Review Gelato Messina Richmond - Richmond

Em Clare
This place is always packed whenever I go past. Nice range of flavours, and great ideas for specials of the week. “The Dude” - hilarious. Big hit among friends too. Would love some more dairy-free options that aren’t sorbet though!

Someone told me Messina is arguably one of the best and I should give it at least one try. Glad I listened because I will be going back soon. PS: They let you taste before deciding "the one"

Fabulous. The selection is huge and the service is great. Probably the best pistachio gelato I've tasted. Pistachio praline. The lemon has the perfect tang to balance the two. Great prices. I'll be back for sure.

Friendly and helpful, delicious gelato, good serving size.

the pinnacle of inner city elitist entitlement is servers getting paid a minimum of $30 an hour expecting tips for taking your order. Only in Melbourne can you expect to be hit for a tip for the most basic of hospitality services. Stop being so entitled.

Served by a friendly girl. The shop was beautifully clean, and loved that there was a great variety in their range of dairy free options! The serve was a lot bigger than I anticipated, and really good value!
ur babe
creamy textured ice cream and a lot of fun tasty variants. love the vibe as well.

Fantastic gelato One of my favourite ice cream destinations.

There's no question about the quality of the gelato here and the unique flavours are a real draw-card to make the trip but just be prepared to pay for the reputation and quality.
MELBFOODIEEE
messina is such a classic in melbourne - prices are a little high for the quantity some staff give but the flavour and quality is there! i highly recommend the fig and marscapone for a creamy option and for a more refreshing option, the mango and salted coconut. yum!

Delicious scoop of gelato as I wandered along Swan Street in the current COVID easing of restrictions. Chose the Choc Mint flavour in a cone and enjoyed it thoroughly. Just the right texture, mint flavour wasn’t overpowering and the chocolate chips were just the correct amount. Worth multiple return visits!
Steph
Another amazing gelato joint 🍦 Really good gelato and they offer a different variety of flavours that Pidapipo doesn’t not offer.

🗓 Visited in November 2018

OMGosh has it been soo long since my last visit? Noo lol.

Anyway on my last visit I had some rich chocolate and passionfruit sorbet. The chocolate was rich and creamy and definitely not sweet. Just perfect.

The passionfruit sorbet was a sour, whoa, lip smacking, face twisting delight. I’m pulling a face writing this now hahaha

It was definitely delicious though and I was one happy camper! This place is still amazing and if you haven’t been here in a while, it’s time to go back lol.

Enjoy.

Previous review - March 2016
Just had some Lemon Sorbet and some Blood Orange Sorbet here. Very nice but it's a bit too sweet for my taste buds. I am trying not to eat cane sugar so I didn't try any of the other amazing flavours such as poached fig, or salted caramel and white chocolate! OMGosh they look soo good!
Maybe I'll try them next time hahaha
Mamacita Foodie And Hola Con Lola
Even better than Italy or Argentina!
My fav blood orange & dulce de leche

The best place for unique gelato flavours! I got the special flavour of the day - coffee, banana, pecan nuts etc. The coffee was a bit too strong though, the bitterness overpowered the banana taste, but it was still really good.

The apple pie one is sooo good as it had bits of apple pie inside the gelato broken up. It felt like you are actually eating an apple pie crumble but in a gelato. Amazing flavour.

Treat yo’self! This is some of the best I’ve cream I’ve ever had the pleasure of indulging in. Dreamy caramel gelato 😋
Justaworkingmama
Good choice of gelato.

It’s smaller than the Messina in Fitzroy so it could be harder to get to the counter when there is a line.

But you can’t go wrong with any of the flavours they offer
Good Food Good Mood
Not sure how I haven’t reviewed this place before as I have been here on countless occasions but in any case we had a cake from here today at a birthday which was utterly divine. I’ve had this particular cake in the single serve before at a pop up event and I have to say it’s more enjoyable in the smaller size as you taste all of the elements whereas in a cake you may get a slice of only some components.

The section I got included a lot of the dark chocolate gelato which is quite decadent and a little bitter for my palette. I definitely prefer the sweeter peanut butter layers but a very impressive party trick nonetheless

Probably arrive 20 minutes before you want to eat, it's that hard to choose a flavour. I don't remember it being this hard at Baskins. Can get quite busy. Just do it.
Kris L
Not sure what to say except-- best ice cream ever! We had the salted caramel and pistachio praline combination. And, wow, who would’ve thought you could pack that much flavour into ice cream.

With the weather starting to warm up, it's looking like gelato season again; and it doesn't get much better than Gelato Messina. With so many gorgeous flavours available, you could be in here every day and still never get sick of it. This isn't a large space, with some bar seating around the windows, and a small table or two. Most people would take away their gelato as it's quite convenient. The staff are lovely, and don't mind if you sample a flavour or two.

I recently had salted caramel and white chocolate, and one of the weekly specials, Chewbaklava which was a delicious toasted almond gelato with baklava pieces. Both flavours were amazing, and the texture is just so smooth and creamy. Even though it's not inexpensive, the servings are generous and well worth the money. Gelato Messina definitely has a great reputation and is one of the best places to stop for a sweet treat.

Worth it!!

My absolute favourite ice cream is the salted caramel with white chocolate. I would get a tub of this, even during the colder months. My daughter prefers the hazelnut one. And every now and then we try out their new flavours. The staff are all friendly, helpful and very patient especially when we can’t decide what we want.
Melanie (ForeverBrunching)
Some of the best gelato in Melbourne! Messina is definitely hyped up, but it lives up to expectations for me.

It was a cold night, so everyone was inside. There isn’t a whole lot of sitting space, but my friends & I managed to sit on some couches. The shop is very dimly lit which makes it feel intimate. I loved how the story of Messina is playing on the TVs, showcasing how everything is made in house from the brownies to the chocolate.

I ordered a scoop of their special flavour True Romance in a cone. Oh my gosh what an amazing flavour! The candied peanuts were awesome, and added a lot of texture to the gelato. The brownies were nice and chocolately & there was an overall great peanut butter flavour throughout the gelato. The gelato itself was so creamy & delicious.

Service was friendly but it was super busy so they were under the pump

Three scoops ($8.80)
⭐️ 4.5/5 ⭐️
🍴Always say yes to messina! 4th or 5th time back but their ice cream never fails to make me happy, even when it’s a cold winter-y day ☺️. Had the #pistachiopraline which is nutty but a bit sweeter today than usual, classic favourite #saltedcaramel, and one of my personal favourite #pandancoconut

Walked past and I had to go in for a double scoop of my favorite flavors - gianduia and pistachio - because even when it’s freezing and you’ve already had too much to eat, there is always room for gelato. And this place has a cult following in these parts! The pistachio was the better of the two. I could taste the smoky nuttiness in my scoop.
.
.
.
#gelato #gianduia #pistachio #dessert #eatingout #travelfoodie #melbourne #melbourneeats

So good every time! I'm not a huge ice-cream person as some can be sickly sweet but the Gelato Messina flavours have the right balance. Before you know it, you've finished the whole cone.

There are an abundance of flavours to choose from (approx 20-30) and if you're really stuck, you can taste test until you're satisfied. Reasonable prices for such high quality gelato.

The vibe is dark and ambient, a cool vibe and always brimming with a hip crowd. Lines can be long but they get through it quickly. Opens until around 11pm so a great choice for an after dinner dessert.

Tip: salted caramel and the pandan & coconut are my faves 🤗🍦🍧

This is one of my go-to places for that special treat after a dinner, after a movie or 'just because!' There is a fabulous selection of flavours from the typical chocolate and vanilla right through to a whole lot of other blends. The queue can be long during busy periods so be prepared to wait - it is worth it. Staff were extremely helpful and easy going. Kids welcome and they'll love it. Kid sized cones available. Prices are reasonable but not necessarily cheap. But heck, once you've had one it's hard not to go back for more.

Wheelchair and disability friendly. Strollers and prams can fit. Parking isn't too bad but it is Swan Street so watch out for those parking inspectors.
Mustard
Got your standard pistachio (my favourite) because really, you don't need other flavours trying to get in on the action. It was just the best thing to cap off the night, nice and creamy with a lovely roasted pistachio flavour. Pricey for one scoop so you're better off getting two or three (or a tub). That however usually gives me less enjoyment as I'd be too sugar overloaded to fully appreciate the flavours.

Who doesn't love icecream.
Messina is an icon amongst the icecream scene with a wide range of yummy flavours on offer. I had the dulce delish this time which was ovs delicious. Highly recommend to try on a sunny day.
Whalesfoodadventure
Love this gelato joint! Amazing service, let us try a lot of different flavours. Ended up getting the white chocolate hazelnut, salted caramel and chocolate fudge. All tasted so creamy!

This place is fantastic. I’ve been here a couple of times and to the other location also and I will always return! The staff are great, the lactose free options are delicious and it’s always a great experience :)

My number one favourite ice cream shop. I love to check out their weekly specials, they’re usually so chunky, flavoursome and creamy. My favourite which i got aaaages ago was birthday cake and brown sugar, simple but absolutely amazing. My go to flavour is strawberry and coffee! Can’t go wrong with these two
Rohan Haggart
Coconut Almond! Passionfruit! Amazing! They're the only 2 flavours I've tried because they're so good, I can't go to Messina and not get them.
Chronicles Of Nardia
Gelato Messina is located on Swan Street in Richmond. I was in the area & had a bit of time between meetings so headed in. The guy who served me gave me a brief rundown about Messina & I was impressed with his knowledge of the business & products.

I couldn’t resist trying one of the new flavours that had just been released. Finger Bun - brioche gelato with whipped cream, raspberry purée & coconut icing. I love a fruity gelato & this was divine. A rich & creamy coconut flavour with pops of raspberry purée, absolutely delicious.

This store was really busy, a lot of customers coming in after the tennis & the staff handled the crowds with ease. Gelato Messina really are the kings of gelato & the range of flavours is amazing. Already looking forward to my next visit.

Best ice cream I’ve had. They have tons of flavors to choose from.

I ordered a tub for the family and was just blown away with their Coconut Lychee flavor. My goodness it was amazing.
YesNoMelbourne
Yes/no? Yes for certain flavours

This place was super packed and had super good reviews so I went in. Chose two flavours, one peanut butter and chocolate and the other pistachio.
The pistachio was amazing, best ice cream I’ve ever had. So smooth and rich.
Unfortunately, the peanut butter chocolate was horrible, flavourless and just disappointing
So overall, chose your flavours wisely.
J0yy173
Too many delicious flavours to choose from, Messina is one of my favourite gelato places. The sorbet flavours also cater well for vegans. Coconut and Pandan plus Salted Coconut and Mango were the chosen ones today.
The Pet Roo
All the hype but nothing special, i ordered the yogurt caramel but the caramel was so sickly sweet that it overpowers the frozen Yogurt icecream and the icecream itself was very soft, just a little too soft for my liking. Personally I'd mix Yogurt with cherries to get that nice tangy sour taste.
Nay Nay
As a huge fan of Gelato Messina I was so excited to see this exciting dessert on the menu at the night market. Layers dessert is was creative and full of flavour just hard to eat
Makan2Melbourne
The usual pistachio I got wasn’t available, so I tried the Pistachio Praline instead. Was really good! The praline added a nice crunch. It was a little bit too sweet, but a sweet tooth like me could finish it all!

The Liven app encouraged me into Gelato Messina in Richmond today where I heard there were unique flavours being launched weekly to celebrate Livens LVN bitcurrency launch. I don’t actually need that much of an incentive to call in here on a warm day either I might add.

The special flavour available this week was cleverly titled Chock-Chain-Technology (I see what you did there) and was all double chocolate flavour with added crunch. I had this in a cup along with the pistachio praline flavour which I just knew I would like.

Gelato Massina are still hands down my favourite gelato shop and their flavours blast others out of the park.
Lucky Star
Hands down the Best Gelato in Melbourne. Great variety of flavours. Very friendly staff. The coconut pandan gelato was unique and tasty. Like to try their milkshakes next time. Place is a little small though, hence you may need to wait for a seat.
Gastrology
For the sweet tooth, the Gelato Messina treats are sure to hit the spot. Messina have brought a range of nostalgic and never seen before ‘mono-portions’ to HWKR Melbourne. Their fully stocked cabinet of mono-portions include 5 custom single serve gelato items - one of which is their famous ‘Dr Evil’s Magic Mushroom Cake’ in miniature from, plus 4 brand new creations which are exclusive to HWKR.

Stumbled upon this highly rated gelato bar one night when looking for dessert. So many flavours to choose from. I tried the watermelon one and the pear and rhubarb flavoured gelato. Needless to say both were delicious. However love love loved the pear and rhubarb. Can’t wait to go back for more!

You just can’t wrong with gelato at Messina. The Messina store on Swan street was fairly quiet tonight, probably because of the cold weather. I had the baci gelato which was so satisfying as I was having a baci chocolate craving earlier on the day. My friend had the Sticken To My Date and the passion fruit gelato. Both flavors tasted great.
RayDAN143
Even on a cold Melbourne night, this place was a welcome sight on Swan Street. The Tiramisu and Pistacchio gelati were fresh and a nice dessert after dinner across the road. I liked the gelati as it was not overly sweet. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes nice gelato.

Came here with my boss and another colleague. They love this place! Apparently it’s a very populated ice cream place. I was very intrigued.

Walked in and the atmosphere was very nice. Their selection of ice cream and gelato flavours were great. So hard to choose the one (or two) flavour! I ended up going with “fairy bread” cos it was very unique and I haven’t seen it around (yet).

I really enjoyed it. It tasted just like fairy bread but in ice cream form. Would love to go back and try out more unique flavours there!

DineByNine
I went there the other night when it was Cold and got 3 Scoops so I could give a proper rating. Is it just me or is their Gelato more icey than smooth than any other Gelato shops. Maybe its all the stuff they add in it. I got the Tiramsu...and honestly I enjoyed that. The Yoghurt and Caramel, I thought was plain and boring...but then again I did order it. The Caramel thou, was not Caramel...it reminded me of gross version of the gross original maple syrup at Pancake Parlour. And Wow....the grossest Gelato I got was Pistachio Praline. So many words ....but I wont say it. All I will say, I would have scooped it amd thrown it but i ate it so I can experience it. On top of that. It didnt taste like pistachio. Not going back. Not sure why people line up for it. Could be the taste testings.

They definitely have some interesting flavours (liquorice anyone?) but definitely worth the visit. The staff are lovely and the gelato is even better. I ordered the Salted Coconut and Mango, and could have had another scoop. It was a very intense coconut flavour which almost leaned on the artificial side but the mango “salsa” cut through the richness and offered a refreshing, fruity break from it.

Overall, it’s a great place (not my favourite) and would love to try some of the other flavours.
SJFU
Love/hate relationship as I’m forever compelled to try the new specials as they arise. Lovely, helpful service at this location and amazing, extensive selection.
My favourite gelato in Melbourne.

The famous gelateria

Ambience: In the corner of the 2 streets, this place has such a chill vibe. It's dimly lit but you can still see all the gelatos. The music is a bit loud though. And since there are lots of people, it can get bit crampy. We ended up seating at a public bench outside.
On my recent visit it was not crowded so we sat inside. it's pretty warm and the music wasnt too loud this time.

Service: First visit was a friday night so there were lots of people, yet the three staffs did pretty well. They were never annoyed when asked to taste (which was a lot 😂) altho they will start serving other customer if you still can't make up ur mind (ME) which makes perfect sense cause there were so many people. Overall, quick and friendly!

Second visit, it was pretty quiet so the staffs were just standkng behind the counter, waiting for me to make up my indesicive mind for a really long time, and they didn't look annoyed so yay. We also payed quite some time after we (well me exactly) indulged our ice creams.

Food: Okay, we're talking a looooot of flavors. There were like maybe 40 flavors available to choose from! What's even better is the variety of the dairy free ones! Tried some of the coconut based and they were so YUM. After tryin out like 10 flavors😅, I finally went with Bourbon Brekkie which was really good. The gelato was not too soft or too hard, just the perfect consistency, flavor was just right, nlt too sweet. All the flavors are yum so there's always something for everyone, also pretty generous! My friend claims this chain as her fav.

On my second visit, I tried again numerous flavors, before going with the choc mint. Their choc mint is notably different from many others, it's more minty and tasted much more raw than the usual artificial mint, it's also less sweet but i find it just right, and I love the texture and taste of the chocolate shavings blended in the ice cream. It can be a bit sweeter though? But I'm good either way. It did grow on me as I eat it, which is a good thing, as it was usually the other way.

I do realize though that some flavors im not such a fan of, like tiramisu and dulce de leche I found too sweet, as well as the sorbet series, and some flavors are only available on the day.
Also, the thing is with Messina, all of their ice cream tasted very raw, you can taste the ingredients and while it's a plus for me, some people might find their versions of "OG" flavors (like the choc mint and cookies n cream) a disappointment, so just make sure to "give them a try" before making a choice. At the end of the day, the reason there are so many choices is because everyone has different preferences.
Lastly, it would be nice to have more vegan options, as they only have sorbets and coconut based, so if you dont like coconut and sorbets, unfortunately that's all they got.

Price: Reasonable price.

YUM: amongst the ones ive tried, almond coconut, bourbon brekkie (specials), espresso, macadamia crunch, pistachio praline, coffee, choc mint
NAH: none

photo: bourbon brekkie, choc mint

xx、 joelle
I usually go to the Windsor store but the gelato is the same!

Love ordering the chocolate fondue and passionfruit sorbet flavours. It's a perfect combination.
Much more seating than the one on Chapel Street but I found the staff to be nicer there.
Highly recommend!

With a large menu (40 flavours) and continual innovation, Gelato Messina offers an ever-changing gelato experience.

Gelato Messina makes great gelato, with a huge variety of traditional-style gelato on its regular menu, including both dairy and non-dairy options. There are also the weekly specials – wacky over-the-top indulgences, often with equally wacky names.

The creative team does an amazing job, nonetheless some concoctions don’t work quite so well as others. Or are just plain weird (case in point: The Chicken Cave on Tapleys Hill Road – tasting of fried chips). To avoid disappointment, we recommend sampling before ordering.

Try to avoid peak times (Friday and Saturday nights) so you can select your gelato in a more relaxed atmosphere. There are a few tables and seats inside, if you are lucky.
Angel Khong
Creamy sweet delicious gelato with a lot of fun (and classic) flavours to choose from. My favourites are ones with cake/cookie pieces in them. Love the cozy joint as well, it’s quite small but there seems to always be seats available.
Steph
Bestest of the best!!! This store in particular is my favourite as there is always enough staff to cover the customers so I never find myself waiting in line for more than a few minutes unlike the other stores where I usually have to queue on Friday and Saturday nights.
Hangry Jules
$4.8 per scoop but it's worth it for the 🍪! Pretty small shop compared to the other Gelato Messina but its got everything I loved😁

Also their app didnt work when we went today 😲

Can never resist getting myself some ice cream every time I pass Gelato Messina. It’s honestly one of the best, if not THE best, gelato in Melbourne!

My favourites are the tiramisu and the pistachio praline flavour, but honestly give me any flavour and I will devour it! Don’t forget to check out their specials menu too - they have some very creative flavour combinations!!
Nicole
I love gelato and Gelato Messina has to be my favourite gelato shop.
I love the variety of flavours on offer. As well as the weekly specials, which always keep things interesting.
Vivian
Hands down one of the best gelato stores in Melbourne ! Everything taste like what the description says it is. Texture is creamy and silky . Just truly amazing
Helen
A nice range of ice cream and sorbet. Looked lovely and I wanted the lot but after a big meal settled for gelato - tried lemon, passion fruit , raspberry and blood orange flavours and I could taste the bits of fresh fruit or peel. It looks like they make it on the premises rather than just receiving big tubs delivered from a factory elsewhere which would explain their popularity along with a great central location and hot weather.

Food: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Nothing to say except that if you haven't been here yet, get yourself here. The quality of the flavours and scoops speak for themselves.

Service: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Servers were very helpful with recommendations. You are also able to request to taste the flavours before buying.

Price: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
We would happily pay any price for good quality icecream. This was GREAT quality icecream.

Tried two of the speicals: pistachio praline and milkshake flavoured gelato, and they were simply devine👌 tiramisu is great as usual. That's right, I got three scoops.
Followthefoodmelbourne
Best gelato/ice cream ever! I opted for a scoop of strawberries & cream, as well as a scoop of one of their specials - ‘drop it like it’s white choc’. Both were to die for.

Gelato Messina is an insanely popular gelato store with 3 stores around Melbourne. They serve at least 40 different flavours so you'll be sure to find something you like. I've been to the Richmond store twice and each time it's always a struggle to be served since there's so much people at the counter. But it's even worse trying to find a seat since they're always taken, which resulted in me eating it on the way home.
Melbourne To Mouth
Can’t live without their salted caramel white choc gelato. I think Deliveroo might think I have a substance abuse problem relating to it based on the number of times I’ve had tubs delivered to our apartment. Honestly the best gelato in the world, how they make the most epic flavors I’ll never know. I don’t need to. I just need to eat.
DamoForce Food
Always never short on options and choices. Try and go outside of the busy period so you don't need to rush. Their rotating specials are always tasty
Hangry Horace
Love the ice cream flavours here. I tried one of the specials which was a salted malt gelato and it was divine. Staff were friendly and attentive.

She was a little nervous.
It had been a while since she'd done something so lasciviously spontaneous. Had she not been urged on by the indomitable Amex Offers, she may not have gone out of her way to make it happen.
Her excitement grew as she got closer to the store. It was her first time setting foot in this establishment. She was a little hesitant at first, & unsure if it would live up to expectation. Tingles of delight ran down her spine, as she walked through the doors.
Alice's beaming smile from behind the counter would comfort anyone; like a mother hen looking out for all her chicks.
The seemingly endless rows & deep tubs were filled with numerous flavours; from the classic to the unconventional.
She was reassured & not reprimanded for wantonly asking to try a variety of the flavours.
Alice patiently answered her every query, in between serving other gelati connoisseurs.
Alice's hospitality was undeniable, & made the whole encounter for her an adventure!
It wasn't the cheapest of affairs, nor did it top her current favourite gelato, but she'd stop in whenever she was in the area, simply to experience the service.

A+

Can’t go wrong with Messina.

The Richmond branch seems a lot less busier than the one in Fitzroy. We came in on a late Wednesday night. I will say that it’d be nice if there was a tad more lighting, it was super dark.

This time I ordered the Mango sorbet and Coconut & Lychee gelato. Absolutely delicious flavour pairing! I love how the flavours here are so vibrant and not at all artificial.
Sam
I love this place. I was telling my boyfriend how good it was and he said I was exaggerating, so I took him to understand what I was talking about. The next night he was yelling and running out the door to make it to Messina before they closed. SO GOOD.
Brekkycakes
Considering how hot it has been lately, there was no better way to indulge than to get some gelato at the famed Messina.

I love the selection that Messina provides and the fact that they have special flavours on rotation weekly on top of that! As I had already had dessert for the day, I decided to hold back and opted for two scoops($6.8) of salted mango and coconut, and number two which was a peanut butter gelato with bits of brownies and dulce de leche jam. The gelato here is always on point(smooth and flavoursome) and I was happy to find that it was no different on this occasion. The salted mango is so amazing as the sweet and saltiness is well balanced and the mango flavours come through strongly. I like waffle cones but find that they always end up dripping on me so I always ask for my gelato in a cup and a cone separately and the great folks at Messina are always more than happy to at no extra charge!

Service here is friendly and efficient and they are happy to let you try out their flavours beforehand - which is great as otherwise I wouldn't be able to make a choice! I did find that your ice cream portions can vary depending on who serves you but its generally standardised. Messina also takes card now! So it is a lot easier to pay now :)

A while ago, I've written the review for Gelato Messina branch located in Windsor.
Again, who can say no to ice cream in any weather? I know, right....
We had dinner around Bridge Road, Richmond area with a group of friends.
One of our friends has his own ritual, he has to finish up his day with ice cream no matter how full he is, LOL!!!!

Anyway, we've decided to go to Gelato Messina and the closest one is Swan Street, Richmond.
The ice cream shop has consistent interior design and the customer service was really good.
The customer staffs patiently served every single customer with smile though it was busy.
We went there and checked on their special ice cream on that day "PassionFruit Cheesecake".
The taste was absolutely fantastic;
It had rich taste, creamy, fresh and not too sweet.
You could literaly taste the cheesecake inside the ice cream in addition to the fresh passionfruit.

It's a WOW!!! Loved it.
Never disappointed to go to this ice cream shop :)

Service: 5
Taste: 5
Price: 3.0
Speed: 4.5

Yay: Very consistent taste, great customer service, passionfruit was absolutely fresh and brilliant
Nay: N/A

Location: 164 Swan Street, Richmond, Melbourne
Phone: 03 9428 6288
Website: gelatomessina.com

Yummmy gelato! The cheesecake was soooo gooood! Loved their outdoor seating since we had our dog with us. Nice place to people watch as well since this street is quite busy. Parking was not too bad.

LIT!: we had 3 flavours including the macadamia, lychee and pandas. All flavours were sensational but still hasn't bet my apple pie flavour

NOT SO LIT: n/a. love their icecream- you just can't go wrong here

Lovely gelato cakes. Presentation and ordering (phone) was easy and not as stressful as I thought it might be. They will be fine for car trips up to 45 minutes since they are blast frozen. They even come with instructions for how to eat them which is helpful when you are at a restaurant.

Ordered the Bombe Alaska and the Tronchetto log. Both were lovely. Bombe was less sweet and more refreshing - the dark (not too dark!) chocolate gelato, tart raspberry sorbet and sweet meringue all complimented each other. The Tronchetto was mostly dulce de leche gelato with a small bar of choc chip, surrounded by chocolate cake and a white chocolate shell. Sweet but again very nice and creamy.
Steven Gu
Best ice cream in the town. Definitely worthwhile for a try. Although a bit small space but takeaway is ideal option or you can sit in to taste the heaven flavour
Amy
I never can decide which flavours to choose! Unfortunately my choices weren't fantastic this time.... had the flavour of the week - The Voicemail (salted caramel gelato with baked cheesecake, honey roasted nuts and hazelnut fudge) and Italian nougat. Both were just jam-packed with inclusions, so much so that I could hardly taste the gelato. The ratio of inclusions to gelato is just not right. Some people might prefer it like this but I would personally like to see the gelato itself shine.
Justin
More spacious than the Windsor store and just as busy! My favourite is the pandan coconut, and we usually try something from the specials board. Their gelato also travels really well so definitely worth getting some to take home.
MVP
Had a tiramisu one of them here and it was lit. It rained that night so there were way to many people inside but that's not really your fault, but more Mother Nature.

A famously good treat that reverts any adult back to their childish self. Gelato Messina puts up some pretty fun and interesting choices, but their classics are the real winners for me. With Pistachio, passion fruit and lemon being classics, these are faultless crowd pleasers for both children and adults. Often see a line around here, and there's no question why. Service is pretty quick moving. I would suggest having a try of other flavours if you're uncertain. Some are a bit of a hit and miss.
Becky
Best ice cream!! I have loved this gelato from the moment it opened its doors. My favourite flavour is the white chocolate and salted caramel!

When a place can draw you in for icecream during Winter you know they have something going on. Staff were super friendly and probably would have let us try every flavor before making the all important decision. Went with this weeks Game of Cones creation, the Khalessi, based on a mango gelato with a touch of yogurt and dragonfruit puree, win! This sat atop a lovely sticky date number that was just as good, well played Messina.

The gelato here is very rich which makes it so popular. It is also high-proportion. I also like the sorbet here with sour tasty, very suitable for dessert after dinner.

There are just so many flavours to choose from that it's too hard! Gelato is delicious and smooth and they open late. Next time will try their ice cream cake!

4.50 for a scoop! Great value. The milk chocolate with peanut choc fudge was the best. Loved the tiramisu and the lemon sorbet too!! Staff were friendly and very helpful.

Always good and open relatively late - and they take card now which is a bonus! It would be great if they could make clearer which flavours have dairy/nuts etc. as not everyone has the app.

This joint gets the same sparking review as do all other Messinas. As the Gelato Kingpin this place is always a standout spot for smooth, creamy and delicious gelato. The rotating specials menu is always filled with interesting creations that keep people coming back to see if old favourites have returned or to be delighted and intrigued by odd-pairings that will leave you gobsmacked. Do not be put off by the crowd - they know what they're on to. AMAZING.

Well what can I say that's new or different from the majority of the other reviews? Messina is the gelato lord in Australia. Attracting a cult following and a devoted fan base with their decadent and quirky flavours, and also their gorgeous looking and tasting gelato cakes, Messina can do no wrong. Stupidly indulgent mismatched of rotating flavours such as the most recent peanut butter gelato, fried Brioche and strawberry jam (Elvis the Fat Years) keeps me hooked and coming back to discover what's new. Texture-wise, the gelati are creamy and smooth but could in my humble opinion, be creamier. Sometimes I do feel that the barrage of add-ins weigh the gelato down, making it quite heavy and dense. The flavours are always spot-on, and the service is friendly and well organised. With some customers getting all hot and bothered st the sight of gelati and consequently losing the ability to queue up in an orderly manner, the staffs handle the crowd surprisingly well. Messina is most definitely a reliable gelati runner for gelati lovers, and thanks to the late closing times, a cheeky option for a late night snack.

A great range of gelato to choose from! You can never get bored when going there. Always tasty though on occasions the staff can be a little lacking.

nice gelato with quite unique flavour combinations. Only came here once and had something with rhubarb in it if im not mistaken and found that quite nice. Tried my friend's salted caramel flavour which was also very nice. Will be back to try other flavours.

Can't fault it. Unique and huge range of flavours, all taste incredible (out of the few I've tried) and comfy vibes inside with friendly service. Can't wait to come back!

This place hands down has probably the best ice cream by far. I recommend getting the peanut butter and pistachios flavour. Note it does get very packed so get ready to wait. Also, they didn't accept card when I went except it's through an app of some sort.

Went here tonight after dinner with my sister. I have to say, while the actual store is bigger than the Windsor Outlet, I don't like it as much. It's too dark inside and it had a really weird unpleasant smell happening inside. The staff were friendly, Although there were only 2 people working and it was not easy to sample flavours because there were a lot of people there. The ice cream was as tasty as ever though. I love the new eftpos facilities available across Messina stores.

Best ice cream in Melbourne!!!!! The opening hours are great and the variety is astounding. Never ever been disappointed by this place!! Great vibes, friendly staff and always good music!

Quite frustrating that you can't pay on card and there isn't a lot of seating but I still give this place 5 stars because it's worth it!

Always such a great selection of ice-creams. Staff let you try the flavours and give you the heads up if the ice-cream is a bit of an obscure one and get you to taste first so you're not disappointed which is really appreciated.

The only downside like many is that they don't take eftpos, and I really can't be assed downloading an app just to pay for icecream I'll get at best once a month.

I'm not a huge fan of ice cream usually but this was nice! I got the salted mango and coconut flavour. Came as a group and everyone else really enjoyed their ice creams as well.

I went here at roughly 9pm only to be greeted by sub-par wait staff and a dark room in which I could barely distinguish the plethora of devious icecream. Devious as my girlfriend who is allergic to hazelnuts ordered a chocolate fondant and asked if hazelnuts were present only to be greeted with a forceful "no". After buying the icecream and leaving the premises her allergy began to flare up and she had trouble breathing. Thanks a lot Messina!

(I also dropped the icecream off my cone as the wait staff did not sufficiently push the icecream in!)

Best icecream around. I've been to all 3 in Melbourne and it's consistent across the board. Always amazing and the specials board is always exciting for me. Apple pie will forever be my "go to" if I can't decide.

Gelato Messina is rightly a star of the gelato world, with continual innovation redefining the boundaries of what is possible with frozen treats. With 40 flavours on the menu, ranging from the traditional – vanilla, chocolate, lemon – to the more unusual – such as salted coconut with mango salsa – there is something for everyone.

The gelato here is to die for! Would recommend to anyone and the position of this particular Messina makes it the perfect place to stop into after a nice dinner along Swan Street. Only downside is that they didn't take EFTPOS when I was in there last which was a little inconvenient.

I've been to the Collingwood Gelato Messina a couple of times and I couldn't see what all the hype was about. It was ok but nothing special. We were across the road from the Richmond Gelato Messina so I thought I'd give this one a try. I got the coconut and pandan flavour and the white chocolate with salty caramel. I enjoyed these flavours more then the one in Collingwood but I still don't see why there's such a big hype. Maybe it's because ice cream isn't my favourite thing except the cookies and cream connoisseur I can get from the supermarket.

Tasty gelato that is nearly as good as the Italian stuff. Because it was a warm day it was pretty busy but staff were more than willing to let you try before you buy. Prices a bit more than the usual but who cares when it's as tasty as this. The coconut and almond was so tasty but the fig and Marsala was ok, not enough fig flavour for me. Cash only which confuses me in this day and age.

What beats having the best gelato in town? Having the best gelato in town in bed. To accompany a lazy night in we popped out for a takeaway tub of 0.5L from a nearby Gelato Messina. The packaging (in a foam box, followed by a cardboard holder) seems adequate for keeping the gelato icy cold and it got home frosty enough. I did a quick blast in the freezer for a little bit which probably helped a little.
