian option. Ive eaten here a few times. Its a little bit variable but when its good its extremely good. Yes their Roti is lovely and I have enjoyed the Beef Redang - always a favourite with me. I still keep going back so I must say that I am very happy with this place.

Food was ok but not mind blowing. The roti was nice and fluffy but my chicken curry lacked any sort of flavor or complexity. The service was friendly but prices were a bit exorbitant $20 for 2 rotis and a little bowl of curry.

Aromatic!!. We had our first meal at Vim's and will definitely be going back! Wonderful authentic Malaysian food with every dish having individual and aromatic flavours, our curries and rotis were fabulous. Would highly recommend the lamb curry with it's fragrant spices and the fish curry was also great. The service was super warm and friendly and as a bonus she was lovely with our baby boy. HIghly recommended!
Bagus

What warming, lovely, flavoursome fresh malaysian food is on offer here at Vim's. Delicious roti's and dosai's (and more!). Been back 4 times already.
Thank you to Vim and Rau for your food and friendly service.

Absolutely delicious!. Forget Mamak. This is the goods. We had the fantastic roti canai and three curries and had to send the owner back in to make another 2 rotis because they were so good. Each curry was really flavoursome - especially the prawn with sambal spices. We will definitely be going back - regularly!

Authentic food. This place just opened a few weeks ago where the Jade Garden chinese restaurant used to be.

It's really good food... I've tried the Beef Rendang, Gado Gado and satay chicken skewers. reasonably priced and tasty. Roti's are good too. give them a try
